Errol Brown & The RevolutionariesCulture Dub/Medley Dub (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Doctor Bird (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99
Two classic albums of dub from Erroll Brown – both maybe a bit more obscure than his classics of the time, but which also show the real depths of his talents! Culture Dub is a batch of instrumental dubs of songs from Culture – who were then riding high after their Two Sevens Clash album – taken here by Brown into very moody, very abstract territory – a stretched-out, spacey sound that has all sorts of cool guitar and keyboard elements bubbling amidst the murky basslines and drums. Titles include "Everyday Love Dub", "Skillful Dub", "Iron Sharp Dub", "Freedom Jam", "Deep Root Dub", and "Harder Than The Rest Dub". Medley Dub is a very different record overall – one that reworks older recordings from Sonia Pottinger's catalog of the late 60s and early 70s – rocksteady modes taken into dub territory, with really amazing results! You'll hear momentary echoes of the old amidst the soundclash of the new – and titles include "Revelation Of Dub", "Trinity Of Dub", "Tip Top Affair", "Engineer's Special", "Natty Dutty Dub", and "Swing & Dub". 2CD set features 24 more bonus tracks – Culture-related tracks that include "Work On dub", "Dog A Nyam Dub", "Freedom Rock", "Natty Dub", and "Jah Rastafari (version)" – and 15 other Brown dubs from the late 70s – including "Merry Go Round Version", "In The Park Version", "Lick Version", "Blue Bird Dub", "Revolutionary Version", "Stormy Dub", and "Road Hog". Annie Cohen Solal/Paul Goldberger/Robert GottliebNew York Mid Century – Post War Capitol Of Culture 1945 to 1965 (hardcover) ... Book
Thames & Hudson (UK), 2014. New Copy ... $6.99 35.00
A stunningly vivid portrait of New York in the postwar years – a time when the city's already-strong hold on American culture was taken to its apex – as the city became home to some of the most important artists, actors, writers, and creative forces of the generation! The book is filled with amazing photographs – hundreds of images, in both black and white and color, laid out alongside equally rich text, in three large sections that look at the visual arts, the performing arts, and architecture and design. Modern visual artists get especially strong placement in the book, as does the groundbreaking architecture in the city during the 50s – but there's also some great sections on dance, theater, and nightlife too – and the whole thing's more than large enough to cover everything at a reasonably strong level. The layout and design of the book are great – and the choice of images is superb – and the whole thing is super-heavy, hardcover, and a whopping 400 pages in all. Book

Jinx & Mr C (James O'Connor & Damen Corrado)Compliments Of Chicagohoodz – Chicago Street Gang Art & Culture ... Book
Feral House, 2019. New Copy ... $16.99 22.95
A really amazing look at the secret art and language of gang culture in Chicago – the most detailed book we've ever seen to examine the words on the street during the 60s, 70s, and 80s! Chicago had a very special sort of language to communicate gang activity and culture during the heyday of the city's big gangs – graffiti that was filled with codes and symbols, and which really predated major street art in New York – plus a network of patches, business cards, and other objects that conveyed a special sort of numerology and message – sometimes harmless words about parties and events, sometimes essential details about the criminal underworld. This book is fascinating on so many different levels – not just a prurient true crime story, but instead a very detailed examination of gang culture in terms of linguistics, visual media, and representation. Yet all that detail doesn't make things too dry, either – as the book is overflowing with photos and images – examples of street graffiti, countless business cards, patches, portraits, and more – even some maps at the back. The whole thing is a massive 375 pages, full color throughout, and very beautifully done! Book

Mango, 1980. Near Mint- ... $24.99
Bass Culture, but way more than that too – as the album is a classic kernel of wisdom from the great Linton Kwesi Johnson – done up in the mix of spoken and sung passages that always made his records so unique! Dennis Bovell handles the backing and mixing – with lots of nice dubby touches that also bring some slight currents of postpunk moodiness to the record – one of the factors that helped LKJ cross over to so many non-reggae audiences at the time. Titles include "Bass Culture", "Reggae Fi Peach", "Di Black Petty Booshwah", "Inglan Is A Bitch", "Loraine", and "Two Sides Of Silence". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousDJ Amir Presents Buena Music Y Cultura – Good Music & Culture – Rare Latin Sounds From Across The Americas ... LP
BBE (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99 28.99
One of the most fantastic collections we've ever heard from DJ Amir – a set that may well blow away his classic On/Off Track sets for the depth of its spirit and feeling! Amir's been well-known as a crate digger for many years – and while digging for funk, soul, and hip hop on the New York scene, he's also come across plenty of rare Latin nuggets – not familiar salsa or crossover Latin Soul, but instead some much deeper numbers that show just how much spirit and imagination the music had when it was at its best! Most of the numbers here are from late 60s and 70s vintage – and many have this jazzy energy that goes way past just simple grooves, and which instead features the richer colors and complicated motions of some of Eddie Palmieri's music, especially in the 70s. Titles include the previously unreleased "Salsa (parts 1 & 2)" by Fito Foster – plus "Picadillo" by La Moderna Of New York, "Bomba" by Dax Pacem, "Paranoia" by Wayne Gorbea Y Su Conjunto Salsa, "Rogelio Tiene La Salsa" by Chino Y Su Conjunto Melao, "Yo No Bailo Con Juana" by Cortijo Y Kako, "Vete De Aqui" by Joey Aponte, "Asi Asi Descarga" by Mike Hernandez Y Su Sonora Casino, "Tembelque" by Louie Colon, "El Ritmo Soledad" by Orchestra Soledad, and "El Pulpo" by Joey Pastrana. The story of Soul Train, brought to us by an author we trust more than most when it comes to music writing! Nelson George has already given us great books on Motown, hip hop, James Brown, and the decline of rhythm and blues – and he does an equally great job here with his examination of Soul Train – mixing rich details from the show's long history, with his own interpretation of its role in American culture, and its lasting impact upon both TV, and the representation of African-American music in the mainstream. Culture Power 45, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The second full length compilation LP from the Chicago-centric (but not exclusive) Culture Power 45 collective – and not a simple assortment of solo or group tracks, but filled with heavy collaborative tracks by an incredible roster – including Dug Infinite, Thaione Davis, Primeridian, DJ Spinna, Vic Spencer, Infinito 2017, Radius, 9th Scientist and many more! The theme for the record is straight up "dope beats & rhymes", but with such a depth of talent on board, vocal and production complexity is part and parcel here, and all in service of driving, hard hitting tracks. Chicago hip hop history in the making! 