✨✧ VariousDriftless Dreamers – In Cuca Country ... LP
Numero, 1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A surprisingly strong collection of country cuts from a very unusual scene – material recorded for the tiny Cuca Records label in Wisconsin – a company who was more likely to open their doors to just about anyone, than they were to carefully pick who got to record in their studio! Yet because of that approach, Cuca was able to capture some fantastic sounds that would have otherwise been lost to more commercial concerns – music that here represents an underground of country singers and late rockabilly acts from the scene in southern Wisconsin – all artists with the kind of twang and subject matter you'd be much more likely to discover down in Tennessee! As usual with Numero Group, the record is as musically great as it is culturally compelling – put together with plenty of care, and a stunning set list that includes "Happy Don't Last Forever" by Nancy Lee Jordan, "Little Hero" by Dixie Drifter, "Cardinal" by John D Curnow, "Six Foot Down" by Gene Ski & The Troubadours, "There's A River" by Sam Podnay, "Hello Houston" by Johnny Madrid, "Wanderer" by The Lavenders, "Challenge" by Larry Phillipson, "Run Little Girl" by Harrison Two, "Heaven Help The Working Girl" by Janet Kaye, "Trouble Sweet Trouble" by Curley Fields & The Kentuckians, and "When I See You" by Rog Winters & The Plainsmen. ChieftonesNew Smooth & Different Sound (white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Cuca/Numero, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $21.99 26.99
A really cool Canadian group from the 60s – an all-native lineup of members from the Tsimshian Nation – but working here in a raw garagey style that's totally great! The drums are lean and powerful, guitar follows suit, and vocals often have a surprisingly charming quality – tuneful, and harmonized with a nice sort of sweetness at times. The group famously recorded on Wisconsin's powerhouse Cuca label, home to some great raw singles back in the day – and this set brings together their rare 45 for that label, plus rare demos and unissued material – in their first-ever full length set, with titles that include "Don't Let It Bother You", "Do Lord", "I Won't Be Around", "The Sun Is Shining", "Ebony Eyes", "You Don't Need Me Anymore", "Don't You Leave Me Behind", "I Shouldn't Have Did What I Done", and "I Need Your Lovin". Fuzzy psychedelia from Milwaukee combo The Corporation! The set mixes some buzzing guitar and heavy drums with some off kilter elements like flute, organ & piano – and some pretty groovy lead and harmony vocals. Titles include "You Make Me Feel Good", "Sitting By The Sea", "Heard The News", "I Do Love Her", "Yes I Know", "Get On My Swing" and "Walking Along". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mon RiveraMon Y Sus Trombones (aka Que Gente Avirigua) ... LP
Alegre/Vaya, 1976. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
70s issue of this classic – a great blend of Puerto Rican roots and some of the more sophisticated modes going down in the New York scene of the 60s – and a classic pre-salsa album from Mon Rivera! Rivera's got a small combo here who represent the hippest Alegre players of the time – both Charlie and Eddie Palmeri on piano, Mark Weinstein on trombone, and the legendary Kako on timbales – all backing up Mon with a sound that's rootsy, but which still has a fair bit of jazz as well. Styles include jazzy mambo and the plebochanga, a style that combines the plena and charanga – and overall, the album's got a really bouncy approach to the grooves – piano and percussion carrying most of the work, as vocals and horns come in over the top to sort things out a bit! Titles include "La Plechanga De Trabalengua", "Monina", "Una Plena", "Como Esta Pita", "En Casa De Pepe", and "La Cuca". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original 70s pressing – a great copy!)

✨✧ Pupi LegarretaPupi Y Su Charanga – Gonzalo, Pacheco & Pupi ... LP
Vaya, 1975. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Violinist Pupi Legarreta was one of the key players of the earlier charanga scene – and here, he gets a great update on his older sound in a sweet 70s session put together by Johnny Pacheco! The style of the grooves hasn't changed much from the early 60s, but the music also shows the growing sophistication that had come into Latin rhythms over the years – and the whole thing brims over with this great sense of pride, and a strong merging of tradition and new identity. Pacheco sings and plays guiro – and the group also features great work on flute from Gonzalo Fernandez – on titles that include "Pacheo Y Masucci", "Bommaye", "Guapacha Bururu", "Barco Perdido", "Yo Soy El Guguanco", and "Cuca La Loca". ✨✧ Willie RosarioBoogaloo & Guaguanco ... LP
Atco, 1968. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A wicked batch of Latin groovers from Willie Rosario – one that takes all the energy of his rare indie sides from the 60s, and fuses it with the tight approach to Latin Soul being hipped up by Atlantic at the time! The whole thing's great, and has a vibe that's very lively overall – with tracks that run the gamut from mambo jazz to boogaloo – and titles that include "Mi Chamaco", "Viento En Popa", "Cuca La Loca", "Light & Sweet", "Stop & Go", and "Watusi Boogaloo". ✨✧ Fania All-StarsFania All Stars Live ... LP
