✨✧ Brass ConstructionDon't Stop Keep On – The Definitive Collection (3CD set) ... CD
United Artists/Robinsongs (UK), Late 1970s/Early 1980s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 34.99
A motherload of funky grooves from Brass Construction – one of the most unique groups of the 70s, and one whose music just seemed to get better and better as the years went on! The great Randy Muller's at the head of the lineup – a talent you may know from his work on other projects, but who really rose to fame with the unique sound of this group – a masterful combination of jazzy horns, clubby rhythms, and just the right sort of funk and soul undercurrents – which results in an all-killer, no-filler approach all the way through! With their use of horns as live instrumentation, Brass Construction have a crackle and a sense of spontaneity that's different than other acts of their generation – a commitment to a groove, but a way of laying things out with a complexity that offers way more than catchy rhythms – a further tribute to the arranging genius of Muller! This 3CD package features 43 of the group's best tracks, from a long run of albums that spanned a decade – which is great, as a number of the albums have barely been reissued over the years. Titles include "Movin", "Celebrate", "Get Up", "Can You See The Light", "Do That Thang", "Perception", "Music Makes You Feel Like Dancing", "Ha Cha Cha", "Screwed", "Changin", "Peekin", "I'm Not Gonna Stop", "We Are Brass", "Partyline", "Dangerous", "Zig Zag", "Walkin The Line", "Right Place", "Shakit", "The Message", "Do Ya", "Attitude", "ETC", and "Conquest". Robinsongs/De-Lite (UK), Late 1970s/Early 1980s. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99 33.99
A huge collection of work from Crown Heights Affair – a group who were famously labelmates of Kool & The Gang in the late 70s, where they recorded an equally great run of funky grooves! As with K&TG, Crown Heights started out with a harder funky edge, then big-upped their size and started going more for the dancefloor – yet still working with all the sharp musicianship and deft rhythms that they learned at the start – making them way different than some of the prepackaged studio-based acts of the disco generation! You can definitely hear that evolution here – as the set begins with a number of cuts from the group's original album on RCA, which has never been reissued before – the moves into the best of their De-Lite years, including some rare singles next to album tracks too. The 3CD set features 42 tracks in all – and titles include "You Can't Bend My Super Rod", "Streaking", "Dancin (12" disco mix)", "Leave The Kids Alone", "Sex Trip", "Do It The French Way", "Music Is The World", "Dreaming A Dream", "Every Beat Of My Heart", "Galaxy Of Love", "Dance Lady Dance", "Super Rod", "Foxy Lady", "You Gave Me Love", "Let Me Ride On The Wave Of Your Love", "Love Rip Off", "Somebody Tell Me What To Do", "Rock The World", "Struck Gold", "The Rock Is Hot", "Come Fly With Me", "Dream World", and "Sure Shot". Robinsongs (UK), Late 1970s/1980s/1990s. Used 5CD ... $32.99
The biggest collection of gems from keyboard wizard George Duke that we've ever seen – a massive box set that 87 tracks that run the full gamut of his career after his initial solo records on the MPS label! The box brings together tunes from both his Epic and Elektra years, and charts an amazing progression in music – Duke's rise to superstardom in the late 70s, as effortlessly blended jazz and soul, with occasional forays into rock fusion with bassist Stanley Clarke – then his continued relevance in the 80s and 90s as he helped electric soulful jazz really evolve, which also involved a lot of shifts to embrace new technologies as well! And while some of Duke's other contemporaries would sometimes let the passage of time really blunt their skills or take away their core quality, George always managed to keep things real, and very much at the top of his game – which is why he was one of the few fusion giants of the 70s to keep on making magic many decades later. There's way too many tracks here to mention – but we can say that the set list is superb, with some great surprises alongside key cuts – and a few important collaborations as well. CD

Sun Ra & OthersSingles – The Definitive 45s Collection Vol 1 – 1952 to 1961 (3LP set – with download) ... LP
Strut (UK), 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $36.99 38.99
