Probe 10There Is A Universe (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Lion, 1975. Used ... $11.99
A very groovy record from a very unique band – a homegrown set by an obscure Pennsylvania combo from the 70s – a group who were equally schooled in jazz fusion and progressive rock! Probe 10 are a rock group at their core, but they've also drank heavily from the brew of 70s Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return To Forever, and electric Miles Davis – and use all those elements to forge these really creative explorations in music – tracks that stretch out with some great lines on Fender Rhodes, and also feature solos on trumpet, flute, and guitar – mixed with vocals that are sometimes surprisingly poetic. The best passages are instrumental – and these guys definitely have a King Crimson inspiration, too, although maybe without the chops – and titles include "There Is A Universe", "Invasion Of The Mallandroids", "Intergalactic Crossfire", "To Improvise A Dream", and "Galaxy Five". CD features 5 more bonus tracks – including "The Playing Of The Game (parts 1 & 2)" and "Enchanted Mountain (parts 1 & 2)". CD

✨✧ Ahmad JamalSteppin Out With A Dream ... LP
20th Century, 1976. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Unlike Ahmad's other LPs for 20th Century, this one's a fairly straight set of tracks, with (mostly) acoustic piano (although he does play Fender Rhodes on one track). He's backed by a nice combo that features Calvin Keys on guitar, Frank Gant on drums, John Hurd on bass, and Selden Newton on assorted percussion. The tracks are long, with a spiritual vibe that sounds like some of the Walter Bishop records on Black Jazz. The set includes the nice electric track "Tuscon", plus "Crossfire" and "Handicapper". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a small split on the top seam, but looks great overall.)

✨✧ Piero UmilianiIl Corpo – Original Soundtrack (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Schema (Italy), 1974. New Copy Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sweetly funky and very slinky – this is one of the best early 70s scores by the great Italian composer Piero Umiliani! The record has lots of bubbling electric piano, rumbling electric basslines, warm acoustic percussion, and moody wordless vocals. At some level, the album sounds a lot like the contemporaneous work by the great Italian Fender Rhodes combo Crossfire – but it's also filled with a spacey madness that could only come from the pen of Umiliani! One of the best of the recent Easy Tempo reissues – and very nicely put together, with a consistent sound throughout! Titles include "The Body", "Tidal Stream", "Chaser", "White Sand", "In The End", "Free Life", "Stream", and "Dusken". Schema CD version includes 7 bonus alternate takes – with 21 tracks in all! CD
