CreationAction Painting (red & black vinyl pressing) ... LP
Numero, Late 60s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99 29.98
One of the great lost groups of the UK scene of the 60s – not lost to UK audiences, or to hipsters over the generations – but still an act that never made the impact on these shores that they should! The Creation are step in step right up there with early material by The Who or Small Faces – and share a similar groundbreaking re-fusion of American roots into a new London groove – all with searing guitars, clever wordplay, and a cutting-edge spirit that may well have kept them off our charts – but which makes them so great to discover all these many years later. You might have caught a few of their songs over the years – thanks to soundtrack placement from directors like Wes Anderson, or covers by many of their bigger fans. This 2LP set features 24 tracks in all, with remastering overseen by original producer Shel Talmy – and the set includes early sides by The Mark Four, mono versions, and new stereo mixes– plus a 16 page book with scores of photos, other images, session and discographical details, and a new essay too. CreationHow Does It Feel To Feel (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Demon (UK), Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
Genius work from The Creation at their best – tunes that really get at that special sort of something that set the group apart from so many others in the late 60s scene – a kind of compression of mod, garage, and psych elements into these short little tracks that still have all of their brilliance after so many years! The intensity here is maybe right up there with the early Who at their best – and the album brings together Shel Talmy-produced tracks that were originally issued as singles on the Decca, Polydor, and Hit-ton labels. Titles include "Uncle Bert", "Midway Down", "Girls Are Naked", "Sweet Helen", "Ostrich Man", "Life Is Just Beginning", "I Am The Walker", "For All That I Am", and "How Does It Feel To Feel" in both US and UK versions! CreationPower Surge (180 gram orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
Creation/Demon (UK), 1996. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
A great late moment from The Creation – a set that was issued in the mid 90s, on the Creation Records label that took its name and inspiration from the group – and which features the original 1966 lineup of the band! The production style has maybe a bit of that later UK psych moodiness, but in a way that really helps reinvigorate the group's sound – not too commercial, but also not an easy retro rehash either – as the group sound surprisingly strong on titles that include "City Life", "Power Surge", "Someone's Gonna Bleed", "Creation", "Shock Horror", "Free Men Live Forever", "Ghost Division", and "English Language". Leon's CreationThis Is The Beginning ... LP
Studio 10/Acid Jazz (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99 27.99
A rare album of funky soul from the Bay Area scene at the start of the 70s – and a set that's every bit as righteous as you might expect from the cover! The group's the creation of singer/keyboardist/arranger Leon Pattillo – hence the name – and you might know Leon from his later famous work in the 70s – including a stint with Santana, and loads of great work with other soul artists. But here, he's a young genius working in the freest, funkiest style of the San Francisco generation – with a vibe that's maybe a more spiritual take on territory explored by Sly & The Family Stone – with an earthier, more indie vibe overall. The group has great interplay – tight instrumentation, but never slick, and with some nice long-haired currents – and vocals are by Leon and a female singer – on titles that include "Confusion", "If I Had The Power", "Sightless", "Back Roads", "This Is The Beginning", and "Mirage". 9th CreationBubble Gum ... CD
Rite Track/Past Due, 1975. New Copy ... $15.99
A classic album of jazzed-up funk – the lasting legacy by this oft-sampled group! 9th Creation originally hailed from west of the Bay Area scene of the 70s – and this album was recorded in Oakland with the same sweet jazzy finish as work by some of the other big Northern California funk acts of the time – especially Pleasure, who with their sharp sense of a groove are probably the closest comparison to the group's sound. The album is best known for the cut "Bubble Gum" – a great number with lots of jazzy changes, and a modern funky groove that still sounds pretty darn fresh – but the whole album is totally great, and filled with plenty of other songs that have the same feel as the title cut! Tracks include "Sexy Girl", "Quit It", "Falling In Love", "We Need Love", and "Rule Of Mind". CD

9th CreationReaching For The Top ... CD
Prelude/Past Due, 1977. New Copy ... $15.99
Damn funky work from 9th Creation – a group who recorded this set for the mostly-disco Prelude label, but who still serve up the same heavy sound as their earlier work! There's a tightness here that few other groups can touch – that special magic that you can hear when a larger funk ensemble somehow manages to groove with the sharpness of a quartet – but with this fuller sound that really infuses the songs with a fantastic current of soul! The set's got a few mellower moments mixed in with the groovers – the sort of balance that only Earth Wind & Fire might have gotten this right – and there's also maybe a bit more of a spiritual vibe to some of the lyrics, in a mighty nice way. Titles include "Come Back Home", "He's Coming", "A Good Time", "The Time Has Come", "Reaching For The Top", and "It Ain't Right". CD

Fantastic funk from 9th Creation – a group who really tighten up their sound for this record, but still stay as wonderful as before! There's a totally right-on-the-money vibe to the whole thing – like the best Wayne Henderson/At Home productions from the late 70s – or maybe that great Parliament moment when the group was trimming it down, but still finding a way to add in all these great elements around the edges! JD Burrise produced, and also handles the lead vocals – but the whole thing's a definite ensemble effort, and it's clear that these guys were having a hell of a time putting the record together in the studio – especially given all the sweet moments in the instrumentation – which hit some jazzy passages too. Titles include "Superheroes", "What's Shakin", "Got My Baby Back", "Shucks You're Fine", "I'd Do It Again", "Much Too Much", and the nice mellow number "Love is a Fantasy". Sweet and jazzy – very nice! CD

