CreationWe Are Paintermen ... LP
Hit-Ton Schalllatten (Germany), 1967. Near Mint- ... $14.99
A gem of a record from one of the coolest UK groups of the 60s – served up here in a German release that maybe gives The Creation one of their most vibrant covers ever! Despite the European issue of the material, the tracks here are all Brit brilliance from the group and producer Shel Talmy – served up in their incredible blend of mod grooves, garagey rawness, and early psych production – sharp and tight at the same time, and years ahead of its time! Titles include "Can I Join Your Band", "Making Time", "Tom Tom", "Biff Bang Pow", "Painterman", and "Nightmares" – plus covers of "Cool Jerk", "Hey Joe", and "Like A Rolling Stone". 9th CreationBubble Gum ... LP
Rite Track/Past Due, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
A classic album of jazzed-up funk – the lasting legacy by this oft-sampled group! 9th Creation originally hailed from west of the Bay Area scene of the 70s – and this album was recorded in Oakland with the same sweet jazzy finish as work by some of the other big Northern California funk acts of the time – especially Pleasure, who with their sharp sense of a groove are probably the closest comparison to the group's sound. The album is best known for the cut "Bubble Gum" – a great number with lots of jazzy changes, and a modern funky groove that still sounds pretty darn fresh – but the whole album is totally great, and filled with plenty of other songs that have the same feel as the title cut! Tracks include "Sexy Girl", "Quit It", "Falling In Love", "We Need Love", and "Rule Of Mind". LP, Vinyl record album

9th CreationLove Crime EP ... LP
Track/Past Due, Early 80s. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99
A rare later set from 9th Creation – done after their funk classics in the 70s, and with a nicely updated sort of groove! Side one is the "dance side" – and has the group working with more beats and basslines than before, but still finding a great way to keep all their charms intact – that kind of playful, back/forth energy that always made their group efforts feel so great on record! Side two is the "love side" – and features two mellow numbers, but both with grooves that are gentle enough to make them quiet storm steppers! Four titles in all – "Love Crime", "Maybe", "She's The Kind", and "Bygones". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ 9th CreationSuperheroes ... LP
Hilltak, 1979. Very Good ... $8.99
Fantastic funk from 9th Creation – a group who really tighten up their sound for this record, but still stay as wonderful as before! There's a totally right-on-the-money vibe to the whole thing – like the best Wayne Henderson/At Home productions from the late 70s – or maybe that great Parliament moment when the group was trimming it down, but still finding a way to add in all these great elements around the edges! JD Burrise produced, and also handles the lead vocals – but the whole thing's a definite ensemble effort, and it's clear that these guys were having a hell of a time putting the record together in the studio – especially given all the sweet moments in the instrumentation – which hit some jazzy passages too. Titles include "Superheroes", "What's Shakin", "Got My Baby Back", "Shucks You're Fine", "I'd Do It Again", "Much Too Much", and the nice mellow number "Love is a Fantasy". Sweet and jazzy – very nice! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ 21st CreationBreak Thru ... LP
Gordy, 1978. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An obscure Motown group from the end of the 70s – 21st Creation had a strident uptempo group sound that reminds us of some of the more successful disco hits of Tavares from the same time. The arrangements are mostly club-oriented – handled by Willie Hutch, Gene Page, and Harold Johnson – and you can hear the group's style to best effect on tracks like their remake of Marvin Gaye's "After The Dance", Willie Hutch's "You Gotta Dance To My Music", or the hard grooving "Thanks For Saving Me". Not totally standout material, but with a few nice moments. Other tracks include "Funk Machine", "Tailgate", and "Baby, I'm For Real". LP, Vinyl record album

Numero, Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the great lost groups of the UK scene of the 60s – not lost to UK audiences, or to hipsters over the generations – but still an act that never made the impact on these shores that they should! The Creation are step in step right up there with early material by The Who or Small Faces – and share a similar groundbreaking re-fusion of American roots into a new London groove – all with searing guitars, clever wordplay, and a cutting-edge spirit that may well have kept them off our charts – but which makes them so great to discover all these many years later. You might have caught a few of their songs over the years – thanks to soundtrack placement from directors like Wes Anderson, or covers by many of their bigger fans. This 2LP set features 24 tracks in all, with remastering overseen by original producer Shel Talmy – and the set includes early sides by The Mark Four, mono versions, and new stereo mixes– plus a 16 page book with scores of photos, other images, session and discographical details, and a new essay too. Most folks know 9th Creation as a heavy funk band, but they're also pretty darn great on mellower moments too – working in all the complexity of their funky arrangements, but with a laidback vibe that's maybe even more impressive! "Mellow Music" definitely has that right sort of special balance – and it's backed here by "Step Ahead", which is more uptempo, and has a lot of cool keyboard elements – all given even more of a groove by producer Pat Gleeson! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ 9th CreationReaching For The Top ... LP
