BlundettoBad Bad Things (limited edition including stickers & poster) ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2010. Used ... $19.99
The first full length from Blundetto – a Parisian radio programmer and artist showing impeccable taste here – with a slyly dubby and reggae & soul influenced groove and featuring collaborations with The Budos Band horns, Chico Mann, Tommy Guerrero, Lateef The Truthspeaker, Shawn Lee, Genreal Elektricks and Hindi Zahra! Blundetto shares compositional credits with the guest, and it has the feel of collaboration with that atmopherically soulful core groove. Really nice work for the Heavenly Sweetness label! Titles including the Blundetto cover of the Bob James classic "Nautilus" plus "Voices", "Mustang", "Mi Condena", "Cuban Shirt", "Party Animals". "White Birds", "Ken Park", "My One Girl", "Bad BadThings" and "Sunset Stroll". CD
(Out of print, limited edition – comes in a cool box with foil cover, stickers, and a poster designed by CHAOS.)

BlundettoGood Good Things ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2020. New Copy ... $16.99
The title might seem familiar – given that Blundetto's first album was called Bad Bad Things – but this record really shows a strong evolution of his sound over the ten years since that release – the shifting sense of sound between hip hop, global roots, and more dynamic elements – sounding even better here than on any previous records! Blundetto works with production help from Blackjoy – in a mode that might have been born in hip hop studio techniques, but which here has much more of a French post-colonial vibe – wrapping together different global elements, soulful expressions, and jazzy flourishes with effortless ease – into a style that's completely his own overall. Titles include "Fly High", "Pais Azucar", "Barcelona", "Sunday In The Club", "Feel The Cold", "Bingi", "Menina Mulher Da Pele Preta", "Antiguas", and "Mo'Dinero". CD

BlundettoWarm My Soul ... CD
Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2012. Used ... $3.99
Blundetto's groove is even nicer than before – honed through work on singles and remix efforts – and turned towards a rich array of global roots that really deepen the sound of this album! There's as much 70s African and Jamaican influence going on here as there is a spiritual jazz side – both filtered through 21st Century modes that rework the primal elements, and come up with a fresh new groove – yet one that's always respectful to the originators! Guests on the set include the Akale Horns, Shawn Lee, Tommy Guerrero, and Jahdan Blackkamoore – and titles include "Hercules", "Rocroy", "It's All About", "Walk Away Now", "Treat Me Like That", and "I'll Be Home Later". Detto MarianoDelitto Al Ristorante Cinese ... LP
GDM/Musica Per Immagini (Italy), 1981. New Copy ... $36.99
A surprisingly nice score, done for a relatively goofy Italian comedy at the start of the 80s – set inside a Chinese restaurant in Rome, and handled with some definite Eastern touches in the instrumentation – but all mixed up in funky cop show sort of backings – almost an early 80s take on territory explored by Lalo Schifrin in Enter The Dragon! Obviously, the elements are a bit inauthentic – but given that the film's a comedy, we'll give them a pass – and note that they make a nice change from some of the more standard modes of Italian films like this of the time. The instrumentation's more 70s than you'd expect from the date of the film – and is usually somewhat warm, even when electric – and the set features a total of nine tracks from the movie – appearing here on vinyl for the first time ever. OdettaOdetta & The Blues ... CD
Riverside/Original Blues Classics, 1962. Used ... $4.99
Early early work from Odetta – still done in the folksy mode you'd expect from other records of the 60s, but also with a slight flavor of trad jazz too – thanks to the presence of some great musicians on the date! The group features some standout horn work from Buck Clayton on trumpet, Vic Dickenson on trombone, and Herb Hall on clarinet – all of whom bring in a New Orleans flavor to the music that's quite surprising – almost a back door link of Odetta's groove to older African-American traditions, but not in the ways that are usually foregrounded in her work. Other players include Dick Wellstood on piano, Ahmed Abdul-Malik on bass, and Shep Shepherd on drums – and titles include "Hard Oh Lord", "Oh My Babe", "Yonder Come The Blues", "Make Me A Pallet On Your Floor", "Hogan's Alley", and "Leavin This Mornin". Claudette Soares & Alaide Costa60 Anos De Bossa ... CD
Kuarup (Brazil), 2018. Used ... $4.99
