Desmond Dekker & The Aces007 Shanty Town (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Trojan/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1967. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
The legendary debut LP from Desmond Dekker & The Aces – trailblazing recordings that are masterfully laid the groundwork for the international ska scene, popularizing the rude boy style and paving the way for coming reggae phenomenon that was still years down the road! Desmond Dekker's impeccable voice was always so strongly rooted on earlier soul, both Jamaican and global, and the tight rhythms under it laid down by the appropriately-named Aces is aces indeed. Includes the classic title track, "Rude Boy Train" and "Rudy Got Soul", "You've Got Your Troubles", "Keep A Cool Head", "Mother Long Tongue", "Personal Possession", "Unity" and more. ✨✧ Paul DesmondBridge Over Troubled Water ... LP
A&M, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $13.99
Paul Desmond serves up his own versions of some key tunes by Simon & Garfunkel tunes – with results that are simply amazing! The style here takes all the airy brilliance of the original S&G tunes, and turns it towards a more jazz-based mode – one that has some of the slight Brazilian undercurrents in the rhythms that you'll find on Desmond's previous two albums for CTI! The full arrangements are by Don Sebesky, who brings a great sense of balance to the set – and Herbie Hancock plays some great electric piano, in a group that also features Airto on percussion and Gene Bertoncini on guitar. But the real star of the set is Paul Desmond – blowing with that amazing tone of his – and sliding from tune to tune with effortless ease, in a way that really transforms these tunes in their instrumental readings. Titles include "Cecilia", "Mrs. Robinson", "America", "So Long, Frank Lloyd Wright", and "Scarborough Fair" – all done with a sweet jazzy A&M approach! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Paul DesmondComplete 1975 Toronto Recordings (7CD set) ... CD
Mosaic, 1975. New Copy 7CD ... $118.99 119.00
A huge amount of 70s material from the legendary Paul Desmond – all recorded during the year of 1975, with backing from a shifting group of Canadian players – and most of it unissued until now! You'll know some of these tracks from the albums Paul Desmond Quartet Live (A&M), Paul Desmond (Artist House), and Like Someone In Love (Telarc) – but together, the tracks present a much bigger picture of Desmond's genius at the time – really moving past some of the more rigid roles he'd have in his 60s work with Dave Brubeck. Players on most numbers are the trio of Ed Bickert on guitar, Don Thompson on bass, and Jerry Fuller on drums – a really great combo, and the mix of guitar with Desmond's sharply-blown alto is wonderful – a perfect upfront setting for his sound. A few more tracks feature trombonist Rob McDConnell in place of Bickert – which makes for a different, but equally compelling sound – and the whole thing features 51 long tracks, 32 of which appear here for the first time ever – all with the usual great Mosaic Records booklet of notes and presentation. Paul DesmondFrom The Hot Afternoon ... LP
A&M/CTI, 1969. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Incredible stuff – and a record that grows more and more important to us over the years! Desmond's best known as the icy alto behind Dave Brubeck's big records of the 50s, but by this point in his career, he'd developed a keen interest in Brazilian music – and was working at a level that was far more sophisticated than most other American jazzmen interested in Brazil. This incredible record features him working with the arrangements of Don Sebesky, and the Brazilian instrumentation of Edu Lobo, Airto, and Dorio Ferreira. The set's comprised almost entirely of tracks by Lobo and a young Milton Nasimento – and titles include "Faithful Brother", "From The Hot Afternoon", "Crystal Illusions", "October", "Catavento", and "Gira Girou" – all done in these amazing breezy versions that sound like nothing else we can think of! Epic/Legacy, 1974. Used ... $13.99
An album of sublime understatement from alto genius Paul Desmond! Desmond was one of the few players who resisted the lure of the 70s electric CTI sound – and stuck pretty much in his usual bag of easy-going grooves, blowing alto with effortless ease, working here with a quartet that includes Ed Bickert on guitar, Connie Kay on drums, and Ron Carter on bass. The tracks are short, but have that magical Desmond quality to them – no tricks, no electric work, just pure and simple coolly blown jazz. Titles include "Everything I Love", "Just Squeeze Me", "I'm Old Fashioned", "Nuages", and "Why Shouldn't I". CD

