Crosby Stills Nash & YoungDeja Vu ... CD
Atlantic, 1970. Used ... $2.99
One of those records that was a classic from the moment it was first released – the legendary second effort from the trio of David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash – with added bonus of Neil Young in the mix, which gives the whole thing a current of darkness that's completely mindblowing – especially in comparison to the harmonies of the quartet! These aren't the vocal patterns of the Sunshine Pop generation of a few years before – and CSNY find a way to capture all the darkness of the fading light of the 60s, while finding a special space for more thoughtful, sensitive sounds that never would have gotten a chance a few years before. Every track's a classic – and titles include "Carry On", "Our House", "Almost Cut My Hair", "Deja Vu", "Country Girl", "Everybody I Love You", "Woodstock", and "Teach Your Children". CD

Robson Jorge & Lincoln OlivettiDeja Vu EP ... LP
Selva (Brazil), Mid 80s. New Copy ... $27.99 29.99
Never-issued work from these two giants of Brazilian soul – excellent material that really should have seen release back in the day, but which is maybe even more of a treasure presented here at long last! The set's got a warm modern soul glow – the sort of 80s material that Marcos Valle was giving the world at the same time too – lots of rhythms learned from boogie, but given a more sophisticated spin, and just the right touch of jazzy instrumentation – with plenty of sweet keyboards, bouncing basslines, and great vocals throughout. Titles include "Sem Essa", "Batebca", "Dance Baby", "You", and "Suspira". LP, Vinyl record album

Arista/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 12 CDs ... $56.99 59.99
A huge run of music from the legendary Dionne Warwick – all of it very different than her early work with Burt Bacharach, and brought together as a strong testament to her ability to change and grow over the years! Although Dionne started as a sweeter singer in the 60s, and had a few great Warner Brothers moments during the 70s – she really reemerged strongly on Arista at the end of that decade – thanks to strong help from a label that really knew what to do with a top-shelf female singer, and help them move past some of the pop and disco pitfalls that brought down some of their contemporaries in the decade! Warwick really returned to the American consciousness with these records, then kept on growing and maturing – really able to shift through a range of styles as the 80s moved into the 90s, even ending up with a bit of jazz in the mix – as you'll hear on this long run of records. The box set features twelve full albums, a great value for the price – records that include Dionne, No Night So Long, Hot Live & Otherwise, Friends In Love, Heartbreaker, How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye, Finder Of Lost Loves, Friends, Reservations For Two, Sings Cole Porter, Friends Can Be Lovers, and Aquarela Do Brasil. Basso Valdambrini QuintetBasso Valdambrini Quintet (1959) (LP style sleeve) ... CD
Music/Deja Vu (Italy), 1959. Used Gatefold ... $24.99
A sharp-edged session of tremendous trumpet and tenor interplay – served up by the legendary quintet of Gianni Basso and Oscar Valdambrini! The album's got a sound that's as hip as it looks – a great approach to 50s modern jazz, done in a style that's equally influenced by west coast cool and east coast hardbop! Valdambrini's trumpet is beautifully measured throughout – with echoes of both Kenny Dorham and Chet Baker – offset by some deeper grooving on tenor from Basso, who plays with a strength and command that few American players of the time could match. Titles include "Come Out Wherever You Are", "Lo Struzzo Oscar", "Lotar", "Gone With The Wind", "Parlami D'Amore Mariu", and "Fan Tan". CD

Guido PistocchiSpring Time ... CD
Deja Vu (Italy), 2010. Used ... $11.99
A killer set from Italian trumpeter Guido Pistocchi – and one with a very specific old school vibe as well! Pistocchi's going for a 50s California jazz approach here, but one that's also focused on the contributions of Italian-American players Conte Candoli and Tony Fruscella – both of whom are referenced strongly in Guido's approach on his horn, and on the album's choice of tracks! Walter Ricci sings on a few numbers – echoing a bit of Chet Baker's old sound of the 50s – and other cuts are sparkling instrumentals, with Pistocchi on trumpet, Max Ionata on tenor, Gruno Cesselli on piano, Paolo Ghetti on bass, and Marcello Di Leonardo on drums. Title sinclude "Old Hat", "Macedonia", "Zizanie", "You Can't Go Home Again", "Some Day", and "I Can't Get Started". CD

