Deep PurpleFireball ... LP
Warner, 1971. Very Good Gatefold ... $14.99
A definite fireball from the legendary early lineup of Deep Purple – a record that has the group soaring to the skies in a blazing blend of guitars, keyboards, bass, and drums! A set like this is seminal for understanding just how far rock music stepped in just a few short years – because back in the mid 60s, these guys might have been slavishly laying out blues riffs, or trying to copy their American heroes – but those roots are completely subsumed in the band's own style, and delivered with a dexterity that's truly amazing – a brash, balls-out quality that should be given everything it's trying to claim – because a record like this doesn't need to answer to anyone! Titles include "Fireball", "No No No", "Anyone's Daughter", "Demon's Eye", "The Mule", and "No One Came". LP, Vinyl record album
(Green label pressing. Vinyl has a short click on "No One Came". Cover has light wear.)

Swamp DoggTotal Destruction To Your Mind (purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
Canyon/Alive, 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $20.99 21.99
One of the earliest albums ever from Swamp Dogg – and one of the best as well! The set was cut down at Capricorn Studios in Macon, and has a wicked blend of southern funk and deep soul that Swamp never hit this well ever again – a quality that almost makes us think the album was more of a serious effort than some of his later recordings – which always seemed to hide the real soul depth of Jerry Williams beneath some tongue in cheek elements. Not so here, though – as the record has a straight ahead deep soul quality that features Swamp's vocals crackling with the best of his contemporaries – and belting out some wickeder messages on the album's funkier tunes. Mr Dogg supervised the whole thing – from conception to production to performance – and titles include "Total Destruction To Your Mind", "I Was Born Blue", "Redneck", "Synthetic World", "Dust Your Head Color Red", and "The Baby Is Mine". Rhino, 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $30.99 31.98
One of the biggest soundtracks from that big 90s moment of compilation soundtracks – but a set that's been a lot more timeless than most at the time, given that it's filled with rock classics from the 70s generation! Think of the set as tapping into classic rock radio at a key moment, and you'll definitely get the vibe of the record – a non-stop set of AM radio classics, with titles that include "Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo" by Rick Derringer, "Slow Ride" by Foghat, "School's Out" by Alice Cooper, "Jim Dandy" by Black Oak Arkansas, "Tush" by ZZ Top, "Love Hurts" by Nazareth, "Low Rider" by War, "Highway Star" by Deep Purple, "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath, "Stranglehold" by Ted Nugent, "Fox On The Run" by Sweet, and "Rock & Roll All Night Long" by Kiss. Fortune, Late 50s. Very Good- ... $24.99
One of our favorite doo-wop tracks of all time! Nolan Strong and the Diablos do an incredible job with "The Wind" – making the cut slow, deep, sad, and dreamy – in a way that few other doo wop groups could match. "Baby Be Mine" is more of an uptempo number – hard rocking, and sounding a bit like Hank Ballard & The Midnighters. 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Hi RhythmOn The Loose ... CD
Hi Records (UK), 1976. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A great little album of southern funk from the 70s – cut by the team that provided musical backing on many of the classic Hi Records sessions from the time! The groove is a bit different than usual for Hi – not compressed, burning deep soul – but tight, funky, and flanged-out – a bit like what classic P-Funk might have been like, had it been recorded in Memphis! The group's super sharp in their playing – with great bass and electric keyboards – but they've also got kind of a trippy feel that's very surprising, given the more restrained soul quality of much of the stuff on Hi. The album's all original material, and most cuts have cool vocals slinking in and out of the funk – and titles include "On The Loose", "Skinny Dippin'", "Superstar", "Purple Raindrops", and "You Got Me Comin". Jimmy RuffinJimmy Ruffin Sings Top Ten (sepia tone cover) ... LP
SOUL, 1966. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A great full length album from Motown's mighty Jimmy Ruffin – and a set with a lot deeper soul sound than you'd guess from the "top ten" in the title! The music's not commercial, but some of the sharpest Motown soul of the time – the kind of work that made the young Jimmy as important a solo male act to Motown as Marvin Gaye – thanks to a wonderfully crackling, raspy style of singing that makes any tune really stand out strongly. Some of the numbers here are originals associated with Ruffin, and others are 60s hits by others – but completely remade by Jimmy with his wonderful approach – and titles include the classic "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted", plus "I've Passed This Way Before", "Gonna Give Her All The Love I've Got", "World So Wide Nowhere To Hide", "Black Is Black", "Bless You", "How Can I Say I'm Sorry", and "As Long As There Is Love". Raymond ScottRaymond Scott Conducts The Rock N Roll Symphony ... LP
