✨✧ Art BlakeyKeystone 3 ... CD
Concord, 1982. