AzymuthAzymuth Live At The Copacabana Palace (turquoise vinyl pressing) ... LP
Culture Factory, 1979. New Copy ... $27.99 29.99
A great live set from Azymuth – recorded in Rio in 1979, with a harder, more open feel than most of their studio work of the time! The set takes off with the intensity of a classic 70s fusion set – led by the majestic keyboards of Jose Roberto Bertrami, really kicking out here with a sound that's not nearly as restrained as on the group's studio albums for Fantasy. Aleuda joins the trio on vocals on a few cuts, and titles include "Jazz Carnival", "Partido Alto", "Light As A Feather", "Montreux", "Dona Olimpia", "Voo Sobre O Horizonte", and "Existe Isto". ✨✧ Junior MendesCopacabana Sadia ... CD
Columbia/Athens Of The North (UK), 1982. Used ... Out Of Stock
Great modern soul from Brazil – a tight little set that's got a similar vibe to some of the work that Marcos Valle and Leon Ware were doing together in the early 80s! The groove here is nice and jazzy – arranged by Lincoln Olivetti in a style that's funky, but laidback too – a warm post-disco approach that produces lots of upbeat tunes, but which state their case in a very classy way! Junior sings in Portuguese throughout, but with phrasing that almost makes for a universal sense of soul – and there's a sunny glow to the whole thing that really goes beyond the boundary of language. Titles include "Rio Sinal Verde", "Agre Doce", "Super Sensivel", "Hora H", "Via Aerea", "Pedras De Cristal", "Entrego A Deus", "Obvio", and "Copacabana Sadia". CD

Elizeth Cardoso & Cyro MonteiroA Bossa Eterna de Elizeth e Ciro Vol 2 ... LP
Copacabana (Brazil), 1969. Very Good ... $19.99
The second volume of 60s samba tracks cut by Elizeth Cardoso and Cyro Monteiro – and every bit as great as the first one! The backing is by the small combo of Caculinha, which mixes together piano, accordion, organ, and bandolim into a choppy rootsy groove that's a perfect counterpoint to the warmer and more sentimental vocals of Elizeth and Cyro – and the album features two longer "pout-pourri" numbers, plus 9 shorter tunes. Titles include "Louco", "Certa Maria", "Presente De Uma Flor", "Sei La Mangueira", "Coracao Malvado", and "Nao Tem Mais Jeito". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear, a center split in the bottom seam and a light stain at the bottom corner.)

Elizeth Cardoso e Zimbo TrioBalancam Na Sucata ... LP
Copacabana (Brazil), 1975. Good ... $3.99
The Zimbo Trio backs up Elizeth Cardoso on this groovy LP of bossa tracks recorded in a live setting. The set's got a few of those "pot pourri" selections, where the singer runs through a lot of different tunes in a medley – but the best cuts are the straight ones – like "Pra Voce", "Sabia", and "Samba Do Perdao". Plus, the record's got some even better tracks that are instrumentals by Zimbo – like "Ponteio" and "Sentinela". LP, Vinyl record album
(Yellow label pressing. NOTE – Vinyl has a edge warp and will skip on the first track on each side. Cover has ring & edge wear, aging, name in pen.)

Copacabana (Brazil), 1974. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Benito sings kind of a lounge version of samba, with tight jazzy piano lines, and warm backing by a small combo and a vocal group. The best cuts get pretty lively, and the record's got some nice groovers buried in the mix. Titles include "Vou Cantar Vou Sambar", "Meu Enredo", "Tributo A Um Rei Esquecido", "Preludio No 4", "Novo Rio", and "Alem De Tudo". LP, Vinyl record album
(Black & white label pressing. Cover has edge wear, clear tape on the bottom seam, tiny peel at the top with some sticker remnant.)

