✨✧ RampCome Into Knowledge ... LP
Blue Thumb/Verve, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums of all time – a masterpiece of moody soul, spacey vocals, and jazzy vibes – all produced by the legendary Roy Ayers! Ramp take their name from the anagram Roy Ayers Musical Productions – and in a way, the group's the summation of all the genius that Roy had been cooking up on his own albums of the 70s – served up at an even higher level than before! The group boasts a unique two-female vocal style – sung together in a mode that had been used on Roy's own albums, but never this fully – all supported by some complex jazzy instrumentation, very heavy on the vibes and keyboards! Nearly every cut is fantastic – and the album has a strange off-kilter vibe that's totally amazing, and which has captivated soul fans for years – a blend of mellow and upbeat, complicated and straightforward that's totally great. Titles include the massive cut "Daylight", sampled famously over the years, plus "American Promise", "Come Into Knowledge", "I Just Love You", and the band's great cover of "Everybody Loves the Sunshine", done in a way that's strangely both similar and different than Roy's own version! Cannonball AdderleyLove, Sex, And The Zodiac ... CD
Fantasy/BGP (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
A classic from Cannoball and producer-partner David Axelrod – truly great stuff and maybe even better than the Zodiac set Cannonball did for Capitol! The formula is similar to that one – with David Axelrod producing, electric keyboards by Hal Galper and George Duke, spacey solos by Cannonball and Nat Adderley, and some very hip recitations by Rick Holmes on love, sex, and the zodiac! Holmes is best known as the chappie who cut "Remember To Remember" years later with Roy Ayers – but this album's got a similar "wisdom and knowledge" feel that's pretty wonderful. Titles include "Aquarius: Humanity Plus", "Cancer: All Sides", "Leo: Rosebud", "Aries: Damn Right", "Gemini: Ecstasy", and "Virgo: For Pam". CD

Patricia BrennanMaquishti ... LP
Valley Of Search, 2021. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $25.99 29.99
Patricia Brennan is a vibist with experience in some farther reaches of avant expression – but here, she stakes her voice in a very beautiful way – with sounds that build slowly, take gentle shapes, and use both vibes and marimba at a level that has the songs opening up like patient musical flowers, awaiting the sun of the Patricia's inspiration! There's some of the spaciousness you might hear with 70s Gary Burton on ECM – but Brennan's music is even more open and thoughtful – never forcing the moment too much, and clearly working with a strong knowledge of her instruments, but not in a way that has to do anything to prove itself. Titles include "I Like For You To Be Still", "Blame It", "Sonnet", "Episodes", "Magic Square", "Away From Us", "Derrumbe De Turquesas", and three "Improvisation" tracks. LP, Vinyl record album

Gary ByrdPresenting The Gary Byrd Experience (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
RCA/Get On Down, 1972. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
A wicked lost album of righteous funk and poetic knowledge from the great Gary Byrd! Gary began his life as a soul DJ in New York, but by the early 70s, he was using his rich voice to create recordings designed to educate as much as entertain. That said, the album is as funky as it is strident, and innovatively soulful – it's got raw and heavy drums and horns the burst in, but there's also roomier, slinkier grooves created to frame Byrd's voice and mood. The arrangements are by Chico O'Farrill and he really delivers. Gary Byrd's storytelling and spoken delivery leads the way, though – righteousness without bitterness, angry yet agreeable – truly brilliant and unique work! Titles include "To You Beautiful Black Sister", "If The People Only Knew (Power To The People)", "Shining Black Prince", "Country Preacher", and "How Long My People" and more. This great 2011 CD edition from Get On Down includes the bonus "Soul Travelin' Pt I (The GBE)" and "Soul Travelin' Pt I (The GBE)". CD

Disco Patrick & Patrick VogtDisco – An Encyclopedic Guide To The Cover Art Of Disco Records (hardcover) ... Book
Soul Jazz (UK), 2014. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Way way way more than just another book of album cover images – and instead, a stunningly huge volume that offers up key images from the disco generation, plus a wealth of knowledge and information too! The book really lives up to the "encyclopedic" promise of its title – as it features label-by-label chapters on key companies during the disco years – from AVI to West End, with lots of great stops in between – all in chapters that feature images of most of the best albums on the labels, plus a listing of matrix numbers in order, which is a very useful tool! The album cover pages feature as many as 16 images on a large square page, complete with catalog numbers – which means that the book features thousands of images along with the numerical content – and a special section at the end features an even bigger array of 12" picture sleeves and label covers too. There's also as scrapbook of disco advertisements, and more label paperwork – plus sections on Roller Disco, Disco Instruction Records, Disco Samplers, and disco work on some of the major labels. The hardcover book is 384 pages, oversized, and super-heavy – a true treasure for any record collector! Book

