David SanchezCarib ... CD
Melaza/Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 15.99
David Sanchez kicks off the album's liner notes with a great discussion on the African diaspora and its influence on music – one that's always been strongly felt in David's recordings, but which seems to come through even more strongly here! The record's definitely jazz, but borrows lots of rhythmic conceptions from around the globe – using a fair bit of percussion at the bottom of the sound, which is balanced nicely with strong, soulful tenor lines from Sanchez, waves of color on the guitar from Lage Lund, and a mix of piano and Fender Rhodes from Luis Perdomo! There's some especially great interplay between the angularity of the tenor and the warmer, rounder currents of the guitar – on titles that include "Madigra", "Wave Under Silk", "Mirage", "Fernando's Theme", "Canto", "Land Of The Hills", and "Iwa". Pat MethenyFrom This Place ... CD
Nonesuch, 2020. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
Guitarist Pat Metheny has a wonderful way of always opening himself up to new ideas, yet never losing the sound at his core – that unique approach to electric strings that made his ECM albums so revolutionary in the 70s, and which continues to set Metheny apart from anyone else around! There's plenty of that trademark Pat Metheny sound here to love, but there are also some great additions – vocals by Meshell N'degeocello on the album's title track, a tune that might well be Metheny's follow up to his "This Is Not America" collaboration with David Bowie many years back – plus some larger orchestrations handled beautifully by Joel McNeely, arranged by Alan Broadbent and Gil Goldstein. The core group features Gwyilym Simcock on piano, Linda May Han Oh on bass, and Antonio Sanchez on drums – and titles include "America Undefined", "Everything Explained", "Sixty Six", "Pathmaker", "Same River", and "Wide & Far". Also features the bonus track "Love May Take A While". CD

✨✧ SF Jazz CollectiveLive At The SF Jazz Center 2013 – Music of Chick Corea & New Compositions ... CD
SF Jazz, 2013. New Copy 2 CDs ... $24.99 35.00
The songs of Chick Corea were a hit with the rest of the jazz world, right from the start – subject to so many great reinterpretations, as is definitely the case here – as the SF Jazz Collective mix Chick's music with some great originals of their own! There's a soaring spirit to the performance that really lives up to the best Corea style of the early 70s – that generation when the keyboardist taught us all how to fly – thanks to tunes played here that include "Matrix", "Spain", "Rumble/City Gate", "Space Circus", "La Fiesta", and "500 Miles". The group also uses the vibes of Stefon Harris to evoke some of the Corea/Gary Burton collaborations – and the rest of the lineup includes Miguel Zenon on alto, David Sanchez on tenor, Avishai Cohen on trumpet, Robin Eubanks on trombone, Edward Simon on piano, Obed Calvaire on drums, and Matt Penman on bass. Nearly every member of the group contributed an original to the set, and titles include "Gibraltar", "Let's Take A Trip To The Sky", "Home Is", "Grand Opening", and "Incessant Desires". CD

SF Jazz, 2015. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
There's a whole generation of jazz musicians who wouldn't have been caught dead liking the music of Michael Jackson – and then there's a huge batch of artists who grew up with MJ, and find his grooves an undeniable influence on their sound! That's definitely the case here, as this all-star group do a wonderful job of reworking classics from a few different spots in Michael's career – all given fresh arrangements by group members who include pianist Edward Simon, vibist Warren Wolf, alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon, trumpeter Sean Jones, and tenorist David Sanchez! ✨✧ SF Jazz CollectiveLive At The SF Jazz Center 2016 – The Music Of Miles Davis & Original Compositions ... CD
SF Jazz, 2016. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Miles Davis is on the cover, but the record is definitely in the best spirit of the SF Jazz Collective – a group who are very open about their inspirations, but always take the music in very different, personal directions too! The set begins with a range of Miles Davis classics from a few generations, then moves into equally great original material from the group – presented in a way that maybe even acts as a blue print for what they were doing to the music of Miles! As usual, arrangements are all original, by members of the group – which includes work by Warren Wolf on vibes, David Sanchez on tenor, Sean Jones on trumpet, Miguel Zenon on alto, Robin Eubanks on trombone, and Edward Simon on bass – on titles that include "Nardis", "Tutu", "All Blues", "Teo", "Joshua", and "Bitches Brew" – plus "Tribe", "Canto", "Feel The Groove", "Hutcherson Hug", and "Shields Green". SF Jazz, 2018. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The music of Antonio Carlos Jobim gets some really wonderful treatment here – very far from the bossa roots of most of the tunes, in a free-flowing, highly creative set of arrangements by the members of the group – who then balance out the set with some of their own compositions as well! Jobim's music dominates the first half – arranged by vibist Warren Wolf, alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon, pianist Edward Simon, tenorist David Sanchez, and trombonist Robin Eubanks – who together really make some special magic with titles that include "Waters Of March", "Garoto", "Inutil Paisagem", "Retrato Em Branco E Preto", and "Chega De Saudade". ✨✧ SF Jazz CollectiveLive The At SF Jazz Center 2019 – Miles Davis In A Silent Way & Sly & The Family Stone Stand ... CD
SF Jazz, 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the coolest albums ever issued from this all-star group – a 50th anniversary tribute to two classic albums from 1969 – In A Silent Way by Miles Davis, and Stand by Sly & The Family Stone! The pairing is a great one – as Miles was listening to a lot of Sly in the late 60s, and the Family Stone were a key part of the SF scene at the time – but the group here makes the whole thing come across as way more than just a recasting of classics – because, like other tributes to their inspirations, the Collective have a really strong way of making things completely their own! Sly tracks alternate with Miles numbers – and vocals are handled by Martin Luther McCoy, who's worked with The Roots – in a group that also includes Warren Wolf on vibes, David Sanchez on tenor, Etienne Charles on trumpet, Adam Rogers on guitar, and Edward Simon on piano. The vocal tracks are nice and long – with a lot more jazz instrumentation than vocals – and titles include "I Want To Take You Higher", "Sex Machine", "In A Silent Way/It's About That Time", "Everyday People", 'You Can Make It If You Try", "Shh/Peaceful", and "Sing A Simple Song". Many of the tunes were composed with specific group performers in mind – and titles include "Grand Opening", "The Mystery Of Water", "Lingala", "2 & ", "No Filter", "Frontline", "Life At The End Of The Tunnel", "More To Give", and "Collective Overture". A great celebration of the first decade of this legendary jazz group – one that showcases compositions from some of its key members, mixed with original arrangements of music by John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Ornette Coleman, and Stevie Wonder! The octet is rock-solid throughout – a fantastically well-hewn group, with no ego getting in the way at all, even though a group like this could certainly boast plenty – given that the lineup includes David Sanchez on tenor, Miguel Zenon on alto, Avishai Cohen on trumpet, Robin Eubanks on trombone, Warren Wolf on vibes, and Edward Simon on piano. Titles include "Union", "Visions", "Moment's Notice", "And What If I Don't", "Alcatraz", "More Than Meets The Ear", and "Frosted Evils". CD
