CultureTwo Sevens Clash (3LPs – 40th anniversary edition) ... LP
Joe Gibbs/17 North Parade, 1978. New Copy 3LP ... Just Sold Out!
The first album from Culture, and still their most classic – a set that takes its title from a prediction by Marcus Garvey – who said that there would be trouble in the world when "two sevens clash" on July 7, 1977! Fortunately, we made it all through that date in one piece – and good thing too, as the record's gone on to even more legendary status as the years have gone on – with a righteous sort of energy that just seems to get more important over the decades. Joe Gibbs produced, and arranged with Errol Thompson – and the slow-stepping rhythms of the set, heavy on bottom-end sounds, are a perfect backdrop for the message-oriented lyrics in the music. Every cut's a classic – and titles include "I'm Alone In The Wilderness", "Pirate Days", "Two Sevens Clash", "Calling Rastafari", "I'm Not Ashamed", "Get Ready To Ride The Lion To Zion", "Black Starliner Must Come", "Jah Pretty Face", "See Them A Come", and "Natty Dread Taking Over". Very special edition – with 11 bonus tracks that include ""Natty Dread Taking Over/Invasion" by Culture & Roy, "Natty Gone Clear" by Joe Gibbs & The Professionals, "Fulfillment" by The Mighty Two, "I'm Not Ashamed/Under Tight Wraps" by Culture & I Roy, "See Them A Come/Mask Mi Mask" by Culture & Prince Weedy, "Informer" by Culture, "Natty Pass His GCE" by Shorty The President, "State Of Emergency" by Joe Gibbs & The Professionals, and "Informer Version" by The Mighty Two. Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 2012. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the crunchiest efforts we've heard from IG Culture in awhile – a record that's filled with the cosmic beats we've always loved in his music, yet firmly grounded on earth overall! The set mixes heavy rhythms with lots of vocals and rhymes – efforts from ID 4 Windz, Mr Mensah, Julie Dexter, K Banger, Bilal Salaam, and John Robinson – all wrapped and layered together in ways that are quite different from conventional hip hop, and which really resonate with the kind of collective, collaborative spirit we love in IG's music! There's an even darker feel here than usual – which we really appreciate – and titles include "Catalog Pieces", "Futures Back", "Black Renaissance", "Core Exit", "Truth", "Tangile Dream", "Outsider", "What's Happening", "The Sankofaz Peace Ark-Extra", and "Do The Math". David Wertman Sun EnsembleWide Eye Culture (3LP set – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Sunmuse/BBE (UK), 1983. New Copy 3LPs Gatefold (reissue)... $39.99 49.99
Really beautiful sounds from bassist David Wertman – an unsung hero of the late 70s spiritual jazz scene around New England, and one who delivers this gem in close partnership with singer Lynne Meryl! Meryl's got this warm, fluid style that's a lot like the way that some of the better Bay Area groups were using jazz vocals a few years before – a mode inspired by overseas singers like Flora Purim or Urzula Dudziak, but used here alongside soulful instrumentation that draws a lot from the more inside currents of the loft jazz scene! Wertman's bass is at the core, and tremendous throughout – full of fire and force, and sometimes matched with a bit of percussion – a musical force that's handled here more fully by Tony Vacca, who employs a range of instruments – next to piano and prepared piano from Tom McClung, and these strong trombone solos from Tim Atherton – a player who really sends the whole thing over the top with his contributions! Most tracks have a great modal groove – and titles include "Forest Dance", "Camel", "Flute Song", "New Earth", "Sing My Love Song", and "Dance Of The Mideast Madness". This expanded edition brings in more rare cuts from other releases – eight bonus tracks that include "How Come", "Up In The Sky", "Sci Fi Fantasy", "Blessing Of Love", "Golden Light", and "You Are My Love". Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 26.99
A true revolution in Cuban music – not the familiar cha cha and pachanga modes of the pre-Castro years, but instead the huge wave of fresh styles and combinations that sprung up in the years to come! The tracks here aren't the kind of Cuban sounds that are locked in time by the all-star representations of the scene that circle widely – and instead, this music represents the younger, more experimental side of the scene – continually creating new styles and hybrids during the 70s and 80s, even at a time when most of the records weren't making it out to the world at large! Make no mistake, there's certainly elements of older Afro Latin rhythms, and Latin jazz instrumentation – but those are blended with new approaches to rhythm, instrumentation, and the overall role of the musicians and singers – on tracks that will really open up your ears. Gilles Peterson helped put the package together for Soul Jazz – and the whole thing's got the same hybrid hallmarks as his more recent recording forays in Havana – with cuts that include "Cancion Con Todos" by Grupo De Experimentacion Sonora Del Icaic, "Hast Las Cuantas" by Grupo Monumental, "Luna Wanestain" by Emiliano Salvador, "Te Quiero Porque Te Quiero" by Pablo Milanes, "Un Lamento Heco Cancion" by Los Reyes 73, "Dacapo" by Raul Gomez, "La Patica" by Paquito D'Rivera, "Rompe Cocorioco" by Juan Pablo Torres, "Mi Ritmo Caliente" by Juan Formell & Los Van Van, "Chequere Son" by Grupo Irakere, "El Son Del Campeon" by Conjunto Rubavana, and "Con Cadencia Y Con Dulzura" by Las D'Aida. Soul Jazz (UK), 1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s. New Copy 2CD ... $21.99 22.99
