One of the "bottomest" albums you'll ever hear – as trombonist Curtis Fuller meets baritone saxophonist Tate Houston – for a real session of "bone" and "bari" grooving that's one of the most striking Blue Notes of the time! The album features the pair working hard to push their instruments past conventional expectations – gliding with a fluid ease that you really wouldn't expect, yet still working out all the gutbuckety soul propensities that the instruments possess. Part of the strength of the session is the rhythm section – which features Sonny Clark on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – but another strong aspect is the choice of material, which includes some nice originals like "Again", "Pickup", "Nita's Waltz", and "Algonquin". An excellent jam-session set – featuring Curtis Fuller and a host of excellent American players that includes Phil Woods, Freddie Hubbard, Sahib Shihab, Benny Bailey, Eric Dixon, and Patti Brown. The group's also joined by Europeans Stu Martin and Ake Persson – in very long tracks that have an open-ended, live jam session feel to them. This mix of players is very strong, and the set feels like it's more of an MPS/Saba set than the usual Smash/Mercury jazz outing from the time. Recorded in Switzerland in the mid 60s – and featuring long versions of "Stolen Moments", "Blue N Boogie", and "Scrapple From The Apple". LP, Vinyl record album

A very unique album by Curtis Fuller – quite different than any of his other records at the time! The session has Curtis blowing on tunes from the score to Cabin In The Sky – arranged by Manny Albam, and performed by a large group that includes Freddy Hubbard, Hank Jones, and Bob Brookmeyer. Far from the snoozy outing that you might guess from the title, the album's actually a deeply spiritual album that has Fuller playing in warm rich tones that he rarely achieves elsewhere. The backing is sensitive, and doesn't get in the way – and instead creates a magical pillow of sound that allows Fuller to craft these warm and sweet notes that are really wonderful. We're not sure what "soul-stream" is as a genre – but given the strength of this record, we'd be more than willing to grant it onto Curtis Fuller all by himself! The record's a gem that's even more obscure than Fuller's already-rare dates for Blue Note at the end of the 50s – a crack set done for the Warwick label, and one that features an all-star group who've got a great blend of modern edges and soulful rhythms. Alongside Fuller's trombone, other players include Yusef Lateef on tenor and flute, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Walter Bishop on piano, Buddy Catlett on bass, and Stu Martin on drums – making a rare early appearance here. Heavy duty hardbop – one of three amazing Epic Records sessions cut by drummer Dave Bailey! Dave didn't ever cut many sessions as a leader – but when he did, they really cooked hard – with a quality level and sharpness of vision that easily rivals the best on Blue Note or Prestige Records at the time! In fact, this album would have been right at home on either imprint – a smoking session of soulful hardbop, with very long songs that allow plenty of room for solos by players who include Charlie Rouse on tenor, Clark Terry on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and Horace Parlan on piano – who are all in the group with Dave, alongside bassist Peck Morrison. There's a nicely unbridled feel to the whole set – a real "something extra" that's always made the album a treasure – and titles include the side-long 17 minute "Blues For JP", plus "Slop Jah", "Little Old Mongoose", and "Evad Smurd". A landmark recording by a whole new chapter in Art Blakey's career! During the early 60s, Blakey expanded the Jazz Messengers from a quintet to an incredibly tight sextet – adding in the trombone of Curtis Fuller for an extra-punched up frontline that also included Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, and Wayne Shorter on tenor, who had returned to the group after a short departure. The band was augmented by the wonderfully lyrical and soulful piano of a young Cedar Walton – who brought a strong degree of sophistication, and who was a perfect interpreter of Shorter's rich writing talents. The whole group performs together perfectly on this wonderful (and oft-overlooked) session – especially on the tracks "Shaky Jake", "Backstage Sally", and "Bu's Delight". LP, Vinyl record album

You gotta love the confidence in Blakey's title for this one – because even in the late 70s, over 20 years since starting the Jazz Messengers, he was still very much in his prime! The album has him working with a wonderful group that includes Bobby Watson, Curtis Fuller, David Schnitter, and James Williams – plus percussionist Ray Mantilla, added in on a few tracks to give the set a slightly fuller sound. Tracks are long, dynamic, and gorgeous – really stepping out with the warmth and imagination that Blakey never let die during his career – but which seemed to be buring as brightly during this stretch as it was during the few really noteworthy points of earlier years. The set features a wonderful early reading of Watson's "To See Her Face", plus other tracks that include "Hawkman", "People Who Laugh", "Jodie", and "1978". CD also features 2 bonus tracks from the album Reflection In Blue. CD

