D'AngeloVoodoo ... CD
Virgin, 2000. Used ... $5.99
Sweet and gritty soul from D'Angelo – who takes a huge step into deeper territory on Voodoo – and it's one of the most monumental records of its time! On one level, Voodoo works as a nicely stripped-down session with a very classic soul feel. Gone are the overzealous flourishes that sometimes overwhelmed his earlier songs, and in their place are some sweetly crafted vocal parts with a classic Marvin Gaye/Al Green feel. That warmth is probably what made Voodoo a massive popular success – but what makes it such a creative triumph are the darker undercurrents – hinting at a troubled soul struggling for spiritual truth. One of the rare cases in popular music when great art became music for the masses! Titles include "Left & Right (feat Method Man & Redman)", "The Line", "Spanish Joint", "Africa", "Feel Like Makin Love", "The Root", "Playa Playa", "Devil's Pie", and "Greatdayndamornin/Booty". CD

Angelo Francesco LavagninoKali Yug – La Dea Della Vendetta/Il Mistero Del Tempo Indiano ... CD
CAM/Quartet (Spain), 1963. New Copy 2CD ... $28.99 39.99
A pair of rare 60s soundtracks from Italian maestro Angelo Francesco Lavagnino – both of which work together well in a single package! First up is Kali Yug – one of the coolest, most exotic soundtracks we've ever heard from Angelo Francesco Lavagnino – and that's saying a lot, given that he also did work for crime, western, and sci fi movies too! The music has a feel that nicely fits the cover – almost exotica at times, but with more touches of jazz and soundtrack elements too – although some numbers use very cool percussion and woodwinds, with a feel that's almost ethnographic in spots! The careful blend almost rivals Les Baxter at his Capitol Records best – and titles include "Il Raja", "Idillio Di Amrita", "Le Carovane", "Rapsodia Indiana", "Giostra Bengalese", and "Notturno In Giardino". This CD version features a whopping 29 tracks in all – lots of bonus material added to the original record. Next is Il Mistero Del Tempio Indiano – a soundtrack with a nice mix of exotic themes and more dynamic and dramatic passages – a vibe that's very similar to some of the best "blood and sandals" material from the Italian scene of the late 50s and early 60s! Most of the instrumentation is conventional, but used in unusual tones and phrasing – and mixed with some nice percussion touches at times – all in a blend of modes that provides a nice sense of diversity through the 19 tracks included in the package. Beat (Italy), 1968/1970. Used ... $13.99
A double-pack of Italian spaghetti western soundtracks – both from the end of the 60s! Gli Specialisti is a nice batch of tracks from Angelo Lavagnino – one that features a few really great lighter themes that echo out with some beautifully watery touches – matched by some other more driving, dramatic numbers, and a few more that have some slight period touches in the instrumentation. 15 Force Per Un Assassino is a more traditional western soundtrack – with driving rhythms, bold horns, and an overall theme that matches the styles set up by American westerns in earlier years. The CD features 11 tracks from each film – 22 titles in all! CD

J DillaShining ... CD
BBE (UK), 2006. New Copy ... $9.99 16.99
A glorious send off from J Dilla – with some of the most soulful productions Dilla's ever laid down – and appearances by Common, D'Angelo, Pharoahe Monch, Madlib, MED, Black Thought and others! It's impossible to listen to The Shining without considering the sad circumstances surrounding its release, and all too easy to over praise, but this record is filled timelessly inventive production – and passionate rhymes from the honored guests. A lot of the more leftfield, abstract touches that create most of the character on the Donuts LP are really on the outskirts of the sound here – a much richer, deeper, funky drum influenced batch of sounds. We're speechless. There's one more official posthumous LP in the can, and thank goodness for that. Tracks include in-your-f**kin' face intro "Geek Down" with Busta Rhymes, "E=MC2" feat Common, "Love Jones", "Love" feat Pharoahe Monch, "Baby" feat Madlib & Guilty Simpson, "So Far To Go" feat Common & D'Angelo (come back D', the world needs you), "Jungle Love" feat MED & Guilty Simpson, "Dime Piece (Remix)" feat Dwele, "Love Movin'" feat Black Thought and "Won't Do". Milton NascimentoMaria Maria ... LP
Far Out (UK), 1976. New Copy 2LP ... $28.99 30.99
