Numero, Late 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $14.99 29.98
One of the great lost groups of the UK scene of the 60s – not lost to UK audiences, or to hipsters over the generations – but still an act that never made the impact on these shores that they should! The Creation are step in step right up there with early material by The Who or Small Faces – and share a similar groundbreaking re-fusion of American roots into a new London groove – all with searing guitars, clever wordplay, and a cutting-edge spirit that may well have kept them off our charts – but which makes them so great to discover all these many years later. You might have caught a few of their songs over the years – thanks to soundtrack placement from directors like Wes Anderson, or covers by many of their bigger fans. This 2CD set features 46 tracks in all, with remastering overseen by original producer Shel Talmy – and the set includes early sides by The Mark Four, some alternate takes, and even new mixes – plus an 80 page hardcover book with scores of photos, other images, session and discographical details, and a new essay too. CreationPower Surge (180 gram orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
Creation/Demon (UK), 1996. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
A great late moment from The Creation – a set that was issued in the mid 90s, on the Creation Records label that took its name and inspiration from the group – and which features the original 1966 lineup of the band! The production style has maybe a bit of that later UK psych moodiness, but in a way that really helps reinvigorate the group's sound – not too commercial, but also not an easy retro rehash either – as the group sound surprisingly strong on titles that include "City Life", "Power Surge", "Someone's Gonna Bleed", "Creation", "Shock Horror", "Free Men Live Forever", "Ghost Division", and "English Language". Cherry Red/Demon (UK), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
A later effort from The Creation – that fantastic UK mod psych group from the 60s who never full got their due – but whose influence was felt strongly for generations to come! This late 80s set is a great example of that – as group members Eddie Phillips and Kenny Pickett work on lean songs that really recall the charms of The Creation at their best – done for a whole new generation of listeners and labels inspired by their groundbreaking 60s material, at a level that reminds us that sometimes the originators do it best! Titles include a remake of "Making Time" – plus "Lay The Ghost", "Psychedelic Rose", "United", "Radio Beautiful", "Spirit Called Love", and "White Night". LP, Vinyl record album

9th CreationBubble Gum ... LP
Rite Track/Past Due, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
A classic album of jazzed-up funk – the lasting legacy by this oft-sampled group! 9th Creation originally hailed from west of the Bay Area scene of the 70s – and this album was recorded in Oakland with the same sweet jazzy finish as work by some of the other big Northern California funk acts of the time – especially Pleasure, who with their sharp sense of a groove are probably the closest comparison to the group's sound. The album is best known for the cut "Bubble Gum" – a great number with lots of jazzy changes, and a modern funky groove that still sounds pretty darn fresh – but the whole album is totally great, and filled with plenty of other songs that have the same feel as the title cut! Tracks include "Sexy Girl", "Quit It", "Falling In Love", "We Need Love", and "Rule Of Mind". LP, Vinyl record album

9th CreationSuperheroes ... LP
Hilltak/Past Due, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $11.99
Fantastic funk from 9th Creation – a group who really tighten up their sound for this record, but still stay as wonderful as before! There's a totally right-on-the-money vibe to the whole thing – like the best Wayne Henderson/At Home productions from the late 70s – or maybe that great Parliament moment when the group was trimming it down, but still finding a way to add in all these great elements around the edges! JD Burrise produced, and also handles the lead vocals – but the whole thing's a definite ensemble effort, and it's clear that these guys were having a hell of a time putting the record together in the studio – especially given all the sweet moments in the instrumentation – which hit some jazzy passages too. Titles include "Superheroes", "What's Shakin", "Got My Baby Back", "Shucks You're Fine", "I'd Do It Again", "Much Too Much", and the nice mellow number "Love is a Fantasy". Sweet and jazzy – very nice! LP, Vinyl record album

