✨✧ VariousDJ Format's Psych Out – A Collection Of International Funky Fuzz-Laden Gems ... CD
BBE (UK), 1960s/1970s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Cool cuts from around the globe – all brought together in one wonderfully funky set! The music here all draws heavily from American funk and psych styles – and often uses some slightly different instrumentation, or more regional inflection – to make the usual psych funk styles sound even more groovy and exotic – in a mindblowing way that makes the entire set a real musical delight! Most tracks are instrumental – heavy on drums and fuzzy guitar – but there's a few vocal moments, too – and the funk current is super-strong, way more so than on other collections that promise a heavy bottom, but usually just present offbeat psych. Titles include "Jet Pop" by Bana Pop Band, "Foxy Lady" by 49th Blue Streak, "Karate Chop" by The Tijuana Brats, "Stari Dvorac" by Pro Arte, "Nie Przejziemy Do Historii" by Krzysztof Klenczon, "Louis Louis" by Friar Tuck, "Time Of Machines" by Sergio Ferraresi, and "The Shaman's Dance" by Alexandr Sergeyevich. DJ KawasakiYou Can Make It ... CD
Columbia (Japan), 2007. Used ... $19.99
A smoking little set from one of the most soulful talents on the Japanese club scene – the mighty DJ Kawasaki, who seems to be breathing new life into international house music with tremendous efforts like this! The feel here is totally great – soaring, joyful, and totally filled with live, love, and energy – none of the clunky beats of the too-experimental crowds, or the fake soul that's been seeping into New York or London work of late – just right-on-the-money groovers, served up with an instant-classic sort of sound! Lyrics are all in English – and sung by a host of guests who include Gordon Chambers, Lena Fujii, Karin, Tasita D'Mour, and Heather Johnson – and a few tracks are instrumental, to further show Kawasaki's talents with a warmly soulful groove on his own. Titles include "Cosmic Lullaby", "Elevate Your Mind", "You Can Make It", "Because Of You", "Planetary Track", "So Far Away", "It Makes Me Feel Like Dancin", and "Bright Like Light". CD

VariousDetroit Love Vol 2 ... LP
Planet E, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
A heavy helping of Detroit Love – and one that will also make you love Detroit too – or, at least, completely respect the city for having such a continually rewarding underground over the last few decades – long after the possibility of chart hits or bigger fame have passed! Detroit's electronic scene first got notice at the end of the 80s – when its own grooves were rising to rival the house music coming from Chicago – and while that moment sparked some big international fame, the decades have continued to see the city working to improve, refine, and mature their initial impulses – with the sorts of fantastic sounds that you'll hear in this set! Not all the music is new, but most of it is – and the set combines some wonderfully fresh tracks from the Carl Craig side of the universe – both his own music, and work by key contemporaries too – with titles that include "It Is What It Is" by Rhythim Is Rhythim, "Rosalie" by Green Velvet & Carl Craig, "Do It All Night (C2 edit)" by DJ Minx, "Credit Card (Gay Marvine rmx)" by BMG & Sal P, "Satori" by Ectomorph, "Formulaic Mode" by Mirko Loko & Stacey Pullen, "My Love Check" by Claude Vonstroke, and "Alleys Of Your Mind" by The Dirtbombs. VariousHardcore Traxx – Dance Mania Records 1986 to 1997 ... CD
Strut (UK), Late 80s/1990s. Used 2 CDs ... $12.99
A massive overview of one of the longest-running house labels from Chicago – the crucial Dance Mania imprint, second only to Trax and DJ International for its huge run of talent! Dance Mania came into being a few years into the first wave of Chicago house, but also kept its dedication to the underground for a lot longer, too – and really helped a tremendous amount of young artists to hit the studio and get their chance at turning out a groove! The label was housed in the upstairs of Barney's Records – an important west side record store and one-stop – and it dedicated itself to tracks that were maybe a bit faster, simpler, and more direct than some of the other house in Chicago at the time – often with a great style of stripping things down to all their best elements, yet still keeping things warm and soulful overall. The package features great notes on the label – and on the great Ray Barney himself (we miss your store, Ray!) – and titles include "7 Ways (club)" by Hercules, "Crazy Wild" by Club Style, "Love Will Find A Way (club)" by Victor Romeo, "Toxic Waste (club)" by Tim Harper, "I'm So Deep" by Vincent Floyd, "Falling (Armando's house mix)" by 326, "Da Bomb" by DJ Deeon, "Ghetto Shout Out" by Parris Mitchell, "Hit It From The Back" by Traxmen & Eric Martin, "The Original Video Clash – Video Class 2 (street mix)" by DJ Funk, "Feel My MF Bass" by Paul Johnson, and "Work Out" by Top Cat. 2CD set features 24 tracks in all! VariousNairobi Calling – Selected Recordings 1976 to 1996 ... LP
