DeepPsychedelic Moods Of The Deep (remastered edition) ... CD
Cameo/Cicadelic, 1966. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
The west coast had The Seeds, and the east coast had The Deep – a group known only for this one album, but a key garage psych group nonetheless! This record's a gem through and through – oddly (almost mistakenly) issued on the mostly-pop Cameo label in the mid 60s, but recorded with a fantastic studio technique that has lots of odd electronics and sound effects sneaking in alongside the fuzzy guitars and earthy vocals. The band were mostly a studio project between Rusy Evans and Mark Barkan of Freak Scene, and also features work by a young David Bromberg – and although they've only left this one record to their legacy, it's a heck of a great album to leave! Titles include "Color Dreams", "Pink Ether", "Turned On", "When Rain Is Black", "Psychedelic Moon", "Shadows On The Wall", "Trip #76", and "On Off Off On". 18 tracks in all. CD
(2010 Definitive Masters Edition.)

Deep PurpleFireball ... LP
Warner, 1971. Very Good Gatefold ... $19.99
A definite fireball from the legendary early lineup of Deep Purple – a record that has the group soaring to the skies in a blazing blend of guitars, keyboards, bass, and drums! A set like this is seminal for understanding just how far rock music stepped in just a few short years – because back in the mid 60s, these guys might have been slavishly laying out blues riffs, or trying to copy their American heroes – but those roots are completely subsumed in the band's own style, and delivered with a dexterity that's truly amazing – a brash, balls-out quality that should be given everything it's trying to claim – because a record like this doesn't need to answer to anyone! Titles include "Fireball", "No No No", "Anyone's Daughter", "Demon's Eye", "The Mule", and "No One Came". LP, Vinyl record album
(Green label pressing. Vinyl has a short click on "No One Came". Cover has light wear.)

Warner, 1972. Very Good Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the crowning classics from the early years of Deep Purple – and a set that will forever be remembered for giving the world the classic rock anthem "Smoke On The Water"! Yet the record as a whole is even better – and is filled with some long-burning, hard-wailing tracks that easily put Deep Purple in the company of the heaviest groups of their generation – thanks to some killer contributions from Ritchie Blackmore's guitar! The whole thing packs a hell of a punch when taken in a full dose – from the start of "Highway Star", to the last notes of "Space Truckin" – and all the great in-between sounds from "Pictures Of Home", "Maybe I'm A Leo", "Never Before", "Lazy", and "Smoke On The Water". David AxelrodSeriously Deep ... LP
Polygram/Get On Down, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 24.98
An amazing slice of music from the legendary David Axelrod – quite different than his better-known sides for Capitol and Reprise Records – and plenty darn funky overall! Axelrod is at his studio best here – stepping off the funky jazz modes he produced for Cannonball Adderley, and taking a shot at that territory on his own! In a reversal of modes, Cannonball actually handles the production – with help from Jimmy Bowen – which leaves Axelrod alone to compose, arrange, and direct the group on the set. The album's got a fair bit of electricity in the mix – heavy keyboards from Joe Sample, and some really fuzzy guitars – plus lots of choppy reed work from Joe Sample and Ernie Watts, all wrapped up with some monstrously funky drums from Ndugu Chancler. There's a very bottom-heavy groove to the record – one that makes for a few completely amazing breaks, and a very funky sound overall – and Axelrod does an amazing job of controlling the players here – so that nobody jams too much, and the grooves are always right on the money! The whole thing's great – a sublime symphony of instrumental funk all the way through – and titles include "Reverie", "Miles Away", "Go For It", "Ken Russell", "1000 Rads", and "One". ✨✧ Comet Is ComingTrust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery ... CD
Impulse, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic blend of spiritual jazz styles and electronic elements – served up here by the trio of drummer Betamax, keyboardist Danalogue, and saxophonist King Shabaka – the last of whom you might recognize as Shabaka Hutchings from a host of other hip projects on the contemporary London scene! Shabaka's work on tenor and bass clarinet really gives the record an earthy, organic core – which seems to let the keyboards really soar off into space, often with the sort of vibe that you'd guess from the group's name and the cover image on the record – in a wide flurry of live and amplified performance elements! At some level, the trio is almost London's answer to some of the jazz-meets-studio work from Chicago's International Anthem label – and like some of the groups who record for that imprint, these guys are all strong jazz musicians at the core – but performing at a level that's very beyond the ordinary. Titles include "Birth Of Creation", "Summon The Fire", "Blood Of The Past", "Astral Flying", "Super Zodiac", "The Universe Wakes Up", and "Timewave Zero". CD