A gem of a record from one of the coolest UK groups of the 60s – served up here in a German release that maybe gives The Creation one of their most vibrant covers ever! Despite the European issue of the material, the tracks here are all Brit brilliance from the group and producer Shel Talmy – served up in their incredible blend of mod grooves, garagey rawness, and early psych production – sharp and tight at the same time, and years ahead of its time! Titles include "Can I Join Your Band", "Making Time", "Tom Tom", "Biff Bang Pow", "Painterman", and "Nightmares" – plus covers of "Cool Jerk", "Hey Joe", and "Like A Rolling Stone". Reedman Oliver Lake at his most creative – stepping out here on a sublime set of 70s improvisations – all put together with a really spiritual feel! There's a very open, collaborative feel to the music – and the set was recorded in St Louis, at a time when Lake was a key part of that city's scene – and who here also seems able to attract some other musicians from the AACM in Chicago as well! As a result, the album's a wonderful document of the new ideas bursting forth at the start of the 70s – that richly creative moment when local scenes were coming together in various cities to find new ways of jazz beyond Coltrane and Dolphy – giving a player like Lake some of the most imaginative outlets of his career. Oliver plays alto, soprano, flute, and other small instruments – and other players include Baikida Carroll and Floyd Leflore on trumpets, Joseph Bowie on trombone, John Hicks on piano, Clovis Bordeaux on electric piano, Don Officer on bass, Charles Bobo Shaw on drums, and Don Moye on congas too. ✨✧ Rufus HarleyRe-Creation Of The Gods ... CD
Ankh/Transparency, 1972. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most legendary albums of jazz funk ever recorded! Rufus Harley was a saxophone player who also picked up the bagpipes for a few excellent 60s albums for Atlantic Records – and although those records are great, this 1972 independent album is a real mind blower! By the time of this set, Rufus had really stretched out – both creatively and spiritually – working his standard bagpipe jazz groove into a much trippier sound, one that explored the tonal and modal properties of the instrument. Not only that, Rufus got a lot funkier than ever before – working here with organist Bill Mason, a sonic contemporary of Leon Spencer and Charles Earland – and the resultant mix of organ and bagpipes creates a monstrous sound that's unlike anything we can describe! The album's a mixture of Sufi and Biblical statements – fused into long funky jazz tracks, stretching out into some incredible grooves. Includes the classic "Malika", plus the cuts "Etymology", "Hypothesis", and "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen", done in a great heavy version! CD also features a bonus 10 minute jam not on the original album! CD

Groundbreaking improvisations from the duo of Paul and Limpe Fuchs – working here at the Days Of Free Music Festival in 1977, on a host of unusual instruments of their own creation! About the only thing familiar here is the set of drums played at times by Limpe – alongside all sorts of other incredible things created by the pair – including a bowed stringed instrument, a large horn of copper, strange combinations of exotic wind instruments and mouthpieces, a foot zither, and other unusual percussion instruments – all used in ways that are very open and improvised – almost as if you had a troupe of Harry Partch musicians creating their own music after hours. Limpe and Paul also each get a solo track – but most of the set is duo improvisations! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ AppleApple A Day (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Page One/Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $12.99
There's an apple on the cover, and an apple in the name – and this British group Apple maybe owes a bit to late 60s Beatles material on Apple Records – but only in the way that they both had greatness recorded during the same time period! Apple are maybe a bit more lean, with some of the mix of psych and beat group elements that we love in The Creation – tunes that are short, focused, and catchy – but which also pack plenty into a small space too – maybe also like the energy of The Move at their start! The production is great – lots of nice stuff happening around the edges, which sounds especially great on the strong piano lines that dominate many tunes – really making the group sound a bit different than other groups that lead with the guitar – although Apple has plenty of greatness in that aspect too! Titles include "Let's Take A Trip Down The Rhine", "Doctor Rock", "The Otherside", "Mr. Jones", "Queen Of Hearts Blues", "Rock Me Baby", "Buffalo Billycan", "Psycho Daisies", and "Pretty Girl I Love You". CD features bonus tracks – mono single versions of "Buffalo Billycan", "The Otherside", "Doctor Rock", and "Let's Take A Trip Down The Rhine". CD

Warren Baker with Paul Tanner & Andre MonteroMusic For Heavenly Bodies ... LP
Omega/Modern Harmonic, 1958. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $23.99 24.99
There's two sorts of heavenly bodies on the cover – but the real charms of the record lie inside, as the set's overflowing with incredible early theremin recordings! The album features spacey orchestral settings arranged by Warren Baker, and conducted by Andre Montero – plus fantastic work on the "electro theremin" by Paul Tanner – a different variation on the incredible post-war electronic instrument! The "electro theremin" was Tanner's own creation, and it works on a cool sliding principle that creates a lot of weird spacey dipping, turning, and soaring effects. The album's packaged in a lovingly heavy cover, with a nude "heavenly body" floating in space amidst a sea of bright colors! Titles include "Misty Moon Blues", "Out Of This World", "Holiday On Saturn", "20th Century Venus", and "Up To Jupiter". LP, Vinyl record album

A long-overdue second album from Alan Braufman – maybe not the most familiar name in jazz, but a reed player who gave the world one fantastic album on India Navigation back in the 70s – and who now finally returns as a leader for this equally great second set! Braufman plays alto and flute – and the whole thing has this bold, soaring sort of energy – maybe even more spiritually forceful than Alan's classic album, thanks in part to an excellent group who bristle with dynamic vibes throughout – always on the edge of going farther out, but also nicely together too. Other players include Cooper Moore on piano, James Brandon Lewis on tenor, Ken Filiano on bass, and Andrew Drury on drums – with a bit of percussion at times from Michael Wimberly. Titles include "Creation", "Alone Again", "The Fire Still Burns", "Home", and "No Floor No Ceiling". CD

