Dave GoldHeaven On Their Minds (180 gram pressing – with download) ... LP
My Only Desire (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $12.99 24.99
Unreleased work from the BBC Archives of the 70s – a stunning large group session with a very groovy vibe! Dave Gold isn't as much of a giant as some of the other British leaders of the time – but he's got a wonderful way with the group here, and makes the music move with some of the funky currents that he brought to his work for the KPM Sound Library – where you might know Dave from some key albums! Gold was also working as the leader of the jazzy group on a production of Jesus Christ Superstar – and he has the lineup here take off on a soaring funky version of that show's "Heaven On Their Minds" – a great cut that's worth the price of admission alone, served up with a mix of tenor and flute from Brian Ashe, baritone from Ronnie Ross, electric piano from Cliff Hall, and guitar from John Girvan – amidst a larger group of trumpets, trombones, and alto saxes. Other cuts include the gold originals "O'Connell Street" and "Nostalgia" – both groovy tracks with an MPS big band vibe – plus a version of the Jimmy Webb tune "Pocketful Of Keys". Jared GoldReemergence ... CD
Strikezone, 2018. New Copy ... $8.99 15.99
Contemporary Hammond giant Jared Gold hardly needs to reemerge – as all of his albums in recent years have been completely top-shelf – and have really marked the musician as one of the best jazz organ talents around! Here, Gold certain reaffirms that reputation – working with amazing deftness that calls to mind the quick changes on the keys that Don Patterson brought to jazz organ work in the late 60s, mixed maybe with a bit of the soaring flow of Larry Young at the same time! The trio is super-tight too – and features the great Billy Hart on drums, and frequent partner Dave Stryker on guitar – plus guest trumpet work from Jeremy Pelt on three tracks, really giving the album a great layer of color with his tone. Titles include "Lookin For Another Pure Love", "One For John A", "She's Leaving Home", "Nomad", "Blues Connotation", "Reemergence", and "It Ain't Necessarily So". CD

✨✧ Dave BrubeckJazz At Oberlin (SACD pressing) ... CD
Fantasy, 1953. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic album from Dave – recorded at Oberlin College, the mid-Ohio haven of bohemiana, and a growing hotbed of jazz activity centered around students in the college's conservatory of music. Dave and crew made the trip at the request of the kids – breaking from their mostly San Francisco-based recording career to cut what would end up becoming a very successful album in Dave's catalog, and begin a whole "at" or "goes to" series in his career. The group's the early quartet with Paul Desmond, Lloyd Davis, and Ron Crotty – and tunes include long and jamming versions of "The Way You Look Tonight", "How High The Moon", and "Stardust". CD
(Out of print, gold hybrid SACD pressing – works on regular players too!)

✨✧ Tim BuckleyDream Belongs To Me – Rare & Unreleased Recordings 1968 to 1973 (gold vinyl pressing) ... LP
Manifesto/Real Gone, 1968/1973. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic material from Tim Buckley – rare tracks recorded in 1968 and 1973, both presenting two different slices of his too-short career – and standing together as a great addition to his too-small catalog of recorded work! The first half features small sessions from 1968 – with Tim on those amazing vocals of his and Lee Underwood on lead guitar – plus a bit of vibes from Dave Friedman, in a manner that echoes the great use of that instrument on his Elektra albums of the late 60s. The songs are dreamy, open, and have that sublime blend of blueness and flow that really set Tim apart from his contemporaries – titles that include "Danang", "Happy Time", "Buzzin Fly", "Song To The Siren", and "Ashbury Park" – all done in unusual versions. The second half of the record features material recorded in 1973 – songs that are a bit more tight, with more of an overall group feel – almost jamming in the way the whole thing comes together! 1973 titles include versions of "Honey Man", "Falling Timber", "Quicksand", "Stone In Love", "Sefronia", "Because Of You", and "The Dream Belongs To Me". ✨✧ Dave StrykerBaker's Circle ... CD
Strikezone, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really fantastic record from guitarist Dave Stryker – a set that shows just how much he's grown in recent years as a player, and how responsive he is to the talents of other musicians in the group! Here, that group is a tremendous one – with Jared Gold on Hammond, Walter Smith III on tenor, and McClenty Hunter on drums – a combo that's locked up tight, and totally on the money – playing soulfully, but with lots of modern touches too – as Smith and Gold come together with the fluidity of Joe Henderson and Larry Young back in the day! Stryker's solos are strong, but he's also the kind of leader who's nicely focused on the overall sound of the group – which also includes percussion from Mayra Casales on a few cuts. Titles include "Rush Hour", "Baker's Circle", "Tough", "El Camino", "Dreamsong", and a nice take on "Inner City Blues". CD