A really fantastic little collection – a look at the way that sounds from the Caribbean changed over nicely when brought to the UK scene – where immigrants from former British territory really helped to transform the sound of London in the 70s! The music here is served up in a range of different styles – certainly reggae, but with plenty of funk and soul too, mixed with other elements from the islands – all brought into new play together when taken up in the UK! Right from the start, the English artists were starting to put their own spin on things – so the cuts within offer up all these great new directions – maybe even more surprises than you're used to finding on some of the other collections from the Soul Jazz label! The presentation of material is superb, and there's some very detailed notes as well – with cuts that include "No Time For Hello" by Harry Beckett, "Ooh Boy" by Sandra Reid, "Don't Call Us Immigrants" by Tabby Cat Kelly, "RK1" by The Terrorist, "Black Pride" by Brown Sugar, "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" by Black Harmony, "Positive Vibrations" by Pebbles, "Love Money" by Funk Masters, "Ragga Trip" by Ragga Twins, "Be Thankful For What You've Got" by Winston Curtis, "Fug" by Cymande, "Sticks Man" by Black Slate, "Rising To The Top" by Dee Sharp, "Misty Winter" by Digital Mystikz, "Compelled" by Cosmic Irden, and "Still In Love" by Janet Kay & Alton Ellis, and "Java Bass" by Shut Up & Dance. El (UK), 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 4CD ... $24.99 30.99
A really great idea for a collection – one that brings together postwar modern music in all of its many formats – from avant jazz, to early electronics, to Indian music, 20th Century classical, and even a bit of straighter jazz moments too! The package is very ear-opening – as it offers the chance to hear instrumentalists next to compositional talents that had inspired them – and the collection provides a way to hear different strains of sonic experimentation that were sometimes running parallel to each other, sometimes criss-crossing in strange ways. There's a wealth of musical discoveries throughout – and the 4CD set is overflowing with key cuts from Ornette Coleman, Bela Bartok, Edgard Varese, Daphne Oram, Jean Sibelius, Eric Dolphy, Ravi Shankar, Pierre Henry, John Cate, John Coltrane, Humphrey Searle, Arnold Schoenberg, Bill Evans, Olivier Messiaen, Luigi Nono, Charles Ives, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Bruno Maderna, Julian Bream, and many others. University Of Minnesota Press, 2006. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very deep look at the rise of easy listening in the postwar years – the transformation of instrumental styles to a particular kind of mood music that had a huge rise in sales during the 50s and 60s! Author Tim Anderson looks at a wide number of factors here – including workings of the musicians unions and record industry, as well as the larger discourse on sound aesthetics in the hi-fi generation – all with ties to the larger political and social climate of the time. The book's written from an academic perspective, and is clearly the amount of a great deal of research – and comes with copious amounts of notes that also point the way towards lots of future reading. 236 pages, softcover, with some black and white images. An essential re-publishing of an important British journal from the end of the 70s – one that called for a "liberatory arts and culture movement throughout the Third World" – and which featured a host of different contributors from around the world! The publication only lasted three issues – all of which are reproduced here – and it pulled no punches in its combination of culture and politics – beginning with its "Preliminary Notes For A Black Manifesto" in the very first issue – and running through a range of different subjects handled by a list of contributors that includes Ariel Dorfman, Guy Brett, Ayyub Malik, David Medalla, and Babatunde Lawal. All three rare issues are presented here in their original black and white – collected as a single volume. Book

Brilliant work from Thievery Corporation! This duo truly seems to be getting better and better as the years go by, progressing to deeper realms in both tone and craft – and somehow doing that while pulling us in with immediate, insistent appeal. That's no small feat! Tripped out jazzy hip hop soundscapes, straighter trance-y sounds, hard hitting funk and all around sonic adventurousness. We've always appreciated these guys, but we've grown to really love 'em! Forget any cliches you might have in mind about Cuban music – that idea that all the "old guys" of the Buena Vista Social Club were responsible for most of the sounds of Havana – because here, you'll hear amazing sounds from the younger generation – an amazing array of talents who were really transforming the scene in the 70s and early 80s! Sure, there's some familiar elements here – many of the artists start with older Afro Cuban roots – but the music also really takes off with all sorts of weird and wonderful touches – bits of funk, soul, jazz, and even some electronics – used in really compelling ways that definitely live up to the "experiments" in the title, but continue to provide the sort of groove you'd imagine from Cuban music. We loved the previous volume in this series, and we might well say that the second one is even better – with a stunning set list of tracks that includes "El 456" by Los Brito, "Luces En La Pista" by Raul Gomez, "Tema De El Rancheador De La Naturaleza" by Leo Brouwer, "Y Que Bien" by Juan Pablo Torres, "Quemando" by Los Latinos, "Muevete Con Las Fuerzas Del Corazon" by FA 5, "Amame Y No Piensas Mas" by Farah Maria, "La Rumba" by Luis Carbonell "Llegue Llegue" by Juan Formel & Los Van Van, "Para Que Niegas" by Los Papines, "Baila Mi Guaguanco" by Grupo Raices Nuevas, "Como Arrulos De Palma" by Tambores De Enrique Bonne, "Expreso Ritmico" by Ricardo Eddy Martinez, and "Aqui Estamos" by Grupo Sintesis. Africa Seven (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really cool little package, and one that looks at the rise of reggae on the African scene of the 70s – including many tracks that mark a moment before that big 80s wave of African-based superstars that rose up to larger global fame! The cuts here are maybe a bit more homegrown and unusual – and there's a fair bit of work by West African acts who didn't always record in a reggae mode, but managed to add the rhythms to the palette of their albums in the 70s. As with all the titles on the Africa Seven label, the set list is great – with titles that include "I'll Be Your Man" by Christy Essien, "Bobby" by The Lijadu Sisters, "Darling I'm So Proud Of You" by Black Reggae, "Hello Friends" by Georges Happi, "Goodbye Friends" by The Mebusas, "Hop Sy Trong" by Tala Andra Marie, "I'll Cry" by Essama Bikoula, "All This Nonsense" by Carlos & Miki, and "Babette D O" by Pasteur Lappe. BBE (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most fantastic collections we've ever heard from DJ Amir – a set that may well blow away his classic On/Off Track sets for the depth of its spirit and feeling! Amir's been well-known as a crate digger for many years – and while digging for funk, soul, and hip hop on the New York scene, he's also come across plenty of rare Latin nuggets – not familiar salsa or crossover Latin Soul, but instead some much deeper numbers that show just how much spirit and imagination the music had when it was at its best! Most of the numbers here are from late 60s and 70s vintage – and many have this jazzy energy that goes way past just simple grooves, and which instead features the richer colors and complicated motions of some of Eddie Palmieri's music, especially in the 70s. Titles include the previously unreleased "Salsa (parts 1 & 2)" by Fito Foster – plus "Picadillo" by La Moderna Of New York, "Bomba" by Dax Pacem, "Paranoia" by Wayne Gorbea Y Su Conjunto Salsa, "Rogelio Tiene La Salsa" by Chino Y Su Conjunto Melao, "Yo No Bailo Con Juana" by Cortijo Y Kako, "Vete De Aqui" by Joey Aponte, "Asi Asi Descarga" by Mike Hernandez Y Su Sonora Casino, "Tembelque" by Louie Colon, "El Ritmo Soledad" by Orchestra Soledad, and "El Pulpo" by Joey Pastrana. Fantasy/Culture Factory, 1973. New Copy ... $5.99 14.99
Quite possibly the rarest of all Johnny Guitar Watson albums – and his first from the 70s – a mindblowing batch of trippy soul tunes that sounds far different than much of his later work! Johnny's not yet in the funky mode here – and he's working in a very cool flanged-out approach that has his vocals tripping lightly with his guitar – in a spacious soul mode that captures some of the energy of Shuggie Otis at the time. The overall sound is incredibly righteous – and the album's a delight throughout! Titles include "Lovin You", "If I Had The Power", "You Bring Love", "I Get A Feeling", and "You're The Sweetest Thing I've Ever Had". CD

Brother Don plays lean and mean, in a nice tight group that features Grant Green on guitar, Sonny Clark on piano, and Billy Higgins on drums – all of whom give Wilkerson a freer setting than he ever got working with his more famous bandleader, Ray Charles! The groove has a freer edge than on some of Wilkerson's other albums, with touches that almost reach a Latin sound at times – an influence most likely from Green's exotic work on guitar, and Higgins' wonderfully free rhythms. Titles include "Pigeon Peas", "Camp Meetin", "Jeanie Weanie", and "Dem Tamborines". CD

✨✧ Larry CoryellFairyland (pink & white marbled vinyl pressing) (2022 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Flying Dutchman/Culture Factory, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the loosest, most open albums from the early years of guitarist Larry Coryell – and a set that maybe has him pointing even more strongly forward in a jazz direction than some of his earlier, more rock-influenced work! The album's a live date, recorded at the Montreux jazz festival – and the group's just a trio, with the great Bernard Pretty Purdie on drums, and Chuck Rainey on bass – both players who can be funky when they want, but who are more relaxed and loose here – so that Larry himself can really stretch out and soar in the lead. The lack of any other instrumentation really brings a focus on Coryell's maturing skills on guitar – as he stretches out on long tracks, singing a bit, but mostly jamming, sometimes with a darker and noisier sound than we'd expect! Titles include "Souls Dirge", "Eskalemuir", and "Further Explorations For Albert Stinson". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Frederick KnightI've Been Lonely For So Long (limited edition LP sleeve pressing) ... CD
