✨✧ CradleHistory (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... CD
Modern Harmonic, Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Overlooked genius from this all-female group at the end of the 60s – a combo that features Quatro Sisters Patti, Suzi, and Nancy – serving up an unusual brew of offbeat numbers and some more hard-rocking tracks that point the way towards their greater fame! There's a really freewheeling vibe to the record – not girl rockers trying to beat the boys, but instead an open-minded approach that's brimming over with new ideas and a freshness of sound that echoes with some occasional artier inspirations we never would have expected – maybe a dose of that special Detroit energy that was so mind-expanding at the time! Titles include "Heat", "See The Two", "Peter Porno", "Funny Man", "Last Laugh", "Dream", "Man Is A Man", and "Living Machine". CD

✨✧ Thug Life (2Pac)Thug Life Vol 1 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Interscope, 1994. New Copy ... $22.99 24.99
The first and only volume from Tupac's Thug Life group – with Big Syke, Macadoshis, Mopreme, The Rated R guest appearances by YNV & Nate Dogg – raw street rap with an uncommonly soulful backdrop for the time! Thug Life came out in the midst of the early 90s gangsta rap media backlash, and whether or the final track list was a result of that or not, the mix of hardcore rhymes with some more tender soul samples of The O'Jays, Curtis Mayfield and more on a few tracks give a more contemplative vibe here and there – and Tupac is at near peak charismatic flow on his turns at the mic, too. Includes "Bury Me A G" with Natasha Walker of YNV, "Don't Get It Twisted", "Pour Out A Little Liquor", "Stay True", "Under Pressure", "Street Fame", "Cradle To The Grave", "Str8 Ballin'". ✨✧ Chuck BerryFrom St Louie To Frisco ... LP
Mercury, Late 60s. Very Good- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The title might say "Frisco", but the album's a real back-to-basics record from Chuck Berry – produced by the man himself, with a lean, stripped-down vibe that almost goes back to his earlier work at Chess Records! There's definitely a few 60s soul currents in the mix, but in the best way possible – helping Berry mature his sound a bit, but without turning it towards any easy crossover gimmicks – which means that there's still a lot of bluesy elements at the core, and Chuck's charms really come through on both his vocals and guitar. Titles include "Louie To Frisco", "Ma Dear", "The Love I Lost", "Rock Cradle Rock", "Misery", and "I Can't Believe". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has a small cutout hole.)

✨✧ Teena MarieIt Must Be Magic ... LP
Gordy, 1981. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Maybe the greatest album that Teena Marie ever cut – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of the lady's work for Motown! The set's got this bright, positive bounce that grabs you right from the start – but also moves into a depth that's way different than other funk albums of the time – a way with a ballad and a thoughtful track that almost makes Marie the 80s heir to the Minnie Riperton legacy, especially given the strength of her voice on the set – and the fact that Teena wrote and produced the whole album herself! At a time when so many other female soul singers were at the mercy of other folks' talents and ideas, Lady T steps forth boldly with this classic set – brimming over with greatness on cuts that include the stellar "Portuguese Love", plus "Yes Indeed", "Where's California", "Opus III", "Square Biz", "365", "Revolution", and "Ballad Of Cradle Rob & Me". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has light wear and a cutout notch.)

✨✧ Margaret LewisReconsider Me – The Ram Singles & More Southern Gems ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Really great work from Margaret Lewis – a Louisiana singer/songwriter from the glory days of the indie label 45 scene – and one who works here with a very unique blend of rock, soul, and country modes! It's a bit hard to sum of Margaret's music in words – but lots of this material has hard-edged charms of the young Wanda Jackson – mixed maybe with some influences from the R&B scene at the time, particularly some of the hipper female singers in New Orleans! All the work here was recorded by the Ram Records label in Shreveport, but a good deal of it was unissued at the time – and the package also includes 13 tracks new to CD – combined with a fantastic set of notes that provide an overview of the unusual Lewis musical legacy. Titles include "John DeLee", "Lover's Land", "Bow Wow Puppy Love", "Cheaters Can't Win", "Shake A Leg", "One Today Another Tomorrow", "No No Never", "Reconsider Me", "You Said You Love Me", "Yea Yea Baby", "Hold Me", "Something's Wrong Baby", "From The Cradle To The Blues", and "Teardrop Valley". ✨✧ Ivo Perelman & Matthew ShippAmalgam ... CD
Mahakala, 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most beautiful albums we've heard from pianist Matthew Shipp in many years – and maybe one of the nicest from saxophonist Ivo Perelman too – a set of duets that really bring out the warmth and personality of both musicians, as they improvise freely in a number of shorter segments – never trying to outdo each other, nor push their energy past the point of meaningful creativity! Instead, there's a really careful balance going on here – sounds from Perelman that are pointed, but never too sharply – cradled by the piano of Shipp in these tones that are equally thoughtful – often placed in a lower register, so that both voices are very separated – but clearly joined together in spontaneous spirit. The set features a dozen improvisations, beautifully recorded. CD
