Giles, Giles, & FrippCheerful Insanity Of Giles, Giles, & Fripp (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Deram/Universal (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... $13.99
Important work from Robert Fripp and the brothers Peter & Michael Giles – recorded a year before the first King Crimson album with a mad sound that's somewhere in between Bowie's early Deram recordings, and some of the Syd Barrett work with Pink Floyd! Although Fripp's guitar figures nicely in the sound of the group, the overall style is much more whimsical and heavily arranged than any of his later work – done with a playful blend of strings and piano, and also some surprising jazz undercurrents from time to time. There's none of the overblown modes of the early King Crimson sound – and if anything, the record's a charmingly understated set that's ripe for rediscovery by ears trained on newly revived strands of 60s music! Titles include "The Sun Is Shining", "One In A Million", "Saga Of Rodney Toady", "North Meadow", "Call Tomorrow", "Digging My Lawn", "Erudite Eyes", and "The Crukster". CD features 6 bonus tracks – including "She Is Loaded", "Under The Sky", "Newly Weds (single)", and "One In A Million (mono)". CD

Keef Hartley BandTime Is Near ... CD
Deram/Esoteric (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $14.99 20.99
Easily one of the greatest records ever from the Keef Hartley Band – and certainly the group's jazziest! The album's awash in great horn parts that dance along beautifully with the rootsier vocals of the set – sung by guitarist Miller Anderson, in a rough-edged style that has some American bluesy overtones. The set features a great instrumental called "Premonition" – a really tasty little jazz rocker – and saxophonist Jimmy Jewell and trumpeter Henry Lowther get in some great licks on the album as well. Titles include "Morning Rain", "The Time Is Near", "Another Time Another Place", "Change", and "Premonition". CD

Ten Years AfterStonedhenge ... LP
Deram, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $14.99
The title and cover are a great illustration of the direction that Ten Years After is taking here – a really wonderful blend of trippier influences with the sharp-edged, blues-influenced sound at their core! Even a look at the surface of the record will show you that something different is going on – as one track will be long, the other quite short, and others of varying lengths – really showcasing the variety the group's breaking out with here! Alvin Lee is completely on fire – really hitting Hendrix territory at a few points, such as the incredible "Skoobly Oobly Doobob", which features him scatting alongside a super-fast guitar part! Other titles are equally inventive – as are some of the way the sounds come across, even from familiar instruments – on titles that include "Hear Me Calling", "Going To Try", "Woman Trouble", "No Title", "Faro", "Speed Kills", and "A Sad Song". Ten Years AfterUndead ... LP
Deram, 1968. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A searing live document of the magic of Ten Years After – recorded at London's Klooks Kleek as a great example of the kind of sound that got the group a huge amount of attention before they were even signed to a record label! The sound's still got some of the bluesy influences that both the group and that club were known for – but the guitar of Alvin Lee is really taking off, especially on the album's very long tracks – which seem to insist on solos that would go onto influence a whole psychedelic generation. The Hammond solos are great, too – and titles include "I May Be Wrong But I Won't Be Wrong Always", "Spider In My Web", "I'm Going Home", and a surprisingly great take on Woody Herman's "Woodchopper's Ball", which is completely transformed here! (Stereo UK pressing. Cover has ring and edge wear with fully unglued seams.)

Deram/Esoteric (UK), 1970. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tripped out, hard rocking, and massively powerful stuff by this little-known British group from the early 70s – a group who clearly have picked up some of the progressive leanings of the jazz rock scene of the time, but who manage to hone the whole thing down into a really focused sound! Some of the real charms of the record come from the way it creates a hard-rocking style by blending fuzzy bass with organ, piano, celeste, vibes, and marimba – making for a guitar-less set that has some nice mystical overtones. Titles include "Copper Sunset", "The Outing – Yes", "Once Upon A Hill", "I Can't Stop", "Put That In Your Pipe & Smoke It", and "Very Nice Of You To Call". CD

✨✧ Mike WestbrookLove Songs ... LP
Deram/Endless Happiness, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic stuff! This groovy groovy record stands as one of the finest recordings ever made by 60s Brit jazz legend Mike Westbrook – a lively and rhythmic meeting of some of the best young talents on the London scene of the time, topped off with incredible vocals from the lovely Norma Winstone! The tracks all have a rolling modal-styled groove – slightly funky at the bottom, with some really offbeat horn parts that stretch into the sky, and dance alongside the vocals at a level that's never been matched on any other Westbrook album. There's a sense of joy here that's just incredible – really soaring, ebullient, and buoyant – but never cliched or overly hippy dippy! Players include Paul Rutherford, Mike Osborne, Chris Spedding, and Harry Miller – and titles include "Original Peter", "Love Song", and "Autumn King". LP, Vinyl record album

Deram (UK), 1996. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
This great comp came out a few years ago, but has sort of fallen through the cracks in recent years. Don't miss it, though, because it's a great batch of groovy and easy tracks, put together by the fab Karminsky Brothers, and including a huge amount of great cuts from the Polygram back catalog that we never see on wax. The set's especially good in British and European easy tracks, and includes titles like "Let The Love Come Through" by Roland Shaw, "Di Gue Ding Ding" by Michel Legrand, "Paramaribo" by John Schroeder, "Blues A Go Go" by Lalo Schifrin, "Catwalk" by Pete Moore, "They Call Me Mr. Tibbs" by Chaquito Big Band, "Discotheque" by Augusto Alguero, and lots lots more! Very groovy, very nicely packaged, and an excellent selection of rare tunes with a great easy feel! CD

