Der PlanDie Peitsche Des Lebens ... CD
Ata Tak/Bureau B (Germany), 1991. New Copy ... $16.99
The last album in the cool classic run of German gems from Der Plan – a group that few folks paid attention to at the time, but who really gave the world some wonderful electronic music in the post-punk years! These guys really distill all the best sides of the German electronic experiments of the 70s – serving things up in shorter tunes that are filled with unusual twists and turns, and which also have plenty of offbeat vocals and a nice sense of humor too – almost like little audio cartoons, with a quality that's far more long-lasting than some of their contemporaries! Despite the 1991 date of the record, the style here is every bit as great as the group's earliest music – and like most of their music, there's hardly any connection to a real epoch in sound – as the whole thing's so darn unique. Titles include "El Cigarro", "Kleiner Junge", "Wir Babies", "Vive Le Vie", "Alter Mann", "Es Werde Licht", and "Spiel 77". CD

Der PlanEs Ist Eine Fremde Und Seltsame Welt ... CD
Ata Tak/Bureau B (Germany), 1987. New Copy ... $16.99
The title translates to "it's a strange and peculiar world" – and there's maybe no better introduction to the mad electronic music of this wonderful German trio from the 80s! Der Plan were part of that special small slice of the German new wave – groups who didn't rely on darkness or angst to get their message across – but instead mixed together whimsical elements with musical experimentation – often in ways that were years ahead of their time! Imagine Kraftwerk scoring the music for cartoons, and you'd get part of the idea here – but that's hardly the start of the sonic delights within – as the album features short tracks in many different varieties – exploding with innovation at each twist and turn. Titles include "1 Mann 1 Ball", "Bleib Gold", "Kennen Sie Koln", "Frisch Verliebt", "Komm Zurick", "Get Out", and "Ich Hab Den Jordan Gesehn". CD

JM PaganKiu I Els Seus Amics ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A strange spacey soundtrack from mid 80s Spain – one composed for a daytime TV show, but with a weird electronic vibe that must have shocked the kids who were watching at the time! The music has some echoes of the cooler side of the German new wave – not the darkness of the cold wave side, but maybe the mix of playfulness and experimentation you'd hear from Pyrolator or Der Plan – both of whom would be a good comparison the spirit of the songs on this set! Most tunes are instrumental, but still pretty darn catchy – and when there's vocals, they're usually processed in the best 80s electro way. Titles include "Una Dia Especial", "Tema De Kiu", "El Mon De Kiu", "Un Dia Boig", "Beat De Beth", "Ball De Beth", "Quan Jo Sigui Una Estrella", and "Tema De La Lluno". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousNoise Reduction System – Formative European Electronica 1974 to 1984 (4CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. Used 4 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible collection of electronic sounds that went on to inform generations of rock, pop, and dance music in years to come – but all featured here with much more interesting examples from the European roots of the genre! There's a wonderful criss-crossing of sources going on here – some academic experimenters from electronic labs, some prog musicians getting a bit more analog, some early digital keyboard wizards, and some downright punky folks – using electronics instead of guitars! The blend is wonderful, and very ear-opening – even more amazing than the partner set in this series, Close To The Noise Floor, which focused on the UK. The music here includes early work by artists you might not expect in such company, alongside others who flourished briefly at the time, gave us some great sounds – then quickly disappeared. Fortunately, the big book of notes tells all the details of the groups and their music – making the whole thing as historically informative as it is entertaining. Titles include "Ich Will" by DAF, "Ny Ny" by Truus De Groot, "Caramel" by Cluster, "Godot Was Here" by Human Flesh, "Soviet Invasion" by Doxa Sinistra, "Last Lift" by Not Only Bones, "Geld" by Malaria, "Son" by Minny Pops, "What's Dat" by Der Plan, "Industrial Tape Track 3 (excerpt)" by Maurizio Bianchi, "Sexual Discipline" by Die Form, "Flanco Dama" by Diseno Corbusier, "Troglodyten" by Asmus Tietchens, "Hymne Au Ver" by Bene Gesserit, "Secret Affair No 2" by Borghesia, "Glue Head" by Yello, "Party Talk" by Andre De Koning, "Shai Hulud" by Bernard Szajner, and "TAnze & Singen" by DDAA. 61 tracks in all! ✨✧ VariousMusik Music Musique – 1980 The Dawn Of Synth Pop (3CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), 1980. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A great little set that brings together the big bang of electro pop that hit the UK scene at the start of the 80s – work from that moment when previous, more experimental strands of music from the initial post-punk years started cleaning things up, going for hooks, and making some pretty darn catchy music in the process! Yet the work here is also maybe still far from some of the overplayed big hits of a few years later – that key moment when early experimenters were crafting some great tunes, but still not sounding too commercial – and sometimes enticing other artists who didn't always record in this mode to join in on the fun! And if you think you know all the sounds from this time, this box set might give you a big surprise – as there's plenty of work here that we didn't expect – not just more obscure tunes by bigger names, but also some obscure artists who fit right into the groove – all given plenty of coverage in the large booklet of notes. 3CD set features 58 tracks in all - with work by The Passage, Berlin Blondes, Buggles, M, Silicon Teens, Rockets, John Foxx, Science, Fad Gadget, Zeus, OMD, Pauline Murray & The Invisible Girls, Dark Day, Der Plan, Kevin Harrison, Japan, Dalek I, Taxi Girl, Systems, Karel Fialka, Nini Raviolette, The Korgis, Alex Fergusson, The Metronomes, Lori & The Chameleons, and others. Astral TravelIf You Say You Are From This Planet, Why Do You Treat It Like You Do? ... LP
Hyperjazz (Italy), 2020. New Copy ... $29.99
A record that really carries its message in its title – a set of spiritual ruminations on the nature of existence – inspired by the writings of Sun Ra, and carried off with vocals by Dwight Trible – who joins this Italian group for the recording! Each song is inspired by a different poem from Ra's This Planet Is Doomed – and the music is freely improvised, but in a relatively spiritual way – with leader Tommaso Cappellato on drums, with Fabrizio Puglisi on piano and keyboards, Piero Bittolo Bon on reeds and electronics, and Marco Privato on bass. The set may be one of the most avant albums that Trible ever recorded – and his vocals have the strong resonance of his straighter recordings, but a bit more bite, and a really mighty reach – on titles that include "Tomorrow's Destiny", "Infinity", "Science Has Changed", "The End", "Time", and "You Are From This Planet". Dave DeRoseAgile Experiments Vol 1 ... LP
Dave De Rose Music (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $11.99
Really compelling work from the farther reaches of the UK jazz scene – a series of "agile experiments" from drummer Dave DeRose – who works here with other musicians from the scene in a series of unbridled improvisations! The work was created with two guiding principles – the musicians could not discuss or plan their performance together in advance, and they would also play for a full hour, with no breaks at all! The idea grew out of a series of live performances, but then was captured by Dave in the studio – with results that are as varied as the musicians involved. Some selections are very unusual and almost abstract, others have a more familiar free jazz mode – and the ability of DeRose to shift in these spaces is one of the highlights of the set. The first volume includes performances with John Edwards on bass and Dan Nicholls on electronics; Rory Simmons on trumpet and electronics and George Crowley on saxes and effects; Dan Nicholls on electronics and Karl Vanden Bossche on percussion; Tom Challenger on saxes and Colin Somervell on bass; Sam Crowe on Rhodes and effects and Level Nevill Malcolm on bass; and Dario Rossetti Bonell on guitar and effects. Ebony Rhythm BandSoul Heart Transplant – The Lamp Sessions ... CD
Now Again/Stones Throw, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
Heavy funk from the Indy scene of the late 60s – the lost album by one of the funkiest combos in the Midwest! Ebony Rhythm Band have an incredible sound that seems to take the heavy bottom of New Orleans Funk and merge it with the trippier elements of Detroit psychedelic soul – no surprise, considering they hailed from Indianapolis, a point about halfway between the two cities! The tracks on the set have a really great tripped-out groove – using lots of guitar and organ over heavy rhythms, in a style that's a bit like the Meters at times – but a lot freer flowing. The album features 2 tracks that formed the basis of one of the group's singles – plus a lot more that were never issued at the time, including a few by other incarnations of the combo! Titles include "Soul Heart Transplant", "Ode To Billie Joe", "Light My Fire", "Vanilla Fudge", "Get Yourself Together", "Drugs Ain't Cool", "Fool Am I", and "It's Too Late For Love". CD contains the bonus alternate version of "Light My Fire". CD