RCA/Bluebird, 1962. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A reunion of sorts for Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan – given that the pair had played together on record 5 years before, in a similar session for Verve! This album's almost lighter and more airy than the previous one – as it's done in a mode that echoes strongly with Desmond's own genius at RCA at the time – using a piano-less quartet format that has both horns carving out their own subtle space in sound, hanging together, but each occupying a different range of tonal color. The tracks are relatively longish, and the pair dart around each other nicely on tracks like "All The Things You Are", "Out Of Nowhere", "Blight Of The Fumble Bee", and "Two Of A Mind". RCA/BMG, 1962. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A cool jazz classic from altoist Paul Desmond and guitarist Jim Hall! The album was recorded under Desmond's name, but Hall's the guitarist throughout, and his playing lends an indescribably wonderful edge to the set, making the album a real team effort! Unlike other RCA sides by Hall and Desmond, this one features the pair with larger string backings by Bob Prince, which create a dreamy pillow for alto and guitar to solo across. Titles include the Desmond originals "Late Lament" and "Desmond Blue" – plus "Ill Wind", "My Funny Valentine", and "Like Someone In Love". Perry HemusRhodesmode ... CD
Woodland (UK), 2004. Used ... $9.99
A stunning debut that's well worth all the buzz it's been getting! Perry Hemus – in case you can't guess from the title – is a whiz on the Fender Rhodes, and he's working here in a perfectly-conceived album that's filled with wonderful tunes. Some of the tracks are spare and contemplative – letting Hemus' keys take the lead with light support on percussion – but others soar to the skies on rhythms that are filled with life and joy. A number of tracks feature some great vocals by Lizzy Parks, and other instrumentation includes a lot of acoustic percussion, guitar, trumpet, flute, and upright bass. Really great stuff – with a deeply soulful vibe throughout – and tracks that include "Rhodesmode (freefall mix)", "Closer Point Of View", "Shifting Seasons", "Appointment In Madrid", "Oribiting The Sun", "Pressentimento", "Freedom Dance", and "Changes In 3/4". ✨✧ Jens SondergaardJens Sondergaard Quartet Plays The Brubeck/Desmond Songbook ... CD
Storyville (Denmark), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
A really great take on the sound of the Dave Brubeck/Paul Desmond quartet of the 50s and 60s – that magical unit that really transformed the sound of jazz at the time, and continues to hold strong over the decades! The approach here, though, is also a nice change from Paul and Dave – in that Jens Sondergaard has maybe a bit more spirit in his alto, and also plays soprano sax too – and is matched by some fantastic piano from Ole Kock Hansen, a player with a much more organic flow than Brubeck – not that we don't like Dave's piano, but Ole's got a warmth that really changes things up – as does the bass work of Lasse Lundstrom, who's upfront and full in the mix, and also brings a lot of humanity to the proceedings! Tunes are all gems from the key years of the original group – and titles include "Why Not", "Bossa Antiqua", "The Duke", "Broadway Bossa Nova", "Embarcadero", "In Your Own Sweet Way", and "Brandenburger Gate". Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), 1973. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer double-length set of work from Desmond Dekker – one that's put together by Trojan Records to feature all the lesser-known and unreleased tracks that Desmond recorded during the years of his initial hits! As such, the album's a treasure trove of work that goes way past the oft-issued singles that Desmond cut in the late 60s and early 70s – tracks that are wonderful, and some of our favorites – but which are greatly expanded here! Dekker's voice is fantastic – as always – one of the sweetest soul sounds in Jamaican music – and the grooves are a mix of rocksteady and new reggae modes that were bubbling forth at the time. Titles include "Look What They're Doing To Me", "Life Of Opportunity", "Little Darling", "Warlock", "Licking Stick", "Hippopotamus", "The Song We Used To Sing", "Go & Tell My People", "Trample", "What Will You Gain", "My Reward", "Mother Nature", and "Life Hope & Faith". A pair of early albums from Desmond Dekker & The Aces – both done right before the Jamaican group exploded with global fame – and were completely at the top of their powers! Actually, Dekker never seemed to falter at all – and right from the start, he's tremendous – this sweet-voiced, richly soulful singer who might have been Jamaica's answer to Sam Cooke – save maybe for the sharper edge he achieves working here with his classic group. The mix of Desmond's lead and the group's harmonies are set up in rocksteady rhythms throughout – on titles that include "007", "Sabotage", "Ah It Mek", "Rude Boy Train", "Sweet Music", "Coconut Water", "Wise Man", "Intensified", "You've Got Your Troubles", "Mother Young Girl", and "Keep A Cool Head". Both albums come with loads of bonus tracks – and the 2CD set features 52 tracks in all! CD

