CreationHow Does It Feel To Feel (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Demon (UK), Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
Genius work from The Creation at their best – tunes that really get at that special sort of something that set the group apart from so many others in the late 60s scene – a kind of compression of mod, garage, and psych elements into these short little tracks that still have all of their brilliance after so many years! The intensity here is maybe right up there with the early Who at their best – and the album brings together Shel Talmy-produced tracks that were originally issued as singles on the Decca, Polydor, and Hit-ton labels. Titles include "Uncle Bert", "Midway Down", "Girls Are Naked", "Sweet Helen", "Ostrich Man", "Life Is Just Beginning", "I Am The Walker", "For All That I Am", and "How Does It Feel To Feel" in both US and UK versions! CreationPower Surge (180 gram orange vinyl pressing) ... LP
Creation/Demon (UK), 1996. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
A great late moment from The Creation – a set that was issued in the mid 90s, on the Creation Records label that took its name and inspiration from the group – and which features the original 1966 lineup of the band! The production style has maybe a bit of that later UK psych moodiness, but in a way that really helps reinvigorate the group's sound – not too commercial, but also not an easy retro rehash either – as the group sound surprisingly strong on titles that include "City Life", "Power Surge", "Someone's Gonna Bleed", "Creation", "Shock Horror", "Free Men Live Forever", "Ghost Division", and "English Language". Cherry Red/Demon (UK), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
A later effort from The Creation – that fantastic UK mod psych group from the 60s who never full got their due – but whose influence was felt strongly for generations to come! This late 80s set is a great example of that – as group members Eddie Phillips and Kenny Pickett work on lean songs that really recall the charms of The Creation at their best – done for a whole new generation of listeners and labels inspired by their groundbreaking 60s material, at a level that reminds us that sometimes the originators do it best! Titles include a remake of "Making Time" – plus "Lay The Ghost", "Psychedelic Rose", "United", "Radio Beautiful", "Spirit Called Love", and "White Night". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ CreationAction Painting ... CD
Numero, Late 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the great lost groups of the UK scene of the 60s – not lost to UK audiences, or to hipsters over the generations – but still an act that never made the impact on these shores that they should! The Creation are step in step right up there with early material by The Who or Small Faces – and share a similar groundbreaking re-fusion of American roots into a new London groove – all with searing guitars, clever wordplay, and a cutting-edge spirit that may well have kept them off our charts – but which makes them so great to discover all these many years later. You might have caught a few of their songs over the years – thanks to soundtrack placement from directors like Wes Anderson, or covers by many of their bigger fans. This 2CD set features 46 tracks in all, with remastering overseen by original producer Shel Talmy – and the set includes early sides by The Mark Four, some alternate takes, and even new mixes – plus an 80 page hardcover book with scores of photos, other images, session and discographical details, and a new essay too. ✨✧ 9th CreationStep Ahead ... LP
Past Due, Early 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic music from 9th Creation – an album that was recorded in the early 80s, but never issued at the time – which is a heck of a shame, as it's some of the best work we've ever heard from the group! The album's got a great blend of funk and soul – with a deepening of both the vocal and instrumental arrangements, at a level that really keeps things interesting throughout – and which unlocks these righteous elements in the music that we totally love! There's a fair bit of uptempo tracks, but these are mixed with great mellower moments too – with a vibe that's maybe a bit like the last few Leroy Hutson albums on Curtom – which is mighty fine praise from us. The notes indicate that only cassette copies were made of the sessions, but Past Due have done a wonderful job of bringing the music back to life with surprisingly strong fidelity – and titles include "More & More", "Always Be Lovers", "Let It Shine", "Beautiful Lady", "Music Is My Pen & Paper", and "A Step Ahead". ✨✧ Blues CreationDemon & Eleven Children ... LP
Denon/Sony (Japan), 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A mindblowing set from early 70s Japan – and a record that's every bit as sinister as you'd guess from its title! Blues Creation certainly started out with a blues influence in their music, but like some of the headier British groups of the moment, they've turned that love of guitar lines and heavy rhythms into some much more brooding territory – hard rock, but with a current of evil that was never in their inspirations – almost as if these guys have shaken off the blues, and are ready to show the world that they're a force to be reckoned with! The guitar work is superb – really top-shelf classic jamming level – and titles include "Atomic Bombs Away", "Demon & Eleven Children", "One Summer Day", "Brane Baster", and "Just I Was Born". ✨✧ Leon's CreationThis Is The Beginning ... LP