Four TopsNature Planned It ... CD
Motown/Elemental (France), 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... $14.99
Why did Motown ever let the Four Tops get away? This album was their last for the label – and it's an excellent one, filled with soul, sweetness, and some of the best arrangements the group had in their later years! The soul component is super-high – with tight group instrumentation that reminds us of the best Philly backing combos of the same time, but leaner too – as Dennis Coffey and Wah Wah Ragin are on guitars, Jack Ashford handles percussion, and Leonard Caston adds some nice funky keyboards. The real talent, though, is the group – and Levi Stubbs is in fine fine form on cuts like "She's An Understanding Woman", "I Am Your Man", "If You Let Me", "Nature Planned It", "Walk With Me, Talk With Me Darling", and "Happy (Is A Bumpy Road)". Even includes a great version of Todd Rundgren's wonderful track "We Gotta Get You A Woman"! CD

Patrick GleesonBeyond The Sun – An Electronic Portrait Of Holst's The Planets ... LP
Mercury, 1976. Near Mint- ... $5.99
One of the most ambitious records ever made by electronic wizard Patrick Gleeson – a huge talent on the moog and Arp, whose work was featured on key 70s jazz albums by Charles Earland, Joe Henderson, Bennie Maupin, and Herbie Hancock – and that's saying a lot, given that Herbie already played plenty of keyboards himself! This set's a reworking of "The Planets" – the symphonic suite by the composer Gustav Holtz – whose spacey structures are perfect for Pat's other-worldly work on the keys. Trombonist Julian Priester plays on the record – adding a few analog moments next to Pat's work on the EMU Polyphonic Synthesizer – and titles include "Saturn The Bringer Of Old Age", "Neptune The Mystic", "Uranus, The Magician", "Mars The Bringer Of War", and "Mercury The Winged Messenger". Jefferson AirplaneLong John Silver/Thirty Seconds Over Winterland ... CD
Grunt/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of late albums from Jefferson Airplane – issued here in a single set, with new remastering too! First up is Long John Silver – a really fantastic final studio album from Jefferson Airplane – a set that's definitely different than their early work, and which shows the new directions that members would soon take on their own – but done with a vibe that's also a fantastic evolution of the core group's famous sound! The guitar work is even more complex than before – Jorma Kaukonen really blowing us away with his skills, but never in a show-offy way, as the whole thing is wrapped around these honest core rhythms that are almost a rootsier take on psyche elements – with Grace Slick's lead vocals almost coming off with a Sandy Denny quality at times. Titles include "Long John Silver", "Aerie (Gang Of Eagles)", "Twilight Double Leader", "Milk Train", "The Son Of Jesus", "Easter", "Trial By Fire", and "East Starch Mom". Thirty Seconds Over Winterland is a late live album from Jefferson Airplane – who were at the end of their journey, but whatever their personal differences may have been at the time, they still put on a helluva great rock and roll show! Thirty Seconds Over Winterland was recorded at that legendary San Francisco venue, and at Chicago's Auditorium Theatre, with the post-Marty Balin line-up of Grace Slick, Paul Kanter, Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukomen – plus violinist Papa John Creach, drummer John Barbata and vocalist David Freiberg from Quicksilver Messenger Service. Titles include "Have You Seen The Saucers", "Feel So Good", "Crown Of Creation", "When The Earth Moves Again", "Milk Train", "Trial By Fire" and "Twilight Double Leader". CD

✨✧ Valerie JuneOrder Of Time ... CD
Concord, 2017. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Valerie June's been bubbling under for almost a decade – recording work with other artists, doing a variety of projects, and finally getting her chance to shine in the spotlight with her previous debut – yet it may well be this well-crafted second album that finally puts the singer over the top! Valerie's completely her own woman here – not beholden to any sort of easy tags or cliches – including the "rootsy soul" or "folksy diva" tags that we heard batted around before – and instead, almost inventing her own genre for the record – which has a vibe that makes us guess that it's going to be the start of a huge legacy of fame to come for June. Her voice is timeless, the instrumentation is nicely understated, and the production is very easygoing – yet the whole thing comes across with a crispily compelling sound that could appeal to both hipsters and their more mainstream friends. That might sound like a dig, but it's not – just our way of illustrating the soon-to-be universal appeal of the singer! Titles include "The Front Door", "Astral Plane", "Long Lonely Road", "Just IN Time", "Slip Slide On By", "Two Hearts", and "Got Soul". CD

Just when you thought Philadelphia had shown us all its great new soul singers, another fantastic act pops into the limelight! Kindred The Family Soul are a treasure, and the kind of group we can warm to on first listen! This debut record for Hidden Beach is a rich blend of male and female vocals, served up with the kind of warm production, nice keyboards, and sensitive arrangements that made Jill Scott's first album so great. The pair really have an incredibly solid approach – working in a warm and mellow soul style that stretches back to Donny Hathaway, but which bristles with the best energy of the current scene. Titles include "Far Away", "Weather The Storm", "Family Song", "We", "What Happens Now", "Meant To Be", "Contentment", and "Spread The Word". And don't mind us – we're hopping the next plane to Philly! CD

Pharoah SandersJewels Of Thought ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $18.99
A wonderful reunion of Pharoah Sanders and vocalist Leon Thomas – and a set that captures a lot of the same energy as the pair's previous record – Karma! Thomas' vocals are in wonderful form for the set – stretching out soulfully on the extended classic "Hum-Allah-Hum-Allah-Hum-Allah" – a title that has much of the same grace and power as "The Creator Has A Master Plan. The rest of the players on the date include Lonnie Liston Smith on piano, Richard Davis and Cecil McBee on basses, and Idris Muhammad and Roy Haynes on drums – and unusually enough, each of the double bassists and drummers gets their own channel of sound to work with! The other long track on the album is the extended "Sun In Aquarius" – which is a bit more outside, but still pretty great! CD

Transversales Disques/P-Vine (Japan), 1975. New Copy ... About June 16, 2021
A gem of a record from the legendary Pharoah Sanders – a set that's recorded right at the tail end of his famous years for Impulse Records, and which has all the best qualities of his last few records for that label! The vibe here is a lot like Elevation or Love Is In Us All – a return to warmer, more spiritual modes, with less of the completely outside qualities of Sanders' early 70s material – a great flow, lots of modal energy in the rhythms, and that mix of soul and freedom that reminds us again that Pharoah is one of the founders of the spiritual jazz style! The group features Danny Mixon on piano and organ, Calvin Hill on bass, and Greg Bandy on drums – and the music was all recorded by ORTF Radio, with fantastic fidelity – and this reissue is completely legit, and remastered from the original tapes. Titles include "Love Is Here", "Farrell Tune", "Love is Everywhere", "The Creator Has A Master Plan", and "I Want To Talk About You". CD

