Comet (France), 2001. Used ... $4.99
Darkly beautiful work from Art Konik – a mixture of jazz samples and acoustic playing on piano, percussion, sax, and occasional other instrumentation. The overall feel is similar to some of the recent work on French Blue Note – but with less of a house base, and more of a serious compositional approach overall. Bobby Few guest stars on bass on one track – and titles include "Afro Monkey", "Mingpark", "La Miche", "New York", "Finger", and "Clap". CD

Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2020. New Copy ... $16.99
The title might seem familiar – given that Blundetto's first album was called Bad Bad Things – but this record really shows a strong evolution of his sound over the ten years since that release – the shifting sense of sound between hip hop, global roots, and more dynamic elements – sounding even better here than on any previous records! Blundetto works with production help from Blackjoy – in a mode that might have been born in hip hop studio techniques, but which here has much more of a French post-colonial vibe – wrapping together different global elements, soulful expressions, and jazzy flourishes with effortless ease – into a style that's completely his own overall. Titles include "Fly High", "Pais Azucar", "Barcelona", "Sunday In The Club", "Feel The Cold", "Bingi", "Menina Mulher Da Pele Preta", "Antiguas", and "Mo'Dinero". CD

Kuarup (Brazil), 2018. Used ... $9.99
A celebration of 60s years of bossa nova by two Brazilian singers who were almost with the genre at the start! And while the ladies might look like the Golden Girls on the cover, they come across with a lot more youth and verve on the record – especially Soares, who seems as if she hasn't aged in decades! Backings are relatively light – in that modern bossa mode used by the Kuarup label so much – and the setting is live, but still nicely intimate – on titles that include "Sonho De Um Carnaval", "Demais", "Morrer De Amor", "Outra Vez", "Dindi", "Sem Voce", "Os Grilos", "Vem Balancar", and "Minha Saudade". Cadence/Edsel (UK), Late 50s. New Copy 8CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic look at the early years of Andy Williams – and the first set we've ever seen to do full justice to his work for Cadence Records! Williams is maybe best known for his 60s work on TV and his many hits for Columbia Records – but in the mid 50s, the young singer signed with the pioneering Cadence label, also home to early work by The Chordettes and Everly Brothers – a company whose handling of Andy's superb vocals was wonderful right from the start, and never an attempt to shoehorn a unique talent into the record charts of the time! Instead, Cadence had great handling of Andy Williams right from the start – often allowing him to do thematic albums in the way that Sinatra was doing at Capitol, but maybe with an even more committed style, as some of these records are really wonderfully unified sets. The package presents each album in tiny LP-styled sleeves, along with bonus tracks and non-LP material – all in a cool slipcover with a bonus booklet of notes. Albums include Andy Williams Sings Steve Allen, Andy Williams, Sings Rogers & Hammerstein, Two Time Winners, To You Sweetheart Aloha, Lonely Street, Village Of St Bernadette, and Under Paris Skies – plus 15 bonus tracks too. A dream of a bossa session – the kind of cool, yet sophisticated session that made the 60s Elenco label so great! The album features vocals by the completely lovely Odette Lara – a blue-tinged singer who really gets at the melancholy in the music – which is superbly underscored by the lyrics of the great Vinicus De Moraes, who wrote the tunes in conjunction with guitarist Baden Powell – at a level that's as great as their other 60s work together! Backings are by the sublime Moacir Santos – who knows how to balance modern impulses, jazz, and a bossa groove – on titles that include "Astronauta", "Berimbau", "Seja Feliz", "Samba Preludio", "Deve Ser Amor", "E Hoje So", "Diexa", and "Alem Do Amor". The title's a great one for this album by Blundetto – given that the groove is beautifully deep, and the music moves at a pace that would make it hard to do anything but dance slow! Yet the set's not a sleepy one – as it's got all the richness and complexity of previous Blundetto efforts, and show the continuing evolution to dubbier corners of the musical spectrum explored on the past few records – a revision of Jamaican roots, but with a sound that's never standard reggae at all – despite guest appearances from Ken Boothe, Cornell Campbell, and others. Titles include "Good Ol Days", "My Weed My Queen", "Passed The Worst", "Have A Little Faith", "Story Never Told", "Colombette", "Chamber Dub", "History Dance", and "Satta". CD

EvaEva (1974) ... CD
EMI/Odeon (Brazil), 1974. New Copy ... $3.99
Sweet 70s grooving from Brazilian singer Eva – a bit of soul, a bit of easy, all styled together nicely by orchestrations from the magical maestro Gaya! Gaya's work here is similar to his best backings for other artists in the Blue Brazil generation – a mix of American pop, post-bossa instrumentation, and in this case, some very slight electric touches – kind of hipping up the tunes a bit with some nice keyboards! The album's got a really nice version of "Moon River" that skips along at a nice pace – plus some great originals that offer a strong update to the sound of other Brazilian pop/post-bossa singers, like Doris Monteiro or Claudette Soares. Titles include "O Homem Do Tempo", "Vinte Leguas", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Olha Eu Aqui Oh Oh Oh", "Talisma", and Sonho Lindo". CD