A whole new side of the talents of Sun Ra – especially if you only know the longer-style jams on some of his albums from the 60s and 70s! From the very start of his career, Ra was every bit as interested in issuing music on 45s as he was on albums – and in fact, at some of the more desperate times, the 7" single turned out to be a very affordable format to try out new ideas – including some great projects with other artists! The array of work presented here is stunning – as the set includes some very up-close and personal moments with Ra on record, plus some tight jazzy tracks from the Arkestra, surprising vocal group material designed to crack the R&B market, and some especially cool projects with other singers too. The package is put together with very detailed notes on all the singles – and while the bulk of this material comes from the key Arkestra years of the late 50s through the early 80s, there's also a few tracks from other dates too – including a handful of songs that were only issued as 45s in later years. Vinyl Part 1 is a 3LP set that focuses on the earliest years – with a total of 35 tracks in all – and titles include "Chicago USA" by The Nu Sounds, "I'm Coming Home" by Billie Hawkins, "Softalk" by Sun Ra, "Demon's Lullaby" by Le Sun Ra, "It's Christmas Time" by The Qualities, "M Uck M Uck (Matt Matt)" by Yochanan, "Bye Bye" by The Cosmic Rays, "October" by Sun Ra, "Adventur In Space" by Sun Ra, "Back In Your Own Backyard" by Hattie Randolph, "The Sun One" by Yochanan, "Dreaming" by The Cosmic Rays, "The Sun Man Speaks" by Yochanan, "Daddy's Gonna Tell You No Lie" by The Cosmic Rays, "Last Call For Love" by Billie Hawkins, and "Super Blonde" by Sun Ra. Impulse, Mid 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99
Excellent work from the glory days of Impulse Records – tracks from sessions for the label's most famous albums, but never issued until this special package! We're not normally ones to dig various artists collections in jazz, but this series is wonderful – an essential counterpart to the main records on Impulse, and filled with work that really offers a fresh look at the musicians. This first volume not only compiles a lot of tracks unavailable on vinyl elsewhere, but plays really well from start to finish, and includes "Big Nick" by John Coltrane, "Freedom" by Charles Mingus, "Flapstick Blues" by McCoy Tyner, "Single Petal Of A Rose" by Ben Webster, "Lisa & Pam" by ShirleyScott, "Solitude" by Duke Ellington and Coleman Hawkins and "Tippie" by Terry Gibbs. Heavy grooves from the Far Out label – a set of cuts from the company that don't just fall into their usual Brazilian bag – and which stretch out in a sweet array of styles that include funky fusion and African-inspired rhythms! Most of the artists here normally work in a Brazilian vein, but the collection offers up some fresh takes on their sound – and also manages to pull together some more obscure Far Out tracks, including a few unreleased cuts too! Titles include "Poweride" by Marcos Valle, "Pembe (unreleased version)" by Future Warriors, "Somewhere Beyond (unreleased version)" by 4Hero Presents Natures Plan, "Eighties Times" by Jose Roberto Bertrami, "Magnetic Feel (unreleased version)" by Roc Hunter, "Chameleon (Offworld rework)" by Azymuth, "Strike Hard" by Troubleman, "Jazz Carnival" by Azymuth, and "New Morning" by Sabrina Malheiros. Robinsongs (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A huge collection of work from funk and soul legend Jimmy Castor – an artist who cut a big number of incredible records for a variety of different labels – almost all of which are in this set! In truth, Jimmy's got a huge legacy in soul that goes back to early years in vocal groups – but this set picks up with his late 60s Latin soul material, then rolls into his famous funk work for RCA and Atlantic Records in the 70s, and continues with great club tracks from the following decade! There's a massive 45 tracks on the 3CD set – a fitting tribute to Castor's never-ending genius – and titles include "Hey Leroy", "It's Just Begun", "Soul Serenade", "Luther The Anthropoid", "Bertha Butt Boogie", "Troglodyte", "It's Just Begun", "Southern Fried Frijoles", "Daniel", "Tribute To Jimi", "LTD", "Psych", "You Better Be Good", "Hallucinations", "Love Train", "One Precious Word", "The Everything Man", "Dracula (part 1)", "The Return Of Leroy (part 1)", "I Just Wanna Stop", "Party People", "Need Your Lovin", "E Man Par Tay", "Space Age (12" mix)", "Super Love", "Bom Bom", "Supersound", "Don't Do That", "King Kong", and lots more! ✨✧ Dinosaur L (Arthur Russell)24 24 Music – The Definitive Arthur Russell Sleeping Bag Recordings ... CD
