Der PlanSave Your Software ... CD
Bureau B (Germany), 1989. New Copy ... $16.99
A never-issued album from German electronic geniuses Der Plan – a record that's billed as "autonomous robot product – produced by machine only" – so maybe the group held it back to prevent some sort of a robot uprising! Yet the only uprising the record might have produced would be that of a rave-like party – as the tunes are upbeat, groovy, and filled with all the wit that we always love in the group's work – short, catchy tracks that mix offbeat noises with more tuneful elements – all with vocals that are so heavily processed, they might well come from an old Speak & Spell toy. Titles include "Repair Yourself", "Copy Copy Machine", "Cyberspace", "LPB", "I Want To Sing Like Ella", and "Fanuk Rock". CD

✨✧ Der PlanDie Peitsche Des Lebens ... CD
Ata Tak/Bureau B (Germany), 1991. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The last album in the cool classic run of German gems from Der Plan – a group that few folks paid attention to at the time, but who really gave the world some wonderful electronic music in the post-punk years! These guys really distill all the best sides of the German electronic experiments of the 70s – serving things up in shorter tunes that are filled with unusual twists and turns, and which also have plenty of offbeat vocals and a nice sense of humor too – almost like little audio cartoons, with a quality that's far more long-lasting than some of their contemporaries! Despite the 1991 date of the record, the style here is every bit as great as the group's earliest music – and like most of their music, there's hardly any connection to a real epoch in sound – as the whole thing's so darn unique. Titles include "El Cigarro", "Kleiner Junge", "Wir Babies", "Vive Le Vie", "Alter Mann", "Es Werde Licht", and "Spiel 77". CD

✨✧ Der PlanEs Ist Eine Fremde Und Seltsame Welt ... CD
Ata Tak/Bureau B (Germany), 1987. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The title translates to "it's a strange and peculiar world" – and there's maybe no better introduction to the mad electronic music of this wonderful German trio from the 80s! Der Plan were part of that special small slice of the German new wave – groups who didn't rely on darkness or angst to get their message across – but instead mixed together whimsical elements with musical experimentation – often in ways that were years ahead of their time! Imagine Kraftwerk scoring the music for cartoons, and you'd get part of the idea here – but that's hardly the start of the sonic delights within – as the album features short tracks in many different varieties – exploding with innovation at each twist and turn. Titles include "1 Mann 1 Ball", "Bleib Gold", "Kennen Sie Koln", "Frisch Verliebt", "Komm Zurick", "Get Out", and "Ich Hab Den Jordan Gesehn". CD

JM PaganKiu I Els Seus Amics ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A strange spacey soundtrack from mid 80s Spain – one composed for a daytime TV show, but with a weird electronic vibe that must have shocked the kids who were watching at the time! The music has some echoes of the cooler side of the German new wave – not the darkness of the cold wave side, but maybe the mix of playfulness and experimentation you'd hear from Pyrolator or Der Plan – both of whom would be a good comparison the spirit of the songs on this set! Most tunes are instrumental, but still pretty darn catchy – and when there's vocals, they're usually processed in the best 80s electro way. Titles include "Una Dia Especial", "Tema De Kiu", "El Mon De Kiu", "Un Dia Boig", "Beat De Beth", "Ball De Beth", "Quan Jo Sigui Una Estrella", and "Tema De La Lluno". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousEins Und Zwei Und Drei Und Vier – Deutsche Experimentelle Pop Musik 1980 to 1986 ... CD
Bureau B (Germany), Early 80s. New Copy ... $17.99
Some of the coolest work of the German scene in the 80s – a range of electronic, experimental pop that's very different than both the longer prog recordings of the 70s, and some of the mellower ambient sounds that were also coming out of Germany at the same time! Instead, the cuts here are from the German new wave – a scene that's named similarly to the ones in the US and UK in the early 80s, but which has a vibe that's both darker at times, and more playful too – much more interesting overall, and with results that weren't nearly as well-circulated at the time! Instrumentation is heavy on electronics, but used in ways that are nicely varied, and often mixed with all sorts of other cool sounds too – not nearly as stiff or dark as the cold wave generation, and with results that are full of surprises all the way through! Titles include "Hey Baby Hop" by Der Plan, "Keine Python" by Dunkelziffer, "Sandkorn" by Die Doraus Und Die Marinas, "Muster" by Populare Mechanik, "Hohe Punk Kleiner Mann" by Asmus Tietchens, "Die Farbe War Mod" by Carambolage, "Sample & Hold" by Xao Seffcheque, "Im Zoo" by Pyrolator, "Sentimental" by Traneinvasion, "Erwin Das Tanzende Messer" by Di Zimmermanner, "Austauschprogramm" by Die Partei, and "Sexueller Nostand" by Ostro 430. VariousMusik Music Musique – 1980 The Dawn Of Synth Pop (3CD set) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), 1980. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99 30.99
A great little set that brings together the big bang of electro pop that hit the UK scene at the start of the 80s – work from that moment when previous, more experimental strands of music from the initial post-punk years started cleaning things up, going for hooks, and making some pretty darn catchy music in the process! Yet the work here is also maybe still far from some of the overplayed big hits of a few years later – that key moment when early experimenters were crafting some great tunes, but still not sounding too commercial – and sometimes enticing other artists who didn't always record in this mode to join in on the fun! And if you think you know all the sounds from this time, this box set might give you a big surprise – as there's plenty of work here that we didn't expect – not just more obscure tunes by bigger names, but also some obscure artists who fit right into the groove – all given plenty of coverage in the large booklet of notes. 3CD set features 58 tracks in all - with work by The Passage, Berlin Blondes, Buggles, M, Silicon Teens, Rockets, John Foxx, Science, Fad Gadget, Zeus, OMD, Pauline Murray & The Invisible Girls, Dark Day, Der Plan, Kevin Harrison, Japan, Dalek I, Taxi Girl, Systems, Karel Fialka, Nini Raviolette, The Korgis, Alex Fergusson, The Metronomes, Lori & The Chameleons, and others. Stevie WonderJourney Through The Secret Life Of Plants ... LP
Tamla, 1979. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99
Very high concept work from Stevie Wonder! The record is, in fact, about the "secret life of plants" – partially used as a soundtrack for a film of the same name, but also acting as kind of a storybook in itself! Stevie's exploring a wide range of plant life and plant themes on the set – often in a way that has his keyboards taking center stage in little symphonies of soul that unfold like the petals of a flower in the morning sun – and which stand out as quite different from some of his vocal work, marking him as a talented electronic musician in his own right. Many tracks do have lyrics, too – often with themes of growing, seeding, and other garden metaphors that are easily translated to the human experience. Titles include "Secret Life Of Plants", "Outside My Window", "A Seed's A Star", "Race Babbling", "Black Orchid", "Send One Your Love", "Tree", "Come Back As A Flower", and "Ai No Sono". Cannonball AdderleyCannonball Adderley Sextet In New York ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1962. Used ... $4.99
Rock-solid live material from the classic Cannonball Adderley Sextet – a combo who could usually groove even better on a concert date then they could in the studio! The album's one of a number of key live sides from Cannon in the 60s – and although it pre-dates his work on Capitol, it's done in a similar spacious mode – with plenty of longish tracks that build upon the core groove set down by Joe Zawinul's piano, Sam Jones' bass, and Louis Hayes' drums – a perfect backdrop for the creative and complicated solos of Cannon on alto, Nat Adderley on cornet, and Yusef Lateef on tenor, flute, and oboe! The date was recorded live at the Village Vanguard in 1962 – and titles include "Gemini", "Planet Earth", "Dizzy's Business", "Syn-anthesia", "Scotch & Water", and "Cannon's Theme". CD