Stax/Culture Factory (France), 1973. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A lasting 70s classic from Frederick Knight – easily his best-remembered album, thanks to the legendary title track! The set's got a slow-burning, deeply soulful feel all the way through – one that takes Knight's high-end vocals, and backs them with some bottom-burning instrumentation that certainly owes something to the Muscle Shoals sound, but which comes off in a way that's a bit more organic, and less in the trademark style of the time. Organ features heavily on most numbers – matching Knight's vocals with a bubbling energy that cooks things up nicely – and tracks include the classic "I've Been Lonely For So Long" , plus "Trouble", "Now That I've Found You", "This Is My Song Of Love To You", "I Let Me Chance Go By", and "Your Love's All Over Me". King Sunny AdeSynchro System/Aura ... CD
Mango/T-Bird (UK), 1983/1984. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A pair of groundbreaking records from King Sunny Ade – both of which represent a new wave of interest in African music after the initial burst of the Fela Kuti generation! First up is Synchro System – fantastic work from King Sunny Ade – one of his first truly global releases, and an album that marked a whole new sound in his music! Sunny had been issuing lots of his own records back home in Nigeria – but this set has the juju master working in London, with really fantastic production that pushes his sound in really great ways – echoey waves of basslines and percussion, subtle but powerful vocals, and percolating guitar that takes on a whole new sonic sensibility in the setting! There's a richness to the texture that's amazing – almost as if Brian Eno produced – and titles include "Synchro Feelings Ilako", "Mo Ti Mo", "Penkele", "Maajo", "Synchro System", "E Saiye Re", "Tolongo", "E Wele", and "Synchro Reprise". Next up is Aura – a crucial record in the early days of the global scene in the 80s – a set that lifts the music of King Sunny Ade from its roots in Nigeria, and mixes it up with some fresh elements that really open things up for a world's worth of ears! The approach isn't commercial – at least not in the modes of the later world music years – but there's occasional elements that echo the beat culture rising up in New York and London, mixed with the warmer sounds that were always at Sunny's music – especially that way of making the acoustic percussion and basslines come together in flowing waves of completely sublime sound! All tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Gboromiro", "Oremi", "Ire", "Iro", "Ogunja", and "Ase". CD

Faber & Faber (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $6.99 24.00
One of the most unique books we've ever read on the subject of hip hop – a volume that takes the Wu-Tang as its main touchstone, but which moves past any simple history or biography – and instead paints a very complex picture of music and culture in America through 36 different "chambers" – all interlocked essays that deal with urban space, technology, family, film, and other diverse topics that work together surprisingly well! Rather than attempt to take on the monolith that is the Wu-Tang Clan, author Will Ashon instead illuminates their universe – both the one that lead to their musical creations, and their reception – putting that legacy in great perspective with some wonderfully written prose! Hardcover edition is 374 pages, with some black and white images. Book

AzymuthPartido Novo ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2002. Used ... $9.99
Warm, wonderful, and incredibly far-reaching in scope – possibly the most ambitious record cut by Azymuth in recent years – a perfect blend of jazzy fusion, Brazilian rhythms, and some of the London broken beat culture that the group have come into contact with through their label, Far Out. The sound is clean and spare – a dance between percussion and keyboards that reminds us how great Azymuth can sound when they keep things simple. A few cuts have vocals, but the overall approach is instrumental – and the record features production and programming by Roc Hunter, and was recorded by Kirk Degiorgio. Titles include "Tempo Classico", "Em Marica", "Partido Novo", "Sudade Do Doutor", "Nome Dele E Joan", "Algoado Doce", and "Rede De Espera". CD has 12 tracks in all. CD

BBE (UK), 2021. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $52.99 54.99
One of the most compelling albums in years from Billy Bang – and that's really saying a lot, given how much compelling music he's recorded! The set is put together in conjunction with a fascinating documentary on Bang's life, music, and time spent fighting in Vietnam – an experience that stayed with him for decades, scarred him, and which here has become a way of reaching back into the past, into the culture, as a way to find some sort of personal healing! The result is fantastic – as Bang's amazing work on violin comes in contact with a variety of Vietnamese artists – including Tran Manh Tuan on tenor, Duc Dau of the Phu Dong Family Band, and even the larger Hanoi Symphony Orchestra – all different musical partners who really help Billy expand his sound and resolve some of his decades-old conflicts – presented alongside some spoken passages from the film that are very striking, and a few solo numbers too. Titles include "Mystery Of The Mekong", "Song For Don Cherry", "New Saigon Phunk", "Jungle Lullaby", "Dan Da Traditional Lithophone", and "Moments For The Kiamia". LP, Vinyl record album