Fat NightLive For Each Other (deep blue vinyl pressing) ... LP
Acrophase, 2020. New Copy 2LP ... $26.99 28.99
Mellow soul from the Windy City – served up by a group we first discovered on a Colemine funky 45, and who sound even better here in the space of a full length album! The group clearly have an influence from sweet soul of the 70s – but their presentation is more contemporary too – both at an instrumental level, where they seem to have winnowed down the best sonic elements of larger orchestrations – and at a vocal level, where they never try to push too hard for their range, or overstate their case too much. We really appreciate that subtle balance – and it resonates strongly throughout, on titles that include "Love Me", "Honest Man", "Long Weekend", "Telephone/Good Place", "Heart", "Life For Each Other", "Special", "Wander", "Alone In Love", and "Fat Night's Theme". Kitsos HarisiadisLament In A Deep Style – 1929 to 1931 ... LP
Third Man, Late 20s/Early 30s. New Copy Gatefold ... $9.99 18.00
Clarinet music, but unlike anything else you might have heard before – as Greek musician Kitsos Harisiadis uses the instrument in a style that's quite far from American jazz and swing! Instead, the clarinet here is used on a series of folkloric tunes – music from the northwestern region of Greece, where Kitsos lived in the 20s – preserved here on vintage 78rpm recordings that are filled with rich tone and echo – audio that seems to transform the clarinet even more, as the instrument is set amidst spare percussion or stringed instrument backing – to soar out into space with a very melancholy vibe! Harisiadis is incredibly deft – running up and down the instrument with the speed and creativity of a free jazz musician, but always keeping things melodic, even when emotionally moving. Titles include "Zagorisio", "Dipli Gaida", "Skaros", "Mirologi In Do", "Stroto Pogonisio", "Miarologi Arvanitiko", and "Gaida". LP, Vinyl record album

Oscar JeromeBreathe Deep ... CD
Caroline, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
The striking debut of Oscar Jerome – a UK singer/songwriter who works with a fair bit of jazzy elements here – thanks in part to some Rhodes and keyboards from Joe-Armon Jones! The set's the kind of genre-stepping record that we'd expect from some of Jones' London contemporaries – music that's familiar at one level, but very different and fresh at another – as Oscar sings and plays guitar on most tracks, but in a mode that's not easy to categorize at all! The guitar often has lots of jazzy phrasing, but is never straight jazz – and the lyrics are upfront, but sometimes equally balanced with things that the guitar is saying too. Although Jerome sounds nothing like him, we might compare the uniqueness of his approach to territory explored by Vini Reilly many years ago – a space that's very much his own, on titles that include "Give Back What U Stole From Me", "Your Saint", "Coy Moon", "Gravitate", "Draggin My", "Timeless", and "Sun For Someone". VariousEccentric Soul – Outskirts Of Deep City ... CD
Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $7.99 18.98
An essential chapter of Miami soul – even if most of the work is appearing here for the first time ever! The set is a magnificent companion to Numero's Deep City collection of pre-TK Miami soul – but it's put together in such a way that it's almost a beautiful introduction to the south Florida sound on its own – served up in a batch of rare, unreleased tracks! The music is every bit as wonderful as you'd expect – Miami soul recorded at a time before cliches had started to hit that scene – and when the best artists down south were strongly resonating ideas from Memphis and Muscle Shoals with other elements borrowed from northern groups both funky and mellow. But even above the 20 great tracks on the CD, the package is amazing too – filled with notes on each group, a special appendix on Miami soul, a rare indie label discography, and a wealth of great images and photos – all layered lovingly into a full-color, 32 page booklet! Numero have really outdone themselves with this one – and the collection is way more than a part 2 to their previous package – more of a brilliant set of soul tunes on its own, complete with a booklet that's as beautiful as the music. Titles include "One Little Piece" by The Rollers, "Don't Be Surprised" by Lynn Williams, "No Way Out" by Clarence Reid, "What's In The Lovin" by Helene Smith, "Mr Lucky" by Betty