✨✧ Creative SourceCreative Source ... LP
Sussex, 1973. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
The massive first album from Creative Source – a really unique group who really helped push the ensemble vocal mode forward in the 70s! The mixed male/female lineup recalls similar groups of the late 60s – but Creative Source also have a deeper, hipper style that comes through right away – a good ear for jazz in their phrasing, and an ability to get past any of the hoke of more sing-song gal/guy groups. The tunes are very progressive, and the album features sublime arrangements from Skip Scarborough – who's working here in a wonderful realization of the style he'd work later for so many other artists. The group does a classic rendition of Scarborough's "You Can't Hide Love", which was a hit for Earth Wind & Fire, plus nice covers of two tracks by Sussex labelmate Bill Withers – "Who Is He & What Is He To You" and "Let Me In Your Life". Also includes the group's own "Oh Love", which is a nice groover – plus "Magic Carpet Ride", "Wildflower", and "Lovesville". LP, Vinyl record album
(In fantastic shape! Includes the Sussex inner sleeve.)

✨✧ Creative SourceMigration (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Sussex/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great follow-up to the group's first hit LP on Sussex – not nearly as successful chart-wise, but a great display of their unique approach to group soul. The band's a quintet at this point, and their vocals are arranged by Skip Scarborough with that sweet compressed style that he was forging at the time. As on the first album, the band do a great job with a Bill Withers tune – and lay out a very hip reading of "Harlem" with some nice conga backing. The album also features a great funky reading of the Carole King cut "Corazon", an extended take on Scarborough's "I Just Can't See Myself Without You", and the original groovers "Keep On Movin" and "Migration", which both have that fuzzy guitar Sussex sound! Includes two bonus cuts. CD

✨✧ Isao SuzukiBlow Up ... CD
Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A really great little set from Japanese bassist Isao Suzuki – a rare player who goes way way past traditional modes of his chosen instrument, into richly creative territory that rivals the 70s experiments of Ron Carter! Like Carter, Suzuki's never content to just let the bass be a source in the background – and instead really foregrounds his wonderful work on both cello and acoustic bass – with a sprightly sound that's as groovy as it is rhythmic – a really great sense of flow that almost makes you feel the set's electric, even though Isao plays acoustic all the way through. The album also features great work by pianist Kunihiko Sugano – who hits some fuller notes that really crackle with energy, and which unleash a surprising amount of soul on the best numbers – and the quartet also features additional bass from Takashi Mizuhashi and drums from George Otsuka. Titles include the great title cut "Blow Up", plus "Aquamarine", "Like It Is", and "Low Flight". CD
(Part of the Three Blind Mice Supreme Collection!)

VariousTribal Rites Of The New Saturday Night – Brooklyn Disco 1974/1975 ... LP
Ace (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $29.99 34.99
A really cool record, and one that digs deep into the earliest days of the disco scene – that time in New York where there weren't any records being made as strictly "disco" cuts – and DJs had to make their pick of soul and funk records from a time when the music was really changing things up! The album's heavy on New York and Philly-based tracks, and some of the artists here are ones who'd had an earlier life in soul music, but were picking up the rhythms, adding in some larger arrangements, and creating grooves that really knocked the whole thing out of the park! The presentation here is based on a famous 1975 article that looked at the underground scene out in Brooklyn for New York magazine – later made famous as Saturday Night Fever – and as such, the tracks here are full of surprises, and very different than the usual disco-inspired compilation. Titles include "Just As Long As We're Together (single version)" by Gloria Scott, "After You've Had Your Fling" by The Intrepids, "Welcome To The Club" by Blue Magic, "Mellow Me" by Faith Hope & Charity, "Got To Get You Back" by Sons Of Robin Stone, "Date With The Rain (LP version)" by Eddie Kendricks, "Georgia's After Hours" by Richard Popcorn Wylie, "If That's The Way You Feel" by White Heat, "It's The Same Old Story" by Act 1, "Tell Me What You Want" by Jimmy Ruffin, "Night Of The Wolf" by Ivano Fossati, "The Whole Damn World Is Going Crazy" by John Gary Williams, "You Can't Hide Love" by Creative Source, "Wendy Is Gone" by Ronnie McNeir, "Free & Easy" by Satyr, and "Keep It Up" by Betty Everett. ✨✧ PocketsSo Delicious ... CD
Columbia/Expansion (UK), 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from Pockets – a group who started out more in a jazzy mode, but who here have emerged as a fully-formed, soaringly soulful group that's a perfect fit for the Kalmiba Productions style of the late 70s! As you probably know, Kalimba's the production arm of the Earth Wind & Fire empire – and Pockets fit here right in tight with their groove – a nice little sidebar, definitely with their own spirit – but filled with that sense of perfection that wraps together funk, soul, and jazz with equal emphasis on all three styles! There's some great harmony vocals in the mix too – crafted with the care of contemporaneous groups like Side Effect or Creative Source – and titles include "Your Heart's In Trouble", "Bye Bye", "Catch Me", "So Delicious", "How Do You Think It Feels?", "Charisma", and "Baby Are You Coming Home With Me". ✨✧ Rob MagillBlues Etudes ... CD
Kettle Hole, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Rob Magill's out to show just what a creative multi-instrumentalist he can be here – improvising on different instruments on every single track – and creating some real sonic magic in the process! Given the differing sound sources, there's a great sense of variety to the record – and Magill finds a way to express himself differently on each instrument, while still coming across with a relatively unified vibe – the same player with different voices, creating a core spirit for the album's sense of experimentation! Songs are titled aptly, and include "Bass Recorder", "Soprano Saxophone", "Clarinet & Electronics", "Tenor Saxophone", "Misc", and "Flute & Electronics". CD

✨✧ VariousSpirit Of France – Obscure, Rare Spiritual Jazz, Deep Folk, & Psych From The French Underground ... CD
Spiritmuse, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A much-needed look at the really magical world of music in France – a scene that's always seemed to exist in its own sort of space, especially during the late 70s/early 80s years when most of these tracks were recorded! The French scene had some famous free jazz at the start of the 70s, but there was also another strain of unique sounds that were beyond categorization or comparison – music that took some of the creative inspiration of jazz and turned it towards global sources, acoustic instruments, analogue electronics, and even French vocal styles – creating work that was not only years ahead of its time, but which also was often missed on the global market, because it was so hard to label and categorize! This set brings together some of the best of those moments – music that's maybe a great second step if you've already dug sounds on labels like Saravah or Futura/Marge – and the whole package is wonderful throughout – filled with titles that even we might have missed otherwise. Tracks include "Gaal" by Noco Music, "Les Crocodiles" by Catherine Derain, "Reve De Voyage" by Remy Couvez, "Sokoto" by Structures Sonores Lasry Baschet, "Loreley" by Pan Ra, "Mahabaratha Kali" by Adjenar Sidhar Khan, "Bujumbura Lyon" by Workshop De Lyon, "Arabia" by Dynamo, "Love Always" by Jef Gilson, and "Moving Waves" by Andre Fertier & Clivage.