Given that the group already features Ken Vandermark on saxes, the pairing of Anderson and Ken is a heck of a match – driven on strongly here by the bassist Kent Kessler, who's at the height of his powers during these years – and drummer Hamid Drake, whose range is maybe even more bold here than usual. Astral TravelIf You Say You Are From This Planet, Why Do You Treat It Like You Do? ... LP
Hyperjazz (Italy), 2020. New Copy ... $11.99
A record that really carries its message in its title – a set of spiritual ruminations on the nature of existence – inspired by the writings of Sun Ra, and carried off with vocals by Dwight Trible – who joins this Italian group for the recording! Each song is inspired by a different poem from Ra's This Planet Is Doomed – and the music is freely improvised, but in a relatively spiritual way – with leader Tommaso Cappellato on drums, with Fabrizio Puglisi on piano and keyboards, Piero Bittolo Bon on reeds and electronics, and Marco Privato on bass. The set may be one of the most avant albums that Trible ever recorded – and his vocals have the strong resonance of his straighter recordings, but a bit more bite, and a really mighty reach – on titles that include "Tomorrow's Destiny", "Infinity", "Science Has Changed", "The End", "Time", and "You Are From This Planet". Dave DeRoseAgile Experiments Vol 1 ... LP
Dave De Rose Music (UK), 2018. Near Mint- ... $16.99
Really compelling work from the farther reaches of the UK jazz scene – a series of "agile experiments" from drummer Dave DeRose – who works here with other musicians from the scene in a series of unbridled improvisations! The work was created with two guiding principles – the musicians could not discuss or plan their performance together in advance, and they would also play for a full hour, with no breaks at all! The idea grew out of a series of live performances, but then was captured by Dave in the studio – with results that are as varied as the musicians involved. Some selections are very unusual and almost abstract, others have a more familiar free jazz mode – and the ability of DeRose to shift in these spaces is one of the highlights of the set. The first volume includes performances with John Edwards on bass and Dan Nicholls on electronics; Rory Simmons on trumpet and electronics and George Crowley on saxes and effects; Dan Nicholls on electronics and Karl Vanden Bossche on percussion; Tom Challenger on saxes and Colin Somervell on bass; Sam Crowe on Rhodes and effects and Level Nevill Malcolm on bass; and Dario Rossetti Bonell on guitar and effects. Heavy funk from the Indy scene of the late 60s – the lost album by one of the funkiest combos in the Midwest! Ebony Rhythm Band have an incredible sound that seems to take the heavy bottom of New Orleans Funk and merge it with the trippier elements of Detroit psychedelic soul – no surprise, considering they hailed from Indianapolis, a point about halfway between the two cities! The tracks on the set have a really great tripped-out groove – using lots of guitar and organ over heavy rhythms, in a style that's a bit like the Meters at times – but a lot freer flowing. The album features 2 tracks that formed the basis of one of the group's singles – plus a lot more that were never issued at the time, including a few by other incarnations of the combo! Titles include "Soul Heart Transplant", "Ode To Billie Joe", "Light My Fire", "Vanilla Fudge", "Get Yourself Together", "Drugs Ain't Cool", "Fool Am I", and "It's Too Late For Love". Great work from a really overlooked group – one who have the skills of a prog act, but some of the sensitivity of a more folksy combo – which maybe is why they were such a perfect fit for the unusual sound of the Dawn label in the UK! These guys clearly have chops – the keyboard and guitar solos certainly testify to that – but they also space things out with some gentler, more personal moments – and here are also maybe a bit more hook-heavy than in the past, with a sense of almost crossing over with a few key cuts on the set. One of the catchiest numbers here is the great "Janet Planet", which has really cool production from Ian McDonald, who brings out all the best elements in the tune – and other titles include "Gormenghast", "Misty Morning Way", "Sheba's Song", "Mystery Might", and "Why". An all-instrumental album from this lost German group of the late 70s – a combo who are definitely rock, but who play with some of the freer, more open modes of a jazz group too – maybe working here in a style that could be called prog fusion, or fusion prog! The lineup features work on flute, saxes, and trombone – mixed with some very cool organ and other keyboard work – used in ways that create all these spacey, snakey tones that lead the horns onward into the mix – while some of the core energy from the guitar, bass, and drums keeps things firmly grounded on the planet! This can maybe be heard to best effect on the very cool, almost funky title track "Im Tal Der Emmen" – and other titles include "Schubi Dubi Kong", "Ich Bin Der Postillion D'Amour Aber Meine Uhr Geht Vuur", "Der Don Juan Hat Seine Turnschuh An" and "Uck Zuruckspulen". Underrated later Airplane – issued at the time on their own Grunt label! Bark came out in '71, after the departure of co-founder Marty Balin, but despite that obviously important loss, there are some pretty cool positive changes in approach, even if it wasn't enough to keep the group flying for too much longer! For one, it's got some excellent violin by Papa John Creach on several tunes – and Slick and Kantor's vocals and songwriting are still in solid shape here. A gem of a record from the legendary Pharoah Sanders – a set that's recorded right at the tail end of his famous years for Impulse Records, and which has all the best qualities of his last few records for that label! The vibe here is a lot like Elevation or Love Is In Us All – a return to warmer, more spiritual modes, with less of the completely outside qualities of Sanders' early 70s material – a great flow, lots of modal energy in the rhythms, and that mix of soul and freedom that reminds us again that Pharoah is one of the founders of the spiritual jazz style! The group features Danny Mixon on piano and organ, Calvin Hill on bass, and Greg Bandy on drums – and the music was all recorded by ORTF Radio, with fantastic fidelity – and this reissue is completely legit, and remastered from the original tapes. An album that not only broke the bossa big in the US – but a set that also really helped transform the sound of the organ in jazz! Not only is the record a key meeting of bossa rhythms and jazz organ – transplanted hugely to the US after a big initial Wanderley run in 60s Brazil – but the set also features some of the cleanest organ lines to ever hit these shores – a big difference from the heavier flutter that some of the US organists were using a few years before, and a sharp shift towards cleaner keyboard sounds for the rest of the decade. Instrumentation's nice and spare – mostly bass and percussion, plus a bi tof flute and guitar – and titles include the massive hit "Summer Samba", plus "Rain", "Beach Samba", "Song Of The Jet", "Cried, Cried", and "Girl From Ipanema". One of those very cool Italian sound library albums that sits at a perfect space between funk and psychedelia – filled with tracks that are as heavy on fuzz as they are on drums – all instrumental throughout, and with a style that's sure to please folks on both sides of the fence! The rhythms really set the scene here – usually hard and heavy, and fast moving at a level that really seems to set the guitar and keyboards on fire – maybe played with even more frenzy here in the short space of the tunes than they might have been on a longer record of psychedelic jams! The artists aren't listed, and we're guessing these cuts were all laid down by the same studio players – as the set has a nicely unified vibe, and keeps on going strong through titles that include "Acromatic", "Spleen", "Displeasure", "Lustful", "Trip", "Ticklish", "Plankton", and "Consumption". Riverside/Concord, 1962. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
CD

