✨✧ D TrainYou're The One For Me (disco vocal version, disco inst version) ... 12-inch
Prelude, 1982. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An excellent 80s groove classic! James D-Train Williams sings it nice and deep on this catchy club cut – but the real groove is put over by Hubert Eaves, who does some excellent work on keyboards! 12-inch, Vinyl record
(In a Prelude sleeve, with mild corner bend.)

✨✧ Gravy TrainGravy Train ... LP
Polydor, 1970. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A cool classic from the early years of Vertigo Records – and a wonderful mixture of hard rock energy and jazzy flute – but all at a level that's very different than Jethro Tull or other flute-based groups of the time! Norman Barratt handles the guitar with lots of fuzzy depth – and JD Hughes is on flute, and works the instrument in all these sharp-edged, overblown ways – as the space of the album allows for plenty of solos from both musicians! Norman also handles lead vocals, with a raw edgey style – and titles include "Coast Road", "The New One", "Dedication To Sid", "Think Of Life", and "Earl Of Pocket Nook". LP, Vinyl record album
(US pressing. Cover has a cutout notch and light surface & edge wear.)

✨✧ D TrainBest Of The 12 Inch Mixes ... CD
Prelude/Unidisc (Canada), Early 80s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Seminal 80s groove from James "D Train" Williams – a killer batch of tracks lifted from his strong 12" singles of the time! D Train was great in that he was one of the few artists of his scene who could come up with a whole album of strong material – but that didn't also stop hip from being the king of the male soul dancefloor tune, as you'll hear on this great little set! The package features 10 cuts in all, all produced and arranged by Hubert Eaves – and titles include "Keep On", "Walk On By", "Music", "Keep Giving Me Love", "Something's On Your Mind", "D Train Theme", "Just Another Night", "Trying To Get Over (edit)", "D Train Theme (dub)", and "You're The One For Me (Labor Of Love mix)". ✨✧ D TrainIn Your Eyes ... LP
Columbia, 1988. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A later effort from James D-Train Williams, but still plenty darn great – and proof that his groove was still one of the strongest in 80s soul music! The style of the set follows from Williams' best earlier work – a bit of bounce at the bottom of most of the tracks, but never too much – just enough to make the titles bubble with enough electricity to carry through the catchiest hooks of the lyrics. Instrumentation includes a fair bit of 80s drum machine rhythms, offset by the deeper soul of Williams' vocals – and titles include "Curious", "Runner", "In Your Eyes", "Order In The House", "Smile", "With All My Heart", and "Shadow Of Another Love". Prelude, 1982. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the most enduring albums on the Prelude label, and a great bit of modern soul by James "D-Train" Williams. Hubert Eaves produced the album, and he added lots of tasty electro keyboards to the set, played with his usual jazzy touches and a nice flourish that gives Williams' voice a strong kick on the best cuts. Sparklingly sophisticated – and proof that the indie labels could still churn out quality soul as well as they could disco! Includes the cuts "You're The One For Me", "D Train Theme", "Walk On By", "Lucky Day", and "Love Vibration". LP, Vinyl record album

BloodstoneTrain Ride To Hollywood – Original Soundtrack ... LP
London, 1975. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $4.99 9.99
Bloodstone's augmented here by a heck of a lot of studio players – more than enough to fill out the needs of the soundtrack to this so-so film from the mid 70s. A few cuts still have the group singing in their better harmony style, but more than a few numbers are remakes of 50s vocal group classics or older standards – in a mode that clearly shows that Bloodstone's control over the score was maybe not as strong as that of other groups working on soundtracks at the time. Titles include "Yakety Yak", "Hooray For Romance", "Go To Sleep", "I'm In Shape", and "Money". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout hole, light wear, and a promo sticker.)

John ColtraneBlue Train (RVG remaster edition) ... CD
Blue Note, 1957. Used ... $3.99
John Coltrane's classic – and only – recording as a leader for Blue Note! The album's no throwaway date, though – as it stands strongly with both Coltrane's other label work of the time, and with the best of the late 50s Blue Note scene – a time when the label was really cooking at full strength! The groove here is a bit harder, heavier, and hardbop-inflected than some of Trane's late 50s sides with Red Garland – thanks to a lineup that features Lee Morgan on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Kenny Drew on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. There's a crisp modern edge to the record that really holds up beautifully – even after years of play – and titles include "Blue Train, "Locomotion", "Moment's Notice", and "Lazy Bird". This newly remastered edition includes additional notes and photos, and alternate takes of "Blue Train" and "Lazy Bird"! CD

