Digital UndergroundThis Is An EP Release ... LP
Tommy Boy, 1990. New Copy (reissue)... $15.99 16.98
Maybe just an EP, but a short set that's every bit as important to the Digital Underground catalog as their full length albums – as the whole thing is overflowing with the kind of funky tracks that made these guys a standout right from the start! The set's only got six tracks, but that maybe makes it even tighter and more unified than you might expect – as the whole thing's got that classic bass-heavy funk approach that made Digital Underground such a key link between hip hop and soul, in both their 90s present and the past. Tracks include "Same Song", "Tie The Knot", "The Way We Swing (remix)", "Nuttin Nis Funky", "Packet Man (Worth A Packet remix)", and "Arguin On The Funk". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Digital UndergroundSex Packets (180 gram blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Tommy Boy, 1990. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic debut from Digital Underground – an early 90s classic that opened the door for a whole new audience for hip hop at the time! The set effortlessly mixes old school funk with contemporary hip hop modes – and also maybe brings back in a bit of the party sort of vibe of early hip hop from New York – but with a definitely west coast spin here, given the heavy use of bass! The record opened the door for a whole new level of appreciation of older styles of soul and funk – while also giving both the group and hip hop in general a new platform from which to speak – one that was maybe seen by some as slightly commercial at the time, but which has gone on to be an undeniable part of the hip hop legacy! Titles include the hits "Doowutchyalike" and "Humpty Dance" – plus "Freaks of the Industry", "The Way We Swing", "Sex Packets", "Street Scene", "Packet Man", "Underwater Rimes (rmx)", "The New Jazz", "Rhymin On The Funk", "The Danger Zone", and "Packet Reprise". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition on clear blue vinyl – 2LPs, for better sound than the original!)

German OakDown In The Bunker (with download & bonus tracks) ... LP
Bunker/Now Again, 1972. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $24.99 27.98
One of the darkest albums of the Krautrock scene in the 70s – an album that was actually recorded in a WWII-era bunker – where the duo were free to open up their instruments, jam for a very long time, and play with the sorts of effects and techniques you might know from bigger groups of the period! Yet there's a brooding quality here that's different than Can, Faust, or other groups – maybe because German Oak were a duo without a very clear path forward, and also because recording an album in an underground concrete bunker was bound to produced some weird vibes on the session! One of the group members recalls in the notes that in the space, he couldn't help thinking of the trauma of WWII – and you can definitely hear that in the music, and see it in the look of the package – which carries tunes that include "Screaming Skeletons", "Missile Song", "Belle's Song", and "Nothing". This fantastic package offers up some great notes from the group – in both German and English – and also adds in rare material too – the tracks "Bear Song", "Happy Stripes On Cats", "Ghost Guitar", and "Bear Song (alt version)". ✨✧ Wells FargoWatch Out (with bonus download) ... LP
Now Again, Late 70s. New Copy ... $19.99 22.98
Funky-strutting genius from Wells Fargo – one of the coolest, heaviest acts to come out of the Zimbabwe scene of the 70s – a moment when hard rock and soulful basslines came together brilliantly, to power the raw edge of a handful of groups like this! The music is maybe more late 60s than you'd guess from the date – that heady Zamrock return to the rawer corners of the American underground, at a time when so many of the bigger groups overseas were hitting AOR status – yet an approach that also mixes in plenty of lessons learned from early 70s funk and soul, especially in the massive basslines at the core of the tunes. This is the first time the group's music has ever been reissued outside of Zimbabwe – and the package brings together 11 of their rare singles – with titles that include "Bump Bump Babe", "Bwanawe", "Carrying On", "Too Long Away", "Shades Of Wells Fargo", "Love Is The In Thing", "Watch Out", and "Coming Home". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes download – for all the music on the album, and a digital file for a complete 72 page book – with loads of notes on the band, and a huge amount of vintage images too!)