Richly soulful work from Milton Nascimento – music created at the same time as his classic albums in the 70s – but as the soundtrack to a ballet, which makes for a nice change from the usual! The approach is similar to Milton's studio work, but maybe even a bit more heavenly too – a sophisticated, yet soulful blend of instrumentation and vocals – baroque yet touched with the straightforwardness of rock, and never overly complicated, despite the nature of the setting. The work is essential if you like any of Milton's mid 70s studio albums – and performers on the project include both Joao Donato and Wagner Tiso on keyboards, Nelson Angelo and Beto Guedes on guitar, Paulo Moura on saxes, and Helcio Milito on percussion – true Brazilian instrumental heavyweights, who more than keep up with the complexity and charm of the music. Nascimento is also in the lineup, and adds some of his vocals too – on titles that include "Maria Maria", "Lilia", "A Chamada", "Pai Grande", "Seducao", "Francisco", "Boca A Boca", "De Repente Maria Sumiu", and "Francisco". Motown, 1978. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A great Motown set from the 70s – a record that grooves with the new styles the label was exploring at the time, yet still has a rock-solid quality that links back to its 60s heritage too! The main strength here comes from Bonnie Pointer – whose vocals have an instantly classic sound that really fits the grooves – but the record also has killer help from top to bottom, too – including production from Berry Gordy and Jefrey Bowen, songs penned by Bowen, Smokey Robinson, Angelo Bond, Lamont Dozier, and Truman Thomas, and top-shelf help from California Motown studio giants. Titles include "When I'm Gone", "Free Me From My Freedom/Tie Me To A Tree", "Heaven Must Have Sent You", "Ah Shoot", "I Wanna Make It", and "My Everything". LP, Vinyl record album

The set was recorded in Rio, and Danilo Caymmi and Milton Nascimento provide a bit of guest vocals – and tracks include "The Face I Love", "Courage", "The Day It Rained", "Vera Cruz", and "If You Went Away". VariousNumero 95 (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Numero, Early 90s. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
A real genre-setting compilation from the folks at Numero – a set that digs through a lost underground of early 90s computer-based music – work that's very different from both the early digital work of the 80s, and some of the spacier sounds of the new age generation! There's definitely elements of both at play here, but there's also moments of more sound library focus, mixed with a feel of cold wave artists growing up and getting slightly more sentimental – a very unique strand that the folks at the label have dug up on their own, as part of their wonderful "cabinet of curiosities" series. The package is great – like you're getting a 12" floppy disc – and titles include "Rain Dance" by Steve Bach, "Sex Drive" by Slap & Powell, "Sketches Of Anderland" by Angelo Vanotti, "In My Heart" by Jessie Allen Cooper, "Walking The Lonely Streets" by Andrew Gordon, "Hovercraft" by Barry Coates, and "Listen To The Music" by Quiet Force. MCA, 2002. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $59.99
A really great compilation put out by the folks at Red Hot – an organization dedicated to "Fighting Aids Through Popular Culture". Previous sets by the group have focussed on jazz, bossa, and other music – and this time around, the focus is Africa, currently suffering from a rampant AIDS epidemic. As a response to the problem, Red Hot have brought together a host of different artists in a set of new Afro Funk tracks that would do Fela proud! In fact, over and above the politics, the set's actually one of the best new Afro Funk projects we've ever heard – with a list of artists that includes Archie Shepp, Lateef, Gift Of Gab, Talib Kweli, Jorge Ben, D'Angelo, Femi Kuti, Macy Gray, Meshell Ndegeocello, Cheikh Lo, Tony Allen, Positive Black Soul, Kelis, and others – all coming together in a really wonderful set of tracks that crackle with excitement! Unfortunately, one of Aids most famous African victims includes Afro Funk pioneer Fela. As a loving tribute, the set's made up of new versions of Fela tunes – with titles that include "No Agreement", "So Be It", "Gentleman", "Shakara/Lady", "Water No Get Enemy", "Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake", "Colonial Mentality", and "Shuffering & Smiling". A soaring set from Leon Bridges – a full length second album that's every bit as classic as his debut, but in a completely different way! Where Coming Home was maybe Leon's answer to the generation of Marvin Gaye and Sam Cooke, Good Thing is more of a nod to the era of Maxwell and D'Angelo – but, as before, coming across with a vibe that's completely Bridges' own – this ebullient, bubblingly soulful quality that's completely sublime – and which has Leon's voice fitting