Deram/Lion, 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A record with a much harder edge than you'd expect from the cover – not the ancient vibe of a medieval crusade, or the religiosity in the title – and instead this searing entry to the hard rock underground at the time! The group have a really heavy Black Sabbath sort of sound – with excellent lead guitars from Bob Cooke, and a sinister sound that has the grooves really dipping down into the depths, pushed even further by evil-edged vocals from singer Lynden Williams. The album's got the raw power of Sabbath's best work – and the whole thing's a killer record that should have been an instant classic. Titles include "Midnight Steamer", "Frustration", "Hooded Eagle", "Primitive Man", "She Came Like A Bat Out Of Hell", and "When The Wolf Sits". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ World Of OzWorld Of Oz ... CD
Deram/Universal (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Beautifully baroque work from The World Of Oz – a group who share some of the dreamy vocal stylings of the Bee Gees at the time, but who also work here in a fuller sound that benefits from some groovy arrangements from John Cameron and Mike Vickers! The tunes on the set have a lovely sing-song kind of quality – taking a childlike approach to the subject matter, then tripping them out a lot – almost in an early Status Quo sort of mode, but again with more poise and grooviness. And thanks to the Brit Easy backings on the best tracks, there's even some slightly funky touches that groove the album more than you'd expect from the title and cover – making it even more of a treasure to our ears! Titles include "Bring The Ring", "Beside The Fire", "The Hum Gum Man", "With A Little Help", "Willow's Harp", "Like A Tear", and "We've All Seen The Queen". CD

✨✧ Bill FayTime Of The Last Persecution (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Deram (Italy), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The heady second album from Bill Fay – much more introspective and moodier than his first outing for Deram, and a session done in tight collaboration with British guitar legend Ray Russell! Russell's got Fay working here with a much smaller group than on the first album – a collection of jazz-influenced players that includes Nick Evans on trombone, Tony Roberts on reeds, and Alan Rushton on drums – all working with Russell's guitar in an intimate, slightly folksy setting. Fay's songwriting and vocals are darker than before – as can easily be told from the titles of tunes like "Don't Let My Marigolds Die", "Dust Filled Room", "Pictures Of Adolf Again", and "Til The Christ Come Back". But somehow, Fay manages to pull the whole thing off beautifully – with none of the cliches or heavy-handed styles you might expect, really working in a transcendent mode that reminds us of the best of early Leonard Cohen. Wonderful work from the early Thin Lizzy trio lineup – a record that has all the power of their later records, but which also mixes in some airier moments that really help shape the sound! These guys are already setting themselves apart from their psych or blues rock predecessors – thanks to Phil Lynott's wonderful vocals and unique approach to a tune – which gives the record loads of great moments that don't always get their due! Marvelous work from pianist Mike Taylor – maybe the greatest album we've ever heard from this under-recognized British genius, and a set that's got some of Taylor's most inventive writing and arrangements! The group's larger than some of Taylor's usual settings – and features John Surman on soprano sax, Stan Sulzmann on alto, Chris Pyne on trombone, and Kenny Wheeler on trumpet – all players who are arranged in this style that lets them break free in strongly voiced solos, while still also hewing to Mike's wonderful sense of color and tone – a mix of structure and individual creativity that's a bit like some of the early Surman work on Deram, or that label's music with some of his contemporaries. The group also features Chris Laurence on bass and Tony Levin on drums – and Norma Winstone adds in some heavenly vocalizations at points. Titles include "And Think Again", "White Magic", "Pause", "Interlude/Soft Winds", and "Awakening/Eye To Eye". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mike WestbrookLast Night At The Old Place ... CD
Cadillac (UK), 1968. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really fantastic live performance by the Mike Westbrook Concert Band – recorded right around the same time as his seminal albums for Deram – and with an equally amazing sound! The "old place" here is Ronnie Scott's old club – which was still leased for a few months as the new one was being opened in 1968, which gave Westbrook and other young musicians the chance to try out some of the incredible new ideas that would really set the British jazz scene apart in the late 60s! There's a pivotal feel to the record that's wonderful – really informing the explosion of sounds on Westbrook's late 60s albums, as he uses both older jazz compositions and his own great work – to make a pastiche of modes and modern moments that really blows us away – served up by a lineup that includes Mike Osborne and John Surman on saxes, Malcolm Griffiths and Paul Rutherford on trombones, Dave Holdsworth on piano, Harry Miller on bass, and Alan Jackson on drums – with Westbrook leading the group on piano. Titles include "Who's Who", "A Life Of It's Own", "The Few", "Lover Man", "For Ever & A Day", "Folk Song", "We Salute You", "Flying", and "Can't Get It Out Of My Mind". CD

✨✧ Tintern AbbeyBeeside – The Complete Recordings ... CD
Decca/Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed collection of work from Tintern Abbey – a group who recorded one famous psych single for the Deram label in 1967 – then seemingly disappeared from the scene before giving the world any sort of a full album! This set corrects that mistake, and then some – as it brings together a total of 36 tracks recorded by the group, including material designed for a follow-up, and lots of other gems that appear here for the first time ever – a really magnificent batch of music that may well have you putting Tintern Abbey right up there next to some of your favorite late 60s London psychedelic acts! They're not entirely Pink Floyd, but they've got more than enough chops to match the rest of the best of that heady late 60s moment – freaky fuzzy guitar when needed, a great sense of presentation and production, and a really dark sensibility with both the lyrics, and the way they are phrased – which makes even some of the demo tracks come across beautifully. Titles include the single "Beeside" and "Vacuum Cleaner" – plus cuts that include "My Zoo", "Magic Horseman", "Naked Song", "Snowman", "Strange Dame", "Let The Wind Blow", "Stickleback", "Life Goes By", "My Prayer", "Tanya", "Black Jack", and "Bodmin Blow".