Sleeping Bag/Get On Down, 1981. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible album from Dinosaur L – the legendary New York dancefloor project of Arthur Russell! – fleshed out and expanded more than ever before by Sleeping Bag and Get On Down Records! The group's core sound is a punky, funky, chunky amalgam of bass thumping, guitar riffing, keyboard filling, and sax honking – all very much in the spirit of Russell's best quirky club work of the time, but with the added sound here of a more expanded approach – one that takes the tunes in a whole new territory than the more famous 12" singles! The tracks on the original set were simply numbered – "1", "2", "3", and so on – and come across almost as free-jamming instrumentals – but this reissue appends the songs with their 12" titles, so "#1" gets parenthetically entitled "You're Gonna Be Clean On Your Bean" and "#5" as "Go Bang!", plus this disc adds several 12" versions that were not on the original LP release, like Francois K's mix of 'Go Bang!" and Larry Levan's mix of "In The Corn Belt". Totally great stuff – as experimental as it is funky! This 2CD box set edition is amazing – coming in a heavy-duty box with each disc in an oversized gatefold style sleeve – and it includes more Arthur Russell collaborative and/or pseudonymous material for Sleeping Bag with or as Bonzo Goes To Washington, Felix, Sounds Of JHS Brooklyn and Indian Ocean. Other tracks include "School Bell/Treehouse" (Indian Ocean), "You Can't Hold Me Down (Extended Version)" (Felix), "5 Minutes (R-r-r Radio Mix)" (Bonzo Goes To Washington) and more. Also includes a nice booklet of photos, artwork and artist testimonials – plus notes by Russell biographer Tim Lawrence. CD

Solar/Robinsongs (UK), 1980s. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A huge amount of work from the mighty Midnight Star – a group who really helped find a new way forward for funk in the 80s, thanks to music like this! The group were one of the key acts on Solar Records, the west coast imprint who really changed things up at the time – and they have a quality that seems to take the older energy of a P-Funk ensemble, and compress it down in ways that make all the best use of the new technologies in the music – plenty of keyboards, basslines, and beats that get a bit more electric as the decade moves on – but always with a strong commitment to soulful lyrics, and a tight way of putting over a groove! The group were popular, but the cuts here are may more than commercial hits – as the lavish package features plenty of overlooked gems and rarities – in a collection of 41 tracks that include "90 Days Same As Cash", "Engine No 9", "Don't Rock The Boat", "Snake In The Grass", "If Walls Could Talk", "I Don't Wanna Be Lonely", "Planetary Invasion", "Headlines", "Curious", "Freak A Zoid", "Electricity", "No Parking On The Dancefloor", "Body Snatchers", "Make It Last,", "I've Been Watching You", "Tuff", "I Got What You Need", "Victory", "Hot Spot", and "Wet My Whistle". JuJu/Broc (France), Late 1960s. Sealed 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really rare slice of work from the funky genius Janko Nilovic – not the sound library grooves which have gained him fame over the decades – but instead a batch of rare cuts from his own short-lived record label, which he formed in 1968 with soul singer Davy Jones! Nilovic and Jones wrote all the tunes on the set, and they're presented by a variety of different artists – but have a unified feel that certainly comes from the strong instrumentation provided by Janko! The tunes are in a mix of mod 60s styles – some soul, some Hammond-heavy groovers, and some with a more expansive vibe that's almost a psychedelic take on the spirit of French pop during the period. The set features every a and b-side of the six singles issued by the label – plus four more bonus remixes – and titles include "Voodoo Juju Obsession (parts 1 & 2)" by K Ptyacunthapuserectus, "Lover's Summer Song" and "Moon Man" by Bobby Cannon, "Restless Gringo" and "The Lost & The Lonely" by Spiritus M, "Groovy Kinda Samba" and "The Juju Is The Thing" by Abra K Dabra, "Treasure Lee" and "Voodoo Juju" by Killer Steen, and "Tinka Bell" and "There's A Little Old Lady" by Tinka Bell. A well-titled set – as the double-length package brings together a huge run of records from Stevie Wonder – not just his familiar early singles for Motown, but also some later gems that show that Stevie's talents were alive and well, long past the 70s! If you know Wonder, you'll know that he's a one-man soul music powerhouse – and he wrote and produced almost all the cuts in the set, which is quite different than some of his Motown contemporaries, who just sang, and didn't create – all of which makes for a very unified vibe, as you hear Stevie evolving over the decades – on titles that include "I Wish", "Boogie On Reggae Woman", "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life", "My Cherie Amour", "Higher Ground", "Living For The City", "That Girl", "Do I Do", "Overjoyed", "Hey Love", "I Was Made To Love Her", "Fingertips (part 2)", "Part Time Lover", "Master Blaster", "Sir Duke", "You Haven't Done Nothin", "Superstition", "Uptight", "Signed Sealed Delivered", and "For Once In My Life". Afrostrut (UK), 1970s. New Copy 3LPs Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic batch of grooves – and a much-needed document of the rich array of funky sounds that were coming out of Nigeria in the 1970s! The country's best known as the homeland of Fela Kuti – an artist who forever changed the face of global funk – but what's not as well