Robbie BashoVenus In Cancer ... LP
Blue Thumb/Traffic, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $21.99 24.98
One of the wildest albums ever from the great Robbie Basho – as you might guess from the cover! Basho first made waves with his solo guitar work (and a bit of vocalizations) for the Takoma label, during the early years of John Fahey – but as the 60s ended, Robbie had more of a spiritual awakening – which really changed up certain aspects of his music. The set's still got some beautiful long-spun guitar passages – acoustic work that makes Basho maybe an even closer tie to Sandy Bull than Fahey – but Robbie also sings a bit too, in this weirdly trilling voice that almost feels as if it's been pulled from some 15th century pagan culture, but infused with a new missionary spirit. Most of the set is instrumental, but these vocal moments are wonderfully haunting too – and titles include "Venus In Cancer", "Eagle Sails The Blue Diamond Waters", "Kowaka D'Amour", "Song For The Queen", "Cathedrals Et Fleur De Lis", and "Wine Song (Sweet Wine Of Love)". Dee Dee Bridgewater with Irwin MayfieldDee Dee's Feathers ... CD
Okeh, 2015. Used ... $5.99
A really beautiful project from the great Dee Dee Bridgewater – a set that has the singer paying tribute to the city and culture of New Orleans, but in a way that's free of the hoke you'd find in other projects of this nature! Dee Dee approaches the music – as with all of her albums – from a rock-solid, jazz vocal approach – focusing first on her tremendous skills as a singer – her fantastic ability to interpret material and really make it her own – then finding space for other flourishes that color the compositions, with great help from Irvin Mayfield, who's at the instrumental helm of the project. And the tunes aren't just some post-Katrina soppy numbers trying to recreate the past – but a wonderful array of different selections that both echo the still-thriving, still-essential jazz culture in the city, and the range of 20th century expressions of its music. Way better than you might guess – and one of Bridgewater's best in years! Titles include "Treme Song/Do Whatcha Wanna", "Dee Dee's Feathers", "Big Chief", "One Fine Thing", "Whoopin Blues", "Congo Square", and "C'Est Ici Que Je T'Aime". CD

One of the most striking Egyptian jazz recordings of the 70s – and maybe one of the most avant, too – an unusual recording done at the German Culture Institute in Cairo, and an early collaboration between Hartmut Geerken and Salah Ragab! Ragab plays drums and percussion – but the approach is very different than his more rhythmic Cairo Jazz Band dates – as the group here really live up to the "free jazz" in their name – and come across more like the Sun Ra Arkestra during their greatest moments of free improvisation! Other players include Farouk Abdel Rahman on alto and percussion, Abdel Hakim Zael on baritone sax, Moohi El-Din Osman on bass, and Mahmoud Ayoub on tenor – and Geerken himself plays a wide range of percussive instruments and other items – including a "toy car producing the sound of a siren". The group here has tremendous tenor from Pharoah Sanders – alongside work from Alice Coltrane on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Rashied Ali on drums – joined by the more obscure Algie DeWitt, who plays bata drum on the session – alongside other percussion work that's been credited to Jumma Santos. Numero, 1979. New Copy ... $14.99 19.98
A really beautiful album of harmony soul – and a set that we'd already love for its music, even if the group didn't have an interesting story! Edge Of Daybreak are part of a small sub-culture of 70s soul groups – an ensemble who existed behind prison bars, like Power Of Attorney or The Escorts – and like both of those groups, they've got an amazingly strong sound – one that goes way beyond their incarcerated status, and which should have made them (like the other two) worthy of greater attention in the outside world! The material was recorded in 1979, but it's got a fragile early 70s vibe – maybe because that was the last time these guys heard work in the mainstream – and the voices come together with a style that's proud, but quite heartbreaking at times too – a bit like The Whatnauts on their best ballad material. If you dig harmony soul, you'll find plenty to love here – especially if you like early 70s material from Philly and New Jersey – and don't even worry about the behind bars gimmick, because the record has way more to offer than that! The Wu-Tang Clan didn't just pop onto the scene in the early 90s – but their rise to the top was somewhat meteoric, and was part of the group's larger vision for their own place and that of hip hop within the broader American culture! Author SH Fernando really gets at that ambition – getting past some of the musical platitudes that are usually linked to the group and its many projects – and instead tracing a detailed history that starts with early sparks of expression, and rises to show the full ongoing impact the group's members have had. Fernando had great access from the group in putting the book together, but not in the "fluff" project way such access usually creates – and he also drew on decades of his own materials, put together as his career as a journalist