Prelude/Past Due, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Damn funky work from 9th Creation – a group who recorded this set for the mostly-disco Prelude label, but who still serve up the same heavy sound as their earlier work! There's a tightness here that few other groups can touch – that special magic that you can hear when a larger funk ensemble somehow manages to groove with the sharpness of a quartet – but with this fuller sound that really infuses the songs with a fantastic current of soul! The set's got a few mellower moments mixed in with the groovers – the sort of balance that only Earth Wind & Fire might have gotten this right – and there's also maybe a bit more of a spiritual vibe to some of the lyrics, in a mighty nice way. Titles include "Come Back Home", "He's Coming", "A Good Time", "The Time Has Come", "Reaching For The Top", and "It Ain't Right". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantastic music from 9th Creation – an album that was recorded in the early 80s, but never issued at the time – which is a heck of a shame, as it's some of the best work we've ever heard from the group! The album's got a great blend of funk and soul – with a deepening of both the vocal and instrumental arrangements, at a level that really keeps things interesting throughout – and which unlocks these righteous elements in the music that we totally love! There's a fair bit of uptempo tracks, but these are mixed with great mellower moments too – with a vibe that's maybe a bit like the last few Leroy Hutson albums on Curtom – which is mighty fine praise from us. The notes indicate that only cassette copies were made of the sessions, but Past Due have done a wonderful job of bringing the music back to life with surprisingly strong fidelity – and titles include "More & More", "Always Be Lovers", "Let It Shine", "Beautiful Lady", "Music Is My Pen & Paper", and "A Step Ahead". Arista/Muzak (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... About December 15, 2019
Reedman Oliver Lake at his most creative – stepping out here on a sublime set of 70s improvisations – all put together with a really spiritual feel! There's a very open, collaborative feel to the music – and the set was recorded in St Louis, at a time when Lake was a key part of that city's scene – and who here also seems able to attract some other musicians from the AACM in Chicago as well! As a result, the album's a wonderful document of the new ideas bursting forth at the start of the 70s – that richly creative moment when local scenes were coming together in various cities to find new ways of jazz beyond Coltrane and Dolphy – giving a player like Lake some of the most imaginative outlets of his career. Oliver plays alto, soprano, flute, and other small instruments – and other players include Baikida Carroll and Floyd Leflore on trumpets, Joseph Bowie on trombone, John Hicks on piano, Clovis Bordeaux on electric piano, Don Officer on bass, Charles Bobo Shaw on drums, and Don Moye on congas too. Titles include "Africa", "Tse Lane", "Eriee", "Zip", and "Electric Freedom". CD

Creation/Cherry Red (UK), 1988. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $18.99
Pure genius from a group who kept on growing strongly over the relatively short span of their career – maybe under-sung heroes at the time of their release, at least on this side of the Atlantic – but one of the few truly classic groups we can think of from the decade, at least with a recorded legacy this strong! The songs are as creatively distinct as anything every put forth by Morrissey and The Smiths – but in a very unique sort of way, with the guidance of mainman Lawrence firmly guiding the sound with his vocals amidst the wonderful songswirl of Hammond organ and guitar. Titles include "Apple Boutique", "Ivory Past", "Until The Fools Get Wise", "Bitter End", "How Spook Got Her Man", "Christopher Street", "Under A Pale Light", and "Don't Die On My Doorstep". A gem of a record from Felt – one that has them complicating the sound they first brought to the Creation Records label – stretching out some of the songs a bit, and working with art rock legend Mayo Thompson of the Red Krayola in the production booth! The use of organ continues to be wonderfully strong – really giving the group a punctuation to their songs that their earlier material never had – but there's also still that great sense of overall sound that always made them so unique, and which works perfectly for the creative songwriting talents of Lawrence. Tracks include "Declaration" "Silver Plane", "She Lives By The Castle", "Stained Glass Windows In The Sky", "Riding On The Equator", "Dark Red Birds". CD comes in a gatefold sleeve, packaged in a 7" box – which includes a picture sleeve version of the "Ballad Of The Band" 7 inch single, 2 reproductions of gig flyers, a 2-sided wall poster, and 4 buttons – all with a sticker on the box that's signed by Lawrence! MomusCreate 2 – Recreate (Hippopotamomus/Voyager/Timelord/bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Creation/Cherry Red (UK), Early 90s. Used 3 CDs ... $14.99
A trio of late Creation Records albums from Momus – each with bonus tracks too! Hippopotamomus is a set that Momus dedicated to one of his big musical inspirations, Serge Gainsbourg – at a time when so few of his contemporaries had yet to rediscover Serge's genius! And yet like all of Momus' best influences, the power of Gainsbourg isn't slavishly delivered here – but instead taken at a very deep level, and fused into the singer's already uncanny ability to delivery an offbeat tune. Most of the instrumentation is quite spare and electronic – which brings a bit of coldness to the record that differs from some of Momus' earlier, more acoustic albums – and lyrics are sometimes spoken as much as sung, which adds a further sinister vibe. Titles include "Marquis Of Sadness", "A Monkey For Sallie", "The Painter & His Model", "Bluestocking", "I Ate A Girl Right Up", "Michelin Man", and "Pornography". Voyager is a record in which it might be said that Momus discovers modern rhythms, especially the strong influence from house that was being felt in the UK mainstream of the time – but, as with all of the singer's classic albums, the presentation here is something completely different and unique! The production and instrumentation are definitely a cut above for the one-man act – with these beautiful washes of sound amidst the beats and warmer keyboards – all providing a perfect setting for the cosmically expansive nature of the lyrics – which seem to deal with future thoughts and spacious themes more than usual. Titles include "Vocation", "Virtual Reality", "Summer Holiday 1999", "Afterglow", "Voyager", and "Spacewalk". Timelord is an album that has one of the strangest covers that Momus ever gave us – photographed by Pierre et Gilles – and a set that also features some of the most subtle songwriting from the singer too! The song style follows from the more electric modes that Momus had been using during his later Creation years, but the presentation is also a lot more sophisticated too – so that things are abstracted a bit, which warms them up nicely – matched by vocals that are sometimes a bit distant in their perspective, but which also give uncanny clarity to the subject matter. Songs include "Elightenment", "Breathless", "Suicide Pact", "You've Changed", "Landrover", and the beautiful "Christmas On Earth". 