Beautiful sounds from two modern masters of the guitar – both playing here on a mix of electric and acoustic variations of the instrument, with sonic properties that unfold in wonderful ways throughout the set! Both Grubbs and Walker have a way of doing a lot with just a little – even when some effects are used to complicate the sound a bit – always still very organic, and with an understanding of the elements that's always brought back to a completely coherent sense of the guitar. Grubbs plays piano at a few spots, but most of the set features guitar – and titles include "Pump Fake On The Death Rattle", "Uglification", "Tap On The Shoulder", "Accepting Most Plans", and "The Madman From Massachusetts In An Empty Bar". Hi Hat, 1968. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very early live set by Pharoah Sanders – very much in the best modes of his late 60s albums on Impulse Records, and a great addition to that era of recordings from the tenor genius! The performance was recorded by French Radio, and has great sound quality – really capturing the soulful shadings of the group, which is a quartet with a young Lonnie Liston Smith on piano, Sirone on bass, and Majeed Shabazz on drums. There's no other instrumentation at all, but the interplay between Sanders and Smith is wonderful – as full of tonal color as their studio recordings – and Sirone is really fantastic too. The performance is presented as one long continuous track – beginning with a long improvisation, then moving through "Venus" and "The Creator Has A Master Plan" – all as spiritual as you'd expect! Transversales Disques (France), 1975. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
80s issue of some seminal recordings of some of the most influential, yet unde-documented jazz pianists of the bop and post bop eras. There's three tracks by the Bebop Boys, with Bud Powell, Kenny Dorham, Sonny Stitt, Al Hall and Kenny Clarke: "Bebop In Pastel", "Seven Up" and "Blues In Bebop". Following that there's 5 stellar tracks from Lennie Tristano's trio with Billy Bauer and John Levy, performing his cerebral and vastly influential music on two takes of "Supersonic", plus "On A Planet", "Air Pocket" and "Celestia" and fouor popping bop numbers from Herbie Nichols in a small group rolling through "'s Wonderful", "Nichols & Dimes", "Who's Blues" and "My Lady Gingersnap". Cool space songs in all sorts of styles – raw rockers, swinging vocal numbers, and even some cool instrumentals that have all sorts of weird sound effects and spacey modes – brought together here in a wonderfully overstuffed package! We've loved the other releases in the Destination series from Bear Family – but somehow the addition of postwar space age modes really sends things over the top here – as the tunes explode with all sorts of weird instrumental, lyrical, and production touches – even when the music comes from bigger-name artists! There's a few movie trailers thrown in the mix, but most of the set is from rare singles – and includes 37 tracks in all – including "The Screamin Meemies From Planet X" by Merv Griffin, "Destination Twenty One Hundred & Sixty Five" by The Cues, "Spaceship Boogie" by Winifred Atwell, "Planet Named Desire" by Billy Mize, "Rock-et" by Teacho & His Students, "Detomic Orbit" by Dave & The Detomics, "Red Planet Rock" by Don Lang & His Frantic Five, "Moon Rocket" by Dean Hightower, "Guitars In Space" by Billy Mure, "Visitor From Space" by Dick Jacobs, "Flying Saucer" by Freddy Sunder, "The Thing" by Bill Buchanan, and "Jupiter C" by Pat & The Satellites. An ear-opening set of Japanese jazz from a time when that nation's scene was really taking off – a period in the 70s when all sorts of new artists and new ideas were really flying around – and leaving behind a huge recorded legacy that's been mostly out of reach for us in the west! Japan always had a few big names in jazz that got exported overseas, but the work here is from some of the smaller names who were still turning out incredible music – much of it only issued on vinyl, and not reissued later – brought together here with copious notes that really tell you a heck of a lot about the music! There's definitely a post-Coltrane vibe going on – lots of spiritual elements, mixed with both moments that are funkier and more soulful, and others that are a bit more freewheeling – often stretched out on extended tracks that really let the artists take off and find their space. Titles include "Black Nile" by Hideyasu Terakawa, "Kirisame" by Ryusei Quartet, "Honey Sanba" by Katsuyuki Itakura, "Cumulonimbus" by Shigeharu Mukai, "Song Of Island" by Yasuhiro Kohno Trio + One, "Phoebus" by Hiroshi Murakami & Dancing Sphinx, "Morning Tiede" by Kohsuke Mine, "Kemo Sabe" by Masao Nakajima, "Song For Hope" by Aki Takase, "Planets" by Masaru Imada Trio + 1, "1/4 Samba" by Tatsuya Nakamura, "Acoustic Chicken" by Koichi Matsukaze, and "Cumorah" by Eiji Nakayama. Motown, 2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
A nice one from Badu – one with a depth of feeling and genuine soulful vibes that live up to its title, despite the fact that she records for one of the world's biggest media conglomerates! It's all about the vibe here. Erykah rolls her syllables, scats and emotes feelings more than an actual narrative in the strongest of these cuts. It's not that she's forgone lyrics; but it's all about the ambience, not radio sing-a-longs. She also dives head first into her organic soul and hip hop hybrid sound a little more sparingly, but still better than any of the ladies that followed her lead after Baduizm. She channels Donald Byrd on the great "Think Twice", which is pretty indicative of the vibe as a whole. The groove is sorta mellow, but in a very tripped-out way, with deep organ washes and synth, scratchy soul guitar, and crisp organic beats. There's an appearance by Dead Prez on "Steady On The Grind", and a really sweet old school flavored remake of the great "Love Of My Life" track from the Brown Sugar soundtrack with Queen Latifah and Bahamadia, but for the most part Erykah is sweating soul on her own spiritual plane here. It's gonna take a little while to sink in, but this may be her best album (despite whatever naysaying BS you may read in mainstream reviews.) Tracks include "Bump It", the great single "Danger", "Woo", "Back In The Day" and "I Want You". CD

Why did Motown ever let the Four Tops get away? This album was their last for the label – and it's an excellent one, filled with soul, sweetness, and some of the best arrangements the group had in their later years! The soul component is super-high – with tight group instrumentation that reminds us of the best Philly backing combos of the same time, but leaner too – as Dennis Coffey and Wah Wah Ragin are on guitars, Jack Ashford handles percussion, and Leonard Caston adds some nice funky keyboards. The real talent, though, is the group – and Levi Stubbs is in fine fine form on cuts like "She's An Understanding Woman", "I Am Your Man", "If You Let Me", "Nature Planned It", "Walk With Me, Talk With Me Darling", and "Happy (Is A Bumpy Road)". Even includes a great version of Todd Rundgren's wonderful track "We Gotta Get You A Woman"! LP, Vinyl record album

