Thelonious MonkCriss-Cross ... CD
Columbia, 1963. Used ... $3.99
A title and cover that beautifully illustrate the sharp-edged power of the Thelonious Monk quartet on Columbia – and a wonderful place to start if you're just digging Thelonious' music! The record is similar to the best of Monk's Columbia sides – in that it revisits older tunes and themes from previous years, but in a way that's often much better than the original recordings – thanks to some incredible energy between group members Charlie Rouse on tenor, John Ore on bass, and Frankie Dunlop on drums! Rouse's sharp horn is easily a real bnous here – as it dances beautifully with Monk's piano lines and creates a magical sense of juxtaposition and fluidity, but is still nicely earthy and soulful as well! Titles include "Criss Cross", "Think Of One", "Eronel", "Hackensack", "Rhythm-a-Ning", and "Crepuscule With Nellie". This CD bonus tracks on the the original album: "Coming On The Hudson","Tea For Two" and "Eronel". CD

✨✧ Thelonious MonkComplete Columbia Studio Albums (Monk's Dream/Criss Cross/It's Monk's Time/Monk/Straight No Chaser/Underground) (6CD set) ... CD
Columbia, Mid 60s. Used 6 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing sounds from Thelonious Monk – some of his greatest albums ever, cut during the same legendary stretch of Columbia Records jazz that also included work by Miles Davis and Dave Brubeck! In the early 60s, Monk came to the label as a fully-formed pioneer on the forefront of jazz – a key modernist who'd already transformed the sound of the music in the 40s and 50s – given a surprisingly great amount of freedom and respect by Columbia – who also helped him to focus his powers, too! All of the tracks here are by Monk's key Quartet with Charlie Rouse on tenor – an amazing player who really gave voice to all the ideas that Thelonious had been trying out with John Coltrane and Johnny Griffin a few years before – and delivered the results with a surprising degree of soul, too. Bassist John Ore and drummer Frankie Dunlop really help swing the group too – and most records feature this core lineup, slightly augmented on a few tracks – such as on the album Underground, where Jon Hendricks delivers a bit of vocals. Package features the full albums Monk's Dream, Criss Cross, It's Monk's Time, Monk, Underground, and Straight No Chaser – all packaged in tiny LP-styled sleeves, in a cool box! CD

David BinneyGlimpse Of The Eternal ... CD
Criss Cross (Netherlands), 2022. New Copy ... $15.99 18.99
David Binney is one of those generous saxophonists who seem to often let the role of the rest of the group shape their records as much as the vision and solos of the leader – and that's definitely the case here, on a wonderful date that draws a lot from the presence of pianist Craig Taborn in the quartet! In fact, all group members are great – Eivind Opsik on bass and Dan Weiss on drums – and there's a very cohesive vibe to the way they all come together that's similar to when a really well-matched piano trio hits the studio – often moving past just a setting for solos, and instead coming up with a sense of richness that resonates with all four corners of the square. Many of the tunes are originals by Binney, mixed in with some surprising numbers from other sources – and titles include "Group", "Our Place", "Vibe Changer", "Craig", "Dave", "Group", and "Ambivalence". Opus 5Swing On This ... CD
Criss Cross (Netherlands), 2022. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
A brilliant set from this long-running quintet of all-star players – each leaders on their own, but coming together here with seamless energy that lets us know that the musicians have all put their egos at the door in order to work together strongly as a unit! It's been a number of years since the last album from Opus 5, but those years have marked a real maturation in the players – a deepening of their individual sounds, which can be heard in both the solos and in the way they gracefully share the space with each other – in a continued exploration of the fresh material that makes their albums so great. The quintet features Seamus Blake on tenor, Alex Sipiagin on trumpet, David Kikoski on piano and Fender Rhodes, Boris Kozlov on bass, and Donald Edwards on drums – and titles include "The Great Divide", "In Case You Missed It", "Pythagoras", "Moonbay", "Fermata", and "Sight Vision". Mark TurnerYam Yam (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Criss Cross/Anagram, 1994. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $31.99 35.99
A really wonderful early album from tenorist Mark Turner – a set that's got all those dark moments and sharp edges of his later recordings, but in a setting that's nicely warm at times – and which has Turner coming across with a bit more soul! There's a special sort of mojo in the record – darkness mixed with redemption, as Turner carves his way over beautiful lines from the rest of the group – a quintet that features Kurt Rosenwinkel on guitar, Brad Mehldau on piano, Larry Grenadier on bass, and Jorge Rossy on drums. Melhdau is especially nice next to Turner here – and the group are also joined by additional tenorists Seamus Black and Terence Dean on the title "Zurich". Other titles include "Isolation", "Subtle Tragedy", "Yam Yam", "Cubism", "Tune Number One", and a version of "Moment's Notice". LP, Vinyl record album