24 tracks including "Rise Of The Ebony Gold" by Donald Mayhem, Vast Aire & Infinito 2017, "Middleman" by Iomos Marad, Thaione Davis & Profound, "The Foundation (Interlude)" by DJ Spinna, "The Sun" by Mordecai The Foul, "Think Black" by Truth Universal, ML7102, Rakaa Iriscience & Mr. Skurge, "Every Memory Pt 1" by Infinito 2017, "Crates" by Vic Spencer, "Makara (Interlude)" by Radius, "Throw Stones" by 9th Scientist and more. ChangeLove 4 Love ... LP
Original Disco Culture (Italy), 2018. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
Wonderful new work from Change – the international soul combo who made some classic cuts back at the start of the 80s – still sounding great all these many years later, but in a slightly different way! The balance between all elements here is fantastic – as the music has all the best parts of the group's earlier music, but also updates the sound a bit – in the way that a combo like Incognito or Brand New Heavies were updating older soul music back in the 90s, by grabbing all the strongest parts of the past, and fusing them into a fresh lean groove. The songs are upbeat, positive, and full of the kind of catchy hooks that Change always did so well – and titles include "Friends", "Make Me Go Cray", "How Will We", "Too Late", "Living Monday", "Love 4 Love", "All My Life", and "Hit Or Miss". Also includes some remix versions of older tracks – "Searching (Figo Sound version)", "Oh What A Feeling (Figo Sound version)", "You'll Always Be A Part Of Me (Figo Sound version)", and "It's A Girl's Affair (Figo Sound version)". Flamin GrooviesFlamingo (hot pink vinyl pressing) ... LP
Kama Sutra/Culture Factory, 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $23.99 24.98
One of the finest moments ever from The Flamin Groovies – a set that's awash in 50s rock and roll influences, yet filtered through the heady late 60s San Francisco scene – making for a mix that's completely compelling throughout, and unlike anything else we can think of! The Groovies might initially seem like retro-rockers, yet they've got this sharp edge that makes their music more of a commentary on rock and roll, and its roots as well – uttered beautifully at a time when so many others were falling into excess, but also done without any of the "roots" cliches that others were embracing in a much clunkier way! It's hard to sum up adequately, but the record's almost a leap forward from Gene Vincent over 60s psyche – but on its way to the rough edges embraced by the UK punk scene in years to come – kind of that odd space that the Modern Lovers hit with their Kim Fowley recordings, but much more rocking overall. Most numbers are originals from vocalist Roy Loney – and titles include "Comin After Me", "Headin For The Texas Border", "Second Cousin", "Childhood's End", "Jailbait", and "She's Falling Apart". ✨✧ Frederick KnightI've Been Lonely For So Long (limited edition LP sleeve pressing) ... CD
Stax/Culture Factory (France), 1973. New Copy ... $4.99 14.98
A lasting 70s classic from Frederick Knight – easily his best-remembered album, thanks to the legendary title track! The set's got a slow-burning, deeply soulful feel all the way through – one that takes Knight's high-end vocals, and backs them with some bottom-burning instrumentation that certainly owes something to the Muscle Shoals sound, but which comes off in a way that's a bit more organic, and less in the trademark style of the time. Organ features heavily on most numbers – matching Knight's vocals with a bubbling energy that cooks things up nicely – and tracks include the classic "I've Been Lonely For So Long" , plus "Trouble", "Now That I've Found You", "This Is My Song Of Love To You", "I Let Me Chance Go By", and "Your Love's All Over Me". Ike TurnerEdge (limited edition LP sleeve pressing) ... CD
Fantasy/Culture Factory (France), 1980. New Copy ... $4.99 14.98
One of the last Ike Turner albums to contain lead vocals by Tina – a set from the start of the 80s, issued right before Tina hit that huge solo career on her own! Tina's vocals come in early and are in very much in fine form – more in the mode she'd use on records to come than her sound back in the day, but lacking nothing at all in terms of her phrasing – even when Ike and the group take on tunes by some of the pair's contemporaries like Bill Withers, Shirley Caesar, and Elton John! Side two has Ike stepping into the vocal spotlight – a shift that may well have come from the rift between the two at the time – but his appearance is actually a great thing, and maybe creates a bit of freshness as he works here to front the Home Grown Funk band. Those tunes have more of an 80s funk approach – often with heavy basslines – and Ike tunes include "Lum Dum", "Party Vibes", "No Other Woman", and "I Can't Believe" – while Tina titles include "Lean On Me", "Use Me", "Shame Shame Shame", "Philadelphia Freedom", and "Only Women Bleed". ✨✧ NeakKwesbaar ... LP
Culture Power 45, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the finer albums to come out of the Chicago independent hip hop landscape in a while! Kwesbaar is Afrikaans for vulnerable, and if Neak's lyrics are the kind of soul-baring honest to own up to the title, his rhyme style and production are strong, confident and seriously soulful. Production-wise, Kwesbaar leans on jazz, funk and soul influences in ways that are bit reminiscent of Soulquarians era hip hip in mood and scope – raw and real rhymes over production that really blends blueprint hip hip with live instrumentation. It's also got straightforward and purposeful vibe that feels very uniquely Chicago. Guests include Rita J, Rashid Hadee, Taylor Iman, Caroline Davis, Kenneth Leftridge and Sam Trump on horns, DJ RTST on cuts and others. Includes "Elevation Everything", "In My Life", "Cashed Up", "Do It For Love" feat Rita J, "WYTAM", "War" feat Rashid Hadee, "Gold" feat Peter Jericho, "Slander II", "Kiss The Ring" feat GLC, "Fight", "Dreamer's Sadness" with Taylor Iman and more. Dee AlexanderWild Is The Wind ... CD