Wright, "There Goes My Baby" by James Knight & The Butlers, "Do What You're Doin" by The Rising Sun, "Do Your Stuff" by Perk Badger, "Masterpiece" by Deep City Band, "Nasty Dog (part 2)" by The Nasty Dog Catchers, "Thank You Baby" by Betty Wright, "Your Love Won't Let Me Leave You" by Snoopy Dean, "The Pot Can't Talk About The Kettle" by Helene Smith, "Show Me What You Got" by Frank Williams & The Rocketeers, "Don't Be A Fool" by Clarence Reid, and "Knockin At The Wrong Door" by The Rollers. The birth of Miami soul, and a beautifully done document of the rare Deep City label – home to Willie Clarke, Clarence Reid, and Betty Wright in the years before Alston and TK Records! Way before Miami soul started cracking the charts at the start of the 70s, Deep City was already putting the best parts in place – working with a tight roster of artists and an equally tight in-house band that rose from the ranks of Florida A&M's Marching 100 band – razor-sharp instrumentalists who helped forge a groove worthy to rival the sounds of Memphis, Muscle Shoals, and even the best of Detroit at the time – given that some of the work here has a much sweeter soul sound than other 60s southern soul. As usual, the Numero team have done an incredible job with the package – pulling out rare photos, personal stories, and just the right amount of information to breathe new life into the Deep City label and help it live anew. CD features 17 tracks in all – including "Paralyzed" and "Good Lovin" by Betty Wright, "Am I A Good Man" by Them Two, "Someone To Fulfill My Needs" and "I Love You Baby" by The Moovers, "I Am Controlled By Your Love" and "Willing & Able" by Helene Smith, "Good Thing (part 1)" by Frank Williams & The Rocketeers, "It's My Baby" and "The Upset" by Paul Kelly, and "Stay Away From My Johnny" by Freda Gray & The Rocketeers. BBE (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. Used ... $9.99
Mindblowing jazz from Japan – a tremendous introduction to the 70s scene in Tokyo if you've never heard this music at all – and a package that also includes a fair bit of rare tracks, even if you're not a newcomer! The Japanese love of American jazz is no secret – and the music was spread widely there by American forces after WWII – but during the 70s, something really special happened, and the scene found a voice that was all its own – exploding with new energy to create sounds that were soulful, spiritual, and powerfully poetic! By the end of the 70s, Japanese fusion would get more global exposure – but most of the tracks here are acoustic, save for Fender Rhodes lines – and feature completely inventive, imaginative sounds – often set to grooves that are modal and spiritual too. A fantastic collection throughout – with tracks that include "Blind Man" by Shintaro Quintet, "White Fire" by Takao Uematsu, "Aya's Samba" by Eiji Nakayama, "Earth Mother" by Koichi Matsukaze, "Dead Letter" by Tohru Aizawa, "Kaze" by Takeo Moriyama, "Long Neal" by Kiyoshi Sugimoto, "Unknown Point" by Mitsuaki Katayama, and "Little Island" by Fumio Karashima. VariousJ Jazz 3 – Deep Modern Jazz From Japan (3LP 180 gram pressing) ... LP
BBE (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $49.99 54.99
An ear-opening set of Japanese jazz from a time when that nation's scene was really taking off – a period in the 70s when all sorts of new artists and new ideas were really flying around – and leaving behind a huge recorded legacy that's been mostly out of reach for us in the west! Japan always had a few big names in jazz that got exported overseas, but the work here is from some of the smaller names who were still turning out incredible music – much of it only issued on vinyl, and not reissued later – brought together here with copious notes that really tell you a heck of a lot about the music! There's definitely a post-Coltrane vibe going on – lots of spiritual elements, mixed with both moments that are funkier and more soulful, and others that are a bit more freewheeling – often stretched out on extended tracks that really let the artists take off and find their space. Titles include "Black Nile" by Hideyasu Terakawa, "Kirisame" by Ryusei Quartet, "Honey Sanba" by Katsuyuki Itakura, "Cumulonimbus" by Shigeharu Mukai, "Song Of Island" by Yasuhiro Kohno Trio + One, "Phoebus" by Hiroshi Murakami & Dancing Sphinx, "Morning Tiede" by Kohsuke Mine, "Kemo Sabe" by Masao Nakajima, "Song For Hope" by Aki Takase, "Planets" by Masaru Imada Trio + 1, "1/4 Samba" by Tatsuya Nakamura, "Acoustic Chicken" by Koichi Matsukaze, and "Cumorah" by Eiji Nakayama. Righteous (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 20.99