21st CreationBreak Thru ... LP
Gordy, 1978. Near Mint- ... $11.99
An obscure Motown group from the end of the 70s – 21st Creation had a soaring uptempo group sound that reminds us of some of the more successful disco hits of Tavares from the same time. The arrangements are mostly club-oriented – handled by Willie Hutch, Gene Page, and Harold Johnson – and you can hear the group's style to best effect on tracks like their remake of Marvin Gaye's "After The Dance", Willie Hutch's "You Gotta Dance To My Music", or the hard grooving "Thanks For Saving Me". Not totally standout material, but with a few nice moments. Other tracks include "Funk Machine", "Tailgate", and "Baby, I'm For Real". LP, Vinyl record album

On-U Sound/Hot Milk (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 4CD ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic package of work from the legendary On-U Sound label – four of the most important early albums on the label – from a time when the imprint was completely revolutionizing the influence of Jamaican music on the British scene! All of the albums were produced by Adrian Sherwood – who'd drank heavily of the sounds of Kingston in the 70s, but also grew up at a time when the more unique electronics and production styles of the post-punk years were holding sway – modes that he brought into play with the reggae sounds on the records, for one of the most unusual blends you can imagine! While The Clash and other UK artists just took on Jamaican music directly, Sherwood attempted to re-channel and shape it – at a level that not only offered respect and new showcases to reggae performers, but also then went back to have an influence i Jamaica too. The set features four full albums, all in tiny LP-styled covers – Leaps & Bounds by Singers & Players, Threat To Creation by Creation Rebel with New Age Steppers, Lows & Highs by Creation Rebel, and the classic compilation album Wild Paarty Sounds Vol 1 – one of the earliest, and most mindblowing On-U sound albums of all time! Johnny ClarkeCreation Rebel ... LP
17 North Parade, Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99 39.98
Fantastic work from Johnny Clarke – one of the younger Jamaican vocalists to emerge in the 70s – given that he started recording at a time when the music had already crossed the Atlantic and was making some big global waves – leaving it to singers like Johnny to bring the whole sound back to the roots! Clarke's got this moody, almost mysterious way of singing – yet a vibe that's every bit as soulful as some of the more straightforward vocalists of the generation before – and that moody approach makes for a perfect blend with the gritty production work of Bunny Striker Lee, which often has the bass end of the speakers blasting out as much as the higher, warmer waves of sound from Johnny. This double-length collection might be the best we've ever seen on Clarke from the classic years – and it features great notes and detail, in the top-shelf 17 North Parade style. Titles include "Enter Into His Gates With Praise", "Age Is Growing", "Peace & Love In The Ghetto", "Fire & Brimstone A Go Burn The Wicked", "African People", "King In The Arena", "Blood Dunza", "Dread A Dread", "None Shall Escape The Judgement", "Jah Jah Bless Joshua", "Commercial Locks", "Move Out Of Babylon Rastaman", "Top Ranking", and "Roots Natty Congo". The package features every track in an complete, unedited first take, presented in the order of recording – and although the five CDs each offer up five different days of creative improvisation, there's also a striking sense of variety on the individual days, too. We've liked Futterman's work in the past, but this package offers up a deeper dig into his talents that's really left us breathless – and makes us wonder how exhausted he must have been after each recording! Arista/Muzak (Japan), 1971. Used ... $18.99
Reedman Oliver Lake at his most creative – stepping out here on a sublime set of 70s improvisations – all put together with a really spiritual feel! There's a very open, collaborative feel to the music – and the set was recorded in St Louis, at a time when Lake was a key part of that city's scene – and who here also seems able to attract some other musicians from the AACM in Chicago as well! As a result, the album's a wonderful document of the new ideas bursting forth at the start of the 70s – that richly creative moment when local scenes were coming together in various cities to find new ways of jazz beyond Coltrane and Dolphy – giving a player like Lake some of the most imaginative outlets of his career. Oliver plays alto, soprano, flute, and other small instruments – and other players include Baikida Carroll and Floyd Leflore on trumpets, Joseph Bowie on trombone, John Hicks on piano, Clovis Bordeaux on electric piano, Don Officer on bass, Charles Bobo Shaw on drums, and Don Moye on congas too. Two wonderfully long-flowing tracks from this hip British group – very spiritual and slow-building, with energy that's very much in the best Alice Coltrane mode of the Impulse Records years! That's "Danser", not "dancer" – as in John Danser, who's also best known for a groovy jazz album under his own name! This sweet little set from the early 70s may well be John's best album ever – a wonderful blend of funky grooves and these wonderful raspy vocals – completely charming, and with a quality that's hard to describe, but really really great! There's a wickedly offbeat feel to the record that keeps us coming back – at some level the funky big band grooves of the MPS 70s generation, but mixed with a more sensitive independent American vibe too – especially given that some of the lyrics remind us a bit of Matthew Larkin Cassell. Danser plays tenor, and leads the group – the vocal cuts (about half the album's tracks) feature Randy Maddison singing. Creation, 1991. Used ... Out Of Stock
Hippopotamomus is a set that Momus dedicated to one of his big musical inspirations, Serge Gainsbourg – at a time when so few of his contemporaries had yet to rediscover Serge's genius! And yet like all of Momus' best influences, the power of Gainsbourg isn't slavishly delivered here – but instead taken at a very deep level, and fused into the singer's already uncanny ability to delivery an offbeat tune. Most of the instrumentation is quite spare and electronic – which brings a bit of coldness to the record that differs from some of Momus' earlier, more acoustic albums – and lyrics are sometimes spoken as much as sung, which adds a further sinister vibe. Titles include "Marquis Of Sadness", "A Monkey For Sallie", "The Painter & His Model", "Bluestocking", "I Ate A Girl Right Up", "Michelin Man", and "Pornography". CD

