Current jazz, but with a classic 60s style – all given an extra hip twist from the great Nicola Conte! Idea 6 are one of the greatest non-Schema groups to come from Italy in many many years – a combo whose sound and energy recall the best Italian modal grooves of years back! Conte's obviously inspired by that sound, so his work here with Idea 6 makes a perfect fit – one that pushes the already-great "Minor Mood" into even groovier dancefloor jazz territory! Bossa jazz, done Italian style – handled here by two wonderful leaders in a groove that's as laidback as it is soulful! Tenorist Gianno Basso sounds beautiful here – gliding gracefully across flowing rhythms that offer a really unique take on the bossa – quite spacious at points, and with a lightness that's quite fresh – not like any other modern bossa jazz dates we can think of, thanks to the talents of arranger Riccardo Biseo, who also plays piano on the set. The guitar of Irio De Paula has a sharpish edge, even when skipping along the grooves – a rasp that brings even more humanity into the record next to Basso's tenor. The most spiritual session we've heard in this recent great run from the Deja Vu label – a set that's filled with Impulse Records-like energy – including lots of modal moments and spiritual solos! The lineup features Max Ionata on tenor sax – a player we don't know at all, but one who really has a great way of blowing these bold, well-formed lines – certainly with a touch of Coltrane in the mix, but very much his own player too. The great Roberto Tarenzi is on piano – playing these wonderful rhythms that almost top his own album on Deja Vu – and other players include Dario Rosciglione on bass and Marcello Di Leonardo on drums. A cool little combo who definitely live up to their name – the a soulful quartet from the Italian scene, joined here by up-and-coming alto player Mattia Cigalini! The album's got a soaring, joyous sort of groove – one that's firmly rooted in early 60s soul jazz, and tagged beautifully by the album's title reading of Eddie Vinson's excellent "Arriving Soon" – a cut originally recorded with Cannnonball Adderley during the early 60s Riverside years, and a perfect blend of hardbop and deeper jazz spirits! Nothing too mad from reedman John Klemmer – but a set that nicely continues that spacey sound that Klemmer first created at Impulse Records, then moved into some warmer, more soulful territory on records like this! Klemmer's still got an incredibly strong sound on tenor – rich and full, and never held back at all – nor prone to some of the more gimmicky flourishes of some of his mainstream contemporaries – and the setting is never too slick or overdone, which seems to suit John just right! Keyboards work nicely in a mellow, spaced-out groove – and Klemmer crackles these effortless lines out in space – of the soulful style we first fell in love with on his earliest work for Chess. The set features guitar from John Tropea, keyboards from Don Grusin, and drums from Harvey Mason – and Klemmer even vocalizes a bit – in a surprisingly strong style for the music. An amazing look at the psychedelic scene in late 60s Memphis – music that's really mindblowing for the time, yet which often never got its due – given the stronger mainstream focus on Memphis as a hub for blues and soul! (In other words, had any of these cats hit the Sunset Strip in the late 60s, they would have been huge!) Given that Memphis already had a strong studio scene in place – where some of these musicians worked on other sessions – the recordings here are incredibly advanced – often full of cool production techniques and other little twists and turns – all elements that take already-great fuzzy, freaky, hairy rock and roll – and turn it into something even more incredible by the time it's caught on tape! Maynard's got some great help on this session – stripping things down and working with a group of west coast fusion players led by Stanley Clarke! A totally great package – one that brings together some of the coolest cuts ever from the early solo years of Weldon Irvine! There's not really a Nashville sound to the record – at least not in country music terms – and if anything, the record really reminds us of the way that some older New York big bands shifted up their groove during the disco generation – blending older jazz and Latin modes with elements more aimed at a contemporary dancefloor – including groovier rhythms, added strings, and female chorus vocals! Stan the Man's at the top of his game here – working with full backings from Wade Marcus, but still rich and creative on his solos! There's few other players who can match Turrentine in this setting – as Stan always steps out from the larger arrangements and brings his best to the forefront – blowing with a sense of tone and invention that's often missing on similar albums from the time. It would be easy to let the Turrentine tenor get caught up in schmaltzy smooth jazz cliches, but Stanley's as inventive here as on his best CTI work – really blowing up a storm, even in the mellower numbers – and showing that there was still plenty of room to be creative in jazz, even on a larger set like this. Sweet jazzy grooves from this hip Italian duo – Enzo & Gianni Lo Greco, who've also recorded as Quintetto Lo Greco for Schema Records! The sound here is definitely in a Schema groove – lots of jazzy instrumentation on piano, sax, trumpet, and trombone – very much in the best 60s Italian jazz mode, but kicked up just a bit with some rhythms aimed at the dancefloor – never too over the top, and all acoustic all the way through – a club jazz groove that's perfect for anyone who also digs work on labels like DejaVu or Ricky Tick!