Blujazz, 2008. New Copy ... $11.99 15.99
Amazing work from singer Dee Alexander – a wonderfully soulful album of jazz vocals, and one that we'd rank right up there with our favorite records by Carmen Lundy or Dee Dee Bridgewater! Dee's a singer who's worked in Chicago for years, but we've honestly only begun to appreciate her talents of late – possibly because she's really hipped up her sound a lot over the years, picking up a range of spiritual, soulful influences that push her music to a whole new level – as you might have heard on her recent collaboration with IG Culture. The music on the set is wonderful too – work by Chicago players we know, but have never heard this strongly before – grooving in modal and soulful modes behind Dee's great vocals, with a lineup that includes Miguel De La Cerna and Michael Logan on piano, Harrison Bankhead on bass, and Leon Joyce on drums and percussion. Titles include versions of two tunes by AACM member Henry Huff – "Live" and "You & I" – plus the Alexander originals "Long Road Ahead", "Rossingnol", "Butterfly", and "C U On The Other Side". CD

Many of the chapter titles refer to key musical texts, but then quickly extrapolate from those moments – soaring out from "I Am The Blackgold Of The Sun", "The Greta Garbo Home For Wayward Boys & Girls", and "Painting With Light" – and looking at psychedelia on both sides of the Atlantic in the 60s, with lots of surprising insights along the way. Despite a very vivid cover, the book itself is all text, no images – a hefty 638 pages, hardcover, and a very deep read! Book

Julie CokerLife In The Limelight – Lagos Disco & Itsekiri Highlife 1976 to 1981 ... CD
Kalita, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $13.99
Classic tracks from the short-but-strong music career of Julie Coker – a huge figure in Nigerian culture, both for her work onscreen and off! Coker recorded a handful of records at the end of the 70s – right at the height of her career – and the tracks here are from two of the three from the time – the albums Tomorrow and Ere Yon. Ere Yon is a very compelling take on more traditional modes of the time – a bit highlife, but often nicely stripped-down, and with these occasional keyboard parts that give a cool spacey sound to the whole thing – a mode that works perfectly with Coker's strong vocal range. Kalita, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy Gatefold ... $25.99
The music on Tomorrow is from a few years later, and has a warmer, clubbier vibe – a bit more of the Lagos disco promised in the title, but again handled in a way that's still very unique. Elvis CostelloUnfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink (hardcover) ... Book
Penguin Books, 2015. New Copy ... $5.99 30.00
A wonderfully-written autobiography from Elvis Costello – a book that's not only completely illuminating for any fan of his music, but which stands quite strongly on his own, even if you're not a longtime fan of the man himself! The volume almost sets a new standard for musician autobiographies – as Costello approaches the project with the sort of zeal he's brought to his new "second role" in popular culture over the past few decades – that of being as much of a raconteur as a singer, as much as a spotlight on other genius as he is a genius himself – always handled with the sense of pointed prose and honesty you'd find in his music. The book is huge – and filled with black and white photos too. A heavy 672 pages, and hardcover. Book

Patrick CowleyMechanical Fantasy Box – The Homoerotic Journal Of Patrick Cowley (softcover) ... Book
Dark Entries, 2019. New Copy ... $19.99 24.99
A book that's very much what it's promised – the homoerotic journal of dance music and soundtrack composer Patrick Cowley – a key figure on the San Francisco scene before he left this planet in the early 80s! The book is pure sex, and nothing but – save, perhaps, for some essays that frame the work at the start, and about two dozen illustrations by artist Gwenael Rattke – although those are pretty sexy too. Yet the work is a wonderful look into a side of the San Francisco scene in the years before AIDS – penned with the sense of freedom and spontaneity that paint a very different picture of the city than you'll find in mainstream culture. The book offers up chronological accounts of Cowley's sexual encounters – but they're also penned with a sense of poetry in most entries, which prevents them from being pure pornography – more thoughtful erotica, with an increasing level of quality as the years go on – similar to the evolution in Cowley's music. In addition to the black and white images by Rattke, the book also features cards and posters from some of the older bathhouses and gay clubs in San Francisco – making for some nice historical framing of the work. Book

Julee CruiseFloating Into The Night ... CD
Warner, 1989. Used ... $2.99
A haunting debut from singer Julee Cruise – collaborating with filmmaker/songwriter/producer David Lynch and his Twin Peaks soundtrack composer Angelo Badalamenti! The album was underappreciated at the time, perhaps because its loose connection to Lynch's Twin Peaks and Blue Velvet was too big of a pop culture hurdle for critical minds to clear, but it really deserves a reassessment. The mix of nostalgic 50s ballroom pop and ethereal modern dream pop is unique, kind of otherworldly, and Julee's gorgeous vocals carry it over with style to spare. Wierd and beautiful – there's really nothing else like it! Warner, 1978. Very Good ... $24.99
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah, Y- Y- Y- Y- Y- Y- Y-eah, this is one of best art rock albums of all time – the Eno produced full length debut of Devo – the caustic, sarcastic and fun soundtrack to society's devolution! There's nothing we don't love about Devo at this point, from their unprecedented use of multimedia, to the hard to pull off fusion of sneering social and pop culture satire with good humored fun, and that's just the conceptual stuff. The songs are original and inimitably great, too, with those squeeling synth punk dynamics. Tracks include (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" (best rock cover ever?) Edge Of DaybreakEyes Of Love ... LP