known is that there were a number of other artists operating in Fela's shadow, crafting their own interpretation of American soul and African funk during the same generation. This overstuffed package offers a great look (and listen) into that scene – and compiles tracks by a few artists you might already recognize, plus others that are presented here for the first time in such a set. As with other compilations on the Strut label, the notes are very well done, with loads of information and details on the recordings – but even more importantly, the music is fantastic, with a rich array of grooves that blows away most other recent compilations of Afro Funk from the 70s! Titles include "Enjoy Yourself" by Sahara All Stars Band, "Shango" by Peter King, "Dancing Time" by The Funkees, "Ikon Allah" by Bala Miller & The Great Music Pirameeds Of Afrika, "Tire Loma Da Nigbehin" by Monomono, "Kita Kita" by Gasper Lawal, "Agboju Logun" by Shina Williams & His African Percussionists, "Akayan Ekassa" by Sir Victor Uwaifo & His Melody Maesstroes, "Ja Fun Mi (inst)" by Sunny Ade, "Alla Wakbarr" by Ofo The Black Company, "Ifa" by Tunji Oyelana & The Benders, "Jenu Ko Ku" by Fela & Africa 70, "La La La" by Segun Bucknor, and "Orere Elejigbo" by Lijadu Sisters. 3LP set – with a total of 15 tracks, and notes on the inside of the cover on the music! Black & Blue (France), 1973/1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
The mood may be gray, but the sound here is plenty blue – those deep-toned lines that make trombonist Al Grey one of the most deeply-voiced players on his instrument! The set has Al in a nicely laidback setting – a relaxed, soulful approach that's almost similar to the Prestige Records Swingville sessions of the early 60s – with longish tracks that open up nicely with rhythm from Tommy Flanagan on piano, John Duke on bass, and Bobby Durham on drums. Jimmy Forrest also sits in on tenor, and cuts a nice edge, and adds maybe a bit more of a hardbop vibe. A few other tracks add in a larger group – with Hal Singer on tenor, Clarence Gatemouth Brown on guitar, and a few French players as well – in a vibe that's slightly more upbeat at times. Titles include "Face It Here It Is", "Catch Up With That", "Bedroom Eyes", and "Mellow For Love". There's a massive 31 tracks in the set – with previously unreleased versions of "Autumn Leaves" and "Blues For Peanuts", alongside other goodies that include "Calling Dr Funk", "Fascinating Rhythm", "Cast Your Fate To The Wind", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise","A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing", "Fenwyck's Farfel", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "Ginza Samba", "Work Song", "Mr Lucky", "Corcovado", "Great Pumpkin Waltz", "Skating", "Christmas Is Coming", "Thanksgiving Theme", "Theme To Grace", "Linus & Lucy", "El Matador", "Oh Good Grief", and "Christmas Time Is Here (inst)". Cotillion/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection of grooves from Mass Production – one of the best of the large funk ensembles to hit the mainstream at the end of the 70s – even though they didn't always get the success they deserved! That doesn't stop these guys from giving their all, though – super-sharp, super-tight instrumentation that comes down on the groove right from the get-go – and which moves with a fast funk energy that's a nice contrast to some of the stiffer, clunkier modes that were floating around at the time! These guys inherit the best impulses of Earth Wind & Fire and Kool & The Gang – and find a way to make their large lineup sound nice and lean, never too overcooked – with shifting vocals that really help keep things interesting throughout. The 3CD package features 45 tracks from their seven year stretch recording for Atlantic/Cotillion Records – and titles include "Sky High", "Groove Me", "Our Thought", "Bopp", "Turn Up The Music", "Diamond Chips", "Inner City", "Sun Dancer", "Victory 83", "Magic", "I Like To Dance", "Welcome To Our World", "Slow Bump", "Time Bomb", "Keep My Heart Together", "Cosmic Lust", "I Believe In Music", "Fun In The Sun", "Just Wanna Make A Dream Come True", "Firecracker", and "Eknuf (inst)". Great work from one of the grooviest combos ever – the funky bass of Eldee Young, soulful drums of Red Holt, and wicked piano and arrangements from some of the leading talents on the Chicago soul scene of the 60s! We'll be honest and say that to us, everything these guys did was great – so it would be hard for us to distill down their Brunswick work for a "definitive" set – but the compilers have done a pretty nice job of pulling out some of the pair's best singles and album cuts from the late 60s – and not just hits, but some great obscure work as well! Alston/Strut (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A great collection – the rare two albums by Beginning Of The End, plus bonus tracks too! First