✨✧ Thelonious MonkCriss-Cross ... CD
Columbia, 1963. Used ... $4.99
A title and cover that beautifully illustrate the sharp-edged power of the Thelonious Monk quartet on Columbia – and a wonderful place to start if you're just digging Thelonious' music! The record is similar to the best of Monk's Columbia sides – in that it revisits older tunes and themes from previous years, but in a way that's often much better than the original recordings – thanks to some incredible energy between group members Charlie Rouse on tenor, John Ore on bass, and Frankie Dunlop on drums! Rouse's sharp horn is easily a real bnous here – as it dances beautifully with Monk's piano lines and creates a magical sense of juxtaposition and fluidity, but is still nicely earthy and soulful as well! Titles include "Criss Cross", "Think Of One", "Eronel", "Hackensack", "Rhythm-a-Ning", and "Crepuscule With Nellie". This CD bonus tracks on the the original album: "Coming On The Hudson","Tea For Two" and "Eronel". CD

Donald EdwardsColor Of Us Suite ... CD
Criss Cross (Netherlands), 2021. New Copy ... $15.99 18.98
Maybe one of the most beautiful records we've ever heard from drummer Donald Edwards – a set that states its position strongly with the title, then features a suite of tracks that work together perfectly to deliver Donald's message! The record has a power and focus that's wonderful – as Edwards leads the group through his own compositions with a soaring, soulful quality that we're not sure we've ever heard him express this strongly – getting superb performances out of a combo that includes Anthony Wonsey on piano, Ben Wolfe on bass, Abraham Burton on tenor, and David Gilmore on guitar. Titles include "Black", "Brown", "Tan", "Finding Beauty", "Little Hopes", and "Hurricane Sophia". CD

Criss Cross/Elemental, 1994. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $38.99
You might not recognize the group's name, but you'll definitely know the three leaders – pianist Brad Mehldau, tenorist Mark Turner, and guitarist Peter Bernstein – coming together here in a session that's a real standout in the catalogs of all three musicians! Brad Mehldau somehow seems to have more of an edge, Mark Turner is warmer than usual, and Peter Bernstein makes his guitar ring out with bold colors and tones that really seem to hold the whole thing together! Remaining quintet members include Larry Grenadier on bass and Leon Parker on drums – both players who deserve equal billing with the M, T, and B – and titles include two takes on the great Jackie McLean tune "Little Melonae" – plus a version of Wayne Shorter's "Limbo, Horace Silver's "Peace", and the original tunes "Afterglow", "Phatasm", and "Belief". Sonny CrissComplete Imperial Sessions ... CD
Imperial/Blue Note, 1956. Used 2 CDs ... $14.99
Fantastic work from one of the most overlooked alto talents of all-time! This beautiful CD features tracks from Sonny's 3 rare albums on Imperial – Jazz USA, Go Man, and Plays Cole Porter. The records were all recorded in 1956 – and they feature some of the strongest bop playing to ever come out of LA, total proof that that city wasn't always noodling around with cool jazz during the 50s! Sonny plays alto so well you want to cry – and every note is perfectly placed, with just the right mix of technical skill and warm soulful humanity. Most of this material has only ever been reissued in Japan – and the CD includes wealth of excellent cuts like "If I Had You", "I Love You", "Wailin With Joe", "West Coast Blues", "Criss Cross", "Ham's Blues", and "Blue Friday" – but the whole thing's great! Only the fourth year of this amazing all-star group – and they've already got their own sound so strongly in place, they really make some fresh magic with the music of Thelonious Monk! Arrangements of Monk tunes are by different members of the group – pianist Renee Rosnes, trumpeter Dave Douglas, bassist Matt Penman, drummer Eric Harland, tenorist Joshua Redman, and alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon – who work here alongside the vibes of Bobby Hutcherson in some stunning remakes of "Oska T", "I Mean You", "Ugly Beauty", "Bye Ya", "Criss Cross", "Brilliant Corners", and "Bright Mississippi" – handled by the octet in a style that reminds us of some of Monk's late 50s larger group work on Riverside. The set also features a full dose of original compositions – the long "San Francisco Suite", plus "Union", "Lion's Gate", "Life At The End Of The Tunnel", and "Haast Pass". CD

Carroll ThompsonHopelessly In Love ... CD
Trojan (UK), 1981. New Copy ... About November 5, 2021
A soulful set from Carroll Thompson – the debut from the sultry UK singer, and a set that went onto become a key classic in the lovers rock genre! Carroll has a great way of mixing Jamaican styles with a bit more of a London vibe – coming up with a criss-cross of modes that really reflects the way that reggae changed when it moved across the Atlantic – picked up by the British scene, and circulated amidst different communities in London. Thompson's approach is a perfect portrayal of this mode – as she sings sweetly with these great two-step backings that also draw plenty of energy from late 70s mellow soul – with some aspects that are almost like New Jersey soul of the generation before. Titles include "Simply In Love", "I'm So Sorry", "No You Don't Know", "Sing Me A Love Song", "Merry Go Round", and "Mr Cool". CD

VariousThat's The Way I Feel Right Now – A Tribute To Thelonious Monk ... LP
A&M, 1984. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $5.99
A great little entry into a genre that got way too overdone and way too cluttered by the end of the 80s – but which was surprisingly fresh at the time of this initial release! The set pays tribute to the late Thelonious Monk, but does so by moving way past his modern jazz roots – and allowing for participation by a variety of artists in a number of different fields. Hal Willner masterminded the set, and does a great job of making unlike artists work well next to each other – really expanding on famous numbers by Monk, but never getting too goofy overall. Titles include "Functional" by Randy Weston, "Four In One" by Todd Rundgren & Gary Windo, "Thelonious" by Bruce Fowler, "Criss Cross" by Shockabilly, "In Walked Budd" by Terry Adams & Roswell Rudd, "Evidence" by Steve Lacy & Elvin Jones, "Ba-Lu-Bolivar-Ba-Lues-Are" by Was Not Was, "Ask Me Now" by Steve Lacy & Charlie Rouse, "Monk's Mood" by Sharon Freeman, "Round Midnight" by Joe Jackson, and "Friday The Thirteen" by Bobby McFerrin and Bob Dorough. There's plenty of other great Lacy work on the set too – and even if you're put off by the presence of non-jazzers on the set, the album's worth it alone for the Lacy tracks! LP, Vinyl record album