The Kay-Gees' funkiest record ever – a set that's harder and sharper than anything else they'd ever record in years to come! Grabbing this one up is like finding a lost Kool & The Gang album from the early years – which is no surprise, since Ronald Bell of the group produced, and wrote a lot of the songs with the group – maybe acting as their mentor, and definitely giving the young group a great showcase for their boundless energy, and tight skills in the groove department! The band are incredibly tight – with lots of hard drums, choppy guitar, and the rolling party feel that made Kool & The Gang so great during their best years – captured here with a similarly raw production style. There's some great horns that blast in and out, sounding very off-beat at the best moments – like the classic "Who's the Man With the Master Plan", sampled by YZ many years ago – or other funky cuts like "Ain't No Time", "Get Down", and "You've Got to Keep on Bumpin". A really unusual album from bassist William Parker – an artist whose musical world is usually quite far from the 70s soul of Curtis Mayfield – even though both Mayfield and Parker are pretty darn righteous individuals! Yet here, Curtis and William come together in a stunning way – as Parker reworks classic Mayfield songs, and transforms them into fantastic vehicles for spiritual jazz expression! The group has a warmly collaborative vibe, and energy that feels like some lost indie jazz project from the 70s – all held together by Parker's bold acoustic bass and masterful leadership – in a lineup that includes vocals from Leena Conquest, piano from Dave Burrell, saxes and flute from Sabir Mateen, tenor and soprano from Darryl Foster, trumpet from Lewis Barnes, drums from Hamid Drake, and poetry and voice from Amari Baraka. With a lineup like that, you can already guess the vibe – and we can promise that the whole is even better than you might have hoped! A wonderful reunion of Pharoah Sanders and vocalist Leon Thomas – and a set that captures a lot of the same energy as the pair's previous record – Karma! Thomas' vocals are in wonderful form for the set – stretching out soulfully on the extended classic "Hum-Allah-Hum-Allah-Hum-Allah" – a title that has much of the same grace and power as "The Creator Has A Master Plan. The rest of the players on the date include Lonnie Liston Smith on piano, Richard Davis and Cecil McBee on basses, and Idris Muhammad and Roy Haynes on drums – and unusually enough, each of the double bassists and drummers gets their own channel of sound to work with! Quite possibly the best-remembered album from Pharoah Sanders' legendary run at Impulse Records – a set that crossed over big, and sold to countless folks who might not have bought a jazz album this hip otherwise! The record was Sanders' first in the wake of Coltrane's passing – and it's a beautiful extended suite of tracks that flows with a sense of grace, power, and majesty that's simply breathtaking – a new level of expression in spiritual jazz – and virtually the blueprint for an entire generation to come! Really amazing sounds from Japanese drummer Takeo Moriyama – a record that's sometimes spiritual and organic, sometimes very unusually put-together – and which makes as much use of inventive percussion as it does the leaders drums! The group's got this very cool twin-sax approach – both tenor and soprano, each played by Toshihiko Inoue and Shuichi Enomoto – alternating between the instruments, and creating these textures that are sometimes sharp-edged, but always very striking – especially when the album's percussion from Yoji Sadanari really takes off! The whole thing almost feels a bit out of time, especially for its early 80s recording date – almost like one of those unusual Japanese spiritual sessions from a decade before, which also might not be what you're expecting from the 80s cover image too. A great assortment of funky jazzy cuts from recent years – a stunning package that shows just how much the love of jazz on the dancefloor has exploded in the contemporary underground – in ways that are so different than the modes of decades back! Yes, there was a time when "jazz" on a dance track meant a lame sax solo or stolen sample from the 70s – but things really evolved past that, to a whole generation of artists who've really re-embraced live instrumentation mixed with clubbier rhythms – pushing things way way past the more familiar jazz funk sounds of back in the day! In other words, these cuts are new, but also resonate with some vintage elements – very fresh, and exploding with new ideas and very groovy sounds – titles that include "Finding Common Ground" by Mario Cruz, "Catfish Sandwich" by Brian Charette, "Yggdrasil" by PJS, "Theme From Quartet" by Fox Capture Plan, "Another Brick In The Wall" by Wildcard, "Falling In Love With Love" by Niki Haris, "Lisbon" by Markpaulnorton, "Gotta Be Free" by Nina Mya, "K's Dream" by Yusuke Shima, "San Gogo Fu" by Caroxfa, "Fly" by Nicole Banks, and "Jungle" by Shahin Novrasli. Jazzman (UK), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A tremendous entry in this wonderful series – a set that proudly proclaims its contents with the "NOW" on the cover! Back when the Spiritual Jazz series first started on the Jazzman label, the music was mostly relegated to material of the John Coltrane generation and the generation that followed – but in the past decade or so, there's been a huge explosion in new artists that explore the deeper, more righteous currents of jazz – music that's pulled in from the farther reaches of free improvisation, to righteous, message-oriented styles that often mix modal rhythms with more exploratory solo passages. Yet this new generation is hardly slavish to the sounds of Impulse Records – as they've really moved beyond, and have used a globe's worth of influences and new 21st Century concepts to bring fresh spirit to the music – opening things up in ways that have made this new movement one of our greatest sources of inspiration in recent years. This double-length entry is a fantastic overview of the sounds that are currently reshaping the planet – and titles on volume 1 include "Lizard Waltz" by Benjamin Herman "Wisdom Of Elders" by Shabaka & The Ancestors, "Soul" by Cat Toren's Human Kind, "Nimeton" by Oiro Pena, "Echoes Of Ancient Sahara" by Darryl Yokley's Sound Reformation, "Winter" by Black Flower, "Shamal Wind" by Chip Wickham, "An Angel Fell" by Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids, "Sounds Like Now" by Damon Locks, "Gnawa" by Makaya McCraven, and "The Black Ark" by Nat Birchall. Wonderful work from two players who've just gotten better and better over the decades – both musicians who've made a huge impression from the late 70s onward, but who also continue to grow and refine their ideas as the years go on! This set features beautiful duets recorded at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York, in 2009 – with Bang on violin and thumb piano, and William Parker on bass, plus a bit of shakuhashi and dousn gouni as well. Both players handle strings at a level that's far different than most of their contemporaries or influences – and have this sublimely spiritual style that's often a bit exotic too – but never in the sort of easier ways of Bang's Vietnam-related projects. Instead there's a very freely creative spirit as both players come together – finding a unique voice that's extremely moving, and never too heavy-handed – a huge reminder of why we love them both so much. A mixed bag of tracks from Gary – but a really nice record overall, one that has him stretching out in the Atlantic years! 3 of the album's tracks were recorded live in Montreux, the others were recorded back in New York – and Gary plays a variety of instruments in addition to vibes, including electric piano, organ, and piano. Tracks are a mixture of modern and hippy, and titles include "Moonchild/In Your Quiet Place", "The Sunset Bell", "Hullo Bolinas", "General Mojo's Well Laid Plan", and "Chega De Saudade". CD