Gary BurtonTime Machine ... LP
RCA, 1966. Near Mint- ... $24.99
Beautiful sounds from Gary Burton – a seminal 60s session that really has the vibist coming into his own, and finding that new path towards musical expression that would flower even more strongly in the 70s! The album has Burton really strengthening up his sense of chrome – matching the boldness of other important 60s vibes players on the rise – like Karel Velebny or Bobby Hutcherson – but also working this really special magic in the way he lets each note resonate in the air – often with a much longer decay on the sound than the actual moment of its creation! Burton also plays a bit of piano on the record, overdubbed with his vibes – but in a way that's quite different than the vibes/piano combo of earlier acts – like the MJQ, or George Shearing Quintet – thanks to work from Steve Swallow on bass and Larry Bunker on percussion. Tracks include "Six Nix Quix Flix", "The Sunset Bell", "Deluge", "Chega De Saudade", and "Falling Grace". LP, Vinyl record album

Comet Is ComingTrust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery ... LP
Impulse, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic blend of spiritual jazz styles and electronic elements – served up here by the trio of drummer Betamax, keyboardist Danalogue, and saxophonist King Shabaka – the last of whom you might recognize as Shabaka Hutchings from a host of other hip projects on the contemporary London scene! Shabaka's work on tenor and bass clarinet really gives the record an earthy, organic core – which seems to let the keyboards really soar off into space, often with the sort of vibe that you'd guess from the group's name and the cover image on the record – in a wide flurry of live and amplified performance elements! At some level, the trio is almost London's answer to some of the jazz-meets-studio work from Chicago's International Anthem label – and like some of the groups who record for that imprint, these guys are all strong jazz musicians at the core – but performing at a level that's very beyond the ordinary. Titles include "Birth Of Creation", "Summon The Fire", "Blood Of The Past", "Astral Flying", "Super Zodiac", "The Universe Wakes Up", and "Timewave Zero". LP, Vinyl record album

Polskie Nagrania/GAD (Poland), 1968. New Copy ... $9.99
A totally groovy little group from late 60s Poland – one who work here in a "beat mass" of their own creation – a totally rocking album that seeks to remake the Catholic mass in a flurry of fast drums, riffing guitars, and mod keyboards! The territory is nothing new – the Electric Prunes, David Axelrod, Mind Garage, and other acts tried the same thing over in the US – but this one's maybe a bit different, as it's coming more from a beat group sound – so has less of the too-heady energy of some of the rest, and instead explodes with a vibe that's more mod 60s London than you might be expecting! The organ gets in plenty of great moments, and the drums keep things moving strongly – on titles that include "Kyrie", "Gloria", "Graduale", "Credo", "Agnus Dei", "Sanctus", "Communio", and "Introitus" – plus Pastoralki selections "Historia O Boznymn Narodzeniu", "Przjaciele Moi", and "Chwalcie Imie Pana". Decca (UK), 1969. Used ... $9.99
A nice batch of late 60s psychedelic from The End – a record with that mixes the catchy idiosyncrasies of post-Sgt. Pepper Lennon/McCartney with the headier elements of groups like The Creation and Barrett-era Pink Floyd! The album was championed and produced by the Stones' Bill Wyman and engineered by rock heavyweight Glyn Johns – but this very deserving record didn't get its due at the time – perhaps because Decca didn't quite know how to sell such a record. Columbia/Superbird (UK), 1980. Used ... $8.99
Tremendous work from Rodney Franklin – one of our favorite soulful fusion players of the era – and 2 albums back-to-back! The Rodney Franklin album is a keyboard delight through and through – and Rodney plays both acoustic and electric piano, often on the same track – which creates this nicely expanded sound that works well with the album's tight arrangements! There's a fair bit of soul in the mix too – some rhythms that make a few numbers great groovers, courtesy of Tom Tom arrangements – and some other full moments handled by Patrick Williams. Titles include a wonderful version of "Windy City" – the cut you might know from a classic Carl Davis recording – plus "On The Path", "I Like The Music Make It Hot", "Life Moves On", "Creation", and "In The Center". You'll Never Know is more fully-formed genius from Franklin – one of the best keyboard stars to emerge from the late 70s scene! Rodney again plays both acoustic and electric keys – blending them wonderfully for a very deep sound – and the group behind him features some especially nice work on reeds, which bring sharper edges to some of the best tracks on the set. There's a wonderfully deep feel to the whole thing – way more than you'd expect for a major label release at the time – and titles include "Felix Leo", "The Watcher", "The Groove", "Journey", "You'll Never Know", "Return", and "Parkay Man". The tracks her vary in length, but work together to paint a lovely little picture in sound – that early pre-new age underground mode that Iasos and a few other American artists were helping forge – on titles that include "The Diamond Heart Center Of Creation", "Waltz Of The Swaying Hearts", "The Fountain Of Creation", "The Gates Of Opal", and "The Temples Of Olympus At Dawn". ICP TentetICP Tentet In Berlin ... LP
FMP/Be! (Germany), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A late 70s session on FMP, but one that really shows the dynamic, boundless sense of imagination that we love from the ICP organization – led here by madman Misha Mengelberg on piano and at the helm of the operation! The sounds are free, but with a different quality than some of the more familiar FMP modes – even though the lineup here features some of that label's artists – in a lineup that also includes Tristan Honsinger on cello, Han Bennink on drums, Maarten Altena on bass, Peter Brotzmann on reeds, and John Tchicai on alto sax! The tunes are shortish, and almost feel like they have a sense of structure at times – even though the players go pretty far out at others – a great tension between composition and spontaneous creation, held together beautifully under the leadership of Mengelberg. Titles include "Polizei", "Ansange", "In Memoriam J Hodges", "La Madelon", "Rumbone", "Kiwk Kwek Kwak", and "Ludwig's Blue Note". LP, Vinyl record album

