An incredible book put together with the Academy of Motion Pictures film museum – and one that's much richer than anything you'd expect to find in the gift shop! The book is a beautiful balance of academic writing, history, and countless images – with an initial set of essays on black cinema, done by the editors – followed by specific case studies on black home movies, Hattie McDaniel, Josephine Baker, Spectatorship & The Black Press, James Baldwin, and William Greaves – and all sections are lavishly illustrated with posters, photographs, film stills, and other items that we'd never see otherwise. The book continues with interviews with directors who include Julie Dash, Barry Jenkins, and Charles Burnett; includes a long filmography of black independent films, a chronology of key moments in black cinema from 1895 to 1971; and has a selection of portraits of famous stars as well. The hardcover book is full color throughout, very heavy, oversized, and over 300 pages. Book
The image on the cover is just the tip of the iceberg – as this lovely book really dives into the legacy of artist Nicholas Krushenick – a unique painter who somehow manages to combine abstract, minimalist, and pop art modes – all at a level that almost seems to prefigure street art and other creations of the Keith Haring generation! Most of the paintings were done in the 60s and early 70s, with revolutionary use of black line and flat color – and the book also features some images from the early 80s as well, interspersed with a few essays on Krushenick, and a vintage interview from 1968. The huge book is almost 300 pages, filled with full color images, and very heavy! Book
A huge overview of the work of artist Laurie Simmons – a photographer who's best known for working in miniature and conflicting spatial scales – but one who's also presented here with a variety of projects from across her career! The big/little shots are in great array here – as Simmons works with small figures and dollhouse furniture to create all these really cool, very unsettling scenes that play with space and social expectations. But there's also lots more along the way – photographic portraits, collages, and even some strange sequences with dolls – all presented in this massive hardcover book with full color images throughout – 260 pages, with some essays on the artist's work as well. Book
A really cool book, and one that looks at the phenomenon of 3D in two different ways – hence the title! The book comes with two sets of viewers – one with thick, clear magnifying lenses, to be used with old stereographic photographs – the other with one red and one blue lens, to view the later blue/red split process 3D photos and drawings! As you can imagine, the book is filled with examples of images in both styles, which you can use the viewers to enjoy – and the publication also has a huge amount of information and history – a timeline of 3D styles and creations, words on the science, and lots of other essays too – all done for the original exhibition of the materials at LACMA. Book is oversize, hardcover, full color, and over 200 pages. Book
Dozens of interviews with key figures in the art world over the past four decades – all done by Michael Auping, in a way that really seems to quickly get to the heart of what makes the work of his subjects so special! This is hardly the usual interview book, as the volume is oversize, and done in conjunction with a museum exhibit – so it has art book presentation, with large images of the work of most of the interviewees – an all-star list that includes Bruce Naumann, Robert Duncan, Frank Stella, Agnes Martin, Robert Creeley, Julian Schnabel, Kara Walker, Morton Feldman, Ed Ruscha, Anselm Keifer, and many others. As you can see, there's a few composers and writers in the mix, and Auping handles those equally well – and the book is very heavy, hardcover, 340 pages, and filled with images in color and black and white!
