Maria BethaniaMy Backyard (aka Meus Quintais) ... CD
Biscoito Fino/DRG, 2014. Used ... $11.99
One of the most personal albums we've heard in years from Maria Bethania – a set that's got a quietly intimate vibe, one that really lives up to the spirit of the title – a place where Bethania can be herself and share some of her innermost thoughts! The backing is wonderfully intimate – usually just a bit of samba-styled percussion or guitar, but taken at a very slow pace – and Maria's vocals, while still having the majesty of other records, also come across with a more up-close spirit overall – one we find surprisingly moving, even after all these many years of loving her music. Titles include "Moda Da Onca", "Arco Da Velha India", "Candeiro Velho", "Alguma Voz", "Xavante", "Mae Maria", and "Povos Do Brazil". CD

Chico BuarqueChico ... CD
DRG, 2011. Used ... $8.99
Damn – a heck of a treat! Chico Buarque's one of those artists we never take for granted – and although we've been loving his music for decades, we've also been surprised for that long at how consistently great it is – especially during his maturing years, when he really seems to have hit a whole new level of genius! A set like this is a perfect illustration of that fact – simple numbers with a mostly acoustic instrumental approach – yet put together with a subtle sort of complexity that really sets them apart! The tunes are timeless at some level, yet completely fresh at another – similar to some of Caetano Veloso's best work in later small combo modes – and as always, Chico's vocals alone are completely sublime – full of more than enough feeling and humanity to cross the boundaries of language. Luiz Claudio Ramos handled the great arrangements for the album – and titles include "Rubato", "Tipo Um Baiao", "Sinha", "Nina", "Sou Eu", "Sem Voce 2", and "Querido Diario". CD
(Out of print.)

Gal CostaGal Costa Live At The Blue Note ... CD
DRG, 2006. Used ... $6.99
A slightly traditional set from Brazilian vocalist Gal Costa – but a great one too, and record that demonstrates a new sense of poise and grace in her vocals in recent years! The material here is mostly bossa – work that pre-dates Gal's initial time on record, but which is delivered here with a sensitivity that's wonderful – never too "easy", despite the familiarity of the tunes, and handled with just that right sense of contemplation and expression with which Jobim and others first penned the tunes. Backing is small combo jazz by a quartet with flute, guitar, bass, and drums – and although live, the sound is nicely close up and intimate – really fitting the mood of the songs. Titles include "Fotografia", "Nada Alem", "Corcovado", "Garota De Ipanema", "Wave", "Samba Do Aviao", "A Felicidade", "Triste", and "Ave Maria No Morro". CD

George & Ira Gershwin/Fred Astaire/Audrey HepburnFunny Face ... LP
Verve, 1959. Near Mint- ... $9.99
One of the strangest moments of success in the early years of Verve Records – and one of the label's few soundtracks too! The album's one that cleverly combines the core Verve jazz approach with some larger orchestrations by Adolph Deutsche – in a set of tunes based around the compositions of George and Ira Gershwin, used in a new catalog musical that starred Fred Astaire, Audrey Hepburn, and Kay Thompson! The link to the music of the Gershwins is right up there with the important Songbook projects Verve was doing at the time – and of course, Fred Astaire recorded some great material for the label in the 50s too – reminding the world that he could be a pretty great singer when he wanted, even away from film. Fred's maybe the biggest attraction here, as are some of the new tunes added in by Roger Edens and Leonard Gershe – and titles include "Funny Face", "How Long Has This Been Going On", "Clap Yo Hands", "S'Wonderful", "Think Pink", "Bonjour Paris", "Let's Kiss & Make Up", and "He Loves & She Loves". LP, Vinyl record album
(Late 70s pressing on Stet/DRG in a non-gatefold cover.)

Judy HollidayTrouble Is A Man ... LP
Columbia, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $4.99
An obscure bit of boozy sad songs – proof that Holliday had a lot more to offer than just an extremely strong showing on Broadway. She's working here with arrangements by Glen Osser that sort of take off from the spirit of "The Party's Over" – sad and dreamy, but also with a bit of hope. Titles include "Lonely Town", "How About Me", "Trouble is A Man", "Am I Blue", "Confession", and "An Occasional Man". LP, Vinyl record album
(DRG pressing. Cover has light wear and partially taped seams, corner bend.)