Black Jazz/Snow Dog (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy ... $15.99 18.99
Theo Parrish takes on the music of Black Jazz Records – yet somehow manages to make the whole thing come across with a cosmic groove that's all his own! By that, we don't mean that Theo's messing with the cuts – just that his mix here really highlights the more expansively electric and rhythmically angular elements of the label's classic catalog – sounds that are clearly an inspiration for a huge number of 21st Century musicians and producer – not just Parrish himself! There's a richly spiritual vibe to the whole set – and the collection is easily one of the best presentations of the Black Jazz label we've ever heard – stunning from start to finish. Cuts include "My Favorite Things" by Gene Russell, "Those Who Chant" by Walter Bishop, "Jupiter" and "Convulsions" by The Awakening, "Trance Dance" by Doug Carn, "Time & Space" by Rudolph Johnson, "Criss Cross" and "BE" by Calvin Keys, and "Blue Bossa" by Walter Bishop Jr. CD

A European disco world that's ripe for rediscovery – one that's much more obscure than better-known club work from Germany, France, and Italy – but which may well be even groovier than the work from those three scenes! The package is a great complement to some of the funk and jazz sets on the Sdban label – and like those, it really digs deep – to uncover a vast array of music from the small nation – which was clearly a hotbed of groovy activity in the 70s, at a level that none of us realized at the time! The tunes here mix together funk and pop, soul and disco – all in ways that criss-cross strongly with more familiar modes of the period – but often have an offbeat quality, and sometimes a surprising sense of humor that comes through in the mostly English lyrics in the lead. 2CD set features 30 tracks – and titles include "Ethereo Disco" by R Roland, "King Kong" by Carl Watson, "Baby Won't You Turn Me On" by Charles Watson, "Sexy" by Lovedream, "La Gomme" by L2, "Cool & Get Up" by Quartz, "I'm Free" by Steve, "Groovin To The Music" by Flame, "Queen To The Pharoah" by Marianne, "Feel So Glad" by Dan Davis, "Ivro De Vie" by Kevin Moraine, "Be My Love Tonight" by CC Band, "Strange How You Move" by Venus, and "Bubblegum" by Bubble. Don't think "disco" as in the New York scene at Studio 54 – as these cuts are much deeper and dubbier – served up under the supervision of Bunny Lee by studio maestros Barnabas and Pat Kelly! Instrumentation is by the Aggrovators, but the magic comes equally from the production effects as it does from the massive rhythms by the group – as all the elements are filtered out in space, and criss-cross back and forth in this wonderful way – never too sloppy or experimental, but definitely tripping out with the groove! Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A well-done look at a style that would break big on the European scene of the mid 60s – the mixture of jazz performance and classical melodies – presented here in a slightly different way by some of the genre's true pioneers! Jacques Loussier recorded famous albums of Bach tunes done ala jazz, Andre Previn recorded often as a classical musician – but the work here is different than both of those modes – as the tracks are mostly jazz numbers, but handled with the kind of technical prowess that you'd hear from a classically-trained pianist – still very swinging, but with piano parts that mix melody and improvisation with some jaw-dropping command of the keyboard. The package features work from four key proponents of the scene – each represented on some less-reissued material. First up is Jacques Loussier, on titles that include "Mon Ami My Friend", "Sarabaya Johnny", "Oh Heart Of Love", "Le Chant Des Canons", and "La Fiancee Du Pirate". Next is Andre Hodier on "The Alphabet", "On A Blues", "Cross Criss", "On A Standard", "Paradoxe II", and "On A Riff". Claude Bolling serves up a few numbers – "Clair De Lune", "Back To Swing", "Prelude To A Kiss", and "Cry Me A River" – followed by Andre Previn, on titles that include "Young Man's Lament", "Blame It On My Youth", "Summertime", "A Year Of Youth", "Young & Tender", and "Love Is For The Very Young". A great collection of Monk's 10" recordings for Blue Note – seminal not only for the label's commitment to a modernist bop ideal, but also for Monk's integration in the growing collection of top-level jazz players on the New York scene. The work's notable also for the fact that Monk's playing in group settings – not trio ones – and here, his early writing for and interplay with saxes and trumpet would certainly have a strong effect on the development of modern jazz in the 50s. Titles on this second volume include "Four In One", "Ask Me Now", "Criss Cross", "Skippy", "Hornin In", "Sixteen", and "Let's Cool One" – and this new version features a total of 18 tracks with great remastering and some rare alternate takes! Seminal work by one of the first big figures in country music – the great Roy Acuff, whose early material was the second force putting the sound on the map after the work of Jimmie Rodgers! Monstrous funk from Morocco – unreleased material recorded in 1973, with a sound that should have revolutionized North Africa at the time! The group works here in a really raw blend of heavy percussion and riffing guitar – produced with lots of edge and echo, and delivered with the spirited vibe you'd expect from the ensemble's appearance on the cover! There's plenty of criss-crossing between the lead and chorus vocals on the set – but the guitar gets plenty of space too, and has this really sharp quality that's clearly informed by psych, but funkier overall – and very different than any work of the sort from farther down the continent. Drums are super-heavy, and the basslines match as well – on titles that include "Albaki", "Taali", "Chamaa", "Aflana", "Kaddaba", "Moulate Salef", and "Al Hadaoui". CD

Twin saxes, coming together here with a really wonderful sound – the tenor of Ingrid Laubrock and straight alto sax of Stephane Payen – criss-crossing beautifully next to the drums of Tom Rainey and bass of Chris Tordini! There's a really special sort of sound going on here – the reed interplay never sounds too cold or academic, as can sometimes happen – and both players have a very intuitive sense of energy – rising and cresting together, breaking off in individual explorations – and often having this sort of inherent swing, even when things get pretty wild. Titles include "Knock Whack", "Dice", "Evaporating Dew", "The Chant", "Out Of Thin Air", and "Harmonization" – the last of which might be a good title for the album! CD