Arthur Brown's Kingdom ComeEternal Messenger – An Anthology 1970 to 1973 (Galactic Zoo Dossier/Kingdom Come/Journey/Jam/BBC Sessions/bonus tracks) (5CD set) ... CD
Polydor/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 5CD ... $44.99 65.99
All the albums from this mindblowing group – plus lots of bonus material too! First up is the legendary Galactic Zoo Dossier album – the start of a fantastic chapter for the legendary Arthur Brown – the first album issued with his Kingdom Come group, a combo who were even more insane than his Crazy World project of the late 60s! Brown is the quintessential front man here – singing in this really dynamic, dramatic way that's years ahead of its time – much more upfront than so many of the singers of the psych generation, and even the new hard rock vocalists too – at a level that makes music like this a great inspiration for so man styles to come! The instrumentation is as dynamic as the vocals, too – not prog jamming, but instead this really focused, fused blend of heavy drums, searing guitar, and organ – all sending things way way over the top. Titles include "Internal Messenger", "Night Of The Pigs", "Trouble", "Sunrise", "Brains", the "Galactic Zoo/Space Plucks" medley, "Creep", and "Creation". Kingdom Come is an album that bears the title of the larger group as a whole, but it's clear that mainman Arthur Brown is still very much at the helm – propelling the fantastic energy of the group almost like some carnival ringmaster – as his lyrics burst out with a power to match all the intensity of the group's guitar, organ, heavy bass, and drum interplay! There's a few moments that are nicely more complicated than before – almost as if Brown is using the new advances of the 70s to bring even more mania to his music – but without losing the rocking power of the previous records, nor giving way to too-jamming prog modes either. Titles include "Water", "City Melody", "Traffic Light Song", "Love Is A Spirit That Will Never Die", "The Teacher", and "The Experiment". Journey is an overlooked gem from the great Arthur Brown – not a set with his late 60s Crazy World group, but instead some great material done with Kingdom Come – a group who seem to be morphing with Brown into a really great space rock sort of combo! The keyboards and electronics here are stronger than before – not Tangerine Dream spacey, but fused with more hard-rocking modes that really take off and fly to the skies – so much so that Brown's vocals are often less a part of the sound than the group's amazing instrumental interplay – which could previously be shadowed a bit by his lead! The whole thing's great – a cool, compressed take on modes that so many others were trying to handle at the time – but maybe never this well. Titles include "Superficial Roadblocks", "Time Captives", "Triangles", "Conception", "Spirit Of Joy", "Come Alive", "Lost Time", and "Corpora Supercelestia". Ashbury Stabbins Duo (Roy Ashbury/Larry Stabbins)Fire Without Bricks ... CD
Bead/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1977. New Copy ... $12.99 15.00
An overlooked gem from the British free jazz scene of the 70s – a set issued on the Bead Records label, and one that got very little circulation at the time – but which is equally as mindblowing as work from the period on labels like Ictus and Ogun! The duo here features Roy Ashbury on drums and percussion, and Larry Stabbins on soprano and tenor – working in this free, open space, but on tracks that are often shorter than album-length improvisations – which allows the players to stop a minute, take a breath, and move into these nicely varied moments of spontaneous creation! You might know Stabbins from later 80s work on more groove-oriented records – but here, he's a tremendousimproviser, with a sense for creative reedwork that might well rival his contemporary Evan Parker. Titles include "Puff", "Formants Of The Deep", "Wych Elm", "Fire Without Bricks", "Rough Cut", and "Maldoror". CD

