Conjunto QuisqueyaConjunto Quisqueya ... CD
Discomoda (Venezuela), 1993. New Copy ... $7.99 9.99
A set recorded 20 years into the history of this great Venezuelan group – but one that still shows them very much at the top of their game – working in a style that mixes salsa with more contemporary rhythms from their nearby scenes – often moving at a clip that's even faster than some of the Colombian cumbia records of the period! The group sport a twin team of reed players – saxophonists Berto Tavero and Dwight Arroyo, both of whom stick tight next to each other as they dip and turn in the grooves – and vocals are from Aneudi Diaz, Javish Victoria, and pianist Chucky Acosta, who also handles arrangements. Titles include "Volvere", "Con El Palito En La Mano", "Son De La Loma", "El Que No Llora No Ama", "Hasta Aqui Te Trajo El Rio", "La Llorona Loca", and "Nuestro Amor Se Esta Muriendo". CD

Havana SwingAqui Esta La Rumba ... CD
Discomoda, 1996. New Copy ... $7.99 9.99
A Havana Swing, but by a Venezuelan group of the 90s – one who do a great job of bringing in plenty of warmer salsa modes to the set! The music does a great job of combining traditional percussion with some jazzier touches on alto and tenor sax – often used in tandem with these soaring passages that dip and turn nicely next to the keyboards – which are handled by Julio Font, who also does arrangements and directs the group! Victor Romero is the leader, and delivers well-crafted vocals throughout – on titles that include "Termometro De Amor", "Soy Guajiro", "Que Manera De Quererte", "Se Fue", "El Breve Espacio", and a cool Latin remake of "Baby I Love Your Way". Cheche Mendoza Y Su ConjuntoSiempre En Orbita – Y A Bailar Con Los Satelites (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Discomoda, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
A great album from Cheche Mendoza and his Los Satelites combo – a group who first formed in the 60s, but who were really hitting their stride by the time of this record! The combo hail from Venezuela, and have a vibe that's nicely different than some of the New York and Puerto Rican groups of the time – maybe a slight touch of Colombia in the rhythms, although the piano and trumpet lines are definitely in an early salsa mode – served up in a small group style that's definitely inherited from the Joe Cuba Sextet, but taken in a nice new direction. Vocals are by Mauricio Conde and Cheche himself – and the group features piano from Nano Ladera, trombone from Cesar Monges, and trumpet from Cesar Fuentes. Titles include "Hochum", "Sufre Y Goza", "Pensando En Ti", "Este Tipo No Este En Na", "Doce Cascabeles", "Satelite Jala Jala", "El Tostao", and "El Triunfo". LP, Vinyl record album

Nelson Y Sus EstrellasLa Salsa Y El Swing (180 gram white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Discomoda, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
A really wonderful record from this cool combo from Venezuela – young, tight, and full of energy throughout on this late 60s set – almost as if they were taking cues from the New York scene, but also serving up some of their own groove too! There's still some older pachanga elements in the mix, but those are blended with more of the sharper groove of the mod 60s combo years – in a lineup that mixes trombone with violin, flute, and some mighty nice piano from leader Nelson Gonzalez! Titles include the smoking "Descarga Boogaloo" – plus "Guaguanco En Mi", "Pachanga Juap", "Nelson Swing", "Tongolelel", "Danzon De Caracas", "La Ra La La", and "Ki Ki Ri Ki". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ray Perez Y Los DementesEl Milagro ... CD
Discomoda, 2000. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Ray Perez works here with a number of different singers – including Domingo Claro, Carlin Rodriguez, and Teo Hernandez – yet weaves their vocals into a nicely unified set that features plenty of piano and keyboards from Perez next to some especially nice percussion! The group has a nice lean sound – not really the full horn section for most salsa albums of this vintage, which really lets the full expressive quality of the singers come to the forefront – almost making for a more personal sort of session, while still keeping up a salsa-styled groove. Titles include "Canta Gaitero", "El Milagro", "Catalina", "Laura P", "Mexico 7", "Aqui Estoy De Nuevo", and "Convergencia". CD

Discomoda/Universal (Colombia), Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Hard grooving salsa tracks, with a bit of Latin Soul thrown in for good measure! The album includes the sublime "part 2" version of "Trumpetman", one of Ray's best groovers from the late 60s, and an excellent party Latin tune – plus the tracks "Wakamba", "Ba Ma La La", "Wichita Lineman", "Rumbero Mayor", "Ay! Conchita", and "Baba Coroco". CD

✨✧ Ray Perez Y Los DementesPura Salsa ... CD
Discomoda, 1970s/1980s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A collection of killer cuts from Ray Perez and Los Dementes – a rock-solid salsa group, but one who never got as much exposure up on our scene – maybe in part because of their Venezuelan origin! Yet that lack of exposure hardly dims the light in these tracks at all – as the CD is overflowing with cookers that never let up – the kind of well-crafted small combo rhythms that are completely on fire in terms of percussion, bass, and piano – often rocketing away at top speed while the horns and vocals jump into the fray. Ray's records have always been tough to get, which makes this 16 track set such a great introduction to his work – with titles that include "Mi Salsa Llego", "El Guaguanco Y La Salsa", "Escargando", "La Cenicienta", "Mi Mujer No Esta En El Guiro", "Vete De Mi Vida", "Los Dementes", "A Comer Llaman", "Catalina", and "Carnaval De Cueros".
