Bob WilberFor Saxes Only! ... LP
Music Minus One, Mid 60s. Very Good+ ... $6.99
One of the hippest MMO sets ever recorded – one featuring a sax section that includes Hilton Jefferson, Seldon Powell, Bob Wilber, Jerome Richardson, and Danny Bank. The group's backed by a rhythm section, and all tracks have room for one alto or tenor sax to jump in – which gives the record a really weird feel! Titles include "Freemanition", "Ballad For Beth", "Countdown!", "Pork N Beans", "Waltzing On A Reed", and "Living For Love". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousYou Heard Them Here First – Rock's Icons Before They Were Famous ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $10.99 18.99
A really cool little collection – one that features early work by a host of famous rockers and 60s pop acts – many of whom are recording here before using their better-known later names! The music's pulled from both sides of the Atlantic, and often has a nicely rough-edged feel – bits of garage rock, mod soul,a nd more – performed by artists who include Peter Frampton, Mike Nesmith, The Byrds, Cher, David Bowie, Lou Reed, Ry Cooder, Neil Young, Lee Hazlewood, Narry Nilsson, Love, and others! As always with Ace, the notes are great – and really help illuminate these rare gems – and titles include "It's My Time" by The Mynah Birds, "Your Love" by Lewis Reed, "Stop Calling Me Baby" by Danny Lee, "Dream Baby" by Cherilyn, "In The Midnight Hour" by The Pigeons, "I Can Fly" by The Herd, "You Made Me Fall" by Marty Balin, "Prison Break" by The Paramours, "Rumble-Still-Skins" by Arthur Lee & The LAGs, "Groovy Little Suzie" by Bo-Pete, "Can't Let Her See Me Cry" by Mark Robinson, "Hole In My Pocket" by The Rockets, "Candy Man" by The Rising Sons, and "Liza Jane" by Davie Jones with The King Bees. ✨✧ Frank Foster/George WallingtonHere Comes Frank Foster/George Wallington Showcase ... CD
Blue Note, 1954. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
2 rare 10" jazz albums from the early days of Blue Note – issued here on one great CD that has all the original cover art, great sound, and even a few bonus cuts! Tenorist Frank Foster is at the core of both of these sessions – as he leads the group on his own album, and he's the dominant reed soloist on the George Wallington session. Although Foster's often lumped into the cliche camp for his long years with Basie, he shines like a rough diamond on sessions like these, proving that he's got a tone and a style that he keeps tightly reserved for small group sessions like these. On the Here Comes Frank Foster album, he plays with the great Gildo Mahones on piano – on tracks like "Little Red", "Blues For Benny", and "How I Spent The Night". The second album of the CD is led by bop piano legend George Wallington, and has a slightly larger group that also includes Dave Burns on trumpet, Jimmy Cleveland on trombone, and Danny Bank on baritone. Titles on that one include "Baby Grand", "Festival", "Bumpins", and a nice take on "Summertime". 16 cuts in all, and a very sharp-looking package of some of the best rare jazz of the 50s! CD

✨✧ Frank StrozierRemember Me ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1976. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A gem of a record – the kind of overlooked 70s session we really treasure! Reed player Frank Strozier was one of the all-time under-discovered greats – and this set reunites him with his old Memphis partner/MJT+3 bandmate, Harold Mabern – a perfect pairing for Strozier's warm and fluid style on alto sax and flute! The pair always worked perfectly together, and on this session of laidback modern soul jazz material, they hit a very nice groove, and play off the best of each other's warm lyrical tendencies. Other players include Danny Moore, Lisle Atkinson, and Michael Carvin – and the set's filled with great original tutnes that include "Kram Samba", "Neicy", "Sidestreet", "Hit It", and "For Our Elders". Ron Carter & Danny SimmonsBrown Beatnik Tomes – Live At BRIC House ... CD
Blue Note, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
Ron Carter has always been way more than a straight jazz bassist – especially in the past few decades, where his collaborative spirit has taken him into territory we never would have imagined early on in his career! Here, he works alongside writer Danny Simmons – whose words inform most of these tracks, read by Simmons himself. Carter plays these amazing basslines that are vivid and illustrative while Danny reeds – and a few tracks change up the approach slightly, one with a reading from Liza Jessie Peterson, two more with trio performances that feature Donald Vega on piano and Russel Malone on guitar. Titles include "Tender", "The Final Stand Of Two Dick Willie", "For A Pistol", "The Jigaboo Waltz", "The Brown Beatnik Tones", and "Feeling It Coming On". CD