A jazz record, but one with so much going on it's impossible to pin down – strands of influences from Latin, Brazilian, and other modes – mixed with occasional vocal contributions too! The vibe is a bit like some of those really creative criss-crossings on the French scene of the 70s – maybe like a record on Saravah – and maybe that's no surprise, given that the set is French Canadian – a meeting in the studio between bassist/arranger Vic Angelillo and pianist Henri Hamel – in a lineup that features guitars, trumpet, alto, soprano sax, flute, and some nice electric piano too! Vocalists include Ranee Lee, Leo Monast, Yolanda Lisi, and Claude Leveilee – and the whole thing has a really groovy vibe. Heavenly Sweetness (France), 2020. New Copy ... $18.99
A really fantastic idea for a project – and one that comes off even better than we would have guessed – new versions of classic grooves from the nations of Cabo Verde and Guinea Bissau, performed by a really well-matched group of singers and musicians, in a mode that's quite different than the usual revival record of this nature! The songs are definitely classics, but the presentation is very contemporary – directed by producer Guts, and Francisco Sousa, with a special ear for avoiding the sorts of cliches that both mar a project like this, and some of the stereotypes that get reinforced by reissues on the market. Instead, there's a fresh criss-crossing of cultures, but one that never waters down the roots at all – maybe a bit like some of the best Parisian productions of the 70s and 80s post-colonial years. Titles include "Dunia Be Tene", "Riba Bass Di Mi", "Citi Ku Liti", "No Guinea", "Mulato Ferrera", "Segunda", and "Di Mas". CD

The tunes here definitely have the heavy percussion of gwo-ka, but they also bring in plenty of elements of funk and soul – the latter from Erick's amazing vocal style, which has this really deep flow that's wrapped around a set of French and Creole lyrics, but which has amazing power even if you can't understand the language! There's lots of great elements on keyboards and electric bass, which further helps underscore the funkier part of the music – and the whole thing is the kind of wonderful blend we've always loved from the criss-crossing of cultures in Guadeloupe, but also in a mode that's head and shoulders above most of the rest. Titles include "Joue Zizipan", "Donatien", "Embawgo", "De Chate Cole", "De Ti Mo Pawol Cweol", "L'Heureux Noir", "Jean La Line La Clere", and "Desere Nou De May". CD

EdenEden ... LP
Return To Analog (Canada), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99
If Adam's Eden was this groovy, he might not have gotten into trouble with Eve, the apple, and all of that other business! This Eden's a French Canadian group from the 70s – and one that's got a wonderfully proggy sound – super-strong drums, long-spinning keyboards, and criss-crossing guitar lines that get occasional vocal support – but which are more than comfortable enough here working on long instrumental passages, of the type that put this record tight next to some of the best Italian prog classics of the 70s. Vocals are by Jean-Bernard Borja, but only feature on a few of the songs – leaving plenty of room for instrumental magic on cuts that include "Intuition", "La Foret", "Allias", "La Ballerine Musclee", "Transe", and a nice take on Faure's "Pavane". EmbryoLa Blama Sparozzi ... LP
Schneeball (Germany), Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $38.99
One of the more obscure albums from Embryo – a set recorded after their prog jazz classics of the 70s, and which still shows the group nicely pointing their music forward! There's maybe more avant rock elements in the mix than before, but still plenty of jazzy moments, and a nice use of instrumentation from around the globe – as they did in the past – and the whole thing comes across with some of the unusual criss-crossing of European and African elements you might find in the work of Aksak Maboul at the same time! Tracks are of varying lengths, with varying instrumentation, and the double-length record features material recorded over the course of a few different years – with titles that include "Egypt Straat", "Wasserrader", "Pia Pia", "Nigeria Karnataka", "Evas Zimmer", "La Blama Sparozzi", "Xingu", and "Reportage". Soundway (UK), 2013. Used ... $2.99
A brilliant criss-crossing of group from this cool trans-global group – a set recorded in London, but with roots in Venezuela, LA, and Ghana – served up with a sound that's even greater than the sum of its parts! Malcolm Catto recorded the record – and really helps bring a funky energy to the record, by working alongside lead studio help from Jack Yglesias of The Heliocentrics – pushing here into a space that's even more offbeat than the grooves of that group! There's loads of rich acoustic instrumentation – especially percussion – and Mulatu joins the record at one spot, furthering the exotic appeal of the set. Some tracks have an almost ethnographic vibes, while others are a bit more contemporary – although the overall sound is more than worthy of placement on the Soundway label. Titles incude "Arena", "Cumbacutiri", "Fly Through The Lightning To Speak With The Sun", "El Negrero", "Escape To The Palenque", "Manicero", "La Familia", and "Speak To The Spirit Of The Sea". CD

Solid State, 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $7.99
The second album in this series that captures the fire and spontaneity of the famous late 60s Sunday afternoon sessions at the Village Vanguard – recorded when that club was an important site for criss-crossing of styles and traditions, as you'll hear wonderfully in this set! The album features a sextet that includes Pepper Adams, Dizzy Gillespie, Chick Corea, Richard Davis, Mel Lewis, and Garnet Brown – playing in an easy, open format that has them really stretching out on 3 long tracks. The focus here is on the solo work of the players, but there's also a surprisingly great sense of cohesiveness and lyrical interplay as well. Titles include "Tour De Force", "On The Trail", and "Sweet Gorgia Brown". LP, Vinyl record album

Dusko Goykovich with Nathan Davis & Mal WaldronSwinging Macedonia ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1966. New Copy ... $16.99
A legendary German session from the 60s – and a record that really showcases the unusual criss-crossing of modes that was going on in the European scene at the time! There's a very strong MPS vibe here – as trumpeter Dusko Goykovich leads a swinging sextet that includes Nathan Davis on flute, soprano, and tenor – blowing some tremendously soulful reed lines – plus incredible rhythms from Mal Waldron on piano, Peter Trunk on bass, and Cees See on drums. The record's an attempt to bring traditional Macedonian rhythms into a jazz perspective – but with players like these, it swings in a way any Macedonian album never could – damn soulful, and with a great exotic vibe. Davis is especially great, and plays in a soaring modal vein that's similar to his work on his classic MPS sides, and on the records he cut in America in the early 70s. The album's a beautiful session that often get's overlooked because it blends it with the Enja catalog – but it's really more of a record that belongs in an MPS reissue series, and is a great lost groover that's waiting to be rediscovered by the Dusty Groove crowd. Titles include "Macedonia", "Old Fisherman's Daughter", "Jumbo Uganda", "Bem Basha", "Saga Se Karame", and "The Nights Of Skopje". CD