Little Brown, 2018. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Gary Giddins' great second chapter in the career of Bing Crosby – handled with all the same detail and deep knowledge of the music as the first volume – and continuing this much-needed look at one of the most important figures in pop music during the 20th Century! Crosby helped forge the way forward for artists in so many genres to come – and the years of World War Two were a crucial part of this process – as Bing exploded with international stardom, representing hope and opportunity at a new musical level, while also acting as a cultural ambassador for the US too. The book is a very hefty 724 pages – as hefty as the first – and is hardcover, with a fair bit of images in sections in the middle. Book

Yusuke Hirado (Quasimode)Tower Of Touch ... CD
At Home Sound (Japan), 2020. Used ... $14.99
Fantastic Fender Rhodes from Yusuke Hirado – plus a fair bit of other keyboards too – all delivered in a set that mixes 70s space jazz funk with some great contemporary elements, and in a way that's nicely different than Hirado's work in the group Quasimode! The set's got some old school rhythms, but plenty more moments that soar and take off with very contemporary cosmic energy – very strongly in a jazz perspective overall, but with a strong knowledge of all the other musical changes that have taken place on the hipper scenes around the globe over the past 20 years – woven into classic keyboard sounds that take on a whole new shape in the setting! Titles include "The Kicker", "Early Bird", "Sonar", "Blue Sky", "Circle", "Galaxy Highway", and "Heady Dayz". CD

✨✧ Joe JacksonNight & Day ... LP
A&M, 1982. Very Good Gatefold ... $5.99
A heck of a great record – and we don't mind saying it! After knocking around in territory that ran from new wave to neo ska, retro swing, and other assorted genres, Joe Jackson really emerged with a strong voice on this 1982 classic. The album's a loving tribute to New York – and is steeped in Jackson's growing knowledge of Latin and jazz music – performed here by a great group that really sets things up right, and recorded in a warmly acoustic mode that was quite striking for the time! The tracks on the set hold up incredibly well over the years – getting past the cliches that later plagued Jackson's career, and reminding us of how great he was at his best. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jah LionColombia Colly (180 gram pressing – with bonus track) ... LP
Mango/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest mainstream 70s efforts from Lee Scratch Perry – a wonderful collaboration with Jah Lion – who serves up rhymes of knowledge and wisdom over some dubby genius from Scratch himself! The album skews towards the roots side of the spectrum, but has a looser, more open vibe too – as Jah Lion (aka Jah Lloyd) really lets his words space out amidst the fantastic production – really waiting his time for the rhythms to flow, then letting his vocals come in right on the money! The whole thing is great – virtually a blueprint for the entire On-U Sound label – with titles that include "Wisdom", "Dread In A Jamdong", "Flashing Whip", "Black Lion", "Fat Man", "Black Lion", "Little Sally Dater", "Hay Fever", and "Colombia Colly". Mango/Universal (Netherlands), 1984. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $41.99
A seminal set from Linton Kwesi Johnson – the kind of well-done early 80s set that had the UK scene showing the Jamaican one how to take some of its best elements and move forward – as the words and knowledge of Linton come into play with heady backings from Dennis Bovell and The Dub Band! Production is relatively straightforward – handled by the pair together, and using the best bassy elements of Bovell's music, while not getting in the way of the messages in Johnson's words – which are many, and very smartly focused at key targets of the time! Titles include "Making History", "Di Great Insohreckshan", "Wat About Di Workin Class","Reggae Fi Radni", "Reggae Fi Dada", "New Craas Massahkah", and "Di Eagle An Di Bear". King Sun dropped knowledge from a Five Percenter influence with a flow that's as smooth, solid and authoritive as any Bronx rapper of the day – and the production by Sun Born sounds great to this this day. This one was out of print for far too long! Includes "Hey Love", which uses the "Moments In Love" sample by Art Of Noise, and is standout produced by Cut Master DC. Also includes "Lethal Weapon", 'Ft Tape", "It's A Heat Up" and "Time To Go". Douglas/Ryko, 1970. Used ... $11.99
A wild one from the heady days of Leary's greatness – and a really odd record that's made even more mysterious by the lack of liner notes! Side one features an extended jamming guitar track – "Live & Let Live" – often funky in parts, and with Leary speaking from time to time, in a mode that fades down the music while the knowledge is delivered, then goes back to jamming. Side two features two similar tracks – "You Can Be Anyone This Time Around" and "What Do You Turn On When You Turn On" – again with trippy jamming music in the background, and Tim laying down some almost-spooky spoken bits over the top! MadamSensuous Black Woman ... LP