Braufman plays alto and flute – and the whole thing has this bold, soaring sort of energy – maybe even more spiritually forceful than Alan's classic album, thanks in part to an excellent group who bristle with dynamic vibes throughout – always on the edge of going farther out, but also nicely together too. Anthony Braxton & John McDonough6 Duos (Wesleyan) 2006 ... CD
Nessa, 2010. New Copy ... $13.99 16.98
One of the more obscure Anthony Braxton albums of the first decade of the century – but also one that's completely well worth seeking out, as it's got this warm spirit of collaborative creation that takes us back to some of his best moments of the 70s and 80s! The record features duets with trumpeter John McDonough – a Braxton fanatic who's clearly a great partner for the saxophonist to spin out ideas – trumpet notes both muted and muted, mixing with Braxton's work on alto, baritone, sopranino, and soprano sax – each with a very different sense of interplay from track to track! The album features two long, very out numbers – "Improvisation" and "Composition 168 + (103)" – then moves into a sublime sonic exercise on "Massive Breath Attack", offers a surprising reading of "Hail To The Spirit Of Liberty", and also includes the tunes "Finnish Line" and "Schizoid". Comet Is ComingTrust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery ... CD
Impulse, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic blend of spiritual jazz styles and electronic elements – served up here by the trio of drummer Betamax, keyboardist Danalogue, and saxophonist King Shabaka – the last of whom you might recognize as Shabaka Hutchings from a host of other hip projects on the contemporary London scene! Shabaka's work on tenor and bass clarinet really gives the record an earthy, organic core – which seems to let the keyboards really soar off into space, often with the sort of vibe that you'd guess from the group's name and the cover image on the record – in a wide flurry of live and amplified performance elements! At some level, the trio is almost London's answer to some of the jazz-meets-studio work from Chicago's International Anthem label – and like some of the groups who record for that imprint, these guys are all strong jazz musicians at the core – but performing at a level that's very beyond the ordinary. Titles include "Birth Of Creation", "Summon The Fire", "Blood Of The Past", "Astral Flying", "Super Zodiac", "The Universe Wakes Up", and "Timewave Zero". CD

A sublime one from Jose! The real highlight of the album is an incredible reading of "Wild World" – done with a mix of fast guitar, strings, and even a bit of Brazilian-tinged scatting that breaks down in the middle and always makes us stop cold! The rest of the record's almost as good, and titles include "Daytime Dreams", "Mellow Feeling", "Come Down Jesus", "Pay Day", and "Only Once". LP, Vinyl record album

The first full album that Felt cut for Creation Records – and a tremendous selection of timeless pop tunes that shows that their move to the label was the best thing they ever did! The band's sound is tightened up considerably from their Cherry Red years – compressing organ solos, guitar passages, and Lawrence's introspective vocals into tunes that were filled with a sort of timeless sense of pop – never cloying, never witless – just magically "Felt-like", with an aura that was all its own. One of the finest rock records of the past 30 years, and a real bright spot in the 80s! The final album in the initial run of genius from Felt – a set that marks a short step from Creation Records over to El at Cherry Red – where they receive some nicely expanded handling on the production! Adrian Borland produced, and the tunefulness of the songs really comes to the forefront – all while still providing a perfect showcase for the lyrical and vocal talents of Lawrence, set up beautifully amidst the swirling Hammond lines that made their Creation material so distinct! There's definitely some new ideas bubbling up here – which Lawrence would explore more freely in later work – and titles include "I Can't Make Love to You Anymore", "Budgie Jacket", "Down An August Path", and "Get Out of My Mirror". A gem of a record from Felt – one that has them complicating the sound they first brought to the Creation Records label – stretching out some of the songs a bit, and working with art rock legend Mayo Thompson of the Red Krayola in the production booth! The use of organ continues to be wonderfully strong – really giving the group a punctuation to their songs that their earlier material never had – but there's also still that great sense of overall sound that always made them so unique, and which works perfectly for the creative songwriting talents of Lawrence. Transversales Disques (France), Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy ... $29.99 47.99
A range of never-issued recordings by sound wizard Luc Ferrari – all pulled from his personal archive! Side one features the very extended "Photophonie" – done for a photographic exhibition, and with a sound that's in the noisier, more striking side of the electronic spectrum at the start – then moves into these moodier, more open passages that have voices that slip in and out of the mix – almost like these whispering demons in conversation. "Il Etati Une Fois" is another long piece – one that seems to take real joy in its mix of obscure electronic textures and more pointed tones – followed by the very short "Trans-Voices", which at 52 seconds is almost a compression of the ideas of "Photophonie". Last up is "Leica" – a work with this building cyclical wave of electronic sound, and a feel that's almost like a creation from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop! LP, Vinyl record album

Laurent FintoniBedroom Beats & B-Sides – Instrumental Hip-Hop & Electronic Music At The Turn Of The Century ... Book
Velocity, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 19.99
Hip hop was born on the streets of the South Bronx – but as the years went on, budgets changed, equipment evolved, and the music moved into some much more private spaces of creation – a rich legacy of homegrown production that's very well-documented in this book! The shift was key – as labels weren't always willing to spend the right sort of money for studio time for groundbreaking artists – and others weren't willing to play the games of the music industry, and were much more content to create on their own – a shift that's a bit like that of the rise of the singer/songwriter in rock at the end of the 60s – but with implications here that also touched many other styles of music as well. The book is an unusual presentation of the history – which is mostly told on an artist-by-artist basis, but to show an evolution in styles and sound – brought together with over 100 interviews and deep research that takes things far from the limelight of hip hop and dance music of the 90s and 00s. Incredibly beautiful work from electronic Michel Redolfi – a set of tracks that aim to take electronic creation out of the studio, and have it interact with a more natural, organic space – in this case the Pacific Ocean, which was nearby to Redolfi's home turf in San Diego! But there's actually more water here than just the Pacific – as the set begins with a number of "music for fresh water" tunes too – electronic pieces that are maybe a bit shorter and more gentle, and which have this really hypnotic way of using certain elements almost as if they were acoustic sounds from nature, which are then mixed with more electronic bits – but always with a watery vibe that's really wonderful. Sons Of Kemet borrow a page from the AACM with the title of this excellent album – maybe no surprise, as the work of the London group is every bit as revolutionary as the experiments of the AACM back in the day! As with their previous records, the Sons are working very hard to find a new language in jazz – one that has all the intensity of the spiritual forefathers who opened the music up at the end of the 60s, but which also has different rhythmic currents, vocal refrains, and instrumental energy that marks the music as very much the group's own creation! There's often a log of pulsation at the core of the tunes – not brass or bounce, but an evolution past those influences – with saxes from Shabaka Hutchings, tuba from Theon Cross, and double drums from Tom Skinner and Eward Wakili Hick. Only just a boy, Webb displayed a sensitivity with words and ear for unusual arrangements that beat the work of so many of his older predecessors in the music business – and like Burt Bacharach or Charles Stepney, Webb helped create a sound that would go on to define a generation. Jimmy tells the tales of his early years here – leaving off right at the start of the 70s, and focusing on those amazing early moments of creation, which quickly took him up to the elite of the west coast music scene. The tone is great – often very honest and surprisingly down to earth – and the book is 346 pages, softcover, with some black and white images. Book