A celebration of 60s years of bossa nova by two Brazilian singers who were almost with the genre at the start! And while the ladies might look like the Golden Girls on the cover, they come across with a lot more youth and verve on the record – especially Soares, who seems as if she hasn't aged in decades! Backings are relatively light – in that modern bossa mode used by the Kuarup label so much – and the setting is live, but still nicely intimate – on titles that include "Sonho De Um Carnaval", "Demais", "Morrer De Amor", "Outra Vez", "Dindi", "Sem Voce", "Os Grilos", "Vem Balancar", and "Minha Saudade". EMI/Odeon (Brazil), 1974. Used ... $2.99
Sweet 70s grooving from Brazilian singer Eva – a bit of soul, a bit of easy, all styled together nicely by orchestrations from the magical maestro Gaya! Gaya's work here is similar to his best backings for other artists in the Blue Brazil generation – a mix of American pop, post-bossa instrumentation, and in this case, some very slight electric touches – kind of hipping up the tunes a bit with some nice keyboards! The album's got a really nice version of "Moon River" that skips along at a nice pace – plus some great originals that offer a strong update to the sound of other Brazilian pop/post-bossa singers, like Doris Monteiro or Claudette Soares. Titles include "O Homem Do Tempo", "Vinte Leguas", "Na Baixa Do Sapateiro", "Olha Eu Aqui Oh Oh Oh", "Talisma", and Sonho Lindo". CD

Far Out Monster Disco OrchestraFar Out Monster Disco Orchestra ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2014. New Copy 2 CDs ... $9.99 19.99
A really wonderful project that was years in the making – a mix of American club and Brazilian elements – put together by a group that includes members of Azymuth and Banda Black Rio, as well as the legendary Arthur Verocai! Jose Roberto Bertrami's the strongest contributor here – and the music really echoes that great late 70s/early 80s point when the Azymuth fusion groove crossed over into tighter, funkier territory – coming off here with a sound that's got really universal appeal and a wickedly classic vibe overall – like some unusual cross-breeding of Brazilian grooves and Salsoul Records! Vocals are by Mia Mendes and Marcina Arnold, but the instrumentation is even better than the lyrics – filled with jazzy touches, blended with bits of strings, and perfectly produced all the way through. Really tremendous stuff – one of the freshest records we've heard from Far Out in years – with titles that include "Mystery", "Keep Believing", "Dead Dance", "The Last Carnival", "A Disco Supreme", "Vendetta", and "Don't Cha Know He's Alright". 2CD set features 8 more bonus remix tracks too! Four TopsFour Tops Greatest Hits ... LP
Motown, 1960s. Very Good ... $6.99
Despite the fame of their big hits – like "Reach Out I'll Be There", "I Can't Help Myself", "Baby I Need Your Loving", and "It's The Same Old Song", all of which are on this set, and which have been heard ad infinitum – the Four Tops are actually a heck of a great vocal group, with harmonies that blew away many of their contemporaries, and which keep their work shining long past the hits. This set's got some nice cuts that fall into that category – like "Bernadette", and "Ask The Lonely" – and the package is about as solid as you'd expect. LP, Vinyl record album

Ralph J GleasonMusic In The Air (hardcover) ... Book
Yale University Press, 2016. New Copy ... $6.99 30.00
Ralph J Gleason might just be one of the coolest cats to ever write about music – a key part of the San Francisco scene during the postwar years – where his talents helped illuminate both the worlds of art and music during the beat generation – then really helped shine a spotlight on all the cultural changes in the city during the 60s – which even led to Gleason's role in the founding of Rolling Stone magazine! Gleason always had a great eye (and ear) for things that were new and special, but never in a way that was slavish to the moment – or to its creator – and the book features an initial section on his writings on jazz and blues – with essays on John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Carmen McRae, BB King, John Handy, Vince Guaraldi & Bola Sete, Cal Tjader, Ben Webster, the San Francisco Jazz scene, and other diverse topics. The second section features Gleason on folk and rock – with bits on Jefferson Airplane, Hank Williams, Lenny Bruce, Odetta, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and others – and the final section features articles on politics and culture – covering topics that include Richard Nixon, radio payola, Law & Order, flower children, and other slices of society, seen from the Gleason viewpoint. Book is hardcover, and 309 pages. Book

