Dexter StoryBahir ... LP
Soundway (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99
The world of Dexter Story just keeps getting bigger and bigger – not just because he's a richly collaborative player, but also because he's got this musical style that really opens up to so many different elements – but without ever sounding like he's trying to crash them together in any sort of inorganic way! Instead, Dexter draws evenly from spiritual jazz, Ethiopian rhythms, underground soul, and some of the best strands of 21st Century grooves – opening up the door for his own wonderful lead lyrics, while creating and exploring a planet of his own. Guests on the record include Carlos Nino on percussion, Te'Amir Sweeney on drums, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on strings, and Randal Fischer on tenor – and the set features guest vocals from Haile Supreme, Marie Daulne, Endeguena Mulu, Sudan Archives, Jimetta Rose, and Kibrom Birhane – although Dexter gets plenty of time in the lead too. Titles include "Mamdooh", "Buna Be Chow", "Gold", "Techawit", "Shuruba Song", "Bahir", "Abebaye", and "Jijiga Jijiya". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dexter StorySeasons ... CD
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 2012. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful project from the contemporary underground scene in LA – a record that shares lots of energy and musicians with recordings by Build An Ark and Life Force Trio! Dexter Story's the main force behind the record, but the set's a strongly collaborative effort – and features keyboards from Mark De Clive-Lowe, flute from Derf Reklaw, strings from Mighel Atwood-Ferguson, vocals from Dwight Trible, and key studio work from Carlos Nino! Story's vocals and overall conception are wonderful – soaring and soulful, with some slight cosmic touches that give the record a bit more crackle than related projects – a sound that's still steeped in spiritual jazz elements, yet which also really opens up as the set rolls on. There's a wonderful sense of variety to the tracks – due to the shifting lineup – but the overall feel is still very cohesive, and an amazing demonstration of Story's bold musical vision. Titles include "Seasons", "Into The Hour", "Love Force Trio (part 1)", "Underway", "Water Bearer", "Paddle Boat", "Bloop Drip", "Gyre Song", "As Is", "God Sun", and "Suijin". CD

Joanna GardnerJoanna Gardner ... CD
Expansion (UK), 1985. New Copy ... $8.99
A rare lost modern soul gem, which we too rarely come across! Recorded in 1985 for the Philly World label as Gardner's debut LP, the story as we understand it is that this record never really hit the shelves – for some reason it was pulled at the last minute by the label. We can't figure out why, as the set's got very nice 80s Philly production and arrangements courtesy Dexter Wansel, Bobby Eli and Nick Martinelli – with a smooth 80s groove soul sound that would have been a big hit then, and is even more sought after now. The album includes Joanna's great cut "Pick Up The Pieces", an excellent stepper's cut, plus "We Can Make It", "Special Feelings", "Watching You", "Spooky" and "I Could Never Love Another Like You". VariousClassic Savoy Be-Bop Sessions 1945 to 1949 (10CD set) ... CD
Savoy/Mosaic, Late 40s. New Copy 10CD ... $168.99 169.00
The roots of modern jazz never sounded this great before – and this is the first time ever that all the early bop recordings by Savoy have been properly brought together in one place! Savoy was one of the most important labels to record the early bop pioneers – and had a dedication to the music that begin in 1945, and moved well into the 50s – as the label captured some of the brightest young stars who'd go onto shape a generation! Almost all of this material was originally issued just as 78rpm singles – then later scattered and repackaged in a confusing way – although many tracks here also never made it into the LP or CD generation, either. The folks at Mosaic have worked incredible magic to correct that error – and have pulled together a stunning 10CD package that finally presents this amazing legacy of music in its proper form – complete with notes and session details that were never given in later years, too. There's way too much here to list in this space – but the set features dates recorded under the name of Dexter Gordon, Fats Navarro, Stan Getz, JJ Johnson, Sonny Stitt & Kenny Dorham's Bebop Boys, Allen Eager, Kai Winding, Ray Brown, Eddie Davis, Serge Chaloff, Kenny Hagood, Leo Parker, Tadd Dameron, Teddy Reig, Brew Moore, Milt Jackson, Kenny Clarke, and Gil Fuller – all with groups that are filled with equally hip and important musicians too. We love Mosaic all the time – but with a collection of 78rpm material, they really knock it out of the park – and do us, and the jazz history books, a mighty big favor! CD