Comet Is ComingAfterlife ... CD
Universal (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $9.99
A brilliant blast from The Comet Is Coming – their second album on Impulse in less than a year – and it's as exciting as anything they've done so far! Their core vibe of mixing spiritual jazz with electronic experimentation is here in full force, but they take it new directions. While the trio carries the influences from 70s spacey fusion influences and modern London jazz on the other, it always feels fully unique and of their own invention. Part of what's so exciting is they can strip things down to minimalist vibe of melodic sax, spare drums and bubbling electronics to far-reaching jazz funk from one track to the next – this is trio with range! Poet Joshua Idehen delivers a righteous vocal on the opener "All That Matters Is The Moments" that sets the stage for the soaring ride that follows, including "The Softness Of The Present", "The Afterlife", "Lifeforce Part I", "Lifeforce Part II" and "The Seven Planetary Heavens". Norman ConnorsThis Is Your Life (plus bonus track) ... CD
Arista/Soul Brother (UK), 1977. New Copy ... $9.99 19.99
A fantastic bit of modern soul from Norman Connors – proof that he was still growing and changing as an artist, continuing to push his groove into whole new areas as the 70s progressed. The record takes the smooth jazzy sound of the earlier Buddah sides, sharpens it into a more sophisticated modern soul style, fused with a bit of a quiet storm vocal approach, to create a wonderfully mature album of silky soul tracks. Part of the strength comes from the vocalists – who include Eleanor Mills and Jean Carn – and Norman also does a bit of singing on the record, and comes across surprisingly well. Tracks include "Stella", "This Is Your Life", "Wouldn't You Like To See", "Butterfly", "Captain Connors", and a wonderful jazzy soul reworking of "The Creator Has A Master Plan". CD also features a bonus track – a 12" mix of "Captain Connors". CD

DellsDells Sing Dionne Warwick's Greatest Hits ... LP
Cadet, 1972. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Forget Dionne Warwick, and think Burt Bacharach – because on this sublime little set, The Dells are singing some of Burt's greatest tunes ever – all set to impeccable arrangements by the legendary Charles Stepney! The album's more wonderful than you might even expect – a true high point in the career of all parties involved – and a tremendous recasting of Bacharach's original brilliance – taking his key compositions into the most sophisticated styles of the Chicago soul scene in the 70s! There's a sense of timing and phrasing here that's quite unique – hardly simple covers of Dionne Warwick's approach to these hits – and Stepney's backings feature his own Fender Rhodes, guitar from Phil Upchurch, percussion from members of The Pharoahs, and some fuller horns, harp, and strings. The Dells are equally great too – and serve up some of the best vocals of their career – really magnificent harmonies, and soaring solo parts that seem to even go beyond their best-known hits. Titles include "Walk On By", "Trains & Boats & Planes", "I Say A Little Prayer", "Wives & Lovers", "Close To You", "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself", "This Guy's In Love With You", "Raindrops Keep Fallin On My Head", and "A House Is Not A Home". Eric DemarsanL'Armee Des Ombres ... LP
Universal (France), 1969. New Copy ... $19.99
A fantastic score from Eric Demarsan – a French composer who's maybe known best for his work with director Jean-Pierre Melville, and who really knocks it out of the park for this film with the director! L'Armee Des Ombres has a slightly wider scope than the usual more solitary, brooding film by Melville – and Demarsan's score follows a similar lead – using some occasional grander passages that match the best Morricone music of the time, then blending in a few more French-styled numbers – and balancing the score with a nice sense of tension and drama! Titles include "La Mort De L'Instituteur", "Theme De Gerbier", "20 Octobre 1942", "La Lettre Anonomye", "Generique Debut", and "La Planque". LP, Vinyl record album

Al Di MeolaLand Of The Midnight Sun ... LP
Columbia, 1976. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A real 70s standout from guitarist Al Di Meola – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of most of his albums from the decade! The record's one that broke Al's talents out to so many different groups – yet never in a way that waters down his sound, nor dims his genius for a solo. Al plays a host of guitars – electric, and both six and 12 string acoustic – the latter of which are especially beautiful, and handled in a balance between European virtuoso modes, and some of the more rhythmic elements of the American fusion scene. Speaking of fusion, the other players on the date really help set the tone – Chick Corea on keyboards and piano, Barry Miles on Fender Rhodes and mini-moog, Stanley Clarke on bass, and both Steve Gadd and Lenny White on drums – each setting a different pace when they appear. Titles include "The Wizard", "Suite Golden Dawn", "Short Tales Of The Black Forest", and "Land Of The Midnight Sun". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ DoorsLA Woman (50th anniversary deluxe edition – 180 gram LP & 3CD set – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Elektra, 1971. New Copy LP & 3CD set ... $76.99 79.98
Maybe one of our favorite Doors records of all time – if only for the long Fender Rhodes solo by Ray Manzarek on the album's final track, "Riders On The Storm"! Yet the whole album is pretty darn great, too – the last to feature Jim Morrison, who would leave the planet shortly after the album was released! There's a looser, more mature feel to the whole record – still lots of the territory the group had explored on previous albums, but also maybe more relaxed in the studio – knowing when to go for a hook when needed, but also letting some of the tunes really find themselves too. Titles include the hits "Riders On The Storm", "LA Woman", and "Love Her Madly" – plus "The Changeling", "Been Down So Long", "Cars Hiss By My Window", "The WASP", "L'America", and "Hyacinth House". This massive package features a new mix of the album by engineer Bruce Botnick, plus over two hours of never-heard material from the original sessions – all packaged up in a really wonderful design! Creation/Cherry Red (UK), 1987. New Copy ... About February 10, 2022
A gem of a record from Felt – one that has them complicating the sound they first brought to the Creation Records label – stretching out some of the songs a bit, and working with art rock legend Mayo Thompson of the Red Krayola in the production booth! The use of organ continues to be wonderfully strong – really giving the group a punctuation to their songs that their earlier material never had – but there's also still that great sense of overall sound that always made them so unique, and which works perfectly for the creative songwriting talents of Lawrence. Tracks include "Declaration" "Silver Plane", "She Lives By The Castle", "Stained Glass Windows In The Sky", "Riding On The Equator", "Dark Red Birds". CD