A crazy collection of singles from the pre-hippie years of the beatnik – that cool cat who loved jazz, read poetry, and dug the scene with plenty of attitude! That attitude is the main focus of most of the cuts here – obscure tracks from the late 50s and early 60s that poke fun at the heady thoughts and easy intellectualism of the beat scene – presented in a range of different styles that really run the gamut – from jazz, to rock, to many other genres in between – including a fair bit of offbeat spoken word and instrumental records too! The vibe here follows nicely in the other Lux & Ivy collections on the Righteous label – full of weird and wild records we never would have discovered otherwise – with cuts that include "Dog" by Bob Dorough, "Laffin Beatnik" by Johnny Beeman, "Reaching Into In" by Ken Nordine, "No Pictures Please" by Rod McKuen, "Manhattan Fable" by Babs Gonzales, "Pimples & Braces" by Spike Jones & The City Slickers, "Teenage Beatnik" by Louis Nye, "A Beatnik Story" by The Expressos, "Meet The Bongo Man" by Johnny O, and "William Butler Yeats On The Third Avenue El" by Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Tramp (Germany), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $14.99
A fantastic collection, and one that goes deep deep into the farther reaches of the spiritual scene in the 70s – tracks that are way more obscure than music on labels like Strata East or Impulse, and which really show an evolution of music ideas at the time! The core style is jazz, but there are also other elements at play too – and the tracks are a mix of instrumentals and vocals, the latter of which have an especially wonderful quality! Some of the tunes are nicely gentle, almost quiet in spirit – while others have a bolder, more political approach – and the mix of tunes throughout is very fresh, and maybe even better than the first collection in this series. Titles include "Mother's Day" by Lenny Marcus Trio, "Africa The Beautiful" by Roland Hayes, "Muhammad Ali" by Jule Farmer, "Fulive" by Supa Lowery Brothers, "Themes & Variations" by Black Is, "Natural Life" by Natural Life, "Heal It" by Rama Dyushambee, "Ghana Cha" by Donn Preston Group, "Quernemoen" by Wayne Powell Octet, "Egg Nog" by Tommy Jones, "Attitude" by Organic Pulse Ensemble, "Brass Winds" by The Niambi Big Band, "Freedom" by Brother Yu Sextet, and "Ser Vi Tude" by James Scales & All Stars. VariousPraise Poems 7 – A Journey Into Deep Soulful Jazz & Funk From The 1970s ... CD
Tramp (Germany), 1970s. New Copy ... $14.99
This series keeps blowing us away with each new entry – taking us into musical territory that's completely its own, in a way that few other compilations have ever done! The cover is a bit misleading, as the territory here is the farther reaches of hip soul and groovy jazz in the 70s – territory that's slightly spiritual, but not in the more familiar modes of spiritual jazz – as most tunes have a bit of a groove, and the compilation balances instrumental and vocal tracks in this really great way – almost with a compressed approach to righteousness that really packs a heck of a lot of spirit into a shorter sort of track! The whole thing is filled with music we never would have discovered otherwise – and titles include "Wear Me Out" by The Kats, "Low Down Soul" by Jerry Sandifer, "Summertime" by Promotion Soul Concern, "He Does It Better' by Marva Josie, "Brazilica" by Stevens Scott & Dee, "Sometimes" by Penn Central, "Love In Disguise" by The New Hope Project, "A Blind Man Who Can See" by Edmund Sullivan, "She Shut Me Down" by The M+M, "Flower Song" by Shalynn, and "So Far Down" by James Kelly Duhon. VariousThis Is Real – Kent/Modern Deep Soul Treasures ... CD
Kent/Modern/P-Vine (Japan), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $36.99
A huge helping of deep soul tracks from the south – South California, that is – from the mighty Kent/Modern label, home to a huge amount of under-discovered music in the 60s! Modern first hit its stride recording R&B and blues in the postwar years – but during the 60s, the company continued as a strong indie, through its Kent label – with a real dedication to the sorts of sounds that were not getting as much exposure elsewhere! Kent recorded a fair bit of artists from points south and east – hitting the southern circuit to find talent as much as Atlantic Records – but they also allowed the artists to really do their own thing, and come up with standout styles that aren't nearly as hammered down into a single label signature approach. The result is a great blend of music, as you'll hear here on this 48 track set – overflowing with gems by Earl Wright, Ruth Davis, Robert Ramsey, Danny Monday, Jimmy Robins, Foxfire, Johnny Adams, Vernon Garrett, The Other Brothers, Bobby John, Billy Watkins, The Sims Twins, Willie Gauff & The Love Brothers, Freeman King, Jeanette Jones, and many more! Ace/Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $14.99 19.99
