SpiritualizedLadies & Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space ... CD
Arista, 1997. Used ... $6.99
A surprisingly big breakthrough for Spiritualized – something we never would have guessed from the underground years of Spacemen 3 in the decade before! The set fuses that previous group's love of fuzz and space with a tighter sense of songwriting – that new psych blend of guitars and beats that was taking the British scene so strongly in the years after the emergence of Happy Mondays and other groups of their generation – carried forward strongly here by Spiritualized at a level that's maybe a bit hipper and more sonically interesting. All tracks are penned by leader J Spaceman – and titles include "Come Together", "Broken Heart", "No God Only Religion", "Cool Waves", "Cop Shoot Cop", "All Of My Thoughts", and "Electricity". CD

✨✧ Oliver Nelson/Jerry FieldingZigzag/Super Cops ... CD
Film Score Monthly, 1970/1973. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
2 killer 70s soundtracks back to back in one package – both augmented by loads of bonus tracks! First up is the score to Zigzag, a really standout score from Oliver Nelson – a set that's got some of his groovier touches at times, but also features some pretty great straighter scoring as well! The record really shows Nelson stepping out from his older role as a strictly jazz-based arranger – and although there are some jazz touches here, there's also some even more impressive larger orchestrations that soar out with a majestic use of strings. The CD features 10 tracks from the film, 11 more from the album recording for MGM, and 6 especially rare numbers sung by Anita O'Day for the film, and The Outfit! Roy Orbison sings a vocal number called "Zigzag" – and other instrumental tracks include "The Other Car", "Love Theme", "Earphones", "This Robe Is Shot/Out Of Focus", "Breakout", "This Is A Brain Tumor", "Yes Your Honor", and the great "Variation Of Themes", which has a wonderfully dancing bossa groove to it! Anita O'Day songs include "I Concentrate On You", "On Green Dolphin Street", "You Were Meant For Me", and "Everything I Have Is Yours". Jerry Fielding's score to Super Cops is pretty great too – a really driving action soundtrack that's filled with some of his trademark touches! The main theme has a snapping drum that's almost militaristic at times, but a lot more rhythmic – and used to punctuate some of the funkier tracks on the record – giving them a driving, urgent feel that's totally great! Instrumentation often features complicated horn passages, cascading down over one another – but there's some other tracks that are more in a straight ahead funky mode too, with some of the electric 70s cop touches you might expect! The CD features 20 tracks from the original film – and adds in 5 more from the film Hawkins, and another batch of 5 more from Jerry Fielding's Source Cafe, including instrumental cues from The Outfit. Titles include "The Sniper", "Angels/Everybody Down", "Pull The Shade", "Interior Hock Shop", "After Shoot", "Rotunda", "Blood Feud", and "Murder In The Slave Trade". CD

Norah JonesCome Away With Me ... CD
Blue Note, 2002. Used ... $0.99
Although we're a bit ashamed to admit this, it took us about a year and a half – waaaaaay too long, to come around on Norah Jones. Grammy Awards often bring out our inner cynic. Anyway, we get it now – and better late than never, right? Norah is probably the single best thing to have happened to mainstream pop/vocals in at least a decade, if not longer – and she sings her mellow magic with backing by true jazz session heroes to boot. Beautiful, mellow jazz pop bliss if there ever was such a thing. A trillion copies sold, but the real value is found in the timeless tunes. Thanks Norah, thanks Blue Note!!! Tracks include "Don't Know Why", "Seven Years", "Cold Cold Heart", "Shoot The Moon", "Turn Me On", "Nightingale", and more. CD

ImaginationsGood Stuff ... LP
20th Century, 1974. Near Mint- ... $44.99
A great bit of Chicago soul from the 70s – by a short-lived group who were sort of an offshoot of Brighter Side Of Darkness, who had scored earlier in the decade with the falsetto hit "Love Jones". This one was produced by Clarence Johnson/Star Vue Productions, and licensed to 20th Century, like the earlier work – and the record features a remake called "Love Jones 75". There's loads of other great stuff on the record, though – and the groove runs through the funk of "Tipsy Mood" and "Kung Fu You", to the mellower soul sounds of "I Found My Dancing Girl", and wonderfully sweet little number! (Cover has a cut corner, but this is a great copy!)