Four TetNew Energy ... LP
Text, 2017. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $21.99
Some of the lushest, most melodic material from Four Tet yet – straight up beautiful for the most part – and a pretty strong contender for his best to date! He's blending electronics and more natural sounds in ways that aren't out of character given his past work, but the title is wholly appropriate. Up to this point, he's so fully embraced creative evolution, it's gratifying to hear a Four Tet record in which he brings in bits of the styles he's worked on past efforts with a new energy and fresh life. It'll roll from almost beatless mixes of electronic atmosphere and natural sounds on one track, to beats-centric and spacey on the next, but it gels all the way through, all parts of a hypnotic whole. Includes "Alap", "Two Thousand Seventeen", "LA Trance", "Tremper", "Lush", "You Are Loved", "10 Midi", "Daughter", and "Planet". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Michael FranksArt Of Tea ... LP
Reprise, 1976. Sealed ... Just Sold Out!
A seminal classic from Michael Franks – one of those records that's almost a whole genre unto itself, and which set a whole new tone for the male voice in American music! The style here is light and jazzy – almost an evolution of modes first begun by Kenny Rankin, and served up here with a similarly compressed production style that really brings out the jazz in the instrumentation. Players include Michael Brecker, Joe Sample, Larry Carlton, and David Sanborn – all sounding great with a bit of added strings from Nick DeCaro. But the real star of the set is clearly Franks – whose light vocals and creative lyrics sound wonderful next to the electric piano on the set. Titles include "Eggplant", "Monkey See Monkey Do", "Jive", "Mr Blue", "Popsicle Toes", "St Elmos Fire", "I Don't Know Why I'm So Happy I'm Sad", and "Sometimes I Just Forget To Smile". Mort GarsonElectronic Hair Pieces ... CD
A&M/Fifth Dimension (Germany), 1969. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
A fantastic moog-based take on the music from Hair – a wonderful confluence of two of the grooviest musical trends of the late 60s! Mort Garson had his hand in plenty of other great moog-related projects from the period – like the Wozard Of Iz, the Lucifer/Black Mass album, and Ataraxia – and here, he steps out in another great mode – using spare early electronic music styles to freak out on the original tunes by Galt MacDermot – all at a level that's very different than some of the other instrumental records using the same tunes. Mort keeps things playful, but also really focused on the best elements of the songs – and given that Hair was performed on stages all around the planet in the late 60s, the whole thing feels as if the revue might have traveled to Venus on tour! Titles include "Frank Mills", "Good Morning Sunshine", "Easy To Be Hard", "Hair", "Walking In Space", and "Three Five Zero Zero". CD

Astrud GilbertoI Haven't Got Anything Better To Do ... CD
Verve (Japan), 1969. New Copy ... $13.99
One of the darkest albums ever recorded by Astrud Gilberto – her 60s last session for Verve Records, and a batch of beautifully moody tunes throughout! Arrangements are by Albert Gorgoni, who'd handled Gilberto's previous September 69 album – but the style here is a bit mellower, a bit sadder – touched with more adult themes of love, life, and loss – and very much in keeping with Astrud's tear-stained image on the cover! There's a sound here that almost mixes Gilberto's earlier bossa with the more baroque modes of Scott Walker at the end of the 60s – and as with Scott Walker's classic solo sets, the album shows a side of Astrud's talents that we never would have expected a few years earlier! Titles include "Wailing Of The Willow", "Where's The Love", "Wee Small Hours", "If", "Without Him", "Trains & Boats & Planes", "The Sea Is My Soil", and "Didn't We?". CD

A groundbreaking project from French pianist Jef Gilson – an artist who'd already made some incredible records in the 60s, but really knocked it out of the park here – by collaborating with a host of musicians from Madagascar! The set mixes Gilson's strong ear for arrangement with these wonderful twists and turns in both the rhythms, and in the phrasing of the horns – a lineup that includes Georges Rahoerson on soprano sax, Roland De Comarmond on baritone, Alain Razafinohatra on alto, and Serge Rahoerson and Joel Rakotomamonjyh on tenors – working alongside Gilson on piano and some balafon-like use of xylophone! The tracks are filled with modal changes – moving even more strongly when the group brings in some added percussion – and on one track, Gilson plays some very cool Hohner electric piano too. Titles include a remake of "The Creator Has A Master Plan" – plus "Avaradoha", "Chant Inca", "Sodina", and "Malagasy". CD

Jerry GoldsmithGoldsmith At 20th Vol 2 – The Detective/Flim Flam Man ... CD
La La Land, 1967. New Copy ... $19.99
A pair of overlooked Jerry Goldsmith soundtracks – back to back on a single CD! First up is The Detective – a soundtrack we've been trying to find for years – given the way the music works perfectly in the surprisingly dark film! Goldsmith uses lots of jazzy tones in his scoring – especially trumpet lines – which works wonderfully not just for the urban location of the narrative, but to underscore the really melancholy mood of the whole movie – one of those Bullitt-era cop stories that shows the overwhelming effect of crime upon the outlook of a detective. There's a few weird touches in the mix – some swirling, almost watery moments – and titles include "A New Love", "A Family Affair", "Beach Scene", "Joe", "Night Talk", "The Safe Cracker", and "The Ball Game". The Flim Flam Man was recorded right around the same time, but is quite different – more rural than urban, with American themes that come through in the use of harmonica, woodwinds, and a bit of banjo and guitar – almost a Copland-esque fantasy of the country, but with warmer touches that both belie the comedic nature of the film, and the sensitivity that Goldsmith can bring to any sort of setting. CD features 16 tracks from the film – including "Stolen Property", "A Little Inspiration", "The Flim Flam Man", "A Good Trick/No Rest For The Wicked", "Curley's Plan", and "The Waiting Game". CD

A seminal jazz funk session of the 70s – Herbie Hancock's legendary meeting with The Headhunters, and a killer batch of tunes that really gave the combo their name! Herbie's playing a wide range of keys here – including Fender Rhodes, clavinet, and Arp – but almost even better is the work from the rest of the group – including Bennie Maupin on soprano and tenor sax, Paul Jackson on bass, Harvey Mason on drums, and Bill Summers on percussion! The earthier elements of the rhythm players really keep Herbie on track – bringing him back to the planet from previous trips into space, and helping him hit an all-solid, all-righteous funky groove! Titles include a great remake of "Watermelon Man", the classic original recording of "Chameleon", and the cuts "Vein Melter" and "Sly" – all nice and long! CD