Maybe one of the most beautiful records we've ever heard from drummer Donald Edwards – a set that states its position strongly with the title, then features a suite of tracks that work together perfectly to deliver Donald's message! The record has a power and focus that's wonderful – as Edwards leads the group through his own compositions with a soaring, soulful quality that we're not sure we've ever heard him express this strongly – getting superb performances out of a combo that includes Anthony Wonsey on piano, Ben Wolfe on bass, Abraham Burton on tenor, and David Gilmore on guitar. Titles include "Black", "Brown", "Tan", "Finding Beauty", "Little Hopes", and "Hurricane Sophia". CD

✨✧ Misha TsiganovMisha's Wishes ... CD
Criss Cross (Netherlands), 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Beautiful work from pianist Misha Tsiganov – not a newcomer to jazz, but a player who's really seemed to find his way forward in recent years – with a lyrical, soulful sound that's very much his own – and which really seems to bring out the best here in his all-star lineup! Many of the tunes on the set are Misha's own, and they're wonderful – bubbling over with a sense of color that's first delivered by his own work on piano and Fender Rhodes, then carried further on the trumpet of Alex Sipiagin and tenor of Seamus Blake – both of whom are really at their best in the setting. Rhythm work is wonderful too – understatedly suited to Tsiganov's approach to music, and delivered by Boris Kozlov on bass and Donald Edwards on drums. Titles include "Lost In Her Eyes", "Are You With Me", "Give Me Five", "Hope & Despair", "Fire Horse", and "Misha's Wishes". CD

Chris Greene QuartetMusic Appreciation ... CD
Single Malt, 2014. Used 2 CDs ... $12.99
A double-length set from Chicago tenorist Chris Greene – but a package that may well not be enough to hold all the new ideas in his music! We've really watched Chris grow strongly over the past few years – and with this wonderfully well-crafted, rich-voiced album, he steps forward to a level that rivals some of the much bigger saxophone talents recording these days for labels like High Note or Criss Cross! Greene's always had a deep tone in his horns – one that draws from a Chicago tradition, but inflects it with some of the more contemporary modes of later players on the scene – like Eric Alexander, who Chris might be approaching with this set. The range of rhythms and song styles is great – never gimmicky, but expanding past standard expectations – so that Greene's group is playing Coltrane and Wayne Shorter one minute, then Martin Denny the next, then Ed Motta, then a huge batch of their own great compositions as well. Instrumentation is simple – Chris on saxes, plus piano or keyboards, bass, and drums – but there's some wide voices here that really make the album compelling – and the longer length very necessary to contain it all. Titles include "Firecracker", "Deluge", "Day of Honor", "Divers", "Solution", "Papuera", "Clean & Clear", "Institutional Samba", and "Nostalgia In Times Square". CD

Blue Note, Early 50s. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 25.99
Wicked early work from Milt Jackson – a record that's got a lot more of an edge than some of his later work with the Modern Jazz Quartet – a near-perfect modernist bop sound that's every bit the best side of Blue Note in the early 50s! The package brings together material from a few different sessions – some originally on 10" LPs – and the core of the material features Jackson in the company of pianist Thelonious Monk, on some tracks that also feature Sahib Shihab on alto sax! John Lewis plays piano on another batch of tracks that are essentially the early MJQ lineup, but with Lou Donaldson on alto too – so they swing with a bit more soul than you might expect. Titles include "Bag's Groove", "On The Scene", "Willow Weep For Me", "Criss Cross", "Evidence", "Tahiti", "Misterioso", "Four In One", and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Steve LacyStraight Horn Of Steve Lacy ... CD
Candid (UK), 1960. Used ... $8.99
The only thing "straight" about Steve Lacy's horn is its shape – as the soprano sax here is used in some extremely inventive and modern ways, especially for the date of the session! We don't think we're going out on a limb to say Lacy is one of the foremost melodic improvisors of his time, and easily one of the most talented soprano players too – and his early date as a leader shows both his forward looking involvement with the avant garde (he'd played with Cecil Taylor just before this date and does a couple of his compositions here) and a career-long fascination with Thelonious Monk. Although the group here is piano-less – with Charles Davis on baritone sax, John Ore on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – there's a definite Monk-like edge to many of the numbers, carried off especially by the sharp turns in Lacy's horn! Titles include "Criss Cross", "Air", "Donna Lee", "Louise", "Played Twice", and "Inrospection". CD