Clint Eastwood & General SaintStop That Train ... LP
Greensleeves (UK), 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 27.99
There's no stopping the double-dee jay power of Clint Eastwood and General Saint – as they pair together here on a classic album that's every bit as great as their Two Bad DJ set! The mix of voices trading back and forth is wonderful, especially over the laidback rhythms of the set – bridging some early digital modes with a warmth that comes from the way the pair interact – almost more down to earth than a solo dee jay might have, as the duo have a conversational vibe that gets past occasional hyperbole in the solo format. Also interesting is the way the pair can update older themes with a very contemporary vibe – in a set list that includes "Rock With Me", "Vote For We", "Nuclear Crisis", "Shame & Scandal", "Stop Jack", "True Vegetarian", "Everything Crash", "Monkey Man", and "Happy". Excellent work from this hard-blowing St Louis tenorist – a figure who started in more R&B-styled material, but also helped open the door for soul jazz modes in the 60s! The work here predates Jimmy's well-remembered records for Prestige – as the package features early material cut for United Records during the early 50s – tracks that have that amazing tenor sound of Forrest alongside work from Chauncey Locke on trumpet, Bart Dabney on trombone, and either Bunky Parker or Charles Fox on piano. A number of tracks have nice use of congas, making for a mambo jazz mode at times – and titles include Jimmy's classic version of "Night Train" – plus "Calling Dr Jazz", "Mister Goodbeat", "Bolo Blues", "Hey Mrs Jones", and "Coach 13". Montparnasse 2000/Le Tres Jazz Club (France), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 32.99
One of the funkiest records of the French scene of the 70s – a now-legendary sound library album from Jacky Giordano – and one that's filled with amazing keyboards throughout! Jacky stars with grooves that are like some of the best Lalo Schfrin crime/cop modes of the early 70s – then adds in all these excellent keyboard lines, plus a bit of jazz – with some cuts that have warm Rhodes-like lines, others with a spacier moogier groove – all instrumental, and all wonderfully funky! There's a developed depth to the record that goes way beyond just riffing on a groove – a richness that almost puts some of the best cuts at the level of longer CTI keyboard jazz. Titles include "Terefic War", "The Big Mameluk", "Moving Grooving", "Devil's Train", "Sex Girl", "Blue Circuit", and "Tabla Minor". LP, Vinyl record album

Merle HaggardSame Train A Different Time – Merle Haggard Sings The Great Songs Of Jimmie Rodgers ... CD
Capitol/BGO (UK), 1969. New Copy ... $8.99 18.99
A really special album in the career of the great Merle Haggard – a moment when he really started looking back to give credit to those who inspired him – and when he was also really able to express himself in a longer format too! Part of the credit might go to Capitol Records, who trusted Merle so much they not only let him record a concept album, but a 2LP set as well – plenty of space for Haggard to deliver some great spoken passages about the great Jimmie Rodgers, his life, and music – then move into some of Jimmie's classics, but updated nicely with a vibe that's very much Merle's own! Given the way that Hag was stretching out his vocal skills tremendously at the end of the 60s, there's a sense of inflection that's perfect for the bluesy currents of the songs – on titles that include "Blue Yodel No 4", "Waitin For A Train", "Mother The Queen Of My Heart", "My Old Pal", "No Hard Times", "Travelin Blues", "Down The Old Road To Home", "Jimmie's Texas Blues", "Train Whistle Blues", and "Mule Skinner Blues" – plus the classic train song "Hobo Bill's Last Ride". One of Oscar Peterson's biggest records ever – one of those albums we turn up time and time again when digging through classic jazz collections – and for good reason too, given the lasting power of the set! The album's got a rock-solid sound that's filled with soul – almost a bit more down and dirty than some of Peterson's earlier work, very much in the spirit of the group's hit performance of the title track. In a way, the album's almost Oscar's answer to some of the rising younger stars in the soul jazz scene – and is proof that the master still can do things as great as the artists he inspired. ✨✧ Bob DylanSlow Train Coming ... LP
Columbia, 1979. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first album in Dylan's so-called "Christian Period", but it's not really the uber-dramatic departure from the "old" Dylan that it was treated as at the time – gospel soul backing vocals and testifying lyricism for sure, but it sounds more like gospel has come to Dylan than it sounds like Dylan has "gone gospel". Slow Train Coming has a focused approach, ala Blood On The Tracks, even if this train doesn't come close to crossing over onto those particular tracks – and the return to a leaner, more focused vibe is welcome one. It's got stellar studio players in the mix, and producer Jerry Wexler's production touches on a soul sound, but smartly hews to Dylan's vocal style and lyrical focus. Dylan's high bar for a masterpiece given his trailblazing past didn't give this record or the following couple much a chance to succeed on their own merits back in the day, but all these years later...wow, this is really good, passionate stuff. Includes "Gotta Serve Somebody", "Precious Angel", "I Believe In You", "Slow Trait", "Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking", "Do Right To Me Baby (Do Unto Others)", "When You Gonna Wake Up", "Man Gave Name To All The Animals", "When He Returns". Argo, 1958. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A wonderful album from Moody – one of his "comeback" albums for Chess/Argo, recorded after his release from the Overbrook institution, hence the title. By this point, Moody was writing and playing with much more of an edge than during his bebop days – and the record certainly shows that – not only on the title track "Last Train From Overbrook", a jumpy little number that became one of the big new tunes in Moody's book, but on the whole album, which features some well-conceived large charts written by Johnny Pate. Pate and Moody wrote the bulk of the songs, too – and titles include "Yvonne", "Brother Yusef", "The Moody One", "There She Goes", "Tico Tico", and "Why Don't You". The album also features a great double-exposed cover photo, and some of the most chilling liner notes you'll ever read about a jazzman's struggles with addiction. LP, Vinyl record album

