Ernestine AndersonLive From Concord To London ... LP
Concord, 1978. Near Mint- ... $9.99
70s live material from singer Ernestine Anderson – half from the Concord Jazz Festival, half from a London performance at Ronnie Scott's – hence the title! The first half has this swinging jazz festival vibe – Ernestine really reaching out to win over the crowd with her charms, and backing by a core trio with Hank Jones on piano, occasionally expanded into a bigger ensemble. The London tracks are a bit more intimate, and feature a trio with John Horler on piano – and some especially great phrasing from Anderson. Titles include "Stormy Monday", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "I Don't Get Around Much Anymore", "Love For Sale", and a long "Ellington Medley". LP, Vinyl record album
(Coverh as light surface wear and a small trace of a price sticker.)

Sublime subtle magic from the great Art Farmer – set up here in a laidback quartet setting that really lets him do what he does best! Art is on flugelhorn throughout – with a young Fred Hersch on piano, Bob Bodley on bass, and Billy Hart on drums. Includes the original Hersch songs "One For Sam" and "Summersong" – and a great reading of the fantastic Duke Pearson tune "You Know I Care". LP, Vinyl record album

Jack McDuffBest Of The Concord Years ... CD
Concord, 1990s. Used 2 CDs ... $11.99
Sure, it's not Prestige Records in the 60s, but the music is still plenty darn great – thanks to the never-failing talents of Brother Jack McDuff in his later years! At the time these sides were released, we remember wincing that Jack had moved onto Concord Records – often home of the softer side of jazz. But as the records came out, we were impressed at the strength of their grooves – and the way that McDuff could hold onto a classic Hammond-heavy sound in the Concord setting – and never give into some of the sleepier modes of the label. Production here is all pretty great – clear and clean, and with plenty of space for Jack to unleash some of his impeccably creative solos – and other players on the dates include Gene Harris on piano, Red Holloway on tenor, Joey DeFrancesco on Hammond, and George Benson on guitar. 2CD set features 18 tracks that include "Rock Candy", "Killer Joe", "Cold Duck Time", "Blooze In G", "Pork Chops & Pasta", "Sundown", "Pettin The Cat", "Mission Impossible", "Hot Barbecue", and "J&G Blues". CD

Ernestine AndersonBig City ... LP
Concord, 1983. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Ernestine Anderson at the height of her powers – caught during a very successful run at Concord Records, where she was easily one of the hippest things going down at the time! The group here is a trio, and very tight – Hank Jones on piano, Monty Budwig on bass, and Jeff Hamilton on drums – all shifting easily to fit the mood and personal demeanor of Anderson's performance, which is a fair bit more dynamic than other jazz singers of the period. In a way, the record's got a similar feel to Lorez Alexandria's albums from the time – hip soul jazz vocals at its best, with just the right twists, turns, and rhythmic impulses to keep things interesting – but not enough to goof things up too much! Titles include "Big City", "Welcome To The Club", "All Blues", "All I Need Is You", "Spring Is Here", and "I'll Never Pass This Way Again". LP, Vinyl record album

Concord, 1985. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A great cooker from the glory days of Ernestine Anderson on Concord Records – a time when the singer was rediscovered, and revamped in a bit of a bluesy mode – reaching a wide new audience at the time! Her vocals really shine at this point in her career, as she lets loose with a bit more personality too – as you'll hear on this swinging set of down home numbers, cut with a combo that includes Red Holloway on tenor, Ray Brown on bass, and Gene Harris on piano! Titles include "Someone Else Is Steppin", "Goin To Chicago Blues", "Alone On My Own", "Mercy Mercy Mercy", and "I Love Being Here With You". LP, Vinyl record album