A fantastic collection of southern soul – not music from the big scenes of Memphis, Muscle Shoals, or New Orleans – but work from the southwest corner of Louisiana, most of which we've never heard before, yet which rival some of the greats of the time! The package is very heavy on tracks that appeared on the tiny Anla family of labels, mixed with other rare indie singles from the time – and the vibe here is very strongly in the deep soul mode, with slow-moving grooves that adapt plenty from blues to the world of 60s soul – while singers deliver these fantastic vocals with influences that are also definitely directed by gospel inspirations! The blend is great – cuts that go much deeper than work at Stax Records, but which is every bit as great – and as usual with Kent, the package has lots of details on the artists, the recordings, and the unique scene itself. Titles include "Soul Woman" by Camille Lil Bob, "Baby Oh Baby" by Charles Greene, "For The Good Times" by Johnny Truitt, "Without Love What Would Life Be" by Terrie & Joy La Roy, "Lonely Feeling" by Sticks Herman, "Why Did I Let You Go" by Chester Randle's Soul Senders, "Sea Of Love" by Freddie Love, "Our Love Will Always Be" by Lee Bernard, "One Man's Happiness" by Moody, "Blues For Men" by King Carl, "Don't Drive Me Deeper" by Lee Bernard, "Big Boys Cry" by Bobby Charles, "If You Love Me" by Clifton White & His Royal Knights, and "To Be Loved By You" by Soul Shouting Tommy. An excellent collection of rare jazz grooves – the special kind of tracks that effortlessly mix up influences and styles, with a result that makes each and every number a real standout in the set! This is the third volume in the series, and the mix of music is wonderful – tunes from artists who are definitely jazz, and who have sophistication that goes way past familiar funky modes – into territory that's often far-reaching, and influenced by spiritual modes – even though all the tracks have a great little groove! There's plenty of fantastic modal moments in the collection, and although the core energy of the package comes from the 70s underground jazz scene, there's also some great bits from other periods too. Titles include "Nepal" by Bjorn Alkes Kvartette, "Probuzeni" by Jazz Celula "Dawn" by Sangram, "Manteca" by Phineas Newborn Jr, "Pan African Ballet Music" by Karlton Hester & The Contemporary Jazz Art Movement, "Hasta La Victra Siempra" by Copa Salvo, "Impressions" by Stafford James Ensemble, "Middle Passage" by Tyrone Jefferson, "Aladdin's Carpet" by Beaver Harris, and "24 Carat" by Gabor Szabo. ✨✧ David AxelrodSeriously Deep ... CD
Polygram/Dusty Groove, 1975. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
First time ever on CD – a seminal reissue from Dusty Groove! CD

A host of rare cuts from Focus – the jazzy Dutch rock group of the 70s who were a surprising global hit at the time! The group are a bit different than their usual prog contemporaries – maybe it's the yodeling on their hit, but it's also the great flute work of Thijs Van Leer and guitar of Jan Akkerman, both players who were able to perfectly bridge jazz and prog – at a level that made the group's work appealing to audiences of both, but with a flavor that's all their own. Kent/Ace (UK), Late 60s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Who's Dave Godin, you ask? Why Dave's one of the most important people in helping soul music attain greater recognition around the globe – thanks to his tireless efforts working on the UK scene from the 60s onward – as a fan, a writer, and even a record label and store owner – all arenas in which he really helped define everything he found special in soul! And one of Dave's most particular strands was what he called "deep soul" – a mode that's similar to some of the hard-burning styles that were coming out of the south in the 60s, but which could also be handled from singers in any scene – just so long as they got the spirit right, and found the right way to put their fullest level of expression into the music! This collection is the first in a genre-defining series from Godin – and it's filled with tracks that ended up being huge discoveries, even to folks who thought they already knew soul music. The landmark set features 25 tracks in all – and titles include "I'm Never Gonna Live It Down" by the Knight Brothers, "Have a Little Mercy" by Jean Wells, "Showdown" by Kenny Carter, "I'm Not the One" by Larry Banks, "The Turning Point" by Jimmy Holiday, "It's Not the Last" by Reuben Bell & the Casanovas, "I Still Love You" by Jean Stanback, "Songs To Sing" by Raw Spitt, and "I Fell Like Cryin" by Sam & Bill. BBE (UK), Late 60s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible trip through the 70s Japanese jazz scene – a second volume of J Jazz that's even bigger and better than the first – with unknown gems from private presses, indie labels, and rarities from the Japanese branches of the major labels, too! Compilers Tony Higgins & Mike Peden (who are both also responsible for the nicely done notes) follow