Kent, 1972. Very Good+ ... $19.99
One of two albums produced by Rudy Ray Moore – the other being The Sensuous Black Man – which define the art of making love from a gender-based perspective. Like Rudy's Sensuous Black Man, The Madam's version features one side of "instructional" dialogue – very XXX-rated, in bitchy mode that verbally orders a man to make love to a woman properly. Side two features "Rap Session", kind of a Q&A session in which The Madam lays down a bit more knowledge about sex over some bluesy music. There's plenty of bits on here that have been sampled over the years – and the record was a big one in the early mixes of the Chicago house scene. LP, Vinyl record album

Alton MillerSouls Like Mine ... LP
R2/Music Institute Detroit, 2007. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $20.99
Maybe the greatest moment ever from Detroit underground figure Alton Miller – one of those records from the early part of this century that really marked a moment of new sounds and styles in soul music! The album's way more than just the sort of house that Miller was first known for – as there's a wider ear for songwriting – one that comes through as much in the jazzy work on keyboards as it does the lyrics from a shifting array of singers – including Lady Linn and Nonie. We love it when someone from the world of 12" singles can find the focus for a full length set like this – and titles include "Between The Middle", "Possibilities", "Souls Like Mine", "Knowledge Of The Pygmies", "Long Time Comin", "Find A Way", "Time Is On Our Side", "Beautiful Brown People", "After The Rain", and "Malakou". Palm UnitHommage A Jef Gilson ... LP
Super Sonic Jazz (Netherlands), 2018. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
A beautiful tribute to pianist Jef Gilson – one of the hippest French jazz talents of the 60s and 70s – put together by a combo who take their name from his legendary Palm Records label! The group here are a quartet, and they work with wonderfully moody use of Hohner electric piano by Fred Escoffier, plus a bit of Farfisa and Hammond – of which are used spaciously, over rhythms that often move a lot more fiercely – with a third element created from the soulful tenor work of Lionel Martin – a saxophonist who really gets the spirit of the older Palm Records releases right! Actually, the whole group gets the spirit right – working here with a knowledge of the freer corners of jazz, but never going to that space – and instead hanging back in this spiritual blend of global currents, but all with a sensibility that's really unique. The mixture of tenor and harder electric piano lines is already great enough – but the loose rhythms at the core are what really send things home – on titles that include the Jef Gilson compositions "Mother Africa", "Chant Inca", "Chakan", "Mode De Fa", "Newport Bounce", and "Ouverture Jazz Pour San Remo" – plus a version of "The Creator Has A Master Plan". Gil Scott-HeronFree Will (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... $22.99 26.99
A really tremendous album from the legendary Gil Scott-Heron – and a set that stands as one of his greatest statements from the 70s! The record is a wonderful example of Gil's work in two different styles – sweet mellow jazzy soul, and harder heavier protest poetry – the latter from his roots as a writer in touch with the streets, and the former part of a brilliant new direction that he was taking on the Flying Dutchman label. Side one features classic jazzy tracks recorded with Brian Jackson – like "Free Will", "The Middle Of Your Days", "Speed Kills", and "Did You Hear What They Said?". Side two moves over to a much sparer sound – and has Gil reciting some of his poetry with very heavy percussion, and a very righteous approach. The wisdom and knowledge of those pieces is a perfect example of the kinds of issues that were haunting black America in the early 70s – especially on the tracks "No Knock", "The King Alfred Plan", and "Sex Education: Ghetto Style". Quite possibly the greatest moment ever from the team of Nikki Sudden and Dave Kusworth – a pair who were unlike anything else at the time, and who stand out here with an effort that's easily one of our favorite rock and roll albums of all time! Their look on the cover might make you think of 80s haircuts, but the sound here is that of the best raw underground of the decade before – echoes of rootsy elements mixed with guitar that has a great knowledge of trippy inflections, yet never indulges them all that much – recorded with raw energy that belies Sudden's sonic sensibilities from the late 70s punk years – but set to songs that are amazing classics that should have set the world on fire – if the world was ready to hear these guys when the album was released. The whole thing's wonderful – a record that would gladly make us give away our copy of Exile On Main Street – and titles include the sublime second version of "Big Store", plus "Ambulance Station", "Fortune Of Fame", "Hearts Are Like Flowers", "Son Of A French Nobleman", and "It'll All End Up In Tears". Tower Of PowerYou Ought To Be Havin Fun – The Columbia/Epic Anthology ... CD
Columbia/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 70s/Mid 90s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 24.99