OrlandivoOrlandivo (1977) ... CD
Copacabana/Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1977. New Copy ... $7.99 18.99
A sweet funky classic from 70s Brazil – one of those records that's found thousands of funky fans over the decades – and which still continues to please! The set's the best-ever from Orlandivo – a soulful singer whose set up perfectly here with funky backings from the great Joao Donato – working on organ and Fender Rhodes for the set, and hitting the same soulful styles as his own great 70s albums! Grooves have a sunny feel, but these jazz funk undercurrents that are completely infectious – wicked interplay between the bass and drums, guitar and keyboards – set to vocals from Orlandivo that clearly borrow some of Jorge Ben's soulful influence too. Other players include Sivuca on accordion, Durval Ferreira on guitar, and Helcio Milito on percussion – and titles include "Um Abraco No Bengil", "Palladium", "A Felicidade", "Tudo Joia", "Juazeiro", and "Bolinha De Sabao" – plus the great "Tamaco No Samba", which is a thinly disguised version of "Samba Blim". Copacabana (Brazil), 1970. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
A near-forgotten gem from Elizeth – recorded in 1970, but done with a style that mixes together rootsy samba and some of the lighter instrumentation of the bossa era – often using organ to infuse the grooves with a nice sense of electric jazziness, while still keeping the overall feel nice and acoustic! Titles include a great version of Baden Powell's "E De Lei" – plus "Degraus Da Vida", "Carta De Poeta", "Camisa Branca", "Lua Aberta", "Tudo Ok", "Refem Da Solidao", and "Corrente De Aco". ✨✧ Elizeth Cardoso & Cyro MonteiroA Bossa Eterna de Elizeth e Ciro Vol 1 ... CD
Copacabana/EMI (Brazil), 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful set of duets from 60s samba stars Elizeth Cardoso and Ciro Monteiro – released in collaboration with the Bossaudade TV show! The sound here is light and lively – with backing from Caculinha and his combo, who mix together acoustic samba rhythms with a nice touch of electric organ – for a sound that's got some nice Walter Wanderley elements, but still retains a strong samba groove, with plenty of choppy bandolim in the arrangements. Elizeth and Ciro duet on a number of tracks – including a few longer "pout-pourri" medleys, and they each sing a few numbers on their own as well. Titles include "Melancolia", "Franqueza", "Beija-Me", "Se Acaso Voce Chegasse", and "Tem Que Rebolar". CD

Chico Buarque, Ney Matogrosso, Gal Costa, & OthersMalandro ... LP
Barclay (Brazil), 1985. Near Mint- ... $9.99
The soundtrack for the film version of Chico Buarque's famous opera Malandro – and quite possibly the best recording of the music we've heard! The style here really benefits from the tighter studio production of the film – and the tunes are put together with strong arrangements that have a bit more force than some of the live recordings of the music we've heard, but in a way that still also allows for plenty of up-close intimacy in the vocals. All performances here are great, and really bring a lot out of the tunes – and Gal Costa sings "O Ultimo Blues", Paulinho Da Viola sings "Aquela Mulher", Zizi Possi sings "Sentimental", Bebel Gilberto sings "Rio 42", Elba Ramhalo sings "Palavra De Mulher", Os Muchachos sing "Tango Do Covil", Ney Matogrosso sings "Las Muchachos De Copacabana", and Chico Buarque sings "A Volta Do Malandro". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes the heavy inner sleeve. Cover has light wear and is lightly bent at the right side.)

Clara Moreno with Celso Fonseca & JoyceMeu Samba Torto (UK pressing) ... CD
Far Out (UK), 2007. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
Clara Moreno's working here with some famous help in the credits – but the sound of the album is definitely all her own, and even better than some of her other great sets in recent years! The style is mostly bossa, but served up with a slightly modern approach – not one that's electrified or remixed, but nicely free of cliches that try to hard to conjure up images from the old days – done in a sparely evocative mode that really gets to the best heart of the bossa, and re-presents it wonderfully with Clara's youthful talents! Moreno's on vocals throughout – although Celso Fonseca sings a bit on a few duets – and instrumentation includes acoustic guitar from both Fonseca and Joyce on some tracks, plus drums by Tutty Moreno. Most instrumentation is acoustic, and quite stripped down – sometimes only a bit of guitar, bass, and percussion behind the vocals – giving Clara plenty of room to stand on her own, center stage. Titles include "Rosa De Ouro", "Litoranea", "Sabe Quem", "Sei La", "Moca Flor", "Mon Manege A Moi", "Tenderly", "Ela Vai Pro Mar", "Vem Morena Vem", and "Copacabana". CD