up is the classic Funky Nassau – s monster bit of funk that's unlike anything else we can think of! Beginning Of The End hailed from The Bahamas, but don't hold that against them – because instead of being a Caribbean cliche, they took the best part of the island rhythms, and used them to forge an incredible approach to funk! They've got a choppy sound that's the result of some incredibly dexterous guitar, bass, and drums – and which you'll recognize instantly from their one-time hit "Funky Nassau", a killer funk track that never gets old, no matter how many bands cover it over the years! That gem kicks off the album, which then rolls into the monster funky "part 2", which is even better! Other titles are equally wonderful – and include "Come Down", "Surrey Ride", "Monkey Tamarind", and "In The Deep". Essential – and one that you'll be spinning for years! Next is the self-titled Beginning Of The End set – one of the rarest funky records of all time – the hard-to-find second album by Beginning Of The End! This West Indian combo hit it big with their first album on Alston, but this second set, for some strange reason, never really got distributed – which is a damn shame, because it's every bit as funky as their first! The uniquely choppy rhythms of the group's first album are every bit as great here as on the first set – and if anything, the band's instrumentation is even better, especially on the guitar, which is wickedly tight, and played with a super-dope flanged-out approach on the solos. Vocals are great too, maybe even more soulful than before, especially on the album's few midtempo cuts – and the album's a must-have for any fan of the group's funky sound! Titles include "That's What I Get", "Super Woman", "Bluestrain", "Jump In The Water", "Falling Apart At The Seams", and "Trip To Nowhere". CD also features two cuts from 45s – the extra-funky "Fishman", and their Christmas classic "Gee Whiz It's Christmas". Great package – with very detailed notes! CD

A massive collection of work from Lakeside – one of the leading lights of the Solar Records label in the early 80s, and one of the label's key groups in helping to redefine funk in the decade! Lakeside take the large ensemble funk format of the late 70s, and give it a leaner, cleaner groove – really winnowing things down so that everything's right on the money, and the grooves come out great – while still also holding on to enough soul music energy in the vocals, songwriting, and presentation to set themselves apart from some of the more facile groove groups of the time. This 3CD set features 42 killers from Lakeside's glory days, pulled from their full range of recordings for Solar – titles that include "Rough Rider", "One Minute After Midnight", "Fantastic Voyage", "From 9:00 Until", "I Need You", "Strung Out", "Your Wish Is My Command", "The Urban Man", "Back Together Again", "We Want You", "Raid", "Turn The Music Up", "Real Love", "Untouchable", "Show You The Way", "Tinse Town Theory", "Money", "Party Patrol", "Still Feeling Good", "Bullseye", "U Got It Goin On", "All For You", "I Want To Hold Your Hand", "If You Like Our Music", "I Can't Get You Out Of My Head", "Shot Of Love", and "Your Love Is On The One". 3CD set features a stunning 65 tracks in all – and titles include "Chicago USA" by The Nu Sounds, "I'm Coming Home" by Billie Hawkins, "Softalk" by Sun Ra, "Demon's Lullaby" by Le Sun Ra, "It's Christmas Time" by The Qualities, "M Uck M Uck (Matt Matt)" by Yochanan, "Bye Bye" by The Cosmic Rays, "October" by Sun Ra, "Adventur In Space" by Sun Ra, "Back In Your Own Backyard" by Hattie Randolph, "The Sun One" by Yochanan, "Dreaming" by The Cosmic Rays, "The Sun Man Speaks" by Yochanan, "Daddy's Gonna Tell You No Lie" by The Cosmic Rays, "Last Call For Love" by Billie Hawkins, and "Super Blonde" by Sun Ra. Reedman Norris Turney is a player who was sometimes hidden in the Duke Ellington Orchestra – where he was often thought of as a second chair next to Johnny Hodges – but he really comes into his own on this rare date as a leader – a superbly-recorded session for the French Black & Blue label in the 70s! Turney's definitely got some of Hodges' soulful rasp in his alto – which he blows with a wonderfully full sound – but the set also features him on a bit of flute, really stretching out on the instrument, in a way he never got to with Duke. The group's a quintet – with the great Booty Wood on trombone, Raymond Fol on piano, Aaron Bell on bass, and Sam Woodyard on drums – and titles include "Simplicity", "Didier's Dance", "You See", "Biarritz", and "I Let A Song Go Out Of My Heart". Roadshow/Robinsongs (UK), Late 1970s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