Blue Chopsticks, 2021. New Copy 2LP ... $29.99
A fantastic collaboration between three of the most creative improvisers on the planet – an extended live set that's even better than the studio outing the group gave us on their debut! The lineup here features David Grubbs on guitar and voice, Rob Mazurek on piccolo trumpet and electronics, and Mats Gustafsson on flute, baritone sax, and fluteophone – plus some live electronics as well! The players clearly have tremendous respect and sympathy for each other – and rather than an all-star outing in which everyone's trying to wrestle to the top, the music moves very organically between structure and improvisation – really thoughtful creation throughout, at a level that makes the whole thing even greater than the sum of its three mighty parts. Titles include "Gethsemani Night", "Not At My Funeral", "Self Portrait As Interference Pattern", "A Thin Eternity", "Planks", "Instant Opaque Evening", and "Cooler Side Of The Pillow". Verve, 1966. Very Good ... $9.99
An album that not only broke the bossa big in the US – but a set that also really helped transform the sound of the organ in jazz! Not only is the record a key meeting of bossa rhythms and jazz organ – transplanted hugely to the US after a big initial Wanderley run in 60s Brazil – but the set also features some of the cleanest organ lines to ever hit these shores – a big difference from the heavier flutter that some of the US organists were using a few years before, and a sharp shift towards cleaner keyboard sounds for the rest of the decade. Instrumentation's nice and spare – mostly bass and percussion, plus a bi tof flute and guitar – and titles include the massive hit "Summer Samba", plus "Rain", "Beach Samba", "Song Of The Jet", "Cried, Cried", and "Girl From Ipanema". BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $29.99 32.99
An ear-opening set of Japanese jazz from a time when that nation's scene was really taking off – a period in the 70s when all sorts of new artists and new ideas were really flying around – and leaving behind a huge recorded legacy that's been mostly out of reach for us in the west! Japan always had a few big names in jazz that got exported overseas, but the work here is from some of the smaller names who were still turning out incredible music – much of it only issued on vinyl, and not reissued later – brought together here with copious notes that really tell you a heck of a lot about the music! There's definitely a post-Coltrane vibe going on – lots of spiritual elements, mixed with both moments that are funkier and more soulful, and others that are a bit more freewheeling – often stretched out on extended tracks that really let the artists take off and find their space. Titles include "Black Nile" by Hideyasu Terakawa, "Kirisame" by Ryusei Quartet, "Honey Sanba" by Katsuyuki Itakura, "Cumulonimbus" by Shigeharu Mukai, "Song Of Island" by Yasuhiro Kohno Trio + One, "Phoebus" by Hiroshi Murakami & Dancing Sphinx, "Morning Tiede" by Kohsuke Mine, "Kemo Sabe" by Masao Nakajima, "Song For Hope" by Aki Takase, "Planets" by Masaru Imada Trio + 1, "1/4 Samba" by Tatsuya Nakamura, "Acoustic Chicken" by Koichi Matsukaze, and "Cumorah" by Eiji Nakayama. A great assortment of funky jazzy cuts from recent years – a stunning package that shows just how much the love of jazz on the dancefloor has exploded in the contemporary underground – in ways that are so different than the modes of decades back! Yes, there was a time when "jazz" on a dance track meant a lame sax solo or stolen sample from the 70s – but things really evolved past that, to a whole generation of artists who've really re-embraced live instrumentation mixed with clubbier rhythms – pushing things way way past the more familiar jazz funk sounds of back in the day! In other words, these cuts are new, but also resonate with some vintage elements – very fresh, and exploding with new ideas and very groovy sounds – titles that include "Finding Common Ground" by Mario Cruz, "Catfish Sandwich" by Brian Charette, "Yggdrasil" by PJS, "Theme From Quartet" by Fox Capture Plan, "Another Brick In The Wall" by Wildcard, "Falling In Love With Love" by Niki Haris, "Lisbon" by Markpaulnorton, "Gotta Be Free" by Nina Mya, "K's Dream" by Yusuke Shima, "San Gogo Fu" by Caroxfa, "Fly" by Nicole Banks, and "Jungle" by Shahin Novrasli. VariousSpiritual Jazz Vol 13 – Now Part 1 – Modern Sounds For The 21st Century ... CD
Jazzman (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99
A tremendous entry in this wonderful series – a set that proudly proclaims its contents with the "NOW" on the cover! Back when the Spiritual Jazz series first started on the Jazzman label, the music was mostly relegated to material of the John Coltrane generation and the generation that followed – but in the past decade or so, there's been a huge explosion in new artists that explore the deeper, more righteous currents of jazz – music that's pulled in from the farther reaches of free improvisation, to righteous, message-oriented styles that often mix modal rhythms with more exploratory solo passages. Yet this new generation is hardly slavish to the sounds of Impulse Records – as they've really moved beyond, and have used a globe's worth of influences and new 21st Century concepts to bring fresh spirit to the music – opening things up in ways that have made this new movement one of our greatest sources of inspiration in recent years. This double-length entry is a fantastic overview of the sounds that are currently reshaping the planet – and titles on volume 1 include "Lizard Waltz" by Benjamin Herman "Wisdom Of Elders" by Shabaka & The Ancestors, "Soul" by Cat Toren's Human Kind, "Nimeton" by Oiro Pena, "Echoes Of Ancient Sahara" by Darryl Yokley's Sound Reformation, "Winter" by Black Flower, "Shamal Wind" by Chip Wickham, "An Angel Fell" by Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids, "Sounds Like Now" by Damon Locks, "Gnawa" by Makaya McCraven, and "The Black Ark" by Nat Birchall. ✨✧ Cannonball AdderleyCannonball Adderley Sextet In New York ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rock-solid live material from the classic Cannonball Adderley Sextet – a combo who could usually groove even better on a concert date then they could in the studio! The album's one of a number of key live sides from Cannon in the 60s – and although it pre-dates his work on Capitol, it's done in a similar spacious mode – with plenty of longish tracks that build upon the core groove set down by Joe Zawinul's piano, Sam Jones' bass, and Louis Hayes' drums – a perfect backdrop for the creative and complicated solos of Cannon on alto, Nat Adderley on cornet, and Yusef Lateef on tenor, flute, and oboe! The date was recorded live at the Village Vanguard in 1962 – and titles include "Gemini", "Planet Earth", "Dizzy's Business", "Syn-anthesia", "Scotch & Water", and "Cannon's Theme". CD

✨✧ Fred Anderson & Hamid DrakeFrom The River To The Ocean ... CD
Thrill Jockey, 2007. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fresh album from one of the stronger partnerships in avant garde jazz – sax titan Fred Anderson and drummer/percussionist Hamid Drake – joined by some of the finest Chicago based players for set of slowbuilding, generously spacious material that might be even better their previous album for Thrill Jockey! Anderson's sax and Drake's drumming are as intuitive to each other as ever, and some bits of the record have a dual bass sound that really pulls us in! Josh Abrams and Harrison Bankhead bring the bass, with a great cello part by Bankhead on one track, and Jeff Parker plays some nice guitar. A masterful record with more of an ensemble approach than its predecessor! 5 long (or longish), languorously gripping tracks: "Planet E", "Strut Time", "For Brother Thompson", "From The River To The Ocean" and "Sakti/Shiva". ✨✧ Charles EarlandLeaving This Planet ... CD
Prestige, 1974. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever from organist Charles Earland – a double-length set that's filled with spiritual, soaring grooves! The style here is a perfect blend of the rougher soul jazz of Earland's roots with some of the spacier styles of his later recordings – served up in a sound that's majestic and powerful, almost with an indie soul jazz sort of vibe overall! There's an immediate urgency to most numbers that's totally undeniable – a lesson learned from the electric experiments of Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis, but fused down into a core essence – then let loose on a soaring journey to the heavens. Earland plays Hammond, moog, clavinet, and Arp on the set – and other players include Joe Henderson on tenor, Dave Hubbard on alto and soprano sax, Eddie Henderson and Freddie Hubbard on trumpets, Marc Elf on guitar, Harvey Mason on drums, and the incredible Patrick Gleeson on synthesizers – bringing in a spacey edge to the record that's really amazing! Rudy Copeland sings a wonderful vocal on the title cut, "Leaving This Planet" – and all other instrumental cuts include "Red Clay", "Warp Factor 9", "Tyner", "Van Jay", "Never Ending Melody", "Mason's Galaxy", and "Asteroid". Astral Spirits, 2021. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first album as a leader from Rob Frye – and a set that's likely to be the start of a big creative wave to come! Rob serves up a very unusual instrumental blend here – one that's heavy on percussion and keyboards, but used in a very organic setting – not one that's moody or atmospheric, but which has sort of a rising power that really gets at the planetary vision of Frye's music! Rob himself plays woodwinds and electronics – and other musicians include Quin Kirchner and Tommaso Moretti on drums, Cooper Crain and Dan Quinlivan on electronics, Edbrass Brasil on woodwinds, and Ben Lamar Gay on cornet! The sound is wonderful – very hard to describe in words – and titles include "Intercosmos", "Jupiter Control", "Lightship Sgr A Sgr", "Goldilocks", and "Sunrise On Pruhina". LP, Vinyl record album

Solar, 1984. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little record that has Midnight Star taking all the outer space funk of the 70s P-Funk generation – and fusing it into a much leaner groove for the 80s! There's plenty of planetary sounds going on here – as the electro beats and keyboards certainly sound futuristic, and all the vocoder vocals come off with a nicely alien vibe – yet all while grooving together perfectly, in that way that made Midnight Star one of the few 80s groups who could take the beats from the streets and make them work so wonderfully in the mainstream! Titles include the classic "Operator", plus "Let's Celebrate", "Curious", "Scientific Love", "Planetary Invasion", and "Body Snatchers". CD