✨✧ Dave StrykerEight Track III ... CD
Strikezone, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Guitarist Dave Stryker has a great lineup here – a quartet with Stefon Harris on vibes, Jared Gold on Hammond, and McClenty Hunter on drums – all musicians we really love as leaders on their own, and who bring plenty to this session with Stryker! The mix of guitar, organ, and vibes is great – occasionally augmented by percussion from Mayra Casals, which opens up the groove even more – as Dave and the group work their way through a host of 70s soul and funk classics, but in ways that are a lot more jazz overall, and never slavishly retro to their roots – unlike other records of this nature. Titles include "Pretzel Logic", "Too High", "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", "After The Dance", "Joy Inside My Tears", "Move On Up", and "Papa Was A Rolling Stone". CD

VariousRock & Roll Music – The Songs Of Chuck Berry ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/1960s/1970s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Chuck Berry may have been a hell of a hitmaker on his own – but he also helped lots of other folks hit the heights, too – thanks to the fantastic songs he penned over the years! Berry's original versions are the stuff of early rock and roll gold – but the tunes here take off in all sorts of directions – from rockabilly to country, garage, psych, soul, and even a bit of folk as well – served up by a surprisingly large amount of artists you might not never associate with Chuck's music! The package is definitely one of the most striking in the "songwriter" series from Ace Records – and like the others, it's done with a similar sort of depth – including notes on all the many unusual records included in the collection. Titles include "Roll Over Beethoven" by Helen Dixon, "Around & Around" by Swinging Blue Jeans, "Nadine" by The Bunch, "I'm Talking About You" by The Remains, "Oh Baby Doll" by The Pretty Things, "Come On" by Ian Gomm, "Memphis" by Don Covay, "You Never Can Tell" by John Prine, "The Promised Land" by Dave Edmunds, "Beautiful Delilah" by The Count Bishops, "Back In The USA" by MC5, "You Can't Catch Me" by Sleepy LaBeef, "Sweet Little Sixteen" by The Hollies, "Almost Grown" by Syndicate Of Sound, "Too Much Monkey Business" by Elvis Presley, and "No Money Down" by John Hammond. ✨✧ VariousNew Jazz Festival Balver Hohle – New Jazz 1976 & 1977 (8CD set) ... CD
Be! (Germany), 1976/1977. New Copy 8CD ... Out Of Stock
A heck of a collection – and one that really gets at the amazing array of free-thinking jazz that was brewing up on the European scene during the 70s! The set brings together over eight hours of music recorded during two years of this legendary festival – and each new disc has some great surprises along the way! There's some possibly more familiar material here – such as long improvisations that include a solo piano performance by Joachim Kuhn, two by a Mal Waldron trio with Jimmy Woode on bass and Allen Blairman on drums, one by a trio headed by pianist Yosuke Yamashita and with Akira Sakata on alto, two more by the duo of Peter Brotzmann on tenor and Han Bennink on drums, and a final two long improvisations by a great Archie Shepp gruop with Richard Greenlee on trombone, Dave Burell on piano, Cameron Brown on bass, and Beaver Harris on drums! Yet that's only the tip of the iceberg – as there's a full CD of music by a group led by Hugo Heredia on saxes and flute – with Horace Parlan on piano, Dodo Goys on bass, Tullio D'Piscopo on drums, and Mandrake Ivanir Do Nascimento on percussion. And there's another CD that features an hour-long improvisation by a version of the Willem Breuker Kollektief with Leo Cuypers on piano, Maarten Van Norden on tenor, Boy Raaymakers on trumpet, and Bernhard Hunnekink and Willem Van Manen on trombones. There's also a very long track by a cool quartet headed by Polish alto giant Zbigniew Namyslowski – and one more by the French Machi Oul Big Band. There's also tracks by Riot, with Uli Beckerhoff on trumpet; Grumpff with Michael Schlaper on tenor and soprano, and Ekkehard Jost on baritone; Mumps with Albert Mangelsdorff on trombone and John Surman on tenor; and the Eddie Prevost Quartet with Geoff Hawkins on tenor and Gerry Gold on trumpet. And last but not least are two long trcks by the Czech group Celula Jazz Crew – with Laco Deczi on trumpet, Karel Ruzicka on electric piano, and Svatopluc Kosvanec on trombone. Phew – that's a lot of music, and the whole thing comes in a very cool 10" box set, complete with a booklet of notes, too! CD