Gary BartzHarlem Bush Music – Uhuru (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Milestone/Concord, 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $26.99 29.99
An essential record from Gary Bartz – one of two albums he cut with Andy Bey, and the killer group he was calling his NTU Troup! Andy's vocals are incredible – light years ahead of anything he did with his sisters, and similar to those he laid down on his own solo album for Atlantic, and on Blue Note sides with Horace Silver – a righteous mix of jazz and soul, with a burning intensity that makes the political themes of the tracks come out strongly. The album includes one of Andy's all time classics – the original 7 minute version of "Celestial Blues", plus the fantastically grooving "Uhuru Sasa" – as well as the cuts "The Planets", and "Blue (A Folk Tale)". And Gary Bartz is pretty great too – dropping in these angular reed lines that really give the record an edge, and which sound totally great next to Bey's vocals! LP, Vinyl record album

Art BlakeyIn This Korner (with bonus track) ... CD
Concord, 1978. Used ... $9.99
Art Blakey at the Keystone Korner – really rattling the rafters with a great lineup that includes Bobby Watson on alto sax, David Schnitter on tenor, and Valery Ponomarev on trumpet! Although the Shorter/Morgan lineup is always hailed as one of Blakey's best, we're also pretty partial to this great late 70s stretch of The Jazz Messengers – as it shows some wonderful early flowering of Watson's alto, and his songwriting abilities; Ponomarev's well-blown trumpet lines; and Schnitter's crisp, sharp lines on tenor – always carved out with a great depth of feeling. Add to the mix some great piano from James Williams, and bass from Dennis Irwin, and you've got a great lineup next to Blakey's drums – all working together in a rough-edged, hard soul space on tracks that include "Pamela", "Unlimited", "Dark Side Light Side", "Blues For Two", and "In This Korner". CD also features the bonus track "1977 AD". CD
(Tray card has a light stain along one edge – booklet and disc are both great.)

Art Blakey & The Jazz MessengersNew York Scene ... CD
Concord/King (Japan), 1984. Used ... $9.99
Overlooked genius from Art Blakey's 80s years – a time when he was recording for a variety of smaller labels, but turning out work that was every bit as fresh and vibrant as his sides from the 60s and 70s! As always with the Jazz Messengers, the group's filled with up-and-coming jazz talents that really make the record great – trumpet from Terence Blanchard, tenor from Jean Toussaint, alto from Donald Harrison, piano from Mulgrew Miller, and bass from Lonnie Plaxico – all players who leave their own imprint strongly on the record, yet still fall into line with the core groove supplied by Blakey's drums. Titles include Blanchard's "Oh By The Way", Harrison's "Controversy", and Miller's "Falafel" – all wonderfully soulful numbers – plus a "Ballad Medley", and a version of "Tenderly". CD

Ray Brown Trio With Ralph MooreMoore Makes 4 ... CD
Concord, 1990. Used ... $5.99
We're not normally great fans of the Ray Brown Trio, but this album's a corker – thanks to some great tenor work by Ralph Moore! Moore's a the height of his powers here – blowing with an easy soulfulness that recalls the classic late 50s work of Hank Mobley. His presence on the set really opens things up – and althoguh Brown's trio is more than fine, and Gene Harris' piano is always a treat, it's really Moore's tenor work that makes this album a gem. Titles are mostly standards, but done with imagination – and titles include "The Champ", "Polka Dots & Moonbeams", "Like Someone In Love", "Quasimoto", "Ralph's Boogie", and "SOS". CD