Excellent organ groovers from the great Jimmy McGriff! The set pulls together some fantastic tracks from Jimmy's years at Veep, Sue, Solid State, and Capitol – including many great short funky cuts that haven't really shown up on other reissues before. The fidelity of the set is way way better than other reissues – and the CD is filled with hard wailing Hammond groovers that will blow your mind! Jimmy's touch on the keys was amazing back in these days – filled with loads of straight jazz fire, but also touched with a keen sense of humor that has him throwing in these amazing curve balls on the keys, riffing away in surprising twists and turns that always keep the cuts interesting! Titles include "Criss Cross", "Step One", "Blue Juice", "Black Pearl", "The Worm", "Ain't It Funky Now", "Fat Cakes", "Where It's At", "Cash Box", "Kiko", "The Last Minute", and "Discotheque". CD

A great collection of Monk's 10" recordings for Blue Note – seminal not only for the label's commitment to a modernist bop ideal, but also for Monk's integration in the growing collection of top-level jazz players on the New York scene. The work's notable also for the fact that Monk's playing in group settings – not trio ones – and here, his early writing for and interplay with saxes and trumpet would certainly have a strong effect on the development of modern jazz in the 50s. Only the fourth year of this amazing all-star group – and they've already got their own sound so strongly in place, they really make some fresh magic with the music of Thelonious Monk! Arrangements of Monk tunes are by different members of the group – pianist Renee Rosnes, trumpeter Dave Douglas, bassist Matt Penman, drummer Eric Harland, tenorist Joshua Redman, and alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon – who work here alongside the vibes of Bobby Hutcherson in some stunning remakes of "Oska T", "I Mean You", "Ugly Beauty", "Bye Ya", "Criss Cross", "Brilliant Corners", and "Bright Mississippi" – handled by the octet in a style that reminds us of some of Monk's late 50s larger group work on Riverside. VariousNo Jive – Authentic Southern Country Blues ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Rootsy blues from the great Excello Records – most of it recorded not too far from the Tennessee city in which the label made its home! The southern scene in the 50s was going through plenty of changes – partly because of all the migration northwards that started during the wartime years, partly because of the way that radio and growing indie labels were helping criss-cross sounds and scenes through their musical efforts – with a huge run of changes that were taking place in the urban scene. Even out in the sticks, stronger use of the electric guitar really transformed rural blues – even in spare recording settings that might have mirrored blues records of the 20s and 30s – and the use of new ideas, new inflections, and new ways of putting over a tune are perfectly captured here in a batch of rare tracks done by the Excello label. Most of the cuts are super-rare singles, issued here with excellent sound – and there's a few other numbers on the set that are issued here for the first time ever – with great sound and excellent notes. Titles include "I'm Bad" by Good Rockin Bob, "No Jive" by Little Al, "Honey Babe" by Arthur Gunter, "The Natural Facts" by Leroy Campbell, "Wasted Time" by Shy Guy Douglas, "Dirty Britches" by The Leap Frogs, "Welcome Home Baby" by Slim Hunt, and "Quit My Drinkin" by Robert Garrett. VariousThat's The Way I Feel Right Now – A Tribute To Thelonious Monk ... LP
A&M, 1984. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $6.99
A great little entry into a genre that got way too overdone and way too cluttered by the end of the 80s – but which was surprisingly fresh at the time of this initial release! The set pays tribute to the late Thelonious Monk, but does so by moving way past his modern jazz roots – and allowing for participation by a variety of artists in a number of different fields. Hal Willner masterminded the set, and does a great job of making unlike artists work well next to each other – really expanding on famous numbers by Monk, but never getting too goofy overall. Titles include "Functional" by Randy Weston, "Four In One" by Todd Rundgren & Gary Windo, "Thelonious" by Bruce Fowler, "Criss Cross" by Shockabilly, "In Walked Budd" by Terry Adams & Roswell Rudd, "Evidence" by Steve Lacy & Elvin Jones, "Ba-Lu-Bolivar-Ba-Lues-Are" by Was Not Was, "Ask Me Now" by Steve Lacy & Charlie Rouse, "Monk's Mood" by Sharon Freeman, "Round Midnight" by Joe Jackson, and "Friday The Thirteen" by Bobby McFerrin and Bob Dorough. There's plenty of other great Lacy work on the set too – and even if you're put off by the presence of non-jazzers on the set, the album's worth it alone for the Lacy tracks! LP, Vinyl record album

