Cypress HillCypress Hill ... CD
Columbia/Ruffhouse, 1991. Used ... $6.99
Cypress Hill's debut masterpiece – one of the biggest and best first albums in 90s hip hop! There's little we can add to the canon when it comes to describing this album's impact, but it's still pretty revelatory. Like other west coast rap heavies of the time, Cypress Hill documents real world street violence with a darkly comic sensibility, redefined usage of the word "blunt" forever more, and simply delivered one of the most influential rap (or rock, considering the astonishing crossover success) albums of the decade. Titles include "How I Could Just Kill A Man", "Hand On The Pump", "Hole In The Head", "Real Estate", "Stoned Is The Way Of The Walk", "Phunky Feel One", "Pigs", "Latin Lingo", "Something For The Blunted", and "Psychobeatbuckdown". Ron JacobsChild's Garden Of Grass – A Pre-Legalization Comedy ... LP
Elektra, 1971. Very Good Gatefold ... $9.99
A key history lesson for those who thought that pot culture in music only started with Cypress Hill – a weird sound play album originally issued by Elektra Records in the early 70s! The album's the brainchild of producer/director Ron Jacobs – who put the whole thing together with a feel that's almost like freeform FM radio from the left end of the dial at the time – little bits and sketches that are often satiric stabs at the mainstream, although delivered with a lot more wit than we'd expect from the average pothead! The whole thing's kind of like Free To Be You & Me for the stoner crowd – and titles include "Getting Hung-Up", "Creativity", "Funniness", "Physical Effects", "The History Of Marijuana", and "Eating Food". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original pressing. Cover looks nice.)

✨✧ Th1rt3en (Pharoahe Monch)Magnificent Day For An Exorcism ... LP
Fat Beats, 2021. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
An album with a dark sort of cover, and a slightly tricky name to write down – both of which let you know that you're in for something different than usual from Pharoahe Monch! The set's heavy on guitar lines – played with plenty of ferocity and fuzz by Marcus Machado – who gives the record a quality that takes us back to some of the hip hop/metal crossover projects from years back – but with a quality that definitely puts the hip hop first, and which seems to push Pharoahe's rhymes even more with the use of the guitar. Titles include "The Magician", "666", "Fight", "Scarecrow", "The Exorcist", "Kill Kill Kill", and "Cult 45" – and the set features guest work from Cypress Hill and Smithsoneon. ✨✧ Public EnemyWhat You Gonna Do When The Grid Goes Down? ... LP
Def Jam, 2020. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Public Enemy gave us plenty of knowledge and power back in the day – and we maybe need their message more than ever in 2020 – a year that marks their return to their original home at Def Jam! The group have help from plenty of guests here – maybe more so than they would have had back in the day, but very much in keeping with the legacy they inspired – in a lineup that includes Questlove, DJ Premier, Cypress Hill, Impossebulls, Black Thought, Nas, YG, Run DMC, Mike D, Ad Rock, and even George Clinton! The tunes have plenty of old school PE vibes – and titles include "Go At It", "Rest In Beats", "RIP Blackat", "Grid", "State Of The Union", "Toxic", "Yesterday Man", "Fight The Power Remix 2020", "Beat Them All", and "Smash The Crowd". A soundtrack for a documentary, but one that's heavy on hip hop classics from the 90s – and not all of them by west coast groups either! In fact, even if you like the film, you might be better suited to think of this one as a collection of classics from back in the day – hard not to, with cuts that include "Mass Appeal" by Gang Starr, "Hand On The Pump" by Cypress Hill, "Children's Story" by Slick Rick, "Fight The Power" by Public Enemy, "Disco Inferno" by 50 Cent, "Juice" by Eric B & Rakim, "Gin & Juice" by Snoop Dogg, "Bust A Move" by Young MC, "Lean Back" by Terror Squad, "Slam" by Onyx, and "Da Rockwilder" by Method Man & Redman.