Studio 10/Acid Jazz (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A rare album of funky soul from the Bay Area scene at the start of the 70s – and a set that's every bit as righteous as you might expect from the cover! The group's the creation of singer/keyboardist/arranger Leon Pattillo – hence the name – and you might know Leon from his later famous work in the 70s – including a stint with Santana, and loads of great work with other soul artists. But here, he's a young genius working in the freest, funkiest style of the San Francisco generation – with a vibe that's maybe a more spiritual take on territory explored by Sly & The Family Stone – with an earthier, more indie vibe overall. The group has great interplay – tight instrumentation, but never slick, and with some nice long-haired currents – and vocals are by Leon and a female singer – on titles that include "Confusion", "If I Had The Power", "Sightless", "Back Roads", "This Is The Beginning", and "Mirage". A fantastic Japanese group from the end of the 60s – a quartet who really live up to their name, and definitely give the blues rock movement of the Anglo world a run for its money! These guys are awash in plenty of fuzz – and the solos are long, and very trippy at points – that point of blues rock expression that's already taking things very far from its roots – even on the harmonica solos, which are pretty darn fierce too! Vocals are in English, and have an urgent intensity throughout – and titles include "Checkin Up On My Baby", "Steppin Out", "Double Crossing Time", "I Can't Keep From Crying", "Spoonful", and "Rollin & Tumblin". ✨✧ 9th CreationBubble Gum ... LP
Rite Track/Past Due, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A classic album of jazzed-up funk – the lasting legacy by this oft-sampled group! 9th Creation originally hailed from west of the Bay Area scene of the 70s – and this album was recorded in Oakland with the same sweet jazzy finish as work by some of the other big Northern California funk acts of the time – especially Pleasure, who with their sharp sense of a groove are probably the closest comparison to the group's sound. The album is best known for the cut "Bubble Gum" – a great number with lots of jazzy changes, and a modern funky groove that still sounds pretty darn fresh – but the whole album is totally great, and filled with plenty of other songs that have the same feel as the title cut! Tracks include "Sexy Girl", "Quit It", "Falling In Love", "We Need Love", and "Rule Of Mind". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ 9th CreationSuperheroes ... LP
Hilltak/Past Due, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Fantastic funk from 9th Creation – a group who really tighten up their sound for this record, but still stay as wonderful as before! There's a totally right-on-the-money vibe to the whole thing – like the best Wayne Henderson/At Home productions from the late 70s – or maybe that great Parliament moment when the group was trimming it down, but still finding a way to add in all these great elements around the edges! JD Burrise produced, and also handles the lead vocals – but the whole thing's a definite ensemble effort, and it's clear that these guys were having a hell of a time putting the record together in the studio – especially given all the sweet moments in the instrumentation – which hit some jazzy passages too. Titles include "Superheroes", "What's Shakin", "Got My Baby Back", "Shucks You're Fine", "I'd Do It Again", "Much Too Much", and the nice mellow number "Love is a Fantasy". Sweet and jazzy – very nice! LP, Vinyl record album

Sabir Mateen is working here in a slightly different setting – but he sounds amazing throughout, and continues to spin out these long, spiritual lines on tenor sax that make him a key link between avant jazz generations! The group features three Germans, recording with Mateen in New York – Christopher Dell on vibes, Christian Ramond on bass, and Klaus Kugel on drums – players who make for a very fresh blend with his talents, especially the vibes – which ring out here with these chromatic tones that only seem to deepen the sense of soul in Mateen's tenor, as he guides the quartet through one long improvised performance with a great sense of majesty and spirit! ✨✧ Rufus HarleyRe-Creation Of The Gods ... CD
Ankh/Transparency, 1972. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the most legendary albums of jazz funk ever recorded! Rufus Harley was a saxophone player who also picked up the bagpipes for a few excellent 60s albums for Atlantic Records – and although those records are great, this 1972 independent album is a real mind blower! By the time of this set, Rufus had really stretched out – both creatively and spiritually – working his standard bagpipe jazz groove into a much trippier sound, one that explored the tonal and modal properties of the instrument. Not only that, Rufus got a lot funkier than ever before – working here with organist Bill Mason, a sonic contemporary of Leon Spencer and Charles Earland – and the resultant mix of organ and bagpipes creates a monstrous sound that's unlike anything we can describe! The album's a mixture of Sufi and Biblical statements – fused into long funky jazz tracks, stretching out into some incredible grooves. Includes the classic "Malika", plus the cuts "Etymology", "Hypothesis", and "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen", done in a great heavy version! CD also features a bonus 10 minute jam not on the original album! CD