through on all of the things we loved about the first J Jazz compilation, but improve on it by going bigger and digging deeper. The majority of the tracks were recorded from 1969 through the late 70s – with a few recorded in later years – and all have a wonderful way of being open to the stylistic inventions of the time without getting hung up on trends. So while there's some fusiony funk and electric piano, there's plenty of acoustic instrumentation and timelessly inventive material. BBE has outdone themselves on this excellent collection – and titles include "Dragon Dance" by Makoto Terashita & Harold Land, "Daguri" by Kohsuke Mine Quintet, "Distant Thunder" by Mabumi Yamguchi Quartet, "Animal Garden" by Miyasaka + 5, "Mother Of The Future" by Electro Keyboard Orchestra, "Serenade To A Dimly Lit Street" by Hiroshi Matsumoto/Hideo Ichikawa Quartet, "Teru-Teru Bozu" (Black Keys) by Teru Sakamoto Trio, "Little Giant" by Nobuo & Sharps & Flats, "Brown Trout" by Akira Miyazawa and more – plus the CD bonus track "Original Bill" by Koichi Matsukaze Trio. 15 tracks on 2CDs. Jazzman/Now Again, Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Jazzman label hits a whole new level of brilliance – as they turn their funk-trained crate digging skills to the world of spiritual jazz! The collection's an amazing batch of ultra-rare tunes – tracks that take inspiration from the John Coltrane/Archie Shepp work on Impulse Records in the 60s, then run with those roots in bold new directions – soaring, spiritual aims in jazz that reach for new freedoms, but never lapse into the totally-outside modes of free jazz! Instead, there's a really great balance here between structure and struggle – as many tunes often have a good rhythmic pulse, usually modal and soulful, then let the horn solos stretch out more in their own sounds and directions. The mix is amazing, as is the selection of tunes – rare numbers pulled mostly from American independent jazz releases of the 60s and 70s – most of which are as obscure as the funky 45s we normally get from Jazzman. As with the label's US funk compilations, there's full notes on all the music – a heck of a lot of detail on these artists – and tracks on the set include "Paul's Ark" by Morris Wilson Beau Bailey Quintet, "Ayo Ayo Nene" by Mor Thiam, "Nomusa" by Ndikho Xaba & The Natives, "The Afrikan In Winter" by The Positive Force, "Neveen" by Salah Ragab, "Ja Mil" by Hastings Street Jazz Experience, "Be There" by Leon Gardner, "Psych City" by Ohio Penitentiary 511 Jazz Ensemble, "Introduction" by James Tatum Trio Plus, and "No Jive" by Frank Derrick Total Experience. High Note, 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
Brilliant late work from the unstoppable Cedar Walton – a sharp quartet record on High Note, also featuring the great Buster Williams on bass, plus younger players Vincent Herring on tenor and Willie Jones III on drums. It's great little set of numbers Walton has loved over the years, a few of his own excellent compositions plus gems by John Coltrane and Sonny Rollin. Cedar sounds as nimble on those keys as he has in years, working with producer Don Sickler, and legendary engineer Rudy Van Gelder was also in the booth for this set. Titles include "Voices Deep Within", "Memories Of You", "Dear Ruth", "Another Star","Something In Common", "Over The Rainbow", "Naima" and "No Moe". CD

✨✧ VariousEccentric Soul – The Deep City Label ... CD
Numero, Mid 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The mighty DKV trio is expanded here by the presence of Joe Morris on guitar – a fourth fantastic sonic element, alongside the bass of Kent Kessler, drums of Hamid Drake, and tenor of Ken Vandermark! The quartet begins the record with a great deal of energy, then things split off into various formations – a few trio and duo tracks which shift the mood and stylistic improvisations in a great way, and really show the open imaginations of all players as they creatively reassemble. Titles include the long "Telling Suite", plus "Standing Here", "Bit Tenet", "Infix", "Breathe Easily", and "Hollow Curve". CD

Black Saint (Italy), 1980s/1990s. New Copy 6CD ... Out Of Stock
