✨✧ Homeboy SandmanKool Herc – Fertile Crescent EP ... LP
Stones Throw, 2013. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Homeboy Sandman delivers a nicely gritty EP for Stones Throw – paying tribute not only to the legendary DJ Kool Herc in the title – and ultimately honoring blueprint, funky break beats era hip hop in general! Homeboy specifically names it after Kool Herc, but it's not a covers EP or collaboration – it's more to pay tribute to the era Herc personifies, albeit in a fresh contemporary way. Sandman's rhymes are as freewheeling and creative as ever, but he's showing a bit of verbal restraint here, and he's more about solidly matching the ompellingly gritty production by Rthentic – as opposed to taking the word count to a surreal level. Great stuff – and pretty generously packed for an EP. 8 tracks in all: "My Brothers", "Oh, The Horror", "Lonely People", "Dag, Philly Too", "Moon", "Men Are Mortal", "Peace & Love" and "I". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the download card. Cover is bumped and worn at the corners of the spine, with a light blemish in back.)

✨✧ UnklePsyence Fiction ... LP
Mo Wax, 1998. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the principal albums in trip hop's ascension into the mainstream, and the bright, extroverted flipside to Portishead's darker vision of the late 90s scene. Mo Wax honcho James Lavelle's longstanding Unkle project got a massive makeover when DJ Shadow became the prime sonic architect for the Psyence Fiction LP. Shadow throws everything but the kitchen sink into the thing, working with a wide range of vocalists and collaborators from hip hop innovators (Kool G Rap, Mike D) to whiny alternative rockers (Richard Ashcroft, Thom Yorke). With a project as busy as Unkle, the law of subjectivity pretty much dictates that you're gonna love parts, and hate parts – but Shadow was so on top of his game at the time, he somehow manages to hold it all together. It may not be his best ever work, but Psyence Fiction certainly holds up, and it's an essential piece of the puzzle! Tracks include "Main Title Theme", "Guns Blazing", "Blood Stain", "Unreal", "Chaos", "Rabbit In Your Headlights", Lonely Soul", and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing with white labels and Masterdisk stamp. Includes the printed inner sleeves. A nice copy!)

✨✧ VariousP&P Presents Happy Music & Friends – A Selection Of Classic & Cult Disco, Funk, & Soul ... CD
P&P/Octave (Japan), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
An amazing collection of grooves – all pulled from the legendary P&P Records family of labels from the New York underground – hand-selected by Japanese DJ/collectors Ken Hidaka and Frankie Valentine! If you don't know the P&P groove, this is a great place to start – as the label had a really unique, really wonderful sound – tracks from the disco era, but stripped down to their core – so that the rhythms are really raw, instrumentation is nice and funky, and most of the music has this searing power that's kept the P&P tracks on the hippest of dancefloors for decades! A number of the cuts have really cool electronics, some others bring in some old school modes, and there's an equal balance between vocals and instrumentals that really keeps things exciting. Titles include "I Got You Dancing" by Karisma with Jocelyn Brown, "Ain't It Time (inst)" by Queen Yahna, "Magic Carpet" by High Fidelity, "Pound For Pound" by Le'o Roy, "Spank Me (voc)" by Bobby Mann, "Smooth Talk (inst)" by Mr Fox, "Johnson Jumpin (12" mix)" by Johnson Products, "Got To Get Your Love (voc)" by Clyde Alexander & Sanction, "Death Rap" by Margo's Kool Out Crew, "Dance Freak" by Chain Reaction, "African Rock" by Licky, "Stomp Your Feet & Dance (voc)" by Kim Taylor, "Roller Rink Funk" by Shift, "New York's Movin" by Ahzz, "Shake Off That Dream (disco)" by Eddie Owen, and "Freaktime" by Scott Davis & The Movements. ✨✧ VariousEthiopiques Volume 13 – Ethiopian Groove: The Golden Seventies ... CD
Buda (France), Mid 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of our favorite compilations in this amazing series – a killer batch of 70s funk from Ethiopia! The instrumental grooves are very much in the style of the best American work at the time – like tracks by James Brown or Kool & The Gang – but the vocals have this amazing other-worldly feel that makes the music sound totally unique, and which pulls out some strange pitches in the instrumentation that really gives the whole thing a wild and edgey feel! The set's got 17 tracks in all – none of which you've probably heard before – and titles include "Tashamanaletch" and "Wededku Afqerkush" by Alemayehu Eshete, "Muziqawi Silt" by Wallias Band, "Gedawo" and "Gud Aderegetchegn" by Ayalew Mesafin, "Ya Djaleleto" and "Antchin Yagegnulet" by Tamrat Ferendji, and "Yemendjar Shega" by Muluqen Mellesse.