The first big Paul Desmond solo album of the 60s – and a standout set that's very much in the tradition of his best work on RCA! This rare side was cut for Warner Brothers during a time when they were taking a brief dip into jazz – and it's a rarely-heard set that features Jim Hall on guitar, Connie Kay on drums, and Percy Heath on bass, all backing up Paul with a spare "after hours" sound that's a marked change from his tightly woven work with Brubeck. Desmond's alto is full of possibilities here – working wonders with familiar tunes like "Greensleeves", "You Go To My Head", "Time After Time", and "East Of The Sun" – as well as with the John Lewis modern number "2 Degrees East, 3 Degrees West". Red Baron, 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A rare pairing, and a great one too – as Paul Desmond joins the Modern Jazz Quartet for a unique live set from the early 70s – with a great sound that's even more wonderful than we expected! Desmond is always great no matter what the setting – but he sounds especially nice working here alongside the mix of piano and vibes offered by the MJQ – in a style that's subtle, but never as sleepy as some of their other records from the period, thanks to some sharper edges from Desmond. The alto sax really brings something new to this record – carving out snakey little lines that glow and glimmer with a nicely subdued soul – and in a way, the MJQ really just seem to be holding back in a role where they're Paul's accompanists, and not the main stars of the set. Titles include "Greensleeves", "Blue Dove", "You Go To My Head", "East Of The Sun", "Here's That Rainy Day", "Bag's New Groove", and "Jesus Christ Superstar". CD

RCA/Victor, Early/Mid 60s. Used 5 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Genius in one of its purest forms! Paul Desmond's alto sax was honed to perfection by the time of these recordings – worked out through fame in the Dave Brubeck Quartet years of the late 50s and early 60s, but also relaxed in a confidence that makes these sides completely majestic, and utterly fantastic! Desmond's tone and approach are languid – but in a way that's incredibly compelling: notes just floating out of the horn, almost effortlessly, seeming not to come from Desmond himself, but to him, gathered together by his warmth and good wit, honed in further by the spare and gentle guitar work of the great Jim Hall. This package is the finest tribute we could think of to their brilliant work together – a wonderfully-done 5CD set, with a lovely slipcase and book, done in a way that retains the structure of the original albums, yet also adds in bonus tracks. There's a whopping 55 cuts in all – and every single one of them's a gem! CD

✨✧ Chet BakerShe Was Too Good To Me (plus bonus track) ... CD
CTI, 1974. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A great return to form for Chet Baker – his first record in a number of years away from the studio, and proof that his genius could adapt to just about any setting! The album's got a tight focus that's probably one of the keys to its success – a set of arrangements by Don Sebesky that mix lusher moments with some more tightly snapping rhythms – a blend that allows Chet to display the full range of his talents without veering too far in one direction. Paul Desmond plays some great alto on the record, really bringing in a strong sense of crispness to a few numbers – and instrumentation also includes great electric piano from Bob James, vibes from Dave Friedman, and flute from Hubert Laws. Baker sings on a few numbers, and titles include "Autumn Leaves", "She Was Too Good To Me", "Funk In Deep Freeze", "Tangerine", "With A Song In My Heart", "What'll I Do", and "It's You Or No One". CD also features the previously unreleased track "My Future Just Passed". CD

Chet BakerYou Can't Go Home Again/Best Thing For You (with bonus tracks) ... CD
A&M/Verve, 1977. Used 2 CDs ... $26.99
2 CD set of the albums "You Can't Go Home Again" and "The Best Thing For You", as well as 9 bonus tracks! A surprisingly great electric session by Chet Baker from the 70s – and a record that's got a bit more force and power than most of his other sets at the time! The format here is a bit tighter and more focused than Baker's recordings for CTI from the period – with electric piano from Kenny Barron or Richie Beirach on all tracks, plus guitar on 3 of the album's 4 tracks, and a fair bit of other horns to flesh out the overall sound. The approach isn't exactly funky, but it's quite driving at times – and Baker's work on trumpet is more sharply pronounced in the setting – a bit bolder and less sorry for itself, with a majesty that rises above the potentially-cluttered feel of the set to take its own at the top. Titles are all long – and include "Love For Sale", "Un Poco Loco", "You Can't Go Home Again", and "El Morro". Lost material by Chet Baker – recorded for his late 70s album