Arista/Muzak (Japan), 1971. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Reedman Oliver Lake at his most creative – stepping out here on a sublime set of 70s improvisations – all put together with a really spiritual feel! There's a very open, collaborative feel to the music – and the set was recorded in St Louis, at a time when Lake was a key part of that city's scene – and who here also seems able to attract some other musicians from the AACM in Chicago as well! As a result, the album's a wonderful document of the new ideas bursting forth at the start of the 70s – that richly creative moment when local scenes were coming together in various cities to find new ways of jazz beyond Coltrane and Dolphy – giving a player like Lake some of the most imaginative outlets of his career. Oliver plays alto, soprano, flute, and other small instruments – and other players include Baikida Carroll and Floyd Leflore on trumpets, Joseph Bowie on trombone, John Hicks on piano, Clovis Bordeaux on electric piano, Don Officer on bass, Charles Bobo Shaw on drums, and Don Moye on congas too. Titles include "Africa", "Tse Lane", "Eriee", "Zip", and "Electric Freedom". CD

There's an apple on the cover, and an apple in the name – and this British group Apple maybe owes a bit to late 60s Beatles material on Apple Records – but only in the way that they both had greatness recorded during the same time period! Apple are maybe a bit more lean, with some of the mix of psych and beat group elements that we love in The Creation – tunes that are short, focused, and catchy – but which also pack plenty into a small space too – maybe also like the energy of The Move at their start! The production is great – lots of nice stuff happening around the edges, which sounds especially great on the strong piano lines that dominate many tunes – really making the group sound a bit different than other groups that lead with the guitar – although Apple has plenty of greatness in that aspect too! An overlooked gem from the British free jazz scene of the 70s – a set issued on the Bead Records label, and one that got very little circulation at the time – but which is equally as mindblowing as work from the period on labels like Ictus and Ogun! The duo here features Roy Ashbury on drums and percussion, and Larry Stabbins on soprano and tenor – working in this free, open space, but on tracks that are often shorter than album-length improvisations – which allows the players to stop a minute, take a breath, and move into these nicely varied moments of spontaneous creation! You might know Stabbins from later 80s work on more groove-oriented records – but here, he's a tremendousimproviser, with a sense for creative reedwork that might well rival his contemporary Evan Parker. A fantastic blend of spiritual jazz styles and electronic elements – served up here by the trio of drummer Betamax, keyboardist Danalogue, and saxophonist King Shabaka – the last of whom you might recognize as Shabaka Hutchings from a host of other hip projects on the contemporary London scene! At some level, the trio is almost London's answer to some of the jazz-meets-studio work from Chicago's International Anthem label – and like some of the groups who record for that imprint, these guys are all strong jazz musicians at the core – but performing at a level that's very beyond the ordinary. Titles include "Birth Of Creation", "Summon The Fire", "Blood Of The Past", "Astral Flying", "Super Zodiac", "The Universe Wakes Up", and "Timewave Zero". CD

Stanley Cowell & Dave BurrellQuestions/Answers ... CD
Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $22.99
Amazing duo improvisations from two of the hippest pianists of the early 70s – Stanley Cowell and Dave Burrell, coming together here on a rare Japanese-only album – one that features two long tracks that each take up a side of the disc! The vibe is maybe a bit more avant at times than some of Stanley's work on Strata East, but there's also a great balance between the voices of the two players too – and the sense of spontaneous creation is wonderful throughout, and always balances individual expressions with deeper ideas – ringing out in the loud, lively space of Ino Hall in Tokyo. The record contains two long tracks – "Questions" and "Answers" – both long improvisations by the pair. CD

Decca/Universal (UK), 1969. New Copy ... $13.99 About April 28, 2021
A nice batch of late 60s psychedelic from The End – a record with that mixes the catchy idiosyncrasies of post-Sgt. Pepper Lennon/McCartney with the headier elements of groups like The Creation and Barrett-era Pink Floyd! The album was championed and produced by the Stones' Bill Wyman and engineered by rock heavyweight Glyn Johns – but this very deserving record didn't get its due at the time – perhaps because Decca didn't quite know how to sell such a record. Tracks include "Dreamworld", "Under The Rainbow", "Shades Of Orange", "Introspection (Pt. 1)", "Don't Take Me", "Loving, Sacred Loving", "She Said Yeah" and more. CD

Transversales Disques (France), Late 70s/1980s/Early 90s. New Copy ... $29.99 47.99
A range of never-issued recordings by sound wizard Luc Ferrari – all pulled from his personal archive! Side one features the very extended "Photophonie" – done for a photographic exhibition, and with a sound that's in the noisier, more striking side of the electronic spectrum at the start – then moves into these moodier, more open passages that have voices that slip in and out of the mix – almost like these whispering demons in conversation. "Il Etati Une Fois" is another long piece – one that seems to take real joy in its mix of obscure electronic textures and more pointed tones – followed by the very short "Trans-Voices", which at 52 seconds is almost a compression of the ideas of "Photophonie". Last up is "Leica" – a work with this building cyclical wave of electronic sound, and a feel that's almost like a creation from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop! LP, Vinyl record album