3CD set features bonus notes – and 10 bonus tracks that include "Smart Drugs", "The Mechanical Arm", "President Of Love", "Life Of An Office Worker", "I'm Still Trying", "Things You Never Did", "Empress Of Hawaii", "Song Of The Traffic Crossing", "Je Suis Avec Le Christ", and "Summer Holiday 1999 (original)". Quite possibly the funkiest album ever by the groundbreaking British group A Certain Ratio – filled with lots of heavy post-disco bass and percussion, all rattling away with the energy of some of the best work on Ze Records a the time! The group's dark moody feel is still largely in place, but by the time of this record, they've learned to play their instruments a bit more – and really have a way of twisting around all the inspirations they've lifted from American funk and Jamaican dub! The album features a great long take on the track "Knife Slits Water" – one of the group's catchiest tunes ever – plus the cuts "Below The Canal", "Rialto", "Rub Down", "Skipscada", "Crystal", and "Lucinda". Incus/Honest Jons (UK), 1982. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $29.99
An amazing pairing of talents – one that yields some fantastic moments of improvisation! Cyro Baptista is a percussionist by nature, but here he also plays the Brazilian cuica – a unique instrument that has a single bowed string, in addition to more percussive elements – in a way that makes his performance on that instrument a perfect companion to Bailey's incredibly deft, endlessly imaginative work on the strings of the guitar! The pair work here with a clarity that seems to capture each unusual twist and turn, and moment of spontaneous creation – thanks, in part, to the recording efforts of Martin Bisi – and although we can't tell from the notes, it seems as if Baptista might be playing some other percussion instruments as well. Titles include "Tonto", "Joga Toca", "Quanto Tempo", "Polvo", "Toca Joga", and "Rio Branco". 2LP version features a full album of bonus improvisations – all previously unreleased! Spare sounds get taken to the next dimension – as the music of Adama Barry is presented in both its original creation, and in a set of remixes by Henrik Schwarz, Bugge Wesseltoft, Prins Thomas, Mental Overdrive, and others! The album's got an unusual approach – as two-thirds of the tracks just feature Burkina Faso musician Barry – who sings, and plays a range of regional instruments, with help from Solo Diarra on djembe and balafon – all on these very spare tracks that are beautiful and haunting. Then, on six of the album's fifteen tracks, the remixers step in and electrify things – often adding beats, keyboard lines, and reworking the acoustic elements in a variety of ways. Soul Jazz (UK), 1996. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
An underground classic from the London scene – a record that was hugely important to us in the early days of Dusty Groove, and which is still completely tremendous all these many years later! At the time, the album was the sort of ambitious undertaking that nobody else would have done – pre-Cinematic Orchestra, pre-Nostalgia 77, pre-any of those other groups that were inspired by vintage soundtracks, David Axelrod, and all sorts of higher ideas in groovy music! Chris Bowden is a saxophonist at the core – and a jazz-based one too – but he works here with these incredible arrangements of his own creation, folding in both funky and fulfilling elements – heavy drums, percussion, and keyboards – but also some great string passages, and even surprisingly strong use of clarinet at times – creating these snakey elements that offset his own soulful lead. The album was a landmark at the time – even if it was missed by most of the planet – and it's still tremendously powerful throughout – with titles that include "Forbidden Fruit", "Natural Selection", "Deaf Out", "Telescopic Three", "Sane", "Angel Falls", "Solo", "Love Lies Bleeding", "Epsilon", and "Time Capsule". RCA, 1966. Sealed ... $18.99
Beautiful sounds from Gary Burton – a seminal 60s session that really has the vibist coming into his own, and finding that new path towards musical expression that would flower even more strongly in the 70s! The album has Burton really strengthening up his sense of chrome – matching the boldness of other important 60s vibes players on the rise – like Karel Velebny or Bobby Hutcherson – but also working this really special magic in the way he lets each note resonate in the air – often with a much longer decay on the sound than the actual moment of its creation! Burton also plays a bit of piano on the record, overdubbed with his vibes – but in a way that's quite different than the vibes/piano combo of earlier acts – like the MJQ, or George Shearing Quintet – thanks to work from Steve Swallow on bass and Larry Bunker on percussion. Tracks include "Six Nix Quix Flix", "The Sunset Bell", "Deluge", "Chega De Saudade", and "Falling Grace". LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic, 1981. Very Good ... $8.99
A catchy bass heavy number with serious dancefloor appeal that doesn't sacrifice any of it's slick modern soul production, in our opinion, the best cut off Change's sophomore LP, Miracles, when the group was still working in a post disco, 80s groove mode that didn't betray the fact that they were largely a studio creation. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Gee, Late 50s/Early 60s. Near Mint- ... $24.99