Ray Brown is on bass and Ed Thigpen is on drums – and tracks include "Bag's Groove", "Georgia On My Mind", "Easy Does It", "Band Call", and "Night Train". LP, Vinyl record album

When Mos Def came out swinging with Black On Both Sides and we were all left both hot and cold, it seemed maybe Black Star should've never went their separate ways. But then, out came this burning set of dope joints, we all found out Talib could stand solid on his own, with the help of Hi-Tek's soulful production. ✨✧ Donald BrackettLong Slow Train – The Soul Music Of Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings ... Book
Backbeat Books, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The late Sharon Jones has easily been one of the most important voices in soul music of the past few decades – a great talent who left us all too soon, and who had to work very hard to reach the sort of fame she really deserved! Jones was always a very old school sort of soul singer – especially during the 90s moment when she finally got a chance to record – and her story is also a very old school one of struggle and challenge – then one of personal triumph, only to face later challenge again in the form of the cancer that finally took her life. The full story of Jones, the Dap-Kings, and the Daptone label are all recounted here – in a well-penned book that also includes a record-by-record set of details at the end, and a brief section of images in the middle. CD

✨✧ Philippe SardeLe Chat/Le Train – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ... CD
Quartet (Spain), Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Two early 70s scores from Philippe Sarde – both from a time when he was really at the top of his game! Le Chat is a soundtrack that's done with the rich amount of feeling that can make some of the best Sarde scores so special – larger orchestrations, but peppered with solo piano by Philippe – who really knows how to set the mood for his music with a special sense of tone and timing! There's one unusual tune on the set – the vocal number "Le Temps Des Souvenir", sung by Jean Sablon, who's in the film – but all others are instrumental, and include "L'Escalier", "Solitude", "Les Petits Papiers", "Suspense 2", and "Grande Surface". Le Train is a really beautiful little soundtrack from Philippe Sarde – done partly in the mode of the more dramatic French scores of the 60s, but also with some of the lighter, more contemporary elements that made some of Sarde's music a nice step forward from other French composers like Francis Lai! As with Lai, Sarde has a wonderful sense of moment and mood – using familiar elements, but in a very special way – moving way past the obvious with his orchestrations on tunes that include "L'Attaque", "La Nuit", "La Guerre", "Julien", "La Traversee", and "Anna". A pretty amazing batch of soul, R&B, and funk from the Nashville scene – from an astonishing range of years, too! Of course the memorabilia industry that is "Music City USA" is dominated by country music and pop, and this long, long, LONG overdue collection of singles from 1945-1970 demonstrates how much more was going on in East Tennessee beyond Chet Atkins and the Opry! The tunes range from jump blues & soul of the late 40s and 50s, and on through the harmony soul of the 60s and the pre-funk late 60s. 38 tracks on two CDs: "Nashville Jumps" by Cecil Gant, "Just Walkin' In The Rain" by The Prisonaires, "Baby Let's Play House" by Arthur Gunter, "Christene" by Little Hank Crawford, "You Can Make It If You Try" by Gene Allison, "Somebody, Somewhere" by Larry Birdsong, "Monkey Doin' Woman" by Shy Guy Douglas, "What'd I Say" by Etta James, "Snap Your Fingers" by Joe Henderson, "I Want To" by Joe Tex, "The Chokin'" Kind" by Joe Simon, "Rediscover Me" by Johnny Adams and tons more! Soul Train/RCA, 1977. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
The classic first album by Shalamar – that legendary trio that featured a young Jody Watley – all working under the leadership of Soul Train maestro Don Cornelius! Given Don's experience with the growth of 70s soul on his TV show, he's a perfect fit to give the younger singers guidance here – working them through initial modes that are a bit disco, but which also have some of the funkier west coast touches of the Solar Records scene, and a bit of depth that fits the growing strengths of the young singers. The set begins with their classic "Uptown Festival" – a club oriented medley of Motown classics, all strung together in one long track – and other titles include a remake of "Ooh Baby Baby", plus "High On Life", "Beautiful Night", and "You Know". Heavy duty early work from soul legend Ike Turner – recorded in the early 60s, and pulled from a variety of obscure singles on the Innis, Teena, Prann, and Sonja labels! The quality of the work is really great – on a par with, or better than Ike's more famous 60s recordings for the Sue label – and like those sides, done in a style that often features other members of his larger revue! Tina and the Ikettes are singing on a number of tunes, but the CD also features vocals by Fontella Bass, Bobby John, Jimmy Thomas, George Jackson, and Robbie Montgomery – all great soul singers in their own right, and exposed here strongly with tight Ike Turner backings! Titles include "Those Words", "The Drag", "So Fine", "Crazy In Love", "Pee Wee", "So Blue Over You", "My Good Loving", "The Bad Man", "Getting Away", "I Love The Man", and "I Love Nobody But You". CD