✨✧ Idea 6Minor Mood (Nicola Conte rmx)/Metropoli (Panoptikum rmx) ... 12-inch
Deja Vu (Italy), 2006. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Current jazz, but with a classic 60s style – all given an extra hip twist from the great Nicola Conte! Idea 6 are one of the greatest non-Schema groups to come from Italy in many many years – a combo whose sound and energy recall the best Italian modal grooves of years back! Conte's obviously inspired by that sound, so his work here with Idea 6 makes a perfect fit – one that pushes the already-great "Minor Mood" into even groovier dancefloor jazz territory! Panoptikum are a bit more abstract on their remix of "Metropoli" – and compress some parts while expanding out others – yet they still manage to keep the basic vibe of the tune, which is a very catchy one! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Gianni Basso & Irio De PaulaRecado Bossa Nova ... LP
Deja Vu (Italy), 2009. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Bossa jazz, done Italian style – handled here by two wonderful leaders in a groove that's as laidback as it is soulful! Tenorist Gianno Basso sounds beautiful here – gliding gracefully across flowing rhythms that offer a really unique take on the bossa – quite spacious at points, and with a lightness that's quite fresh – not like any other modern bossa jazz dates we can think of, thanks to the talents of arranger Riccardo Biseo, who also plays piano on the set. The guitar of Irio De Paula has a sharpish edge, even when skipping along the grooves – a rasp that brings even more humanity into the record next to Basso's tenor. Titles include "Lamento", "Cartao De Visita", "Recado Bossa Nova", "Groovy Samba", "Blue Bossa", and "Quo Vadis Samba". Produced by Paolo Scotti. LP, Vinyl record album

The Exciting 6 here are the Basso-Valdambrini Sextet – one of Italy's hippest jazz combos of the 60s, heard here in a batch of groovers from the later half of the decade! The tracks are short, but they all pack plenty of punch – filled up with modal rhythms on piano, soaring horn parts on trumpet, tenor, and trombone – and grooving tremendously with a style that takes off from earlier Blue Note modes, but pushes the whole thing into the sounds of the European scene of the 60s! Players include Gianni Basso on tenor, Oscar Valdambrini on trumpet, Dino Piana on trombone, Giorgio Azzolino on bass, and Renato Sellani on piano – and titles include "Young Man", "Look Out", "Guernica", "Exotic", "Aura", "Leit Motiv", "Donna Lu", and "Nduma". Deja Vu (Italy), 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
Sweet grooves from this hip Italian combo – one who definitely dig all the best European jazz styles of the 60s – from modal, to bossa, to soul jazz and more! The lineup features tenor, trumpet, trombone, and a crack rhythm section – one that ensures that the album's got a solidly soulful grounding on the bottom, which further underscores the hip 60s vibe of the record. Production is by Paolo Scotti, who keeps things very firmly in the territory of his DejaVu projects, both old and new – and this album's one more reason why we're willing to spend a bit more for titles on the Norma Blu label! Gege Telesforo sings/scats on the titles "So Danco Samba" and "Sippin At Bells" – and other titles include "Work Song", "Soft Tick", "Tall Stories", "PMD", "Sincopato Blues", "Song For Sarah", and "Navarra". The lineup features Max Ionata on tenor sax – a player we don't know at all, but one who really has a great way of blowing these bold, well-formed lines – certainly with a touch of Coltrane in the mix, but very much his own player too. The great Roberto Tarenzi is on piano – playing these wonderful rhythms that almost top his own album on Deja Vu – and other players include Dario Rosciglione on bass and Marcello Di Leonardo on drums. ✨✧ Soul 4 introducing Mattia CigaliniArriving Soon ... CD
Deja Vu (Italy), 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
A cool little combo who definitely live up to their name – the a soulful quartet from the Italian scene, joined here by up-and-coming alto player Mattia Cigalini! The album's got a soaring, joyous sort of groove – one that's firmly rooted in early 60s soul jazz, and tagged beautifully by the album's title reading of Eddie Vinson's excellent "Arriving Soon" – a cut originally recorded with Cannnonball Adderley during the early 60s Riverside years, and a perfect blend of hardbop and deeper jazz spirits! Cigalini's a hell of an alto player – working here with the depth and dexterity of most tenorists, a good reminder that the instrument can still get a heavy sound when in the hands of the right player. Other group members are top-shelf too – all key Italian players who include Fabrizio Bosso on trumpet, Andrea Pozza on piano, Riccardo Fioravanti on bass, and the legendary Tullio De Piscopo on drums. Titles include "Arriving Soon", "Bohemia After Dark", "Sambop", "Ciga(r) Smoke", "If You Believe", "Blue Minor", "New Delhi", and "Lisa". CD