✨✧ William ParkerI Plan To Stay A Believer – The Inside Songs Of Curtis Mayfield (with bonus download) ... LP
Aum Fidelity, 2010. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really unusual album from bassist William Parker – an artist whose musical world is usually quite far from the 70s soul of Curtis Mayfield – even though both Mayfield and Parker are pretty darn righteous individuals! Yet here, Curtis and William come together in a stunning way – as Parker reworks classic Mayfield songs, and transforms them into fantastic vehicles for spiritual jazz expression! The group has a warmly collaborative vibe, and energy that feels like some lost indie jazz project from the 70s – all held together by Parker's bold acoustic bass and masterful leadership – in a lineup that includes vocals from Leena Conquest, piano from Dave Burrell, saxes and flute from Sabir Mateen, tenor and soprano from Darryl Foster, trumpet from Lewis Barnes, drums from Hamid Drake, and poetry and voice from Amari Baraka. With a lineup like that, you can already guess the vibe – and we can promise that the whole is even better than you might have hoped! Titles include "I Plan To Stay A Believer", "This Is My Country", "People Get Ready/The Inside Song", "Ya He Hey Ya", "New World Order", and a great 17 minute take on "We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue". Amazing music from the golden years of Ethiopian Music – a set of tracks that will take you beyond the music of Mulatu, into a wealth of other talents from the scene at the same time! The sound here is incredible – a mix of heavy funk, spacey jazz, and other exotic touches all coming together – a unique sort of sound that's beyond referent, and which is easily some of the freshest music on the planet back in the 70s! The vinyl-only collection pulls tracks from different volumes of the Ethiopiques CD titles – and offers up a strong focus on the funkiest and grooviest numbers from that legendary series. Tracks include "Muziqawi Silt" by Wallias Band, "Hasabe" by Ayalew Mesfin, "Antchin Yagegnulet" by Tamrat Ferendji, "Amlak Abet Abet" by Asselfetch Ashine & Getenesh Kebret, "Temeles" by Alemayehu Eshete & Hirut Bequele, and "Aynotchesh Yerefu" by Samuel Belay. ✨✧ Pharoah SandersLive At Antibes Jazz Festival In Juan-Les-Pins 1968 ... LP
Alternative Fox (UK), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very early live set by Pharoah Sanders – very much in the best modes of his late 60s albums on Impulse Records, and a great addition to that era of recordings from the tenor genius! The performance was recorded by French Radio, and has great sound quality – really capturing the soulful shadings of the group, which is a quartet with a young Lonnie Liston Smith on piano, Sirone on bass, and Majeed Shabazz on drums. There's no other instrumentation at all, but the interplay between Sanders and Smith is wonderful – as full of tonal color as their studio recordings – and Sirone is really fantastic too. The performance is presented as one long continuous track – beginning with a long improvisation, then moving through "Venus" and "The Creator Has A Master Plan" – all as spiritual as you'd expect! ✨✧ Kay-GeesKeep On Bumpin' & Masterplan ... LP
Gang, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The Kay-Gees' funkiest record ever – a set that's harder and sharper than anything else they'd ever record in years to come! Grabbing this one up is like finding a lost Kool & The Gang album from the early years – which is no surprise, since Ronald Bell of the group produced, and wrote a lot of the songs with the group – maybe acting as their mentor, and definitely giving the young group a great showcase for their boundless energy, and tight skills in the groove department! The band are incredibly tight – with lots of hard drums, choppy guitar, and the rolling party feel that made Kool & The Gang so great during their best years – captured here with a similarly raw production style. There's some great horns that blast in and out, sounding very off-beat at the best moments – like the classic "Who's the Man With the Master Plan", sampled by YZ many years ago – or other funky cuts like "Ain't No Time", "Get Down", and "You've Got to Keep on Bumpin". ✨✧ Pharoah SandersIzipho Zam (My Gifts) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Strata East/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A rare non-Impulse Records album from the early days of Pharoah Sanders – but a set that ranks right up there with his classics for that legendary label! The album's one of the classics in Strata East's Dolphy Series – and it's a uniquely collaborative session from 1969, one that has Sanders working with a largeish group that includes Sonny Fortune on alto sax, Sonny Sharrock on guitar, Lonnie Liston Smith on piano, Leon Thomas on vocals, and Cecil McBee on bass – all coming together with a freely exploratory sort of energy, one that's a bit like some of Archie Shepp's most righteous sides from the same time. Sanders' tenor still dominates most numbers, but not as much as on some of the Impulse sides – and there's a nicely relaxed and personal feel to the whole album. The album features 3 long tracks – "Prince Of Peace", which has Leon Thomas doing his "Creator Has A Master Plan" thing, and the cuts "Balance" and "Izipho Zam", the latter of which jams for a full 28 minutes! A great one from The Byrds – who deliver an iconic mix of breezy country rock and folk harmonies, over songs that range from laidback to soaring! The Byrds seemed to always be in a state of flux, line-up wise, and that actually seems to bring out a pretty great mix of styles on their best albums. We'd put this one in that category, with titles that includes "Ballad Of Easy Rider", the country funk-flavored "Fido", the effectively tradtional "Jack Tarr The Sailor", "Oil In My Lamp", "Tulsa County", "Jesus Is Just Alright", "It's All Over Now, "Baby Blue", "There Must Be Someone (I Can Turn To)", "Gunga Din", "Deportee (Plane Wreck At Los Gatos)" and "Armstrong, Aldrin And Collins". The group features players from the Chicago scene that are truly at the forefront of an exciting wave of modern jazz in the city, and anywhere else on the planet – coronet player Josh Berman, Aram Shelton on alto sax and clarinet, Frank Rosaly on drums, and Jason Roebke on bass – rolling along with sound that combines an avant energy with classic dexterity. The interplay is intuitive and dynamic, balancing tense and playful moments with precision. Wonderful! One of the last albums that Albert Ayler ever recorded before his strange and mysterious early death – and one of his most memorable records as well! The record shows Ayler at the crossroads, filled with emotion and meaning, struggling to convey his message to a lager audience. At times, he takes a strange soul/jazz format to do so, and has tracks featuring backing by "the Soul Singers" – at others, he plays solo, with some of the most plaintive tones he ever laid down on wax! The record features an incredibly haunting "Message From Albert", plus the tracks "New Generation", "Sun Watcher", "New Ghosts", and "Free At Last". Completely fascinating, and a record that really makes you wonder what would have happened had he not left the planet so early! LP, Vinyl record album