VariousCold Waves Of Color Vol 6 ... LP
Color Tapes/Lion, Early 80s. New Copy ... $18.99
Special sounds from the deep work of underground electronic music that lurked way down below the British charts of the early 80s – music by a host of different groups who still hold strong to the early, darker post-punk styles of Sheffield and Manchester – mostly using analogue electronics at a time when the digital world was really cleaning things up! These cuts are fantastic – every bit as mindblowing as all the previous volumes in this game-changing series – and as with those releases, most of the cuts here were only issued as cassettes or singles back in the day – if they saw any circulation at all! Titles include "After Dusk" by Berserk In A Hayfield, "Cabaret Futurama" by Neutron Scientists, "Electro Switch" by Silicon Valley, "Dimension 2" by Modern Art, "Radioactive" by Disintegrators, and "Controlled Experiment" by Echophase. LP, Vinyl record album

VariousDaisy Age ... CD
Ace (UK), Early 90s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A fantastic collection of work from a real golden age in hip hop – a period that you'll probably guess from the image of the Native Tongues posse on the front – served up here in a compilation that brings together classics from De La Soul, The Jungle Brothers, Monie Love, and many others! The set list is superb – and while most of the tracks are well-remembered gems, and not the kind of rare cuts we usually hear from Ace Records – taken together, they're a tremendous reminder of a time when hip hop really came alive – bursting with wit, wisdom, and a whole new sense of musical imagination! As usual with Ace, the liner notes and other details are great – making this way more than just a slap-dash mix of hits – and titles include "You're Not Coming Home (Mase's funkay recall mix)" by Groove Garden, "Age Ain't Nothin But A #" by Chi Ali, "Bonita Applebum" by Tribe Called Quest, "Sunshine Men" by Freestyle Fellowship, "Peachfuzz" by KMD, "K Sera Sera" by Justin Warfield, "It's A Shame" by Monie Love, "Doin Our Own Dang" by Jungle Brothers, "OPP" by Naughty By Nature, "Doowutchyalike" by Digital Underground, "A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays" by De La Soul, "The Choice Is Yours" by Black Sheep, "All For One" by Brand Nubian, "My Definition Of A Boombastic Jazz Style" by Dream Warriors, "Mama Gave Birth To The Soul Children" by Queen Latifah with De La Soul, "Where I'm From" by Digable Planets, and "We Run Things (It's Like Dat)" by Da Bush Babees. Now Again, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2LP ... $21.99 24.98
Mellow soul heaven – and one of the greatest compilations of this style we've ever heard! This is exactly the kind of laidback, tripped-out soul we totally love – a host of rare ballads and love songs pulled from the 45 underground of the late 60s and early 70s – sometimes by groups who are better known for funky tracks, other times by overlooked harmony groups and solo singers who rival the greatness of east coast artists like The Moments or Whatnauts! VariousWake Up You Vol 1 – The Rise & Fall Of Nigerian Rock Music 1972 to 1977 (with download) ... LP
Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Just Sold Out!
The Nigerian scene might be best-remembered as a hotbed of Afro Funk in the 70s – but during the same key stretch, the nation also gave rise to a heady rock underground, too – one that often mix psychedelic inspirations with some of the soul and funk that were coming from the bigger names on their scene at the time! In other words, there's plenty of guitars here – but also plenty of groove – basslines that really get the tunes going, and a mix of funky drums and rootsy percussion that make the music way more than just standard rock of the time – and even a lot groovier than some of the Zamrock or South African sounds that got a bit more exposure. The package is as great as the sound within – a big book that's filled with detailed notes on the music, the scene, and the tumultuous Nigerian politics of the period – plus lots of photos and images as well! The collection features 18 tracks in all – titles that include "Mother" by Waves, "Never Never Let Me Down" by Formulars Dance Band, "Keep On Moving" by The Hygrades, "Everybody Likes Something Good" by Ify Jerry Krusade, "Onye Ije" by The Strangers, "Stone The Flower" by The Hykers, "Never Too Late" by The Apostles, "Tell Me" by PRO, "Float" by Tirogo, "I Can't Be Satisfied" by Founders 15, and "Ballad Of A Sad Young Woman" by Wrinkar Experience.