Black Jazz/Snow Dog (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy ... $15.99 18.99
Theo Parrish takes on the music of Black Jazz Records – yet somehow manages to make the whole thing come across with a cosmic groove that's all his own! By that, we don't mean that Theo's messing with the cuts – just that his mix here really highlights the more expansively electric and rhythmically angular elements of the label's classic catalog – sounds that are clearly an inspiration for a huge number of 21st Century musicians and producer – not just Parrish himself! There's a richly spiritual vibe to the whole set – and the collection is easily one of the best presentations of the Black Jazz label we've ever heard – stunning from start to finish. Cuts include "My Favorite Things" by Gene Russell, "Those Who Chant" by Walter Bishop, "Jupiter" and "Convulsions" by The Awakening, "Trance Dance" by Doug Carn, "Time & Space" by Rudolph Johnson, "Criss Cross" and "BE" by Calvin Keys, and "Blue Bossa" by Walter Bishop Jr. CD

✨✧ Steve LacyStraight Horn Of Steve Lacy ... LP
Candid, 1960. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album

The first-ever issue of this rare live set from the legendary Thelonious Monk Quartet of the 60s – the same group that cut some incredible albums for Columbia Records, sounding equally great here in a concert setting in Paris! The group features tremendous tenor work from Charlie Rouse – a player who can be deeply soulful, but also hit all the right angles to match Monk's modern piano lines – as important to Thelonious as the alto sax of Paul Desmond was to Dave Brubeck! And like Brubeck's quartet at the time, the rhythm players here are also key – the fantastic John Ore on bass, and the great Frankie Dunlop on drums – two players who hit all the right spots along the way, and match Monk's energy perfectly. Translated, that means that the record's got lots of nice cuts that have African percussion, electric funk rhythm, and a fairly joyous groove. A sometimes-overlooked classic from the Rolling Stones – but that's maybe just because it's sometimes obscured in the shadow of Exile On Main Street, the record that immediately preceded it! And while it might be a stretch to some, we like to think of Goat's head as kind of a capper to that double-length set – as the Stones are still working out a fair bit of similar ideas, with an opening ear to some global currents, and with great help from some of their key collaborators too. The set's worth it alone for the classic gut-wrencher "Angie" – and other tracks include "Star Star", "Hide Your Love", "Winter", "Can You Hear The Music", "100 Years Ago", and "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)". This great 2LP set features a new stereo mix of the entire album on the first disc – and the second features great rare and alternate tracks – including "Heartbreaker (inst)", "Scarlet (with Jimmy Page)", "All The Rage", "Criss Cross", "100 Years Ago (piano demo)", "Dancing With Mr D (inst)", "Hide Your Love", and 1973 Glyn Johns mixes of "Silver Train", "Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)", and "Dancing With Mr D". A soulful set from Carroll Thompson – the debut from the sultry UK singer, and a set that went onto become a key classic in the lovers rock genre! Carroll has a great way of mixing Jamaican styles with a bit more of a London vibe – coming up with a criss-cross of modes that really reflects the way that reggae changed when it moved across the Atlantic – picked up by the British scene, and circulated amidst different communities in London. Thompson's approach is a perfect portrayal of this mode – as she sings sweetly with these great two-step backings that also draw plenty of energy from late 70s mellow soul – with some aspects that are almost like New Jersey soul of the generation before. Ostinato (UK), Late 90s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really amazing criss-cross of musical modes from the island of Cape Verde – a nation that already gave the world many musical hybrids over the years, but really knocked things out of the park with the electrified funana movement in the 90s! The sounds here are ancient at the core – rootsy percussion and accordion, used in ways that echo South American styles from decades past – but the grooves are quicker, and electrified by beats, keyboards, and other more contemporary elements – so that the music is really set on fire, and burns with a really unexpected sense of urgency! The bpm count on most tracks is pretty high – which makes the deft work of the accordionists even more amazing – and as always with the Ostinato label, the whole thing comes with some wonderfully detailed notes on the music and culture. One of the sharper-edged sessions on the GRP label at the start of the 90s – a self-titled set from keyboardist Kenny Kirkland, who's mostly working here in a stripped-down acoustic mode! The lineup changes a bit from track to track – and in addition to Kenny on keys, the set also features Jeff Tain Watts on drums, Branford Marsalis on tenor and soprano sax, Charnett Moffet on bass, and Don Alias and Jerry Gonzalez on percussion. Some tracks are quite spare – one number is even just a drum solo by Watts – and there's a slightly modern undercurrent at points, as you might find in Marsalis family music of the same point – nothing that's ever too out, but a slightly dark edge that adds a bit more depth than you might expect. Baby BrotherBaby Brother ... LP
Cotillion, 1981. Very Good+ ... $4.99