David Wertman Sun EnsembleEarthly Delights ... LP
Sweet Earth/BBE (UK), 1978. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
A classic of 70s avant spiritual jazz – issued on the tiny Sweet Earth label, which was also home to some very special records from Sun Ra and Marion Brown! Bassist David Wertman is a lot more obscure than those bigger names, but he was part of the New York loft jazz scene in those crucial mid 70s years – and had associations with Arthur Blythe, Billy Bang, Steve Reid, and other key members of the group – all heavyweights that Wertman can easily stand next to with the strength of the material on this set! The sounds here are a fantastic combination of larger ideas and more spontaneous creation – almost in an AACM mode, but a bit more spiritual overall – with David's bass at the helm of a group that includes David Swerdlove on alto and soprano sax, John Hagen on tenor and soprano, John Sprague on flutes, Greg Wall on baritone, and John Zieman on keyboards. Drummer Jay Conway really provides some great energy to keep things lively and moving – and titles include "Oh John Love Trane", "Clear Air Dancer", "Earthly Delights", and "Relations". Finders Keepers (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $22.99 26.99
Denis Wise plays all instruments on this record – everything but the kitchen sink! Oh wait – the liner notes actually indicate that he does play a kitchen sink – and a garbage disposal too – but in ways that are completely changed, as he mixes them with sounds from a variety of guitars, keyboards, percussion, and various electronic instruments – all in this wild style that's surprisingly earthy and organic! At some level, the music is more a garage version of electro-acoustic modes from the academy – but at another, it's pure unbridled creation, with a sense of sonic joy that really comes through on the best numbers. Some songs are slightly tuneful, and there's maybe a bit of offbeat abstracted vocals here and there – on tunes that include "Balfazzar", "Light As Air", "Valhalla", "Machine Time Ship", "Love In Foam & Surf", "Andro", "Celes", and "Hedonic Rapture". Cultures Of Soul, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A pretty fantastic selection of rare disco tracks from the American underground – all of them infused with a spiritual message, but served up with grooves that go head to head with some of the best underground club of the time! The mix of positive energy and upbeat grooves is wonderful – and if you've ever heard the Clark Sisters club classic "You Brought The Sunshine", then you'll definitely know the spirit of these tunes! If you're worried about the message being one that you're not into, don't – because there's sort of a universal spirit going on here – one that gets past conventions of the church, and which really goes for a general uplifting message that's totally great – almost a precursor to some of the positive house in more recent decades. And speaking of house, there's less of that here than you'd expect – as most of the instrumentation and production are strongly in the best New York underground modes from the disco years – with less of any 80s or electro soul elements. Titles include "I Believe" by Calvin B Rhone, "Imitations" by Johnson Family Gospel Singers, "Change" by Wisdom, "On That Other Shore" by Harrison Jones & The Voices Of Harmony, "I've Been Converted" by The Converters, "Ain't No Way To Do Wrong" by New Creation, "Take It To The Streets" by Prophecy, "Let The Lord Come In Your Life" by Wisdom, "Keep The Fire" by Paradise, and "Jesus Is On The Mainline" by Mr Jesse R McGuire. A really well-titled compilation – one that gets at the special mix of music that was happening in the London mod scene of the 60s – a blend of styles that's way different than was going on here in the US at the time! There's certainly some bigger names on the collection – but the real appeal is the way those artists mix with others that never crossed the Atlantic back in the day – jazz singers, blues artists, ska/rocksteady singers, and even some UK soul artists who round out the collection and really help make a bridge between different styles! Most tunes are upbeat and pretty darn groovy – supported by a big booklet of notes that offers details on every one of the 87 artists within – a large lineup that includes Duffy Power, Richard Kent Style, Ronnie Jones, Zoot Money, Trendbender Band, Barry St John, The Chantelles, Bo Street Runners, Mark Wirtz, Rainbow Ffolly, Katch 22, Heinz, The In Crowd, Belfast Gypsies, Kevin King Lear, Artwoods, Pretty Things, Creation, David Bowie, Barney J Barnes, Rupert & The Red Devils, Andy Ellison, Plastic Penny, Australian Playboys, The Shame, Truly Smith, The Alan Bown, and many others. Motown (Japan), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $29.99
A fantastic look at the funkier side of Motown in the 70s – and a collection that's not just straight disco, thanks to the mighty selection talents of DJ Muro and T-Groove! Muro handles all of CD1 – and mixes in some excellent soundtrack numbers with more familiar soul tracks – and also presents a few classic cuts in remixed versions too! T-Groove is on CD2 – which has cuts that are maybe a bit more iconic in the Motown club sound of the 70s, but still pretty darn great when heard together in this set. Neither CD appears to be mixed – tracks all appear discrete and standalone – and the package features 37 titles that include "You Made Your Bed" by Reuben Howell, "Books & Basketball" by David Shire & James Di Pasquale, "T Plays It Cool (unedited version)" by Marvin Gaye, "Erucu" by Jermaine Jackson, "Mirrors Of My Mind" by Jackson 5, "Date With The Rain (DJ Spinna refreak)" by Eddie Kendricks, "Ego" by Ozone, "Big Time (M+M big time 2016 mix)" by Rick James, "Treat Her Like A Lady" by The Temptations, "Brothers Gonna Work It Out (Joey Negro return of the mac mix)" by Willie Hutch, "He's A Friend" by Eddie Kendricks, "Down To Love Town" by The Originals, "Go For It" by Billy Preston & Syreeta, "Full Speed Ahead" by Tata Vega, "Let's Be Young Tonight" by Jermaine Jackson, "Heaven Must Have Sent You" by Bonnie Pointer, "Shoulda Gone Dancin" by High Energy, "Saturday Night Sunday Morning" by Thelma Houston, "Star Love" by Three Ounces Of Love, "Tailgate" by 21st Creation, "Scratchin" by Magic Disco Machine, "Standing On The Verge" by Platinum Hook, and "I Need Your Lovin (M+M lovin all night long mix)" by Teena Marie. Cherry Red (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 5 CDs ... $44.99 65.99