Rodney FranklinIn The Center/You'll Never Know/Rodney Franklin/Endless Flight (bonus track) ... CD
Columbia/Robinsongs (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99
Four soulful fusion classics from keyboardist Rodney Franklin – all together in a single set! First up is In The Center – wonderful keyboard work from the amazing Rodney Franklin – a player who sounds equally great on acoustic and electric piano! This album does a wonderful job of mixing them both – showing Rodney's more sensitive side on a few acoustic numbers, but then really taking off in a much more groove-based mode for the electric ones – which have a soaring, spacious style that's in that best blend of fusion and soul that was going down at Columbia in the late 70s – but with some spacier Bob James touches too! Most of the cuts were arranged by Byron Olsen, who's got an equally sensitive ear as Franklin – and although there's a bit of vocals on the record, most of the focus is on instrumental grooves – especially Rodney's work on the keys. Titles include the classics "I Like The Music Make It Hot", "Spanish Flight", and "On The Path" – plus "Yours", "Life Moves On", and the extended "Spring Suite". You'll Never Know is fully-formed genius from the amazing Rodney Franklin – one of the best keyboard stars to emerge from the late 70s scene! Franklin's got a great talent for balancing influences from jazz and soul in ways that are similar to contemporaries George Duke and Bobby Lyle – and like both of those players, he still stands strong in jazz, but makes some key nods to soul music on this set – adding in a bit of vocals where needed, and moving into some R&B-drenched fusion lines that all sound pretty darn hip! As on previous records, Rodney plays both acoustic and electric keys – blending them wonderfully for a very deep sound – and the group behind him features some especially nice work on reeds, which bring sharper edges to some of the best tracks on the set. There's a wonderfully deep feel to the whole thing – way more than you'd expect for a major label release at the time – and titles include "Felix Leo", "The Watcher", "The Groove", "Journey", "You'll Never Know", "Return", and "Parkay Man". Next is the self-titled Rodney Franklin – tremendous work from Rodney Franklin – one of our favorite soulful fusion players from the end of the 70s! The album's a keyboard delight through and through – and Rodney plays both acoustic and electric piano, often on the same track – which creates this nicely expanded sound that works well with the album's tight arrangements! There's a fair bit of soul in the mix too – some rhythms that make a few numbers great groovers, courtesy of Tom Tom arrangements – and some other full moments handled by Patrick Williams. Titles include a wonderful version of "Windy City" – the cut you might know from a classic Carl Davis recording – plus "On The Path", "I Like The Music Make It Hot", "Life Moves On", "Creation", and "In The Center". Endless Flight is a brilliant mix of jazz, soul, and fusion – smoothed together nicely, but never in a way that's slick or commercial! Franklin's got a keen ear that lets him sit on both sides of the fence wonderfully – in a way that so many other players tried in later years, but never managed to do without losing their groove or selling out too much. Part of the strength of the album is the way that it mixes together acoustic and electric keys from track to track – deepening the spirit of the album through a good sense of pacing and mood, and also offsetting vocal tracks with some key instrumental numbers. Tom Washington produced and heavily helped in the arrangements – and titles include "Vibrations", "Benetta", "Cancion Para Mi Mama", "Dance Tonight", "Endless Flight", "Return To The Source", "Mensaje De Dios", and a surprisingly great funky take on "Hill Street Blues". Includes one bonus track – "The Groove (single version)". CD

The rhythms at the core are really on fire – drums from Mike Mitchell and bass from Max Gerl – and the guitar of Colin Cook often matches the bold lines of Graves on piano and keyboards. Corbett vs. Dempsey, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 25.00
Rare music from this legendary Dutch free jazz collective – all pulled from the earliest years of the project, when the ICP group were every bit as important to improvised music as combos in the German and French scenes! The core players here are Misha Mengelberg on piano, Han Bennink on drums, and Willem Breuker on reeds – but with all ICP recordings, the "pool" is the most important part – as the lineup shifts fantastically, always in pursuit of new improvising possibilities – spontaneous creation amidst musicians who also include Manfred Schoof on cornet and flugelhorn, Theo Loevendie on soprano sax, Piet Noordijk on alto, Frederic Rzewski on electronics, and Willem Van Manen on trombone. Some moments have even more unusual instrumentation – steel drums, electrified viola, accordion, toy instruments, and amplified recorder – and throughout it all, the sense of unified group action and individual improvisation is tremendous. Most of the work on the CD has been unissued before – save for one track from the 53CD box ICP, and three more from a rare Dutch Jazz Scene LP box set from Radio Netherlands. 2CD set features 17 tracks in all – and titles include "Piano Distance", "Adebar Der Geheimnisvolle", "Jump Italiano", "Viet Cong", "Session No 1", "New Alto", "ICP 4 14 Write Your Own Part", "Stch Shuffle", "Siep", "Angels", and "Trammermusik". T Neck, 1969. Very Good+ ... Just Sold Out!