Armando SciasciaViolin Reactions (200 gram pressing) ... LP
Vedette/Roundtable (Australia), 1974. New Copy ... $18.99 26.98
The definitely got the title right on this one – as the album's got plenty of violin, but never in the way you might expect – as the instrument is used in all these weird and wonderful ways that really make the record a treat! There's neither classical nor jazz-based violin approaches at play – and instead, Armando Sciascia almost seems to be trying to find all the weird, offbeat sounds he can from the instrument – but in ways that are sometimes funky, sometimes dark, and always pretty darn compelling! Some tracks have these chugging rhythms that come from percussion by Tullio De Piscopo – best known for his later club work – others have a spare, moody vibe with offbeat string passages echoing in space – almost as if they're electronic, with weirdly spacey qualities. The record is quite experimental for a sound library session – and titles include "Reagente B", "Acidocloroscuccinico", "Atomo Asimmetrico", "Nucleofilo", "Planctonico", "Enantiomorfo", and "Substrato Ax". Sonya Spence & OthersIn The Dark/Sings Love ... CD
High Note/Doctor Bird (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
Two full albums from the lovely Sonya Spence – plus a bonus CD of female reggae tunes by some of her contemporaries! First up is In The Dark – a sublime reggae soul classic from Sonya Spence – a singer with a voice that's maybe a bit lighter than some of her Kingston contemporaries – but which is perfectly couched in the sort of production that really sends things in the right direction! Sonya sings, but almost with a whisper-like quality – and the rhythms are gentle, and sometimes given some slightly spacey production touches – so that a tinkling piano might take off next to the lyrics, or a drum part might splash a bit with a deeper, darker vibe. All of this really brings a lot out of Sonya's unique vocals – and lets the singer shine on tunes that include "Jet Plane", "It Hurts To Be Alone", "Damn Him", "Make Love To Me In The Dark", "Peace & Unity", and "Why Did You Leave Me". Sonya Spence Sings Love has the singer coming across with a fuller, richer sound than before – really finding her sense of place in the rhythms, which have a laidback, soulful vibe that's perfect for the lovers rock mood of the set! Tunes include a few great reggae remakes, and some originals – titles that include "Let Love Flow On", "Talk Love", "Fantasy", "Where Is The Love", "Now I Know What Love Is", and "Come With Me". CD2 features High Note Sisters – 21 more tracks from Sonya's labelmates, with work by Lorna Bennett, Marcia Griffiths, Judy Mowatt, Novelette Barnett, Lillian Williams, Daughter Cherry, Claudette Miller, and others! A set that's every bit as wonderful as you'd guess from its title and cover – a killer package of all-girl rockers, and one that's filled with rare gems from the 60s! The material here is definitely a lot harder-hitting than more familiar girl group sounds of the 60s – as the tunes are drenched in plenty of fuzz, recorded with a garagey style, and often rock just as hard as any male cuts from the time! Most material is by US groups, but there's also some surprising gems from overseas too – and the package is a much-needed look at this under-documented side of 60s rock and roll. Titles include "I'm Gonna Destroy That Boy" by The What Four, "I've Been Workin On You (demo)" by The Feminine Complex, "You Don't Love Me" by The Starlets, "Climb That Tree" by She Trinity, "Fraternity USA" by The Lady Bugs, "Here I Am In Love Again" by The Girls, "The Beatles Are In Town" by The Fondettes, "Don't You Think It's Fine" by Project X, "Hold On" by Sharon Tandy, "Tell Me" by The Termites, "He's Something Else" by The Liverbirds, and "Shakin All Over" by Raylene & The Blue Angels. Great girl group grooves from Laurie Records – one of the powerhouses of the genre during the 60s! The set brings together some of the best that Laurie had to offer at the time – not just hits, but some great lesser-known gems that really make the package stand out from other girl group sets on the market – a wonderful collection of both rock and soul cuts that show there's still plenty left to discover if you know where to dig! Tracks are pulled not just from the main Laurie label, but also from other imprints too – including the Rust, Providence, and Harmon labels – and as usual, Ace has done a bang-up job with the notes and images – helping us learn plenty about the music while our ears are enjoying the sounds. Titles include "Hanky Panky" by The Summits, "Shy Guy" by The Charmers, "You're The Love Of My Life" by Brenda Lee Jones, "Stop Look & Listen" by The Chiffons, "He's Mine" by Linda & The Lindettes, "Your Big Mistake" by The Del-Rons, "I Still Love You" by Les Girls, "He's My Dream Boy" by Marie Antoinette, "How Can I Be Sure" by Gloria Dennis, "Circus Girl" by Bernadette Carroll, "Whenever A Teenager Cries" by The Jeans, "Nothing Went Right" by Lorrie Darnell, and "Your Life Is Gone" by Reparata. Numero, 1960s. New Copy ... $7.99 15.98
A great little look not just at a small indie label of the 60s – but also that decade's larger underground music scene – served up here on a set of recordings done for the tiny Cleopatra label in New Jersey! There's definitely lots of those "wanna be hitmaker" cuts that can make a tiny label so great – but Cleopatra also had a great ear for talents who ran around the farther range of pop as well – cool female singers with a nice slinky sound, or male artists who might have been going for deeper styles that wouldn't really flourish more strongly until a few years later in the mainstream – all captured with surprising care and taste by label head Tommy Falcone! As with the best of the other Numero sets like this, the story behind the label is as great as the music itself – quite compelling, given that Falcone and most of his artists were just a stone's throw away from New York – but often a world away, given the gap between mainstream fame and indie obscurity. The set features 26 tracks in all – and includes some by The Inmates, probably the biggest act to come from Falcone's studios – plus Bernadette Carroll, The Tabbys, Dick Hunter, Vickie & The Van Dykes, The Ovations, Centuries, Hallmarks, Johnny Silvio, Jimmy Davis, Tommy Manno, Eugene Viscione, and The Shandillons. Yale University Press, 2016. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Ralph J Gleason might just be one of the coolest cats to ever write about music – a key part of the San Francisco scene during the postwar years – where his talents helped illuminate both the worlds of art and music during the beat generation – then really helped shine a spotlight on all the cultural changes in the city during the 60s – which even led to Gleason's role in the founding of Rolling Stone magazine! Gleason always had a great eye (and ear) for things that were new and special, but never in a way that was slavish to the moment – or to its creator – and the book features an initial section on his writings on jazz and blues – with essays on John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Carmen McRae, BB King, John Handy, Vince Guaraldi & Bola Sete, Cal Tjader, Ben Webster, the San Francisco Jazz scene, and other diverse topics. The second section features Gleason on folk and rock – with bits on Jefferson Airplane, Hank Williams, Lenny Bruce, Odetta, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and others – and the final section features articles on politics and culture – covering topics that include Richard Nixon, radio payola, Law & Order, flower children, and other slices of society, seen from the Gleason viewpoint. Book is hardcover, and 309 pages. Book