A great little album from Baby Brother – a group who share a name with a famous funky track by War, but who come on here with a completely different sound altogether! The group are a funk ensemble at the core, but they have this really special way of weaving their instruments together – sharply criss-crossing things with almost effortless ease – which often seems to lead to lots of vocal interplay, too – but all without hitting you over the head without any sort of pyrotechnics. The approach is a bit like the great way that 80s funk groups distilled down the P-Funk mode to a leaner, cleaner sound – but unlike the Ohio or LA groups, this set was produced down in Muscle Shoals by Rick Hall – who does a mighty nice job! Titles include "You Make My Warm Spot Hot", "Movin Music", "How Do You Like Your Love", "Saturday Night (And I'm Boogie Bound)", "Funky Situation", "(Hang On) I'm Coming For You", "Bad Thing", "All Night's Alright", "You've Got Me Wanting You", and "You Asked For it (You Got It)". There's a slight crackle of electricity at times, but never in a way that dampens the soul, especially that of a leader – and while earlier efforts of this sort might have gotten mired in too much criss-crossing of modes, this set comes off perfectly – a fresh entry in Blythe's wonderfully storied career. At the core, the approach is simple – tremendous tenor work from Shabaka Hutchings, drums from Betamax, and keyboards from Danalogue – the latter two of whom are equally important as producers, in the way they take the live performance at the core, and work it into so many other shifting shapes and sounds! Hutchings' solos are always kept mostly intact, which makes for a beating soul to the record, and a nice link to previous generations of jazz – on titles that include "Pyramids", "Tokyo Nights", "Technicolour", "Code", "Lucid Dreamer", "Atomic Wave Dance", "Mystik", and "The Hammer". A really great lineup of musicians from the London scene – coming together here in a mix of modes that's both electric and acoustic, jazz and more global-based – all with the far-reaching sounds you might expect from their previous work in groups like Collocutor or Comet Is Coming! There's a freshness here that's wonderful, right from the very first note – players with a jazz sensibility, but who've also drunk up all the criss-crossing modes that have been bubbling up in London in recent years – pushing past conventional rhythms and instrumental placements, and creating an intensity that takes their music to audiences who might never have listened to mainstream jazz! Players include Tamar Osborn on bass clarinet, flute, and soprano sax; Bex Burch on vibes, electronics, and percussion; Danalogue on Fender Rhodes and other keyboards; Al MacSween on prepared and conventional piano; and Sarathy Korwar on drums and tablas – and all the players seem to handle a wide variety of other instruments as well. A blues album, but one with a difference – thanks to some tremendous help from the legendary Johnny Otis and his young son Shuggie! The Otis family was definitely bringing a lot of funk into their sound at the time, which they share plenty with Slim here – helping to make the record way more than just another late 60s rootsy blues session, and instead a great west coast criss-crossing of modes. Stunning early work from one of our favorite reggae groups ever – the mighty Toots & The Maytals, a key link between the soul styles of the Jamaican scene of the 60s, and the righteous years to come! There's a groove to the Maytals music that nobody else seems to get this right – or this tight – a fantastic criss-crossing of rhythms that's often nicely stripped-down, and which seems to set fire to the vocal interplay between Toots and the rest of the group – in a way that's as vocally explosive as the instrumentation at the core! Sure, these guys can harmonize as well as the rest of their contemporaries – but they've also got an even greater talent for trading back and forth, which seems to make every one of their tunes an instant groove. Titles include "Pee Pee Cluck Cluck", "Loving Spirit", "Dr Lester", "Gola Silver", "Koo Koo", "Revival Reggae", "Thy Kingdom Come", "One Eyed Enos", "A Time To Love", "9 O'Clock", "Know Me Good", "Got To Feel", "Feel So Good", and "Give Peace A Chance". MEV (Musica Elettronica Viva)Spacecraft ... LP
Our Swimmer (Germany), 1967. New Copy ... $24.99 26.99
The title's a great one for this early recording from MEV – as the record's got so much electric energy at times, it does feel a bit like a Spacecraft in operation! The music was recorded live in Berlin, and features Alvin Curran on an unusual kalimba mounted on a ten liter oil can, plus contact microphones and an amplified trumpet; Frederic Rzewski on an amplified glass plate with springs and more contact microphone electronics; Richard Teitelbaum on a modular moog and more electronics; Ivan Vandor on tenor; and Carol Plantamura – all working together in that unique criss-crossing of free improvisation and electro-acoustic music that made MEV so revolutionary in the late 60s – and still pretty breathtaking all these many years later! Gratien MidonetCosmic Poet From Martinique 1979 to 1989 ... LP
Time Capsule (UK), 1980s. New Copy 2LP ... $26.99 29.99
A record with a very evocative title, and a sound that's even more so than you'd guess – definitely cosmic, way more than poetry, and filled with rhythms from the native scene of Gratien Midonet! The music was recorded in France, as part of that great cultural criss-crossing that happened in the scene during the 70s and 80s – when talents from the old colonial strongholds were able to take advantage of some of the better recording opportunities offered in Paris – on a scene that was very open to new sorts of musical experiments! The tracks here are from four different albums, and have this playful mixing of roots and contemporary elements, sung and spoken passages, acoustic percussion and electric instrumentation – all very much in the spirit of some of the best early experiments of the Saravah label. Titles include "Antille O Cristal", "Osana", "La Point De Neg", "Zandoli Leve Doubout", "Roulo", "La Reine", "Mari Rhont Ouve La Pot", and "Kannaval Sakre Pou Tout Z'Heb Pousse". Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $19.99 24.00
A fantastic criss-crossing of modes – free jazz, funk, big band, and fusion – all styles that were blooming big on the Japanese scene of the 70s – wrapped up and reworked here into something new entirely! The set's a live one, and features extended performances from a range of great players who were key to the scene at the time – coming together here under the leadership of keyboardist Shumko Mizuno on the first half, and working with the New Herd of Toshiyuki Miyama on the second! Mizuno wrote all three tracks – and plays both keyboards and drums on the first – alongside a shifting lineup of players who include Seiichi Nakamura on tenor, Kenji Mori on alto, Hideto Kanai on bass, and Kazumi Watanabe on guitar! Titles include the avant "Dum", the sharper "Concentration", and the side-long jam "Jazz Orchestra 75 Part 2". CD