A wonderful collection of late 50s vocal group material – all of it originally recorded for the excellent Gee label, one of the best NY indies of the time! The tracks here are as tight as anything in the pop realm at the time, but still really retain all the rougher, more personal vibe of the streetcorner years – a quality that's furthered by the relatively sparse instrumentation on most numbers – usually just a small rhythm combo to back up the soaring vocals! There's a few big hits here, mixed with more obscure numbers – and despite the teen cover, the album's got a rock-solid, all-soul vibe throughout. Titles include "Come Back My Love" by The Wrens, "Little Girl Of Mine" and "Can't We Be Sweethearts" by The Cleftones, "Nature's Creation" by The Valentines, "Three Wishes" and "My Memories Of You" by The Harptones, and "Gee" and "I Love You So" by The Crows. As you'd guess from the title and cover, the emphasis here is on stories and bits involving Fat Albert – the Cosby creation that was then playing big time in cartoon format on Saturday morning TV! The routines are actually a heck of a lot better than the cartoon – and titles include "Fat Albert's Car", "Fat Albert Plays Dead", "Fat Albert Got A Hernia", "My Wife & Kids", "My Dad's Car", "My Brother, Russell", and "Fernet Branca". A totally groovy little group from late 60s Poland – one who work here in a "beat mass" of their own creation – a totally rocking album that seeks to remake the Catholic mass in a flurry of fast drums, riffing guitars, and mod keyboards! The territory is nothing new – the Electric Prunes, David Axelrod, Mind Garage, and other acts tried the same thing over in the US – but this one's maybe a bit different, as it's coming more from a beat group sound – so has less of the too-heady energy of some of the rest, and instead explodes with a vibe that's more mod 60s London than you might be expecting! The organ gets in plenty of great moments, and the drums keep things moving strongly – on titles that include "Kyrie", "Gloria", "Graduale", "Credo", "Agnus Dei", "Sanctus", "Communio", and "Introitus" – plus Pastoralki selections "Historia O Boznymn Narodzeniu", "Przjaciele Moi", and "Chwalcie Imie Pana". Confront (UK), 2019. New Copy 2CDs ... $18.99
A beautiful tribute to the late John Coltrane – presented here in a double-length set of recordings taken from a special performance at London's Cafe Oto! The core talent here is tenorist Paul Dunmall – who plays on most of the selections and does a really fantastic job of evoking the spirit and power of Coltrane, while also showing how much his influence has continued to transform in the five decades since his passing. Dunmall works with his Sun Ship Quartet that includes Howard Cottle on second tenor, Olie Brice on bass, and Anthony Bianco on drums – on versions of "Amen", "Dearly Beloved", and "Sun Ship" – all of which have a very different vibe with this two-sax lineup! The group is then augmented by the presence of Alan Skidmore on a third tenor, while Dunmall picks up a soprano too – on versions of "Attaining" and "Ascent". The set also features an original tune – "May There Be Peace & Love & Perfection Throughout All Creation O God" – by the trio of Julie Kjaer on flute, and Mark Wastell and Stale Liavik Solberg on percussion. And the set concludes with a reading of "Ascension" that includes all the players united together! CD

The rhythms and production are more contemporary than some of Jackson's classics, but that also maybe gives the whole thing a crackle that keeps it interesting too – partly because so many of these songs were a bit under-discovered when the set was released. The song titles themselves give some idea of where Jackson's headspace was at during the creation of the album – and tracks include "Invincible", "Break Of Dawn", "Butterflies", "Threatened", "Heaven Can Wait", "2000 Watts", "Cry", "The Lost Children", "Unbreakable", "Heartbreaker", "Whatever Happens", "Privacy", and "Don't Walk Away". Some numbers here are straightforward hard rockers, but others have a more complex approach – not proggy, almost performative – like some of the trippier French material of the period, which almost had a communal creation sort of vibe. A tremendous effort from Mourning A BLKstar – a group who may be on their way to being the voice of a generation – as they work with an unabashed sense of righteous politics, funk, and soul – all taken to a higher plane in the process of creation! Plenty of folks are message-oriented in recent years, but these guys go things one better by working with a form that's often as powerful as their message – music that finds its own structure around the lyrical needs of the tunes – which sometimes creates a deeper drama in the lyrics, sometimes imbues them with a richness of spirit that's beyond description! A really amazing album from a French free jazz group who are really finding their way forward – issued in 1973, but already very different from most of the initial post-1968 recordings on the Parisian scene! The album features a concert recording, with three very long-spun tracks by the quartet – amazing improvisatory energy flowing between the bass if Didier Levallet, the drums of Jean My Truong, the electric piano and clavinet of Siegfried Kessler, and the mix of piccolo, bass clarinet, tenor, and sopranino sax of Jeff Seffer – who also blows this very cool "malabar" reed instrument of his own creation! From the information in the notes, it appears that the instrument is kind of an assemblage of smaller kalimbas – tuned pieces of metal over soundboards with hollow spaces – played simultaneously by Qamar with a really wonderful sound – haunting, and evocative, and even more stripped down than Phil Cohran's "On The Beach"! And yes, as you might guess, there's an offbeat feel to almost all the performances here – which stand as a great way of illustrating the deep respect for jazz history that Ra had, even though he was always pushing the music in different directions! There's a number of moments that are quite respectful of the melodies, while others are a bit more offbeat – and the work features Ra solo on one track, working with the bass of Ronnie Boykins and tenor of John Gilmore on the rest, plus work from drummer Clifford Jarvis and trumpeter Walter Miller on four titles. An undisputed treasure from the early 80s west coast scene – a trippy little record that