DJ ShadowLess You Know, The Better ... CD
Verve, 2011. Used ... $5.99
Does any hip hop DJ/producer/artist or otherwise instrumental sound stylist of any stripe face steeper critical expectations with each successive album than DJ Shadow, and if so, do any of them divert those expectations so profoundly as Shadow does? On The Less You Know, The Better, Josh Davis flirts with the beats, scratches and mood altering soundscapes of his early work at a few points, but he really tackles wide sylistic breadth here – including fuzzed out rock guitars over frenetic beats, spacey folk funk, darkness tinged new wave, timelessly brilliant rap. Includes "Back To Front (Circular Logic)", "Border Crossing", "Stay The Course" feat Talib Kweli & Posdnuos, "I've Been Trying", "Tedium", "Going Nowhere", "I Gotta Rokk", "Run For Your Life", "Scale It Back" feat Little Dragon, "Redeemed", "Circular Logic (Front To Back)" and more. DJ ShadowMashin' On The Motorways/Walkie Talkie (CD single & videos) ... CD
Mo Wax (UK), 2003. Used CD&DVD ... $2.99
Some of the finer Private Press-era Shadow cuts get stretched out, beat up, and kicked into overdrive by UNKLE, Soulwax, DJ Z Trip and others! Z Trip's take on "Right Thing" revisits Shadow's style directly – breaking the track up into three uptempo parts, making it into a bit of an epic. Soulwax takes the mellow, trippy cut "Six Days" and reshapes into kind of a post punk/moddish rocker – 180 degrees from the album version, and a really nice take! "GDMFSOB" resurrects the UNKLE guise with a guest spot by Roots Manuva. Surprisingly, the title cuts are buried a bit on the single – radio edits of "Walkie Talkie" and "Mashin' On the Motorway" – but the package includes a bonus DVD featuring the videos for those two cuts. ✨✧ DJ ShadowOur Pathetic Age ... LP
Mass Appeal, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A sprawling double album from DJ Shadow – still defying expectations and avoiding nostalgia decades into his career – covering a lot territory production wise, with a diverse roster of guests to suit! As much as his early work is heralded for its timelessness, Shadow in later years has been been unafraid to make albums that are of their moment, and Our Pathetic Age is definitely one of them. A mix of diverse instrumentals with shades of Shadow's styles from throughout his long career, even if he doesn't do anything here that directly retraces his steps, plus vocal tracks with guests as varied as Run The Jewels, Fantastic Negrito, Nas & Pharoahe Monch, a Wu trio of Raekwon, Ghostface and Deck, De La Soul and more. Titles include "Nature Always Wins", "Firestorm", "If I Died Today", "COMFORM", "Kings & Queens", "Urgent. Important. Please Read", "Our Pathetic Age" and many more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ DJ ShadowOutsider (limited edition) ... CD
Universal, 2006. Used CD & DVD ... Out Of Stock
A fascinating full length departure from DJ Shadow – an album that's more or less made up of genre suites – rolling from sound library groove, to hood-shaking hyphy hip hop, to topical post-Katrina commentary, to beat-driven live instrument avant funk! The album's flow is more or less held together with the occasional backing of the Heliocentrics – featuring drummer Malcolm Catto – as a tight rhythmic backdrop in a number of spots with heavy drums plus keys, vibes, bass and guitar. But even more tracks are buoyant bombs of deeply pulsing, heavily thumping contemporary hip hop. The album is ultimately kind of a mess, but it's a very ballsy one – featuring some of Shadow's most mainstream hip hop productions ever – which is actually in itself a pretty radical move when you think about it! Titles include "This Time (I'm Gonna Try It My Way)", "3 Freaks" feat Keak Da Sneak & Turf Talk, "Turf Dancing" feat The Federation & Animaniaks, "Keep Em Close" feat Nump, "Seein' Thangs" feat David Banner, "Broken Levee Blues", "Artifact (inst)", "Backstage Girl" feat Phonte Coleman, "Triplicate/Something Happened That Day", "The Tiger" feat Sergio Pizzorno & Christopher Karloff, "Erase You" feat Chris James, "What Have I Done" feat Christina Carter, "Enuff" feat Q-Tip & Lateef The Truth Speaker, "Dats My Part" feat E-40, "3 Freaks (Droop-E rmx)" feat Mistah FAB, Turf Talk & Keak Da Sneak and more. Limited edition includes the DVD Tour Visuals. CD

Express RisingExpress Rising (2nd album) ... CD
Numero, 2013. New Copy ... $7.99 13.00