The Black Saint/Soul Note label is perhaps best remembered for its work with American avant players, but it also gave plenty of Italian players some great exposure, too – as you'll hear in this excellent collection of work from pianist Enrico Pieranunzi! The set features 6 albums for the label by Pieranunzi – all beautifully remastered, and packaged in tiny record-type sleeves. First up is the lovely Isis (1981), a date that features excellent flugelhorn from Art Farmer, and alto from Massimo Urbani. Next are two trio dates, Deep Down (1987), with Joey Baron on drums and Marc Johnson on bass – and No Man's Land (1990), with Johnson on bass and Steve Houghton on drums. Flux & Change (1995) features some great duets between Pieranunzi's piano and the drums of Paul Motian – stretched out over short tracks wrapped up into three different "suites" of music. Pieranunzi returns to the trio on Seaward (1996), with Hein Van DeGeyn on bass and Andre Ceccarelli on drums – and Ma L'Amore No (1997) features the horns of Lee Konitz and Enrico Rava added to various tracks with a trio. 6 albums in all! ✨✧ SweetbottomAngels Of The Deep (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Elektra/Wounded Bird, 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A tight set of fusion from Sweetbottom – an American combo who definitely seem to draw a lot from the rock-inspired Euro fusion sound of a few years before! There's also a bit of the PM Records vibe – from the Steve Grossman/Gene Perla camp – lots of sharp, fast changes in the rhythms – and some heavy guitars at points, linking the group to Brand X a bit – and also some vocals on a few cuts, sure to please the rockish audiences who might be straying over to the fusion realm of the spectrum. The set's pretty sweet overall – tight, but without sounding slick – and the drums really drive some of the best numbers. Titles include "Veena Deva", "Monique", "Electro Strut", "Amazon Ritual", "Her", and "Shrapnel In My Ankle". CD also features 5 bonus tracks – "Slave Trader", and original indie versions of "Veena Deva", "Amazon Ritual", "Angels Of The Deep", and "Shrapnel In My Ankle". CD

Two fantastic bits of deep female soul – back to back on a single! Maxine Weldon is always great – but she really knocks it out of the park on "I'm The Other Half Of You" – a slow-stepping tune with great organ under the vocals – which superbly deliver the blue-tinged message of the tune! "You'd Better Be Good To My Baby" is an early Ashford & Simpson tune – given a great reading here by Peggy Woods! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Two rare tracks from the Scepter Records vaults! "Look My Way" has a groove that's different than some of the work that Maurice Williams cut with The Zodiacs – still his fantastic cresting lead, which brings plenty of feeling to the tune – but also a bit more romp in the rhythms, a sweet 60s soul sort of swing! Walter Wilson is great on "Not Now But Later" – a tune that has an iceman soul style that's very much in the Walter Jackson/Jerry Butler side of the spectrum – and top-shelf arrangements to match! 7-inch, Vinyl record

"Crying Clown" is a wonderful tune by a singer who definitely deserves greater discovery – as the great Eddie Parker has a completely heartbreaking way of delivering the lyric, as the whole tune slowly crests over a mellow groove! "Deserted Garden" is a beautiful tune by Sandra Richardson – a track that builds slowly, with almost a gospel-like inspiration – but with a much more personal message that Sandra carries off beautifully! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Cannonball AdderleyCannonball Adderley Quintet In San Francisco ... LP
Riverside, 1959. Very Good- ... $19.99
One of the greatest Cannonball Adderley albums from the Riverside years – a completely smoking live date recorded in San Francisco, often with long tracks that really let the group open up and do their thing! The lineup here is that classic one that first grabbed attention – the group with brother Nat on cornet, Sam Jones on bass, Louis Hayes on drums – and a young Bobby Timmons on piano, really cooking things up with tremendous drive, energy, and a sense of the groove! Titles include a great workout on Timmons' classic "This Here", plus originals "You Got It" and Spontaneous Combustion", and a great version of "Hi Fly". Soul jazz at its best, by one of the groups who gave the genre its name in the first place! LP, Vinyl record album

Cannonball AdderleyThem Dirty Blues ... LP
Riverside, 1960. Very Good ... $24.99
One of the all-time great ones by Cannonball! This record captures him in the prime of his early soul jazz fame – working with an unbelievably heavy quintet that featured Bobby Timmons on piano (with Barry Harris sitting in on a few tracks), Sam Jones on bass, Louis Hayes on drums, and brother Nat Adderley on cornet. The quintet forged a sound that made them an immediate hit – and which had their tight, jagged, soul-drenched sound getting copied by everyone. The record features some amazing soul jazz standards – like Nat's original version of "Work Song", the first-ever record of Timmons' amazing "Dat Dere", Cannon's slinky "Them Dirty Blues", and the jaunty groover "Jeannine", a wonderful cut by Duke Pearson that never sounded better! The CD features alternates of "Work Song" and "Dat Dere" – for a total of 9 tracks in all! LP, Vinyl record album
(Small blue label/silver text mono pressing, RLP 12-322, with microphone logo and deep groove. Cover has some light wear and a split top seam – but vinyl is nice and clean.)