A stone classic from the Isleys – the album that kicked off their successful T-Neck label, and established that mighty Isleys sound that would have such a huge influence in the 70s! The title cut of the set – "It's Your Thing" – is a well-known classic that really sets the tone for the rest of the record – mixing guitar and chunky rhythms into a righteous funky style of soul that was miles away from the Brothers' earlier work on Motown and RCA. And believe it or not, the rest of the record's even better than the title cut – filled with sinister, sexy numbers that bristle with energy that's still heard best here at the point of its creation! Other gems include "Give the Women What They Want", "He's Got Your Love", "I Know Who You Been Socking It To", "Don't Give It Away", "He's Got Your Love", "Save Me", "Feel Like The World", and "Somebody Been Messin". A pair of late albums from Jefferson Airplane – issued here in a single set, with new remastering too! First up is Long John Silver – a really fantastic final studio album from Jefferson Airplane – a set that's definitely different than their early work, and which shows the new directions that members would soon take on their own – but done with a vibe that's also a fantastic evolution of the core group's famous sound! The guitar work is even more complex than before – Jorma Kaukonen really blowing us away with his skills, but never in a show-offy way, as the whole thing is wrapped around these honest core rhythms that are almost a rootsier take on psyche elements – with Grace Slick's lead vocals almost coming off with a Sandy Denny quality at times. Titles include "Long John Silver", "Aerie (Gang Of Eagles)", "Twilight Double Leader", "Milk Train", "The Son Of Jesus", "Easter", "Trial By Fire", and "East Starch Mom". Thirty Seconds Over Winterland is a late live album from Jefferson Airplane – who were at the end of their journey, but whatever their personal differences may have been at the time, they still put on a helluva great rock and roll show! Thirty Seconds Over Winterland was recorded at that legendary San Francisco venue, and at Chicago's Auditorium Theatre, with the post-Marty Balin line-up of Grace Slick, Paul Kanter, Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukomen – plus violinist Papa John Creach, drummer John Barbata and vocalist David Freiberg from Quicksilver Messenger Service. A really great showcase for the continuing evolution of Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah – a musician who's become so much more than just a straight jazz trumpet with a soulful vibe – as you'll hear on this really compelling set! The music is even more expansive than Christian's recent trilogy for Ropeadope – especially in the rhythms, which are both earthily percussive, and very forward-thinking – kicked up way past standard jazz rhythms, and driven by a heck of a lot of percussion as well – including some from Scott himself! The man also handles a variety of hip horns in addition to his trumpet – including a reverse flugelhorn, and another horn of his own creation – in a group that also features lots more percussion, a bit of piano, and guest vocalists who include Saul Williams, Mike Larry Draw, Chris Turner, and Devan Mayfield. A classic of 70s avant spiritual jazz – issued on the tiny Sweet Earth label, which was also home to some very special records from Sun Ra and Marion Brown! A pretty fantastic selection of rare disco tracks from the American underground – all of them infused with a spiritual message, but served up with grooves that go head to head with some of the best underground club of the time! The mix of positive energy and upbeat grooves is wonderful – and if you've ever heard the Clark Sisters club classic "You Brought The Sunshine", then you'll definitely know the spirit of these tunes! If you're worried about the message being one that you're not into, don't – because there's sort of a universal spirit going on here – one that gets past conventions of the church, and which really goes for a general uplifting message that's totally great – almost a precursor to some of the positive house in more recent decades. And speaking of house, there's less of that here than you'd expect – as most of the instrumentation and production are strongly in the best New York underground modes from the disco years – with less of any 80s or electro soul elements. Titles include "I Believe" by Calvin B Rhone, "Imitations" by Johnson Family Gospel Singers, "Change" by Wisdom, "On That Other Shore" by Harrison Jones & The Voices Of Harmony, "I've Been Converted" by The Converters, "Ain't No Way To Do Wrong" by New Creation, "Take It To The Streets" by Prophecy, "Let The Lord Come In Your Life" by Wisdom, "Keep The Fire" by Paradise, and "Jesus Is On The Mainline" by Mr Jesse R McGuire. Strawberry (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Just Sold Out!
A really well-titled compilation – one that gets at the special mix of music that was happening in the London mod scene of the 60s – a blend of styles that's way different than was going on here in the US at the time! There's certainly some bigger names on the collection – but the real appeal is the way those artists mix with others that never crossed the Atlantic back in the day – jazz singers, blues artists, ska/rocksteady singers, and even some UK soul artists who round out the collection and really help make a bridge between different styles! Most tunes are upbeat and pretty darn groovy – supported by a big booklet of notes that offers details on every one of the 87 artists within – a large lineup that includes Duffy Power, Richard Kent Style, Ronnie Jones, Zoot Money, Trendbender Band, Barry St John, The Chantelles, Bo Street Runners, Mark Wirtz, Rainbow Ffolly, Katch 22, Heinz, The In Crowd, Belfast Gypsies, Kevin King Lear, Artwoods, Pretty Things, Creation, David Bowie, Barney J Barnes, Rupert & The Red Devils, Andy Ellison, Plastic Penny, Australian Playboys, The Shame, Truly Smith, The Alan Bown, and many others. Outta Sight (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $16.99