perfectly with the mellow grooving beats, keyboards, and guitar. The singer's voice is maybe even better than before – sure to win over an even new wave of ears – and titles include "If It Feels Good Then It Must Be", "Bet Ain't Worth The Hand", "Bad Bad News", "Shy", "Beyond", "Forgive You", "Lions", "You Don't Know", and "Georgia To Texas". Titles include his great remake of the Prince classic "When Doves Cry" – plus "Pony", "Holler", "Tell Me Do You Wanna", "Only When Ur Lonely", "Ginuwine 4 Ur Mind", "G Thang", and "I'll Do Anything/I'm Sorry". The smashing debut of Van Hunt – a smoky-voiced singer with a really great sound! The album's one of those "instant classics" that grabs us right away – put together with a sweet and seductive feel that's got roots that stretch back past D'Angelo into the 70s work of Al Green – and which has some really great touches on the instrumentation and production, giving the set a nicely trippy feel! Think of this one as neo-psychedelic soul – and get ready to be hearing a lot more from Van Hunt in years to come – because with a sound like this, the guy's gonna break out big! There's loads of compelling little tunes on the set, and titles include "Highlights", "Dust", "Seconds Of Pleasure", "Hello Goodbye", "Down Here In Hell (With You)", "Out Of The Sky", "Hold My Hand", and "Her December". ✨✧ Sergio Mendes & Brasil '88Sergio Mendes & Brasil '88 ... CD
BMG (Brazil), 1978. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The title says "88", but the album's from 1978 – and it's one of Sergio's great sets from the 70s that mixes older Brazilian roots with sweeter American soul! The sound is really wonderful – almost more LA than Rio, but still with plenty of Brazilian elements filtered into the mix – not just in the choice of tunes, which is great, but in the freer, looser jazz styles employed with the vocals. Sergio plays some especially wonderful keyboards on the album – further enforcing a sense of jazzy warmth – and vocals are mostly by the team of Carol Rogers and Marietta Waters, singing together in that twin-female approach that Mendes used often over the years, but also with Waters stepping out solo a bit too. Musicians include both American jazz talents like Bud Shank and Frank Rosolino – plus Brazilian artists who include Nana Vasconcelos and Nelson Angelo. Titles include a great version of "Waters of March (aka Agua De Marco)" – done at a fast clip, with English lyrics, and a very nice groove that makes the cut a real dancefloor groover – and other tracks include "Bridges", "Misturada", "That's Enough For Me", "One More Lie", "Life Goes On", and "Tiro Cruzado". ✨✧ CommonLike Water For Chocolate ... CD
MCA, 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
A huge creative leap forward for Common! Com had been slowly moving from a Chicago street poet role into a more universally conscious hip hop soul from record to record to this point, but Like Water For Chocolate is the one that really catapulted him deep into that realm – especially given the excellent, mood setting production of Jay Dee/J Dilla and The Soulquarians. For a little while there, we missed the rawer Relativity era vibe, and we didn't fall as head over heels for Like Water For Chocolate as the world at large did, but in hindsight, maybe we just weren't ready for it – it's easily amongst the best hip hop albums of the period. Honest Jons (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The rebirth of the Afro-Cuban groove on the New York scene of the 70s – a dozen recordings in the "new traditionalist" sound of the time! After the boom of the Latin Soul sound of the late 60s, and the rise of salsa in the early 70s, there was also a "back to basics" movement within the players of the New York Latin community – a shift that stripped down the sound, reintroduced traditional instrumentation, and worked in rhythms that might have been used on older sessions, but which were slightly updated for the newer recordings. The work of that period, although strong, has often been overlooked in favor of some of the flashier sounds of the scene – and this set wonderfully corrects that fault by bringing together a great sampling of work from the traditional spectrum of the Salsoul and SAR record labels, along with the kind of notes and commitment to quality that makes the Honest Jon's reissues so great! Titles include "Son Sabroson" by Rey Roig, "Chuchillo Para La Pina Cubana" by Charlie Rodriguez, "Chocolate En C7" and "Trumpet En Montuno" by Chocolate, "Oriente" and "Tiene Sabor" by Henry Fiol, "Yo Perdi El Corazon" by Lita Branda, "Camina Y Ven Pa La Loma" by Roberto Torres, "Celosa" by Angelo Y Su Conjunto Modelo, and "Los Dos Hermanos" by Los Jimaguas. ✨✧ Lo BorgesLo Borges (1972) (180 gram pressing) ... LP
