✨✧ Brian Auger & The TrinityDefinitely What (with bonus track) ... CD
Disconforme (Spain), 1969. Used ... Out Of Stock
Brian Auger's first album away from singer Julie Driscoll – and a landmark batch of funky organ work that made big waves in both the rock and jazz worlds at the time! Auger's really stretching out here – getting past the simple R&B of his roots, and going into a bubbling funky style that's clearly touched by chromatic inspirations from Wes Montgomery and Jimmy Smith – both of whom are referenced by some of the song structures on the set. The album's filled with killer organ-based instrumentals – some lean and stripped down, others full and rich – and all of them coming across with a richly soulful sound that you'd hardly expect from a member of the British rock scene! Titles include "Day In The Life", "Red Beans & Rice", "Definitely What!", and his classic "Bumpin' On Sunset". Great stuff, and the kind of Brian Auger material that will convince you of his talents! Includes the bonus track : "What You Gonna Do?". CD

✨✧ BarrabasForbidden ... CD
RCA/Disconforme (Spain), 1984. Used ... Out Of Stock
Pretty cheesy stuff from Barrabas – not that they weren't always cheesy to begin with, but this one's going over the top! The record is in a tinny 80s dance mode – still with the jungle/tropical themes of earlier records, but also with a kind of Miami Vice-ish style on the guitars and keyboards. We suppose it represents sort of a sophistication for the ensemble – but we'd make this the last one to buy of all their records. Titles include "Sex Surprise Big Surprise", "Lovers In The Rain", "Stop The Horse", "Inside Of Me", and "Hollywood Ten O'Clock At Night" – and those titles should say it all! CD

✨✧ CentipedeSeptober Energy ... CD
Disconforme (Spain), 1971. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A landmark session that gathered together just about every hip British jazz and jazz/rock musician of the time – and brought them together into one super-cool orchestra of sound! Robert Fripp produced the record, and Keith Tippett is the overall music director – but the album's got a feel that's much more in the avant side of the UK jazz spectrum – particularly the trippier side of the Deram/Decca label of the late 60s – like work by Mike Westbrook or Mike Gibbs! The lineup is huge – with Elton Dean and Dudu Pukwana on alto sax, Alan Skidmore and Gary Windo on tenor, Ian Carr and Mongesi Fesa on trumpets, Mark Charig on cornet, Nick Evans and Paul Rutherford on trombone, Keith Tippett on piano, Brian Godding on guitar, Robert Wyatt and John Marshall on drums, and Maggie Nicholls, Julie Tippett, Mike Patto, and Zoot Money on vocals – plus lots of strings as well! ✨✧ Keith TippettYou Are Here I Am There ... CD
Disconforme (Spain), 1970. Used ... Out Of Stock
An early stunner from keyboardist Keith Tippett – served up with a punch and power that's missing from a lot of his later work! The music's a perfect blend of free-thinking jazz and some of the more progressive rock ideas of the time – not exactly jazz rock, not exactly avant jazz – but a really unique blend that flourished briefly in the UK for a handful years, under the guidance of Tippett and some of his key contemporaries! Deeper ideas are given a great sense of shape on the set – as Keith plays both acoustic and electric piano – in a cool combo that also includes Elton Dean on alto, Nick Evans on trombone, Mark Charig on cornet, and Alan Jackson on drums. The tracks have a nice little groove at the best moments – not really funky, but not that far off too – almost an echo of some of the MPS or other European styles. Titles include "This Evening Was Like Last Year", "I Wish There Was A Nowhere", "Violence", "Three Minutes From An Afternoon In July", and "Stately Dance For Miss Primm". CD