There's certainly some of the freer, more improvised moments on the record that you'd expect from Hooker – but there's also these wonderfully tuneful passages, too – work that draws from all sorts of warmly crafted sounds from other group members – a lineup that features Mara Rosenbloom and Mark Hennen on piano, Jimmy Lopez on percussion, Charles Compo on flute, Stephen Gauci and Sarah Manning on saxes, and Jal Rohm Parker Wells on bass. There's also a bit of electronics from Theo Woodward – an element that's used sparingly, but in really great ways – and at the core, Hooker is still very much in charge of the proceedings, as you can feel when he really gets going on the kit. A great set from the Chicago scene – one recorded in the early 80s, but put together with a really timeless sound overall! The album's a rediscovery of tenorist Eddie Johnson – a player who'd been away from music for part of the 70s, but who returns beautifully here with a raspy tenor sound that would make labelmate Von Freeman proud. The session is nicely laidback – recorded with trumpet from Paul Serrano and piano from John Young – very relaxed and open, in the sort of mode that really lets a Chicago tenorist take off – which Johnson does, and wonderfully, on tunes that include "Blue Star", "The Choice", "Self Portrait", "Indian Summer", and "Splanky". A fantastic collaboration between two contemporary legends in French music – both artists we love on their own, but who maybe sound even more amazing here together! We've loved and stocked records by the Liminanas for years – a duo who have a great way of reviving an older style of French pop, infusing it with contemporary psychedelic styles, and coming up with music that can easily bridge the barriers of nation and language! And although Laurent Garnier is maybe a bit more of a mainstream star in French music, he's right at home here – adding this great frontman presence to the duo, and giving things even more focus than before – all with sounds and styles that take the best essence of the generation of Serge Gainsbourg and Jacques Dutronc, and bring things well into the 21st Century. Moggi (Piero Umiliani)Double Face ... LP
Overdrive (Italy), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
The cover here looks a bit 80s, but the sound of half the record is much more rich and organic – and maybe more in the kind of mode you'd know from the film score work of Piero Umiliani – who's working here under his Moggi pseudonym! Side one is orchestral – and most tracks have a standout instrument in the lead – sometimes acoustic piano, sometimes a trumpet – mixed with larger orchestrations that often have this great languid feel – almost like the aftermath of a sex-drenched steamy summer afternoon – but Italian-style, of course! Side two features the same tunes, but done completely electronically – with all these cool analogue elements that really live up to Umiliani's work in that realm – but again, with slinky sexy modes that are totally great. Titles include "Fata Morgana", 'Planetario", "Ricorrenza", "La Ballata Del Mare Salato", and "Nel Giardino Fantastico" – each done in an orchestral and electronic version! LP, Vinyl record album

Sweet! One of the harder Scratch efforts to track down over the years, one we're always glad to come across! Recorded in the late 70s, when his wigged out follies at the Black Ark had reached their peak –though there's a bit of debate over whether these tracks were actually recorded at the Black Ark – this is one of the first albums issued after the studio burned to the ground. Whichever side of the argument you fall on, you can't argue with the tracks on this one: spare instrumental Perry-isms with jaunty guitar, loping syncopated drums and bouncing bass, plus Tommy McCook's horn. Titles include "Cloak & Dagger", "Hail Stone", "Musical Transplant", "Liquid Serenade", "Iron Claw", "Rude Walking", "Cave Man Skank", "Pe We Special" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Rich PerryHappy Destiny ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2021. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
Darkly moody sounds from Rich Perry – a tenorist who's got a great way of sliding from note to note, often with energy that almost feels effortless, but which also has a nice sort of tension along the way! This quality is never too overstated – as it might have been in saxophonists from a decade or two back – and instead, it's maybe this sort of secret voice that comes from the way that Perry puts things together, and which seems to hint at an even deeper current his work, one that bears plenty of repeated listenings to discern. The rest of the group is very well-matched too – Gary Versace on piano, Jay Anderson on bass, and John Riley on drums – working their way through original Perry compositions that include "Iron Buddha", "Everything Hurts", "Plant Based", "Happy Destiny", "Luft", "Recoleta", "Rebellion Dawgs", and "Long Dark Spring". Placebo/Sadi Quartet/Rene ThomasLive In Bruxelles – Jazz In Belgium – Three Days In April (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $24.99
Rare work from the legendary funky group Placebo – recorded live here in a set that also features contributions from two other great Belgian acts too! Placebo dominate the first half of the record – and turn in a hard-driving performance that's heavy on Fender Rhodes from the legendary Marc Moulin – who has this way of playing that makes his keyboard lines all nice and chunky, and a perfect fit for the funky drums and tight horns on the tunes! The group's a septet, with two trumpets, two saxes, bass, and drums – all kicking out a great groove for the Rhodes, on tunes that include "Showbiz Suite", "Only Nineteen", and "Planes". Next up is strongly soulful work from vibist Fats Sadi – a player you might know from his 60s work on MPS and in the Clarke Boland Big Band – sounding great here in a quartet mode, with piano, bass and drums – ringing out out strongly on tunes that include "Burgos", "Gigi's Pad", and "Gospel Time". Last up is guitarist Rene Thomas – a player whose best-known work is from the 50s Parisian scene. Rene still sounds great here – and actually plays with a harder tone and more freewheeling vibe – in a trio with bass and drums, on the titles "Blue Tempo", "My Wife Maria", and "Chega Da Saudade". Sun RaContinuation (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Saturn/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1963. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
Mindblowing music from Sun Ra & The Arkestra – sounds recorded during the same marathon session that gave the world the records Other Planes Of There, When Sun Comes Out, and When Angels Speak Of Love – but titles that are much more obscure overall! The initial release of the material featured very misleading notes, but the true details of the session are even more impressive – as Ra plays a variety of unusual instruments alongside piano – including the piano strings, space organ, and clavioline – alongside some sublime straight horn work from John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on alto and oboe, Pat Patrick on baritone, Danny Davis on alto and clarinet, Walter Miller on trumpet, Robert Cummings on bass clarinet, and Ali Hasaan on trombone! The lineup here has that raw power the Arkestra first unleashed after their initial move to New York – almost a sense of new freedom in the new environment – even at a time when they weren't clicking on a financial level, but still continued to push forward with new ideas in music! Some passages have this great approach that links the cosmic ideas of the Arkestra with older traditions of jazz soloing – while others reflect the growing concern of the group with new textures and sounds – making for some very impressive elements on both the horns and percussion. The group is completed by Ronnie Boykins on bass, Art Jenkins on space voice and percussion, and Tommy Hunter on drums, percussion, and some mighty nice reverb – and titles include "Biosphere Blues", "Intergalactic Research", "Earth Primitive Earth", "New Planet", and "Continuation To Jupiter Festival". Beautiful 2CD reissue features sublime sounds from the original tapes, remastered – plus a full bonus CD of unreleased tracks that include "Blue York", "Conversation Of The Universe", "Red Planet Mars", "Cosmic Rays/Next Stop Mars", "The Myth", "Meteor Shower", "Infinity", "The Beginning Of", and "Endlessness". Sun RaHorizon ... LP
Saturn/Strut (UK), 1971. New Copy ... $22.99 23.99
An amazing live date from Sun Ra & The Arkestra – recorded in Cairo in 1971, with a very transcendent sound overall! Ra and the group are clearly inspired to be working in the shadow of the pyramids – and their music sometimes has Eastern overtones, a bit in the manner of Salah Ragab – their associate in Egypt – yet at other times, things get quite outside and noisy too! The keyboards are especially wonderful – as Ray plays "tiger organ" and moog, in addition to conventional piano – adding in the electronics with really spacey tones that really push the limits of the music. And some of the reeds really help shape the sound of the songs too – stark and soulful at key moments, but also forceful in formation at others – played by John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on flute and alto, Danny Thompson on baritone and flute, Kwame Hadi on trumpet, Danny Davis on flute and alto, Larry Northington on alto, Eloe Omoe on bass clarinet . The group comes together for a tight reading of "Space Is The Place" – and other titles include "3rd Planet", "Horizon", "Starwatchers", and "Shadow World". LP, Vinyl record album