EMI/Polysom (Brazil), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An incredible album from Lo Borges – one of the best singer/songwriters on the Brazilian scene of the 70s! Borges first burst into the spotlight for his work on the Club Da Esquina album by Milton Nascimento – and his work as part of Milton's "corner club" really helped shape the style of the more famous singer. Yet Borges is almost an equally great talent on his own – with a soaring, soulful approach that's every bit as great as the best Nascimento material from the period – and recorded in a wonderfully similar spirit! The sound here is completely sublime right from the start – music that moves us, even if we can't understand the language of the lyrics – like some of the best work by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. There's maybe a bit more guitar than on some of the Milton Nascimento work of the period – but used in a fuzzy way that slides in nicely with some of the jazzy phrasing of the instrumentation – which is delivered with help from key contemporaries who include Beto Guedes, Nelson Angelo, Toninho Horta, and Tenorio Jr. The songwriting is amazing – and titles include "Cancao Postal", "Voce Fica Melhor Assim", "Nao Foi Nada", "Calibre", "Faca Seu Jogo", "Toda Essa Agua", "Pensa Voce", "Como O Machando", and "Aos Baroes". MatrixWizard ... LP
Warner, 1978. Near Mint- ... $9.99
There's a wizard on the cover, but the set's way more fusion than fantasy – tightly jamming work from Matrix, a combo who shone brightly at the end of the 70s! There's more horns here than you'd find in the usual fusion group – as the group's a nonet, with Larry Darling and Jeff Pietrangelo on trumpets, Kurt Dietrich on trombone, Mike Hale on flugelhorn and trumpet, John Kirchberger on sax and flute, and Brad McDougall on trombone. John Harmon plays keyboards – both acoustic and electric – and some of the other group members handle keys as well. Titles include "Spring", "Mountolive", "Brown Boy", "Smile At The Foot Of The Ladder", and "Wizard". LP, Vinyl record album

Caetano VelosoNoites Do Norte ... CD
Universal (Japan), 2000. New Copy ... $13.99
A far-reaching album by Caetano – with a wide scope of sounds and influences, from tribal/ethnic percussion, to subtle jazzy backdrops, to guitar-driven numbers that hint at a brief return to rock music. The rich tapestry of themes and images are perfectly linked by Veloso's always-wonderful voice – impeccably rich-toned, with a sound that only seems to get better with age. To us, the record's his first really striking album since 1997's Livro – although it's got a lot more subtlety, in the manner of some of his mid 70s work, like Bicho or Joia. Titles include "Michelangelo Antonioni", "Zera A Reza", "13 De Maio", "Zumbi", "Meu Rio", and "Sou Seu Sabia". CD

✨✧ Herbie Hancock/YardbirdsBlow Up – Original Soundtrack ... CD
Sony, 1966/1996. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An amazing little record – not only a fab 60s soundtrack, but a rare non-Blue Note 60s album by Herbie Hancock! The set was recorded for the film Blow Up – an incredibly dark thriller by Michaelangelo Antonioni, set in swinging London of the 60s, which provided a very groovy backdrop for Herbie's score! The tunes get plenty groovy on this set – dancing out with a combination of fast rhythms, nice piano and organ, and some of the jazzy flourishes you'd expect from a Quincy Jones soundtrack of similar vintage. The Yardbirds also make an appearance on the cut "Stroll On" – which features in one of the best scenes in the film – and other Herbie Hancock tracks include "The Thief", "Verushka", "The Naked Camera", "Bring Down The Birds", "The Kiss", and "The Bed". And not only does this CD contain all the great jazzy bits from the movie, but it also has two previously unreleased tracks by the group Tomorrow, who were originally supposed to play the part played by the Yardbirds. (Actually, the Velvets were supposed to do it, but couldn't get visas.) Great new liner notes, and a very cool poster. Lots of bonuses make this better than the original! CD

✨✧ VariousBang The Box – The Lost Story Of AKA Dance Music Chicago 1987 to 1988 ... LP