Everest, 1958. Near Mint- ... $5.99
An odd one for Raymond Scott – and a sweet one, too! First, this "rock n roll symphony" isn't really rock, so much as it is a set of standards and 50s pop instrumentals – mostly non-rock – all performed in a mellow easy style. Second, even though Scott's at the head of the group, the sound is pretty straightforward – quite nice for 50s instrumental work, but not nearly as crazy as some of Scott's more groundbreaking albums. One treasure of the album, though (and this is perhaps the "rock" element), is that it includes loads of tenor solos by Sam Taylor – snaking through the mist with a good soulful quality. Titles that include "Stardust", "True Love", "All The Things You Are", "How High The Moon", "Summertime", "Deep Purple", "La Cumparsita", "Amor" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Turquoise & silver label stereo pressing with deep groove, in the slip-case cover. Outer cover has some ring and edge wear, split top seam, and some streaks of marker on back.)

TemptationsTemptations In A Mellow Mood ... LP
Gordy, 1967. Very Good+ ... $11.99
The Temptations in a mellow mood, but one that's still plenty darn swinging – thanks to some jazzy arrangements from HB Barnum, Oliver Nelson, and Don Costa! The groove here is more in a vocal group mode from years past – Temptations harmonies turned more towards standards and crossover classics – but there's still an undeniable Motown sound going on too, thanks to the vocal range of the group, and the way they handle these tunes! Titles include "A Taste Of Honey", "For Once In My Life", "Try To Remember", "The Impossible Dream", and "That's Life". LP, Vinyl record album

Chuck WillisKing Of The Stroll ... LP
Atlantic, 1958. Fair ... $4.99
Chuck Willis is billed as "the king of the stroll" on the cover of this classic Atlantic album – but that title only gets at just a small part of his genius! The set's one of a rare few Chuck cut in his too-short life – and it may well be his greatest, as it's really got Willis stepping out with a strong degree of focus – on a batch of all-original tunes sung in that amazing crackling voice of his! The style is R&B, but really points the way towards soul music – thanks to a personal presentation of the music, and some deep roots that really come through in the overall sound. Titles include the classic original versions of "CC Rider" and "Betty & Dupree" – both numbers that sound better in Chuck's own hands than any later incarnations – and other titles include "That Train Is Gone", "Juanita", "It's Too Late", "My Life", "Ease The Pain", and "There's Got To Be A Way". The deepest of the deep from the American scene at the start of the 70s – groups so hip they weren't quite soul, weren't quite rock – and instead kind of a funky hybrid of both! After opening our ears to countless underground sounds from around the globe, the Now Again label turn back to some of the territory of its roots – the hinterland of groups who labored mostly in obscurity, but left behind a few funky 45s that have become the stuff of legend – and which show us that there was a much bigger psychedelic funk underground out there besides groups like Funkadelic or the early Ohio Players! VariousHurdy Gurdy Songs – Words & Music By Donovan 1965 to 1971 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $16.99 22.99
A really great take on the music of Donovan – not his own groovy songs of the 60s, but a whole host of others taking up his tunes and moving it into some really great new dimensions! We love Donovan to death, and while we'll never tire of the man's own recordings of his tunes, we're always surprisingly charmed when other people take up his work – as you'll hear here, in a blend of jazz, rock, soul, and pop takes on these really wonderful songs – lyrics that often have all these playful psychedelic touches, and melodies that open themselves up to all sorts of very cool mod arrangements! Many of these tracks are lesser-known versions – not hit covers, but the kind of unusual tunes that really make a well-done compilation like this so worth owning. As with other Ace titles, there's plenty of notes on each tune and its interpreter – and titles include "The Pebble & The Man" by Bridget St John, "Celeste" by Paul Jones "Poor Cow" by Noel Harrison, "Superlungs" by Terry Reid, "Sonny Goodge Street" by Tom Northcutt, "Jenifer Juniper" The Sandpipers, "Season Of The Witch" by Lou Rawls, "Snakeskin" by Julie Felix, "Try & Catch The Wind" by The Gosdin Brothers, "Oh Gosh" by Sandie Shaw, "Translove Airlines" by Big Jim Sullivan, "Lalena" by Deep Purple, "Three King Fishers" by Gabor Szabo, "Hampstead Incident" by Boujoura, "Skip Along Sam" by The Sugar Shoppe, and a fantastic take on "Hurdy Gurdy Man" by Eartha Kitt! Wilson PickettWicked Pickett ... LP
Atlantic, 1966. Very Good ... Just Sold Out!