✨✧ VariousSounds Of The Times – From The KPM & Conroy Music Libraries 1970 to 1977 ... CD
KPM/Vocalion (UK), 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A treasure trove of Brit sound library work – most of it from the legendary KPM 1000 Series, plus assorted bits from the Conroy label as well! The work here leans heavily towards funky jazz – those fuzzy, hard-driving tunes that always made KPM sides a key choice for action films and cop shows – and which have made digging through sound library records such a delight all these many decades later! The compilers did a really wonderful job with this set – creating a feel that's a bit different than the usual sound library collection – because although funky overall, the package also features some jazzy moments too – key cuts that are interspersed with the action moments to create a really fleshed-out sense of mood and feeling. Plus, the set list is huge – 25 tracks in all, running for well over 70 minutes – truly the treasure trove we promised at the start of this review, with titles that include "Soul For Sale" and "Tycoon" by Keith Mansfield, "Block Buster" and "Head In The Clouds" by Johnny Pearson, "Loco Motion" and "Soul Foot Strut" by Dave Gold, "Traffic" and "Challenger" by Alan Hawkshaw, "Short Cut" by James Clarke, "Heavy Traffic" by James Cameron, "Speculation" by David Lindup, "Vegas To LA" by Dick Doerschuk, "Tough Assignment" by Chris Gunning, "Speedway" by Nick Ingman, "String Boogie" by Brian Bennett, and "The Double Take" by Steve Gray. ✨✧ Nikki SuddenBible Belt (2CD edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Flicknife/Troubadour, 1983. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
The first magnificent pairing of Nikki Sudden and Dave Kusworth – a set that's issued under Nikki's name, but which has all the magical energy of their Jacobites recordings together! There's an instantly timeless feel going on here – almost an indie punk refiguration of the best ideas of The Rolling Stones and other giants of the years before – but stripped down into a personal quality that's far more moving – and which almost makes you feel like you've stumbled upon some lost demo recordings from unknown friends of Mick and Keith. But that's only part of the picture, too – as the album's got a great sense of variety – including some female vocals at a few points – all to grace a great run of tracks that include "Six Hip Princes", "Gold Painted Nails", "Cathy", "Chelsea Embankment", "The Road Of Broken Dreams", "The Only Boy In Heaven", and "English Girls". Great 2CD edition – features early sessions from May of 1982 – with titles that include different versions of "Out Of Egypt", "Every Girl Cuts Me In Half", "Feels So Right", "Bethlehem Castle", "Cathy", "The Angels Are Calling", and "Missionary Boy". Dave ThompsonGoldmine Jazz Album Price Guide – 3rd Edition ... Book
Goldmine, 2016. New Copy ... $7.99 27.99
An overstuffed edition of the Goldmine Jazz Price Guide – filled with great information! First off – forget the prices in this one, because we hate price guides, and we don't suggest that they actually have any correspondence to the real world – because people buy records at all different prices, for different reasons. HOWEVER, this is a great little book filled with useful data on jazz releases – and we find it to be an excellent resource when we need to look up details of work by specific artists – maybe more like a discography than an actual guide to pricing records. The book does have some holes and mistakes – but there's a heck of a lot of useful information in here, especially if you have questions like "What year did that come out?", "What label was that on?", "Which record was first in his career?" We're surprised at how many listings we can find for key albums – and the book's especially helpful for figuring out releases that seem to have a sly history of reappearing on the market! There's also a helpful section on different jazz labels and pressings, and the book is 506 pages, softcover, with lots of black and white illustrations – and listings for over 40,000 titles! Book