✨✧ Led ZeppelinLed Zeppelin ... LP
Atlantic, 1969. Very Good ... $24.99
One of the most monumental debuts in rock history – a record that hit the world like a led zeppelin, and left an impression for years to come! Led Zeppelin pretty much took over rock right from the beginning – which isn't too surprising, given that Jimmy Page had an in-demand guitar heavy for years already – but the power of this debut is still astonishing after all these years – a blistering blend of bluesy roots, psych fuzz, and razor-sharp instrumental dexterity! The whole thing's a gem – and titles include "Good Times Bad Times", "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" "You Shook Me", "Dazed And Confused", "Your Time Is Gonna Come", "Black Mountain Side", and "I Can't Quit You Baby". Ben WebsterFirst Concert In Denmark ... CD
Storyville (Denmark), 1965. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
The Danish scene provided tenor legend Ben Webster a great home in later years – around the same time that Copenhagen was an important spot for Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, and other American players too! This set marks Ben's first performance on that scene – and is well-captured by Danish Radio, who recorded the whole thing in Copenhagen – with Webster backed by the same trio who also accompanied both Dex and Griff on other records – Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Alex Riel on drums. The tracks are maybe a bit shorter than some of Gordon's longform workouts from 60s Copenhagen – but still have Ben blowing with more space than he'd had in years in the studio – working that wonderfully raspy tone through versions of "Blues In B Flat", "In A Mellotone", "Cotton Tail", "Over The Rainbow", and "Pennies From Heaven" – as well as an interesting rehearsal at the start. ✨✧ Ghostface Killah & BadbadnotgoodSour Soul ... LP
Lex, 2015. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Cinematic hip hop from the steadily productive, furiously on point rhyme slinger Ghostface Killah – working here with the excellent Toronto jazz funk ensemble Badbadnotgood – and as much as we dug Ghostface's funk band backed efforts of the previous couple years, Sour Soul might be best of 'em! None of the bands that Ghostface his rhymed out front have been anything less than of the finest caliber, but the looser narrative style of Sour Soul is a refreshing change of pace – the concept album aspect has more to do with the feel than it does an attempt to tell a complete story – leaving room for Ghost to do his inimitable thing from track-to-track without the pressure of weaving an album length tale. Badbadnotgood's raw, dexterous vibe is a fine foil – with lots of raw percussion, psych soul guitars and keys. Includes "Mono", "Soour Soul", "Stark's Reality", "Tone's Rap", "Mind Playin' Tricks", "Ray Gun" feat Doom, "Nuggets Of Wisdom", "Food", "Experience", "Gunshowers" feat Elzhi, "Six Degrees" feat Danny Brown and more. ✨✧ VariousYule Struttin – A Blue Note Christmas ... CD
Blue Note, 1990. Used ... Out Of Stock
A relatively recent effort, as far as the Holiday history books go – but a surprisingly nice set that's turned out to be one of the few enduring modern Christmas albums! The strength of the set is its simplicity – a non-gimmicky presentation of Holiday standards, played by some of the bigger Blue Note artists of the late 80s. A few tracks sound a bit dated, but overall, there's a nice jazz component that keeps the set working nicely – supported by one or two older numbers amidst the new material. Titles include "Vauncing Chimes" by Bobby Watson, "The Christmas Song" by Lou Rawls, "A Merrier Christmas" by Benny Green, "Jingle Bells" by Count Basie, "I'll Be Home For Christmas/Sleigh Ride" by Eliane Elias, "Little Drummer Boy" by Rick Margitza, and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" by Dexter Gordon.