Universal (Brazil), 2002. Used ... $5.99
A real criss-crossing of styles here – lyrical MPB meets heavier production with lots of guitars – in a style that reminds us of the best work by Chico Science and some of his more recent heirs in Brazilian music! Titles include "Papo Macaco", "Abra A Boca", "Papai Oxossi", "Dentro Da Minha Cabeca", "Bom Rapaz", "Il E Bom", and "Favela". CD

Harry MoscoCountry Boy ... CD
PMG (Austria), 1978. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
Sweet grooves from Harry Mosco – once the leader of The Funkees, but stepping out here with some wicked work from the London scene at the end of the 70s! The album's got a snapping electric vibe – sometimes clubby, but with more of a funk feel overall – thanks to some heavy basslines that really give the best cuts a kind of darkness – as do the horns, which create these down-turning inflections that are quite different than the usual sort of Afro-styled groove! Things get pretty freewheeling as the album moves on – and there's a criss-crossing of modes that almost reminds us of some of the work that Ice cut on the French scene of the time. Titles include "I Feel Funky", "Harry's Party", "It's Too Late", "Country Boy", and "Wanderer". CD

✨✧ Duke PearsonIt Could Only Happen With You ... LP
Blue Note, 1970. Very Good+ ... $19.99
Pivotal work from Duke Pearson – a brilliant set that perfectly sums up all the criss-crossing of styles he was working on in the late 60s – and comes up with a wonderful blend of electric jazz, Brazilian rhythms, and just a touch of 70s soul! Pearson plays some sweet Fender Rhodes on the set, in addition to acoustic piano – and there's some other wonderful instrumentation in the mix too – including flute and guitar from Hermeto Pascoal, making a rare Blue Note appearance – plus sweet flutes from Jerry Dodgion and Lew Tabackin, both blowing in kind of a CTI-ish way – as well as tenor from Frank Foster, trumpets from Collins/Shepley, and wonderful drums from Mickey Roker – whose inventive rhythms here really helps set fire to Duke's new ideas. Flora Purim sings on a few tracks – pre-Fantasy Records, and turning in some of her greatest vocals ever – and titles include a wonderful version of "Stormy", plus "Book's Bossa", "Gira, Girou", "Hermeto", "Emily", and "It Could Only Happen With You". PicnicPicnic ... CD
Data/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1985. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 15.99
Free jazz, and lots lots more – a lost nugget from an especially creative period in the Dutch scene, headed up by cellist Tristan Honsinger! At some level, the music echoes other improvised work by Honsinger – but at others, it also reflects the criss-crossing of genres and scenes that were taking place during these key years – a point after which free jazz had established itself, post-punk had opened up new waves of expression, too-prog tendencies had settled down, and the higher art world had opened their arms to embrace them all! The songs are both instrumental, and feature occasional vocals from Tiziana Simona Vigni – whose role with the sextet is not unlike some of Irene Aebi's performances with Steve Lacy, although maybe a bit more freewheeling and open-ended – more in a Recommended Records vein – a label that might have been a good home for this set, were it not issued by Data Records. In additional to Honsinger on cello and additional voice, the record also features Toshinori Kondo on trumpet, Jean-Jacques Avenel on bass, Sean Bergin on saxes, and Michael Vatcher on percussion – on titles that include "Quandro Era Estate", "Picnic", "Violets", "Teeth", "Orient Express", "Laly", "Romy", and "After The Rain". Phoebe SnowIt Looks Like Snow ... LP
Columbia, 1976. Near Mint- ... $4.99