A blues album, but one with a difference – thanks to some tremendous help from the legendary Johnny Otis and his young son Shuggie! Despite the fact that the leader is billed as Guitar Slim Green, Shuggie actually plays some lead guitar on the record too – adding in some cool, complicated solos that point towards his genius to come as a solo act – and which also get some nicely romping rhythms from Johnny on drums! The Otis family was definitely bringing a lot of funk into their sound at the time, which they share plenty with Slim here – helping to make the record way more than just another late 60s rootsy blues session, and instead a great west coast criss-crossing of modes. Titles include "Shake Em Up", "My Little Angel Child", "5th Street Alley Boogie", "Old Folks Blues", "This War Ain't Right", and "Big Fine Thing". Keith JarrettExpectations ... CD
Columbia/Sony, 1972. Used ... $8.99
A totally wonderful album from the young Keith Jarrett – and a set that's different than most of the pianist's other well-known modes – not his solo improvisations, not his successful trio material, and not even his more outside quartet modes of the 70s – but instead this incredible criss-crossing of sounds that really stands apart from most of his other records! The album features Keith on piano and soprano sax – an instrument he played more early on – in open, freewheeling tracks that often mix tuneful passages with more rhythmic pulsations – handled with a core group that includes Charlie Haden on bass and Paul Motian on drums, working with guitar from Sam Brown, tenor from Dewey Redman, percussion from Airto, and some larger string and brass arrangements too! Jarrett also plays electric piano at times, and the album has some of the lyricism of Treasure Island, but with a very different vibe – spun out beautifully over the space of the double-length set. Titles include "Take Me Back", "Expectations", "Vision", "Common Mama", "The Magician In You", "Sundance", "Nomads", and "Bring Back The Time When". CD

An odd little album from tenorist Clifford Jordan – but a great one too, given the unique format! As the title implies, Cliff pays tribute to Leadbelly – handling a host of Huddie Ledbetter originals, but in a style that's kind of 60s soul jazz, with a bit of blues as well – one of those unusual criss-crossings of styles that you'd get on some of the Atlantic jazz sessions of the 60s. Jordan's tenor is firmly in the lead on all numbers – and other players include Roy Burrowes on trumpet, Cedar Walton on piano, Julian Priester on trombone, and Chuck Wayne on banjo instead of his usual guitar! Two tracks feature vocals by Sandra Douglass – and titles include "Dick's Holler", "Silver City Bound", "Black Girl", "De Gray Goose", "Yellow Gal", and "Black Betty". LP, Vinyl record album

Kaleidoscopio is basically a duo – with Portuguese vocals from the lovely Janaina Lima, plus broken beats, guitar, and keys from her partner Kiko. The rhythms are strong and snapping – with bits of London criss-crossing with sunnier sounds of Italy and Rio in the mix – and the tunes have a proud, free, and buoyant quality that gives the album a really positive and progressive groove overall! The core element here is the guitar – which echoes exotic modes that seem to move from Mexican folk, to contemporary Tuareg sounds, and even a bit of southwest guitar instrumental echo – but all in ways that are very fresh and different, and which also sound quite unusual compared to the usual use of guitar in a funky combo! There's a bit of vocals on the album, but really the guitar is the main "voice" – and one that speaks volumes – on titles that include "Lady & Man", "Como Te Quiero", "Shades Of Man", "Maria Tambien", "Como Me Quieres", "A Hymn", and "Rules". The title's an apt one – given that the record was the end of the tremendous run of records from Led Zeppelin – issued after the death of legendary drummer John Bomham – but the set's also way more than just an endpoint, as many of the tracks return to the group's beginning – and bring back unheard sounds from early 70s sessions! There's a nice criss-crossing of styles here – from the rawness of the earliest records, to the refined complexity of the mid 70s – and the album's way more than just an afterthought to the catalog – and is filled with great cuts that include the Bonham showpiece "Bonzo's Montreux", plus "We're Gonna Groove", "Poor Tom", "I Can't Quit You Baby". Dubby funk with plenty of Jamaican undertones, but not exactly a reggae set – and instead the sort of wonderful criss-crossing of modes we've come to expect from The Lions! The group definitely owes a lot to the sound of 60s and 70s Kingston – yet their approach is different, too – a bit sharper and maybe more soul-based than the usual reggae group – in ways that belie some of the deep funk associations of the group members! Yet from a reggae perspective, the set's right on the money too – played at a level that easily rivals the Studio One sound back in the day, yet served up with production that's even sharper overall – thanks to work by Connie Price in the studio. Titles include "Birds On A Wire", "This Generation", "Picture On The Wall", "New Girl", "Pieces Of A Man", "Let's Go Out Tonight", and "Be Easy". 7-inch, Vinyl record

"Four Paths Of Light" is a suite in four parts, performed by acoustic guitarist Jason Vieux with this really wonderful sound – almost a criss-crossing of some of Metheny's musical ideas with an older history of stringed instrumentation. "Road To The Sun" is another four part work, handled by the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet – a group who take a surprisingly gentle approach to the material, with interwoven strings that match some of the complexity of Pat Metheny's own performance! Wonderfully groovy work from Rim Kwaku Obeng – an artist with African roots, but working here in the San Francisco scene of the early 80s – where he's clearly picked up a very international vibe in his music! Rim definitely plays some traditional percussion on the tracks, but there's also a more contemporary funky club approach too – a mixing of modes that's totally great, and which almost represents an 80s step forward for the already-great Bay Area soul vibe of the 70s! The first half of the set features material from the Too Tough EP – which has very cool female vocals, both a lead and a chorus – the latter of whom move around with the rhythms in this totally great way that almost feels like some New York cuts from the Danceteria generation. The second half of the set loses the female singers, but is still every bit as wonderful as the first – with these long grooves from Rim & The Believers that have the percussion, basslines, and guitars criss-crossing in even more amazing ways. Late 70s work from Geraldo Pino – the artist who was credited as being one of the first musicians to bring the styles of James Brown to play in West Africa – still grooving hard here at the other end of the decade! The album's got a clubby vibe in parts – the "boogie" that you'd expect from the title – but like some of the best Nigerian efforts of this time, there's a very freewheeling interpretation of the style – so that things are often plenty offbeat, even when you think they're heading into familiar territory – filled with the criss-crossing of rhythms and cultures we love in Pino's other music, and recorded with a very gritty production style overall! A gem of a record from the funk-heavy period of Muddy Waters – a moment that once made the traditional blues fans mad, but which has gone onto become the stuff of legend – thanks to a real criss-crossing of Chicago talents in the studio! The set was co-produced by Chess Records talents Charles Stepney, Gene Barge, and Marshall Chess – and features expanded instrumentation that includes Phil Upchurch on added guitar, Louis Satterfield on bass, Charles Stepney on organ, and Morris Jennings on drums – plus even more guitar from Pete Cosey, who you might know from later work on some Miles Davis electric albums! Muddy is still very firmly the lead talent at the core, though – coming across with a badass kind of vibe that mixes his raw roots with the hipper soul of the new generation – a great Chess/Cadet hybird that was years ahead of its time. Titles include "I Am The Blues", "Hurtin Soul", "Bottom Of The Sea", "Honey Bee", "Rollin' And Tumblin'", "Screamin & Cryin", and "Blues & Trouble". LP, Vinyl record album