Grunt/Esoteric (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of late albums from Jefferson Airplane – issued here in a single set, with new remastering too! First up is Long John Silver – a really fantastic final studio album from Jefferson Airplane – a set that's definitely different than their early work, and which shows the new directions that members would soon take on their own – but done with a vibe that's also a fantastic evolution of the core group's famous sound! The guitar work is even more complex than before – Jorma Kaukonen really blowing us away with his skills, but never in a show-offy way, as the whole thing is wrapped around these honest core rhythms that are almost a rootsier take on psyche elements – with Grace Slick's lead vocals almost coming off with a Sandy Denny quality at times. Titles include "Long John Silver", "Aerie (Gang Of Eagles)", "Twilight Double Leader", "Milk Train", "The Son Of Jesus", "Easter", "Trial By Fire", and "East Starch Mom". Thirty Seconds Over Winterland is a late live album from Jefferson Airplane – who were at the end of their journey, but whatever their personal differences may have been at the time, they still put on a helluva great rock and roll show! Thirty Seconds Over Winterland was recorded at that legendary San Francisco venue, and at Chicago's Auditorium Theatre, with the post-Marty Balin line-up of Grace Slick, Paul Kanter, Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukomen – plus violinist Papa John Creach, drummer John Barbata and vocalist David Freiberg from Quicksilver Messenger Service. Titles include "Have You Seen The Saucers", "Feel So Good", "Crown Of Creation", "When The Earth Moves Again", "Milk Train", "Trial By Fire" and "Twilight Double Leader". CD

Bassist Joelle Leandre always seems to bring out something special in a session – and that's definitely the case here, as her warm spirit of creative creation seems to really shape the contributions of Agusti Fernandez on piano and Evan Parker on tenor sax! Make no mistake, Parker also brings out a lot in players too – and his ability to adapt, especially in mature years, continues to blow us away – especially on a record like this, as his tenor wraps around the bass in all sorts of wonderful ways, sprinkled with notes from Fernandez, and dotted by the drums and objects used by Zlatko Kaucic – who we may be hearing here for the first time. The set features one long performance – recorded at the Cerkno festival in 2018, dedicated to Kaucic's 40 years as a musician! CD

Great early work from Lake – playing here in a number of different settings, but always with well-matched collaborators! 3 tracks on the set – "Owshet", "Heavy Spirits", and "While Pushing Down Turn" – featuring Lake with Olu Dara on trumpet, Donald Smith on piano, Victor Lewis on drums, and Stafford James on bass, playing in sort of a freebop mode. Three more tracks – "Movement Equals Creation", "Intensity", and "Altoviolin" – feature Lake on alto, playing with a violin trio that sounds very dark and moody. A beautiful duo, improvising freely – the piano of Kris Davis and very vivid tenor and soprano sax of Ingrid Laubrock – both interwoven in these incredible ways that make the whole thing seem like an effortless act of spontaneous creation – nothing forced, nothing overdone, just two well-matched minds spinning out an amazing array of notes and tones together! Laubrock's soprano is especially nice – often used spatially, in ways that are not unlike some of the more modern moments we've heard from Jimmy Giuffre – and Davis can hold back one minute, attack the next – always with a strong degree of sensitivity to the reeds. A rare bit of Canadian psych from the start of the 70s – served up by a group with a sound that's all their own! Some numbers here are straightforward hard rockers, but others have a more complex approach – not proggy, almost performative – like some of the trippier French material of the period, which almost had a communal creation sort of vibe. There's plenty of searing guitars and very offbeat French lyrics – and the record's got a very nice sense of variety from tune to tune. Titles include "Quebec Nous T'Aimons", "Groovy", "Petite Fille T'Es Down", "OK L'Chien", "Charogne", "Heavy", and "Aux Petits Oiseux" – which is a very cool psychedelic raga that rounds out the record! One of the last truly brilliant albums from Momus – even if it's got a few dodgy tracks! The problem with this one is that it's a lot longer than his albums for Creation – 19 tracks in all, about 8 or 9 of which should have stayed in the ash bin. But amongst those clunkers, there's some really incredible work – perfect little tunes that have all the dark edgey quality of earlier years, with a well-composed pop sensibility that gives them more hooks than a room full of coat racks. Some of these tunes are incredible treasures, the kind we'd never want to part with. Our favorites include "Red Pyjamas", "Slide Projector Lie Detector", "I Had A Girl", "Paranoid Acoustic Seduction Machine", and "The Loneliness Of Lift Music". CD

