Chicken ShackCrying Won't Help You Now – The Deram Years 1971 to 1974 (Imagination Lady/Unlucky Boy/Goodbye/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Deram/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 39.99
British group Chicken Shack famously first got their start on the Blue Horizon label – but when they moved to Deram Records, they really stretched out and opened their sound – as you'll hear on the three albums on this set! First up is Imagination Lady – a fantastic album from this legendary British group – a bluesy rock combo who grew up in the same space as Fleetwood Mac and Savoy Brown, but who never fully got their due on this side of the Atlantic! The group here is a unique lineup that only recorded this one album – a trio with John Glascock on bass and Paul Hancox on drums – two players who give leader Stan Webb plenty of space in the spotlight, which means a very strong emphasis on his mindblowing work on guitar! Webb's a musician with the chops of contemporaries Eric Clapton and Peter Green, and you can definitely hear that here – and, like his contemporaries, Stan is also really taking the music way past its bluesy inspirations – using the trio to maybe bring in more of a hard rock vibe, yet never going too far in that direction either. Titles include "Daughter Of The Hillside", "Crying Won't Help You Now", "The Loser", "Telling Your Fortune", and "Poor Boy". Next is Unlucky Boy – a set that has Chicken Shack really refining the blues inspirations of their roots, heading into hard rock territory, and really helping define a sound that so many other groups would soon steal and use to great radio fame! The vocals of Stan Webb are recorded with a nice sort of echo at times – more 70s guitar hero than before, but at a level that really makes them even more powerful, and less straight blues-inspired at times – bold, powerful, and with a quality that should have made Webb one of the better-remembered greats of his generation! Titles include "Revelation", "Stan The Man", "Jammin With The Ash", "Unlucky Boy", and "You Know Could Be Right". Last up is Goodbye – a set that maybe has Chicken Shack stripping things down even more than the previous record – almost going back to their blues roots, but with all the lessons that they'd learned over other albums! Stan Webb is still a hell of a frontman, on both vocals and guitar – and titles include "Going Down", "Webb's Boogie", "You're Mean", "Poor Boy", "Webb's Guitar Shuffle", and "You Take Me Down". 3CD set features bonus tracks – single versions of "Poor Boy", "As Time Goes Passing By", and "Telling Your Fortune". Keef Hartley BandBattle Of North West Six ... CD
Deram/Esoteric (UK), 1969. New Copy ... $14.99 20.99
A tremendous set from one of the best – and most under-recognized – groups of the British jazz rock scene at the end of the 60s! The group have an approach that mixes heavy blues-influenced jamming with some of the lighter, more lyrical touches that were showing up at the time – in a way that gives them a firmly grounded sound at one level, but also a slightly more sophisticated, contemplative approach – making the group almost a UK equivalent to the sound of the Steve Miller Band at the time. The jazzier tracks on the album feature work by some great straight British players – including Harry Beckett and Ray Warleigh – and the album's also got a few nice slightly funky cuts that are known for their breaks! Tracks include "The Dansette Kid", "Hickory", "Not Foolish, Not Wise", "Poor Mabel", "Believe In Me", "Don't Give Up", "Hickory", and "Tadpole". CD

✨✧ Keef Hartley BandSinnin For You – The Albums 1969 to 1973 (7CD set) ... CD
Deram/Esoteric (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 7CD ... $44.99 68.99
A tremendous run of music from the great Keef Hartley – a British drummer who was maybe not the biggest name on the scene, but who created some wonderfully groovy music on the albums in this set! The records are a brilliant blend of jazz and rock elements, but in ways that are so different from so many other jazz rock records of the time – maybe in part because Hartley could always bring a lot of soul and a bit of funk to his drums, while still also keeping things in more of the rock side of the spectrum overall – yet opening the door to let in some key jazz musicians from session to session – including trumpeters Harry Beckett and Henry Lowther, reedmen Johnny Almond and Jimmy Jewell, and organist Wynder K Frog – just a few of the players who really give these records a special sort of vibe! It's a bit hard to peg the sound of the records in just a few words – in part because they each have their own flavor – but they're all great, not a weak one in the bunch – and the package features the full albums Halfbreed, Battle Of North West Six, Overdug, Time Is Near, Little Big Band, Seventy Second Brave, and Lancashire Hustler. PLUS, there's also 15 bonus tracks added to the set – mostly live, and some live in studio! CD