Lokalophon (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99
A great trio of players from the Zonke family of Zimbabwe – working here in a rootsy mode that makes highly percussive instrumentation with their own harmonized vocals! Instrumentation is spare – all three members play ngoma drums, with round bottom-heavy tones – plus hosha and the matepe – a variation on the familiar thumb piano mode – which create these ringing notes that dance out and fly nicely around the vocals – criss-crossing in sound with a very rhythmic progression that really gives the record a great sense of energy! VariousChebran – French Boogie 1980 to 1985 ... CD
Born Bad (France), Early 80s. New Copy ... $14.99
Very cool sounds from the French scene of the post-disco years – music that reflects that growing embrace of boogie rhythms on European dancefloors, but in ways that are often inflected with new wave and electro soul styles too! The music here is leaner and a lot more creative than the bigger Euro disco modes of a few years before – and often has that criss-crossing of soul, funk, rock, and post-punk modes that played big on the downtown New York scene of the early 80s – that Danceteria mode you'd hear on Ze Records, 99 Records, or other hip imprints of the time – but delivered here in a batch of tracks that are a lot more obscure! The Born Bad label has already tipped us off to groovy French sounds from the 60s, and punk work of the 70s – and this package is another one of their culture-opening gems – with titles that include "Easy Life" by New Paradise, "Play Boy En Detresse" by Style, "A Mon Age Deja Fatique" by Pierre Edouard, "La Degaine" by Trigo & Friends, "La Fourmi" by Bianca, "Gerard Vincent Par Gerard Vincent" by Gerard Vincent, "Ma Vie Dans Un Bocal" by Ich, "Les Crabes" by Attache Case, "Miam Miam Goody Goody" by Henriette Coulouvrat, and "Qu'Est Ce Qu'Il A" by Krootchey. Strut (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic look at the groundbreaking sounds of the Disques Debs label – one of the most important companies producing music in the French Caribbean – and an imprint whose impact was strongly felt on the other side of the Atlantic as well! The core of these grooves is that compelling biguine rhythm that flowed from Guadeloupe – almost a mix of Latin and jazz, but with a different sort of vibe of its own – which was then interwoven with elements from Cuban, European, and African styles amidst the initial decade or so of recordings on this set! Debs had strong ties with Paris, and a bit with the West African scene – and their recorded legacy almost follows old colonial paths, but in reverse – creating this wonderful criss-crossing of cultures amidst their grooves. The package is wonderful – loads of vintage photos and great notes in the best Strut Records way – and titles include "Douce Kombass" by Henri Debs Quintet, "Mr Morin" by Joseph Lacides, "Lan Mise" by Geno Exilie, "Feeling Happy" by Cyril Dias Et Son Orchestre, "Ces P'Tits Je T'Aime" by Daniel Forestal Et Sa Guitare, "Assez Fait Cancan" by Guy Conquette, "Stanislas" by Eric Virgal, "Meringue Mondey" by Remy Mondey, "Si I Bon Di I Bon" by Le Ry-Co Jazz, "Salvana" by Dolor Et Les Diables Du Rhythme, and "Van Van" by Henri Guedon Et Les Contesta. Born Bad (France), Late 60s. New Copy ... $16.99
A whole host of cool Latin tracks from the French West Indies scene of the late 60s – not music that flowed to Guadeloupe or Martinique from Cuba or Puerto Rico – but fresh new sounds that were directly inspired by the boogaloo generation on the New York scene! The tracks here aren't straight Latin Soul – and they're hardly familiar Latin, either – and are instead this wonderful hybrid of elements, including some previous Caribbean modes – all fused into the tighter, shorter burst of energy that was unlocked once Joe Cuba and some of his generation discovered the smaller combo mode of Latin grooving! There's a nicely messed-up criss-crossing of sounds going on here – not the same as, but with similar energy to the Spanish Harlem scene at the time – on cuts that include "Jerk Vide" by David Martial, "Mais Tu Sais" by Dany Play, "Je Voudrais Danser Avec Toi" by Les Bois Sirop, "Sauvagement Sexy" by Gaby Siarras, "Sekirite" by Maurice Alcindor, "Tu Bois Beaucoup" by Le Ry-Co Jazz, "Disque La Raye" by Joby Valente, "Ou Que Di Moin" by Monsieur X, and "Ou Pas Z'Amis En Moin" by Henri Debs. Expansion (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
A great volume in this really unique series – a set that delivers the laidback grooves promised in the title, but often from sources that are quite unusual too! Most of the cuts are soul numbers – including a few underground gems that you'll recognize – but there's also work from other areas too, including a few contemporary numbers mixed in with 70s tracks – which creates this wonderful criss-crossing of modes and spirits, and really extends the collection out past previous volumes! As before, there's a very positive vibe throughout – and titles include "Children Of The Night" by Jones Girls, "You Will Rise" by Sweetback, "Moondance" by Bobby McFerrin, "One" by Lesette Wilson, "I Think It's Going To Rain Today" by Judy Collins, "The Picutre" by Ola Onabule, "Let The Music Play" by Collective Peace, "Stay With Me Til Dawn" by Judy Tzuke, "Love Is The Answer" by Englad Dan & John Ford Coley, "Programmed For Love" by Dunn Pearson, "Time Flies" by Kazu Matsui Project with Robben Ford, "Bluz 4 Eyes" by Buford Powers, "Riding High" by Faze-O, "Groove With You" by Isley Brothers, and "Flight Of The Blackbyrd" by Zo with Phonte. Stax/Craft, Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 19.99
An overdue look at a very cool record label – the short-lived Gospel Truth imprint, which was an outlet for the more spiritual side of Stax Records in the early 70s! The music is gospel, but often has plenty of the best Memphis soul elements of more popular Stax/Volt work of the time – and there's a nice criss-crossing of artists going on here – so that you'll get some gospel singers moving into very soulful territory, and some soul artists trying their hand at music that's a bit more righteous overall! And while albums by The Rance Allen Group on the label have been reissued over the years, this is the first time anyone's pulled together the much more obscure 45s – which gives us a much bigger picture of the label at work. The set features 34 tracks in all – and titles include "Don't Let The Green Grass Fool You" by Reverend W Bernard Avant, "He's Mine" by Jacqui Verdell, "At The Feet Of The Master" by Blue Aquarius, "I'm A Child Of The King" by The People's Choir Of Operation Push, "Reflections" by Louise McCord, "We're The Salt Of The Earth" by Rance Allen Group, "Ride Out The Storm" by Joshie Jo Armstead, "If The Shoe Fits Wear It" by The 21st Century, "Magnificent Sanctuary Band" by Rev Maceo Woods, "Hot Line To Jesus" by Rance Allen Group, "I Got The Vibes" by Joshie Jo Armstead, "Consider Me" by Terry Lynn Community Choir, "Keep My Baby Warm" by Charles May & Annette May Thomas, and "Do It Yourself" by Jimmy Jones. A specially focused set of this excellent series – one that deals with the surprisingly large amount of important work that was coming out of West Berlin during the 70s – music that was maybe even more significant, given that it was created behind the walls that encircled the scene at the time! As with the other volumes, the 2CD package is filled with gems – a few cuts by bigger names, but also some more obscure numbers – presented here with heavy notes, and in a way that really shows the more complex criss-crossings of culture that were taking place in the musical hotpot of West Berlin during the cold war. Titles include "Don't Send Me Your Money" by Karthago, "Gamma Ray" by Birth Control, "Saat" by Emtidi, "Eternity" by Mythos, "Light & Darkness Light" by Ash Ra Temple, "Children's Games" by Os Mundi, "Germanistan" by Dissidenten, "Walky Talky" by Harmonia, "Ways Of Changes" by Klaus Schulze, "Human Being 1 (edit)" by Human Being, "Regenmacher" by Hans Joachim Roedelius, "Halt Dich An Deiner Liebe Fest" by Ton Steine Scherben, and "Nostalgie" by Lokomotiv Kreuzberg. Comb & Razor, Late 70s/1980s/1990s/2000s. New Copy 2LP ... $25.99 28.98
One of the more unusual strands of Nigerian music you'll ever hope to hear – a surprisingly strong legacy of country-influenced music from the West African scene – but with a unique vibe that's quite far from the familiar modes of Nashville! As with African funk or blues modes, there's a special kind of criss-crossing that goes on when American styles are taken up in a new situation – so although these guys are playing acoustic guitar, going for a bit of twang, and echoing some elements of country – many tracks come across with a very different quality, and almost remind us more of some South African or Australian styles we've heard. Lyrics are in English throughout, and titles include "The Seed Of Love" by Actor Alile, "Concert Fever" by Dedication, "No More Love In This Town" by Rennie Cottonheart, "Another Day" by Ogak Jay Oke, "Roots" by Henry Pedro, "Never Be In A Hurry" by Stanley Edet, "Going Back To My Wife" by Emma Ogosi, "Be In Your Arms" by Poor Charley Akaa, and "Dark As A Dungeon" by Gnonnas Pedro. Soul Jazz (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $32.99 36.99
A fantastic collection of lesser-known gems from the 70s scene in Nigeria – music that's a great counterpart to better-remembered Afro Funk and soul from international giants like Fela Kuti and King Sunny Ade! This set digs deep, and is a nicelly expanded version of a set that Soul Jazz issued years back as a limited edition 7" single box for Record Store Day – presented here with more music, and a detailed set of notes – really getting at the special scene that was taking place in Nigeria at the time, as the nation was rising to the top of the African scene with a fantastic criss-crossing of musical modes! There's definitely plenty of the funk promised in the title, and the "rock" is usually of the funky kind with great guitar work – and a few later cuts even pick up the pace with a bit of disco, but more in the fast-funk mode, and hardly the slick stuff of the American scene. Titles include "Africans Must Unite" and "Shake Hands" by Geraldo Pino, "We'll Get Home" by The Wings, "E Ye Ika Se" by Alhagi Prof Kollington Ayinala, "Kassa Kpa Sama Kpa" by Colomach, "Beware" by MFB, "You Are The One" by Tony Grey & The Ozimba Messengers, "Single Boy" by The Wings, "Sugar Baby" by Don Bruce & The Angels", "Power To The People" by Geraldo Pino, "Igba Alusi" by Original Wings, "Dance Of The Elephants" by Sonny Okosunds Ozziddi, and "Oba Erediauwa I" by Sonny Okosuns. A really great idea for a collection – one that brings together postwar modern music in all of its many formats – from avant jazz, to early electronics, to Indian music, 20th Century classical, and even a bit of straighter jazz moments too! The package is very ear-opening – as it offers the chance to hear instrumentalists next to compositional talents that had inspired them – and the collection provides a way to hear different strains of sonic experimentation that were sometimes running parallel to each other, sometimes criss-crossing in strange ways. Strut (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99
This ain't Chicago, but the sound here owes plenty to the Windy City as well – as the collection documents an amazing criss-crossing of cultural modes that occurred when early UK house musicians took the sound of the underground into the bigger British club scene! In a way, this music's a third chapter in a journey that began when the post-disco American underground were digging the styles of the British electronic generation – then began to craft their own music with early house productions from Chicago and Detroit. These rose in such popularity with UK listeners, that by the end of the 80s, the grooves reversed themselves, and flowed back over the Atlantic – inspiring musicians like these to take the best elements of American house music, particularly Chicago acid, and push it even further into something new! And while the generation yielded plenty of lame tracks and crossover pop, this set shows the real deal – those excellent initial singles that made digging UK singles almost as great as US ones, at least for a brief while. 2LP package features 10 titles that include "Take Me High (mansion mix)" by Colm III, "Show Me What You Got (acid mix part 1)" by SLF, "Jealousy & Lies" by Julian Jonah, "Where's The Love Gone (rmx)" by Julie Stapleton, "Safety Zone" by Exocet, "Pressure Dub" by Ability II, "1666 (pyro-maniac mix)" by MD Emm, "Free To Be" by Window Smashers, "Twin Tub" by Return Of The Living Acid, and "Crashing" by Baby Ford. Now Again, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $10.99 24.98
Fantastic sounds for fans of funk and rock alike – music from the freaky, fuzzy 70s scene in Zambia – a place where styles effortlessly criss-crossed to really produce something new and unique! The work here is often heavy on fuzz guitars, but also has some wickedly soulful basslines and drums – so that although the tunes can be psych-styled, they're also pretty darn funky too – often at a level that's a bit like the Nigerian Afro Funk of the time, but much grittier and more righteous! The quality of the music and scene is explored in depth in the package – which includes a very detailed booklet of notes and photos – all to support the selection of music, which may well be the hippest so far from the Now Again label – and that's really saying a lot, if you know their other titles! ✨✧ Keith JarrettExpectations ... CD
Columbia/Legacy, 1972. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
CD