An incredible legacy of funk – from a group who were easily one of the tightest, sharpest acts in the mainstream soul scene of the 70s! BT Express are a combo who pre-date disco, and whose grooves went a long way towards forging the blueprint for that mid 70s movement – but their music also never went the way of the easy crossover hit, or the cliched mode of pop disco production – as the second half of the 70s only seemed to have the group digging in their heels and sounding even funkier than ever! Compression is the key to the BT Express sound – an ability to bring together many different elements and lay them down right on the money together – focusing things so that the complexity of their instrumentation is often understated, even though it's the quality that makes their grooves so great! This massive 4CD package focuses on their material for the Roadshow label up to 1980 – and includes all the key cuts, album material, and other gems too – a massive 61 tracks in all, with titles that include "Give Up The Funk", "Closer", "Shout It Out", "I Want You With Me", "Shake It Off", "Have Some Fun", "It's Got To Be You", "Star Child", "The Door To My Mind", "Star Gazer", "Depend On Yourself", "Can't Stop Groovin Now", "Discotizer", "Still Good Still Like It", "Peace Pipe", "This House Is Smokin", "Express", "If It Don't Turn You On", "Once You Get It", "Do You Like It", "That's What I Want For You Baby", "Scratch My Itch", "Eyes, and lots lots more! Jess Conrad looks a bit more straight-laced than the usual British rocker of the 60s – and he sounds a bit more here, too – in a set of completely charming tracks that had their birth at the moment when the UK labels weren't above bringing a huge production force to bear on the talents of a singer! Conrad was often as much a screen actor as he was a singer – and in a way, he's maybe a bit like a British version of Tommy Sands – charming at the start, and able to bring a subtle sense of drama to his vocals – one that's never too overdone, but which paces things nicely here – and which creates some surprisingly nice moments in the music, maybe more than you'd expect from his clean teen look. This set features a huge 63 tracks in all – singles issued well into the 70s, along with some unissued tracks too – titles that include "There's Gonne Be A Day", "See The Tinker Ride", "Pussy Cat", "Tempted", "A Little Bit Of Loveliness", "My Idea", "A Conspiracy Of Cards", "Twist My Wrist", "Pretty Jenny", "Unless You Mean It", "Mystery Girl", "Out Of Luck", "There's Gonna Be A Day", "Every Breath I Take", "You Too", "Swimming In Tears", "Lock Up Your Daughters", and "Down Town Tonight". The core group here is great enough on its own – as Wes' guitar is backed by superb piano from Harold Mabern – who's really opening his flow at this time in his career, and makes for some really imaginative collaboration here with Montgomery – and the rest of the combo features tight rhythm from Arthur Harper on bass and Jimmy Lovelace on drums. The addition of Griffin is a nice surprise – especially as Montgomery wasn't often playing with tenor in a small group setting by this point – and titles include "Twisted Blues", "Blue N Boogie/West Coast Blues", "Full House", "To wane", "Jingles", "Impressions", "Four On Six", and "Round Midnight". Serge ChaloffBlue Serge/Boston Blow Up ... CD
Definitive (Spain), 1955/1956. Used ... $6.99
Two classic Capitol albums by Serge Chaloff on one CD – both of them great together! Blue Serge is a classic Capitol jazz session, and one that pairs Boston baritone player Serge Chaloff with an LA rhythm section that has Sonny Clark on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. The album's a perfect example of Chaloff's legendary (and short-lived) talents on the baritone – and listening to it, you'll hear how Chaloff was one of the few players ever to get such a rich tone and fluid style out of the instrument. Titles include "How About You?", "Handful Of Stars", "The Goof & I", "Susie's Blues", and "All The Things You Are". Boston Blow Up is one of a number produced by Stan Kenton for Capitol at the time, but it's far from the cooler jazz outings of other "Kenton Presents" sessions – a real Boston Blow up that has Serge standing starkly out front on the baritone, hitting some tremendous notes that show a command and dexterity on his instrument that few other players could match! Also noteworthy is the presence of the great Boots Mussulli on alto sax – a sharp-edge player with a lot of Charlie Mariano touches, and an artist who's rarely heard in a setting so stripped-down as this. Other artists include Herb Pomeroy on trumpet, Ray Santisi on piano, and Jimmy Zitano on drums – and titles include the original numbers "Kip", "Unison", "Bob The Robin", and "Sergical" – plus versions of "What's New", "Yesterday's Gardenias", and Jaki Byard's "Diane's Melody". ✨✧ Ruby Braff & Ellis LarkinsComplete Duets (Two Part Inventions In Jazz Vols 1 & 2/2x2 – Braff & Larkins Play Rodgers & Hart/Ruby Braff Special) ... CD