Big Beat/Ace (UK), 1984. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
Looks like a 60s soundtrack, but the set's actually an unusual psychedelic project by The Damned – released as if the whole thing was a record designed to accompany one of those schlocky AIP exploitation films from years back – but actually better than most of those albums from a musical perspective! Given that the whole thing was recorded in 1983, it's actually surprisingly powerful stuff – and seems to preface the big wave of UK sounds from the Creation Records scene – a surprising move for The Damned, but one that comes off surprisingly well. Singer Naz Nomad is actually Dave Vanian – and tracks include covers of songs that the group loved, plus originals of their own. Most folks know Tony Oxley as an important drummer on the UK avant scene for decades – but he's also a creative musician with many talents, which includes strong work on electronics – which he uses here alongside Stefan Holker, who handles all the acoustic percussion on the record! The set has a very electro-acoustic vibe – as you might expect from the instrumentation – and feels very different than usual drum/electronics recordings, such as the work of Paul Lytton – as Oxley often has a very textural approach, but one's that mixes with tuneful moments – echoed by Holker as the duo improvise together – never in a way that's song-based, as this is clearly freely spontaneous creation – but with a very special quality that makes the record a gem! The set features six improvisations of varying lengths, recorded in Germany in 2019. CD

Rockers/VP, Mid 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 16.99
Four 80s albums from the mighty Augustus Pablo – served up here in a special 2CD set! First up is Blowing With The Wind – seminal 80s work from Augustus Pablo – a set that's maybe got a bit more digital and electronic touches in the mix, but which still maintains that fantastic mix of dub and melodica that made the man so unique! The tunes have very righteous rhythms at the core, and a bit of keyboards mixed in with Pablo's lead – and maybe a few spacey touches around the edges that come off in a really great way! Augustus handles all the keyboards, arrangements, and production – and titles include "Twinkling Star", "Creation Blues", "Zion UFO", "Drums To The King", "First World Call", "This Song", "Twenty One Years Later", and "Ancient Harmonies". Rockers Come East is a sweet digital set from Augustus Pablo – a mid 80s set that has him mixing his melodica with other keyboard work on Casio and Yamaha – both instruments that are used with the otherworldly, snakey groove that makes Pablo so great! The rhythms are maybe slightly more 80s, too, but still very spare and stripped down – and Phillip Smart helps on the mix, while Clive Brown and Squidley provide some drumulation. Titles include "Pablo Meets P Smart In LI", "Progression Dub", "Revelino Dub", "Babylon Loosing Dub", "Sun Ray Dub", "Jah D Special", "Rockers Come East", Dubbing The Oppressors", and "Zion Seals Dub". One Step Dub is dubby genius from the great Augustus Pablo – a set that continues the spirit of his best 70s work in this mode, but with a sound that has a few slight 80s touches! The overall sound is still very nice and spare – laidback, gently tripping in the rhythm department, and with both melodica solos from Pablo – and some other keyboard work that really echoes the moody, spacey, snakey sound of his work on the blown instrument! The title names are a bit basic, but that hardly matters, given the sound of the set – and tracks include "Riot Dub", "In The Red Dub", "Hanging Dub", "Night Patrol Dub", "Rastaman Dub", "Zion Way Dub", and "Dubbing King James". Rising Sun is fantastic work from Augustus Pablo – and a great demonstration of the way that the best of the classic 70s Jamaican artists were able to shift their styles slightly during the 80s, but still come up with a sound that was every bit as great! There's more digital elements here than before – especially in the crackle of some of the rhythms – but in ways that are right around the edges, and which echo the sort of effects that might have been cooked up by tape in the studio – used here to bring a nice bite to the mix of melodica and melodica like keyboard lines from Pablo! Mixes are by Scientist – and titles include "Dub Wiser", "Rising Sun", "Fire Red", "Jah Wind", "Pipers Of Zion", and "African Frontline". CD