Numero, 1979. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A really beautiful album of harmony soul – and a set that we'd already love for its music, even if the group didn't have an interesting story! Edge Of Daybreak are part of a small sub-culture of 70s soul groups – an ensemble who existed behind prison bars, like Power Of Attorney or The Escorts – and like both of those groups, they've got an amazingly strong sound – one that goes way beyond their incarcerated status, and which should have made them (like the other two) worthy of greater attention in the outside world! The material was recorded in 1979, but it's got a fragile early 70s vibe – maybe because that was the last time these guys heard work in the mainstream – and the voices come together with a style that's proud, but quite heartbreaking at times too – a bit like The Whatnauts on their best ballad material. If you dig harmony soul, you'll find plenty to love here – especially if you like early 70s material from Philly and New Jersey – and don't even worry about the behind bars gimmick, because the record has way more to offer than that! Titles include "Let Us", "Eyes Of Love", "I Wanna Dance With You", "Bring Me Down", "Edge Of Daybreak", and "Your Destiny". LP, Vinyl record album

Pop culture baggage aside, pretty mesmerizing stuff from Ye! Ye the album, if his persona hasn't turned you off by now, is a compelling effort from what we'll dub Kanye's "puzzle period" – this strange era of his recorded output that's a long time since his creative and popular breakthroughs, past the more challenging and complex work circa My Beautiful Dark Twisted Family that enchanted critics and polarized fans, and just got more polarizing from there. He's a riddle, wrapped in an enigma, hiding behind a Twitter handle but this might be very well be pop art genius...we'll see how it holds up over time! Pretty stripped down compared to some of his denser productions the past few years, and lyrically daunting, but oddly hypnotic. Luaka Bop, 1970s. New Copy 2LP ... $22.99 23.98
Insanely great sounds from the legendary Tim Maia – easily the most soulful singer in 70s Brazil, and an artist with a heck of a strong ear for funk, too! The music here is an incredible hybrid of American soul and Brazilian elements – especially since some lyrics are in English – and the grooves are often mixed together in a sound that's nice and fuzzy around the edges, with some slight psychedelic elements that makes the cuts a perfect fit for this Luaka Bop series! Yet Tim Maia's hardly a guy who can easily fit into any easy slot or series – because as you'll hear on this set, he's got a vibe that's all his own – a really wonderful approach that's different even from some of his hippest contemporaries in Brazil – and which has gone onto have influence on countless other generations of singers and musicians – including his nephew Ed Motta. The package is great – a real visual tribute to the sounds within – and titles include "Que Beleza", "Ela Partiu", "Do Leme Ao Pontal", "Brother Father Mother Sister", "Quer Queira Quer Nao Queira", "Let's Have A Ball Tonight", "I Don't Care", "The Dance Is Over", "Rational Culture", "You Don't Know What I Know", and "Nobody Can Live Forever". Recorded at The University Of Utah, it's a wonderful synthesis of the eastern and otherwise globally-inspired instrumentation Miller is beloved for, and the western jazz styles of his earlier years playing behind Don Ellis, Eddie Harris & others. Recorded with players from the university's jazz ensembles, along with several numbers with the Mike Johnson Quartet, it came a time when Miller was becoming so well educated in Far Eastern, Middle Eastern and Asian music and culture, and was already such a seasoned American jazz player himself, it's really stunning this set is such a rare one! The Moon Express are a group shrouded in mystery – whose one claim to fame was an appearance on a Monkees TV special, but who also featured leadership from Paul Arnold – kind of a hip background figure on the west coast scene, best known for the album Inner Sounds Of The Id on RCA in 1967! Here, Arnold brings together sitars and percussion, violin and tablas, echoey voices and lovely lyricism – all with a vibe that feels like a hippie daydream slowly tipping into nightmare. Vocals are by the fantastic Tsvia – an Israeli singer with a range that really increases the power of the record – especially when conjoined with the male spoken vocals. Beat (Italy), Late 60s. New Copy ... $18.99
An unusual television soundtrack from the great Piero Piccioni – scored for a program on the Islam religion, but served up in a mix of modes that show the maestro at his moodiest! Piero can sometimes be very playful – but here, he's more concerned with darker, subtler tones – music that certainly respects the topic matter, but also has plenty of Italian orchestral touches in play as well! Piccioni mixes woodwinds in ways that have these really deep, textural elements – balanced by his own gentle work on organ – kind of a flowing sense of sonic wave, sometimes touched with styles that might ring out as "eastern", other times more in a space of their own – and completely evocative throughout. At moments, there's almost a 4AD-like style of soundscape – blending across borders effortlessly, and creating a musical culture of its own – and the CD features nearly 80 minutes of music, with 23 bonus tracks added to the 5 from the original album. The massive third album from Run DMC – made at the top of their game – an pivotal effort that brought them to peak popularity and helped break hip hop in a huge way in the pop culture landscape! Part of the album's strength is its guitar-heavy sound on some of the grooves – produced by Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons with a classic early Def Jam vibe, in the same manner that helped the Beastie Boys get their records in the hands of folks who'd never buy hip hop otherwise! That sound comes to culmination on the album's hit collaboration with Aerosmith on a remake of "Walk This Way", resulting in the commercial breakthrough, but the real triumph here is the increased complexity in both the lyricism, and the way Jam Master Jay serves up their beats – which makes for a stone classic all the way through, on tracks that include "Peter Piper", "It's Tricky", "My Adidas", "Proud To Be Black", "You Be Illin'", and