Luglio/Wah Wah (Spain), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A really experimental set from the Italian scene of the 70s – an album that might easily fit in the great legacy of albums on the Cramps label, even though it was issued by the artist himself! The approach is very unique – as the record mostly features organ and keyboard lines from Giacomo Mino Di Martino – a musician with roots in prog, but who'd also discovered much more avant, creative territory over the years – partly in collaboration with his wife, actress Terra Di Benedetto, who provides some unusual vocalizations on the set! The whole thing is very different than anything we can think of – at times, almost like some of the better melodic moments of the UK industrial underground of the mid 80s, but also with some of the starker qualities that mark the Italian avant scene of the time the album was issued. A second set of grooves from the Seattle scene – and a much-needed follow-up to the first Wheedles Groove compilation! This set picks up where the last one left off – still digging the funk and soul of the 70s, but also following the scene into clubby territory, modern soul, and boogie too – with a range of under-discovered gems that groove right into the mid 80s! Just about all the work here is new to our ears – pulled from obscure indie singles from the city's small labels – and served up in some surprisingly sophisticated styles that match all the poise and class of the best Cali soul of the time. Light In The Attic have done a really wonderful job with the package – deep notes that really match the research that went into the record – but a sense of funk and flair that makes the whole thing way more than just a history project. A really loving look at a sometimes-forgotten side of the Prestige Records label – a company that's famous for giving the world plenty of hardbop and soul jazz in the 50s and 60s, but which also helped lay the groundwork for American spiritual jazz to come! Long before Impulse, Strata East, MPS, and other labels were working with the music – and even long before Coltrane first started to soar into the cosmos – Prestige was letting its musicians really experiment with unusual rhythms, extended solos, and even some non-Western instrumentation – which resulted in a set of records that were years ahead of their time, and which still sound pretty darn mindblowing all these many years later! The package is a long-overdue entry in this hip series from Jazzman Records, and will also have you looking at your collection of older jazz in a completely new way – thanks to tracks that include "Summertime" by Ahmed Abul-Malik, "Love Theme From Spartacus" by Yusef Lateef, "Dorian" by Roy Haynes, "Rip A Dip" by The Latin Jazz Quintet, "Warm Canto" by Mal Waldron, "Organ Rounds" by Moondog, "Death & Taxes" by Walt Dickerson, "Song Of Delilah" by Ahmed Abul-Malik, and "Modette" by Roy Haynes – plus 70s tracks "I've Known Rivers" by Gary Bartz Ntu Troop and "Peace" by Idris Muhammad.