Still Music, Late 80s. New Copy 2 LPs Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Bang the box – a classic battle cry from the glory days of Chicago house – summed up here perfectly with a stack of tracks from the short-lived AKA Music label! The package follows strongly in the mode of Still Music's Kill Yourself Dancing set – and like that one, it offers up a really great look at a tiny label from the Windy City club scene – an imprint who cut some key tracks that barely made it out of the midwest, but which really helped to shape the house-heavy rhythms that went onto inspire countless artists in years to come! AKA only issued records for two short years in the mid 80s – but they really helped push some of the leaner, cleaner Chicago house modes that were bursting into the limelight in the acid years – those cool keyboards and dark beats that still stand out as some of the best elements from the classic years. The notes do a great job of telling the story from the perspective of the clubs and the streets – and titles include "Rock It" by Matt Warren & Michaelangelo, "Bang The Box (bang the house mix)" by Matt Warren, "Take Me Higher (ultimate acid mix" by Nexus 6, "Lost In The World" by Michaelangelo, "The Music's Got Me (club mix)" by Team, "Pleasure Dome (house mix)" by Modern Mechanical Music, "Don't Bring Back Memories" by Matt Warren & Michaelangelo, and "Alternative House" by Michaelangelo. ✨✧ StrangelovesI Want Candy (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Bang/Real Gone, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An all-out party rock classic – a record that's titled after the one huge hit by The Strangeloves, but which has killer cuts throughout – a set that's filled with heavily percussive, hard-jamming numbers that really keep the pace moving! The group seems to use a lot more bass drum than most of their contemporaries – a whomping bottom that gives them a lot more power than a trio – and mixed with their trademark rasping guitar sound, the result is something fantastic! There's a lot of heavy power to the set – a standout even from some of the other Australian acts of the period – and the chanted lyrics make the tunes even more compelling. Includes their huge hit "I Want Candy", plus "Night Time", "Just The Way You Are", "It's About My Baby", "No Jive", and "Cara Lin". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousBrainfeeder X (4LP set) ... LP
Brainfeeder, 2010s. New Copy 4LP ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic celebration of the first ten years of the Brainfeeder label – an imprint that's slowly been shaping the sound of soul, hip hop, and other styles over the past decade or so – with a reach that's starting to make waves in jazz and other music too! Brainfeeder has always had a great direction, right from the start – and even some of the older moments here bristle with a relevance that matches the collection's more contemporary cuts and future-pointing tunes (the set features 22 unreleased tracks out of a total of 36) – a really great testament, given that these guys work in worlds that can sometimes go stale quickly. Titles include "Thinking" by Louis Cole, "Opilio" by Lapalux, "King Of The Hill" by Thundercat with Badbadnotgood, "Yellow Gum" by Igloohost, "Black Salt" by Jeremiah Jae, "Otravine" by Locust Toybox, "Lisbon" by Moire, "Beautiful Undertow" by Strangeloop, "Kazaru" by Miguel Atwood Fergusonh, "Flake" by Jameszoo, "Ham" by Mr Oiso, "Why Like This" by Teebs, "Phemy" by Miguel Baptista Benedict, "Needs Deorodant" by Mono/Poly, and "Masks" by Martyn. Easy Tempo (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Slammin's a definite good choice for the title of this one – as this 5th entry in the Easy Tempo series seems even funkier than the other volumes – a set that's got plenty of full-on grooves, hand-picked from the genius Italian soundtrack years of the 60s and 70s! If you're looking for a place to start digging the full range of talents of the maestros of this time, you'd be hard pressed to find a better collection – as the Easy Tempo name always means the best bits from this scene, served up in a package that packs a lot more punch than any single individual soundtrack! RafaelStop Look Listen ... LP
Selection/Sdban (Belgium), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 31.99
A stunning album of spiritual majesty from American pianist Rafael – a player who'd worked in New York during the bop years, but who ended up overseas, and cut this completely unique album in the early 70s! Tracks are all long, and have a quality that owes a bit to the spiritual modes of the post-Coltrane years – but the progression of sounds is very unfamiliar, in part because many of the cuts have these long wordless passages from singer Rose Thompson – who's almost as much of an "instrument" in the music as Rafael's piano! The leader also plays a bit of flute, and the rest of the group features bass, drums, and a mix of vibes and bongos from Johnny Peret – on these beautiful long tunes that include "Night Crawler", "Dead Sea Scrolls", "Archangelo", and "Hommage A Kabylie".