more. A really unique little record – an album of original songs based on older tradition, and one that interweaves elements of Portuguese culture with deeper roots of Angolan music! Lilly Tchiumba penned all the tracks herself, and sings in the Angolan language of Kimbundu – but there's a mix of percussion, guitar, and soaring vocals that echoes strongly with rootsier Brazilian, Cuban, and Haitian styles too – maybe in part because the Monitor label did such a wonderful job of recording the songs, and giving them this righteous, powerful vibe that still holds up strongly over the years! And by all of that, we almost mean that there's this sort of trans-global power to the whole record – one that moves beyond just a regional expression of culture, and past any sort of basic ethnographic mode – a lot like the Songs Of Protest album by Zelia Barbosa, also on the Monitor label. Heidi VogelTurn Up The Quiet ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2013. Used ... $9.99
A great solo set from Heidi Vogel – a vocalist you may know from previous work with the Cinematic Orchestra – stepping out here in a bossa-heavy set that's a perfect fit for the Far Out label! Heidi's style is deeper and more expressive than before – not a voice as part of larger instrumental backdrops, but a lyrical presence first and foremost – often supported with lighter instrumentation that echoes an older bossa era – with strong use of acoustic guitar, light percussion, piano, bass, and cello – all with very melancholy shades of sound. There's a light glow to the record that's really beautiful – mellow, yet soulful enough to have some subtle power – and the set also features guest vocals on two tracks by Cleveland Watkiss, and guest piano on two other numbers by Austin Peralta. Titles include a nice version of Joao Donato's "The Frog" – plus "Inutil Paisagem", "Chelsea Bridge", "Love Dance", "Bonita", "Juazeiro", "Black Narcissus", "Copacabana", and "Modinha". CD also fatures three remix numbers – "Black Narcissus (Cinematic Orchestra rmx)", "Black Narcissus (Emanative rmx)", and "Turn Up The Quiet (IG Culture rmx)". CD

GAD (Poland), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $9.99
Hard-swinging trad jazz from the Polish scene of the postwar years – in a style that was as revolutionary to the Soviet-controlled culture as its later modern jazz and fusion moments! The group here is led by pianist Zygmunt Wichary, and works with a frenzied spirit that's a lot more intense than most American trad recorded during the same period – maybe this urgency to get the message across, or just the kind of outside presence that graced some of the American jazz world in its early years. The group also features Piotr Kott on cornet, Bruno Buczek on trombone, Bronislaw Gesikowski on guitar, and Miroslaw Wojcik on clarinet – and there's also a female singer on a few tracks too. Titles include "Sing Sing Sing", "There'll Be Some Changes Made", "Somebody Stole My Gal", "Struttin With Some Barbecue", "Miala Baba Koguta", "Diana", "Piano Blues", "Memphis Blues", "Talizman", "Tema Jazzowy", "Parafraza Na Tematy Z Opery Bizeta", "Fokstrot", and "Czarna Kawa". Various50 Ans De Saravah ... CD
Saravah (Japan), 2016. Used ... $18.99
A beautiful tribute to the legendary Saravah label – one that features all-new recordings of some of the label's groundbreaking classics – all handled by a younger generation who definitely get the spirit right! Songs are by some of the greats who recorded for Saravah in the 60s and 70s – Brigitte Fontaine, Pierre Barouh, Francis Lai, Jack Treese, Jean-Roger Causimmon, and others – and some of the numbers are done in styles that really recall the original records, while others take off in ways that are more contemporary – but still have that amazing genre-busting, culture-crossing style that's always made Saravah so great! Titles include "13 Jours Au Japon" by Sheena Ringo, "Tell Me" by Bears Of Legend, "La Bicyclette" by Bertrand Belin, "Samba Saravah" by Severin, "Ode To Maffen" by Camelia Jordana, "C'est Normal" by Francois Morel & Yolande Moreau, "Cet Enfant Que Je T'Avais Fait" by Kahimi Kari & Albin De La Simone, and "Decroche Moi La Terre" by Bastien Lallemant. Polydor/Cherry Pop (UK), 1984. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99
A pair of 80s street soul soundtracks – Breakin and Breakin 2 – reissued here with the title as Breakdance, which is how they appeared in the UK! Maybe Breakin wasn't the most accurate, most faithful portrait of life on the streets in the early 80s – but the film was a great breakout moment for hip hop culture in the mainstream, and also helped sell the new style with a heavy dose of soul! The real stars here are Ollie & Jerry – who deliver two of the album's best tracks – "Breakin There's No Stoppin Us" and "Showdown" – but the set's also got some other great 80s soul and funk tracks – including "Ain't Nobody" by Rufus & Chaka Khan, "Freakshow On The Dance Floor" by The Bar-Kays, the smooth club hit "99 1/2" by Carol Lynn Townes, "Body Work" by Hot Streak, "Street People" by Fire Fox, "Heart Of The Beat" by 3V, and "Reckless" by Chris "The Glove" Taylor – featuring vocals by a young Ice T! Breakin 2 is maybe an even better soundtrack than the first entry in the series – and not just because it gave the world the term "electric boogaloo"! The team of Ollie & Jerry seem almost fully in charge here – and in addition to creating some great tracks of their own, they also produce some other beat box gems that are equally great – nestled here alongside some well-chosen street soul groovers too! Titles include "Electric Boogaloo" and "When I C U" by Ollie & Jerry – plus "Stylin Profilin" and "Radiotron" by Firefox, "Din Daa Daa" by George Kranz, "Gotta Have The Money" by Steve Donn, "Believe In The Beat" by Carol Lynn Townes, "I Don't Want To Come Down" by Mark Scott, "See It Out" by Midway, and "Oye Mamacita" by Rags & Riches. A wonderful snapshot of the late 60s/early 70s underground rock scene in Vancouver! The original album was put together as a benefit for the Cool Aid House – a shelter for homeless youth in Vancouver, and no doubt a haven for hippie culture at the time. The album was and is a vital document of the scene – touching on the freedom-seeking vibe of the time in the lyricism, but free of hippie rock cliche –it's great stuff! Sunny and loose harmonies, deft acoustic and electric instrumentation, creative and inviting music from Spring, Route Nine, Mock Duck, Papa Bear's Medicine Show, Black Snake, Mock Duck and others. A really wonderful collection – an important re-investigation of the unusual mix of sounds and styles on the New York scene in the years after disco – a time when funk, punk, hip hop, and art were all colliding at once – providing a really fresh antidote to the staid sounds of Studio 54! The "disco" in the title should be taken lightly – as these cuts didn't play at the slick uptown dance spots – but were instead the soundtrack for the cool spots happening downtown, as the previous loft culture morphed into clubs, in this very special blend of the energy of CBGB and the underground soulful dancefloors. Flying Dutchman/Soul Brother (UK), Early 70s. New Copy ... $9.99