That's definitely the case here – in a set of improvisations recorded in London and Copenhagen, with a trio that features Jacob Anderskov on piano, Adam Pultz Melbye on bass, and Anders Vestergaard on drums – all younger musicians that, we think, are new to our ears – but who hit a level of spontaneous creation that's really wonderful alongside Parker's tenor. A really amazing album from a French free jazz group who are really finding their way forward – issued in 1973, but already very different from most of the initial post-1968 recordings on the Parisian scene! The album features a concert recording, with three very long-spun tracks by the quartet – amazing improvisatory energy flowing between the bass if Didier Levallet, the drums of Jean My Truong, the electric piano and clavinet of Siegfried Kessler, and the mix of piccolo, bass clarinet, tenor, and sopranino sax of Jeff Seffer – who also blows this very cool "malabar" reed instrument of his own creation! A classic of 70s avant spiritual jazz – issued on the tiny Sweet Earth label, which was also home to some very special records from Sun Ra and Marion Brown! Bassist David Wertman is a lot more obscure than those bigger names, but he was part of the New York loft jazz scene in those crucial mid 70s years – and had associations with Arthur Blythe, Billy Bang, Steve Reid, and other key members of the group – all heavyweights that Wertman can easily stand next to with the strength of the material on this set! Soul Jazz (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. Used 2 CDs ... $11.99
A fantastic overview of sounds from the Jamaican scene in the years before rocksteady and ska really took off – most of them from the hands of groundbreaking producer Clement "Coxone" Dodd – later the driving force behind Studio One! In these early years, Dodd already had very close ties to the local scene – first as a DJ who was bringing in underground R&B sides from the US, to play on his 50s soundsystem – and also as a record store owner, with a very strong ear for new talent! Yet although Dodd's later sounds have been really well documented, these earliest recordings are perhaps even more amazing – as they showcase a really great range of styles, and present a Jamaican musical world in which the new ideas were just getting started, and taking on modes that sometimes feel very American, other times feel as if they're in a very individual space that doesn't even have any ska or blue beat touches. There's even a bit of jazz in the mix at times, which is great – and throughout the collection's 41 titles, there's an undeniable richness of Jamaican talent that would have already been huge, even if the scene didn't explode in later years. Titles include "More Proof" by Clancy Eccles, "Get Drunk" by Owen Gray, "Jerk Pork" by Roland Alphonso & His Alley Cats, "Cuban Blockade" by Don Drummond, "Little Lady" by Theophilus Beckford with Clue J & His City Slickers, "Exodus" by Jazz Jamaica, Don't Do It" by Bunny & Scully, "Six & Seven Books Of Moses" by The Maytals, "Peanut Vendor" by Tommy McCook, "Mighty Man" by Higgs & Wilson, "Creation" by Lascelles Perkins, "Mr Propman" by Jazz Jamaica From The Workshop, "Light Of My Life" by Mellow Larks, and "Grand National" by Down Beat All Stars. VariousDIY – The Rise Of The Independent Music Industry After Punk ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. Used ... $8.99
A brilliant overview of the depth and breadth of indie music in the UK during the late 70s and early 80s – most of it from labels so tiny, they make Rough Trade, Factory, and Creation look like the majors! A few of the artists here went onto become well-known, but the rest all remained quite obscure – and all of them are represented by initial singles issued on tiny imprints – most of them the kind of small-press 7" singles that were suddenly in heavy circulation in the punk and post-punk years. The styles here are a blend of experimental funk, industrial, and post-punk modes – similar to that served up on other Soul Jazz compilations of this period, but with a special focus on the DIY nature of the tiny labels. And that aspect is further enforced in the great notes – which not only offer up tune by tune tales of the releases on the set, but also tell the bigger picture of record labels and distribution during these years! Yet even without that special focus, the music here is more than great enough – and the set's a much needed revival of tracks that include "Shake The Foundations" by Glaxo Babies, "The Fish Needs A Bike" by Blurt, "Everything's Roses" by Fire Engines, "Slice 1" by The Naffs, "Ain't You" by Kleenex, "All Your Life With Me" by APB, "Looking From The Cooking Pot" by Russ McDonald, "Let's Build A Car" by Swell Maps, "You Can Choke Like That" by Biting Tongues, "Every Day I Die" by Frantic Elevators, "Fight For Peace" by Icon AD, "Tight As A Drum" by Thomas Leer, "The Slide" by Artery, "Spirit Of Youth" by The Last Gang, and "Distant Dreams (part 2)" by Throbbing Gristle. LP, Vinyl record album