One of the coolest records we've ever heard from this legendary Argentine pianist – a set that has Jorge Lopez Ruiz playing lots of Fender Rhodes, and mixing it in with both rootsy Latin percussion and a number of other keyboards too! The set's almost a South American version of some of Herbie Hancock's work with the Headhunters – with more traditional percussion passages in the mix, but blended with sounds that include Arp and mini-moog too – which gives the whole thing a criss-crossing vibe that alternates from the surface of the planet to the deeper ranges of the cosmos! Fremeaux & Associates (France), Mid 30s. New Copy 4CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A huge amount of work from a reedman we'd never heard before – Martinique-born Alexandre Stellio – a hell of a clarinet player, and one who effortlessly weaves together island rhythms and early strands of jazz! All of the recordings here were done in Paris during the mid 30s, and provide a great illustration of the way that the crumbling French colonial empire was allowing all sorts of unusual criss-crossing in sound – in this case, the already-strong Parisian love of jazz mixed with the influence of new phrasings, colors, and rhythms from the French Caribbean – very much in the spirit that would soon become known as biguine! Stellio recorded a surprising amount of music during these years – and the set brings together every session with detailed notes and excellent sound – recordings that are all awash with his amazingly deft, edgey reed lines over romping rhythms, piano, and guitar – the last of which has some slight echoes of Parisian swing. 85 tracks in all – and notes in French and English! A great collection of tracks – and one of the first chances for most of us to hear the funkier side of sounds from Peru! The work isn't as full-on funky as Brazilian grooves from the time, but does share a very strong influence from American styles – and really goes way past any cliches of pan pipes you might have for Peruvian music – to a more complicated world of criss-crossing styles that echoes more creative moments from Columbia as well. Mad music from the Dutch scene of the 70s – music recorded either in The Netherlands, or the Dutch part of Belgium – pulled together here in a collection that's filled with ear-opening funky gems! The music here isn't straight soul, funk, or jazz – but rather criss-crossing musical styles that often have a little bit of each – often with these qualities that remind us of better-known soundtrack or folk-funk songs from the time – but which take on very different qualities, given the difference in language! There's plenty of great drums throughout, loads of killer keyboards, and basslines that can make just about any sort of song a funky nugget – and as with other titles on the Sdban label, the whole thing's a real revelation – a gateway to music that we never would have discovered otherwise – but now find that we can't live without. Habibi Funk, 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dusko Goykovich with Nathan Davis & Mal WaldronSwinging Macedonia ... LP
Enja/Be! (Germany), 1966. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Pat MethenyRoad To The Sun ... LP
BMG, 2021. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Really beautiful work from Pat Metheny, but a set that showcases his work more as a composer than a performer – two longer tracks that both have a different sound than his regular material! ✨✧ Rim Kwaku Obeng & The BelieversToo Tough/I'm Not Going To Let You ... CD
Sum Sum/BBE (UK), 1983. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Shine The Ladies", "Love Me For Real", "I'm Not Going To Let You", "Peace Of Mind", and "I'm A Song Writer". CD