Armando SciasciaViolin Reactions (200 gram pressing) ... LP
Vedette/Roundtable (Australia), 1974. New Copy ... $18.99 26.98
The definitely got the title right on this one – as the album's got plenty of violin, but never in the way you might expect – as the instrument is used in all these weird and wonderful ways that really make the record a treat! There's neither classical nor jazz-based violin approaches at play – and instead, Armando Sciascia almost seems to be trying to find all the weird, offbeat sounds he can from the instrument – but in ways that are sometimes funky, sometimes dark, and always pretty darn compelling! Some tracks have these chugging rhythms that come from percussion by Tullio De Piscopo – best known for his later club work – others have a spare, moody vibe with offbeat string passages echoing in space – almost as if they're electronic, with weirdly spacey qualities. The record is quite experimental for a sound library session – and titles include "Reagente B", "Acidocloroscuccinico", "Atomo Asimmetrico", "Nucleofilo", "Planctonico", "Enantiomorfo", and "Substrato Ax". A totally groovy gem from the great Piero Umiliani – and one of his rarest soundtracks of the 70s – and a set that brings together so many different wonderful strands of his sound! Some tunes have sweeping strings, others have offbeat vocals, some have quirky instrumentation, and a few even have those weird "Mah-Nah" vocals from his huge international hit! The music is playful one minute, dreamy the next – and plenty groovy all the way through – with titles that include "A Caccia Di Donne", "Io E La Mia Schiava", "In Rissho", "Battesimo", "Flirt A Rio", "L'Indigena Piu Bella", and "La Schiava". VariousDestroy That Boy! – More Girls With Guitars ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A set that's every bit as wonderful as you'd guess from its title and cover – a killer package of all-girl rockers, and one that's filled with rare gems from the 60s! The material here is definitely a lot harder-hitting than more familiar girl group sounds of the 60s – as the tunes are drenched in plenty of fuzz, recorded with a garagey style, and often rock just as hard as any male cuts from the time! Most material is by US groups, but there's also some surprising gems from overseas too – and the package is a much-needed look at this under-documented side of 60s rock and roll. Titles include "I'm Gonna Destroy That Boy" by The What Four, "I've Been Workin On You (demo)" by The Feminine Complex, "You Don't Love Me" by The Starlets, "Climb That Tree" by She Trinity, "Fraternity USA" by The Lady Bugs, "Here I Am In Love Again" by The Girls, "The Beatles Are In Town" by The Fondettes, "Don't You Think It's Fine" by Project X, "Hold On" by Sharon Tandy, "Tell Me" by The Termites, "He's Something Else" by The Liverbirds, and "Shakin All Over" by Raylene & The Blue Angels. Great girl group grooves from Laurie Records – one of the powerhouses of the genre during the 60s! The set brings together some of the best that Laurie had to offer at the time – not just hits, but some great lesser-known gems that really make the package stand out from other girl group sets on the market – a wonderful collection of both rock and soul cuts that show there's still plenty left to discover if you know where to dig! Tracks are pulled not just from the main Laurie label, but also from other imprints too – including the Rust, Providence, and Harmon labels – and as usual, Ace has done a bang-up job with the notes and images – helping us learn plenty about the music while our ears are enjoying the sounds. Titles include "Hanky Panky" by The Summits, "Shy Guy" by The Charmers, "You're The Love Of My Life" by Brenda Lee Jones, "Stop Look & Listen" by The Chiffons, "He's Mine" by Linda & The Lindettes, "Your Big Mistake" by The Del-Rons, "I Still Love You" by Les Girls, "He's My Dream Boy" by Marie Antoinette, "How Can I Be Sure" by Gloria Dennis, "Circus Girl" by Bernadette Carroll, "Whenever A Teenager Cries" by The Jeans, "Nothing Went Right" by Lorrie Darnell, and "Your Life Is Gone" by Reparata. ✨✧ VariousTeen Expo – The Cleopatra Label ... CD