Vanguard/Definitive (Spain), 1955. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A unique collection of laidback jazz recordings – recorded in a very spare setting that has trumpeter Ruby Braff playing with pianist Ellis Larkins, and no other accompaniment! The setting's quite unusual for the time, and it makes for a relaxed intimate meeting between two strong talents that really differs from the work that either of them were recording elsewhere. But even more incredible is the way that the two players come together without additional support – working beautifully in a format that would have others faltering – always swinging the tunes despite the lack of bass or drums, and clearly very at home here with the extra space that lets both of them open up creatively! 2 CD set features 25 titles that are exclusively Larkins/Braff duets recorded for Vanguard in 1955 – plus an additional 8 numbers from a sextet session that features Braff with Vick Dickenson, Sam Margolis, and Nat Pierce. Titles include "Love For Sale", "Skylark", "Blue Moon", "Blues For Ellis", "Please", "Sailboat In The Moonlight", "Linger Awhile", "I'm In The Market For You", "Where Or When", "I Could Write A Book", "The Girl Friend", "Little Girl Blue", and "Thou Swell". ✨✧ Hampton HawesAll Night Session Vols 1, 2, & 3 ... CD
Contemporary/Definitive (Spain), 1956. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A noteworthy session from pianist Hampton Hawes – a rare quartet session from the 50s (at a time when Hawes was mostly working in trios) – and also a three volume set of releases, all recorded in the space of a single night! The album is truly an All Night Session – as the material here was recorded during the night of November 12 and early morning hours of November 13, 1956 – with an unusual group that features Hawes on piano, Red Mitchell on bass, Bruz Freeman on drums, and Jim Hall on guitar! Hall's ringing tones are a perfect partner for Hawes' light approach to the keys – and the relaxed, extended nature of the recording has both players really opening up on some of the album's longish tracks. 2CD set features all 3 volumes of the recording – a total of 17 tracks that includes "Jordu", "Groovin High", "Takin Care", "Hampton's Pulpit", "I'll Remember April", "I Should Care", "Woody'N You", "Two Bass Hit", "Will You Still Be Mine", "April In Paris", "Blue 'N Boogie", "Blues #4", "Blues #3", and "Do Nothin Till You Hear From Me". ✨✧ FunkadelicLet's Take It To The Stage ... LP
Westbound, 1975. Very Good Gatefold ... $39.99
A tasty little album from Funkadelic – one that has Bootsy Collins joining the group, and really hitting the unique approach that would become the definitive P-Funk groove! And although tracks are shorter and even more focused, there's still a fair bit of guitar in the set – keeping the trademark Funkadelic sound in place, to set them aside from the growing horn-heavy Parliament groove. Yet in both groups' work at the time, there's a growing emphasis on the rhythms at the bottom – a pulling up of the basslines in a way that was no doubt influenced by Bootsy's presence, and which would have a key influence on the sound of funk for years to come! Includes the massively infectious funk track "Get Off Your Ass and Jam", plus "Let's Take It To The Stage", "Be My Beach", "Baby I Owe You Something Good", "The Song Is Familiar", "No Head No Backstage Pass", "Atmosphere", "Stuffs & Things", and "Better By the Pound". Bob Marley & The WailersAfrican Herbsman (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Trojan, 1973. Used ... $12.99
Great early work by Bob Marley & The Wailers – some of it produced by the legendary Lee Perry, too! Some of the tunes are early takes on later famous versions – but in a way, they're actually more definitive – in that they tie Marley back to the rich Kingston culture, instead of making him some beatific figure who emerged to greatness on his own. The rougher edge is a great contrast to Marley during the Island years – as you'll hear on tunes that include "Lively Up Yourself","Small Axe", "Duppy Conqueror", "African Herbsman", "Sun Is Shining", "Keep On Moving", "Don't Rock The Boat", and "Kaya". Contemporary/OJC, 1957. Used ... $3.99
A legendary album from alto genius Art Pepper – a set in which he meets up with the famous Miles Davis rhythm section of the time – Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums – a trio of players who really help send the album over the top! There's maybe a bit more of a crackle in the rhythms here than on some of Art's other 50s records – which makes for a classic meeting of east and west coast scenes, and some especially nice raspy lines from Pepper – delivered at that level that always made his music of this period so nicely complex – outwardly cool, but with some seething energy at the core. Titles include a definitive take on Art's classic "Straight Life" – plus "Waltz Me Blues", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", and "Star Eyes". CD