Killer funky New Orleans drums! Smokey Johnson is a monster on the kit – kind of to New Orleans what Pretty Purdie was to the NYC funk scene – and although we'd never heard most of these cuts, they're all sublime funky numbers with a very satisfying sound. Most of the cuts are instrumentals – with that great choppy drum sound you'd find in the classic 60s work of artists like Lee Dorsey or Allen Toussaint – and the album's one of the best recent reissues to come out of the Tuff City/Funky Delicacies stable. The album was recorded at a time when Adderley was working with Miles Davis – and as such, the session features a group that includes Miles, blowing trumpet in a cool tone that's a perfect offset to Cannonball's more soulful style on alto sax – also different than the sound of his brother Nat, who was Adderley's more frequent partner on records. A standing room ovation in the A&M Studios – certainly the kind of reception we'd imagine Herb would get during these glory years of his career! The set's one of the most no-nonsense Tijuana Brass sessions of the 60s – a tightly crafted album that has a bit more jazz than usual sneaking in on some of the tunes, but still enough of that snapping, punchy rhythmic approach that makes Herb and the group so great! As usual, the fluidity here is the strongest point – as the A&M touch takes a sound that should be hokey, and flips it into something really really groovy through warm use of compression in the studio. Titles include "Blue Sunday", "Bean Bag", "Work Song", "Our Day Will Come", "Mexican Road Race", and "Freight Train Joe". LP, Vinyl record album

King/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Some of our favorite work ever from the legendary Hank Ballard – a key figure in early R&B, and a singer who cut some big hits with his group The Midnighters – but one who also continued to do some wonderful work for King Records long after his hits – most of which is included in this wonderful set! The package focuses on years that might be deemed "lost" for Hank – a time when he was past the dance hits of the early part of the 60s, and yet to rise as part of the James Brown universe at the end of the decade – although still, in some way, already strongly in the JB side of the spectrum with cuts like these – deep soul gems, funky numbers, and the kind of rough romping tunes that draw from R&B, but have more of a 60s vibe here. CD features 26 cuts in all – including "Poppin The Whip", "Here Comes The Hurt", "Funky Soul Train", "Do it Zulu Style", "Dance Till It Hurtcha", "Let's Get The Show On The Road", "Annie", "Unwind Yourself", "Which Way Should I Turn", "I'm Just A Fool", "Get That Hump In Your Back", "Just You Just You", "A Winner Never Quits", "Somebody's Got To Help Me", and "One Monkey Don't Stop No Show". A sweet set of soundtrack funk – from a film named after one of our favorite streets in Chicago! Although the record's got an approach that's perhaps a bit tighter and smoother than anything going down on Stony in the late 70s, it does manage to share a good deal of styles with the Chi-soul scene of the time – thanks to work on the record from Chicagoans Gene Barge, Sonny Seals, and Tennyson Stephens! Many of the tracks on the set have a bad-walking soul approach – one that's kind of a mixture of funky and bluesy – and these are laid out next to some jazzier instrumentals that we like most of all – tunes that have a great funky soundtrack feel, but with a bit more fusion touches than usual, probably because of the work of David Matthews. Titles include "Percy Fired", "Party Lights", "High Speed Posters", "Back To Business", "Chase The Train", "Gangster City", "Dream Ride", and "Peace Of Mind". LP, Vinyl record album