Impulse, 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
CD

✨✧ Rodney FranklinIn The Center/You'll Never Know/Rodney Franklin/Endless Flight (bonus track) ... CD
Columbia/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Four soulful fusion classics from keyboardist Rodney Franklin – all together in a single set! First up is In The Center – wonderful keyboard work from the amazing Rodney Franklin – a player who sounds equally great on acoustic and electric piano! This album does a wonderful job of mixing them both – showing Rodney's more sensitive side on a few acoustic numbers, but then really taking off in a much more groove-based mode for the electric ones – which have a soaring, spacious style that's in that best blend of fusion and soul that was going down at Columbia in the late 70s – but with some spacier Bob James touches too! Most of the cuts were arranged by Byron Olsen, who's got an equally sensitive ear as Franklin – and although there's a bit of vocals on the record, most of the focus is on instrumental grooves – especially Rodney's work on the keys. Titles include the classics "I Like The Music Make It Hot", "Spanish Flight", and "On The Path" – plus "Yours", "Life Moves On", and the extended "Spring Suite". You'll Never Know is fully-formed genius from the amazing Rodney Franklin – one of the best keyboard stars to emerge from the late 70s scene! Franklin's got a great talent for balancing influences from jazz and soul in ways that are similar to contemporaries George Duke and Bobby Lyle – and like both of those players, he still stands strong in jazz, but makes some key nods to soul music on this set – adding in a bit of vocals where needed, and moving into some R&B-drenched fusion lines that all sound pretty darn hip! As on previous records, Rodney plays both acoustic and electric keys – blending them wonderfully for a very deep sound – and the group behind him features some especially nice work on reeds, which bring sharper edges to some of the best tracks on the set. There's a wonderfully deep feel to the whole thing – way more than you'd expect for a major label release at the time – and titles include "Felix Leo", "The Watcher", "The Groove", "Journey", "You'll Never Know", "Return", and "Parkay Man". Next is the self-titled Rodney Franklin – tremendous work from Rodney Franklin – one of our favorite soulful fusion players from the end of the 70s! The album's a keyboard delight through and through – and Rodney plays both acoustic and electric piano, often on the same track – which creates this nicely expanded sound that works well with the album's tight arrangements! Endless Flight is a brilliant mix of jazz, soul, and fusion – smoothed together nicely, but never in a way that's slick or commercial! Franklin's got a keen ear that lets him sit on both sides of the fence wonderfully – in a way that so many other players tried in later years, but never managed to do without losing their groove or selling out too much. Part of the strength of the album is the way that it mixes together acoustic and electric keys from track to track – deepening the spirit of the album through a good sense of pacing and mood, and also offsetting vocal tracks with some key instrumental numbers. Tom Washington produced and heavily helped in the arrangements – and titles include "Vibrations", "Benetta", "Cancion Para Mi Mama", "Dance Tonight", "Endless Flight", "Return To The Source", "Mensaje De Dios", and a surprisingly great funky take on "Hill Street Blues". Includes one bonus track – "The Groove (single version)". CD

There's maybe a very slight addition of electricity in a few spots – a bit of organ here, electric guitar there – but the core vibe is still very acoustic – and uses the very wide range of instruments the group had been experimenting with – a folk-plus lineup that includes world percussion elements, Chinese banjo, harmonica, vibes, sitar, and lots more alongside the more familiar instruments – and the great vocals of Robin Williamson and the rest of the group. Raw, incendiary live material from The Stooges, circa 1970 – recorded at NYC dive bar Ungano's, right around the time that Fun House was released! They blast through nearly all the tracks from Fun House here, minus "LA Blues", and with the rare "Have Some Fun/My Dream Is Dead", which as far as we know, was never released before Rhino Handmade dug up this incredible recording. The source was a reel-to-reel capture by someone in the audience, so the sound is a bit rough – which is of little concern when what we have here is a really important building block in creation of punk rock! Plus, the whole thing also begins with "Going To Ungano's" – street conversation that makes you feel like you're outside, going into the show. CD

A great soundtrack moment for Tangerine Dream – and one of their darkest, too! Bill Friedkin's films are always pretty darn spooky – but the music of the group definitely adds a lot here – bringing in these coldly hypnotic passages that really work wonders with the images on the screen – and, in a way, also help Tangerine Dream compress their often longform electronic musings into more of an "essence" by focusing on scene-based compositions! And even without the film, the album still really stands strongly on its own – a great maturation moment for Tangerine Dream, but one that still has all the edge and darkness of their best early recordings too. A pretty fantastic selection of rare disco tracks from the American underground – all of them infused with a spiritual message, but served up with grooves that go head to head with some of the best underground club of the time! The mix of positive energy and upbeat grooves is wonderful – and if you've ever heard the Clark Sisters club classic "You Brought The Sunshine", then you'll definitely know the spirit of these tunes! If you're worried about the message being one that you're not into, don't – because there's sort of a universal spirit going on here – one that gets past conventions of the church, and which really goes for a general uplifting message that's totally great – almost a precursor to some of the positive house in more recent decades. And speaking of house, there's less of that here than you'd expect – as most of the instrumentation and production are strongly in the best New York underground modes from the disco years – with less of any 80s or electro soul elements. Titles include "I Believe" by Calvin B Rhone, "Imitations" by Johnson Family Gospel Singers, "Change" by Wisdom, "On That Other Shore" by Harrison Jones & The Voices Of Harmony, "I've Been Converted" by The Converters, "Ain't No Way To Do Wrong" by New Creation, "Take It To The Streets" by Prophecy, "Let The Lord Come In Your Life" by Wisdom, "Keep The Fire" by Paradise, and "Jesus Is On The Mainline" by Mr Jesse R McGuire. The Pale Fountains had a great sound that predated that of many later sub-streams of 80s Brit pop – including the Creation, Sarah, and El groups – all of which owe a debt to the Pale Fountains' use of acoustic guitar, bossa-inflected rhythms, and gentle approach to an overall groove. The set's extremely well done – and although it features rarities by the group, it's actually a wonderful introduction to their music – supported by excellent tracks and a great set of liner notes. The music is even more expansive than Christian's recent trilogy for Ropeadope – especially in the rhythms, which are both earthily percussive, and very forward-thinking – kicked up way past standard jazz rhythms, and driven by a heck of a lot of percussion as well – including some from Scott himself! Fantastic sounds from a real turning point in British music – a moment when the mod groups and singers of the year before were letting in a bit more freak and fuzz – yet all in ways that still kept the songs as short, tight, and tuneful as before! You might consider this work the big bang that set up a whole second generation of genius in the UK – the catchy sort of 45s that paved the way for longer jams on albums, progressive rock experimentation, mindbending psych, and even the hard rock modes that were just around the corner. The date was recorded live at Elastic Arts in Chicago, and in some ways is a reflection of the way that space has become a hotbed for jazz creation that almost recalls the loft jazz scene of New York in the 70s – really well-matched players who are able to create in long, thoughtful progressions – often with a fair bit of force overall, given their understanding of each other's strengths from previous time together. Chris Bowden is a saxophonist at the core – and a jazz-based one too – but he works here with these incredible arrangements of his own creation, folding in both funky and fulfilling elements – heavy drums, percussion, and keyboards – but also some great string passages, and even surprisingly strong use of clarinet at times – creating these snakey elements that offset his own soulful lead. ✨✧ Peter ToshBush Doctor ... CD
Trojan, 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
During the mid 70s, a number of major label rock stars had their dalliance with reggae, and after inviting him to tour with them, the Stones decided to start releasing Peter Tosh's LPs. This record was the first of Tosh's released by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger on their Rolling Stones label and they guest on a couple of tracks. Despite their presence, the album is a fairly solid roots effort, if a bit uneven, though not quite as radical or grooving as Equal Rights or Legalize It. Tracks include "Pick Myself Up", "Soon Come", "Moses The Prophets", "Stand Firm", "Dem Ha Fe Get A Beaten", and "Creation". CD