Warner/Rhino, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A hell of a debut from The B-52s – and a record that's become surprisingly timeless over the years, despite a retro-styled approach by the group! These guys aren't the silly group of later years here – and instead, they've got this moody darkness that's wonderful – a re-envisioned postwar America, one in which the neuroses are all on the outside – served up with instrumentation that's stark, but incredibly tight – snapping drums, riffing guitar, and these great organ lines that sound beautiful next to the vocals of Fred and the girls. The set gave the group their perennial hit "Rock Lobster" – but taken as a whole, it's an incredibly different landscape – as you'll discover on tracks that include "Planet Claire", "52 Girls", "Dance This Mess Around", "Lava", "There's A Moon In The Sky (Called The Moon)", "Hero Worship", "6060-842" and "Downtown". Robbie BashoBashovia (Falconer's Arm Vols 1 & 2/Song Of The Stallion) ... CD
Takoma, 1967/1968. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
A great collection of tracks from three important early albums from Robbie Basho – all issued on Takoma Records, under the guidance of John Fahey – an early champion of Basho, who was an artist who was every bit a revolutionary acoustic player as his mentor! Basho a guitarist who's often known as a contemporary of John Fahey – but one that we might well put in an entirely different class altogether! The music here is mostly solo guitar – on 12-string and standard acoustic guitar – and Basho has this sublime way of spinning out these long, almost modal lines – clearly inspired a bit by Indian music, given his comments in the notes – but with a result that's very much his own, and which has this sonic sensibility that's years ahead of his time! If you dig Fahey or Sandy Bull, you'll find plenty to dig here too – but there's also elements of Basho's late 60s performance that wouldn't turn up until decades later in the playing and phrasing of others. There's a bit of vocalization on a few numbers – a strange style that's less singing than channeling the planet – and titles include "The Falconer's Arm", "Lost Lagoon Suite", "Song Of The Snowy Ranges", "Pasha", "The Haji", "Khatum", and "Pavan Hindustan". Roy BuddMan At The Top (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Caldera (Germany), 1973. New Copy ... $26.99
An overlooked score from the great Roy Budd – one that we're not sure ever made it to vinyl back in the day – and which is presented here in a nicely expanded version! The music has that tense quality that made the non-groovy cuts from Budd's Get Carter score so great – and which was followed in some of his other early 70s soundtracks – which, like the music here, really shows a maturation away from the straighter jazz of Roy's roots – but still features the occasional piano solo (including electric) to remind us that he's a performer as much as a composer. There's a darkly moody vibe to many numbers – this current of sadness that's really beautiful, and which flowers often in a subtle way – on titles that include "Change Of Plan", "The Journey Continues", "Opening", "In The Woods", "Peeping Robin", "Mingle With Me", "Swept Up In Memories", "In The Office", and "Bossa Nova". John CarpenterFog (2LP 180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Death Waltz, 1980. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $59.99
Wonderful sounds from the great John Carpenter – one of those records that reminds us that his music is often just as important as the images he puts on the screen! Carpenter's music for The Fog follows nicely in his work for other films – particularly Halloween – in that it's got this slow-building style that often makes great use of keyboards – often used sparely, with a really spooky sort of energy – and even more space, and at slower speed than his other horror soundtracks! The style really fits the "fog" theme of the film! The soundtrack kicks off with the indispensable prologue from the movie – with the old man telling the ghost story with just the sparest of background keyboards – and other titles include "Theme From The Fog", "Rocks At Drakes' Bay", "Tommy Tells Of Ghost Ships", "Flack In The Sanctuary", "Dane", "An Evil Plan", "Morgue", "The Fog Approaches", "Revenge", "The Fog Enters Town" and more. Comet Is ComingAfterlife ... CD
Universal (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $9.99
A brilliant blast from The Comet Is Coming – their second album on Impulse in less than a year – and it's as exciting as anything they've done so far! Their core vibe of mixing spiritual jazz with electronic experimentation is here in full force, but they take it new directions. While the trio carries the influences from 70s spacey fusion influences and modern London jazz on the other, it always feels fully unique and of their own invention. Part of what's so exciting is they can strip things down to minimalist vibe of melodic sax, spare drums and bubbling electronics to far-reaching jazz funk from one track to the next – this is trio with range! Poet Joshua Idehen delivers a righteous vocal on the opener "All That Matters Is The Moments" that sets the stage for the soaring ride that follows, including "The Softness Of The Present", "The Afterlife", "Lifeforce Part I", "Lifeforce Part II" and "The Seven Planetary Heavens". The group have a psychedelic look on the cover, but are more old school rockers with some late 60s twists – some Beatles-esque arrangements on a few tracks, freakier vocals on a few others, and this stunning ability to move between styles while still making the record feel very unified overall. The whole thing's wonderful – filled with catchy tunes and madder moments – titles that include "Delusion", "Come With Me", "Find A Hideaway", "The Endless Struggle", "Please Return", and "Should I". Next is the self-titled Creepy John Thomas album – a stunning set from Aussie singer John Thomas – billed here as Creepy John Thomas, a name that was supposed to invoke older blues roots while also pitching the whole thing to the weirder, wilder, wiggier generation at the end of the 60s! In truth, there's very little blues rock here at the forefront – maybe in part because the album's an early production effort by Conny Plank – who does a great job bringing out all these odd sounds from familiar elements – so that the fuzzy guitar and heavy bass can get weird and moody at times, even when the song structure might be relatively tight. The driving force, though, is Creepy John – the kind of singer who should have been part of some supergroup at the start of the 70s – but who's maybe even better as one of rock's great under-discovered lesser-rans. Titles include "Sun & Woman", "Bring Back The Love", "Ride A Rainbow", "You've Got To Hide", "Gut Runs Great Stone", "Do I Figure In Your Life", "Moon & Eyes Song", and "Trippin Like A Dog & Rockin Like A Bitch". Last up is Brother Bat Bone – a real gem from the overlooked Creepy John Thomas – a record that evokes familiar blues rock styles, but with a much trippier sound overall – as you might guess from the image on the cover! Creepy John plays acoustic and electric guitar – with qualities that are even stronger than his previous records, and which lead to the longs being longer, with some surprisingly great solo parts – which are then topped by those raw, nasty vocals that always made Thomas such a budding talent at the time! There's a complexity here that's really surprisingly – the guitar work alone is wonderful, and all the rest is really just icing on the cake – on titles that include "This Is My Body", "Standin In The Sunshine", "100lb Noomy", "What's The Matter With The Mill", and "Down In The Bottom". ✨✧ Dezron Douglas & Brandee YoungerForce Majeure ... LP
International Anthem, 2020. New Copy ... $20.99 22.99
Dezron Douglas and Brandee Younger are two of our favorite jazz musicians to emerge in the past decade – and this set of duets may well be some of the greatest work that either artist has done on record to date! The setting is unique – material pulled from live stream broadcasts that bassist Douglas and harpist Younger did from their Harlem apartment during the lockdown in Spring of 2020 – and if that makes you think that the material's going to be low-fi or cheap, it's not – as there's a sense of majesty here that's really surprising, given that the album features just two musicians! Dezron's bass has never sounded better – and blended with the harp of Younger, the sound is amazing – as Brandee evokes both Alice Coltrane and Dorothy Ashby on the instrument – but also brings in a spirit that's very much her own. The set features remakes of tracks from both Coltranes, and Pharoah Sanders – plus lots of other surprises and original material too – on titles that include "Gospel Trane", "Force Majeure", "This Woman's Work", "Nothing Stupid", "Sing", "The Creator Has A Master Plan", "Never Can Say Goodbye", "We'll Be Right Back", "You Make Me Feel Brand New", and "Equinox". DynamicsVersion Excursions ... CD
Groove Attack (Germany), 2007. Used ... $11.99
The first full-length set from The Dynamics – a cool little combo who've been getting attention for their funky 45s, most of which are reggae covers of soul, funk, and pop tunes from the 60s and 70s! That same approach is used here to great effect – kind of a rocksteady remake of tunes that sound surprisingly great in this mode – taken to funky, dubby territory in a way that's wonderfully free of any gimmicks or cliches! The quality's so high, we might almost rank this one right up there with similar Studio One cover versions from the late 60s and early 70s – but there's almost a leaner approach too, one that ties the group nicely to their role in the global deep funk underground. Titles include "Miss You", "Rockit", "Land Of 1000 Dances", "7 Nation Army", "The Dynamic Sound", "Girls & Boys", "90% Of Me Is You", "Whole Lotta Love", and "The Creator Has A Master Plan". CD

Four TetNew Energy ... LP
Text, 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $21.99
Some of the lushest, most melodic material from Four Tet yet – straight up beautiful for the most part – and a pretty strong contender for his best to date! He's blending electronics and more natural sounds in ways that aren't out of character given his past work, but the title is wholly appropriate. Up to this point, he's so fully embraced creative evolution, it's gratifying to hear a Four Tet record in which he brings in bits of the styles he's worked on past efforts with a new energy and fresh life. It'll roll from almost beatless mixes of electronic atmosphere and natural sounds on one track, to beats-centric and spacey on the next, but it gels all the way through, all parts of a hypnotic whole. Includes "Alap", "Two Thousand Seventeen", "LA Trance", "Tremper", "Lush", "You Are Loved", "10 Midi", "Daughter", and "Planet". LP, Vinyl record album

The second of 3 great albums by in the short but massively influential career of Galaxie 500 – the members of whom would go on the pretty successful careers in other groups, but it's hard to imagine how those records can be better remembered than gems like On Fire! Dean Wareham had really become a master of hypnotic, just spacey enough guitar sounds by the time this record hit, with Dean & Naomi's plaintive vocals ekeing raw emotions out of the songs like no other group working at the time. Titles include "Blue Thunder", "Tell Me", "Snowstorm", "Strange", "When Will You Come Home", "Decomposing Trees", ""Leave The Planet", "Plastic Bird" and "Isn't It A Pity" – plus the bonus tracks "Victory Garden", "Ceremony" and "Cold Night". Dana GillespieWhat Memories We Make – The Complete Mainman Recordings 1971 to 1974 (Weren't Born A Man/Ain't Gonna Play No Second Fiddle/bonus tracks) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 24.99
A pair of great albums from singer Dana Gillespie – and a huge amount of bonus material too, including some rare promo and demo tracks that have never been available to the public! The set kicks off with the Weren't Born A Man album – a real turning point in the career of Dana Gillespie – a singer who started out as a British folkie in the 60s, but who really transformed through a host of different modes as the 70s moved in – including a key role in the long-running Catch My Soul stage show, and an intimate friendship with David Bowie! Gillespie's not exactly like Bowie, but on the record she does find a very special, intimate space of her own – helped partly by the production and arrangements of Mick Ronson, who also works with some of the Spiders Of Mars in the backing – and also in part by Bowie, who lets Dana sing his great tune "Andy Warhol" here in a version that's maybe even better than his own! Yet Gillespie is definitely at the helm throughout – a superb songwriter, and a great singer too – intimate one minute, bold the next, and quite far from her roots in folk. Titles include "Andy Warhol", "Weren't Born A Man", "Mother Don't Be Frightened", "All Gone", "Eternal Showman", "Dizzy Heights", and "Stardom Road (parts 1 & 2)". Ain't Gonna Play No Second Fiddle is the second album that Dana Gillespie recorded for the Mainman productions label – and one that really has her stepping out and finding a voice that's all her own! Dana's a bit hard to peg stylistically – somewhat rock, but with occasional gentleness that's borrowed from her folk roots – often given a slight glam twist in the production, but not really a glam singer at all – in part because she's often got some deeper currents in her lyrics! Gillespie's got this strength in the lead that should have made her a much bigger star – an ability to step sideways to different modes from track to track, yet make you feel like the whole thing is very much part of her own master plan. Titles include "Get My Rocks Off", "Really Love The Man", "Hold Me Gently", "Pack Your Bags", "Getting Through To Me", and "Wanderlust". 2CD set features a huge amount of interesting material – including 5 tracks from Dana's 1971 promo record that she shared with David Bowie, 5 more demos from October of 1974, after her second album – but never issued – the original demo for "Andy Warhol", an outtake of "Man Size Job", different Mick Ronson arrangements for "Lavender Hill" and "Never Knew", and the Libido single tracks "Hold On To Your Fire" and "Weren't Born A Man". Ralph J GleasonMusic In The Air (hardcover) ... Book
Yale University Press, 2016. New Copy ... $6.99 30.00
Ralph J Gleason might just be one of the coolest cats to ever write about music – a key part of the San Francisco scene during the postwar years – where his talents helped illuminate both the worlds of art and music during the beat generation – then really helped shine a spotlight on all the cultural changes in the city during the 60s – which even led to Gleason's role in the founding of Rolling Stone magazine! Gleason always had a great eye (and ear) for things that were new and special, but never in a way that was slavish to the moment – or to its creator – and the book features an initial section on his writings on jazz and blues – with essays on John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Carmen McRae, BB King, John Handy, Vince Guaraldi & Bola Sete, Cal Tjader, Ben Webster, the San Francisco Jazz scene, and other diverse topics. The second section features Gleason on folk and rock – with bits on Jefferson Airplane, Hank Williams, Lenny Bruce, Odetta, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and others – and the final section features articles on politics and culture – covering topics that include Richard Nixon, radio payola, Law & Order, flower children, and other slices of society, seen from the Gleason viewpoint. Jerry GoldsmithGoldsmith At 20th Vol 2 – The Detective/Flim Flam Man ... CD
La La Land, 1967. New Copy ... $19.99
A pair of overlooked Jerry Goldsmith soundtracks – back to back on a single CD! First up is The Detective – a soundtrack we've been trying to find for years – given the way the music works perfectly in the surprisingly dark film! Goldsmith uses lots of jazzy tones in his scoring – especially trumpet lines – which works wonderfully not just for the urban location of the narrative, but to underscore the really melancholy mood of the whole movie – one of those Bullitt-era cop stories that shows the overwhelming effect of crime upon the outlook of a detective. There's a few weird touches in the mix – some swirling, almost watery moments – and titles include "A New Love", "A Family Affair", "Beach Scene", "Joe", "Night Talk", "The Safe Cracker", and "The Ball Game". The Flim Flam Man was recorded right around the same time, but is quite different – more rural than urban, with American themes that come through in the use of harmonica, woodwinds, and a bit of banjo and guitar – almost a Copland-esque fantasy of the country, but with warmer touches that both belie the comedic nature of the film, and the sensitivity that Goldsmith can bring to any sort of setting. CD features 16 tracks from the film – including "Stolen Property", "A Little Inspiration", "The Flim Flam Man", "A Good Trick/No Rest For The Wicked", "Curley's Plan", and "The Waiting Game". CD