Lamont DozierLove & Beauty (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Invictus/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... $10.99 14.99 About December 6, 2023 (delayed)
A massive album by Lamont Dozier – probably his best ever! Every cut's a winner, and the LP shines with a sharpness and tightness that's missing from some of Lamont's other LPs from the 70s. The songwriting is impeccable – and as the album progresses, you get that eerie "deja vu" feeling you can have when discovering a landmark work for the first time. There's a hint of funk in the mix, but the strongest point is the production – which bowls over the top with a mix of strings, piano, and Lamont's wonderfully honest vocals. Includes the wonderful soul anthem "Don't Leave Me", which comes up again in a very tight instrumental version – plus the tracks "The Picture Will Never Change", "Why Can't We Be Lovers", and "Slipping Away". Great all the way through, and a stunning bit of seventies soul that will have you returning again and again! CD features a massive 10 bonus tracks too – including "Superwoman", "Lady By Day", "I'm Gonna Hijack Ya", "Don't Leave Me Starvin For Your Love (parts 1 & 2)", "Why Can't We Be Lovers (single)", "Let's Get Together", "I'm So Glad (parts 1 & 2)", and "You Took Me From A World Outside". One of the most beautiful records to come out of the early 70s – a tremendous indie effort from a young Weldon Irvine! Irvine put this album together as sort of a musical "time capsule" of his generation – an effort to capture the era's thoughts, feelings, and emotions through a mix of music, vocals, and a few spoken bits – all woven together in a way that changes moods nicely, but always keeps the same righteously spiritual vibe! Weldon plays keys that are both electric and acoustic throughout – and he's joined by a very hip batch of players who include Jimmy Owens, Lenny White, Alex Blake, George Cables, and others – all working here in a very rough-edged and soulful mode. John KlemmerMagnificent Madness ... LP
Elektra, 1980. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Nothing too mad from reedman John Klemmer – but a set that nicely continues that spacey sound that Klemmer first created at Impulse Records, then moved into some warmer, more soulful territory on records like this! Klemmer's still got an incredibly strong sound on tenor – rich and full, and never held back at all – nor prone to some of the more gimmicky flourishes of some of his mainstream contemporaries – and the setting is never too slick or overdone, which seems to suit John just right! Keyboards work nicely in a mellow, spaced-out groove – and Klemmer crackles these effortless lines out in space – of the soulful style we first fell in love with on his earliest work for Chess. The set features guitar from John Tropea, keyboards from Don Grusin, and drums from Harvey Mason – and Klemmer even vocalizes a bit – in a surprisingly strong style for the music. Titles include "Magnificent Madness", "Deja Vu", "Lifesong", "Adventures In Paradise", "I Can't Help It", and "Don't Take Your Love Away". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousFeeling High – The Psychedelic Sound Of Memphis ... CD
Big Beat (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
An amazing look at the psychedelic scene in late 60s Memphis – music that's really mindblowing for the time, yet which often never got its due – given the stronger mainstream focus on Memphis as a hub for blues and soul! (In other words, had any of these cats hit the Sunset Strip in the late 60s, they would have been huge!) Given that Memphis already had a strong studio scene in place – where some of these musicians worked on other sessions – the recordings here are incredibly advanced – often full of cool production techniques and other little twists and turns – all elements that take already-great fuzzy, freaky, hairy rock and roll – and turn it into something even more incredible by the time it's caught on tape! Most of these names are new to our ears, and the package is definitely a historical treasure trove – as pleasing to our record collectors' sensibilities as the music is to our ears. Sound quality is excellent, and many numbers have not been issued before – titles that include "Eat Me Alive" and "We're In Town" by The Goatdancers, "Crazy Man's Woman" and "Shoo Shoo Shoo Fly" by Greg McCarley, "Blue Music Box" by Changin Tymes, "For Your Love" by the Honey Jug, "Rockin In The Same Old Boat" by Triple X, "Deja Vu" by Judy Bramlett, "Come On Along & Dream" by The Poor Little Rich Kids, "Flying Horse Of Louisiana" by Knowbody Else, "Dancing Girl" by The 1st Century, and "Ticket To Ride" by Mother Roses – plus an advertisement for The Goatdancers too! Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/1980s. New Copy 3CD ... $28.99 34.99
A killer look at one of our favorite scenes in the UK in the punk years and beyond – the city of Leeds, home to a surprising amount of really fantastic groups – some of whom were initially united in a scene-based style, many more who later exploded in a range of very groovy modes that were all their own! The title's taken from a song by The Mekons – back when they shared a lot with Gang Of Four – and in addition to those two great groups, the package features material by a startling array of others – groups who really run the gamut once the 80s moves on – in a lineup that includes Cassandra Complex, Three Johns, Vicious Pink, Deja Vu, The Hollow Men, Wedding Present, The Mission, Son Of Sam, Age Of Chance, Edsel Auctioneer, Pale Saints, Snapdragons, Sisters Of Mercy, Soft Cell, Girls At Our Best, Scritti Politti, The Neats, Jerks, and many others. As you'll guess from the groups, there's a great range of punk, indie, and industrial material here – plus some noisy bits as well – and the whole thing's presented with a great booklet of notes on everyone included, and the scene in Leeds as well. ✨✧ Weldon IrvineTime Capsule EP (10 inch LP) ... LP
P-Vine (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A totally great package – one that brings together some of the coolest cuts ever from the early solo years of Weldon Irvine! Side one of the record features two takes on his great "Deja Vu" – the initial short version, which has more of a take on the catchy jazzy lyrics – and the longer version, which runs for almost ten minutes, and has more jazzy solo work! The flipside features the totally wonderful "Feelin Mellow" – a cut with a few singers working next to Weldon's electric piano lines, giving the whole thing a very righteous vibe – which is carried through on the cool "Watergate Don't Bug Me" – complete with melodica from Weldon, Fender Rhodes from George Cables, and some cool extemporaneous lyrics about Watergate! ✨✧ Bill Pursell & The Nashville Sweat BandBill Pursell & The Nashville Sweat Band & Aides ... CD
Alston/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Funky big band work from Bill Pursell – a set that's got some of the disco charm you'd expect from the image on the cover – but one that also has some other jazzy elements too! There's not really a Nashville sound to the record – at least not in country music terms – and if anything, the record really reminds us of the way that some older New York big bands shifted up their groove during the disco generation – blending older jazz and Latin modes with elements more aimed at a contemporary dancefloor – including groovier rhythms, added strings, and female chorus vocals! Titles include "Sandwich Spread" – a nice original worth the price of the record alone – plus "Peter Piper Pumped His Pecks", "Deja Vu", "Now", "Every Day Of The Week", "Bump Me Baby", and "Hold My Hand When We're Going Home". ✨✧ Ray Goodman & BrownRay, Goodman, & Brown ... LP
Polydor, 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Sweet silky harmony soul from the trio of Harry Ray, Billy Brown, and Al Goodman – the group's first album under a new name – after some previous indie work as The Moments! The album's got the group really stepping up with a rich new sound – drawing on all the best elements of their New Jersey roots, but hitting harmonies that are even more sublime – and put together perfectly by Lou Toby's arrangements. This debut from the trio's a real classic – proof that the indie group soul sound can make it to the big time – and although the lyrics are a bit off-beat, but that's always part of the charm of the group. Titles include "The Way It Should Be", "Inside Of You", "Treat Her Right", "Deja Vu", "Another Day", and "Special Lady". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Reel PeopleLove 2 ... CD