was one of the shining jewels in the new psych underground – quite a shift from the LA hardcore sound of a few years before! Yet unlike some of their contemporaries, Rain Parade were hardly copping any sort of easy retro modes – as their approach here is leaner, maybe a bit colder, and almost influenced by post-punk styles in the same way that some of the better UK bands were at the time – almost as if there was a synchronous explosion of fuzzy energy between the group and the Creation Records generation to come. The whole thing holds up wonderfully over the years – maybe even more so, given the passage of time, and the legions of other groups who never made the music this well. A really great showcase for the continuing evolution of Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah – a musician who's become so much more than just a straight jazz trumpet with a soulful vibe – as you'll hear on this really compelling set! The music is even more expansive than Christian's recent trilogy for Ropeadope – especially in the rhythms, which are both earthily percussive, and very forward-thinking – kicked up way past standard jazz rhythms, and driven by a heck of a lot of percussion as well – including some from Scott himself! A classic of 70s avant spiritual jazz – issued on the tiny Sweet Earth label, which was also home to some very special records from Sun Ra and Marion Brown! Bassist David Wertman is a lot more obscure than those bigger names, but he was part of the New York loft jazz scene in those crucial mid 70s years – and had associations with Arthur Blythe, Billy Bang, Steve Reid, and other key members of the group – all heavyweights that Wertman can easily stand next to with the strength of the material on this set! The northern side of the UK scene finally gets its due – all with a sound that's a lot more exciting than the spare landscape pictured on the cover! The work is all from Scotland, and it's hardly the music of kilts and bagpipes – because nearly all these tracks had a huge influence on the British music scene down south – the kind of tracks that won over listeners on the John Peel Show, got rave reviews in NME and Melody Maker, and forever helped change the style at just about every step of the way from the punk years onwards! The package is a huge treasure trove of great sounds – as musically fantastic as it is a geographical marker – and honestly, we had no idea that so many of these artists were Scottish – as we usually just think of a few key 80s groups when we try to picture that scene. Instead, the book-like package has plenty of knowledge, notes, and pictures to offer – in support of 115 tracks by artists who run the gamut from early punk, through post-punk, power pop, nouveau psych, C86 charmers, Creation Records fuzz, and some of the new grooves that exploded at the end of the 80s. A pretty fantastic selection of rare disco tracks from the American underground – all of them infused with a spiritual message, but served up with grooves that go head to head with some of the best underground club of the time! The mix of positive energy and upbeat grooves is wonderful – and if you've ever heard the Clark Sisters club classic "You Brought The Sunshine", then you'll definitely know the spirit of these tunes! If you're worried about the message being one that you're not into, don't – because there's sort of a universal spirit going on here – one that gets past conventions of the church, and which really goes for a general uplifting message that's totally great – almost a precursor to some of the positive house in more recent decades. And speaking of house, there's less of that here than you'd expect – as most of the instrumentation and production are strongly in the best New York underground modes from the disco years – with less of any 80s or electro soul elements. Titles include "I Believe" by Calvin B Rhone, "Imitations" by Johnson Family Gospel Singers, "Change" by Wisdom, "On That Other Shore" by Harrison Jones & The Voices Of Harmony, "I've Been Converted" by The Converters, "Ain't No Way To Do Wrong" by New Creation, "Take It To The Streets" by Prophecy, "Let The Lord Come In Your Life" by Wisdom, "Keep The Fire" by Paradise, and "Jesus Is On The Mainline" by Mr Jesse R McGuire. Omega/Modern Harmonic, 1958. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
There's two sorts of heavenly bodies on the cover – but the real charms of the record lie inside, as the set's overflowing with incredible early theremin recordings! The album features spacey orchestral settings arranged by Warren Baker, and conducted by Andre Montero – plus fantastic work on the "electro theremin" by Paul Tanner – a different variation on the incredible post-war electronic instrument! The "electro theremin" was Tanner's own creation, and it works on a cool sliding principle that creates a lot of weird spacey dipping, turning, and soaring effects. The album's packaged in a lovingly heavy cover, with a nude "heavenly body" floating in space amidst a sea of bright colors! Titles include "Misty Moon Blues", "Out Of This World", "Holiday On Saturn", "20th Century Venus", and "Up To Jupiter". LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic blend of spiritual jazz styles and electronic elements – served up here by the trio of drummer Betamax, keyboardist Danalogue, and saxophonist King Shabaka – the last of whom you might recognize as Shabaka Hutchings from a host of other hip projects on the contemporary London scene! Shabaka's work on tenor and bass clarinet really gives the record an earthy, organic core – which seems to let the keyboards really soar off into space, often with the sort of vibe that you'd guess from the group's name and the cover image on the record – in a wide flurry of live and amplified performance elements! At some level, the trio is almost London's answer to some of the jazz-meets-studio work from Chicago's International Anthem label – and like some of the groups who record for that imprint, these guys are all strong jazz musicians at the core – but performing at a level that's very beyond the ordinary. Transversales Disques (France), Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A range of never-issued recordings by sound wizard Luc Ferrari – all pulled from his personal archive! Side one features the very extended "Photophonie" – done for a photographic exhibition, and with a sound that's in the noisier, more striking side of the electronic spectrum at the start – then moves into these moodier, more open passages that have voices that slip in and out of the mix – almost like these whispering demons in conversation. "Il Etati Une Fois" is another long piece – one that seems to take real joy in its mix of obscure electronic textures and more pointed tones – followed by the very short "Trans-Voices", which at 52 seconds is almost a compression of the ideas of "Photophonie". Last up is "Leica" – a work with this building cyclical wave of electronic sound, and a feel that's almost like a creation from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Rodney FranklinIn The Center/You'll Never Know/Rodney Franklin/Endless Flight (bonus track) ... CD