Red KrayolaParable Of Arable Land (2CD deluxe edition) ... CD
International Artists/Snapper (UK), 1966. New Copy 2CD ... $9.99 15.98
The classic first album of avant noise and psych from the Texas underground, featuring seminal early work by Mayo Thompson, and a mind-blasting set of tracks that mixes straight songs with the group's trademark "free form freak outs". Essential to anyone with even the slightest affinity for the true psychedelic 60s – and especially so for true lovers of the influential psych forbears! Titles of the songs include "Hurricane Fighter Plane", "Transparent Radition" (an all-time classic), "War Sucks", "Former Reflections Enduring Doubt", and "Pink Stainless Tail" – and each track is separated by a freakout! This great 2011 2CD deluxe edition was remastered by Sonic Boom of Spaceman 3 – featuring the full stereo and mono versions (first time reissue of the latter) – plus a half dozen bonus tracks – demos, alternate takes and more. The packaging is deluxe, too – with 16 pages of notes and previously unseen images. CD

RoedeliusDurch Die Wuste ... CD
Sky/Bureau B (Germany), 1976/1978. Used ... $14.99
Masterful late 70s proggy grooves from Cluster's Hans-Joachim Roedelius – his first solo album, and wonderful, unpredictable journey in changing dynamics! Even the tunes with instrumentation that seems like standard rock materials of guitar, bass, drums and keyboards of wild textures coming from the keys, and echoey bits of sonic errata to give some otherworldly sounds, but have a gritty, grooving bottom end – and other tunes have a sparely haunting sound to them. Just great stuff, certainly necessary for Cluster, but worth the while of anyone with an ear for proggy soundscapes! Players include Jose Christo, Konrad Plank and Moebius. Titles include "Am Rockzipfel", "Dutrch Die Wuste", "Johannelust", "Glaubersalz", "Mr Livingstone I Suppose" and "Regenmacher". CD

Viejas Raices (Jorge Lopez Ruiz & Pocho Lapouble)Viejas Raices De Las Colonias del Rio De La Plata ... CD
Trova/Altercat (Germany), 1976. New Copy ... $16.99
One of the coolest records we've ever heard from this legendary Argentine pianist – a set that has Jorge Lopez Ruiz playing lots of Fender Rhodes, and mixing it in with both rootsy Latin percussion and a number of other keyboards too! The set's almost a South American version of some of Herbie Hancock's work with the Headhunters – with more traditional percussion passages in the mix, but blended with sounds that include Arp and mini-moog too – which gives the whole thing a criss-crossing vibe that alternates from the surface of the planet to the deeper ranges of the cosmos! Ruiz is wonderful throughout – often very spacious, in a thoughtful way that only makes each note have more power – and titles include "La Hora De La Sed Maldita", "Eterna Prescencia", "Mira Tu", "El Viaje De Dumpty", "Balewada", and "Para Nostros Solamente". Gil Scott-HeronFree Will (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... $22.99 26.99
A really tremendous album from the legendary Gil Scott-Heron – and a set that stands as one of his greatest statements from the 70s! The record is a wonderful example of Gil's work in two different styles – sweet mellow jazzy soul, and harder heavier protest poetry – the latter from his roots as a writer in touch with the streets, and the former part of a brilliant new direction that he was taking on the Flying Dutchman label. Side one features classic jazzy tracks recorded with Brian Jackson – like "Free Will", "The Middle Of Your Days", "Speed Kills", and "Did You Hear What They Said?". Side two moves over to a much sparer sound – and has Gil reciting some of his poetry with very heavy percussion, and a very righteous approach. The wisdom and knowledge of those pieces is a perfect example of the kinds of issues that were haunting black America in the early 70s – especially on the tracks "No Knock", "The King Alfred Plan", and "Sex Education: Ghetto Style". Sean PriceSongs In The Key Of Price (colored vinyl) ... LP
Ruck Down, 2015. New Copy 2LP ... $23.99 24.98
A sharp, sprawling mixtape styled set from the dearly departed Sean Price – who cemented his legend as one of the mighty Boot Camp Click and as half of the Heltah Skeltah duo back in the 90s, before becoming a masterful solo presence and defining voice of the 2000s underground. Price passed away just a couple weeks shy of Songs In The Key Of Price's 2015 release, and true to form, it's pretty much rock solid all the way. Includes "Figure More" feat Illa Ghee, "SEAN", "Hot Breath", "Brazil", "Breeze", "Top Tier", "Psycho Killa", "RNS", "Planet Apes", "Kurt Rambis", "Soul Perfect" feat Illa Ghee, "El Raheim" feat RIM, "4 No Reason", "N****rific", "Bobby McBarz" feat Ike Eyes and more. ✨✧ Seed EnsembleDriftglass ... LP
Jazz Refreshed (UK), 2019. New Copy 2LP ... $28.99 32.99
A fantastic album by this up-and-coming spiritual group from London – an ensemble led by alto saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi, but definitely a unified group effort all the way through! Konishi composed all the music – and a few songs feature words by Langston Hughes – and the rises with a proud, vibrant spirit right from the start – full of bold modal rhythms, and risen to the heavens on a mix of two trumpets, tenor, trombone, and tuba – plus piano, Fender Rhodes, and some mighty nice bass and drums. All tracks are long, and very individual – not slavish spiritual jazz numbers trying to recapture the past – but instead a very bright vision for tomorrow. Titles include "Afronaut", "Wake (For Grenfell)", "Mirrors", "Interplanetary Migration", "The Dreamkeeper", and "The Darkies". LP, Vinyl record album

Takeshi ShibuyaCook Note (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $24.99
A sweet trio set from Japanese pianist Takeshi Shibuya – a player who can sometimes have the angular qualities of the Thelonious Monk generation, but who also rivals some of the warmth of players like Kenny Barron or Tommy Flanagan – especially on their own recordings in Japan! There's a nicely vibrant quality to the way the piano is captured – a bit like the sound of a trio date on Three Blind Mice – and the group features equally strong work on bass from Tamio Kawabata and on drums from Shoichi Miyazawa – both of whom seem to follow Shibuya's lead first, then fall into a groove. Titles include the originals "Cook Out", "My Old Dream", and "Shadow & Shade" – plus versions of "Solider In The Rain", "I Didn't Know About You", and "Ode To A Potato Plant". CD

William StuckeyLove Of Mine (with bonus track) ... CD
Symplex/Athens Of The North (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
A rare set issued on a tiny label from Arkansas – but a set that's got all the charm, poise, and sparkle of some of the best deep soul on late 70s Columbia Records! Stuckey's got a touch of southern soul in his voice, with a sweet cracking sound – and that honest approach is mixed with some warmer modern soul arrangements – a bit like the style of some of the best Tyrone Davis or Johnnie Taylor records from the time! The blend of southern and modern is wonderful – and handled with a sense of care that really makes you think that the whole thing was done at one of the best studios out on the coast – rather than some tiny outpost west of the Mississippi. A great record – one of those cases where the rarity is matched by the quality – on titles that include "I've Got Plans For You", "Love Of Mine", "If You Want To", "Hold Me Close", and "The First Time". Also features the previously unissued "Just Around The Corner". CD
