Dave DouglasOvercome (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Greenleaf, 2022. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
A set whose origin is partly hinted at by its title – as trumpeter Dave Douglas initially wanted to create a new interpolation of the classic anthem "We Shall Overcome" – then expanded on the energy of that collaboration to create a whole album in a similarly righteous style! The set features key vocal contributions from singers Camila Meza and Fay Victor – and Douglas' trumpet is balanced nicely with trombone from Ryan Keberle – as the players resonate with a the tones of a larger ensemble at moments, while still stepping forth individually too. Meza adds in guitar, and the rest of the group features Jorge Roeder on bass and Rudy Royston on drums – on titles that include "We Shall Overcome", "Good Trouble For John Lewis", "Peace", "When We Are Together Again", and "Perspective". Greenleaf, 2022. Used ... $9.99
A really beautiful project from trumpeter Dave Douglas – an artist who lately seems as if he's even better than usual when he's got a special idea behind a record! That's definitely the case here – as Douglas works with inspiration from a medieval mural in Ghent – used for both the secular and spiritual currents that run through the music in a beautiful way – with Dave's instrument blended with pump organ and prepared piano from Marta Warelis, guitars and lute from Frederik Leroux, and cello from Tomeka Reid – plus use of "serpent" and tuba by Berlinde Deman, who also vocalizes a bit next to Douglas. Lander Gyselinck moves between drums and electronics – the latter of which are used in nicely subtle ways – and titles include "Instrumental Angels", "Mercy", "Arrival", "Hermits & Pilgrims", "Righteous Judges", and "Ah Moon". ✨✧ Dave DouglasTime Travel ... CD
Greenleaf, 2013. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the best albums we've heard in years from trumpeter Dave Douglas – a really in the pocket session that's filled with rhythmic intensity, and some of the boldest music we've heard from Dave in years! There's plenty of edges to the set – especially the trumpet of Douglas and tenor of Jon Irabgon – but there's also a groove to many numbers too – a kind of forward-rolling energy that really takes the whole thing to great points throughout the set, and which makes a great progression from the somber tone of Dave's last album – almost a musical rebirth of sorts! Crack rhythms flow from the trio of Matt Mitchell on piano, Linda Oh on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums – and titles include "Time Travel", "Beware Of Doug", "Little Feet", "Garden State", and "Bridge To Nowhere". Joe Lovano & Dave Douglas SoundprintsOther Worlds (180 gram pressing – with download) (2022 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Greenleaf, 2021. New Copy 2LP ... On November 25, 2022
There's a wonderful combination of horns going on here – the trumpet of Dave Douglas and tenor of Joe Lovano – sounding maybe even better on this album than on their previous efforts together! Both artists have this really cascading sense of sound in this setting – notes that seem to spill out effortlessly from their horns together, finding all the right spaces and spots next to each other – and shaded in with work from Lawrence Fields on piano, Linda May Han Oh on bass, and Joey Baron on drums – a group of equally free-thinking players who match and expand the unusual changes going on in the music. All titles are original – and tracks include "Life On Earth", "Space Exploration", "Shooting Stars", "Midnight March", "Pythagoras", "Sky Miles", "The Flight", and "Antiquity To Outer Space". (Note: This item is not for sale online until 7:00am on Saturday, November 26. Arabesque Jazz, 1998. Used ... Out Of Stock
A killer set from the Dave Douglas Quartet – a very unified sound from the lineup that features Douglas on trumpet, Chris Potter on tenor, James Genus on bass, and Ben Perowsky on drums! Working here without any piano, the four have a way of folding into a groove together beautifully – really layering their sound, and coming up with something wonderful – as full of tone and texture as Douglas' more laidback recordings, but handled with a rhythmic pulse that really sends the whole thing soaring! Titles include "Everyman", "Magic Triangle", "Padded Cell", "Circular", "Coaster", "Barrage", "The Ghost", and "Kisangi". CD