Columbia/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Four soulful fusion classics from keyboardist Rodney Franklin – all together in a single set! First up is In The Center – wonderful keyboard work from the amazing Rodney Franklin – a player who sounds equally great on acoustic and electric piano! This album does a wonderful job of mixing them both – showing Rodney's more sensitive side on a few acoustic numbers, but then really taking off in a much more groove-based mode for the electric ones – which have a soaring, spacious style that's in that best blend of fusion and soul that was going down at Columbia in the late 70s – but with some spacier Bob James touches too! Most of the cuts were arranged by Byron Olsen, who's got an equally sensitive ear as Franklin – and although there's a bit of vocals on the record, most of the focus is on instrumental grooves – especially Rodney's work on the keys. Titles include the classics "I Like The Music Make It Hot", "Spanish Flight", and "On The Path" – plus "Yours", "Life Moves On", and the extended "Spring Suite". You'll Never Know is fully-formed genius from the amazing Rodney Franklin – one of the best keyboard stars to emerge from the late 70s scene! Franklin's got a great talent for balancing influences from jazz and soul in ways that are similar to contemporaries George Duke and Bobby Lyle – and like both of those players, he still stands strong in jazz, but makes some key nods to soul music on this set – adding in a bit of vocals where needed, and moving into some R&B-drenched fusion lines that all sound pretty darn hip! As on previous records, Rodney plays both acoustic and electric keys – blending them wonderfully for a very deep sound – and the group behind him features some especially nice work on reeds, which bring sharper edges to some of the best tracks on the set. There's a wonderfully deep feel to the whole thing – way more than you'd expect for a major label release at the time – and titles include "Felix Leo", "The Watcher", "The Groove", "Journey", "You'll Never Know", "Return", and "Parkay Man". Next is the self-titled Rodney Franklin – tremendous work from Rodney Franklin – one of our favorite soulful fusion players from the end of the 70s! The album's a keyboard delight through and through – and Rodney plays both acoustic and electric piano, often on the same track – which creates this nicely expanded sound that works well with the album's tight arrangements! There's a fair bit of soul in the mix too – some rhythms that make a few numbers great groovers, courtesy of Tom Tom arrangements – and some other full moments handled by Patrick Williams. Titles include a wonderful version of "Windy City" – the cut you might know from a classic Carl Davis recording – plus "On The Path", "I Like The Music Make It Hot", "Life Moves On", "Creation", and "In The Center". Endless Flight is a brilliant mix of jazz, soul, and fusion – smoothed together nicely, but never in a way that's slick or commercial! Franklin's got a keen ear that lets him sit on both sides of the fence wonderfully – in a way that so many other players tried in later years, but never managed to do without losing their groove or selling out too much. Part of the strength of the album is the way that it mixes together acoustic and electric keys from track to track – deepening the spirit of the album through a good sense of pacing and mood, and also offsetting vocal tracks with some key instrumental numbers. Tom Washington produced and heavily helped in the arrangements – and titles include "Vibrations", "Benetta", "Cancion Para Mi Mama", "Dance Tonight", "Endless Flight", "Return To The Source", "Mensaje De Dios", and a surprisingly great funky take on "Hill Street Blues". Includes one bonus track – "The Groove (single version)". CD

Saxophonist Evan Parker has always been a wonderfully collaborative talent – fantastic on his own, but also very able to improvise at a fantastic level within any sort of group – so that he never dominates, and instead only seems to act as a force that seems to bring out the best in all around him! That's definitely the case here – in a set of improvisations recorded in London and Copenhagen, with a trio that features Jacob Anderskov on piano, Adam Pultz Melbye on bass, and Anders Vestergaard on drums – all younger musicians that, we think, are new to our ears – but who hit a level of spontaneous creation that's really wonderful alongside Parker's tenor. The set features four long tracks, two from each city. CD