The album's years ahead of its time – and arguably opens the door for countless spiritual jazz projects like this in the 70s, more proof that Blakey was a groundbreaking artist who was always opening doors for others! Blakey's own work on drums is joined by percussion from Montego Joe, Chief Bey, Garvin Masseux, James Ola, Folami, Robert Crowder, and Solomon Ilori – the last of whom would record his own record for Blue Note – and the rest of the group features Yusef Lateef on flute and tenor, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and the great Ahmed Abdul-Malik on bass – a great choice for the record, given that he was mixing together similar modes on his own records of the time. The record is a strange batch of soul jazz tracks that features a number of different groups with players like Fuller, Waldron, Little, Donald Byrd, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, Pepper Adams, and others – all playing soul jazz tracks with lots of added percussion. The percussion takes the form (mostly) of booming drumming which augments the deep grooves of the tracks. Most of the tracks on this one have been pulled together to emphasize the sound of the trumpeters – and tracks include "Ping Pong", "November Afternoon", "Call to Arms", and "Wee Tina". A great little album by this wonderful trumpeter – and one that we passed up for years because we were afraid of the words "brass" and "shout" in the title! If you're a Farmer fan, though, don't worry about this being some sort of snoozy "bold n brassy" session – because it's a much more subtle record, and features some excellent lead solos by Farmer, set amidst a larger group arranged wonderfully by Benny Golson! Golson brings a great sense of balance to the album – mixing some larger horn passages with soulfully snapping rhythms, all at a level that still allows plenty of space for Farmer to solo sweetly on trumpet. Other players on the record include Lee Morgan on trumpet and Curtis Fuller on trombone, Percy Heath on bass, and either Philly Joe Jones or Elvin Jones on drums – and titles include "Minor Vamp", "Nica's Dream", "Stella By Starlight", "Moanin", "April In Paris", and "Five Spot After Dark". Benny's California Message is loud and clear on this great session originally produced for the Japanese market – an album that has him working with old bandmate Curtis Fuller, as well as younger California soul jazz players, like Thurman Green on trombone, Oscar Brashear on trumpet, and Bill Mays on piano! Golson's playing both tenor and soprano sax on the set – opening up in that more spiritual style he started to use during the 80s – an approach that was almost post-Coltrane at times, with a slightly freer sound that opened up a whole new chapter of his career. The tunes are mostly older Golson classics, taken in a slightly looser style than originally – with titles that include "Soul Talk", "Blues March", "California Message", "The Berliner", "Whisper Not", and "Free Again". A really beautiful session from Benny Golson – and proof that, throughout the years, Golson could always continue to turn out wonderful material! Benny's working here with old bandmate Curtis Fuller on trombone – and the pair are supported by a trio who include Bill Mays on piano, Bob Magnusson on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums – all held wonderfully in command by Golson, who's working here with a tightness that recalls Jazztet years, yet which also has him and Fuller opening up in nice long solos. There's a sense of warmth here that crackles wonderfully – that raspy Golson tone that we first grew to love in the late 50s, and which has only deepened with age by this point. The set includes the wonderful original tune "One More Mem'ry", plus great versions of Golson's "Sad To Say", "Touch Me Lightly", "Five Spot After Dark", "Once Again", and "Out Of The Past". CD

Later work from legendary jazz vibist Lionel Hampton – and a set that has him returning to the energy of the large group ensemble that first brought him fame in the 40s! A 70s Milestone 2-fer reissue collecting two great 60s sides from Yusef Lateef. The Three Faces Of Yusef Lateef is a sublime piece of work, proof that he could be exotic and swinging at the same time. The three "faces" of the set are Lateef's work on tenor, flute, and oboe – each of which get a few tracks to themselves – as Lateef works with a core Detroit group of Hugh Lawson on piano, Herman Wright on bass, and Lex Humphries on drums – to further refine the already great sound of his earlier albums for Savoy! Tunes are set up in such a way as to vary the instrumentation without varying the mood too much – making for a record with many voices, but a really unified sound overall – and one that's incredibly soulful on the best numbers. Ron Carter joins the group on cello on a few tracks, and Lawson even plays a bit of celeste on the set as well. Titles include "Lateef Minor 7th", "Salt Water Blues", "Adoration", and "Quarantine". The second LP, The Centaur & The Phoenix is an ambitious larger group album, one that's carried off with all the genius of his smaller group sessions from the time. Yusef is working again with a variety of reed instruments – including tenor sax, oboe, flute, and argol – amongst a larger horn section that also features Josea Taylor on bassoon, Tate Houston on baritone sax, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and Clark Terry and Richard Williams on trumpet. Rhythm is by the trio of Joe Zawinul piano, Ben Tucker bass, and Lex Humphries drums – and although the horn arrangements are complicated, they're always soulfully swinging – never too academic, and really done on a way that just expands the mixture of exoticism and hardbop expressed on other Lateef albums! A brilliant assemblage of players – working here under the Timeless All Stars tag, because they'd all recorded for the label – but held together much more deeply through a rich tradition of west coast soul jazz! The team of Harold Land and Bobby Hutcherson are wonderfully