Two slices of work from Tower Of Power – both recorded for Sony/CBS, but with over a decade between them! First up, the set presents 19 killer cuts from the Columbia Records years of Tower Of Power – a time when the group moved away from Warner Brothers, where they were maybe losing a little steam – and forged this fantastic sense of soul that was missing from some of their earlier records! At the start, TOP were a rock-solid funk act – but here, they also bring a stronger soul approach to their vocals and songwriting – in a way that mixes their always-sharp instrumentation with a deeper, more developed vibe – super-strong material that sometimes doesn't always get its due. The set brings together Columbia tracks from albums, singles, and even some b-sides – with tracks that include "You Ought To Be Havin Fun", "Am I A Fool", "Lovin You Is Gonna See Me Thru", "Ain't Nothin Stoppin Us Now", "Because I Think The World Of You", "We Came To Play", "Love Bug", "While We Went To The Moon", "Somewhere Down The Road", "Deal With It", "By Your Side", and "Heaven Must Have Made You". The second half of the package features tunes the group recorded for Epic Records during the mid 90s – material that was only issued on CD at the time, and which shows TOP to continue the strengths of their earlier years! Some of the cuts go for a retro funk approach, others have a more contemporary soul vibe – and the set features 16 Epic tracks that include "A Little Knowledge", "Recapture The Magic", "Soul With A Capital S", "Please Come Back To Stay", "You", "Rhythm & Business", "Come To A Decision", "Undercurrent", "Diggin On James Brown", and "How Could This Happen To Me". Beat (Italy), 1980. New Copy ... $19.99 28.98
An early 80s soundtrack from the great Piero Umiliani – but one that seems to echo some styles from deeper in his past, including some of of the jazz elements he used in his early days – and some of the more unusual sonic textures he created for his sound library projects in the 70s! The film's a comedy, but as usual with Umiliani, the music is way more than you might expect – sometimes light and melodic, other times served up with unusual sonic elements – maybe more in the warmer side of the spectrum than the cold, but always with a knowledge of darkness at all the right points. The main theme gets some strong renditions in a few different ways – and there's also a great instrumental titled "Ultimissime", which has great Fender Rhodes – and the killer "Samba Mah Na", which uses Brazilian percussion and brassy horns to rework Umiliani's classic "Mah Na Mah Na" theme! A few tracks even get a bit funky – and the CD features 20 tracks from the film, plus notes in Italian and English. CD

Young Turks, 2017. New Copy ... $16.99 17.98
Pure fantasticness from the great Kamasi Washington – a set that's much more compact than his sprawling Epic, but which has an equally wonderful vibe overall! The album features material that Washington performed at the Whitney Biennial – to accompany paintings by his sister – but the whole thing stands alone beautifully, with that free-flowing, always spiritual vibe that's made Washington one of the strongest young jazz talents to emerge in recent years! The music resonates strongly with the work of some of his key LA contemporaries – like Ronald Bruner Jr, Miles Mosley, Cameron Graves, and Thundercat – all of whom perform in the large ensemble – helping Kamasi's tenor soar to the skies on waves of collaborative joy. Washington composed, arranged, and even produced the record himself – and in some ways, the tightness of the performance makes the whole thing even more satisfying than Epic – as we hope you feel too, on titles that include "Desire", "Humility", "Truth", "Integrity", "Knowledge", and "Perspective". ✨✧ Ben WatsonDerek Bailey & The Story Of Free Improvisation ... Book
Verso, 2013. New Copy ... $6.99 26.95
An incredibly deep book on the life and music of Derek Bailey – the British guitarist who really helped push the sound of free improvisation forward in the 60s and 70s, then continued with a legacy of creative music for decades more! Ben Watson knocks it out of the park with this one – as the volume features countless hours of interview material with Bailey, and many of his contemporaries – woven into an extremely thoughtful history that spends a great deal of time looking at Derek's role in British mainstream music of the 50s and early 60s, where he had a great career in dance bands – then his completely surprising decision to step outside and work in a completely different way! Watson has a clear knowledge of Bailey's genius, and a deep understanding of his music – and almost sets a new standard for jazz biography with his work in this volume. The book even has some great appendix chapters – including a Derek Bailey discography, a discography of his Incus Records label, and even all of the Invisible Jukebox sessions that Bailey did for the British press over the years. 459 pages, softcover, with some black and white images. Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Great groovy pop from the Italian scene of the 60s – a wealth of rare singles from female singers, almost all of whom we've never heard before! We'll confess to a long love and deep knowledge of female French singers from the time – but also admit a strong ignorance about most Italian pop, which always seems a bit harder to find – especially collected together in sets like this for the English-speaking world. And while we totally love the French sets from Ace Records, we almost dig this one even more – as the whole thing's so fresh, so groovy that each new tune is a real delight – as bold orchestrations mix with mod rhythms, rockish instrumentation, and some totally cool Italian lyrics sung by a batch of female singers who've definitely got us already digging for more. The magic sunshine here is all from the legendary catalog of MPS Records – unusually groovy jazz tracks from the 60s and 70s, all hand-picked by the equally legendary DJ Gilles Peterson! Peterson first turned many ears onto MPS back a few decades ago – with his excellent Talkin Jazz series – and this set follows strongly in that legacy, but also really shows both the deeper knowledge of the label's catalog we've acquired over the years, and the further development of Gilles' incredible ear for finding an unusual tune! The music here isn't just funky jazz, it's a huge range of sounds at once – some modal and spiritual elements, some global jazz experiments, a few vocal tracks, and even some very cool space-age styles – served up in a package that seems to make each new track burst forward with fresh feeling in the company of the others – that rare quality that can make a compilation like this so great. A fantastic look at the righteous current of energy that swept through American music at the end of the 60s – that huge wave of knowledge and political inspiration that still stands as one of our favorite moments in jazz and soul! The Civil Rights generation had gotten some things accomplished, but not everything – and a new wave of action arose in various scenes of the underground – not just pushing the musical formats past anything that had happened before, but also doing so with a strong message of pride and empowerment! This collection surveys some of the best tracks of that moment – and also provides a great batch of historical notes to put the whole thing in context – done in collaboration with the book of the same name, but equally great as a soundtrack and document on its own. Great Hammond work from Brian Charette – served up in a style that's a bit different than most contemporary organ jazz sessions! The tracks here are sometimes short – like the old soul jazz organ singles back in the 60s – and Charette mixes things up nicely with a few great covers of soundtrack and pop moments – a bit like some Jimmy McGriff album on Sue Records! Yet Charette's also got a much wider range of sounds than McGriff ever did – a knowledge of the Hammond that embraces all the changes from Larry Young forward – worked out with a sweet trio that includes either Avi Rothbard or Yotam Silberstein on guitar, and Mark Ferber or Jordan Young on drums. Joe Sucato guests on tenor on the album's one long track – and titles include "The Kicker", "Good Tipper", "Another Quarter", "Standing Still", "You Only Live Twice", "Up Up & Away", and "Time Of The Season". Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Lovely lyrical sounds from Tommy Flanagan – a pianist who can be as deft as a bopper, but also bring in some richer currents of soul as well! Case in point is this great album from the late 70s – a time when Flanagan wasn't as much in the recording spotlight as the decade before, but a period when he'd actually matured a lot more as a player – able to step effortlessly between both his inclinations, especially when working with a group this great – a trio that features George Mraz on bass and Elvin Jones on drums! Tommy's got a touch on the keys that's subtle at times, but extremely powerful – a knowledge of notes and colors that's never overstated, but always right on the money. Titles include a great reading of the Tom McIntosh tune "Cup Bearers", plus "Maybe September", "Confirmation", "50 21", and "It Never Entered My Mind". CD

The album's even headier and dubbier than its core inspiration – almost as if Fullwood's going back in the laboratory, and continuing some experiments with even wilder results the second time around! The knowledge and wisdom of the lyrics are lost a bit in the dub-heavy presentation, but are more than made up for by the very strong sound. A killer set from pianist Mike Longo – one of those albums that always make us think that the 70s may well be Longo's best decade on record! Mike plays all acoustic piano here, but with a style that also shows a strong knowledge of Fender Rhodes – an instrument he used a lot at the time – which means a great sense of space between some of the notes, and an inherent sense of warmth and soul in the way he puts down a groove. The group's got some extra congas from Patato Valdes, next to tight drums from Mickey Roker – and Ron Carter plays both acoustic and electric bass, Sam Jones acoustic bass, and Al Gafa plays guitar. The title track, "Matrix", is a nice groover, and other nice ones include "My San Francisco" and "Travel On" – alongside the cuts "Let Me Out", "Night Rider", and "Soliloquy". LP, Vinyl record album