Fantastic work from this excellent series – one of our most trusted sources for sweet soul and modern soul over the past decade or so! The groove is great – kind of the underground of 70s mellow – artists that might hit the territory of the Isleys or Marvin Gaye, but who are much more obscure – hand-selected by the folks at this UK collective, who really know what they're doing when it comes to vintage soul! All the cuts are great, and some rare groove classics are mixed with newly-discovered gems – in a great package of 20 tracks that includes "My Precious Love" by Gloria Walker, "The Fish Song" by New Creation, "Falling In Love" by Derek Martin, "I'll Be True" by Cookie Woodson, "It's All In The Back Of Me Now" by Linda Perry, "My Eyes" by Ernest Ernie & The Sincerities, "I'm Never Gonna Hurt You Again" by Sonny Munro, "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" by The Escorts, "Just To Satisfy My Baby" by Peggy Gaines, and "Honey Baby" by Innervision. Dexter Gordon takes it back to high school, but with a nicely mature sort of vibe – that incredible sense of extended solo creation that really marked some of his classic 60s performances like this from the European scene! The material was recorded at that time when Dex was making huge waves on the Copenhagen scene, but not issued until many years later – yet it stands with the best of his classics from those revelatory years – and features a familiar group as well – Kenny Drew on piano, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and Albert Heath on drums. The transformative power of Gordon's tenor is breathtaking throughout – and titles include "Soy Califa", "Society Red", "For All We Know", "The Blues Up & Down", and "The Shadow Of Your Smile". CD

A rare bit of Canadian psych from the start of the 70s – served up by a group with a sound that's all their own! Some numbers here are straightforward hard rockers, but others have a more complex approach – not proggy, almost performative – like some of the trippier French material of the period, which almost had a communal creation sort of vibe. There's plenty of searing guitars and very offbeat French lyrics – and the record's got a very nice sense of variety from tune to tune. Titles include "Quebec Nous T'Aimons", "Groovy", "Petite Fille T'Es Down", "OK L'Chien", "Charogne", "Heavy", and "Aux Petits Oiseux" – which is a very cool psychedelic raga that rounds out the record! Da Capo, 2016. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An insanely detailed book on the role of drugs in American music – written by a guy who's already written a fair bit about drugs and culture! This time around, Martin Torgoff turns his eye towards the postwar years – looking at the interwoven landscapes of jazz, underground culture, and drugs from the late 40s through the 60s – with chapters that look at both famous figures and lesser-known personas – in a list that includes Billie Holiday, Lester Young, William S Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Charlie Parker, and many more. The book's filled with short chapters that almost each read like a story themselves – never too exploitative, and often never with any sort of judgement at all – just surprising detail about the relation between drugs and performance, writing, or other artistic creation. These short chapters work well to weave together a world behind the scenes – subtle forces that later shaped more famous creations – and the book is a hefty 412 pages, with some black and white images. A fantastic look at the funkier side of Motown in the 70s – and a collection that's not just straight disco, thanks to the mighty selection talents of DJ Muro and T-Groove! Muro handles all of CD1 – and mixes in some excellent soundtrack numbers with more familiar soul tracks – and also presents a few classic cuts in remixed versions too! Given that the whole thing was recorded in 1983, it's actually surprisingly powerful stuff – and seems to preface the big wave of UK sounds from the Creation Records scene – a surprising move for The Damned, but one that comes off surprisingly well. A masterful call for a fresh look at a key side of black artistic creation – the use of the studio in art creation, especially in the blend of words and music that came out of some of the important jazz/poetry experiments from the late 50s through the late 70s! The book mixes theory and history in a key examination of the period – looking at collaborations between Langston Hughes and Charles Mingus, and Amiri Baraka and the New York Art Quartet – then moving into even more righteous expressions of the mode from Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor, Jeanne Lee, and Matana Roberts! The tradition has reemerged strongly in recent years – and Reed's book is not only a great way of grounding contemporary practice in a longer history, but a way to understand the true impact of these artistic creations. Four 80s albums from the mighty Augustus Pablo – served up here in a special 2CD set! First up is Blowing With The Wind – seminal 80s work from Augustus Pablo – a set that's maybe got a bit more digital and electronic touches in the mix, but which still maintains that fantastic mix of dub and melodica that made the man so unique! The tunes have very righteous rhythms at the core, and a bit of keyboards mixed in with Pablo's lead – and maybe a few spacey touches around the edges that come off in a really great way! Augustus handles all the keyboards, arrangements, and production – and titles include "Twinkling Star", "Creation Blues", "Zion UFO", "Drums To The King", "First World Call", "This Song", "Twenty One Years Later", and "Ancient Harmonies". Rockers Come East is a sweet digital set from Augustus Pablo – a mid 80s set that has him mixing his melodica with other keyboard work on Casio and Yamaha – both instruments that are used with the otherworldly, snakey groove that makes Pablo so great! The rhythms are maybe slightly more 80s, too, but still very spare and stripped down – and Phillip Smart helps on the mix, while Clive Brown and Squidley provide some drumulation. Titles include "Pablo Meets P Smart In LI", "Progression Dub", "Revelino Dub", "Babylon Loosing Dub", "Sun Ray Dub", "Jah D Special", "Rockers Come East", Dubbing The Oppressors", and "Zion Seals Dub". One Step Dub is dubby genius from the great Augustus Pablo – a set that continues the spirit of his best 70s work in this mode, but with a sound that has a few slight 80s touches! The overall sound is still very nice and spare – laidback, gently tripping in the rhythm department, and with both melodica solos from Pablo – and some other keyboard work that really echoes the moody, spacey, snakey sound of his work on the blown instrument! The title names are a bit basic, but that hardly matters, given the sound of the set – and tracks include "Riot Dub", "In The Red Dub", "Hanging Dub", "Night Patrol Dub", "Rastaman Dub", "Zion Way Dub", and "Dubbing King James". Rising Sun is fantastic work from Augustus Pablo – and a great demonstration of the way that the best of the classic 70s Jamaican artists were able to shift their styles slightly during the 80s, but still come up with a sound that was every bit as great! There's more digital elements here than before – especially in the crackle of some of the rhythms – but in ways that are right around the edges, and which echo the sort of effects that might have been cooked up by tape in the studio – used here to bring a nice bite to the mix of melodica and melodica like keyboard lines from Pablo! Mixes are by Scientist – and titles include "Dub Wiser", "Rising Sun", "Fire Red", "Jah Wind", "Pipers Of Zion", and "African Frontline". CD

One of THE electronic records of the 60s – an album so important, the Silver Apples took their name from the title – and a whole other generation of artists took strong inspiration from the electronic creations of Morton Subotnick! Before the set, much electronic music of this nature was a bit more academic, and often slightly cold – but Subotnick was able to bring things into a more organic, maybe more freewheeling style – using all sorts of cool analogue elements in ways that would run through Perry & Kingsley, Beaver & Krause, and even Stereolab! A beautiful memoir from one of our favorite songwriters of the 60s – the legendary Jimmy Webb, who first sprung on the charts with a variety of hits at a very young age! Only just a boy, Webb displayed a sensitivity with words and ear for unusual arrangements that beat the work of so many of his older predecessors in the music business – and like Burt Bacharach or Charles Stepney, Webb helped create a sound that would go on to define a generation. Jimmy tells the tales of his early years here – leaving off right at the start of the 70s, and focusing on those amazing early moments of creation, which quickly took him up to the elite of the west coast music scene. ✨✧ VariousSlight Disturbance In My Mind – The British Proto-Psychedelic Sounds Of 1966 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), 1966. New Copy 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic sounds from a real turning point in British music – a moment when the mod groups and singers of the year before were letting in a bit more freak and fuzz – yet all in ways that still kept the songs as short, tight, and tuneful as before! You might consider this work the big bang that set up a whole second generation of genius in the UK – the catchy sort of 45s that paved the way for longer jams on albums, progressive rock experimentation, mindbending psych, and even the hard rock modes that were just around the corner. You'll recognize a few of the names here as mid 60s mod heroes, but they're also mixed with some great lesser-knowns, all with the kind of deep dig that we love from these box sets on the Grapefruit label – right down to the massive booklet of notes that offers up track by track information on all the music. 84 tracks in all – with work by The Rockin Vickers, Yardbirds, Wimple Winch, John's Children, The Action, The Koobas, Fleur De Lys, The Favourite Sons, Keith Relf, The People, David Bowie, The Smoke, The Creation, Graham Bond Organization, Downliners Sect, The 5am Event, The Tomcats, The Majority, The In Crowd, Just Five, The Times, The Uglys, Outrage, and lots lots more! ✨✧ Adama BarryLembi ... CD
OK World (Norway), 2018. Used ... Out Of Stock
Spare sounds get taken to the next dimension – as the music of Adama Barry is presented in both its original creation, and in a set of remixes by Henrik Schwarz, Bugge Wesseltoft, Prins Thomas, Mental Overdrive, and others! The album's got an unusual approach – as two-thirds of the tracks just feature Burkina Faso musician Barry – who sings, and plays a range of regional instruments, with help from Solo Diarra on djembe and balafon – all on these very spare tracks that are beautiful and haunting. Then, on six of the album's fifteen tracks, the remixers step in and electrify things – often adding beats, keyboard lines, and reworking the acoustic elements in a variety of ways. Titles include "Lembi", "Maama", "Soukalen", "Serendou", "Bissa", and "Mballa". CD

✨✧ CykadaCykada ... CD
Astigmatic (UK), 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A searing live set from London's Cykada – recorded in that city's hotbed of new jazz activity, the Total Refreshment Centre – which must have been really abuzz on the night of this show! The group's got a style that's relentless and constantly moving – rhythmic, but never in conventional ways – almost with a cyclical energy that has some elements folding back on themselves while others are moving forward – an approach that's even more mindblowing once the combo really picks up the pace! The Lineup features tenor, trumpet, guitar, electric bass, drums, and some very cool electronics – on titles that include "Third Eye Thunder", "Dimension Stepper", "Creation", "Ophelia's Message", and "Realise". Steve ArringtonDown To The Lowest Terms – The Soul Sessions ... LP
Stones Throw, 2021. New Copy ... On April 9, 2021 (delayed)