kept him in contact with the group as they changed over the years. Maybe the first-ever collection of the work of this important group from Djibouti – a huge state-financed ensemble whose performances were captured on tape for radio, but never issued as regular commercial albums at the time! 4 Mars take their name from a key moment of independence in the young nation – and they're a very powerful force on these recordings from the 80s and early 90s – bringing together a huge amount of current concepts from the East African scene, all within a very large, shifting array of singers, percussionists, and horn players too! At times, the rhythms almost seem to echo Jamaican music, but there's also currents of Ethiopian and Sudanese styles too – no surprise, given the crossroads of Djibouti, which maybe makes the group as welcoming to outside styles as they are importantly representing their nation's culture. As with other sets on the Ostinato label, the package is an essential look at sounds we never would have heard otherwise – rescued from the tape archive of the national radio station, and presented here with very detailed notes on the music and culture at the time. ✨✧ Ralph J GleasonMusic In The Air (hardcover) ... Book
Yale University Press, 2016. New Copy ... $6.99 30.00
Ralph J Gleason might just be one of the coolest cats to ever write about music – a key part of the San Francisco scene during the postwar years – where his talents helped illuminate both the worlds of art and music during the beat generation – then really helped shine a spotlight on all the cultural changes in the city during the 60s – which even led to Gleason's role in the founding of Rolling Stone magazine! Gleason always had a great eye (and ear) for things that were new and special, but never in a way that was slavish to the moment – or to its creator – and the book features an initial section on his writings on jazz and blues – with essays on John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Carmen McRae, BB King, John Handy, Vince Guaraldi & Bola Sete, Cal Tjader, Ben Webster, the San Francisco Jazz scene, and other diverse topics. The second section features Gleason on folk and rock – with bits on Jefferson Airplane, Hank Williams, Lenny Bruce, Odetta, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, and others – and the final section features articles on politics and culture – covering topics that include Richard Nixon, radio payola, Law & Order, flower children, and other slices of society, seen from the Gleason viewpoint. Book is hardcover, and 309 pages. Book

✨✧ Colin GrantNatural Mystics – Marley, Tosh, & Wailer (hardcover) ... Book
WW Norton, 2011. New Copy ... $4.99 26.95
A very well-written book – especially in comparison to the fluffy Bob Marley books that usually litter the market – and a much deeper look at the role of The Wailers, and the triangulated sense of character that hung between Marley, Peter Tosh, and Bunny Wailer! The book gives equal power to each individual – and uses them as different roles for masculinity in Jamaican culture, and global expression as well – as writer Colin Grant traces the early years of the group, the later fame of both Marley and Tosh, and the path to security and obscurity followed by Bunny. Grant's sense of time and place are quite vivid – and really get past the cliches of other writing on Marley – and the book is 305 pages, hardcover, with a fair bit of black and white images. Book

Grupo BatuqueOle Ola – Futebol Bonito! – The Brazilian Soundtrack To The Beautiful Game ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2006. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A Brazilian tribute to football – but one that's given a distinctly London twist – as core rhythms by Wilson Das Neves, Dom Um Romao, and others are mixed up and augmented by Da Lata, Zero dB, Roc Hunter, Fauna Flash, and Osunlade! The album's got a depth and compelling quality that goes far beyond other records by Grupo Batuque – as tightly-played percussion riffs are mixed with sound effects, crowd noise, and commentary from football games – all in a rich sonic tapestry that goes past simple samba or batucada! The whole thing's almost like an audio document to the greatness of the sport and its importance in Brazilian culture – but thanks to the globe-spanning efforts of Far Out, the added production help should help settle more than a few disputes at the World Cup! Titles include "Torcida Do Flamengo", "E Ruim (Zero dB rmx)", "Ole Ola", "Isto E Samb", "Na Cancao Do Samba", "Ole Ola (Fauna Flash rmx)", "Na Batida Do Agogo (Osunlade rmx)", and "Berimbal Capoeira (Da Lata rmx)". A key history lesson for those who thought that pot culture in music only started with Cypress Hill – a weird sound play album originally issued by Elektra Records in the early 70s! The album's the brainchild of producer/director Ron Jacobs – who put the whole thing together with a feel that's almost like freeform FM radio from the left end of the dial at the time – little bits and sketches that are often satiric stabs at the mainstream, although delivered with a lot more wit than we'd expect from the average pothead! The whole thing's kind of like Free To Be You & Me for the stoner crowd – and titles include "Getting Hung-Up", "Creativity", "Funniness", "Physical Effects", "The History Of Marijuana", and "Eating Food". EMI, 1984. Near Mint- ... $24.99