✨✧ Andrew Wartts & The Gospel StorytellersThere Is A God Somewhere ... LP
Champ, Mid 70s. Sealed (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of those rare gospel albums that sounds nothing like conventional gospel – and which instead is a wonderful criss-crossing of soul, funk, and spirit – all guided by an artist who's as righteous as his message! The set was recorded in Nashville, and has a nicely laidback approach – with lead vocals from Andre Wartts, in a raspy style that almost owes a bit to Curtis Mayfield – especially in the way that Curtis could easily shift between the secular and spiritual, and always make the whole thing sound incredibly personal. Yet there's also some currents of jazz, some moments of funk, and a really collaborative approach to the album – as the Gospel Storytellers are clearly a very close-knit, intimate group – one who really come alive when some of the backup vocalists join Andre's lead. A very special set – even if you don't normally buy gospel albums – with titles that include "None Greater Than John", "What Is The Name", "Rich Man Poor Man", "In My Father's House", "Can You Say Yeah", and "One Day In Paradise". ✨✧ WitchIn The Past (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Now Again, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Tripped-out and wonderful sounds from Witch – served up in this excellent early record from the Zamrock kings of the 70s! Lyrics are in English, and have these dark tones that work perfectly with the group's offbeat guitar and organ lines – sometimes mixed here with acoustic guitar that changes things up from the fuzzier sound of their debut a bit – yet which still maintains a definitely trippy feel! The style isn't really psyche, but isn't Afro Funk either – and almost has some of the unique criss-crossing of modes you'd find in the hippest South American groups of the time. Titles include "Mushed Potatoe", "It's Alright", "Chance", "Young Lady", "Living In The Past", and "She Is Mine". LP, Vinyl record album