Les BaxterAfrican Jazz ... LP
Capitol, Late 50s. Very Good+ ... $38.99
One of the coolest, grooviest records we've ever heard from the great Les Baxter – and a real standout set, even amidst his other exotica albums for Capitol! This one really delivers on the "jazz" promised in the title – thanks to strong tenor solos from Plas Johnson, who plays in this bold, lusty style that's right out front in the mix – over cool exotic rhythms that come through with more force than some of the other Baxter albums from the time! There's some nice vibes on the album, and plenty of percussion as well – and titles include "Congo Train", "Walkin Watusi", "Ostrich Hunt", "Balinese Bongos", and "Mombasa After Midnight". Fantastic stuff, and recorded with beautiful sound! LP, Vinyl record album
(Stereo rainbow label pressing. Cover has very light wear and a very small bit of splitting on the bottom seam – but overall, this is a great copy.)

George BensonBad Benson (bonus tracks) ... CD
CTI/Epic, 1974. Used ... $3.99
Pretty mellow stuff from George Benson, but with some nice moments! Don Sebesky handled the arrangements for this set of larger backings – but Benson's guitar is right out front, hitting some super-dope lines at the best moments, stretching out from the warm Fender Rhodes or horn heavy backings. Highlights include "No Sooner Said Than Done", which has some very weird processing on the guitar; "Full Compass", which has some nice hard drums; and "Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams", a mellow moody track. CD also features 3 bonus tracks – the previously unreleased "From Now On", and new mixes of "Serbian Blue" and "Take The A Train". CD

George BensonWhite Rabbit ... LP
CTI, 1971. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $11.99
One of the moodiest sessions on CTI from the early days – and a landmark album that took George Benson from the funky jazz scene into the upper reaches of 70s jazz. The record was put together by Don Sebesky, and it's a lot more high concept than some of George's earlier work – and proof that he was a totally great player who just needed a push in the right direction to find his own vibe. Other players include Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, and Airto – and titles include "California Dreaming", "El Mar", "White Rabbit", and "Little Train". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mid 70s pressing, CTI 6015, with Van Gelder stamp. NOTE – Cover has some light staining and waviness along the opening side and upper corner, but the rest is fine.)