Psychedelia meets British pop – in a really special musical moment that's forever come to be known as shoegaze! The work here comes from a time when the UK scene was really moving past punk rock, and starting to let its guitarists open up in the kind of longer, fuzzy solos that were big in the late 60s – along with all the sort of heady production modes that made such music sound even better, but always with the kind of leaner, more focused lessons learned from the post-punk years! The result is a special sort of sound that can trip out as needed, but never get too overindulgent to lose the tune – the balance that first came to play on the early singles of Creation or 4AD, then found flower in so many other UK groups as the years went on. These glorious years are presented here in a big 5CD set – one that comes in a book-styled package with loads of notes on the music – alongside 87 tracks by artists who include Blow Up, The Honey Buzzards, Submarine, Bailter Space, The Curtain Society, Mercury Rev, An April March, Spacemen 3, The Hinnies, Spiritualized, Moose, Spitfire, Moonshake, Bark Psychosis, AR Kane, Jesus & Mary Chain, Lush, Ride, The Darkside, Velocity Girl, Bleach, Catehrine Wheel, See See Rider, Cranes, Chapterhouse, Telescopes, Sun Dial, Medicine, Sweet Jesus, Luna, Astrobrite, and many more! A record that forever changed the role of the DJ and turntable when it was dropped on the world – certainly not the first record to feature an artist building sound out of a mixture of old records and his own creation, but definitely one of the most hyped and most exposed over the years! For some reason, Shadow was able to find a way to take all the skills that hip hop DJs had been developing for 20 years, mixing them with some of the darkness of the European production scene – and then getting a wider audience to really appreciate both his own talents, and all the other inspirations that drove him – something that still seems to resonate all these many years later, as Shadow opened the door for many others to appreciate all the sounds that we'd been loving in the underground! And despite all his later work, this classic full length set might still be his best – a well-deserved classic, with titles that include "Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt", "The Number Song", "Changeling", "What Does Your Soul Look Like (pts 1 & 4)", "Mutual Slump", "Organ Donor", and "Midnight In A Perfect World". This reverent release features a great second disc of additional Shadow grooves from the era – including alternate versions, remixes, previously unreleased tunes, demo beats and a 12 1/2 minute live mix! Tracks include "Best Foot Forward" (alternate version), "Building Steam WIth A Grain Of Salt" (alternate take w/out overdubs), "Number Song" (Cut Chemist party mix), "Napalm Brain" (original demo beat), and "DJ Shadow Live In Oxford, England, Oct 30 1997". The real highlight of the album is an incredible reading of "Wild World" – done with a mix of fast guitar, strings, and even a bit of Brazilian-tinged scatting that breaks down in the middle and always makes us stop cold! Rare music from this legendary Dutch free jazz collective – all pulled from the earliest years of the project, when the ICP group were every bit as important to improvised music as combos in the German and French scenes! The core players here are Misha Mengelberg on piano, Han Bennink on drums, and Willem Breuker on reeds – but with all ICP recordings, the "pool" is the most important part – as the lineup shifts fantastically, always in pursuit of new improvising possibilities – spontaneous creation amidst musicians who also include Manfred Schoof on cornet and flugelhorn, Theo Loevendie on soprano sax, Piet Noordijk on alto, Frederic Rzewski on electronics, and Willem Van Manen on trombone. Some moments have even more unusual instrumentation – steel drums, electrified viola, accordion, toy instruments, and amplified recorder – and throughout it all, the sense of unified group action and individual improvisation is tremendous. Most of the work on the CD has been unissued before – save for one track from the 53CD box ICP, and three more from a rare Dutch Jazz Scene LP box set from Radio Netherlands. 2CD set features 17 tracks in all – and titles include "Piano Distance", "Adebar Der Geheimnisvolle", "Jump Italiano", "Viet Cong", "Session No 1", "New Alto", "ICP 4 14 Write Your Own Part", "Stch Shuffle", "Siep", "Angels", and "Trammermusik". Wonderful work from Horace Silver – part of a great run of late 70s sides for Blue Note that unlock a whole new side of his soulful talents! The vibe here is different than the previous United States trilogy – still very righteous, with an overt message too – but served up in these wonderfully warm tones – with loads of great woodwind passages over these wickedly angular rhythms – grooves that are somewhat like those Silver first started forging on his 27th Man album! The arrangements are sublime – and on some cuts handled by Silver, but orchestrated by Wade Marcus – with players who include Tom Harrell on trumpet, Bob Berg on tenor, Buddy Collette and Fred Jackson on flutes, and Jerome Richardson on soprano sax. The rhythm section is key, too – and features Ron Carter on bass and Al Foster on drums! Really great work from The Times – a group who maybe sprung up during the mod revival in the UK during the early 80s, but who also have their own very special version of wit and wisdom in their music! The short-lived group was formed by Edward Ball after time in the Television Personalities – and they've got a 60s-styled sound that mixes some of the growing Creation Records style with some of the humor of Ball's earlier group – all served up in a focus on short, tuneful songs that have the guitars in the lead in a post-Jam fashion, but which keep things nicely simple throughout! The lyrics are great – simple, but playful – often stating some of the themes of the titles, which include references to 60s mod greats, pop art, and even classic Brit TV – as heard in the group's best-known cut, "I Helped Patrick McGoohan Escape"! There's a wealth of work here that we'd never heard before – as the massive set features the full albums Go With The Times, Pop Goes Art, This Is London, Hello Europe, Enjoy, and the Up Against It soundtrack – plus 63 bonus tracks from singles, compilations, and other unusual sources. Beautiful sounds from Gary Burton – a seminal 60s session that really has the vibist coming into his own, and finding that new path towards musical expression that would flower even more strongly in the 70s! The album has Burton really strengthening up his sense of chrome – matching the boldness of other important 60s vibes players on the rise – like Karel Velebny or Bobby Hutcherson – but also working this really special magic in the way he lets each note resonate in the air – often with a much longer decay on the sound than the actual moment of its creation! Burton also plays a bit of piano on the record, overdubbed with his vibes – but in a way that's quite different than the vibes/piano combo of earlier acts – like the MJQ, or George Shearing Quintet – thanks to work from Steve Swallow on bass and Larry Bunker on percussion. A real standout from the 70s spiritual jazz scene – and that's saying a lot, given how many outstanding records that scene gave us over the years! The group's got a very interesting approach – a trio lineup, with fantastic work on bass from Glenn Howell – who you might know from later guitar work – mixed with clarinet and other reeds from Roland Young, and these amazing vocals from Aisha Kahlil – a singer with a very freewheeling approach! Kahlil's like nobody we can really think of – almost more instrumental in approach than vocal, which mixes wonderfully with the clarinets, alto, and soprano saxes used by Young. That hardly seemed to matter to Tapscott, though – as his legacy is tremendous, finally given full exposure by this autobiography, which then paved the way for new presentations of his music in years to come – a surprisingly large legacy of reissues that we wish Horace could have seen in his too-short life! Yet despite that, it's clear that the man himself took a lot of price in his music – as you'll read in this live story, which documents Tapscott's move to LA as a young child, his creation of the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, and all his many other projects – which were often tied to cultural and political developments in south LA. The book is 272 pages, softcover, and as beautifully written as Tapscott's music! Book

