✨✧ Dave Liebman & Joe LovanoCompassion – The Music Of John Coltrane ... CD
Resonance, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two saxophone giants who emerged in the post-Coltrane generation – both taking on the music of the master himself! The set features Dave Liebman and Joe Lovano going head to head in a wonderful way – playing for a BBC Jazz program, and really stretching out – not just on twin tenors, bot also with Liebman on soprano sax, c flute, and wood recorder – and Lovano on alto clarinet, Scottish flute, and aulochrome – all instruments that really help expand on the color palette of the Coltrane compositions! The rest of the group features Phil Markowitz on piano, Ron McClure on bass, and Billy Hart on drums – and although, since the set was recorded in 2007, it's not the same "vintage tapes" style as other Resonance releases, it's still got an equally crucial vibe – a key look at a musical moment that we might have otherwise missed. Titles include a very long take on "Compassion" – plus "Locomotion", "Ole", "Reverend King", "Equinox", and "Central Park West/Dear Lord". CD

David LiebmanDoin' It Again ... CD
Timeless (Germany), 1980. Used ... $12.99
An excellent set from reedman Dave Liebman – easily one of his most soulful from the 70s, thanks to some key currents in the group! John Scofield is on the session – playing guitar, but sometimes with this phrasing that almost feels more like a keyboard – especially in the way it layers into the rhythms from Ron McClure on bass and Adam Nussbaum on drums – who work with John to carve out these nicely chunky moments that allow Dave to really take off on tenor and soprano sax. The great Terumasa Hino is also in the combo – and his work on trumpet and flugelhorn is brilliant – this bold, flowing sense of color that really illuminates things – and without which, the album would be far less. Titles include "Cliff's Vibes", "Stardust", "Lady", and "Doin It Again". CD
(Original West German CD pressing.)

✨✧ Jimmy CobbSo Nobody Else Can Hear ... CD
Expansion (UK), 1983. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic album of mellow soul by jazz drummer Jimmy Cobb! Yes, that's right, the same Jimmy Cobb who played with Miles Davis in the 50s. This album's very different than Cobb's jazz work – and is a smooth album of jazzy soul, with a wonderfully warm vibe that sounds like some of the material on the Capitol Rare compilations. Nearly every track has vocals – either by the lovely Marilyn Redfield or by Gregory Hines – and the players on the album include jazz greats like Freddie Hubbard, Dave Liebman, Walter Booker, Larry Willis, Pee Wee Ellis, and others. Includes the jazzy stepper's classic "So Nobody Else Can Hear", plus "Pistachio", "Little Girl", "Remembering The Rain", "Spotlight", and "Cute". The original album is a super-rare vinyl only set, which makes this reissue even better to have! CD