Graham Bond & Pete BrownTwo Heads Are Better Than One ... LP
Chapter One/Vinilisssimo (Spain), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 19.99
A ramshackle batch of early 70s post psychedelic rock from Pete Brown & Graham Bond – with an indelible groove thanks to the healthy portions of bluesy and soulful influences – on a wild batch of songs! You might actually expect an even trippier ride given some of the outlandish song times, Cream and Jack Bruce lyricist Brown does fly the flag for post hippie freakiness, but the underlying groove and rhythms and sweeter female vocal accompaniment hold it together – with some trumpet, sax, electric keys and percussion bringing a deeper dimension than other stuff in the leftfield British rock scene of the time. Titles include "Lost Tribe", "Ig The Pig", "Oobati", "Amazing Grass", "Scunthorpe Crabmeat", "Train Sideways Boogie Shuffle Stomp", "Colonel Frights' Dancing Terrapins", "Mass Debate" and "Looking For Time". A strong live set from 1980, recorded in Tokyo, and better than most of James' studio recordings from the time! The group is super-tight, super-fast, and the whole set has that train running out of control sort of feel that James first cut on wax with his live sets starting at the Apollo Theater. Includes versions of "It's Too Funky In Here", "Get Up Offa That Thing", "Sex Machine", "Body Heat", "I Got The Feelin", "Jam", "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag", "Gonna Have A Funky Good Time", "Try Me", and "Get On The Good Foot". Polydor, 1962. New Copy ... $5.99 14.99
A landmark album that forever changed the face of live recordings! As has been told and retold often, King records not only had the genius idea of bringing recording equipment into the Apollo Theater to catch James in a smoking live setting – but they also went out of their way to record and re-record the audience, creating a wonderful interplay on the record between James and the crowd. The result is the stuff of legend – and the record's filled with loads of nice tracks like "I'll Go Crazy", "Try Me", "I Don't Mind", "Lost Someone", "Think", The massive medley featuring "Please, Please, Please", "I Want You So Bad", "I Love You, Yes I Do", "Strange Things Happen", and "Night Train". Dave BrubeckJazz Goes To College ... CD
Columbia, 1954. Used ... $1.99
The Dave Brubeck Quartet goes to college – a pretty good place for the combo, considering how many fans they had on campus in the 50s! The sound here is never too academic for the setting, though – just the same sort of Brubeck groove first forged in the small clubs in San Francisco – played beautifully by an incarnation of the quartet that includes Paul Desmond on alto sax, Bob Bates on bass, and Joe Dodge on drums. The long, bluesy "Balcony Rock" is a real gem, with some standout work by Desmond that reminds us that he could be a great improvisor in an extended format – and other tracks include "Out Of Nowhere, "Le Souk", "The Song Is You", "Don't Worry Bout Me", and "Take The A Train". The title track, "Slow Freight", is an amazing 10 minute groover that moves at a very slow pace (just like a freight train), and which features some very cool ad-lib talking by Paul Serrano – a pretty groovy touch that really adds a lot to the track! Ray's piano is in the lead, with a sinister soulful groove – and he's backed by his patented two-trumpet rhythm sound, played here by Art Farmer and Snookie Young – blasting away with a tightly vamping approach that's really in the groove. Johnny BurnetteTear It Up – 17 Wild Rockabilly Classics ... LP
Coral/Solid Smoke, 1956/1957. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $14.99
Amazing work from a group who had an undeniable influence on the sound of guitar-based music for generations to come – from rockabilly to garage, psych, and punk – thanks to groundbreaking work from the Johnny Burnette Trio! The use of fuzz here is landmark – especially on the classic "Train Kept A Rollin" – the group's remake of a Tiny Bradshaw tune, refocused in energy that would later be picked up by The Yardbirds. The majority of the tracks were produced by the great Owen Bradley, who cemented his genius a little bit later manning the boards for Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn, but his production prowess is on fine display here – from primitive, howling hillbilly stormers, to sweeter stuff that hints at his later work with Patsy. This excellent collection features the best cuts by the early group, plus a few numbers never issued in the US! In beautiful mono, too. LP, Vinyl record album

DIW (Japan), 1994. Used ... $7.99
There's nothing prehistoric about this set – as saxophonist James Carter's working here in an angular mode that's strikingly modern, despite the "classics" in the title! The tunes are all familiar ones, but they're recast by Carter with a deep tone on tenor, alto, and soprano sax – one that recalls the freshness of Sonny Rollins during his most creative period, but which also is recorded here with a bit more looseness and sense of freedom. The group are all players from Carter's Detroit scene – Craig Taborn on piano, Jaribu Shahid on bass, and Tani Tabaal on drums – and titles include "Oleo", "Out Of Nowhere", "Take The A Train", "Ask Me Now", "Sandu", and "Equinox". The tunes definitely live up to the promise of the cover – and Johnny's look on the cover – with a mix of classic themes and biting commentary on the life of the working man, of the sort that made Cash a huge influence on generations to come. The Carter Family provide a bit of help at times – and titles include "Busted", "Another Man Done Gone", "Tell Him I'm Gone", "Waiting For A Train", "Roughneck", and "Chain Gang". Snapping grooves and a sweet clubby sound from Con Funk Shun – one of the best ensemble funk groups to make the transition from late 70s styles to the key years of 80s groove! A trio of early 80s efforts from Con Funk Shun in a 2CD set – with bonus tracks! Touch is a killer from the group – one of the few mainstream funk groups who actually managed to sound better and better with each new record – and on this set, they really seem to come into their own! Includes 2 bonus tracks: "Lady's Wild (12" Version)" and "Body Lovers (12" Version)". 7 is not the group's 7th album, but a bold statement of the unity they feel as a 7 piece ensemble – perfectly lived up to in the record's well-crafted grooves! The album's one of Con Funk Shun's best overall – really solid, but never too slick, very tight in the bass department, but still soulful on the vocal tip, and never afraid to slip into a sweeter, more mellow tune. Titles include "Straight From The Heart", "Bad Lady", "Promise You Love", "I'll Get You Back", "A Song For You", and "California 1". To The Mix has snapping grooves and a sweet clubby sound.