John Mayall's Blues BreakersJohn Mayall With Eric Clapton (aka Blues Breakers With Eric Clapton) ... LP
Deram/London, 1966. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Possibly one of the best-remembered albums by John Mayall's legendary Blues Breakers combo – thanks to vocals and guitar from a young Eric Clapton! Clapton at this point is way fresher than in later years – not prone to cliches, and still coming across with a raw, edgey power that is drenched in American blues tradition. Mayall's great too – wailing on harmonica, organ, and piano – and other members of the core group include John McVie on bass and Hughie Flint on drums – augmented by contributions from UK jazzers John Almond on baritone sax and Alan Skidmore on tenor. Titles include "All Your Love", "Little Girl", "Key To Love", "Parchman Farm", "Have You Heard", "It Ain't Right", and "Steppin Out". LP, Vinyl record album

Procol HarumProcol Harum ... LP
Deram, 1967. Very Good+ ... $34.99
The amazing first album from Procol Harum – a group with a sound that's still unlike anyone else we can think of – even though they were a key part of the London scene of the 60s! The group are steeped in all of the blues, soul, and jazz elements that influenced so many other British acts of the period – but they have this way of presenting the music that brings a whole new sort of drama to the music – this flair that never overwhelms, and instead embellishes the music in this really special way – so that the tunes have this brilliance that's kept them fresh for many decades to follow! Lead singer Gary Brooker is a key part of the record's magic – a very distinctive singer – and a young Robin Trower contributes plenty on guitar, as does Matthew Fisher on Hammond. But there's also some arrangements that really set the whole thing in an unusual direction – and which make the record way more than just another bluesy rock set from the time. Hard to argue with the baroque brilliance of "She Wandered Through The Garden Fence", "A Christmas Camel", "Salad Days", "Repent Walpurgis", and "Conquistador" – not to mention the hit, "Whiter Shade Of Pale". Ten Years AfterTen Years After ... LP
Deram, 1967. Near Mint- ... $19.99 29.99
The great first album from Ten Years After – recorded at a time when the group were maybe more strongly linked to the bluesy sounds of the beat group generation than in later years – although still with a hint of some of the trippy touches to come! There's a surprisingly strong dedication to American blues roots at many moments – not just on some of the songs by Sonny Boy Williamson or Willie Dixon – but, maybe thanks to producer Mike Vernon, or more likely the genius of Alvin Lee, the guitars are already getting a bit fuzzy at times, and the keyboards have some unusual tones that you never would have heard on the south side of Chicago. Titles include "I Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes", "Spoonful", "Feel It For Me", "Help Me", "Adventures Of A Young Organ", "I Want To Know", and "Losing The Dogs". LP, Vinyl record album

Deram, 1968. Very Good+ ... $11.99 19.99
A searing live document of the magic of Ten Years After – recorded at London's Klooks Kleek as a great example of the kind of sound that got the group a huge amount of attention before they were even signed to a record label! The sound's still got some of the bluesy influences that both the group and that club were known for – but the guitar of Alvin Lee is really taking off, especially on the album's very long tracks – which seem to insist on solos that would go onto influence a whole psychedelic generation. The Hammond solos are great, too – and titles include "I May Be Wrong But I Won't Be Wrong Always", "Spider In My Web", "I'm Going Home", and a surprisingly great take on Woody Herman's "Woodchopper's Ball", which is completely transformed here! Mike WestbrookCelebration ... LP
Deram (UK), 1967. Sealed ... $14.99
The first album by British bandleader Mike Westbrook – and a searing session that crackles with energy that's missing from much of his later work! The album features Westbrook unlocking a whole new chapter in British jazz – bringing together a host of top-shelf London players that include John Surman on baritone and soprano saxes, Mike Osborne on alto, and Harry Miller on bass – all working in an array of rich colors, tones, and musical shapes – swinging all the time, but also managing to explore some pretty heady space! The whole thing's amazing – never bogged down in its own sense of self – and simply a fresh, bold statement by a young talent ready to set the world on fire! Mike WestbrookMarching Song Vol 1 ... LP
Deram (UK), 1969. Sealed ... $19.99
The brilliant 3rd album from Mike Westbrook – a sharp-edged, two volume set with a scathing anti-war theme! The work is Westbrook's first total-concept album, and it's still one of his best – written with an edge that's free from some of the more whimsical touches that showed up in Mike's later years, and played by a core group of British avant soloists with searing intensity! You've never heard large group scoring like this – bold, ambitious, and quite different than most of what's come before. And although the whole thing sounds as if it's going to fall apart at any moment, it always snaps back into a sharp focus just in the nick of time – with brilliant results that bring the same sense of surprise that you might get from, say, a classic album from Charles Mingus or Archie Shepp! Players include Kenny Wheeler and Henry Lowther on trumpets, Mike Gibbs and Paul Rutherford on trombones, John Surman on baritone and soprano sax, Mike Osborne on alto and clarinet, Alan Skidmore on tenor and flute, Brian Smith on tenor, and Harry Miller and Barre Phillips on bass. Titles on this first volume include "Landscape", "Hooray", "Other World", and "Marching Song". LP, Vinyl record album