A warm batch of instrumental beats and atmospherics from Express Rising – and a much-anticipated second project from funk archivist Dante Carfagna! Dante's a name you probably know best from his work writing liner notes or Wax Poetics – and helping out in countless important compilations over the years – but a decade ago, Dante dropped his first mysterious project under the Express Rising name – and finally returns here with a second album! The sound is even more enticing this time around – still drawing a bit from the world of DJ Shadow – a frequent Carfagna collaborator on archive projects – but the sound is also surprisingly warm and lyrical too – bits of beats, layers of older sounds, and these spare keyboard bits all served up together in a style that's really unique – and which avoids any of the cliches of both the downtempo world, and the instrumental hip hop scene The approach is often quite poetic, yet still soulful as well – and the whole thing's got a laidback vibe that's neither sleepy nor muddled – a really sort of special space between the grooves. Titles include "Horse Opera", "Dark Early", "Answering Echo So Near", "Winter The Heart", "A Treasure Smile", "Rooms Between Us", and "Memorabilia". CD

Now Again, Early 70s. New Copy ... $7.99 17.98
A stunning batch of tracks from a very unusual LA group of the early 70s – a funk combo at the core, but one that was also equally comfortable with bits of psych and redneck rock as well! The music here was all recorded within a short span of years, and mostly issued on the small Alpha label as a handful of funky 45s – but the style is surprisingly spacious, and shows a strong sense of musicianship from the members of the group – so much so that they seem equally comfortable and right on top of their game, no matter what direction they choose to take! And don't think that this multi-style description means that these guys are too all over the map, because there's a really unified sense of soul that holds the whole thing together – so that when they get a bit rootsy, the result is country soul – or when they get a bit trippy, they hit some Funkadelic-styled sounds. The collection includes great notes on the setting that produced these tracks – penned by Egon, who put the set together with help from Malcolm Catto, DJ Shadow, and others. Titles include "Don't Let Him Take Away Your Mind", "Strange Things", "Heaven & Earth", "Take Time", "We Got Love", "Waterloo At Watergate", "Why Don't You Trust In Me", "Cruising Central Ave", "The Dead Don't Die Alive", and "You're My Precious Someone". Idris MuhammadPower Of Soul ... CD
Kudu/CTI, 1974. New Copy ... $4.99 6.99
An incredible record from funky drummer Idris Muhammad! Idris is probably known for his funky break work on Blue Note and Prestige records sessions of the late 60s and early 70s – but by the time of this 1974 album, he was really expanding his style, hitting a laidback groove that went way beyond the simple drum break, into a world of complicated fills and riffs that forever changed the face of funk. The best example of this is the album's standout groove – the massive cut "Loran's Dance", which has a mellow jazzy vibe that you'll recognize from its popular use as a sample cut over the years (by the Beastie Boys, DJ Shadow, and others.) All cuts are long and mellow, and other titles include "Power Of Soul", "Saddest Thing" and "Piece of Mind". CD

Mo Wax (UK), 1994. Used 2CDs ... $19.99
A nice piece of history! It's easy in these post-Headz days to forget the sort of records Mo Wax was putting out in the early days, and though there's some seminal trip hop included here, like Shadow's "Influx" and RPM's "Food Of My De-Rhythm", there's some straight up acid jazz too, and not bad at that, like the early DJ Krush single "Slow Chase", with live sax & organ, and his collaboration with Monday Michiru "Hear Between The Silence", Marden Hill's "Come On", the Gil Scott-Heron-ish "If" by Step and the Federation's "Life So Free". But the real kicker fo rus was the inclusion of one of our favorite early singles, Palm Skin Productions beautiful reading of Miles' classic "In A Silent Way", with Chris Bowden blowing beautifully on soprano. ✨✧ Kyoto Jazz Massive & Others10th Anniversary ... CD
Compost (Germany), 2006. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A loving tribute to the genius of Kyoto Jazz Massive – one that serves up tracks recorded by, remixed by, and in tribute to the group – all pulled together from a range of previously-released expensive Japanese CDs! The title of this one's a bit misleading – given that Kyoto Jazz Massive actually celebrated its 10th anniversary back in 2004, with 3 different CDs titled Re KJM, For KJM, and By KJM – all of which featured wonderful music by the group and some of their most important contemporaries from the European and Japanese scenes. This set's a distillation of those 3 CDs into a double-disc package – and features some of the best numbers from before – all sunny groovers recorded with inspiration from older jazz, Latin, and Brazilian sources – all filtered through into a beautifully cosmic 21st Century groove! 