No Wahala Sounds (UK), Late 70s/1980s/1990s. New Copy ... $13.99
A revelatory selection of tracks recorded on a Nairobi music scene that was really overflowing with creative energy – so much so that the music here doesn't just come from Kenyan talents, but from Tanzania and the Congo as well! There's a positive spirit that imbues most of the grooves – sounds that are upbeat and pulsating with rhythm – yet also put together at a level that's never too commercial at all – especially resisting the temptations that over-polished so much other music from the continent during the big world music boom of the 80s. Instead, these tunes revel in long, open interplay between guitars, bass, percussion, and voice – on selections that include "Ochieng DJ Komoro" by Victoria Chomeka, "Maria" by Orchestra Moja One Band, "Remmy Belesa" by Biashara Jazz Band, "Gilbert Wambida" by International De Nelly, "Amemiki (part 2)" by Orchestra Bana Ekanga, and "Nakuomba" by Baba Ilunga Wa Ilunga – a lost archive track, which appears here for the first time ever. Groupe RTDDancing Devils Of Djibouti ... CD
Ostinato (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99
A really great combo from the small nation of Djibouti – stepping out here in one of the first international record releases from that company in decades – a shuttered legacy to the rest of the world, given the tight control of music by the state! Yet despite that situation, the Groupe Radio Television Djibouti have a really joyous sound – one that often echoes other East African styles, particularly some of the reed work and vocal inflections of Ethiopian music – but which also features a criss-crossing of influences from Indian and Jamaican music, and American jazz! There's also some nice keyboards on the set, warmed up by the acoustic elements – and titles include "Will Wille", "Suuban", "Liso Daymo", "Uurkan Kaadonaya", "Buuraha U Dheer", "Alto's Interlude", and "Raani". Sugar MinottGhetto Pickney Style – A Crucial Collection ... CD
Burning Bush/Fuel 2000, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used ... $12.99
Though he did cut a few roots sides later in his career, Sugar Minott was one of the pioneers of the Dancehall style in the late 70s and early 80s, and though he was huge in Jamaica, he never really made the jump to the international scene, perhaps because his good-time Jamaican soul didn't have the militancy of Roots or the in your face toasting of the more popular DJs, just sweet vocals over solid rhythms. 20 great tracks in the original dancehall style, laced with the sweet vocals, including "Musical Murder", "We Rule Rhythm", "Hot Fe The Riddim", "Gone Away", "Play This Rub A Dub", "No Turning Back", "Teach The Youth The Truth" and "Rocking From Dusk Till Dawn". ✨✧ Amadou BalakeTaximen ... CD
Popular African Music (Germany), Late 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Some of the earliest work from one of Burkina Faso's greatest musicians! Although Amadou Balake has achieved his greatest notoriety as one of Africa's finest salseros – recording with New York players in the late 70s and most recently working in the all-star Africando project – this collection finds him in a less idiomatic mode. To be sure, there's a distinctive Afro-Cuban feeling to this deeply soulful, gritty singing, but the skittering, insistent drumming and astonishing highlife-style lead guitar form a wonderfully original blend with his magical voice. Add some terrific saxophone work that recalls the zulu jive of South Africa and you've got something very special. This CD compiles two explosive albums cut in Nigeria for the Sacodis International label in 1978 and 1979. Tracks include "Taximen", "Migoussia", "Kikiriki", "Kanan N'Djanfa", and "Soum Grouba". CD