✨✧ Denis WiseWize Music ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Shundana YusafBroadcasting Buildings – Architecture On The Wireless 1927 to 1945 (hardcover) ... Book
MIT Press, 2014. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
That's a pretty crazy image on the cover, and there's some pretty crazy images within – as this well-done book looks at the way the BBC conceived of presenting a public, permanent face to its ephmeral broadcast identity in the early 20th century – through the creation of the modernist masterpiece Broadcast House in London! The book begins with the construction of that landmark building, then moves on to other topics that deal with the interplay between the new ideas on radio and the shifting setting of London in the years before and through WWII – served up here with black and white images alongside some very well-penned critical text by the author. 331 pages, hardcover, with black and white images. ✨✧ Stanley Cowell & Dave BurrellQuestions/Answers ... CD
Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Amazing duo improvisations from two of the hippest pianists of the early 70s – Stanley Cowell and Dave Burrell, coming together here on a rare Japanese-only album – one that features two long tracks that each take up a side of the disc! The vibe is maybe a bit more avant at times than some of Stanley's work on Strata East, but there's also a great balance between the voices of the two players too – and the sense of spontaneous creation is wonderful throughout, and always balances individual expressions with deeper ideas – ringing out in the loud, lively space of Ino Hall in Tokyo. The record contains two long tracks – "Questions" and "Answers" – both long improvisations by the pair. CD