You Can't Go Home Again, and released in this special package after his untimely death in 1988. As with the album that did get released, there's a focus here that's a nice change from some of Baker's looser European material of later years – a sense of Chet's presence and phrasing that comes through quite strongly, and which is supported here by a sensitive group of top-shelf accompanists who include Paul Desmond, Kenny Barron, Tony Williams, and Ron Carter. The set features a great 17 minute take on "El Morro" by arranger/producer Don Sebesky – plus the tracks "Oh You Crazy Moon", "If You Could See Me Now", "The Best Thing For You", and "You've Changed". A classic album from Dave – recorded at Oberlin College, the mid-Ohio haven of bohemiana, and a growing hotbed of jazz activity centered around students in the college's conservatory of music. Dave and crew made the trip at the request of the kids – breaking from their mostly San Francisco-based recording career to cut what would end up becoming a very successful album in Dave's catalog, and begin a whole "at" or "goes to" series in his career. Dave's still working out some nutty time signatures here – but apart from the science, the thing that really makes the record cook is Desmond's alto – icy, edgey, floating, and always a treat – almost even more amazing in the space of some of these offbeat numbers. VariousDown Town Albums Collection (Red Red Wine Vols 1 & 2/Blow Your Horn/Your Musical Doctor/bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan/Doctor Bird (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $9.99
A treasure trove of reggae, rocksteady, and blue beat work from the late 60s – all of it originally released under the guidance of producer Dandy – also a reggae artists of his own, with roots in Kingston, and working here with a big impact on the UK scene! The albums here were all originally issued on the Down Town imprint – a small sub label that Trojan Records gave to Dandy for his own projects – which resulted in the two killer compilations Red Red Wine volumes 1 and 2 – a great overview of some of the strongly soul-influenced sounds that were bubbling up in London at the time. Dandy himself is one of the key artists on the collection – and titles include "Move Your Mule", "I'm Your Puppet", "Reggae In Your Jeggae", "Got To Come Back", "Raining In My Heart", and "Can't Get Used To Losing You" by Dandy – plus "Red Red Wine" and "I'm Gonna Give Her All The Love I've Got" by Tony Tribe, "Someday We'll Be Together" and "Love Me Tonight" by Audrey, "Lover's Question" and "Spreading Love" by Gene Rondo, "Lead Them" by Desmond Riley, "Games People Play" by The Israelites, and "Song Byrd" by Lyndon Johns. CD2 begins with the Trojan classic Blow Your Horn by Rico & The Rudies – a classic early album from Rico – the legendary Jamaican trombonist who's gotta be one of the few people who can pose with his instrument and still look pretty badass overall! That quality also comes through in Rico's music – a famous lead trombone sound on countless Jamaican recordings from the ska years onwards – really given some great time here in the spotlight on a set of tunes that soar out with lots of rough rocksteady rhythms! Rico blows strongly and soulfully – on titles that include "Rico's Message", "Niyah Man", "Caribbean Serenade", "Jumping The Gun", "Mighty Dan", "Session Begin", "Biafra", and "Quando Quando" – and the album also features some guest appearances on "The Lion" by Dandy, and on "Muma Muma" by The Israelites. Last up is Your Musical Doctor – a full album with Dandy as the lead singer on his own – with titles that include "Touch Of Poison", "Everybody Loves A Winner", "Gumption Feeling", "Meeting Over Yonder", "Here I Go Again", "Come On Home", and "Run Girl". 2CD set features 51 tracks in all – with a few more bonus tracks too! ✨✧ Dave BrubeckJazz At Oberlin (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Fantasy, 1953. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The group's the early quartet with Paul Desmond, Lloyd Davis, and Ron Crotty – and tunes include long and jamming versions of "The Way You Look Tonight", "How High The Moon", and "Stardust". CD

✨✧ Dave BrubeckJazz At The College Of The Pacific (20 bit remaster) ... CD
Fantasy, 1953. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Classic early live material from the Dave Brubeck Quartet – already humming along nicely with some great alto sax from Paul Desmond! The group's in fine form here – a bit more relaxed and open than on their Columbia recordings – with plenty of creative piano lines from Dave, showing just a slight dose of modernism, and lots more of that cool, icy alto sax work that made Desmond a standout right from the start. Rhythm is by Ron Crotty on bass and Joe Dodge on drums – and titles include "Laura", "Lullaby In Rhythm", "For All We Know", "All The Things You Are", and "I'll Never Smile Again". CD
(Out of print, includes slipcase.)