A legendary album of spoken word and spiritual jazz – put together by The Institute of Positive Education in Chicago, and featuring wisdom and knowledge from the legendary Haki R Madhubuti! The album alternates shorter vocal/musical tracks with longer ones that are pure post-Coltrane jazz – played by a group that includes Wallace Roney on trumpet, Byron Harrison on guitar, and Rufus Wright on piano – all working with saxophonist Agyei Akoto, who's also the music director of the set. There's an incredibly positive feel to the set – one that tackles the issues of the time, but which does so with a sense of optimism that's extremely rare today – and which is part of the real charm of the album. All three players were really reinventing the sound of jazz on the Japanese scene of the 70s – and all musicians have strong knowledge of modern elements, but also have no trouble expressing themselves in warmer, more lyrical ways as well – which makes for a depth of emotion that really shows the Three Blind Mice label at its best. The overall vibe is hard to peg – the album's got that very special mix of music and knowledge that you'd get on Chicago gems like the work of Paris Smith or Haki R Madhubuti, or the Black Fairy album – with sounds that encompass jazz, funk, soul, and gospel – but come out with a result that's completely unique and individual! There's a small group on the set – using strong organ, flute, trumpet, and tenor over percussion – and the singers shift between a cool female group called The Intimates Of Soul, other soloists, and leader EJ Garrison, who handled arrangements and production. A group with a sound that you'll never be able to pronounce – but with a sound that's instantly accessible, and which goes right to the heart of the matter in a great mix of funky fusion and more rock-styled touches! The lineup is pretty straightforward – keyboards, guitar, bass, and drums – but these guys have a great way of really coming up with unusual grooves and unusual phrasings – moments that clearly have a knowledge of freer jazz, but never go that far out – and performances from musicians who clearly know the world of prog, but also keep things tighter and groovier too! In a way, the feel of the record isn't too far from the early 70s Placebo albums with Marc Moulin – but maybe less keyboard-centric than those sets, and with tight rhythmic elements that also echo some of the funky fusion of the PM Records label. Smoking Motown work from Thelma Houston – a great 70s set that catches the singer at the top of her groove! The album's polished, but never in a too-commercial way – and the grooves acknowledge the growing role of the dancefloor in mainstream soul, yet also mostly stay away from some of the disco cliches of the time – thanks to sophisticated work by arrangers Art Wright, Paul Riser, and Michael Smith! Although we should also point out that this is the record that gave Houston one of her bigger hits – the key crossover track "Don't Leave Me This Way" – nestled nicely amidst other great numbers like "Don't Know Why I Love You", "Any Way You Like It", "If It's The Last Thing I Do", and "Don't Make Me Pay". In the eyes of the authors – and our eyes too – all of these records are under-acknowledged gems – some by big names, others by more obscure artists – lots of which never got their full due at the time. The book is filled with some of our favorite records of all time – which is a big hats off to the long list of contributors, who include Miriam Linna, Steve Shelly, Peter Holsapple, Russ Titelman, Marshall Crenshaw, Bob Irwin, Lenny Kaye, and many others – who've come up with a set of essays on titles that include The Living Legend by Baby Huey, Gene Clark & The Gosdin Brothers, Continued by Tony Joe White, Delta Sweete by Bobby Gentry, Entertainment by Family, Desertshore by Nico, Young Mod's Forgotten Story by The Impressions, Roots by The Everly Brothers, Rock Bottom by Robert Wyatt, and lots lots more! The book is filled with records that we love, and that we'd now call classic – served up in a hefty softcover edition that's almost 400 pages in length, with black and white images throughout. Book

Johnny RichardsSomething Else By Johnny Richards ... LP
Bethlehem, 1956. Very Good- ... $2.99
Some of the best work ever from one of the most under-acknowledged jazz composers and arrangers of the 50s! Johnny Richards is probably best known for his recordings with Stan Kenton in the early part of the decade – but when he moved out on his own, he developed a tremendous sound that was even richer, even more full of color and tone than Kenton's own – and which was often done without any arch-modern tones, yet still fresh and free of cliche. The album's one of Richards' first as a leader – and features a wonderful lineup filled with top-shelf players – including Charlie Mariano on alto, Richie Kamuca on tenor, Stu Williamson and Pete Candoli on trumpets, and Frank Rosolino and Milt Bernhardt on trombones – all players who really bring a bold sort of energy to Johnny's vibrant arrangements. The sax work alone is tremendous – cutting with a beautiful edge across the larger charts – and titles include "Waltz Anyone", "Turn Aboot", "Band Aide", "Dimples", and "Burrito Borracho". LP, Vinyl record album
(Heavy mono red label pressing with deep groove. Cover has center splits in the spine and bottom seam, some wear and aging, and bumped corners.)