Funky soul, righteous jazz, and hip production made the Flying Dutchman label one of the greatest imprints of the early 70s! The label was the brainchild of producer Bob Thiele, and was a post-60s project to bring together unheard voices in African American culture – recording heavily in a number of genres that included jazz, funk, soul, and Latin – cutting records that were destined to become instant classics, most of which are still pretty darn influential today! This set does a great job of starting to unpack the wealth of work on Flying Dutchman – bringing together tracks by a few familiar acts, and other lesser-known artists, a few who have rarely been reissued. Titles include "Carnavalito" and "Maria Domingas" by Gato Barbieri, "Mama" and "Chains Of Love" by Esther Marrow", "Baja Bossa" by Oliver Nelson, "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get" by Pretty Purdie, "Save The Children" and "I Think I'll Call It Morning" by Gil Scott Heron, "The Creator Has A Master Plan" by Louis Armstrong & Leon Thomas, "Echoes" by Leon Thomas, and "Footprints" and "Astral Travelin" by Lonnie Liston Smith. An amazing set on Soundway that not only captures Highlife On The Move from the early 50s to mid 60s, it's essentially the roots of the music and dancefloor culture of some of greatest Ghanaian and Nigerian grooves to come! The historical relevance of the material is monumental to say the least – not only showing the diverse impact of calypso, mambo and jazz music that was being combined in the nascent-to-prime years of highlife, from Lagos to London – but it also includes what's thought to be the first ever recordings by Fela Kuti, with his Highlife Rakers combo. It's compiled by Markus Coester, who also penned the thick, insightful booklet, and true to Soundway tradition, it's impeccably packaged, and the sound quality is pristine as can be. 38 tracks in all, with "Highlife No 5" by Ginger Folorunso Johnson & His Afro-Cuban Band, "Son Of Africa" by Kwamalah Quaye Sextetto Africana, "Niger Mambo" by Bobby Benson & His Combo, "Afro Mood" by Chris Ajilo & His Cubanos, "Obaa Amponsa Pandogo" by Black Star Band, "Donaldo's Samba" by Afro Rhythm Kings, "Marabi Dance" by Afro Rhythm Kings, "Maggie" by Jhn Santos Martins & Zeal Onya & His Band, "Ghana, Forward Forever" by Lord Ganda & Rupert Nurse's Calypso Band, "Highlife Comes To Europe" by Rans Boi's African Highlife Band, "Uwa D' Arejere" by West African Rhythm Brothers, "Eyo Mano Mi" by T Odueso's Akesan Highlifers, "Wa Sise" by Willie Payne & The Starlite Tempos, "Anyin Gan Na" by Victor Ola-Iya & His Cool Cats and more – plus "Fela's Special" and "Aigana" by Fela Ransome-Kuti & His Highlife Rakers. A mindblowing discovery of music from northern Brazil – not the more familiar sounds that you might know from Rio or Sao Paulo, but much rootsier grooves that were first forged up at the northern city of Belem! The city is a gateway to the Amazon, and also a crossroads too – blessed with a thriving economy for most of the 20th Century, which led to countless clubs and other entertainment venues – and the development of some unique Afro-Brazilian strands that were created from the city's criss-crossing of cultures! Almost all the tracks here are highly percussive – tight and fast, with the kind of energy you might hear in a batucada jam, but fused into a smaller combo mode – delivered in styles that came to be known as siria, carimbo, and lambada – the last of which is the earlier, better version, and not the trashy pop take that was forced on the global market at the end of the 80s. As always with Analog Africa, the package is way more than just a compilation of music – as the notes are fantastic, and get at the rich history and culture – with a 24 page booklet filled with notes, photos, and other images. A stone winner all the way through, and one of the most ear-opening compilations we've heard in awhile – with titles that include "Vamos Farrear" by Pinduca, "Carimbo Da Pimenta" by Messias Holanda", "A Misturada" by Os Muiraquitans, "Praia Do Algodoal" by Os Quentes De Terra Alta, "Lundun Da Yaya" by Grupo Da Pesada, "Maruda" by O Conjunto De Orlando Pereira, "Xango" by Magalhaes E Sua Guitarra, "Lambada Da Baleia" by Viera E Su Conjunto, "Meu Barquinho" by Janjao, and "Mambo Assanhado" by Verequete E O Conjunto Uirapuru. A much-needed look at the massive amount of music recorded in Kenya during the 70s and 80s – an incredibly fertile time for local culture in the nation – and a time when it seemed like there was a great new groove coming out nearly every day! The work here really rivals the best of the classic Soundway compilations – especially their strong surveys of Ghana and Nigeria, with an ear for grooves that go way beyond the usual mainstream sounds of world music! There's more than enough grit and funk here to please any fan of American funk and soul – but the sounds also go way way deeper, too – and echo not only a long Kenyan cultural heritage, but also reflect the unique place the nation had at the crossroads of East Africa – a site that often made the scene especially vibrant in these years. The presentation is superb – with detailed notes and wonderful imagery that includes vintage label scans – and titles include "Mu Africa" by The Rift Valley Brothers, "Wendo Ti Mbia" by Gatanga Boys Band, "Ware Wa" by The Loi Toki Tok, "Sweet Sweet Mbombo" by Orchestre Baba National, "Cha Umheja" by Afro 70, "See Serere" by Sophia Ben & The Eagles Lupopo, "Mutumia Muriu" by The Lulus Band, "Nzaumi" by Ndalani 77 Brothers, "Teresia" by Huruma Boys Band, and "Week End" by Afro 70. A totally smoking set of tracks from the Somali scene of the 70s – and maybe the coolest East African music we've heard from the time! The material here is all from a small label that