✨✧ Tobias DeliusPelikanismus ... CD
ICP (Netherlands), 2001. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A quartet of musicians with a wonderfully deft feel – a group led by saxophonist Tobias Delius, but very much an equal balance between the drums of Han Bennink, cello of Tristan Honsinger, and bass of Joe Williams! There's a spirit here that takes us back to Bennink's first explosion of creativity on the Dutch scene at the end of the 60s – and after all these many years, the drummer is still breathtaking on the kit – and clearly inspirational for all three other players – although again, nobod really seems to be the "boss" in the lineup, because the instrumental interplay is filled with all these magical moments of combination, creation, and association. Delius blows tenor and a bit of clarinet – and titles include "Die Like A Duck", "Gestreken Eend", "Belly Can", "Lene", "Ringelnatter", "Plush Fabrication", and "Reciprocal". CD

✨✧ ICP OrchestraAan & Uit ... CD
ICP (Netherlands), 2003. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The mighty Misha Mengelberg is a wonderful force in this recording by the larger ICP group – not only composing most of the original song structures, but also providing the kind of piano work that initially made the group so great – linking their more contemporary creation to an older legacy of postwar modern jazz! The record bristles with character and creative fire right from the start – with a bit of vocalization from Misha, alongside reeds from Ab Baars, Tobias Delius, and Michael Moore – plus trumpet from Thomas Heberer, trombone from Wolter Wierbos, bass from Ernst Glerum, cello from Tristan Honsinger, violin from Mary Oliver, and fantastic work on drums from Han Bennink – who's the other key musical bookend in the set. Most tracks are short, and wonderfully dynamic – and titles include "Let's Climb A Hill", "Opa", "Tuinek", "Aan & Uit", "Barbaric", and "Back To Lippiza". CD

Corbett vs. Dempsey, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
✨✧ Augustus PabloAncient Harmonies (Blowing With The Wind/Rockers Comes East/One Step Dub/Rising Sun) ... CD
Rockers/VP, Mid 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
Four 80s albums from the mighty Augustus Pablo – served up here in a special 2CD set! First up is Blowing With The Wind – seminal 80s work from Augustus Pablo – a set that's maybe got a bit more digital and electronic touches in the mix, but which still maintains that fantastic mix of dub and melodica that made the man so unique! The tunes have very righteous rhythms at the core, and a bit of keyboards mixed in with Pablo's lead – and maybe a few spacey touches around the edges that come off in a really great way! Augustus handles all the keyboards, arrangements, and production – and titles include "Twinkling Star", "Creation Blues", "Zion UFO", "Drums To The King", "First World Call", "This Song", "Twenty One Years Later", and "Ancient Harmonies". Rockers Come East is a sweet digital set from Augustus Pablo – a mid 80s set that has him mixing his melodica with other keyboard work on Casio and Yamaha – both instruments that are used with the otherworldly, snakey groove that makes Pablo so great! The rhythms are maybe slightly more 80s, too, but still very spare and stripped down – and Phillip Smart helps on the mix, while Clive Brown and Squidley provide some drumulation. Titles include "Pablo Meets P Smart In LI", "Progression Dub", "Revelino Dub", "Babylon Loosing Dub", "Sun Ray Dub", "Jah D Special", "Rockers Come East", Dubbing The Oppressors", and "Zion Seals Dub". One Step Dub is dubby genius from the great Augustus Pablo – a set that continues the spirit of his best 70s work in this mode, but with a sound that has a few slight 80s touches! The overall sound is still very nice and spare – laidback, gently tripping in the rhythm department, and with both melodica solos from Pablo – and some other keyboard work that really echoes the moody, spacey, snakey sound of his work on the blown instrument! The title names are a bit basic, but that hardly matters, given the sound of the set – and tracks include "Riot Dub", "In The Red Dub", "Hanging Dub", "Night Patrol Dub", "Rastaman Dub", "Zion Way Dub", and "Dubbing King James". Rising Sun is fantastic work from Augustus Pablo – and a great demonstration of the way that the best of the classic 70s Jamaican artists were able to shift their styles slightly during the 80s, but still come up with a sound that was every bit as great! There's more digital elements here than before – especially in the crackle of some of the rhythms – but in ways that are right around the edges, and which echo the sort of effects that might have been cooked up by tape in the studio – used here to bring a nice bite to the mix of melodica and melodica like keyboard lines from Pablo! Mixes are by Scientist – and titles include "Dub Wiser", "Rising Sun", "Fire Red", "Jah Wind", "Pipers Of Zion", and "African Frontline". CD

The fantastic debut of Queen Latifah – a record that was done way before she was a star on the screen, and a set that also set a whole new standard for the female voice in hip hop as well! As you can tell by the cover, Latifah's got a proud, righteous vibe on the set – working with the Flavor Unit, and some especially great production from Mark The 45 King – who keeps things crisp and funky while the Queen serves up some fantastic lines! Other production work is by KRS One, Louis Vega, and Prince Paul – the last of whom handles the fantastic "Mama Gave Birth To The Soul Children", which features guest work from De La Soul. Other cuts include "Princess Of The Posse", "Ladies First", "Wrath Of My Madness", "Come Into My House", "Evil That Men Do", "A King & Queen Creation", "Latifah's Law", and "Dance For Me".