19 tracks in all – including "Brightness Of These Days (Quantic rmx)" by Kyoto Jazz Massive, "Where Love Shines (KJM rmx)" by Incognito, "Endless Flight" by Kyoto Jazz Massive, "Time To Fly" by Restless Soul, "Mind Expansions (Blaze Shelter sundae mix)" by Kyoto Jazz Massive, "Come With Me" by Dego & Kaidi Tatham, "Tomorrow Never Comes" by Reel People with Vanessa Freeman, "Ronco Da Cuica" by Da Lata, "Shine" by Jazztronik, "A Calamaria (sailing into the unknown version)" by Monday Michiru, "Behind The Shadow" by Toshio Matsuura Group, "Nacel Do Sol" by Aurura, "Spireedom 2004" by DJ Mitsu The Beats, and "Aphrodite" by Louie Vega & EOL Band. This is the kind of funk they've been hiding from you all these years – the real deal, the heavy stuff, the type of work that's made driving around the country looking for rare 45s so worthwhile! This material's the kind that makes a trip like that happen – super-rare funk from Texas, dug up by the Jazzman posse, and given the stamp of approval by DJ Shadow! The package is a perfect introduction to the lost heritage of Texas funky work – as it not only includes 21 searing tracks of funk (some of the best we've heard compiled in a long time!), but it also features a breakdown of the different scenes in the state, and a full set of notes on each tune, complete with an image of the original 45! VariousEccentric Soul – The Nickel & Penny Labels ... CD
Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A long-overdue collection – and a rich document of one of our favorite sides of the Chicago soul scene! The package is devoted to the tiny Nickel and Penny labels, but it's also equally a set dedicated to legendary radio DJ Richard Pegue – whose work in both mainstream soul and later dusties formats really helped to shape our understanding of soul music! Pegue produced and wrote nearly every track on the set – which makes the collection one of the most unified the Numero Group has ever produced – a true tribute to Richard's great ear for a groovy soul record, and to all the smaller-name groups he helped support on the Windy City scene. The booklet does a great job of telling Pegue's story – really getting at the unique vision he brought to Chicago soul, and the wit and warmth that made him a favorite of many folks over the space of decades. The music alone is enough – stuff we've been waiting to get reissued for years – but together with the Numero research and booklet, the end result is sublime! Titles include "Just Say The Word" by Jerry Townes, "Fall In Love Again" by The Voices, "Never More" by Little Ben & The Cheers, "Why Do You Want To Make Me Sad" by The Norvells, "Instrumental 1" by Richard Terry & Company, "Shadows" by South Shore Commission, "This Is The Woman" by Sidney Pinchback, "The Ember Song" by Sidney Barnes, "Sign Of The Zodiac" by South Suburban Electric Strings, "This Love Of Mine" by Extensions, "Forever Is A Long Long Time" by The Voices, "Do The Pearl Girl (part 2)" by The Matta Baby, "I've Got To Find A Way" by Hallelujah Chorus, "First Thing I Do In The Morning" by Joyce Williams, and "I'm Gonna Get Even With You" by Little Ben & The Cheers. One of the coolest collections we've heard from Keb Darge in years – not the funk and soul he first gave us when he started putting compilations together, nor the rockabilly and R&B from more recent years – and instead a fantastic array of rare late 60s garage rock and freaky fuzz singles! The set's tone in collaboration with Cut Chemist – another DJ we'd never expect to know this music so well – and together, the pair turn their talent for rare record digging to an arena that never seems to get old – the under-underground of the pre-hippy years, with a stunning selection of tracks by artists who worked in the deep shadows beneath bigger acts like Count Five, The Seeds, or Standells. Half the record is collected by Cut Chemist, the other by Keb – and the package features a whopping 30 tracks in all, most of which we'd never heard before! Dancer and pop soul sensation Jermaine Stewart's bright, thumping and 80s dancefoor R&B that busted out huge on the pop charts for a moment! Jermaine was a dancer on Soul Train and background singer before busting out with some catchy R&B hits and the massive pop smash "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off". It's a fun record, and it's interesting to listen to the very 80s sound all these later, after its time in the dark outdated pop shadows, before it became a celebrated influence of the hippest post millennium DJs. Cultural chin-scratching aside, it's a straight up catchy, appealing album from a very talented Jermaine Stewart.