was spun off an appliance store – and the imprint had a really great ear for recording these acts in ways that bring out all their most unusual elements, while still holding onto the strong groove at the bottom! Half the set features work by the Sharero Band – a really great group who have a wicked way with an organ line, so that the instrument has all these sharp edges and odd tunings – which create a cool exotic vibe over the more forward-moving grooves – on titles that include "Sharero", "Caashooy", and "Yaan Cuskanaa". The set features more music from Magool – a group with instrumentation that's maybe more Eastern, in ways that reflect the Islamic culture in Mogadishu, but the tracks also have a strongly percussive vibe too – which makes for a nice match alongside the vocals, on titles "Waly Sita" and "Shimbir Yohou". Last up is a track from guitarist Ahmed Rabsha and Hibbo Nuura – great vocal interplay with a lively vibe, on the striking "Bohol You". LP, Vinyl record album

A second heavy dose of sounds from the Panamanian scene of the 60s and 70s – a long-overdue companion to the previous volume of the series on Soundway, filled with rare gems that are finally getting their first exposure to the world outside the isthmus! A really amazing criss-cross of musical modes from the island of Cape Verde – a nation that already gave the world many musical hybrids over the years, but really knocked things out of the park with the electrified funana movement in the 90s! The sounds here are ancient at the core – rootsy percussion and accordion, used in ways that echo South American styles from decades past – but the grooves are quicker, and electrified by beats, keyboards, and other more contemporary elements – so that the music is really set on fire, and burns with a really unexpected sense of urgency! The bpm count on most tracks is pretty high – which makes the deft work of the accordionists even more amazing – and as always with the Ostinato label, the whole thing comes with some wonderfully detailed notes on the music and culture. Nearly every track is a classic – and all the artists are ones we've supported for years on their own reissues – and together, the tracks sound wonderful, especially when given the full sort of Soul Jazz presentation with great notes and other details. Titles include "Exchange (part 2)" by Rashied Ali & Frank Lowe, "Space Jungle Funk" by Oneness Of Juju, "Damballa" by The Pharoahs, "Whitey On The Moon" by Gil Scott Heron, "Brown Rice" by Don Cherry, "Work It Out" by Sarah Webster Fabio, "Celestial Blues" by Gary Bartz, "Beneficent" by Tribe, "Sweet Power Your Embrace" by James Mason, "Kitty Bey" by Byron Morris & Unity, "Nappy Dugout" by Funkadelic, "Theme De Yoyo" by Art Ensemble Of Chicago, and "Welcome To The Party" by Har-You Percussion Group. VariousSpiritual Jazz 8 – Japan Parts 1 & 2 – Esoteric, Mocal & Progressive Jazz From Japan 1961 to 1983 ... CD
Jazzman (UK), 1960s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99
The biggest volume so far in the Spiritual Jazz series from Jazzman Records – and maybe the best as well! This fantastic collection looks at the huge legacy of spiritual jazz that flowed from the Japanese scene in the postwar years – sounds that had their initial expression around the same time that the modal jazz of Miles and Coltrane was bursting forth in the US, but which also too so many twists and turns of its own – with some very strong influences along the way from Japanese folk and culture! Much of this music was initially restricted only to release on Japanese labels – and even later, as some of the artists attained fame, the global circulation of their music only happened with more commercial recordings. These tracks are the real deal – and together, they represent a huge legacy of jazz that's as appealing and essential as American work from labels like Impulse or Strata East – or European sounds on Saba/MPS. Most tracks are quite long, with flowing grooves – and although the players are reaching out, things are never too free or avant – just filled with a searing sense of soul. Jazzman got strong help on the project from the Deep Jazz Reality series – so the album's got that stamp of approval too – and the whole thing's in one of the most beautiful packages we've ever seen from the label! Titles include "Kumo No Ito" by Mitsuaki Kanno, "East Plants" by Takeo Moriyama, "Positive & Negative" by Minoru Muraoka, "Under Construction" by Koichi Matsukaze, "Ragam Sinthubairavi" by Sadao Watanabe & Charlie Mariano, "Sun In The East" by New Direction For The Arts, "Footprint" by Shungo Sawada, "My Favorite Things" by Tadao Hayashi, "Kikazaru" by Keitaro Miho, "Watarase" by Takeo Moriyama, "Babylonia Wind" by Kiyoshi Sugimoto, "Whispering Weeds" by Yoshio Ikeda, "Kisarazu Zinku" by Toshiko Akioshi, "Sacriment" by Tohru Aizawa, "Spanish Flower" by Tee & Company, and "Scarborough Fair" by Four Units. VariousStudio One Freedom Sounds – Studio One In The 60s ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 22.99
Pure gold from the earliest years of the Studio One label – great tracks that really sum up the special sort of genius that the label helped allow! As you might guess from the "freedom sounds" in the title, the late 60s marked a new period of independent action in Jamaica – a strong sense of regional identity, and new pride in the local talent and its wellspring of new ideas – all coming forth in a huge wave of culture that was captured by Studio One and its various imprints! The approach here is not unlike all the small indie soul labels that were cropping up in the US at the same time – and as the notes display, most of these tracks were issued on 7" singles, with the kind of local punch and importance of rare soul 45s during the same decade up north. Some of these cuts are nicely rough around the edges – but in the best way possible – and titles include "Sunday Coming" by Alton Ellis, "Rain Or Shine" by Don Drummond, "Love Me Girl" by Leroy & Rocky, "Destiny" by Bob Marley & The Wailers, "Psychedelic Rock" by Ernest Ranglin, "Spread Satin" by Skatalites, "Hi Jack" by Jackie Mittoo, "Reggae In The Grass" by Roland Alphonso, "Contemplating Mind" by Barrington Spence, "Timo Oh" by Mr Foundation, "I Am What I Am" by Jackie Opel, and "I Am The Toughest" by Peter Tosh. Titan/Numero, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 4LP (reissue)... $45.99 59.99