Reel People (UK), 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The Reel People collective is back in action, and maybe sounding even better than on their first Love album – thanks to a sublime array of guest vocalists – including Eric Roberson, Raheem DeVaughn, Chante Cann, Paula, Michael Champion, and others! The vibe is great – uplifting and positive, with a style that's a nice change from both mainstream soul and club – that special sort of vibe we've always loved from the sort of underground work like this – which seems to be harder and harder to find as the years go on! In a world of stray digital cuts, we're even more grateful than ever for a full length set like this – as Reel People definitely deliver the goods, on titles that include "I Never Knew", "Save A Lil Love", "Everything's So Crazy", "If I Was Your Man", "Fly", "Deja Vu", "Dance In Her Eyes", and "Vibe". ✨✧ Stanley TurrentineInflation ... LP
Elektra, 1980. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Stan the Man's at the top of his game here – working with full backings from Wade Marcus, but still rich and creative on his solos! There's few other players who can match Turrentine in this setting – as Stan always steps out from the larger arrangements and brings his best to the forefront – blowing with a sense of tone and invention that's often missing on similar albums from the time. It would be easy to let the Turrentine tenor get caught up in schmaltzy smooth jazz cliches, but Stanley's as inventive here as on his best CTI work – really blowing up a storm, even in the mellower numbers – and showing that there was still plenty of room to be creative in jazz, even on a larger set like this. Titles include "Inflation", "Song For Donny", "Deja Vu", "Don't Misunderstand", "Ghana", and "Closer". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dionne WarwickDionne (Arista) ... LP
Arista, 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of those great 70s records that really reminds us that, way past Burt Bacharach, Dionne Warwick's a heck of a great soul singer! The album's a bit more polished than some of her other post-Scepter efforts from the decade – yet still comes off quite well, with Dionne really stretching out vocally – and bringing a lot more to the table than might be expected. There's a few uptempo cuts that are a bit off the mark, but Warwick really shines on the mellow and midtempo numbers. Titles include "Who What When Where Why", "All The Time", "In Your Eyes", "Feeling Old Feelings", "Deja Vu", "I'll Never Love This Way Again", and "After You". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousDejavuthosenervoustracks – Nervous Records NYC 1991 – 2003 ... CD
Susu (UK), 1990s/Early 2000s. Used 2 CDs ... $3.99 7.99
A massive batch of housey club grooves from the vaults of Nervous Records – which set up shop in the early 90s, and grew to become one of the busiest club groove generators of the post-house era! The bassy bounce is the most crucial elements, naturally, with that deeply propulsive bass and drum backbone set up hold the accented percussion and vampy vocals. Many of the tracks feature some nicely jazzy touches, too! Disc one of this double CD set features some of the label's better known numbers: "Feel It" by Niceguy Soulman, "Yeah" by Swing Kids, ""The Praise" by Sample Choir, "Caves Of Altimera" by E Man, "Let It Go" by Soul Brothers with Joi Cardwell and lots more! Disc two features a mix set by DJ Jon Cutler: "Reign Over Twilight" by Gigolo Supreme, "During Peak Hours" by Club Kids, "Rain" by Kerri Chandler, "Love Don't Let Me Down" by Umosia, "The Nervous Track" by Nuyorican Soul and lots more! Milano Jazz Dance ComboMilano Jazz Dance Combo ... CD
Record Kicks (Italy), 2008. Used ... $6.99
Sweet jazzy grooves from this hip Italian duo – Enzo & Gianni Lo Greco, who've also recorded as Quintetto Lo Greco for Schema Records! The sound here is definitely in a Schema groove – lots of jazzy instrumentation on piano, sax, trumpet, and trombone – very much in the best 60s Italian jazz mode, but kicked up just a bit with some rhythms aimed at the dancefloor – never too over the top, and all acoustic all the way through – a club jazz groove that's perfect for anyone who also digs work on labels like DejaVu or Ricky Tick! There's a bit of vocals on the record – sung by guests Alice Ricciardi, Felix, Katharine Ruestow, Roxie Ray, and Dionne Charles – and titles include "Sam Blues", "Feelin Good", "Don't Cry", "Much More", "Broken Rose", "Iperbole", "Please Don't Go", "Sweet Love", "Changes", and "Goodbye".