Fania, 1978. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great little live album from The Fania All Stars – one that's recorded a few years after their classic sets at the Cheetah, Red Garter, and Yankee Stadium – but which still burns with the same sort of energy! The groove here has a bit more of a straighter salsa approach – as you'd guess from the date – but the record still features the cream of the crop of the New York scene, coming together with a masterful sense of power and togetherness! Vocalsits include Justo Belancourt, Celia Cruz, Cheo Feliciano, and Ismael Rivera – and titles include "Felicitaciones", "Ahora Si", "Publico Corriente", "Toro Mata", "El Nazareno", "Cucala", and "Yo Soy La Candela". ✨✧ Chico Buarque & Maria BethaniaChico Buarque & Maria Bethania Ao Vivo ... LP
Philips (Brazil), 1975. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic illustration of the live music tradition on Brazil – one that really arose on records during the 60s, and blossomed strongly on 70s records like this – which feel almost more like an event than a recorded document! The concert features a magnificent meeting of Chico Buarque and Maria Bethania – both very strong talents on their own, balanced in this really great way amidst larger backings from Maestro Gaya – duetting on tunes that really turn into something special from their performance – never a challenge of egos, but instead a wonderful folding of strong ideals. Terra Trio provide the rhythms – and most numbers are Buarque originals – with titles that include "Flor Da Idade", "Vai Levando", "Bem Querer", "Noite Dos Mascarados", "Tanto Mar", "Gota D'Agua", "Com Acucar E Com Afeto", and "Sem Fantasia". ✨✧ Grateful DeadFrom The Mars Hotel ... LP
Grateful Dead, 1974. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
One of the finer Dead studio albums of the mid 70s for sure – managing to catch a bit of the spontaneous energy that made them such a vaunted live band on some tunes, really delivering on the wry yet easygoing songcraft they don't really get enough credit for, and even some cool facets of their far-reaching sound they captured better in the studio than they ever did on stage. Those include the lightly lush ballad-y "China Doll" and the eccentric sounds that weave in and out of the standout "Unbroken Chain", but the whole thing is solid! Other cuts include "US Blues", "Loose Lucy", "Scarlet Begonias", "Pride Of Cucamonga", "Money Money" & "Ship Of Fools". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Roberto RoenaRoberto Roena Y Su Apollo Sound 6 ... LP
International, 1974. Very Good Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A real breakthrough album from Roberto Roena and his Apollo Sound combo – a record that showed the world that this scrappy little group could stand head to head with the giants of the 70s salsa years! As on other records, there's a strongly percussive vibe throughout – bongos from Roena, plus timbales, conga, and other percussion – all topped by a great horn section that features two trumpets, tenor, trombone, and flute – all of whom hit some wonderfully jazzy moments at time, filling in the set with some great tropical shades and colors! Vocals are by Tito Cruz and Sammy Gonzalez, and a number of well placed percussion and horn solos on just about every track. Titles include "Traicion", "Cucarachita Cucarachon", "En Mis Rosales", "Que Se Sepa", "Ese Soy Yo", and "Herencia Rumbera". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousSaoco Vol 1 – The Bomba & Plena Explosion In Puerto Rico 1954 to 1966 ... LP
Vampi Soul (Spain), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
A legendary look at the sounds of Puerto Rico – one that brings together tracks from a time when the island was really hopping with fresh new rhythms, served up by a host of young, soon to be important leaders – music that's every bit as powerful as work coming from Havana and New York at the time! The rhythms here are slightly different – with some bomba and plena thrown into the mix, served up with plenty of percussion too – all at a level that would have a huge influence on Latin music for decades to come! The package features detailed notes that provide the sort of background and information that some of the leaner Latin reissues of previous years never had – and titles include "Cortaron a Elena" by Cortijo (as Canario & Su Grupo con Raful), "En Orbita" by Baltazar Carrero, "Habla Cuembre" by Los Caballeros Del Ritmo, "El Plenero" by Mon Rivera Y Su Orquesta, "Dejalo Que Suba" by by Cortijo (as Canario & Su Grupo con Raful), "Belinda" by Chivirico, "Cucala" by Cortijo Y Su Combo con Ismael Rivera, and "Ron Con Coco" by Mon Rivera Y Su Orquesta. 30 tracks in all! ✨✧ Pierre CavalliUna Vitamina Faz Favor ... CD
Sonorama (Germany), Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sweet bossa-tinged grooves from the 70s – but recorded in Switzerland, not Brazil! Guitarist Pierre Cavalli had plenty of experience with the scene in Brazil during the late 60s – and for these 70s sides, he really tries to recreate the best sounds of Rio from a few years back – but often mixes in some of his own offbeat twists and turns, including some of the hipper undercurrents he picked up while working on recordings for MPS! The tunes are less straight bossa than some great Germanic imagining of bossa nova – with slightly tripping turns from Pierre on his guitar, cool wordless vocals in a few spots, sweet Fender Rhodes, and arrangements from Bruno Spoerri and Angel Gatti that are mighty nice. The set's easily one of the best in Sonorama's reissue series – and titles include "Possarinhos", "Cachaca", "Violao Em Foco", "Pao De Acucar", "Transmissao Mutavel", "Tempo In Tempo", "Tecidos", and "Alegria".
