Darius JonesLegend Of E'Boi – The Hypervigilant Eye (with bonus download) ... LP
Aum Fidelity, 2024. New Copy ... $21.99 24.98
Maybe one of the most burning albums we've ever heard from Darius Jones – a set that's done as a stripped-down trio – with the drums of Gerald Cleaver and bass of Chris Lightcap next to Jones' really wonderful work on alto! At times, the record has a freewheeling energy that takes us back to Sonny Rollins' use of such format – but that's balanced with the more compositional side of the leader – who delivers some fantastic song structures that serve as beautiful vehicles for the individual expression of each musician! The set's the 7th chapter of Jones' Man'ish Boy series, but definitely stands strongly on its own – with titles that include "Another Kind Of Forever", "We Inside Now", "Motherfuckin Roosevelt", "Affirmation Needed", and "We Outside". (Download card features the album, plus additional bonus tracks!)

✨✧ Darius JonesFluxit Vancouver – Its Suite But Sacred ... CD
Northern Spy, 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Some of the most intense work we've ever heard from composer/reedman Darius Jones – a set of longer works, recorded live in Vancouver – with a style that mixes core jazz instrumentation with some added string elements that really send things over the top! There's plenty of free improvisation going on here – and the alto of Jones sounds especially nice next to the skittish drums of Gerald Cleaver – as the duo find strong interplay with the work of Jesse and Josh Zubot on violins, Peggy Lee on cello, and James Meger on bass! All the string instruments are hardly any sort of string quartet – and instead, they come across with those freer improv modes unlocked during the loft jazz generation of the 70s – really exploding here with a sense of united majesty and individual expression. Titles include "Zubot", "Damon & Pythias", "Rainbow", and "Fluxus V5T 1S1". CD

We JazzIssue #9 – Oisters ... Magazine
WeJazz (Finland), 2023. New Copy ... $18.99 28.99
There's never been a magazine like this – a publication that seems to cover jazz of the past and the future with equal enthusiasm – and which has a way of making everything come together in a wonderfully vivid way! As with previous issues, the choice of subjects seems very close to our own hearts – as a mix of great writers take on artists who include Petter Eldh, Shabaka Hutchings, Jason Moran, Darius Jones, Sven Wunder, and spiritual reedman Carlos Garnett – while also looking at the Sounds Of Freedom residency, and the cool Hip Holland Hip record as well! Speaking of records, Mats Gustafsson turns in a great entry of his Discaholic column – which is then followed by pages of great reviews of other jazz treasures from the past and present. The whole magazine is done in a book-style format – squarebound, 128 pages, very little ads, and cool color images throughout! Magazine

✨✧ William ParkerEssence Of Ellington – Live In Milano ... CD
Aum Fidelity/Centering, 2012. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The essence of Duke Ellington – but in the hands of William Parker, it's a very different thing than you might expect! The group here is larger than usual for Parker – a great ensemble used in ways that definitely echo some of Ellington's more inventive scoring, especially his mature use of tone and color – yet both the solos and ensemble moments go way way farther than anything the Duke might have imagined – all the bold, righteous brilliance that we've come to love in Parker's own recordings – focused back on one of his greatest inspirations. The lineup is quite impressive – as musicians include Roy Campbell on trumpet, Ras Moshe on tenor and soprano, Rob Brown and Darius Jones on alto, Sabir Mateen on clarinet and tenor, Steve Swell on trombone, Dave Burrell on piano, Hamid Drake on drums, and Parker himself on bass – and titles include "Take The Coltrane", "Essence Of Sophisticated Lady/Sophisticated Lady", "Caravan", "Essence Of Ellington", "Take The A Train/Ebony Interlude", and "Portrait Of Louisiana". ✨✧ Red Hot & Ra (Meshell Ndegeocello)Magic City ... LP
Red Hot, 2024. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the coolest album so far in the Red Hot series – even amidst the unique Sun Ra subgroup – as the album's the brainchild of Meshell Ndegeocello, and comes together with all the complex soulfulness of her own recent albums! Back in the 90s, Meshell was a great but more mainstream soul artist – and over the years, she's developed into a really fascinating talent – one able to reach out with a complex blend of jazz, funk, and soul elements – woven into patterns that are always very much her own – a musical legacy that the great Sun Ra might have appreciated! Ndegeocello leads a very diverse lineup here – playing bass and keyboards, and singing a bit – next to other players who include longtime Arkestra giant Marshall Allen on alto and EWI, plus Immanuel Wilkins on alto, Christopher Bruce on guitar, Darius Jones on saxes, Daniel Mintseris on keyboards, and Justin Hicks, Pink Siifu, Kenita Miller, Nio Levon, and Hanna Benn on vocals. The album channels Ra's spirit through territory that's very much Meshell's own – and titles include "Yet Differently Not Mars Hall", "El Soul The Companion Traveler", "The World Of Shadow", "Reproductive Manatees/Sunny Said Up", "Bedlam Blues", "#9 Venus The Living Myth", and "Departure Guide Of The 7 Sisters". ✨✧ Matana RobertsCoin Coin Chapter Five – In The Garden ... CD
Constellation (Canada), 2023. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the most striking set in this ever-shifting series of releases from Matana Roberts – and one that shows his more advanced sonic sensibilities, in a mix of improvised jazz and more compositional settings! There's a vibe here that's almost like the more "serious" work of Roscoe Mitchell – at least in the way that reeds and strings interweave – yet Roberts, as always, brings a deeply personal approach to the music, with lots of shorter songs that weave more soulful elements amidst the avant expressions – which are served up by a lineup that includes Mike Pride on drums, Cory Smythe on piano, Darius Jones on alto, Mazz Swift on violin, and Mat Lavelle on alto clarinet and pocket trumpet. Kyp Malone brings in a bit of electronics, and there are vocalizations at points – on titles that include "A Caged Dance", "No Way Chastened", "Away Is Not An Option", "Shake My Bones", "Enthralled Not By Her Curious Blend", "Different Rings", "Predestined Confessions", and "We Said".