Soul Jazz (UK), 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Images of the Caribbean in many styles – from the striking color image on the front, to vintage black and white shots throughout the book – all at a level that really illuminates the criss-crossing cultures of the island scene! The book's got a wonderfully sharp sensibility – as it mixes images of vacation paradise with rural poverty, American tourists with ongoing slavery, local ritual with political overthrow – all in a series of wonderfully well-chosen photographs! The book was put together by Stuart Baker – who's done so many other great books and records for Soul Jazz – and text is by Paul Gilroy, author of There Ain't No Black In The Union Jack. ✨✧ VariousAfrica Airways 4 – Disco Funk Touchdown 1976 to 1983 (with bonus download) ... LP
Africa Seven (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We've had some great trips on Africa Airways in recent years – and this sweet fourth set proves once again that the fun lies in the journey, not the destination! As before, the cuts here share a lot more with American funk than you might think – especially the tight late 70s style with lots of basslines at the bottom, and some warmly jazzy currents in the instrumentation – which often serve to provide a superb setting for the vocals over the top – sometimes just sing-song chorus bits, but merged perfectly with the grooves! Tracks here come from French labels like Fiesta and Sonodisc, and there's definitely some of that criss-crossing between West African and Parisian modes going on – on titles that include "Sun Explosion" by Manu Dibango, "Nassa Nassa" by Uta Bella, "Nimele Bolo" by Charly Kingson, "Africain" by Momo Joseph, "Biram" by Kemayo & K-System, "Soul Magabe" by Pierre Didy Tchakounte, "Funny Saga" by The Monsters, and "Tinini Yanana" by Jake Sollo. ✨✧ VariousMogadisco – Dancing Mogadishu – Somalia 1972 to 1991 (with bonus download) ... LP
Analog Africa (Germany), 1970s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A mountain of music from the scene in Somalia during the 70s and 80s – all of it pulled from the vast archives of Radio Mogadishu, and showing a wonderful range of expression at the time! The music here is all pretty darn funky and soulful – as you'd expect from a collection on Analog Africa – but there's also some great criss-crossing of cultural elements taking place here, both in time and space – a shift in electric instrumentation from the 70s to the 80s, and an openness to other styles of rhythms too – even a bit of reggae and dub from time to time! Yet even when things are more straightly funky, they're never too straightforward – as the music bristles with all these unusual touches and sweet instrumental twists and turns – always keeping things interesting throughout. As always with the label, there's a fantastic set of notes – a big booklet that also recounts the struggle to reissue this music, with a fair bit of Somali history and culture too – all in support of titles that include "Daraadaa Muxibo" by Dur Dur Band, "Sirmaqabe" by Iftin Band, "Godonimada Jira" by Bakaka Band, "Ladaney" by Dur Dur Band, "Hoobeya" by Shimaali & Killer, "Baayo" by Mukhtar Ramadan Iidi, "Hab Isii" by Omar Shooli, "Waakaa Helaa" by F Qazzim & Shareero, "Il Ooy Aniga" by Ifitin Band, "Geesiyada Halgamayow" by Bakaka Band, and "Check Up Your Head" by Mukhtar Ramada Iidi. ✨✧ Aphrodite's ChildEnd Of The World ... CD
Philips (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant criss-crossing of pop modes in late 60s Europe – and the first album from Greek rock supergroup Aphrodite's Child! Although later work by the trio was a fair bit more heady, the approach here is more focused psychedelic pop – done in styles that echo strongly with some of the late 60s styles coming out of the Parisian scene, which is where the group were working at the time. Lyrics, though, are sung mostly in English – which gives the record a bit of a Brit psychedelic feel – but there's some other elements here that are also strongly the group's own. A young Demi Roussos sings lead vocals and plays guitar, and new age maestro Vangelis plays organ and percussion with a sound that's quite different than any of his later work! Titles include "End Of The World", "Day Of The Fool", "Valley Of Sadness", "Rain & Tears", "Mister Thomas", "You Always Stand In My Way", and "The Shepherd & The Moon". CD

✨✧ KokoloHeavy Hustling ... CD
Record Kicks (Italy), 2009. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An amazing new sound from Kokolo – one that takes their Afro Funk groove, and turns it on a host of James Brown classics – all with a result that's completely unique! The album's hardly a copycat of James' original style – and instead, it reworks his funky favorites with a complicated approach to rhythms – one that shows a rich criss-crossing between JB and Fela modes, almost an echoing amplification of the 70s influences that were passing back and forth between the US and African funk scenes! The vocals are something else entirely – as rhythmic as the grooves, with a quality that isn't as all-out soulful as James – but in a good way, as this helps them simmer down nicely with the instrumentation, and throw in a whole new level of counterpoint to the music. We're honestly stunned – quite surprised and impressed at this turn that Kokolo has taken, reaching forward for a sound that nobody else has touched. Titles include versions of "Mind Power", "The Popcorn", "Soul Power", "The Grunt", "Think", "Bring It Up", and "It's A New Day". CD

✨✧ Alfonso LovoLa Gigantona ... CD
Numero, 1976. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Funky fusion with plenty of Latin touches – a really compelling set from the Nicaraguan scene of the 70s! The album's got the same criss-crossing of influences you'd hear in some of the best Bay Area projects of this type – no surprise since Jose Chepito Areas is a key member of the group on percussion – and there's a wonderful blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation, rootsy rhythms and free-thinking fusion – all of which make this sweet little set feel like some lost Impulse Records gem from the early 70s – particularly the label's releases that get a bit more global in their outlook! Alfonso Lovo plays loads of sweet Fender Rhodes, and also sings a bit – and titles include "Nueva Segiova", "Firebird Feathers", "Rio San Juan Drums", "Los Conquistadores", and "Tropical Jazz". CD

✨✧ Henri TexierVarech ... LP
JMS (France), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
French bassist Henri Texier has given us some really amazing music over the decades – but this rare gem from the late 70s may be one of his grooviest records overall – and has this criss-crossing of styles that's really fantastic! Texier doesn't just play acoustic bass, but also electric, percussion, and even a bit of oud – which he uses to create this cool global jazz sound, but in a way that's very unique – partly because a number of the tracks have wordless vocals from Henri, kind of floating over the top and really bringing a sense of majesty to the music! If you love Texier's work on acoustic bass, don't worry – as the record also still features plenty of superb work on that instrument too, really captured here with a strong yet subtle sonic quality. Titles include "L'Elephant", "Quand Le Blues S'En Ira", "Les La Bas", "Angele", "Mr Donald Cerise", "L'Ultime Danse", and "Varech". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousChebran – French Boogie 1980 to 1985 ... LP
Born Bad (France), Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ VariousCountry Funk Vol 2 – 1967 to 1974 ... CD
Light In The Attic, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A great criss-crossing of modes at the end of the 60s – music that has roots in country, but which comes off with plenty of funk and soul as well – in styles that were burning strong from LA on eastward, all the way across the south at the time! Some of the grooves here might fall into the "swamp rock" mode of the time – while others showcase hip LA artists mixing rootsy elements with tighter studio production – and a few more have genre-crossing country artists trying on some more soulful modes for good measure. The range of work is really great – and quite surprising, too – and the whole thing's got a great look that really illuminates the music within. Titles include "Northeast Texas Women" by Willis Allan Ramsey, "Nobody" by Larry Williams & Johnny Watson, "Collection Box" by Thomas Jefferson Kaye, "Me & Mr Hohner" by Bobby Darin, "Hunger Child Blues" by Townes Van Zant, "California Women" by Hoyt Axton, "Pay Day Give Away" by Bill Wilson, "Shotgun Willie" by Willie Nelson, "Cajun Moon" by JJ Cale, "Sumpin Funky Going On" by Donnie Fritts, and "Don't Let Me Down" by Dillard & Clark.