Steve Arrington's got a long long legacy in soul music – one that goes back to his late 70s work on Slave – but he also sounds completely contemporary here, working in collaboration with a whole host of producers who were no doubt influenced by his creations of the past, and help Arrington find a whole new vibe in his music! Tunes are often spare, and served up in a blend of vocals, beats, keyboards, and guitar – yet all elements are given some cool, crispy twists and turns through a host of hip hop elements and other contemporary modes – but all at a level that only seems to bring new live to Arrington's music, and not overwhelm it. The set features work from Mndsgn, Gifted & Blessed, J Rocc, Knxwledge, Devin Morrison, and others – and titles include "Love Knows", "Keep Dreamin", "Soulful I Need That In My Life", "Make A Difference", "Joys Of Love", "It's Alright", "Make Ya Say Yie", "You're Not Ready", "Good Mood", and "Work On It". Art Ensemble Of ChicagoWe Are On The Edge – 50th Anniversary Celebration (4LP set) ... LP
PI Recordings/Erased Tapes, 2019. New Copy 4LP ... $54.99 69.99
A tremendous tribute to the legendary Art Ensemble Of Chicago – a group who work here with only two of their surviving members, but with help from a constellation of jazz musicians inspired by their music! The group here is large, and includes AACM members and other younger talents – a fantastic lineup that mixes the core work of Famadou Don Moye on drums and percussion, and Roscoe Mitchell on reeds with work from Nicole Mitchell on flutes, Hugh Ragin and Fred Berry on trumpets, Tomeka Reid on cello, Jaribu Shahid and Junius Paul on basses, Enoch Williams and Titos Sompa on percussion, and Christina Wheeler on voice and a range of unusual electronic instruments! There's a very ambitious feel to the music – like some of Roscoe Mitchell's larger form creations, but with more of a spiritual jazz current that comes from the whole ensemble – and from vocal contributions from Moore Mother and Rodolfo Cordova Lebron. The double-length set features a studio album and a live album by the expanded group – and titles include "Bell Song", "We Are On The Edge", "Chi Congo 50", "Fanfare & Bell", "Odwalla/The Theme", "Tutankhamun", "Mama Koko", "Saturday Morning", and "Villa Tiamo". Harun Ghulam Barabbas & Alaeddin AdlernestBreath Of The Masters – Smile ... CD
Black Monk (Austria), 1982. New Copy ... $18.99
Two players we don't really know at all, but coming together here in a sublime set of reed-based creations – Alaeddin Adlernest on bassoon and Haru Ghulam Barrabas on alto sax – four long tunes that each have some sort of structure, but also balance things nicely with a sense of freedom – a bit like some of the looser that Jimmy Giuffre or Lee Konitz were making during the 60s and 70s! Given the use of bassoon, there's almost some echoes of the Arkestra here – or the sparer moments that the Arkestra might feature on a solo – and Barabbas has some very unusual phrasing on alto sax, too – which comes across wonderfully here next to the less-conventional horn. Really beautiful throughout – with titles that include "Einstein", "Smile", "Al Bab", and "Music Navigation". CD

A beautiful book of graphic imagination – a book that features 60s-styled ads for toys that never existed – but which take us back to the glory days of Matchbox, Big Daddy Roth, and Aurora Monster Models! Ran BlakeComplete Remastered Recordings On Black Saint/Soul Note (Improvisations/Duke Dreams/Suffield Gothic/Short Life/Epistrophy/Umarked) (7CD set) ... CD
Black Saint (Italy), 1980s/1990s. New Copy 7CD ... $32.99 41.98
Pianist Ran Blake first came into prominence in the 60s – as one of the most striking, most inventive modern players of his generation – but unfortunately, his time on record wasn't always as great as his talents – until the Black Saint/Soul Note label corrected that with this great run of records from the 80s and 90s! This box brings together all of Blake's work for the label – a total of seven albums, each presented here in their original album cover art, as tiny record sleeves in a larger box that includes the albums Improvisations, Duke Dreams, Suffield Gothic, Shoft Life Of Barbara Monk, Epistrophy, Umarked Van, and Indian Winter. Duke Dreams and Epistrophy are solo albums – with Blake extrapolating on ideas from Ellington and Monk, respectively. Improvisations features beautiful spontaneous creations with pianist Jaki Byard – and Suffield Gothic is another striking duet album, with especially creative work from tenorist Houston Person. Short Life Of Barbara Monk features a quartet with Ricky Ford on tenor – and the set's completed by two more duet albums – Unmarked Van with Tiziano Tononi, and Indian Winter with David Knife Fabris. Cypress HillCypress Hill (25th Anniversary Skull) ... CD
Columbia/Get On Down, 1991. New Copy ... $32.99 75.98
Cypress Hill's debut masterpiece – one of the biggest and best first albums in 90s hip hop – in cased here in skull for its 25th Anniversary! There's little we can add to the canon when it comes to describing this album's impact, but it's still pretty revelatory. Like other west coast rap heavies of the time, Cypress Hill documents real world street violence with a darkly comic sensibility, redefined usage of the word "blunt" forever more, and simply delivered one of the most influential rap (or rock. . .considering the astonishing crossover success) albums of the decade. "How I Could Just Kill A Man", "Hand On The Pump", "Hole In The Head", "Real Estate", "Stoned Is The Way Of The Walk", "Phunky Feel One", "Pigs", "Latin Lingo", "Something For The Blunted", "Psychobeatbuckdown" and more. Get On Down's 25th Anniversary is one of the coolest, craziest things we've seen for a commemorative anniversary edition ever – housed in an amazin, hard resin black skull – essentially a 3D physical recreation of the group's 1991 logo – plus a 100 page hardcover book! CD

✨✧ Willie DixonI Am The Blues ... LP
Columbia, 1970. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A long-overdue recognition of the blues contributions of Willie Dixon – a set that pulls him out of the indie ghetto and pushes him firmly into the mainstream with this key release on Columbia Records! Yet despite that placement, the style is nicely down home – a strong recreation of older Chicago blues modes by producer Abner Spector – one that has Willie singing versions of his classic tunes like "Back Door Man", "The Seventh Son", "Little Red Rooster", "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man", and "The Same Thing".