Miles DavisOn The Corner ... CD
Columbia, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A sublime bit of Miles Davis electric funk – one of the best-remembered electric sets from the 70s, and for good reason too! The tracks are long, the jams are hard, and the whole thing has a lot more funk than some of the noise you'd get on other Miles albums of the time – thanks to killer keyboards from Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, guitar from John McLaughlin, and reeds from Dave Liebman – plus some standout drums from the legendary Jack DeJohnette – easily at the top of his powers here. These top-shelf players jam together beautifully – really cooking on the album's long tracks – "On The Corner" and "Helen Butte/Mr Freedom X" – and tightening up on the slightly shorter cuts "Black Satin" and "One & One". Terumasa HinoHino's Journey To Air ... LP
Love/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 39.99 About January 18, 2023
Trumpeter Terumasa Hino at a level that's quite different than most of his early work in Japan – recording in New York, and using a very spiritual approach – one that's clearly influenced by some of the other players in the session! The album features one long track – a bit improvised, and almost free at times – but also given a strong sense of direction, too – that balance between completely unbridled expression and structure that can make some of the best spiritual jazz sessions so great! Hino's on trumpet, and also plays some flugelhorn – and other players include Steve Grossman on tenor and flute, Pete Yellin on alto and flute, Dave Liebman on alto and tenor, Olu Dara on trumpet, Bob Moses on drums, Dave Holland on bass, and Mike Garson on piano and Fender Rhodes. ✨✧ Elvin JonesGenesis ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Elvin Jones rose to fame in the company of one of the greatest saxophone players ever – the mighty John Coltrane – and his post-Coltrane work like this really continues a keen respect for the role of the reeds in jazz – and really does a lot to push it forward as well! There's a compelling edge to the record that's light years from Elvin's work with Coltrane – a completely new sensibility that can be spacious one minute, extremely powerful the next – and quite possibly realized to its fullest potential here, thanks to the mindblowing contributions of Dave Liebman on tenor and soprano sax, Frank Foster on tenor and flute, and Joe Farrell on alto and soprano sax. All three players work together on each track – and all shift reeds throughout the session – opening up majestically with inspiration from Elvin's drums, and some wonderful work from Gene Perla on bass. The sound is beyond easy categorization or simple style – and the record's filled with wonderful titles that include "PP Phoenix", "For All The Other Times", "Three Card Monty", and "Cecilia Is Love". Elvin JonesMerry Go Round ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A gem of an Elvin Jones session – quite different than most of his other work from the time! The album's got Elvin working with a larger group of mixed electric and acoustic players – with Chick Corea on piano and electric piano, Yoshiaki Masuo on guitar, Gene Perla on electric and acoustic bass, Dave Liebman and Joe Farrell on saxes, Steve Grossman on tenor, Don Alias on conga, and Pepper Adams on baritone sax. The tracks are shorter and gentler than some of Jones' other full-on work from the time – with some great light rhythms, sweet melodies, and a slight bit of funk mixed into the grooves. All in all, the album's a wonderful batch of tunes – really memorable, with plenty of great moments that we might have missed otherwise! Titles include "Who's Afraid", "La Fiesta", "A Time For Love", "Lungs", and "Brite Piece". CD

Abbey LincolnPeople In Me ... LP
Inner City, 1978. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $9.99 14.99
A great session that was recorded in Tokyo in 1973 – featuring Abbey backed by a small group that includes Dave Liebman on sax and flute, Al Foster on drums, and Hiromasa Suzuki on piano. The record's pretty darn hip – and it's a nice version of Abbey's haunting approach to vocal jazz, touched by some of the new directions vocalists were going at the time, yet firmly rooted in the firm command of voice and emotion heard on Lincoln's best records from the early 60s. Titles include "Africa", "You & Me & Love", "Naturally", "Living Room", and "Natas", which seems to have Abbey singing along with overdubs of her own voice, to very cool effect! ✨✧ Elvin JonesMain Force ... CD
Vanguard/Wounded Bird, 1976. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Drummer Elvin Jones is listed as the main force on the cover – but as with all of his 70s albums, the whole outing is very much a strong group affair – thanks to a killer core quartet that features Ryo Kawasaki on guitar, Pat LaBarbera on reeds and Dave Williams on bass – working with a great blend of sax and guitar that really helps refine the Elvin Jones sound of the 70s! As with other records by Elvin, there's some great guest work too – reeds from a shifting lineup that includes Dave Liebman, Frank Foster, and Steve Grossman – providing that wailing intensity that Elvin sought after the passing of Coltrane, but in a fresh new way – and Albert Dailey also adds in some sweet keyboards as well. Titles include "Salty Iron", "Sweet Mama", "Mini Modes", "Philomene", and "Song Of Rejoicing After Returning From A Hunt". CD

✨✧ Jamie SaftHidden Corners ... CD
Rare Noise (UK), 2019. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Pianist Jamie Saft is building up a great name as a collaborator with older jazz musicians – really finding a way to unlock the best aspects, or "hidden corners", of their talents – and that's definitely the case here, in a very fluid quartet setting with the great Dave Liebman on tenor, soprano sax, and flute! As with other recent recordings, there's a spiritual current to Jamie's work on the piano that's really great – sometimes free, sometimes modal – given strong support from Bradley Christopher Jones on bass and Hamid Drake on drums – the latter of whom is amazingly at home on the session, which stands as just one more feather in his very mighty cap. Liebman sounds more soulful and expressive than we've heard in years – really giving his all to the performance – and titles include "Hidden Corners", "Turn At Every Moment", "Landrace", "The Anteroom", "231 Gates", "Seven Are Double", and "Positive Way".