Group Sounds Four & FiveBlack & White Raga (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Jazz In Britain (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $34.99 39.98
A fantastic group from the British scene at mid 60s – music from a time when the UK world of jazz was exploding from the work of artists like Joe Harriott and Tubby Hayes, but also held some other tremendous talents as well! The group here has trumpeter Henry Lowther and tenorist Lyn Dobson at the core – and also features work from Jon Hiseman on drums, plus piano from Ken McCarthy and bass from Ron Rubin on the quintet tracks, and bass from a pre-Cream Jack Bruce on the quartet titles! Tracks are long, open, and filled with the kind of modern expression you might know from the group of Ian Carr and Don Rendell – often modal rhythms giving strong inspiration to freer solo flights – but always with a sense of soul that keeps things from ever sounding too outside to swing. The whole thing's wonderful – a near-lost slice from these crucial years – with titles that include "Snow", "Straight Away", "Celebrity Stomp", "Night & Day", "Red Planet", "Black & White Raga", and "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise". Charlie Haden & The Liberation Music OrchestraNot In Our Name ... CD
Verve, 2005. Used ... $7.99
Our favorite side of Charlie Haden – one that we love from classic recordings on Impulse and ECM – and heard for the first time in years on this new album of gentle protestations against the current state of the US! The album features wonderfully evocative arrangements from Carla Bley – who also plays piano on the sessions, and co-leads the group of younger players with Haden. Tunes are a tapestry of themes designed to offer a different vision of America than the one that's currently getting dragged through the mud in a host of foreign relations disasters and poorly-planned military outings – and Haden and Bley draw from a surprising range of sources for the material in the set. Titles include Haden's "Not In Our Name", Bley's "Blue Anthem", Pat Metheney's "This Is Not America", Ornette Coleman's "Skies Of America", and versions of "Amazing Grace", "Adagio", "Lift Every Voice & Sing", "America The Beautiful", and "Goin Home". Nessa, 1981. New Copy ... $13.99 16.98
A great set from the Chicago scene – one recorded in the early 80s, but put together with a really timeless sound overall! The album's a rediscovery of tenorist Eddie Johnson – a player who'd been away from music for part of the 70s, but who returns beautifully here with a raspy tenor sound that would make labelmate Von Freeman proud. The session is nicely laidback – recorded with trumpet from Paul Serrano and piano from John Young – very relaxed and open, in the sort of mode that really lets a Chicago tenorist take off – which Johnson does, and wonderfully, on tunes that include "Blue Star", "The Choice", "Self Portrait", "Indian Summer", and "Splanky". This 2011 CD edition includes the previously unreleased take on "I'm Old Fashioned". CD

KinksKink Kontroversy ... LP
Reprise, 1966. Very Good ... $29.99
Ray Davies is really coming into his own by the time of this third album by The Kinks – penning almost all the tunes in the set, and really starting to stretch out with some of his more unique ideas! The songs are already beginning to show that picture postcard side of British pop that was the Kinks stock in trade during their best years – and the themes and subjects are really expanded from the group's music of the previous years – already shaking off their American influence, and bringing the world a decidedly English version of rock and roll. Of course, the album does feature the group's wonderful cover of "Milk Cow Blues" – still a nice link to the earlier years – plus the Davies originals "When I See That Girl Of Mine", "I Am Free", "Till The End Of The Day", "The World Keeps Going Round", "I'm On An Island", "It's Too Late", "You Can't Win", "Where Have All The Good Times Gone", "Gotta Get The First Plane Home", and "Ring The Bells". A stone classic from Lord Finesse – a key moment when the DITC underground got a chance to hit the mainstream – and really show the rest of the world why NYC was still the undisputed center of hip hop! Finesse is fantastic, both as a producer and lyricist – and that collaborative vibe of the crates crew is still very much in place here – opening the door to appearances from MC Lyte, Showbiz, Kid Capri, OC, Akinyele, and KRS-One – while also holding onto a solid sense of identity that's made this one a treasure for decades. Riverside/OJC, 1955. Used ... $16.99
A great record from a great guitarist – one of Mundell Lowe's best small group sessions of the 50s, and a record with a wonderful sound overall! One of the key factors in the record's success is the presence of pianist Dick Hyman – who plays organ as well as piano here (plus celeste on one especially nice track) – already using that "groovy" approach to the instrument that we love in his work of the 60s! The clean, lean Hyman tone makes a great match for Lowe's single-note lines on guitar – and although subtle, the record explodes with creative tones that really push this one past the usual "mood" style of other guitar-based jazz albums of the period! Titles include "Bach Revisited", "The Night We Called It A Day", "Will You Still Be Mine", "I Guess I'll Have To Change My Plans", "All Of You", "I'll Never Be The Same", and "Far From Vanilla". CD