Thumping dancefloor grooves with giant hooks from Jellybean Benitez – his Wotupski !?! set from '84! On one level, this is a pretty fascinating snapshot of a style with roots in underground disco, hip hop and club music that was evolving into massive crossover pop – you might remember that some chick called Madonna sings on "Sidewalk Talk" here. Interesting pop culture status aside, we're surprised at how strongly this holds up on a purely creative level after all this time. It's worth it alone for the b-boy classic "The Mexican" – an update of Babe Ruth's "The Mexican" – and other tracks include "Compromise", "Sidewalk Talk", "Dancing On The Fire" and "Was Dog Doughnut". The rooftop graffitti cover is nice too, with classic styles by SEEN UA! LP, Vinyl record album

The second album from this unusual ensemble – a group who maybe take the "dark" in their name a bit more strongly than the "jazz" – and who work here without any real connection to the culture of Kilimanjaro at all! Yet despite that distinction, there's definitely something here that got the group a fair bit of attention when the set was released – a very deep, layered sound that almost makes it impossible to tell where one instrument starts and the next begins – or what's in the blend of sounds at all – almost as if the 4AD aesthetic from years past was pushed into the moodier territory of the downtempo generation, but with the richness of a soundtrack too. A beautiful look at the American love of the exotic –a book that's overflowing with full color-images and a wealth of tiki-styled history! This book is way more than just another fluff piece on postwar tiki culture – and instead digs deep into the US fascination with Pacific culture – tracing its roots to exploratory efforts of the 19th Century, then showing the huge explosion in the 20th – as America began to annex Hawaii, and both WWII and the budding airline industry allowed US citizens to travel to the islands, and bring a fair bit of its culture back home! The presentation is in the best Taschen mode – glossy pages, filled with beautiful images and surprisingly strong writing, too – in chapters that cover topics that look at the Hawaiian music craze, tiki cocktail bars, exotic dining in America, exotica style, and celebrities' role in island culture – plus lots lots more. Luaka Bop, 1970s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
Insanely great sounds from the legendary Tim Maia – easily the most soulful singer in 70s Brazil, and an artist with a heck of a strong ear for funk, too! The music here is an incredible hybrid of American soul and Brazilian elements – especially since some lyrics are in English – and the grooves are often mixed together in a sound that's nice and fuzzy around the edges, with some slight psychedelic elements that makes the cuts a perfect fit for this Luaka Bop series! Yet Tim Maia's hardly a guy who can easily fit into any easy slot or series – because as you'll hear on this set, he's got a vibe that's all his own – a really wonderful approach that's different even from some of his hippest contemporaries in Brazil – and which has gone onto have influence on countless other generations of singers and musicians – including his nephew Ed Motta. The package is great – a real visual tribute to the sounds within – and titles include "Que Beleza", "Ela Partiu", "Do Leme Ao Pontal", "Brother Father Mother Sister", "Quer Queira Quer Nao Queira", "Let's Have A Ball Tonight", "I Don't Care", "The Dance Is Over", "Rational Culture", "You Don't Know What I Know", and "Nobody Can Live Forever". One of Miriam Makeba's hippest albums of all time – a set that marked the end of her association with Reprise Records, and her fame in the crossover American scene of the 60s – and for good reason, too – as the whole thing's brimming over with much more righteous energy than ever before! Makeba's really letting loose here – not content to bring South African custom and culture to the overseas mainstream, but instead stepping forth with a new sense of mission and message – one that even comes through when she takes on some more familiar tunes by other artists at the time! The set features production from Lewis Merenstein, who'd done Astral Weeks – and the sound here is so different than Miriam's records from just a few years before – thanks also in part to the great backing arranged by George Butcher, which adds in lots of bass, percussion, and horns that take Miriam into a hipper 70s Afro Soul mode. A unique little record – unlike anything else we can think of – one that combines the hippest side of the 60s soul jazz vibe with that decade's popular love of spy culture too! The set's mostly instrumental, but has a few dropped-in vocals that really open things up – and the whole thing was cut in Chicago for Mercury by this group that included Clarence Perry on tenor, Richard McCrea on organ, and legendary soul composer and producer Ed Townsend on piano! Townsend produced the whole session, and he also does some great spooky narration on the track "Do The Monkey With James" – a spy-themed dancefloor track that's totally great! Most of the set's a batch of soul-oriented instrumentals with a spy/James Bond vibe – including a few Bond themes, plus nice originals like "Goldfinger's Got the Blues", "James Goes to Soulville", and "James Out Of Sight". The whole thing's totally groovy, with a great mod soul instrumental feel. A fantastic presentation of this 70s classic from Renaissance – a set that also feels as if it's got a sound that goes back much further in the past – maybe not to the flowering of culture after the middle ages, but maybe more to the folk rock world of the 60s! The group have some of the styles of the early 70s British acid folk generation – right down to superb lead vocals from Annie Haslam, a singer to rival Sandy Denny in terms of subtle expression and gentle emotion. Author Richard Williams does a great job of exploring this crucial piece of jazz – not only detailing the important session and musical moment that led to the record's creation, but also looking it its influence for decades after its release – not just in jazz, but in American popular culture as well! Hardcover book is 309 pages. Book