✨✧ Dave DouglasSingle Sky ... CD
Greenleaf, 2009. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful big band project from trumpeter Dave Douglas – done in close collaboration with Jim McNeely, acting as artist in residence and conductor for the Frankfurt Radio Big Band! The ensemble's got a hell of an artistic approach – and they work perfectly here in re-imagining Douglas' music for a larger group – partly with help from Douglas on a few tracks penned specifically for big band, but also with key direction from McNeely, who rearranged some of the others. Dave gets in some strong solos on the date – but other standout players include Staffan Weber and Oliver Leicht on reeds, Peter Feil and Christian Jaksjo on trombones, and Tony Lakatos on tenor and flute. Titles include "A Single Sky", "Persistence Of Memory", "Blockbuster", "Bury Me Standing", "The Presidents", and "Campaign Trail". CD

Rez Abbasi, Sheryl Bailey, Peter Bernstein, & OthersHonoring Pat Martino Vol 1 ... CD
High Note, 2022. Used ... $11.99
A host of great guitarists, all coming together to pay tribute to one of their own – the mighty Pat Martino, an artist on the strings from his early years in the 60s in organ combos, through his very creative 70s material, into a great run of albums in later years too! Pat's memory is in great company here – on tunes that have a nicely lean vibe, and really allow for plenty of space for guitar solos – sometimes with two artists in the lineup, shifting their sound nicely – sometimes just a single player on the cut, depending on the tune! Most tracks feature the same group on rhythm – Kevin Kozol on keyboards, Dezron Douglas on bass, and Allan Mednard on drums – and titles include "Inside Out" with Adam Rogers and Peter Bernstein, "Black Glass" with Kurt Rosenwinkel, "Line Games" with Fareed Haque, "Joyous Lake" with Nir Felder and Oz Noy, "Noshufuru" with Rez Abbasi and Jeff Miles, "Willow" with Ed Cherry and Sheryl Bailey, "Lament" with Russell Malone, "Country Road" with Jeff Harrison, and "On The Stairs" with Dave Stryker and Paul Bollenback. SF Jazz CollectiveLive 2007 – 4th Annual Concert Tour – Original Compositions & Works By Thelonious Monk ... CD
SF Jazz, 2007. Used 2 CDs ... $29.99
Only the fourth year of this amazing all-star group – and they've already got their own sound so strongly in place, they really make some fresh magic with the music of Thelonious Monk! Arrangements of Monk tunes are by different members of the group – pianist Renee Rosnes, trumpeter Dave Douglas, bassist Matt Penman, drummer Eric Harland, tenorist Joshua Redman, and alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon – who work here alongside the vibes of Bobby Hutcherson in some stunning remakes of "Oska T", "I Mean You", "Ugly Beauty", "Bye Ya", "Criss Cross", "Brilliant Corners", and "Bright Mississippi" – handled by the octet in a style that reminds us of some of Monk's late 50s larger group work on Riverside. The set also features a full dose of original compositions – the long "San Francisco Suite", plus "Union", "Lion's Gate", "Life At The End Of The Tunnel", and "Haast Pass". CD

Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2019. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 22.99
A brilliant series of creative performances pulled from Option – a weekly music salon hosted organized by Chicago avant jazz talents Ken Vandermark, Tim Daisy, and Andrew Clinkman – featuring contributions from some of their greatest contemporaries, and a few older legends too! Most of the material here is free improvisation, but the scope is also nicely wide – with a mix of elements that really keeps things interesting, and which also makes for a hell of a double-length record, even if you don't care at all about the weekly event! The set features performances by Susan Alcorn on steel guitar, Wayne Horvitz on piano with Sara Schoenbeck on bassoon, Ladonna Smith on violin and vocals, Havard Wilk on piano, Gerry Hemingway on percussion and electronics, Lou Mallozzi on electronics and turntables with Douglas Ewart on reeds and percussion, Greg Kelly on trumpet, Bonnie Jones on electronics, Ingrid Laubrock on tenor, Kris Davis on piano, Sandy Ewen on guitar, Louise Dam Eckerdt Jensen on alto and Kent Kessler on bass, and the trio of Booker Stardrum on percussion, Beth McDonald on tuba, and Dave Rempis on alto.