Seminal sounds from the Kansas City scene of the late 70s – a wealth of power pop work from the tiny Titan label – all brought together in one of the most brilliant packages we've ever seen from the Numero Group! Like most Numero releases, there's a great story behind this set – a tale of bounced checks, interstate culture, and a cadre of great groups who would have been huge – had they recorded this music out on the coast! Titan's way more than just a tiny label that managed to put out some killer singles back in the day – it's a pop powerhouse that shows just how much under-discovered genius the American scene can hold – music that really helps break down simple understandings of late 70s rock, especially when presented this well. The 2LP set features 51 tracks – 10 more than the CD version (!) – and a really great oversize 24 page booklet – a great counterpart to Numero's Yellow Pills set – filled with notes on Titan, a complete discography, and a wealth of wonderful photos that really make this unique scene come alive. Titles include "Shark" and "Real Life Saver" by Gary Charlson, "No Way Baby" and "I Wanna Be" by Arlis, "It's Your Heart Tonight" and "Radio Heart" by Secrets, "Please Change Your Mind" and "Baby It's You" by Boys, "Rock N Roll Song" and "Radio City" by Bobby Sky, "The Last Song" by JP McClain & The Intruders, "Cry" and "Didn't Like It Anyway" by Gems, "Coit Tower" and "Drink A Toast" by Millionaire At Midnight, and "I Think About You" by Scott McCarl. ✨✧ Dee AlexanderWild Is The Wind ... CD
Blujazz, 2008. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
CD

✨✧ Chicago Afrobeat Project feat Tony Allen & OthersWhat Goes Up – Remixed ... LP
Future Rootz, 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great criss-crossing of sounds and styles – one that brings together African roots, contemporary funk, and a great array of dancefloor modes served up by the various producers on the project! The record reminds us a lot of some of our favorite French work in this mode from the start of the century – particularly the Africanism series – and as with some of those records, legendary drummer Tony Allen is on hand, lending his strong arm on the kit to the grooves of the Chicago Afrobeat Project! Most tracks are nice and long – which makes the album like getting a whole stack of 12" singles – and titles include "Cut The Infection (Sol Power all stars rmx)", "I No Know (Jose Marquez Afro-House no go die rmx)", "Afro Party (Ron Trent dub)", "No Bad News (Maga Bo rmx)", "Sunday Song (Afroqbano rmx)", "White Rhino (Sound Culture rmx)", and "Afro Party (Kevin Ford rmx)". ✨✧ Jimmy G & The TackheadsFederation Of The Tackheads ... LP
Capitol, 1985. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An obscure early 80s electro effort from George Clinton – all the more surprising, given how much he pretended to hate hip hop! At some level, Jimmy G & The Tackheads are mostly an 80s groove outfit – using lots of bass and keys to pop and lock the groove, while throwing in plenty of wikki-wikki instrumental touches to complicate things. And at another level, there's even a bit of Go-Go inspiration in the mix – particularly in the use of percussion on a few tracks, and the overall party feel of the set. But given the name of the group, and the kind of "street" feel of the album's graphics (which includes a lot of photos and images of early 80s street hustler tackhead culture), the album's also trying for a definite appeal to the old school crowd – with a look that's trying for a lot more cred than Clinton's own work of the time. Jimmy G's actually Jimmy Giles, a relation of Clinton – but from the sound of things, George and co-producer Steve Washington are firmly in control – on tracks that include "Clockwork", "I Want Your Daughter", "Family Funk", "Lies", and "Slingshot". Trojan (UK), 1973. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Great early work by Bob Marley & The Wailers – some of it produced by the legendary Lee Perry, too! Some of the tunes are early takes on later famous versions – but in a way, they're actually more definitive – in that they tie Marley back to the rich Kingston culture, instead of making him some beatific figure who emerged to greatness on his own. The rougher edge is a great contrast to Marley during the Island years – as you'll hear on tunes that include "Lively Up Yourself","Small Axe", "Duppy Conqueror", "African Herbsman", "Sun Is Shining", "Keep On Moving", "Don't Rock The Boat", and "Kaya". ✨✧ Perry & The HarmonicsIntrigue With Soul ... LP
Mercury, Mid 60s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A unique little record – unlike anything else we can think of – one that combines the hippest side of the 60s soul jazz vibe with that decade's popular love of spy culture too! The set's mostly instrumental, but has a few dropped-in vocals that really open things up – and the whole thing was cut in Chicago for Mercury by this group that included Clarence Perry on tenor, Richard McCrea on organ, and legendary soul composer and producer Ed Townsend on piano! Townsend produced the whole session, and he also does some great spooky narration on the track "Do The Monkey With James" – a spy-themed dancefloor track that's totally great! Most of the set's a batch of soul-oriented instrumentals with a spy/James Bond vibe – including a few Bond themes, plus nice originals like "Goldfinger's Got the Blues", "James Goes to Soulville", and "James Out Of Sight". The whole thing's totally groovy, with a great mod soul instrumental feel. It's a very unique record, and we still can't figure out why Mercury released it – but who cares, since the whole thing's great! LP, Vinyl record album

The classic self-titled LP that changed hip hop (and much of modern pop) forever! There's little we can add to the canon for this record. Run DMC ushered in a new era in contemporary urban culture, a harder hitting style of rap the bust out of the inner cities and into consciousness of an entire generation. You can literally call this album revolutionary, something only a handful of artists can ever hope to achieve. Amazing! ✨✧ VariousPour Me A Grog – The Funana Revolt in 1990s Cabo Verde (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Ostinato (UK), Late 90s. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Titles include "Pom Um Grogu" by Peps Love, "Mo Na Mama" by Bitori E Fefe Di Calbicera, "Rabidanti" by Orlando Pantera, "Nha Boi" by Tchota Suari E Chando Gracioso, "Rei Di Tabanka" by Ferro Gaita, "Mulato Ferrera" by Etalvino Preta, and "Nha Lutcha" by Avelino E Orlando Pantera.