✨✧ Art Ensemble Of ChicagoWe Are On The Edge – 50th Anniversary Celebration ... CD
PI Recordings, 2019. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 22.98
A tremendous tribute to the legendary Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a group who work here with only two of their surviving members, but with help from a constellation of jazz musicians inspired by their music! The group here is large, and includes AACM members and other younger talents – a fantastic lineup that mixes the core work of Famadou Don Moye on drums and percussion, and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds with work from Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Hugh Ragin and Fred Berry on trumpets, Tomeka Reid on cello, Jaribu Shahid and Junius Paul on basses, Enoch Williams and Titos Sompa on percussion, and Christina Wheeler on voice and a range of unusual electronic instruments! There's a very ambitious feel to the music – like some of Roscoe Mitchell's larger form creations, but with more of a spiritual jazz current that comes from the whole ensemble – and from vocal contributions from Moore Mother and Rodolfo Cordova Lebron. The double-length set features a studio album and a live album by the expanded group – and titles include "Bell Song", "We Are On The Edge", "Chi Congo 50", "Fanfare & Bell", "Odwalla/The Theme", "Tutankhamun", "Mama Koko", "Saturday Morning", and "Villa Tiamo". Philippe Doray & Les Asociaux AssociesNouveaux Modes Industriels ... LP
Souffle Continu (France), Late 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
New industrial modes from Philippe Doray and his group of French experimentalists – not sounds that fall into the industrial dance world of the late 80s, but those very early, groundbreaking creations from Throbbing Gristle and the rest of their generation! This album's maybe slightly more song-based than Doray's previous album with his group, but there's still a pretty freewheeling, all-exploded quality going on here – that same way that TG and some of their British contemporaries took all the longer experiments of Krautrock and other sonic pioneers from the early 70s, and compressed them down to shorter, noisier moments – yet which somehow often have a songform too. Titles include "Pge De Magazin", "Le Petit Herisson Jaune", "Pas De Sevice Apres Vente", "Dans Le Dadale", "Clair Et Net", and "Contrechant Magnetique". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dusty Fingers OrchestraDramatic Underscores ... LP
Dusty Fingers, 2020. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A really great project from Dusty Fingers – the beat-digging collective who turned countless producers and hip hop DJs onto the world of sound library grooves back in the 90s, thanks to their legendary collections! This album has the DF team almost returning the favor – using the title of "Dramatic Underscores", which would frequently appear on vintage sound library albums from labels like KPM or DeWolfe – and serving up their own live creations, dedicated to reviving an older sound library vibe! Instrumentation varies from track to track – as it would on a classic set – and tracks are all short, funky in their many varied ways – with instrumentation that includes Hammond, Fender Rhodes, guitar, percussion, heavy drums, and lots of cool electronics and effects. Titles include "Man Hunt", "Catfish Stew", "The Fuzz", "Blood Lust", "The Boiler Room", "The Assassin", "Two Faces Of Gemini", "The Evil That Men Do", and "Tap The Drums".