Concord, 2022. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
An unusual project from Butcher Brown – a set that was originally written as a hip hop project for MC Tennishu, and which only gets plenty of instrumentation from the Butcher Brown combo, in their best funky jazz mode – but also has an added large ensemble really bumping up the sound! There's still plenty of hip hop on the record, but instrumentation is all live jazz and in a mode that so many others tried to do years back, but maybe never got this right. Really classic-styled fusion from the team of Chick Corea and John McLaughlin – a record that almost rivals any of their legendary sets recorded back in the 70s! The group here is a really old school fusion ensemble – Corea on keyboards, McLaughlin on guitar, and other great players who include Kenny Garrett on saxes, Christian McBride on bass, and Vinnie Colaiuta on drums – the latter two of whom provide tight rhythms to really drive the soloists over the album's long, extended jams! Almost all tracks are over 10 minutes in length – and a few are longer than 20 minutes – and titles include "Raju", "The Disguise", "New Blues Old Bruise", "Hymn To Andromeda", "Dr Jackle", "Senor CS", and a version of "In A Silent Way/It's About That Time" with guest piano from Herbie Hancock. Nubya GarciaSource ... CD
Concord, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic full-length debut from Nubya Garcia – a tenor saxophonist who's been making big waves on the London scene in recent work – and who, like most of her contemporaries in that city, is determined to push jazz into new dimensions that will keep the artform growing and alive for decades to come! At the core is Nubya's quartet – an excellent group that features Joe Armon-Jones on piano and Wurlitzer, Daniel Casimir on bass, and Sam Jones on drums – all working with energy that's boundless, and always has us running to the notes to figure out of there's more people working than just those four! And in most cases, that's not what's going on – save for a few spots that feature guest trumpet from Ms Maurice, and the occasional vocal appearance – hardly distractions from the amazing spirit and energy of the quartet at the core. Really wonderful work from a player who is rising up to be a key part of the next generation of jazz – on titles that include "Together Is A Beautiful Place To Be", "Source", "The Message Continues", "Pace", "La Cumbia Me Esta Llmando", and "Boundless Beings". One of the best later moments from the great Stan Getz – a set we might even place on the same level as his 60s work for Verve – and certainly at the same par as his records in the 70s for Columbia! Yet this set is quite different than that latter batch – as it has Getz really going back to basics – hitting an open, flowing vibe that shows all the best elements he picked up from 60s changes – including bossa, traces of Coltrane, and more – but delivered with a wonderfully understated style throughout. The tracks are long, and have a magnificent flow – and Getz works with a great quartet that includes Lou Levy on piano, Monty Budwig on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums. Titles include a sublime reading of Luiz Eca's "The Dolphin", plus "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes", "Joy Spring", "A Time For Love", and "Close Enough For Love". CD

Benny Golson's one of those players who never lets us down – and here, into his 80th year in on the planet, the man's still burning strongly and soulfully! The set's got a very solid, put-together sort of sound – the quality that's always made us seek out Golson albums of any vintage, amazed at the depth of feeling and richness of creativity that Benny can bring to even a simple sort of date. This one's definitely a cut above, though – self-produced by Golson, and featuring a lineup with Eddie Henderson on trumpet and flugelhorn, Steve Davis on trombone, Mike LeDonne on piano, Buster Williams on bass, and Carl Allen on drums – all rock-solid players who help Benny flesh out his sound beautifully here, reaching some nice sensitive points at times, then sliding back into warmly soulful grooves. Jackie & RoyHigh Standards ... LP
Concord, 1982. Near Mint- ... $3.99
These guys never miss! For years, we'd always passed up the later work of Jackie & Roy – thinking, in our elitist minds, that only their early work was worth merit. But this session from 1982 proves how wrong we were – as it's a stellar batch of small group tracks – sung in the same sweet mode as their best 50s work! The group's a nice one – with some great vibes by Paul Johnson – and the style has Jackie singing some songs in the lead, others in duet with Roy, and still others in a wonderful wordless mode that we really love. Titles include "Loving You", "I Watch You Sleep", "Too Marvelous For Words", "Am I Blue", "Bidin My Time", "Mine", and "Joy Spring". LP, Vinyl record album

Paul McCartneyMcCartney (2CD special edition) (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
MPL/Hear Music/Concord (Japan), 1970. Used 2 CDs ... $33.99 39.99
The incredible solo debut of Paul McCartney – and a record that already leaps ahead from The Beatles in so many amazing ways! There's an up-close, intimate vibe to some of these songs that's really amazing – a sense of happiness that Paul never seemed to have in the Beatles' later years – mixed with some other witty twists and turns that expose a side of his songwriting that would only blossom even more in years to come! McCartney handles all instruments and vocals – but Linda also joins in on harmonies – and it's that sense of harmony between the two of them that really guides the record's spirit. Titles include "Maybe I'm Amazed", "Man We Was Lonely", "The Lovely Linda", "Momma Miss America", "Every Night", "Valentines Day", "Hot As Sun/Glasses", "Junk", and "Singalong Junk". CD