✨✧ Sam CookeSam Cooke At The Copa ... LP
RCA, 1964. Very Good- ... Out Of Stock
A classic live album – one of the first in soul music, and a beautiful set of smooth soul tunes from Sam Cooke! Sam's singing at the high-end nitespot The Copacabana – and like many live sets performed there, this one's tailored a bit to the classy crowd at the show – but that doesn't stop him from using his voice to perfection, sweetly crafting beautiful lines on a batch of standards given the soul treatment, plus a few of Sam's own hits. And sure, it's easy to criticize this album after the release of the Live At The Harlem Square album in the mid 80s – which was recorded a year earlier, but rejected by RCA in favor of this album's crossover potential – but keep in mind that for most folks who didn't grow up with the hindsight of reissues, this album was all they had, and it still had quite an impact in the soul market. Titles include "The Best Things In Life Are Free", "Try A Little Tenderness", "If I Had A Hammer", "Twistin The Night Away", "You Send Me", and "This Little Light Of Mine". LP, Vinyl record album
(Original stereo pressing with deep groove. In a mono cover, with splitting on the bottom & top seams, edge wear, surface wear & aging, some corner staining on the back cover.)

Fantastic – and one of the best albums ever by Elza Soares! She's singing here with the crack drummer Wilson Das Neves backing her up – and the incredible Nelsinho provides the rest of the musical backing, in a lively way that really keeps the groove nicely. The set features the crackling hard bossa number "Deixa Isso Pra La", plus a truckload of other great big band bossa tracks, all augmented by Das Neves' hard hard drums. Titles include "Samba De Varao", "Saudade Da Bahia", "Teleco Teco No 2", "O Pato", "Copacabana", "Edmundo", and "Garota De Ipanema". Nice cover, too! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ JoyceJoyce Ao Vivo ... CD
EMI (Brazil), 2008. Used ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful live work from Joyce – a singer we love in any sort of setting, but one who really seems to open up nicely in front of an audience! The approach here is very much in classic Joyce mode – very intimate and personal, with instrumentation that just includes Joyce on guitar, Tutty Moreno on drums, plus a bit of bass and added guitar – all served up in a warmly jazzy style that fits beautifully with Joyce's legendary vocals. Most tunes have a breezy sort of feel, even when mellow – and the album features guest appearances by Joao Donato, Dori Caymmi, Leila Pinheiro, and Monica Salmaso – who all join Joyce here in a celebration of her 40 years in music. Titles include "Samba De Mulher", "E Era Copacabana", "Misterios", "Clareana", "E Passa O Carrossel", "Samba Da Zona", "Monsieur Binot", "Feminina", "Havana Me", and "Revendo Amigos". CD

✨✧ VariousJazz In Brazil ... LP
Honey Pie, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A compilation that's way more than jazz – as it features cuts from a moment when Brazilian music was really coming into its own during the bossa nova generation, yet still had some ties to earlier styles as well – which means that in addition to the sorts of bossa tunes you'd expect, you'll also hear versions of songs by Horace Silver, Cole Porter, and George Gershwin! The selection of cuts is nice – and the record begins with some straighter jazz numbers that evolve into bossa – in a lineup that includes "Nana" by Os Cobras, "O Menino Desce O Morro" by Milton Banana, "Samba In The Perrotoquei" by Bola Sete, "I Got Rhythm" by Dick Farney, "Nica's Dream" by Sergio Mendes, "Love For Sale" by Rubens Bassini, "Copacabana" by Brazilian Jazz Quartet, "Esperanca" by Tamba Trio, "Influencia Do Jazz" by Ed Lincoln, and "O Morro Nao Tem Vez" by Joao Donato. LP, Vinyl record album