Mike WestbrookRelease ... LP
Deram (UK), 1968. Sealed ... $14.99
A rarity from 1968 – Mike Westbrook's 2nd album, and a seminal work in the development of his messed-up large group style. On the outside, this is a big band recording, featuring a lineup of great Brit players that includes John Surman, Mike Osborne, Paul Rutherford, and others. Yet although Westbrook has clearly been influenced by modern large group arrangers like Gil Evans and Mingus, he's also throwing in a lot of New York avant ideas here, mixed with some of the brilliant cultural crossover styles that were brewing in London at the time. The record's tough to describe, but it's got an amazing mix of styles that rumbles through a range of material that includes originals like "The Few", "We Salute You", and "Take Me Back" – plus odd covers like "Sugar", "Girl From Ipanema", and "Lover Man". An amazing extended journey that never lets up for a second! LP, Vinyl record album

One of the most enigmatic groups of the British scene of the 70s – a folksy outfit with a sound that often has a real late 60s approach, but which is also produced here with some nice compressed studio touches that we really love! The style is a bit hard to peg, but there's bits of Celtic music in the mix – alongside a more straightforward level of rhythm and instrumentation – far more so than the group's previous record for Decca. Vocalist Mandy Morton has a sound that's strong enough to carry the record on its own, but the support from the group is great – and a few tracks even feature some nice use of strings to sweeten up the tunes. Titles include "For You", "All Before", "Time Will Pass", "White Witch", "Dead Man's Eyes", "You're Not There", and "Blackwaterside". CD

Henry Lowther's QuarternityNever Never Land ... CD
Jazz In Britain (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $22.99 24.99
A much-needed addition to the small catalog of music that features trumpeter Henry Lowther as a leader – a key player in the UK jazz scene during that revolutionary late 60s/early 70s moment – but one who only gave the world one important record for the Deram label at the time! This double-length set really fills in the space in Henry's catalog – and offers up some wonderful live material from the London scene of the mid 70s – with Lowther on trumpet and flugelhorn, stepping out in a core quartet that has some really wonderful guitar from Phil Lee, next to bass from Dave Green and drums from Trevor Tompkins! Lee is a fantastically diverse player, as is Lowther, and together the pair really break down expectations – with music that's neither too free, nor too rock-influenced – and instead has a sensitivity we've never heard from Lowther at this level. Some tracks feature guest reed work – either from Art Themen or Alan Wakeman – both of whom play tenor and soprano – and titles include "Chinese Wand", "Never Never Land", "The Story So Far", "Night In Amnesia", "Richie Street No 1", "Your Dancing Toes", "No Surprises", and "Zemlja". SynFlowerman – Rare Blooms From Syn 1965 to 1969 ... CD
Decca/Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 20.99
Fantastic work from Syn – a British group who are maybe best-remembered for giving the world future prog giants Chris Squire and Peter Banks – but who are already pretty darn great even without that later legacy of sound! The vibe here is a bit like Tomorrow – the early home of Steve Howe – in that the songs are mostly short, focused, and tuneful, but have all sorts of wonderfully new ideas and trippy touches around the edges – deeper than pop psych material coming out of the US at the time, but equally catchy in its own sort of way! The "rare" here refers to the fact that Syn played heavily at the time, but didn't record that much – so the set brings together a few rare Deram singles, but then also includes a number of never-issued tracks from the time time – all supported by a heavy booklet of notes that really opens up their story. Titles include "Created By Clive", "Merry Go Round", "Flowerman (demo)", "Love You", "The Last Performance Of The Regimental Very Victorious & Valiant Band", "Mister White's White Flying Machine", "The Gangster Opera", and "14 Hour Technicolor Dream". Also features an unusual new track recorded in 2004 – and two related 1974 tracks by Narsquijack. CD