A pretty adventurous debut release from this far-reaching Afro Arts collective from Chicago! The record follows in the tradition of some of the important Chicago historical musical collectives from earlier days – but it's got a funk, dub, and black rock twist that updates the sound considerably, weaving together bits of P-Funk, fuzzy guitar, soul jazz, and righteous theatrics that remind us of some of the best early work by Melvin Van Peebles. There's a lot of politics in the group's ensemble vocals – and they're nicely offset by some heavy funky backing that keeps things moving along at the right pace. Johnny MathisHeart Of A Woman/When Will I See You Again/I Only Have Eyes For You/Mathis Is (bonus tracks) ... CD
Columbia/BGO (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
Four great albums from the 70s soul years of Johnny Mathis – all brought together in a single set, and with bonus cuts too! First up is The Heart Of A Woman – on which the voice of Johnny Mathis meets the soulful arrangements of Paul Riser and HB Barnum – all wrapped up with Johnny Bristol production! Johnny's tender voice, the gently sweeping arrangements and soul-rooted production make this one a gem. Titles include "Woman Woman", "Sail On White Moon", "Feel Like Makin Love", "It's Gone", "Memories Don't Leave Like People Do", "Strangers In Dark Corners", and "The Way We Planned It". When Will I See You Again finds Johnny taking on a comparably diverse batch of tunes, from a bright & breezy take on the Gamble & Huff penned title track, to a soaring Roger Nichols/Paul Williams medley, to more intimate strings-backed numbers. Another sweet set from a legendary vocalist, and the titles includes "Mandy", "Nice To Be Around", "You're Right As Rain", "You And Me Against The World", "The Things I Might've Been" and more. I Only Have Eyes For You has Johnny finding a new sort of groove with arranger Gene Page! Page had done funkier work in other settings, but here he mixes up soul and strings in a nice balance of modes for Mathis – blending ballads with a few gentle groovers, the latter of which really have Johnny taking off in great new directions – and finding a way to hold onto the spotlight as the 70s move on! Titles include "Do Me Wrong But Do Me", "The Hungry Years", "I Only Have Eyes For You", "Do You Know Where You're Going To", "Ooh What We Do", "When A Child Is Born", and "Every Time You Touch Me I Get High". Mathis Is has Johnny working with lots of strong Philly soul currents – thanks to arrangements and production from Thom Bell – which makes for a much more soul-based record than usual! Titles include "Hung Up In The Middle Of Love", "I Don't Want To Say No", "Sweet Love Of Mine", "I'll Make You Happy", and "As Long As We're Together". 2CD set features bonus tracks "Fifty Fifty" and "Nothing In This Whole World". The long overdue reissue of this masterpiece from the Brazilian underground of the post-Tropicalia years – one of the first albums by Jorge Mautner, one of Brazil's most unique talents at the time! Although Jorge's main instrument is the violin, he lays low on it for much of the record – singing amidst rootsy rhythms, folkloric instrumentation, and an overall post-sixties sense of righteous empowerment. Tracks are spare and jagged, but never unpleasant – and the record has a brittle quality that makes it as striking today as it must have been back in the early 70s. Tracks include "Anjo Infernal", "Super Mulher", "Olhar Bestial", "Sapo Cururu", and "Estrela Da Noite" – plus the English language tracks "Sheridan Square" and "From Faraway", which have a feel that almost reminds us of work on Caetano Veloso's Transa album. Palm UnitHommage A Jef Gilson ... LP
Super Sonic Jazz (Netherlands), 2018. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $29.99
A beautiful tribute to pianist Jef Gilson – one of the hippest French jazz talents of the 60s and 70s – put together by a combo who take their name from his legendary Palm Records label! The group here are a quartet, and they work with wonderfully moody use of Hohner electric piano by Fred Escoffier, plus a bit of Farfisa and Hammond – of which are used spaciously, over rhythms that often move a lot more fiercely – with a third element created from the soulful tenor work of Lionel Martin – a saxophonist who really gets the spirit of the older Palm Records releases right! Actually, the whole group gets the spirit right – working here with a knowledge of the freer corners of jazz, but never going to that space – and instead hanging back in this spiritual blend of global currents, but all with a sensibility that's really unique. The mixture of tenor and harder electric piano lines is already great enough – but the loose rhythms at the core are what really send things home – on titles that include the Jef Gilson compositions "Mother Africa", "Chant Inca", "Chakan", "Mode De Fa", "Newport Bounce", and "Ouverture Jazz Pour San Remo" – plus a version of "The Creator Has A Master Plan". Rare work from the legendary funky group Placebo – recorded live here in a set that also features contributions from two other great Belgian acts too! Placebo dominate the first half of the record – and turn in a hard-driving performance that's heavy on Fender Rhodes from the legendary Marc Moulin – who has this way of playing that makes his keyboard lines all nice and chunky, and a perfect fit for the funky drums and tight horns on the tunes! The group's a septet, with two trumpets, two saxes, bass, and drums – all kicking out a great groove for the Rhodes, on tunes that include "Showbiz Suite", "Only Nineteen", and "Planes". Next up is strongly soulful work from vibist Fats Sadi – a player you might know from his 60s work on MPS and in the Clarke Boland Big Band – sounding great here in a quartet mode, with piano, bass and drums – ringing out out strongly on tunes that include "Burgos", "Gigi's Pad", and "Gospel Time". Last up is guitarist Rene Thomas – a player whose best-known work is from the 50s Parisian scene. Rene still sounds great here – and actually plays with a harder tone and more freewheeling vibe – in a trio with bass and drums, on the titles "Blue Tempo", "My Wife Maria", and "Chega Da Saudade". Poets Of RhythmWhat Goes 'Round ... CD
Shadow, 1990s. Used ... $8.99
Funky gems by the Poets Of Rhythm – one of the best new funk groups around, right up there with Breakestra, Sugarman Three, and other hard-hitting combos! The tunes on the CD are pulled from earlier recordings that the group made under a number of names – some as The Poets Of Rhythm, others originally issued as fake "rare" singles on the Hotpie & Candy label, but finally put out here under the group's proper name. The tracks are filled with hard funky drums, choppy guitars, and the kind of grooves that made the material originally easy to pass off as funky work from the 60s! Cuts include "The Plan", "Strokin The Grits", "More Mess On My Thing", "Funky Run Through (parts 1 & 2)", "What You Doing", "Hotpie's Popcorn (part 1)", "Saltin The Soup", and "It Came Over Me". CD

Sun RaContinuation (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Saturn/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1963. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
Mindblowing music from Sun Ra & The Arkestra – sounds recorded during the same marathon session that gave the world the records Other Planes Of There, When Sun Comes Out, and When Angels Speak Of Love – but titles that are much more obscure overall! The initial release of the material featured very misleading notes, but the true details of the session are even more impressive – as Ra plays a variety of unusual instruments alongside piano – including the piano strings, space organ, and clavioline – alongside some sublime straight horn work from John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on alto and oboe, Pat Patrick on baritone, Danny Davis on alto and clarinet, Walter Miller on trumpet, Robert Cummings on bass clarinet, and Ali Hasaan on trombone! The lineup here has that raw power the Arkestra first unleashed after their initial move to New York – almost a sense of new freedom in the new environment – even at a time when they weren't clicking on a financial level, but still continued to push forward with new ideas in music! Some passages have this great approach that links the cosmic ideas of the Arkestra with older traditions of jazz soloing – while others reflect the growing concern of the group with new textures and sounds – making for some very impressive elements on both the horns and percussion. The group is completed by Ronnie Boykins on bass, Art Jenkins on space voice and percussion, and Tommy Hunter on drums, percussion, and some mighty nice reverb – and titles include "Biosphere Blues", "Intergalactic Research", "Earth Primitive Earth", "New Planet", and "Continuation To Jupiter Festival". Beautiful 2CD reissue features sublime sounds from the original tapes, remastered – plus a full bonus CD of unreleased tracks that include "Blue York", "Conversation Of The Universe", "Red Planet Mars", "Cosmic Rays/Next Stop Mars", "The Myth", "Meteor Shower", "Infinity", "The Beginning Of", and "Endlessness". Strut (UK), Late 50s/1960s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99 16.99
A really beautiful collection of rare tracks from Sun Ra – put together by the mighty Gilles Peterson, who we've trusted for years to give us some of the most soulful, cosmic music on this planet! Gilles has a wonderful ear for a certain strand of sounds from Ra and the Arkestra – their more spacey, more spiritual moments – which are strung together in this wicked double-length collection – which also includes a few tracks never issued before! The inside is as beautiful as the cover, and the whole thing's got copious notes on the music – including some track-by-track details that never showed up on some of the original records. 2CD set features 34 tracks in all – with titles that include "When There Is No Sun", "Spontaneous Simplicity", "Love In Outer Space (voc)", "On Jupiter, "We Travel the Spaceways", "Sleeping Beauty", "Mystery Mr Ra", "Blackman", "The All Of Everything", "The World Of Africa", "They Plan To Leave", "Children Of The Sun", "Dreaming", "Black Sky & Blue Moon", "Enlightenment", and "India". Sun Ra & His Omniverse ArkestraDestination Unknown ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1992. New Copy ... $16.99
One of Ra's last recordings – and a great one – caught live at a festival in Germany, with a group that includes Marshall Allen, Ahmed Abdullah, Jothan Callins, Tyrone Hill, Stanley Morgan, and Michael Ray. The set has that Ellingtonish flourish that crept into much of Ra's work after the mid 80s – handled with an edge that still keeps the sound all his own, but which shows an increasing preoccupation for straighter jazz expression, and well crafted large group arrangements – peppered with a few numbers that are more in the older space-spirit of the group. Ray sings vocals on a few numbers with Abdullah and Allen, and titles include "Satellites Are Scanning", "Calling Planet Earth", "Theme Of The Stargazers", "We Travel The Spaceways", and "Carefree". Strut (UK), 1960s/1970s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $32.99 34.99
A whole new side of the talents of Sun Ra – especially if you only know the longer-style jams on some of his albums from the 60s and 70s! From the very start of his career, Ra was every bit as interested in issuing music on 45s as he was on albums – and in fact, at some of the more desperate times, the 7" single turned out to be a very affordable format to try out new ideas – including some great projects with other artists! The array of work presented here is stunning – as the set includes some very up-close and personal moments with Ra on record, plus some tight jazzy tracks from the Arkestra, surprising vocal group material designed to crack the R&B market, and some especially cool projects with other singers too. The package is put together with very detailed notes on all the singles – and while the bulk of this material comes from the key Arkestra years of the late 50s through the early 80s, there's also a few tracks from other dates too – including a handful of songs that were only issued as 45s in later years. This limited part 2 of the vinyl set features wonderful tracks from later years – including "The Blue Set", "Space Loneliness", "State Street", "Love In Outer Space", "Mayan Temple", "Quest", "Rough House Blues", "Journey To Saturn", "Blues On Planet Mars", "The Bridge", "Rocket #9", "The Perfect Man", "Outer Space Plateau", "Extensions", "Orbitration In Blue", "A Blue One", "Big City Blue", "I'm Gonna Unmask The Batman", "Saturn Moon", "Disco 2021", "Sometimes I'm Happy", "I Am The Instrument", "Cosmic Drama", "Nuclear War", "Hell #1", and "Cosmo-Extensions" – plus the tracks "Tell Her To Come On Home" and "I'm Making Believe" by Little Mack. Jorge Lopez Ruiz & Pocho LapoubleViejas Raices De Las Colonias del Rio De La Plata ... LP
Trova/Altercat (Germany), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... About May 25, 2021
One of the coolest records we've ever heard from this legendary Argentine pianist – a set that has Jorge Lopez Ruiz playing lots of Fender Rhodes, and mixing it in with both rootsy Latin percussion and a number of other keyboards too! The set's almost a South American version of some of Herbie Hancock's work with the Headhunters – with more traditional percussion passages in the mix, but blended with sounds that include Arp and mini-moog too – which gives the whole thing a criss-crossing vibe that alternates from the surface of the planet to the deeper ranges of the cosmos! Ruiz is wonderful throughout – often very spacious, in a thoughtful way that only makes each note have more power – and titles include "La Hora De La Sed Maldita", "Eterna Prescencia", "Mira Tu", "El Viaje De Dumpty", "Balewada", and "Para Nostros Solamente". Armando SciasciaViolin Reactions (200 gram pressing) ... LP
Vedette/Roundtable (Australia), 1974. New Copy ... $18.99 26.98
The definitely got the title right on this one – as the album's got plenty of violin, but never in the way you might expect – as the instrument is used in all these weird and wonderful ways that really make the record a treat! There's neither classical nor jazz-based violin approaches at play – and instead, Armando Sciascia almost seems to be trying to find all the weird, offbeat sounds he can from the instrument – but in ways that are sometimes funky, sometimes dark, and always pretty darn compelling! Some tracks have these chugging rhythms that come from percussion by Tullio De Piscopo – best known for his later club work – others have a spare, moody vibe with offbeat string passages echoing in space – almost as if they're electronic, with weirdly spacey qualities. The record is quite experimental for a sound library session – and titles include "Reagente B", "Acidocloroscuccinico", "Atomo Asimmetrico", "Nucleofilo", "Planctonico", "Enantiomorfo", and "Substrato Ax". Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $24.99
A sweet trio set from Japanese pianist Takeshi Shibuya – a player who can sometimes have the angular qualities of the Thelonious Monk generation, but who also rivals some of the warmth of players like Kenny Barron or Tommy Flanagan – especially on their own recordings in Japan! There's a nicely vibrant quality to the way the piano is captured – a bit like the sound of a trio date on Three Blind Mice – and the group features equally strong work on bass from Tamio Kawabata and on drums from Shoichi Miyazawa – both of whom seem to follow Shibuya's lead first, then fall into a groove. Titles include the originals "Cook Out", "My Old Dream", and "Shadow & Shade" – plus versions of "Solider In The Rain", "I Didn't Know About You", and "Ode To A Potato Plant". CD