Dave ThompsonGoldmine Record Album Price Guide – 8th Edition ... Book
Goldmine, 2015. New Copy ... $7.99 27.99
A really useful little book – as long as you don't pay attention to the prices! Instead, think of this one as a discography of records worth collecting – hundreds of pages, with tens of thousands of listings – all with release dates, labels, and catalog numbers! In the pre-Discogs years, this kind of book was essential for getting raw data – and even now, it's pretty darn incredible to have all this information at your fingertips without having to click around a bunch of screens – just flipping page after page of listings on records in many different genres – with over 100,000 listings that begin in the earliest days of the LP, up on through the end of the 20th Century. The book is a very heavy 704 pages, softcover, and has a small amount of black and white images. And oh yeah – The Prices! They are mostly out of date, and pretty inflated – so don't trust them at all – just use the book for the data on records, and you'll find plenty to enjoy. Book

✨✧ Dave ThompsonGoldmine's Essential Guide to Record Collecting ... Book
Goldmine, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A surprisingly nice book – one we thought would be a bit simplistic and hokey at first, but which is filled with information that really appeals to our record-tuned minds! The book's designed for beginners, but it's also got lots of cool sections with discographical details – laid out alongside bigger chapters on the evolution of vinyl, record collecting trends, and other details that the author delivers in a great way – maybe no surprise, as Dave Thompson's been behind other Goldmine books in the past. There's also plenty of black and white images throughout – to illuminate the different themes of different chapters. As always, we say to steer clear of the prices – they often mean little in terms of an ever-changing market, and are usually overinflated – but there's plenty more to enjoy within. Softcover, 238 pages, filled with black and white images. Book

Pino Palladino & Blake MillsNotes With Attachments ... LP
Impulse, 2021. New Copy ... $23.99 25.99
Nice stuff – a much richer album than you might guess from the cover and title! Pino Palladino and Blake Mills have a way of making some wonderfully fresh sounds here – Palladino on a variety of basses, and Mills on reeds, guitars, and a whole host of other instruments too! The music is jazz, but of the sort that goes most strongly for the overall sound of the group's output – maybe reaching forth past the sonic experiments of early ECM, but with a very contemporary vibe, and a spirit that's much more varied and filled with surprise overall! Players shift as much as the instruments from track to track – and the set features work from Sam Gendel on poly sax (which sounds great!), plus Larry Golding on flutes and mellotron sax, Marcus Strickland on bass clarinet, and Chris Dave on drums and percussion. The sound is great – very unique, in ways that are hard to describe easily in words – with titles that include "Soundwalk", "Man From Molise", "Djurkel", "Off The Cuff", "Notes With Attachments", and "Ekute". BGP (UK), Mid 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $18.99 24.99
A masterful set of old school funk & soul put together by DJ Andy Smith – who also worked some magic a few years back for the BGP label on the Northern Soul tip – this time out doing his thing with prime funk from the late 60s & early 70s! Smith does a excellent job of mixing sample classics that helped build golden age hip hop, many deeper tracks – funk nuggets from The Blackbyrds, Billy Garner, Funk Inc, Spanky Wilson and many more! Vinyl version is not a continous mix like the CD – and works as a straight up, excellent funky compilation. Titles include "Cracklin' Bread" by Dave Hamilton, "It's My Thing"by Betty Moorer, "I Don't Know What It Is But It Sure Is Funky" by Ripple, "I Got Some" by Billy Garner", "Can't Get Enough" by 87th Of Broadway, "Skunk Juice" by Pazant Brothers, "I'm A Good Woman" by The Generation", "Tighten Up" by Roosevelt Matthews and more. 24 tracks on 2LPs.