VariousSpiritual Jazz Vol 12 – Esoteric, Modal, & Progressive Jazz From Impulse Records 1962 to 1975 (3LP set) ... LP
Impulse/Jazzman (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $34.99 41.98
An essential look at the spiritual jazz legacy of Impulse Records – a set that's maybe a bit overdue in this series, given that Impulse first opened the door to these modes with their recordings of John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders in the 60s! For some reason, Impulse had a perfect ear for this music – able to let players stretch out and be free, but also work some of the earlier modal jazz impulses into longer-form tunes that still had a pulse of rhythm – and which were often a bit different than the freer jazz styles on a label like ESP. Make no mistake, there's plenty of improvisation going on here – but it's also part of the larger, unified spirit of the tunes – a real message in the music, on selections that include "Sister Mamie" by Yusef Lateef, "Three Flowers" by McCoy Tyner, "7th Day" by Freddie Hubbard, "Half & Half" by Elvin Jones, "Groove Waltz" by McCoy Tyner, "The Blessing Song" by Michael White, "Turiya & Ramakrishna" by Alice Coltrane, "A Taste Of Honey" by Phil Woods, "Constant Trob (part 1)" by John Klemmer, "Hum Allah Hum Allah Hum Allah" by Pharoah Sanders, "Maimoun" by Marion Brown, "Lonesome Lover" by Max Roach, "Fantszm" by Elvin Jones, "Acknowledgement" by John Coltrane, "Thembi" by Pharoah Sanders, and "Journey In Satchidananda" by Alice Coltrane. And let us say that even if you have some of these tracks on other records, there's something completely sublime about the way the whole thing is put together – and the way the tracks sound next to each other! ✨✧ John ColtraneLove Supreme (SACD pressing) ... CD
Impulse/Universal, 1964. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Maybe one of the greatest jazz albums of all time – a real breakthrough moment for the legendary John Coltrane, and the blueprint for generations of jazz records to come! Trane was already breaking down plenty of boundaries before Love Supreme – but he knocked it out of the park for the album – which is a full-length suite of spiritual expression, one that gives even greater focus and message to Coltrane's long-spiralling style of soloing on the tenor sax! The group here is the classic quartet – McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums – taking Trane up to the heavens on waves of modal energy, but also holding his spirit closer to the planet than on some of later, more outside performances. There's a slight bit of vocalization on the record – that chanted energy that imbues the set with so much love – and movements include "Acknowledgement", "Resolution", "Pursuance", and "Psalm". CD
(SACD only pressing – will not play on standard CD players.)