Numero, 1960s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little look not just at a small indie label of the 60s – but also that decade's larger underground music scene – served up here on a set of recordings done for the tiny Cleopatra label in New Jersey! There's definitely lots of those "wanna be hitmaker" cuts that can make a tiny label so great – but Cleopatra also had a great ear for talents who ran around the farther range of pop as well – cool female singers with a nice slinky sound, or male artists who might have been going for deeper styles that wouldn't really flourish more strongly until a few years later in the mainstream – all captured with surprising care and taste by label head Tommy Falcone! As with the best of the other Numero sets like this, the story behind the label is as great as the music itself – quite compelling, given that Falcone and most of his artists were just a stone's throw away from New York – but often a world away, given the gap between mainstream fame and indie obscurity. The set features 26 tracks in all – and includes some by The Inmates, probably the biggest act to come from Falcone's studios – plus Bernadette Carroll, The Tabbys, Dick Hunter, Vickie & The Van Dykes, The Ovations, Centuries, Hallmarks, Johnny Silvio, Jimmy Davis, Tommy Manno, Eugene Viscione, and The Shandillons. Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
That's Ray Vernon, not Vernon Wray – but both names are correct, as Ray's the brother of guitar giant Link Wray – and works here under an odd variation of his family name, but on an equally raw set of vintage rockers! Ray's a singer, but also a guitarist – and brother Link joins in on a number of these tracks with the kind of moody raw twang that made his famous instrumentals so great – as both of the brothers move through a surprisingly rich array of indie singles from the end of the 50s and start of the 60s – shifting in contributions, so that one track might have the guitar right up in the mix, another might have a vocal. There's a whopping 34 tracks in all – and detailed notes that unlock the mystery of these tunes – material that includes "Hold It", "Big City After Dark", "Evil Angel", "Vendetta", "Danger One Way Love", "I'm Countin On You", and "Roughshod" by Ray Vernon with The Raymen – plus "Teenage Cutie" by Lucky Wray, "Flirty Baby" by The Wraymen, "You Can't Make Me Doubt My Baby" by Bunker Hill, "A Brand New Love" by The American Teens, "So Young" by The Dial Tones, "Watch Yourself" by The British Walkers, "Boo Hoo" by Marvin Rainwater, and the cuts "Window Shopping", "I'll Be So Good To You", and "The Freeze" by Link Wray. ✨✧ Sonya Spence & OthersIn The Dark/Sings Love ... CD
High Note/Doctor Bird (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Two full albums from the lovely Sonya Spence – plus a bonus CD of female reggae tunes by some of her contemporaries! First up is In The Dark – a sublime reggae soul classic from Sonya Spence – a singer with a voice that's maybe a bit lighter than some of her Kingston contemporaries – but which is perfectly couched in the sort of production that really sends things in the right direction! Sonya sings, but almost with a whisper-like quality – and the rhythms are gentle, and sometimes given some slightly spacey production touches – so that a tinkling piano might take off next to the lyrics, or a drum part might splash a bit with a deeper, darker vibe. All of this really brings a lot out of Sonya's unique vocals – and lets the singer shine on tunes that include "Jet Plane", "It Hurts To Be Alone", "Damn Him", "Make Love To Me In The Dark", "Peace & Unity", and "Why Did You Leave Me". Sonya Spence Sings Love has the singer coming across with a fuller, richer sound than before – really finding her sense of place in the rhythms, which have a laidback, soulful vibe that's perfect for the lovers rock mood of the set! Tunes include a few great reggae remakes, and some originals – titles that include "Let Love Flow On", "Talk Love", "Fantasy", "Where Is The Love", "Now I Know What Love Is", and "Come With Me". CD2 features High Note Sisters – 21 more tracks from Sonya's labelmates, with work by Lorna Bennett, Marcia Griffiths, Judy Mowatt, Novelette Barnett, Lillian Williams, Daughter Cherry, Claudette Miller, and others! A beautiful 70s session from Italian jazz legends Dino Piana and Oscar Valdambrini – the latter of whom is best known for his cooking 60s sets in the Basso-Valdambrini combo, but who sounds quite different here! Given that Piana plays trombone and Valdambrini plays trumpet, there's a nicely shimmering quality to the set – one that comes from the mixture of their two instruments in the frontline, and some warmly bubbling rhythms in the back. Each player gets plenty of space to solo, but they also share tones and colors together nicely too – and rhythm is from a great trio that features Oscar Rocchi on electric piano, Giorgio Azzolini on bass, and Tullio De Piscopo on drums. Titles include "Arabian Mood", "Drums Atmosphere", "I Due Modi", "Parkeriana", and "Palpitazione". LP, Vinyl record album