There's nobody at all like Phoebe Snow – and on a 70s album like this, she more than earns her place in pop music history! The set's a great criss-crossing of so many styles – the jazzy inflections of Snow's vocals, the warm production of mid-70s Columbia Records, and the nice undercurrent of soul that comes from the good choices of studio musicians – not to mention the familiar acoustic guitar that Phoebe knows how to use in just the right ways – always free from any folksy cliches of the previous generation. Titles include "Autobiography", "Don't Let Me Down", "Shakey Ground", "Teach Me Tonight", "Mercy On Those", and "Stand Up On The Rock". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed sleeve, which is wrinkled a bit. Cover has some ring and edge wear.)

Sol SetOla De Novo ... LP
All Good, 2022. New Copy ... $22.99 25.99
Some of the richest work we've heard from John Beltran in years – a well-crafted little record that's bubbling over with influences from jazz and Brazilian music – and which make Beltran sound a lot more like a group leader than just a producer in the studio! The album's criss-crossed with vocal parts that really recall the glory days of 70s Brazilian jazz – while the rhythms pulsate with some of the more contemporary elements you'd expect from Beltran's other projects, but handled with soulful warmth that really holds the whole thing together as a full length set! There's plenty to love here if you dig older Brazilian rhythms, breezy 70s club jazz, and some of the warmer currents of contemporary club – on titles that include "Rhythm Of The Sun", "Linda Sao Paulo", "Sugarloaf", "Beija Flor", "Pour Le Moment", "Bliss Mode", and "Let's Get Away". ✨✧ StellioL'Etoile De La Musique Creole 1932 to 1938 (4CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Mid 30s. New Copy 4CD ... Just Sold Out!
A huge amount of work from a reedman we'd never heard before – Martinique-born Alexandre Stellio – a hell of a clarinet player, and one who effortlessly weaves together island rhythms and early strands of jazz! All of the recordings here were done in Paris during the mid 30s, and provide a great illustration of the way that the crumbling French colonial empire was allowing all sorts of unusual criss-crossing in sound – in this case, the already-strong Parisian love of jazz mixed with the influence of new phrasings, colors, and rhythms from the French Caribbean – very much in the spirit that would soon become known as biguine! Stellio recorded a surprising amount of music during these years – and the set brings together every session with detailed notes and excellent sound – recordings that are all awash with his amazingly deft, edgey reed lines over romping rhythms, piano, and guitar – the last of which has some slight echoes of Parisian swing. 85 tracks in all – and notes in French and English! ✨✧ Muddy WatersAfter The Rain ... LP
Cadet/Get On Down, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 24.98
A gem of a record from the funk-heavy period of Muddy Waters – a moment that once made the traditional blues fans mad, but which has gone onto become the stuff of legend – thanks to a real criss-crossing of Chicago talents in the studio! The set was co-produced by Chess Records talents Charles Stepney, Gene Barge, and Marshall Chess – and features expanded instrumentation that includes Phil Upchurch on added guitar, Louis Satterfield on bass, Charles Stepney on organ, and Morris Jennings on drums – plus even more guitar from Pete Cosey, who you might know from later work on some Miles Davis electric albums! Muddy is still very firmly the lead talent at the core, though – coming across with a badass kind of vibe that mixes his raw roots with the hipper soul of the new generation – a great Chess/Cadet hybird that was years ahead of its time. Titles include "I Am The Blues", "Hurtin Soul", "Bottom Of The Sea", "Honey Bee", "Rollin' And Tumblin'", "Screamin & Cryin", and "Blues & Trouble". LP, Vinyl record album

WitchIn The Past (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Now Again, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 24.98
Tripped-out and wonderful sounds from Witch – served up in this excellent early record from the Zamrock kings of the 70s! Lyrics are in English, and have these dark tones that work perfectly with the group's offbeat guitar and organ lines – sometimes mixed here with acoustic guitar that changes things up from the fuzzier sound of their debut a bit – yet which still maintains a definitely trippy feel! The style isn't really psyche, but isn't Afro Funk either – and almost has some of the unique criss-crossing of modes you'd find in the hippest South American groups of the time. Titles include "Mushed Potatoe", "It's Alright", "Chance", "Young Lady", "Living In The Past", and "She Is Mine". LP, Vinyl record album

Lokalophon (UK), 2020. Near Mint- ... $11.99
A great trio of players from the Zonke family of Zimbabwe – working here in a rootsy mode that makes highly percussive instrumentation with their own harmonized vocals! Instrumentation is spare – all three members play ngoma drums, with round bottom-heavy tones – plus hosha and the matepe – a variation on the familiar thumb piano mode – which create these ringing notes that dance out and fly nicely around the vocals – criss-crossing in sound with a very rhythmic progression that really gives the record a great sense of energy! VariousGospel Truth – The Complete Singles Collection (3LP set) ... LP
Stax/Craft, Early 70s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... $27.99 49.99
An overdue look at a very cool record label – the short-lived Gospel Truth imprint, which was an outlet for the more spiritual side of Stax Records in the early 70s! The music is gospel, but often has plenty of the best Memphis soul elements of more popular Stax/Volt work of the time – and there's a nice criss-crossing of artists going on here – so that you'll get some gospel singers moving into very soulful territory, and some soul artists trying their hand at music that's a bit more righteous overall! And while albums by The Rance Allen Group on the label have been reissued over the years, this is the first time anyone's pulled together the much more obscure 45s – which gives us a much bigger picture of the label at work. The set features 34 tracks in all – and titles include "Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You" by Reverend W Bernard Avant, "He's Mine" by Jacqui Verdell, "At The Feet Of The Master" by Blue Aquarius, "I'm A Child Of The King" by The People's Choir Of Operation Push, "Reflections" by Louise McCord, "We're The Salt Of The Earth" by Rance Allen Group, "Ride Out The Storm" by Joshie Jo Armstead, "If The Shoe Fits Wear It" by The 21st Century, "Magnificent Sanctuary Band" by Rev Maceo Woods, "Hot Line To Jesus" by Rance Allen Group, "I Got The Vibes" by Joshie Jo Armstead, "Consider Me" by Terry Lynn Community Choir, "Keep My Baby Warm" by Charles May & Annette May Thomas, and "Do It Yourself" by Jimmy Jones. VariousHarde Smart – Flemish & Dutch Grooves From The 70s ... CD
Sdban (Belgium), 1970s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $18.99
Mad music from the Dutch scene of the 70s – music recorded either in The Netherlands, or the Dutch part of Belgium – pulled together here in a collection that's filled with ear-opening funky gems! The music here isn't straight soul, funk, or jazz – but rather criss-crossing musical styles that often have a little bit of each – often with these qualities that remind us of better-known soundtrack or folk-funk songs from the time – but which take on very different qualities, given the difference in language! There's plenty of great drums throughout, loads of killer keyboards, and basslines that can make just about any sort of song a funky nugget – and as with other titles on the Sdban label, the whole thing's a real revelation – a gateway to music that we never would have discovered otherwise – but now find that we can't live without. Titles include "Eva's Pakje" by Jimmy Frey, "Zomerliefde" by Laurentius, "Onheil" by Lamp & Lazerus, "Gemendg Gevoel" by Herman De Bruycker, "Wie Weet" by Spectrum, "Het Oink Beest" by Elly & Rikkert, "Maan Dag" by Daan Broos & Dapokaster, "Nooit Meer" by Josine Van Dalsum, "Handicap 2000" by Daan Broos, "Het Huis Van Wilde Tederheid" by Luk Bral, and "Hollandse Taal" by Moeder En Haar Jongens. 2CD set features one disc mixed, another unmixed!