John AddisonBridge Too Far (2CD version – with bonus tracks) ... CD
United Artists/Quartet (Spain), 1977. New Copy 2CDs ... $43.99
One of the greatest 70s moments from film composer John Addison – music scored for an all-star movie that was maybe a bit too all-star in the long run – but which features Addison really knocking it out of the park with the music! The vibe is more like the best 60s war dramas than you'd guess from the date – orchestrations that mix together bold passages of action with some more subtle dramatic moments – woodwinds and strings used by Addison with effortless ease, and often some nicely dark touches lurking in the deep backgrounds! Titles include "Human Roadblock", "Nijmegen Bridge", "Underground Resistance", "Before The Holocaust", "A Dutch Rhapsody", and "March Of The Paratroopers". 2CD edition – the original soundtrack album, plus a huge amount of bonus tracks – 35 more numbers from the original film recordings, wrapped up with very detailed notes as well! Jazzaggression, 2015. New Copy ... $11.99
A beautifully spiritual set of duets between bassist Teemu Akerblom and saxophonist Mike Zenger – playing together here without any other instrumentation at all! Akerblom sets things up in a modal mode on most numbers – but mellower, without any piano or drums – and Zenger then blows these long, soulful solos on alto sax and flute – the former with a tone that's often quite deep, with a great deal of feeling. Things get slightly more outside and improvised as the set moves on – a shift that gives the whole thing a bit of a loft jazz vibe – and titles include "Peaceful Mornings", "So One Has To Go", "Abstract Blues & The Truth", "Frozen Land", and "Aurajoen Rannoilla". Geri Allen/Charlie Haden/Paul MotianSegments ... CD
DIW (Japan), 1989. Used ... $18.99
Beautiful trio work from Geri Allen – recording here with a great group that features Paul Motian on drums and some especially great work from Charlie Haden on bass! Haden's bass really figures into the sound of most of the songs strongly – almost leading more than Allen's piano, with a sound that's round and deep-toned, and which really brings a great sense of soul to the set – which is then given a nicely punctuated vibe by Allen's strong piano! Motian, as you might expect, is nicely elliptical – able to move all around the kit, but without ever losing control – and although the performances get a bit outside at times, the whole thing's mostly got a strong sense of soul and a tight rhythmic core. Titles include "Law Years", "Segment", "La Pasionaria", "Rain", "Home", and "I'm All Smiles". CD

✨✧ AmanazAfrica ... CD
Now Again, 1975. New Copy 2 CDs ... $7.99 17.98
Wonderfully fuzzy work from Amanaz – one of the trippiest, headiest groups of the Zamrock scene of the 70s! The guitars here are very full and present – not at a hit you over the head jamming label, but with this rich sonic element that has lots of bassy undercurrents – at a level that makes the album a head-nodding gem all the way through – poised perfectly between some of the more psyche styles of the African scene of the time, and some of the more thoughtful singer-songwriter material. The group have a quality that's surprisingly deep – very soulful, and with a subtle power that comes through strongly – thanks to a mostly-English batch of lyrics (although a few tunes here are in their native Bemba.) No cuts are all-out funky, but all have this great slow-funk sort of charm – and titles include "I Am Very Far", "Sunday Morning", "Khala My Friend", "Green Apple", "Africa", "Making The Scene", "Easy Street", "Big Enough" and "Kale". 2CD package features a full bonus "reverb mix" of the album – even trippier! A hell of a great record from Ruby Andrews – a Chicago soul singer who started out sweet, but comes on hard and heavy on this righteous classic from the start of the 70s! The record's got a badass vibe you never would have expected from Andrews a few years before – with tremendous vocals, and these arrangements that are right on the money – and which pack a solid funky punch into nearly every tune! Brothers Of Soul provide the great backings – but Ruby's the clear star of the show, and works here in a deep soul style that blows us away every time we hear the record – and we've been listening to this one for more than a few decades. Wonderful all the way through – and with titles that include the funky classic "You Made A Believer Out Of Me", plus "Good N Plenty", "My Love Is Comin Down", "You Ole Boo Boo You", and "Overdose Of Love". Ashbury Stabbins Duo (Roy Ashbury/Larry Stabbins)Fire Without Bricks ... CD
Bead/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1977. New Copy ... $12.99 15.00
An overlooked gem from the British free jazz scene of the 70s – a set issued on the Bead Records label, and one that got very little circulation at the time – but which is equally as mindblowing as work from the period on labels like Ictus and Ogun! The duo here features Roy Ashbury on drums and percussion, and Larry Stabbins on soprano and tenor – working in this free, open space, but on tracks that are often shorter than album-length improvisations – which allows the players to stop a minute, take a breath, and move into these nicely varied moments of spontaneous creation! You might know Stabbins from later 80s work on more groove-oriented records – but here, he's a tremendousimproviser, with a sense for creative reedwork that might well rival his contemporary Evan Parker. Titles include "Puff", "Formants Of The Deep", "Wych Elm", "Fire Without Bricks", "Rough Cut", and "Maldoror". CD

Kylie AuldistThis Is What Happiness Looks Like ... LP
Soul Bank, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 20.99
Aussie singer Kylie Auldist first cut her teeth singing for deep funk groups – but on a set like this, it's clear that she's ready to step out and soar into a wide world of soulful modes! The record brings in more 80s styles than we've heard from Kylie before – some keyboards and beats that bubble and turn nicely with the catchy lyrics of the tunes – and, in a way, it might almost seem like the singer is even better suited to music like this than some of the harder funk that got her going in the first place! The record's got a lot of tasty crossover cuts that almost hit mid 80s Deniece Williams territory – and titles include "All Mine", "Lyb", "Just Show Me", "Fly", "I Get It", "Everythink", and "Stay In Front".