The man also handles a variety of hip horns in addition to his trumpet – including a reverse flugelhorn, and another horn of his own creation – in a group that also features lots more percussion, a bit of piano, and guest vocalists who include Saul Williams, Mike Larry Draw, Chris Turner, and Devan Mayfield. The sound of the record is tough to describe in easy words – but if you loved the recent Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah, you'll find yourself maybe loving this one even more. The sounds here are a fantastic combination of larger ideas and more spontaneous creation – almost in an AACM mode, but a bit more spiritual overall – with David's bass at the helm of a group that includes David Swerdlove on alto and soprano sax, John Hagen on tenor and soprano, John Sprague on flutes, Greg Wall on baritone, and John Zieman on keyboards. Denis Wise plays all instruments on this record – everything but the kitchen sink! Oh wait – the liner notes actually indicate that he does play a kitchen sink – and a garbage disposal too – but in ways that are completely changed, as he mixes them with sounds from a variety of guitars, keyboards, percussion, and various electronic instruments – all in this wild style that's surprisingly earthy and organic! At some level, the music is more a garage version of electro-acoustic modes from the academy – but at another, it's pure unbridled creation, with a sense of sonic joy that really comes through on the best numbers. Some songs are slightly tuneful, and there's maybe a bit of offbeat abstracted vocals here and there – on tunes that include "Balfazzar", "Light As Air", "Valhalla", "Machine Time Ship", "Love In Foam & Surf", "Andro", "Celes", and "Hedonic Rapture". A completely revised look at the sounds that gave birth to the new age scene in the 80s – not the acoustic sounds of the Windham Hill generation, but the amazing array of spare, minimal, often electronic modes that were bubbling up on the European scene in the 70s! The package pulls together sounds from a disparate set of genres – bits of prog, electronic, minimalist, and other musics – often without any vocals in the mix, and usually moving in slow, spacey styles – working together here to paint a pre-new age picture that's wonderfully free of any of the cliches that later held back the music. As with some of the better jazz books of the period, Levey's story is one that deals not just with musical creation, but also ongoing employment – and some of the challenges that can face a musician with the integrity of Stan. The book also looks at his earliest years – both as a prize fighter, and a bebopper on the east coast – where Levey got his start before moving to greater fame in California. The date was recorded live at Elastic Arts in Chicago, and in some ways is a reflection of the way that space has become a hotbed for jazz creation that almost recalls the loft jazz scene of New York in the 70s – really well-matched players who are able to create in long, thoughtful progressions – often with a fair bit of force overall, given their understanding of each other's strengths from previous time together. Posi tone, 2019. Used ... Out Of Stock
An all-female jazz combo – hence the name – but one who've got a sound that's strong enough to quickly make you fit any gimmick behind their creation! The group's got a compelling blend of instrumentation – sounds that move from the depth of a baritone to the lightness of a Hammond – often given some very fresh rhythmic modes through the original compositions by the members of the combo. We've heard a few of these musicians in the past, but they sound especially great here together – in a sextet lineup that features Alexa Tarantino on alto, Jenny Hill on tenor, Lauren Sevian on baritone, Amanda Monaco on guitar, Akiko Tsuruga on organ, and Allison Miller on drums. Most tunes are relatively tight, with a strong soul jazz vibe – and titles include "Jelly", "Mad Time", "Funky Girl", "Mocha Spice", "Hurry Up & Wait", "Down For The Count", "Identiy", and nice takes on "Ida Lupino" and "Think". The last in a legendary series inspired by the inventive approach the Wu-Tang Clan brought to the world of hip hop samples – that great sense of sound that had them going for tunes that had way more to offer than just a funky drum break! Instead, these classic soul tracks are overflowing with amazing musical elements – not just the great vocals of the singers or amazing energy of the grooves – but also some instrumental and production twists that really keep things interesting – and which have always made this series a standout. Art Ensemble Of ChicagoWe Are On The Edge – 50th Anniversary Celebration ... CD
PI Recordings, 2019. New Copy 2 CDs ... $20.99 22.98
A tremendous tribute to the legendary Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a group who work here with only two of their surviving members, but with help from a constellation of jazz musicians inspired by their music! The group here is large, and includes AACM members and other younger talents – a fantastic lineup that mixes the core work of Famadou Don Moye on drums and percussion, and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds with work from Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Hugh Ragin and Fred Berry on trumpets, Tomeka Reid on cello, Jaribu Shahid and Junius Paul on basses, Enoch Williams and Titos Sompa on percussion, and Christina Wheeler on voice and a range of unusual electronic instruments! There's a very ambitious feel to the music – like some of Roscoe Mitchell's larger form creations, but with more of a spiritual jazz current that comes from the whole ensemble – and from vocal contributions from Moore Mother and Rodolfo Cordova Lebron. The double-length set features a studio album and a live album by the expanded group – and titles include "Bell Song", "We Are On The Edge", "Chi Congo 50", "Fanfare & Bell", "Odwalla/The Theme", "Tutankhamun", "Mama Koko", "Saturday Morning", and "Villa Tiamo". Far Out (Brazil), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $13.99
A record with an unusual source, but a sound that puts it right up there with some of the most heavenly rare Brazilian albums of the 70s – served up here in a folksy, jazzy mix of acoustic and electric elements – all with help from heavyweights who include Victor Assis Brasil, Mauricio Einhorn, Durval Ferreira, and the Azymuth trio! The songs are based around creations by a Brazilian comedy duo, but they hardly sound anything like that at all – as they're easy-going, mellow-grooving, and have these vocals that flow beautifully amidst percussion, guitar, and keyboards! There are two monologue tracks in Portuguese – both with audience laughter – but all other tracks are sung, and delivered with some wonderful arrangements by Jose Roberto Bertrami and Jose Menezes. Titles include "Negra Brecho", "Ao Billilico", "Tema Do Azambuja", "A Turma", "Verde", "Maristela", and "O Poste Da Rua Jorge De Lima". LP, Vinyl record album

