Claude Bolling Jazz All StarsNuances (aka French Jazz) ... LP
DRG, 1956. Near Mint- ... $5.99
An early batch of tracks from French arranger Claude Bolling – probably best known for his later "jazz meets classical" work, but heard here in a great straight set from the 50s! The album features Bolling at the head of a largeish group that features Parisian players Roger Guerin, Pierre Gossez, Martial Solal, and Pierre Michelot – all working with Bolling in a set of tightly-arranged tracks that have a similarity to the west coast mode of the time. The main difference, though, is Claude's earthier touch on piano – one that, even amidst the clean-edged arrangements, stretches back to earlier eras of expression – and brings forward a few decades of tradition in his touch on the keys! Tracks include "French Beat", "Nuances", "Gee Lee", and "The Jockey". LP, Vinyl record album
(80s issue.)

Vladimir CosmaDiva ... CD
DRG/Ryko, 1982. Used ... $2.99
When we were impressionable little arty tykes, this was one of our favorite soundtracks. It's got some beautiful Satie-esque tracks that feature solo piano by Vladimir Cosma, plus some weird Euro electronic stuff that has a nice cold feel to it. Also features a few tracks from the opera "La Wally", but we always skipped over these. Titles include "Voie Sans Issue", "Gorodish", "Promenade Sentimentale", "Metro Police", and "Lame De Fond". CD

Gal CostaGal Costa Live At The Blue Note ... CD
DRG, 2006. Used ... $11.99
A slightly traditional set from Brazilian vocalist Gal Costa – but a great one too, and record that demonstrates a new sense of poise and grace in her vocals in recent years! The material here is mostly bossa – work that pre-dates Gal's initial time on record, but which is delivered here with a sensitivity that's wonderful – never too "easy", despite the familiarity of the tunes, and handled with just that right sense of contemplation and expression with which Jobim and others first penned the tunes. Backing is small combo jazz by a quartet with flute, guitar, bass, and drums – and although live, the sound is nicely close up and intimate – really fitting the mood of the songs. Titles include "Fotografia", "Nada Alem", "Corcovado", "Garota De Ipanema", "Wave", "Samba Do Aviao", "A Felicidade", "Triste", and "Ave Maria No Morro". CD

Lena HorneLena Goes Latin (aka Lena Like Latin) ... LP
CRC/DRG, 1961. Sealed ... $2.99
A set that features lots of great arrangements from Shorty Rogers – upbeat and jazzy, in ways that aren't exactly the Latin modes promised by the title, but still pretty darn great! Rogers his hitting nicely here on all burners – that leaner 60s approach he used in some of his own great records of the time, with rhythms that borrow a bit from bossa and Latin jazz, but turn their elements towards a west coast sort of groove in the end. Lennie Hayton conducts the orchestra, but he's definitely moving in a Rogers-directed mode – much more so than on earlier dates with Lena for RCA. Titles include "Meditation", "More", "Old Devil Moon", "My Blue Heaven", "Cuckoo In The Clock", "From This Moment On", and "Take Me". LP, Vinyl record album
(80s issue, still sealed, with a Priceless Collection sticker and small hole.)

Buddy RichLive At Ronnie Scott's London ... CD
DRG, 1980. Used ... $9.99
Late work by jazz drum giant Buddy Rich – captured in a surprisingly energetic, firey, and sometimes funky mode at Ronnie Scott's Club in 1980! Buddy really pulled off some bright, buoyant, funk influenced work in the 70s and this set finds him at the tail end of that groove – playing with a pretty big group that includes Ernie Vantrease on piano, Wayne Pedziwiatr on bass, Ando Fusco, Jack Leibowitz, Steave Marcus and Kenny Hitchcock on saxes, Bob Coassin on lead trumpet, Roger Homefield on lead trombone, and others. Titles include "Intro/Beulah Witch", "Grand Concourse", "Blues A La 88", "Saturday Night", "Slow Funk" and the epic, 15+ minute closer "Good News". CD