A much-needed collection of work from Tintern Abbey – a group who recorded one famous psych single for the Deram label in 1967 – then seemingly disappeared from the scene before giving the world any sort of a full album! They're not entirely Pink Floyd, but they've got more than enough chops to match the rest of the best of that heady late 60s moment – freaky fuzzy guitar when needed, a great sense of presentation and production, and a really dark sensibility with both the lyrics, and the way they are phrased – which makes even some of the demo tracks come across beautifully. 2LP set features 24 tracks in all – including "How Do I Feel Today (Decca acetate)", "Beeside (Deram single)", "Bodmin Blow", "Tanya", "My Prayer", "let The Wind Blow", "Stickleback", "Busy Bee", "Do What You Must", "Mrs Daisy (Polydor version)", "Blue Pants", "Witchcraft", "Vacuum Cleaner (Deram single)", "Magic Horsemen", and "Life Goes By". A really fantastic live performance by the Mike Westbrook Concert Band – recorded right around the same time as his seminal albums for Deram – and with an equally amazing sound! The "old place" here is Ronnie Scott's old club – which was still leased for a few months as the new one was being opened in 1968, which gave Westbrook and other young musicians the chance to try out some of the incredible new ideas that would really set the British jazz scene apart in the late 60s! There's a pivotal feel to the record that's wonderful – really informing the explosion of sounds on Westbrook's late 60s albums, as he uses both older jazz compositions and his own great work – to make a pastiche of modes and modern moments that really blows us away – served up by a lineup that includes Mike Osborne and John Surman on saxes, Malcolm Griffiths and Paul Rutherford on trombones, Dave Holdsworth on piano, Harry Miller on bass, and Alan Jackson on drums – with Westbrook leading the group on piano. A landmark session that gathered together just about every hip British jazz and jazz/rock musician of the time – and brought them together into one super-cool orchestra of sound! Robert Fripp produced the record, and Keith Tippett is the overall music director – but the album's got a feel that's much more in the avant side of the UK jazz spectrum – particularly the trippier side of the Deram/Decca label of the late 60s – like work by Mike Westbrook or Mike Gibbs! The lineup is huge – with Elton Dean and Dudu Pukwana on alto sax, Alan Skidmore and Gary Windo on tenor, Ian Carr and Mongesi Fesa on trumpets, Mark Charig on cornet, Nick Evans and Paul Rutherford on trombone, Keith Tippett on piano, Brian Godding on guitar, Robert Wyatt and John Marshall on drums, and Maggie Nicholls, Julie Tippett, Mike Patto, and Zoot Money on vocals – plus lots of strings as well! Spiralling, soaring work from the Alan Skidmore Quintet – a group led by one of the greatest British tenor talents at the end of the 60s! Skidmore's name turns up often in some of the larger ensemble sessions from the period, but this album's one of his few smaller group outings – and it's a real treasure that we'd rank with the most free-thinking jazz on Deram as the time. Skidmore's joined in the group by an all-star lineup that includes Kenny Wheeler on flugelhorn, John Taylor on piano, Harry Miller on bass, and Tony Oxley on drums – and all players are working here in a cohesive, vibrant style that's quite different than some of the freer, more "out" work of later years. There's a real love of color and tone on the session – and the tunes unfold with a soaring quality that's really tremendous – one that's rarely too free, and which explores the shades and hues that were showing up in some of the best British jazz of the time. For one point of reference, we might compare the record to the depth of the best Michael Garrick sessions of the late 60s – but there's also a bit more straightforward quality here that we really love. The Holiday vocal tracks are the main draw – as you'd expect – and titles include 1939 recordings of "Fine & Mellow" and "Strange Fruit", 1959 recordings of "Just One More Chance" and "I'll Never Smile Again", 1949 recordings of "I Loves You Porgy" and "My Man", and other Verve recordings of "Now Or Never", "God Bless The Child", "Blues Are Brewin", and "Don't Explain". The set also features two tracks by the Sonhouse combo – "Funeral In New Orleans" and "Hoppin Around" – by a lineup that includes Jo Hermans on trumpet, Jel Jongen on trombone, David Thomaere on piano, Wierse Meys on tenor and clarinet, and Mimi Verderame on drums.