✨✧ Sun RaContinuation (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Saturn/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1963. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
Mindblowing music from Sun Ra & The Arkestra – sounds recorded during the same marathon session that gave the world the records Other Planes Of There, When Sun Comes Out, and When Angels Speak Of Love – but titles that are much more obscure overall! The initial release of the material featured very misleading notes, but the true details of the session are even more impressive – as Ra plays a variety of unusual instruments alongside piano – including the piano strings, space organ, and clavioline – alongside some sublime straight horn work from John Gilmore on tenor, Marshall Allen on alto and oboe, Pat Patrick on baritone, Danny Davis on alto and clarinet, Walter Miller on trumpet, Robert Cummings on bass clarinet, and Ali Hasaan on trombone! The lineup here has that raw power the Arkestra first unleashed after their initial move to New York – almost a sense of new freedom in the new environment – even at a time when they weren't clicking on a financial level, but still continued to push forward with new ideas in music! Some passages have this great approach that links the cosmic ideas of the Arkestra with older traditions of jazz soloing – while others reflect the growing concern of the group with new textures and sounds – making for some very impressive elements on both the horns and percussion. The group is completed by Ronnie Boykins on bass, Art Jenkins on space voice and percussion, and Tommy Hunter on drums, percussion, and some mighty nice reverb – and titles include "Biosphere Blues", "Intergalactic Research", "Earth Primitive Earth", "New Planet", and "Continuation To Jupiter Festival". Beautiful 2CD reissue features sublime sounds from the original tapes, remastered – plus a full bonus CD of unreleased tracks that include "Blue York", "Conversation Of The Universe", "Red Planet Mars", "Cosmic Rays/Next Stop Mars", "The Myth", "Meteor Shower", "Infinity", "The Beginning Of", and "Endlessness". ✨✧ Charles MingusTrio (aka Mingus Three) ... LP
Jubilee, 1957. Good ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A classic trio session from Charles Mingus – one of the few he ever recorded! The set's got Mingus on bass, working with regular drummer Danny Richmond and pianist Hampton Hawes – an unusual choice for the record, but a player whose sense of freedom and intensity at this point really helps bring in some of the energy of some of the larger group recordings from Mingus! Hawes' incredible piano lines really fly over the top, and Mingus' bass comes to the forefront as well – getting plenty of room for personal elements that Charles never got as strongly in the larger sessions. The set list includes a mix of originals and standards, with "Back Home Blues", "Hamp's New Blues", "Dizzy Moods", and "Laura". LP, Vinyl record album

Pharoah SandersPharoah Sanders Live In Paris 1975 – Lost ORTF Recordings ... LP
Transversales Disques (France), 1975. New Copy Gatefold ... $34.99
A gem of a record from the legendary Pharoah Sanders – a set that's recorded right at the tail end of his famous years for Impulse Records, and which has all the best qualities of his last few records for that label! The vibe here is a lot like Elevation or Love Is In Us All – a return to warmer, more spiritual modes, with less of the completely outside qualities of Sanders' early 70s material – a great flow, lots of modal energy in the rhythms, and that mix of soul and freedom that reminds us again that Pharoah is one of the founders of the spiritual jazz style! The group features Danny Mixon on piano and organ, Calvin Hill on bass, and Greg Bandy on drums – and the music was all recorded by ORTF Radio, with fantastic fidelity – and this reissue is completely legit, and remastered from the original tapes. Titles include "Love Is Here", "Farrell Tune", "Love is Everywhere", "The Creator Has A Master Plan", and "I Want To Talk About You". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Nimbus CollectiveLive In Lotus Land ... CD
Nimbus, 1987. New Copy 2CDs ... Out Of Stock
A lost session of spiritual jazz – recorded in LA in the latter half of the 80s, but with a soaring, righteous vibe that's right up there with the 70s scene! The group here is incredible – an all-star array of the best talents working for Nimbus Records – Nate Morgan on piano, Rickey Kelly on vibes, Jesse Sharps on reeds, Danny Cortez on trumpet, Joel Ector on bass, and Derek Roberts on drums – all moving with the cohesiveness of a well-honed small combo, in territory that's right in line with some of Morgan's most glorious recordings for the label! The use of Kelly on vibes is especially nice – as he's a player we've always loved, but hardly ever get to hear in a setting this ambitious – and his presence on the record makes the whole thing sound even more magical and majestic. Tracks are quite long, with a soaring, searching feel – driven on strongly by Morgan's piano, and topped by some great explorations by Sharps. Titles include "Retribution Reparation", "Big Spliff", "A Bientot", "The Goat & The Ram Jam", "Mfaconi", "Mrafu", "Distant Vibes", and "Journey Into Nigritia". CD