Timeless metal from Black Sabbath and their first album with Ronnie James Dio out front – and we'd honestly put it up there with the best work of all their careers! No disrespect to Ozzy or the early, definitive era of Black Sabbath – those first few album are among the most influential rock & roll albums of all time and Heaven & Hell doesn't reinvent the wheel – but this new phase with another veteran front man is a masterclass heavy riffs, soaring vocals and hasn't aged a day. Includes the classic title track and "Neon Knights", "Children Of The Sea", "Wishing Well", "Die Young", "Walk Away" and "Lonely Is The Word". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ GenesisDuke ... CD
Atlantic, 1980. Used ... Out Of Stock
An overlooked gem from Genesis – a record that maybe forms a perfect bridge between their early concept years and the tighter mode that drove them into the 80s – and a set that really has the trio version of the group finding their way forward! There's some of the catchiness of Abacab to come, but there's also more of a sense of scope – that long form instrumental exploration that Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks continued from the early years – honed into more focus, and driven by the increasingly strong drum talents of Phil Collins! Phil's a few years away from being an MTV figure here – and is instead more of a proud progger, finding a way to bring things into tighter energy – and really balance the whole thing beautifully. Titles include the hits "Turn It On Again" and "Misunderstanding" – balanced with "Duke's Travels", "Dutchess", "Behind The Lines", "Heathaze", and "Cul De Sac". CD

✨✧ Tim LawrenceLife and Death on the New York Dance Floor, 1980 to 1983 ... Book
Duke University Press, 2016. Used ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the coolest book ever from dancefloor historian Tim Lawrence – the man who's given us definitive works on disco and dance music – now turning his sharp eye on some key years of the New York scene! The book looks at a very special time in the city's underground – a post-Studio 54 moment when the door was wide open to new sounds, new ideas, and new cultures – a point where punk met hip hop, funk met avant jazz, art met pop – and things were never the same again! Lawrence digs deeper here than ever before – isolating key figures, both familiar and obscure – and tracing lines in ways that might be surprising, even to anyone who lived through this incredible scene. The book is super-heavy – almost 600 pages, the last 100 pages of which are notes, index, and other incredible information – and as always with Lawrence, the book's a very lively read from start to finish! 577 pages, softcover, with some black and white images Book

American, 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
Johnny's third record for American Recordings – and one of the best of his late career – again backed by members Tom Petty and members of his Heartbreakers and other smart players, with a mix of hard scrabble country and folk cuts, and Cash's authoritative, soulful covers of great songs by Will Oldham, Nick Cave, Neil Diamond and others. It's brilliant stuff, and a mix of darkness and more tender material, coming at a time when Johnny's health was going, but his spiritual integrity was a strong as ever. It's dark, but never bleak – which is hard trick pull off! Johnny was the man to do it. Includes "I Won't Back Down", "Solitary Man", "That Lucky Old Sun", "Field Of Diamonds", what we'd consider the definitive version of Johnny's own "Country Trash", "I'm Leaving Now" with the great Merle Haggard, "Wayfaring Stranger", "(Would You Lay With Me) In A Field Of Stone", "One", his amazing version Oldham's "I See A Darkness", "The Mercy Seat" and more. ✨✧ Count Basie with Joe WilliamsEveryday I Have The Blues (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Roulette, 1959. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Joe Williams' standout classics from the 50s – just the sort of record that put him on top of his game at the time! The album's one of Joe's classic outings with Count Basie – one recorded for Roulette with a slightly looser, slightly rawer feel than their work together on Verve. Joe's rendition of "Everyday I Have The Blues" is a near-definitive one – tight, syncopated, and grooving in a style that stretches back to its roots, but which also steps out with a fresh sort of groove that points the way towards changes in soulful vocal styles during the 60s. Other titles work equally well in the mode – bluesy, but never hokey, all freshened up by the Basie approach of the time – and titles include "Baby Won't You Please Come Home", "Going To Chicago", "Joe Sings The Blues", and "What Did You Win". CD also features 4 bonus tracks recorded a few years before – including "Confessin The Blues", "How Can You Lose", and "Five O'Clock In The Morning". CD