A beautiful book of graphic imagination – a book that features 60s-styled ads for toys that never existed – but which take us back to the glory days of Matchbox, Big Daddy Roth, and Aurora Monster Models! Each fake toy gets a full color page – like an ad from the back cover of a vintage comic or kids magazine – and the creations are so cool, we really have trouble believing they never really existed! Sunnyside, 2019. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
This isn't the first time that vibist Erik Charlston has paid tribute to the music of Hermeto Pascoal – but the set's definitely a cooker that lives up to the strong legacy of Brazilian music and jazz that we've always loved in Hermeto's creations! Songs are mostly by Pascoal, but the set also includes tunes by Egberto Gismonti and Lenine too – all transformed in the fresh, original arrangements by Erik – who plays vibes and marimba, and even sings a bit on one track – in a group that includes Ted Nash on saxes and flute, Mark Soskin on piano, Jay Anderson on bass, and Rogerio Boccato on drums and percussion. Titles include "Voz E Vento", "Loro", "Nem Um Talvez", "Alegria Do Vaquerio", "A Gandaia Das Ondas/Pedra E Areia", "Aquela Coisa", and "A Fala Da Paixao". CD

Mike CooperOh Really/Do I Know You/Trout Steel/Places I Know/Machine Gun Co (plus bonus tracks) (3CD set) ... CD
Dawn/BGO (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $16.99
An amazing legacy in music from Mike Cooper – a British musician who started out in the world of folk blues, but never ended up moving towards some of the rockish modes of his contemporaries – instead finding his very own sort of special space in the freedom allowed by the Dawn Records label! The set begins with the very spare Oh Really – a set that has Mike Cooper mostly on guitar and vocals, in a style that's part Piedmont, part Delta blues – but also given a more folksy spin, and graced with Cooper's unusual vocals – almost making the whole thing feel like a spare acoustic version of Canned Heat territory – with titles that include "Maggie Campbell", "Saturday Blues", "Electric Chair", "Crow Jane", and "You're Gonna Be Sorry". Do I Know you is a record that follows up with a sound that's maybe a bit fuller than Mike Cooper's debut, but still relatively spare – with Mike on acoustic guitar and slide guitar, Harry Miller on bass (really great bass, by the way!), and Poor Little Anne on a bit of vocals. Miller brings these deep tones to the record that really transform things – and titles include "Do I Know You", "Start Of A Journey", "First Song", "Theme In C", and "The Link". Trout Steel is a beautiful set from the British scene at the start of the 70s – a record that's got a fairly folksy tone, but lots of jazzy currents as well! The set was issued on the seminal Dawn Records label – and really shows that imprint's commitment to the left side of the spectrum – as Mike Cooper's vocals and acoustic guitar come into play with more guitar from Stefan Grossman – plus alto sax from Mike Osborne, tenor and soprano from Alan Skidmore, piano from John Taylor, and bass from the late Harry Miller – all key players on the UK avant jazz scene of the time! The mix of these players with Cooper's core inspiration is not unlike some of the most progressive material coming from Island Records – or, even better, the special jazzy moments on records by Tim Buckley or Tim Hardin – company that Cooper could very easily keep, given the strength of his songwriting. Titles include "Don't Talk Too Fast", "On My Way", "Hope You See", "Weeping Rose", "Trout Steel", "I've Got Mine", "That's How", and "Pharoah's March". Places I Know blends Cooper's acoustic guitar and rootsy vocals with some very compelling arrangements from Mike Gibbs – the British jazz talent who was already known for his larger ensemble creations at the time, but who works here in these really subtle ways – to inflect Cooper's core inspirations with just some slight instrumental colors, tones, and phrases on most numbers – while Cooper brings in the core Machine Gun Co group on a few more. The result is a record that's way more than familiar folk – and arguably a lot hipper than most of the British acid folk of the time, too – on titles that include "Night Journey", "Paper & Smoke", "Country Water", "Time To Time", "Goodbye Blues Goodbye", and "Places I Know". The Machine Gun Co album is a partner record to Places I Know – recorded in the same sessions, but with tracks that are longer, and even more openly expressive – all with backings from the sweet Machine Gun Co quartet, a group with some especially nice electric piano from Alan Cook! Heavy use of that instrument really works against some of the folksier elements in Cooper's music – with these blocks of warm sound and color that really illuminate the tunes, and almost unlock a new level in the vocals. Cooper plays a bit of electric guitar at times – and titles include "So Glad That I Found You", "Lady Anne", "Midnight Words", and "Song For Abigail". CD also features songs from singles – "Your Lovely Ways (parts 1 & 2)", "Time In Hand", and "Schaabisch Hall". CD

Duck Down, 2012. Used ... $9.99
A surprisingly nice concept album from Posdnous and Dave of De La Soul – a tight batch of tracks that takes us back to the Long Island Scene of the mid 90s, with beats and rhymes to match! Production is by the French duo Chokolate and Khalid – who have a great ear for the way tunes of this vintage would have been put together – yet they also manage to mix the record with a vibe that's way more than just retro-recreation – enough references to hold things down, but plenty of freshness to match the lyrics too. Titles include "We Made It", "Must B The Music", "The Book Of Life", "Clash Symphony", "Move Em In Move Em Out", and "Pushin Aside Pushin Along". CD

A long-overdue recognition of the blues contributions of Willie Dixon – a set that pulls him out of the indie ghetto and pushes him firmly into the mainstream with this key release on Columbia Records! Yet despite that placement, the style is nicely down home – a strong recreation of older Chicago blues modes by producer Abner Spector – one that has Willie singing versions of his classic tunes like "Back Door Man", "The Seventh Son", "Little Red Rooster", "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man", and "The Same Thing".
