✨✧ VariousDJ Format's Psych Out – A Collection Of International Funky Fuzz-Laden Gems ... LP
BBE (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99 28.98
Cool cuts from around the globe – all brought together in one wonderfully funky set! The music here all draws heavily from American funk and psych styles – and often uses some slightly different instrumentation, or more regional inflection – to make the usual psych funk styles sound even more groovy and exotic – in a mindblowing way that makes the entire set a real musical delight! Most tracks are instrumental – heavy on drums and fuzzy guitar – but there's a few vocal moments, too – and the funk current is super-strong, way more so than on other collections that promise a heavy bottom, but usually just present offbeat psych. Titles include "Jet Pop" by Bana Pop Band, "Foxy Lady" by 49th Blue Streak, "Karate Chop" by The Tijuana Brats, "Stari Dvorac" by Pro Arte, "Nie Przejziemy Do Historii" by Krzysztof Klenczon, "Louis Louis" by Friar Tuck, "Time Of Machines" by Sergio Ferraresi, and "The Shaman's Dance" by Alexandr Sergeyevich. A real classic from Chip E – maybe not always the strongest of the early Chicago house music pioneers, but a great talent here – with a wonderfully soulful vibe! Female lead vocals make the tune a fuller, richer one than it might be from just the stark handclap beats and basslines – and Lidell Townsell handles the house remix, which is superb – and really shows his strong ear for a vamping trancing groove! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Truthfully we have never really been able to get with hip house, in spite of both our love of rap and house musics. But if it's your thing, it doesn't get much better than this. 8 tracks on Dj International, mostly self produced: "Let The Music Take Control", "Hip House Is A Style", "Tonight", "The Nation Of Hip House", "Move Your Body", "This Is How It Should Be Done", "On The Smooth Tip" and "Night Time". An undisputed Chi House classic! The hard drums and bubbly electronics of this one make it a killer, and leave it sounding even fresher today than when it first came out. Lead vocals by Keith Nunnally are extremely soulful – with a great sound that gives the cut a lot more bottom than some of the other, flatter Chicago cuts from the time. Served up on 4 long mixes, too! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(White label pressing with blue text.)

DJ International, 1986. Near Mint- (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
A tasty little house track from JM Silk – one of the most tuneful of the Chicago house groups of the mid 80s scene! Steve Silk Hurley's production is filled with lots of nice keyboard washes on the set – and the track's got that nice slow-burning vocal approach that the group used so well. And if that's not enough, the cover image features some very nice threads from The Lark Clothing Store – in our old stomping grounds, Evergreen Plaza! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(Cover has a cut corner.)

VariousDetroit Love Vol 2 ... CD
Planet E, 2019. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99
A heavy helping of Detroit Love – and one that will also make you love Detroit too – or, at least, completely respect the city for having such a continually rewarding underground over the last few decades – long after the possibility of chart hits or bigger fame have passed! Detroit's electronic scene first got notice at the end of the 80s – when its own grooves were rising to rival the house music coming from Chicago – and while that moment sparked some big international fame, the decades have continued to see the city working to improve, refine, and mature their initial impulses – with the sorts of fantastic sounds that you'll hear in this set! Not all the music is new, but most of it is – and the set combines some wonderfully fresh tracks from the Carl Craig side of the universe – both his own music, and work by key contemporaries too – with titles that include "It Is What It Is" by Rhythim Is Rhythim, "Rosalie" by Green Velvet & Carl Craig, "Do It All Night (C2 edit)" by DJ Minx, "Credit Card (Gay Marvine rmx)" by BMG & Sal P, "Satori" by Ectomorph, "Formulaic Mode" by Mirko Loko & Stacey Pullen, "My Love Check" by Claude Vonstroke, and "Alleys Of Your Mind" by The Dirtbombs. CD version has a lot more than the 2LP – 19 tracks in all – with more by Kevin Saunderson, Gaiser, Mr G, Waajeed, Octave One, Delano Smith, Brain, and others! CD

VariousNairobi Calling – Selected Recordings 1976 to 1996 ... LP
No Wahala Sounds (UK), Late 70s/1980s/1990s. New Copy ... $19.99
A revelatory selection of tracks recorded on a Nairobi music scene that was really overflowing with creative energy – so much so that the music here doesn't just come from Kenyan talents, but from Tanzania and the Congo as well! There's a positive spirit that imbues most of the grooves – sounds that are upbeat and pulsating with rhythm – yet also put together at a level that's never too commercial at all – especially resisting the temptations that over-polished so much other music from the continent during the big world music boom of the 80s. Instead, these tunes revel in long, open interplay between guitars, bass, percussion, and voice – on selections that include "Ochieng DJ Komoro" by Victoria Chomeka, "Maria" by Orchestra Moja One Band, "Remmy Belesa" by Biashara Jazz Band, "Gilbert Wambida" by International De Nelly, "Amemiki (part 2)" by Orchestra Bana Ekanga, and "Nakuomba" by Baba Ilunga Wa Ilunga – a lost archive track, which appears here for the first time ever. ✨✧ VariousOriginal Sound Of Mali ... CD
Mr Bongo (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the best collections of music from Mali that we've ever heard – and a set that nicely gets past some of the overdone cliches of that scene, to really focus on the kind of overlooked 70s gems that showcase sides of the music that are funky, jazzy, and plenty soulful throughout! There's a fast-flowing vibe here that's linked a lot more closely to Nigerian sounds of the 70s than you might expect – music that's different than some of the bluer tones of bigger Malian artists that get more global exposure – and which showcase a huge explosion of sounds during one of the nation's most fervent cultural moments! The focuses on music that's upbeat, righteous, and plenty positive – work from some of the best groups on the scene of the time, who were urging each other on to find newly joyous means of expression. Titles include "Fama Allah" by Idrissa Soumaoro Et L'Eclipse De L'Ija, "Fadinga Kouma" by Zani Diabate Et Let Super Djata Band, "Komangi Bela" by Alou Vane & Daouda Sangare, "Mandjou" by Salif Keita & Ambassadeurs International, "Moudilo" by Rail BAnd, "Mangan" by Super Tentemba Jazz, "Yayoroba" by Sory Bamba, "Worodara" by Super Djata BAnd, "M'Bouram Mousso" by Les Ambassadeurs Du Motel De Bamako, and "Nissodia" by Idrissa Soumaoro Et L'Eclipse De L'Ija. Fania All-StarsBamboleo ... LP
Fania, 1988. Very Good+ ... $14.99
Don't let the cheesy 80s cover of this album put you off, because the album's got a classic Fania All-Stars groove all the way through – and is quite possibly one of the last great sessions by the combo! The title cut "Bamboleo" is the group's great version of the Gypsy Kings hit – almost their attempt to say "hey buddy, long before you cracked the charts, we were THE international Latin act". And to follow it up, the All Stars return to some of their early 70s modes of blending in more familiar soul tunes with their salsa vibe – taking on both "Don't You Worry About A Thing" and "Smooth Operator", and managing to come up with great versions of both. Francisco Navarro plays some great guitar on the record – and other tracks include "Quiero Saber", "Djobi Bjoba", and "Siento". LP, Vinyl record album