Singers UnlimitedMagic Voices – 7CD Box Set ... CD
MPS/Motor (Germany), Early 70s. Used 7CD ... $119.99
For completists only! We always knew the folks at Motor Music were mad, but never this mad. Yet only beautiful madness could have led them to put out this insanely over-stuffed set of the complete works of one of the spookiest vocal groups of all time. Led by Gene Puerling of the Hi-Los, and recorded by the studio genius of MPS, the Singers Unlimited were a memorable group who managed to bring together jazz, easy listening, pop sounds, and even a bit of TV-jingle technique, in order to form a unique blend of harmony vocals that sounds like nothing else in the planet. Some of the stuff is cheesy, sure, but lots of it will blow your mind if you go in for the vocal group sound (as we do!) This set's got a massive 14 albums on 7 CDs, and it's packaged with a lavish booklet full of information, discographies, and essays on the band. We can't recommend this for everyone, but it's a stunning batch of material. And even though you do see some of their albums cheaply in the used record bins, this set contains a lot of stuff that you can never ever find. And as an additional bonus, the group is backed by folks like Clare Fischer, Art Van Damme, Oscar Peterson, Pat Williams, and others – and they also sing completely a cappella on 3 full albums! Wild. A rare set issued on a tiny label from Arkansas – but a set that's got all the charm, poise, and sparkle of some of the best deep soul on late 70s Columbia Records! Stuckey's got a touch of southern soul in his voice, with a sweet cracking sound – and that honest approach is mixed with some warmer modern soul arrangements – a bit like the style of some of the best Tyrone Davis or Johnnie Taylor records from the time! The blend of southern and modern is wonderful – and handled with a sense of care that really makes you think that the whole thing was done at one of the best studios out on the coast – rather than some tiny outpost west of the Mississippi. A great record – one of those cases where the rarity is matched by the quality – on titles that include "I've Got Plans For You", "Love Of Mine", "If You Want To", "Hold Me Close", and "The First Time". The early 70s glam masterpiece from T Rex – setting the standard for the sounds to come – and pop landmark status aside, it's probably the best album Bolan, Mickey Finn and the group ever cut! On Electric Warrior, T Rex resurrects the primitive spirit of the seediest rock of their predecessors, with a sound that's loud and anthemic. They hide sax, fluegelhorn and classical-styled strings under loud guitars, making this some of prettiest sleaze of the 70s! Classic! Ace (UK), Early 90s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A fantastic collection of work from a real golden age in hip hop – a period that you'll probably guess from the image of the Native Tongues posse on the front – served up here in a compilation that brings together classics from De La Soul, The Jungle Brothers, Monie Love, and many others! The set list is superb – and while most of the tracks are well-remembered gems, and not the kind of rare cuts we usually hear from Ace Records – taken together, they're a tremendous reminder of a time when hip hop really came alive – bursting with wit, wisdom, and a whole new sense of musical imagination! As usual with Ace, the liner notes and other details are great – making this way more than just a slap-dash mix of hits – and titles include "You're Not Coming Home (Mase's funkay recall mix)" by Groove Garden, "Age Ain't Nothin But A #" by Chi Ali, "Bonita Applebum" by Tribe Called Quest, "Sunshine Men" by Freestyle Fellowship, "Peachfuzz" by KMD, "K Sera Sera" by Justin Warfield, "It's A Shame" by Monie Love, "Doin Our Own Dang" by Jungle Brothers, "OPP" by Naughty By Nature, "Doowutchyalike" by Digital Underground, "A Roller Skating Jam Named Saturdays" by De La Soul, "The Choice Is Yours" by Black Sheep, "All For One" by Brand Nubian, "My Definition Of A Boombastic Jazz Style" by Dream Warriors, "Mama Gave Birth To The Soul Children" by Queen Latifah with De La Soul, "Where I'm From" by Digable Planets, and "We Run Things (It's Like Dat)" by Da Bush Babees. A mad mix of space-age instrumentals, groovy vocal tunes, and lots lots more – and definitely one of the coolest compilations we've ever seen! The cover states that "a galaxy of stars goes where no other compilation has ever gone before" – and we can definitely agree with that claim, given the unique feel of the music, and the wonderful assortment of tracks in the set! The set list draws on many different genres – early rock, offbeat country, easy instrumentals, sound library gems, and lots more – all to bring together a startling array of sounds that's more than enough to send you into outer space on your own. Weird tracks are mixed nicely with tuneful numbers – so that there's a really great sense of discovery as the set rolls on – a vibe that's as well-chosen as some of Ace Records' Halloween compilations, but in a sci fi sort of mode. Titles include "Armstrong" by John Stewart, "Destination Moon" by The Ames Brothers, "Lunar Rhapsody" by Les Baxter, "Happy Blues For John Glenn" by Lightnin Hopkins, "Theme From Star Trek" by Leonard Nimoy, "Everyone's Gone To The Moon" by Bobby Womack, "Doctor Who" by BBC Radiophonic Workshop, "Visa To The Stars" by Jean Jacques Perry & Gershon Kingsley, "Rocket To The Moon" by Moon Mullican, "Forbidden Planet" by David Rose, "Everybody Gets To Go To The Moon" by Themla Houston, and "Footprints On The Moon" by Johnny Harris.