✨✧ Carmen McRae & Dave BrubeckTake Five – Recorded Live At Basin Street East ... LP
Columbia, 1961. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A rare jazz vocal album from Dave Brubeck – one that has the famous pianist working here with Carmen McRae – who served up a hose of vocal versions of some of Dave's best compositions! The format is a great one – a really fresh take on the Brubeck idiom, and a setting that makes the album one of Carmen's hippest ever – with a freer swing and deeper soul than most other dates of the 50s and 60s. Brubeck's group features lots of great alto from Paul Desmond – plus Gene Wright on bass and Joe Morello on drums – and titles include "Melanctha", "In Your Own Sweet Way", "Travellin Blues", "It's A Raggy Waltz", "Take Five", "Lord Lord", and "Ode To A Cowboy". Trojan (UK), 1960s/1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Another mad mod collection of jumping R&B jams from Jamaica! Just like the blinding first Work Your Soul set, this disc proves that hopping ska tracks and scorching roots reggae weren't the only musical exports from Jamaica. You might guess from the artists included that this comp is in the vein of the reggae covers or reggae soul collections Trojan and other labels have issued, but what you're getting here is straight rhythm and blues, 25 smoking tracks that just might be the best two dozen rare soul and R&B numbers you've heard this year, or any year for that matter! Includes "Got The Feeling" b the Mighty Vikings, "Inspired To Love You" and "I've Got To Get There" by the Blues Busters, "Tell Me What It's About" and "Come Back Girl" by Jackie Edwards, "Shake Some Time" by Ronnie Gordon, "I'm Just A Guy" by Alton & Phyllis, "Ooh, Ooh" by Jackie & Millie, "Sugar" by Joyce Bond, "Feeling Peckish" by Bobby Ellis, "Give Him Up" by the First Generation, "Wide Awake In A Dream" by Philip James and "My Precious Love" by Desmond Dekker & The Aces. ✨✧ Dave BrubeckJazz – Red Hot & Cool ... LP

A sweet live set from Dave Brubeck's early years on Columbia Records – recorded in New York, but with all the calculated cool and modern tones Brubeck first forged in the San Francisco scene of the 50s! Paul Desmond's on board on alto sax – really getting a lot of space to stretch out on the album's extended performances, with a haunting, floating tone that really sends us. Remaining members include Bob Bates on bass, and Joe Dodge on drums – and tracks include "Lover", "Love Walked In", "The Duke", "Little Girl Blue", and "Fare Thee Well Annabelle". Trojan (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 10 x 7 inch box set ... Out Of Stock
A host of killer cuts from the legendary Trojan Records – all pulled together here in a very limited box set! The package features songs chosen by Paul Smiler Anderson and Mark Baxter in tandem with their book on UK skinhead culture – a working class underground that rose up in the late 60s with a very different vibe than its later American counterpart – British kids who were more down to earth than mods, and who had as much of an open ear for sounds from the new immigrants to London as they did for the previous generation's American soul. This set really shows the kind of special cuts that broke big with the crowd – and titles include "Bang Bang Lulu" by Lloyd Terrel, "Train To Soulsville" by Cool Sticky, "Skinhead Girl" by Symarip, "CN Express (part 1)" by Clancy's All Stars, "I Can't Get Next To You" by Dave Barker & The Charmers, "Worries" by The Versatiles, "It Miek" by Desmond Dekker & The Aces, "Freedom Street" by Ken Boothe, "Soul Food" by Lyn Taitt & The Jets, "Don't Stay Away" by Phyllis Dillon, "The Scorcher" by Errol Dunkley, and "Shades Of Hudson" by Dennis Alcapone. 7-inch, Vinyl record