Paul McCartneyMcCartney II (2CD special edition) ... CD
MPL/Concord, 1980. Used 2 CDs ... $29.99
Paul McCartney has left Wings behind for this record – but in their place he's come up with a wonderful new approach – serving up all the instruments himself, as he did on the first album titled Paul McCartney – but also using more electronics than before, which makes for some wonderfully moody moments! The songwriting is great – every bit as strong as the 70s years, without some of Paul's later 80s fluff – and the change in instrumentation really makes for some beautifully haunting moments. The set includes "Waterfalls" – one of our favorite tracks ever by Paul – and other titles include the hit "Coming Up", the groovy "Temporary Secretary", and the tracks "Darkroom", "Summer Day's Song", "On The Way", "Nobody Knows", "Bogey Music", and "Frozen Jap". Two generations of Hammond heroes – teaming up here in an old school-styled set! We'll admit that we're a bit more partial to Jack's organ than Joey's, but DeFrancesco's still pretty great – and the pair play together as if on some old twin-Hammond date from the 60s on Prestige (although thinking back, the label really didn't ever cut sessions like that!) Players include Paul Bollenback and John Hart on guitars, Jerry Weldon on tenor, and Andrew Beals on alto – and titles include "Pork Chops & Pasta", "Please Send Me Someone To Love", "Black Jack", "Funk Pie", "Rock Candy", "Yesterdays", and "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World". ✨✧ Carmen McRaeFine & Mellow – Live At Birdland West ... LP
Concord, 1988. Near Mint- ... $4.99
A mighty nice setting for Carmen McRae, and a bit different than usual too – especially given that the backing group is a pretty soulful tenor/organ combo! Jack McDuff handles the Hammond, and Red Holloway plays both tenor and alto, with some nice comping from Phil Upchurch on guitar in the group – and this mix of hip players gives the set a more soulful swing than some other McRae dates from the time – and from other times as well – almost going for the feel of some of the 60s Etta Jones sets on Prestige. Titles include "Black & Blue", "My Handy Man Ain't Handy No More", "Fine & Mellow", "What Is This Thing Called Love", "What Can I Say After I Say I'm Sorry", and "One More Chance". Marcus MillerRenaissance ... CD
Concord, 2012. Used ... $4.99
Excellent work from Marcus Miller – the kind of soul-drenched, bass-led set that's made him a favorite for years! There's a tightness here that almost takes us back to the feel of a Stanley Clarke set from the 70s – a right on the money groove you'll hear right from the start – with more than enough bite in the basslines, and a sound that's never too smooth to make the album lose its groove. The set features guest work from Sean Jones on trumpet – plus a bit of vocals from Dr John, Gretchen Parlatto, and Ruben Blades – but overall, Miller's clearly the star attraction here, as you'll hear on cuts that include "Detroit", "Redemption", "Slippin Into Darkness", "Jekyll & Hude", "Revelation", and a great cover of Weldon Irvine's "Mr Clean". Flora Purim & AirtoHumble People ... LP
Concord, 1985. Near Mint- ... $13.99
Almost a return to basics for Airto and Flora – singing here in more of a jazzy fusion style than on some of her late 70s R&B sessions. The Concord production almost gives the album the feel of a Tania Maria set for the label – using core jazzy backings, plus some expanded instrumentation – at one minute sounding stripped down and jazzy, but at others going for some more contemporary soul styles. There's enough good tunes on here to make the album worthwhile, and help you get past the few clunkers that sort of get in the way – and titles include "Nvula Leza Kia/Humbiumbi", "Jogral", "Bad Jive", "20 Years Blue", "Shoulder", and "New Flora". Poncho's still cooking nice and hard on congas – and he's got a tight band backing him up on this feisty session of heavy Latin grooves.