A breakout record that forever put Wilson Pickett at the top of the heap for mainstream 60s soul – thanks to the oft-covered, endlessly played "Mustang Sally" single that leads off the set! And although the groove established by that track helped Pickett establish an audience on both sides of the fence, the full album itself is much deeper stuff – a searing album of southern-styled soul recorded with some great Muscle Shoals production – Rick Hall and Tom Dowd at the helm – and key session players who include Charlie Chalmers, Chips Moman, Tommy Cogbill, Spooner Oldham, and Roger Hawkins – all of whom help give the record the intimate, earthy feeling that helped Pickett step out with a stronger sound than earlier recordings. (And in fact, this album's perhaps a key pre-Aretha Franklin example of the way that Atlantic's vision could majestically change the sound of an already-known soul artist – bringing them far deeper than ever before.) Titles include "Mustang Sally", "Everybody Needs Somebody To Love", "Nothing You Can Do", "Three Time Loser", "Sunny", "She Ain't Gonna Do Right", "Knock On Wood", "Time Is On My Side", and "You Left The Water Running". ✨✧ Shuggie OtisOriginal Album Classics (Here Comes Shuggie/Freedom Flight/Inspiration Information) (3CD set) ... CD
Columbia (UK), 1969/1971/1973. Used 3 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
Great work from one of the hippest funk guitarists ever – three albums in one sweet little package! Here Comes Shuggie Otis is a classic album of bluesy funk – one that features the guitar of Johnny Otis' young son Shuggie, in a slightly tighter setting than he'd been getting on some of Johnny's own LPs! Shuggie here is still very much under the guidance of his dad – working in a mode that really emphasizes the fuzzier side of his guitar, in a style that was clearly an attempt to hook Shuggie up with the Hendrix audience. Not that that's a problem, though – as the record also features some stone funky playing too, as well as organ work by Leon Haywood, sax by Preston Love, and some other great studio work by members of The Crusaders! Freedom Flight is the second album from Shuggie Otis – a wild and wooly batch of grooves that really stretches out the sound from the first! Shuggie's got much more of a hand in the arrangements here – and the tunes are grooving in a sweet blend of funk, rock, and soul – really drenched in the best cross-cultural influences going down on the west coast scene of the time – a kind of color-blind quest for the groove that comes across with a really righteous power! Tracks include the original version of "Strawberry Letter 23" – plus the cuts "Ice Cold Daydream", "Freedom Flight", "Sweet Thang", "Purple", and "Me & My Woman". Inspiration Information is an insanely wonderful album! For this album, Shuggie shocked the world by moving into a stripped-down mode that pairs his guitar with spare drum machine rhythms, flanged-out deeply soulful vocals, and one of the most laidback conceptions of funk you'll ever hear. The album's a landmark – one of those gems that's unlike anything else you can think of, but which will redefine your concept of what you want in a record for years to come. Every track's a winner – and the whole thing's a perfectly unified batch of tunes that includes instant classics like "Inspiration Information", "Island Letter", "Aht Uh Mi Hed", "XL 30", and "Rainy Day". CD

A fantastic record from Prince – a double-length set that came out at a time when the purple one was brimming over with energy and new ideas – and a step slightly in the direction of more socially conscious material! Everything that was great about Prince before the record is completely intact – his amazing ability to create funky grooves, slinky sensuality, and songs that are so catchy, they can win over audiences on both sides of the fence. But there's also some deeper elements here going on too – maybe more space for thoughtful presentation spread out over the 2LPs that comprised the original record – at a level that's only more confirmation of the never-ending genius of prince!