✨✧ Lakecia BenjaminPursuance – The Coltranes ... CD
Ropeadope, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The music of the Coltranes – both John and Alice – taken into wonderful directions by saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin – a younger player who clearly feels the influence of the Great One in a very deep way, but isn't about to just offer up a straight copy of the family spiritual legacy! Part of the difference lies in the fact that Lakecia plays alto, not tenor or soprano – but there's also this energy here that's really fresh, too – maybe a more compact take on the ideas of the songs, but also strongly collaborative too – as the record features contributions from so many other great artists – Gary Bartz and Steve Wilson on alto, Meshell Ndegeocello and Reggie Workman on bass, Marc Cary on piano, Brandee Younger on harp, and Georgia Anne Muldrow and Dee Dee Bridgewater on vocals. The lineup changes nicely throughout the album, and there's many flavors of reflection in this Coltrane rainbow – on titles that include "Turiya & Ramakrishna", "Om Shanti", "Alabama", "Acknowledgement", "Liberia", "Central Park West", "Sprial", "Syeeda's Song Flute", and "Pursuance". ✨✧ Bo DiddleyBlack Gladiator ... LP
Checker, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A wicked reinvention of the sound of Bo Diddley – a set that electrifies his groove even more than before – and takes him into the same mix of funk and blues that Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf were exploring at the time! This album's right up there with the two Cadet/Chess classics by both of those artists – and is possibly even more messed-up too – with lots of jagged edges that push past the usual Bo Diddley groove – even though that classic sense of rhythm is still at the core to drive things along! We don't know who's playing drums, but they've got a nice heavy handed approach that makes these tracks really boom – and the set's in a massively funky style that's taken far too many years to be acknowledged for in the mainstream! Lots of nice ones, including "Shut Up Woman", "Funky Fly", "Power House", "Black Soul", "Elephant Man", and "I've Got A Feeling". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ WilcoSummerteeth (4CD set) ... CD
Nonesuch, 1999. New Copy 4 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A sprawling deluxe version of a once semi-overlooked Wilco effort, finally being acknowledged as a major milestone for the band – as it was a huge shift from their alt country and folk rock roots towards unpredictable, though warmly approachable art rock! Still recognizable as the work of the passionate, rootsier rock band of the first couple albums, with more adventurous sounds and instrumentation – woozy keyboards, a growing knack for studio-built atmospherics – and a much more metaphorical lyrical bent. Titles include "Can't Stand It", "She's A Jar", "We're Just Friends", "Pieholden Suite", "Candyfloss", "A Shot In The Arm" and more. 4CD box set version includes the remastered original album, a packed CD full of outtakes, alternate versions and demos (24 tracks in all), an unreleased double CD live set recorded at the Boulder Theater in Boulder Colorado on November 1, 1999, and an essay by Mojo Magazine's John Mulvey. CD

✨✧ VariousMainstream Soul Survey – Gonna Have A Good Time ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Heavy funk and soaring soul from the Mainstream Records family of the mid 70s – a rare batch of tracks that were only ever issued as singles by the label, and by the smaller Brown Dog and IX Chains imprints! Most of the cuts here are right from the middle of the 70s – and are a mix of small combo grooving and some fuller, Philly-styled backings – all in support of a range of great singers who often bring some deeper soul vocals into the mix. Most of the cuts here have never been reissued before, and the package is a whopping 17 track look at this under-acknowledged side of the Mainstream Records story – with rare tracks that include "Let The People Talk" by Steptones, "Seven Day Lover" by Raymond Smith, "Be Here In The Morning" by 2nd Verse, "I'm Gonna Get You" by Frankie Floyd, "Let The Music Play" by JG Lewis, "Gonna Have A Good Time" by Crystal Image, "You Are The Spice Of My Life" by Nia Johnson, "Wind Up Toy" by Zebra, "These Memories" by Almeta Lattimore, "Super Guy Flying High" by The Last Crusade, "Get Down Get Down" by South Side Coalition, "You've Got A Lot To Give" by Chocolate Syrup, "You're A Friend Of Mine" by Words Of Wisdom, and "If You Wanna Party" by Spectrum. ✨✧ Curtis AmyKatanga (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Pacific Jazz/Blue Note, 1963. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
A stellar set from one of the most underrated reed players of all time – a brilliant bit of searching soul jazz, cut at a time when Curtis Amy was leaving behind his Texas roots for the new sounds of the Coltrane generation! The album's quite different than the organ and tenor dates that Amy had previously cut with Paul Bryant – and instead, is put together with a nascent spiritualism that's really wonderful – a sound that definitely lives up to the bold title and cover image, with lots of modal moments in the rhythms! The group features some equally under-acknowledged geniuses – including trumpeter Dupree Bolton, pianist Jack Wilson, and guitarist Ray Crawford – all coming together perfectly with Amy's work on tenor and soprano sax. The best tunes here are originals by the group members – including "Lonely Woman" (not by Ornette), "Katanga", "Native Land", and "Amyable". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ennio MorriconeBurglars (Le Casse) ... LP
Bell, 1972. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Quite possibly our favorite Ennio Morricone soundtrack ever – THE record that first made our ears prick up many years ago, and acknowledge him as the genius he truly is! The very first note of the record grabs you immediately – a heartbeat-like rhythm, pounding out very slowly before giving way to an off-tuned piano that steps and staggers into the groove. Other tracks follow in a majestic blend of strings, space, weird woodwinds, and even a few funky bits – all cast with a perfect blend of dark and sweet throughout! The sound is amazing – mindblowing at every twist and turn – and the range of themes here is a bit wider than other Morricone soundtracks from the period – making for even more excitement! Tracks include "The Burglars", "Love Theme", "Dangerous Curves", and "Erotico". LP, Vinyl record album