united for the session – working with Curtis Fuller on trombone, Cedar Walton on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – all to carve out longer tracks that sparkle with the best open feeling of the sound that Land and Hutcherson first put down together at the end of the 60s. There's a sense of warmth and good spirit to the recording – but not of the type that dampens the energies of the players – as the best tracks on the record have a searing, searching feel that's pretty darn surprising for such an all-star session! A stone smoker from the great Stanley Turrentine – an album that's got a lot more of an edge than some of his other Blue Note dates from the time – yet, for some odd reason, wasn't issued until the end of the 70s! The group's a crackling septet – yet still put together relatively loosely, not with the tighter arrangements that would show up so often in Turrentine's years. A great package – one that brings together the four first albums from the fantastic Eastern Rebellion group! First up is Eastern Rebellion 1 – seminal work in the development of the career of Cedar Walton – the formation of his excellent Eastern Rebellion ensemble, a group that became a platform for soul jazz expression for the next two decades! The group on this set features George Coleman on tenor, Sam Jones on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – all working in territory that Walton and Clifford Jordan were exploring heavily at the time – long, drawn-out soul jazz tunes – frequently built upon modal rhythms, and touched with traces of post-Coltrane blowing. The key factor, though, is that the work's never too outside, never too overindulgent – just hard-swinging soul jazz, in a 70s expression of the older Blue Note ideal! Titles include "Bolivia", "5/4 Thing", "Mode For Joe", and "Naima". Eastern Rebellion 2 is the second trip into the studio for Cedar Walton's mighty Eastern Rebellion ensemble – and every bit as great as the first! This time around, the lineup's a bit different – with Bob Berg in on tenor, and Curtis Fuller expanding the group on trombone – but the groove is still the same – wonderfully in the pocket soul jazz, swinging with a gentle and fluid glide that's really tremendous. The work ranks up there with the best of Walton's recordings ever – and the tunes are all originals with a rich imagination for tone, soul, and color – and plenty of space for strong solo work. Titles include "The Maestro", "Sunday Suite", "Ojos De Rojo", "Fantasy In D", and "Clockwise". Eastern Rebellion 3 is the lesser-known third album by Cedar Walton's landmark Eastern Rebellion combo – one of the most important indie soul jazz groups of the late 70s, still going strong on this set! The lineup is still the same as on the second set – with Bob Berg on tenor, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and the wonderfully solid team of Billy Higgins and Sam Jones on rhythm. However, the sound here is slightly different – with a more conscious sense of disharmony at times – creating an unsettling edge that replaces the warm, fluid feel of earlier records. The change shows that Walton and the group were still growing and searching – and titles include "Incognito", "Firm Roots", "Seven Minds", and "Never Never Land". Last up is Eastern Rebellion 4 – an expanded version of the quartet you'd usually expect to hear in this classic Eastern Rebellion series – and a group that really makes all the best of all their added elements! In addition to Cedar Walton's amazing work on piano, the set also features Curtis Fuller on trombone, Chocolate Armenteros on trumpet, Bob Berg on tenor, David Williams on bass, and Billy Higgins on drums – the last three of whom are familiar Rebellion partners, but who get some new power in the lead from the presence of Fuller and Armenteros! Chocolate's horn seems to lead the group into some Latin jazz modes – which really open up Billy Higgins' work on the kit in a great way – and Walton responds with a strongly rhythmic version of his lyrical mode. Art Farmer and Benny Golson were both known as well-composed players during the 50s – strongly soulful, but often with a fine sense of arrangement that usually tended towards the lyrical side of things. With this group, though, they turned that approach towards a heavier sounding style of jazz – tightly stepping soul jazz, in the manner that was being explored at the time by Cannonball Adderley, Art Blakey, and others – presented by Farmer and Golson with a bit more groove and a wonderful kick at the bottom! The set features a core sextet of key players – the legendary John Gilmore on tenor sax, making a rare appearance here away from the Sun Ra Arkestra – plus Curtis Fuller on trombone, Tommy Flanagan on piano, Art Davis on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – the last three of whom provide a soulful, almost spiritual rhythm to the record – elevating Freddie's horn to tremendous heights, possibly for the first time in his career. All tracks are nice and long – and titles include the Hubbard originals "Bob's Place", "Happy Times", and "The 7th Day", all of which roll along on a groove that's not what you'd expect – plus versions of "Summertime" and "Caravan". The album's a bit of a blowing session outing – with 2 different groups, one a sextet with Curtis Fuller, Webster Young, and Gil Coggins; the other a quartet with Mal Waldron on piano – but thanks to the strong tone and vision of Jackie, there's a really unified feel to the set, and an edginess that makes the whole thing hang together nicely. The tracks are long and soulful, and recorded with a resonant quality that makes the tunes echo out even more.