VariousBeach Club – 14 Soul, Jazz & Bar Grooves Presented By Diplomats Of Soul ... CD
Expansion (UK), 2013. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
Hardly the chillout set you might expect from the cover – no beachy cliches at all – and instead, a killer batch of underground soul and club tracks, put together in a way that really represents some of the most exciting musical growth of the past few years! There's a classic sound at the core, but all of these tracks are definitely contemporary too – breaking out with a fresh approach to rhythms and production, while still holding onto a really old school love of strong vocals and live instrumentation too! Tracks include "This Is What You Are (Opolopo rmx)" by Mario Biondi, "Girl U Need A Change Of Mind" by IG Culture, "Far Away (Layabouts voc mix)" by Lady Alma, "Tribe 3 (edit)" by Rhythm Of Elements, "The Great I Am" by Muzart, "Saat Itu Juga (vox version)" by Andezzz, "Changes (Lanu ext mix)" by Kylie Auldist, "Take It Higher" by Taliwa, "Little Sunflower" by Jazz Invaders with Lonnie Smith, and "From Here On" by Diplomats Of Soul. Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 30s/1940s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $22.99 29.99
A really cool set that looks at the rise of late 50s beatnik culture from a variety of different styles – not just the jazz and poetry that marked that scene's biggest contribution to music – but also the wealth of modes that inspired those years too! The 3CD package features a stunning 57 titles in all – and begins in the late 30s with hard-edged small combo work and jive-heavy vocal tracks – then runs past WWII to include some bebop, R&B, and very cool vocal numbers – before moving into Greenwich Village classic sounds in a mix of spoken word, jazz poetry, and even a bit of folk! The booklet is filled with notes and history in both English and French – and titles include "The Beat Generation" by Bob McFadden, "High School Drag" by Phillipa Fallon, "The Nazz" by Lord Buckley, "American Haikus" by Jack Kerouac & Al Cohn, "Route 66" by Bobby Troup, "Gator Tail (part 2)" by Cootie Williams, "Rock & Roll" by Wild Bill Moore, "Killin Jive" by Cats & The Fiddle, "You'se A Viper" by Stuff Smith, "Scrapple From The Apple" by Les Double Six, "Kookie's Mad Pad" by Ed Byrnes, "So What" by Eddie Jefferson, "Howl" by Allen Ginsberg, "I Sing Of Olaf" by Roger Steffans, "Say Man" by Bo Diddley, "Shulie A Bop" by Sarah Vaughan, and "The Rocket Ship Show" by Jocko Henderson. Polydor, 1984. Near Mint- ... $34.99
Sure, maybe Breakin wasn't the most accurate, most faithful portrait of life on the streets in the early 80s – but the film was a great breakout moment for hip hop culture in the mainstream, and also helped sell the new style with a heavy dose of soul! The real stars here are Ollie & Jerry – who deliver two of the album's best tracks – "Breakin There's No Stoppin Us" and "Showdown" – but the set's also got some other great 80s soul and funk tracks – including "Ain't Nobody" by Rufus & Chaka Khan, "Freakshow On The Dance Floor" by The Bar-Kays, the smooth club hit "99 1/2" by Carol Lynn Townes, "Body Work" by Hot Streak, "Street People" by Fire Fox, "Heart Of The Beat" by 3V, and "Reckless" by Chris "The Glove" Taylor – featuring vocals by a young Ice T! VariousFire Over Babylon – Dread, Peace & Conscious Sounds At Studio One ... CD
Studio One/Soul Jazz (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $19.99 26.99
Some of the most righteous sounds ever recorded at the legendary Studio One label in Jamaica – 70s music that marks a time when the company was moving into some of the more thoughtful, meaningful lyrics that rose to prominence during the rasta generation! The shift is no surprise, given that Bob Marley once recorded for Studio One – but by the time of these tracks, Marley had risen to international fame on Island Records – helping to open the door for a huge new audience for the message and the music, which Studio One was only happy to address with great tracks like this! The set's every bit as great as the other collections from the label on Soul Jazz – handled with equally thoughtful track selection and detailed notes, to support an 18 track set that includes "Sufferation" by Trevor Clarke, "I Am A Revolutionist" by Freddie McGregor, "Burning In My Soul" by The Silvertones, "Mr Jolly Man" by Horace Andy, "Things & Time" by Wailing Souls, "Serious Thing" by The Gladiators, "So Many Problems" by The Viceroys, "Inner Peace" by Pablove Black, "Rock But Don't Fall" by Wailing Souls, "Jah Jah Fire" by Devon Russell, and "Give Me Back Me Language & Me Culture" by Im & Count Ossie.
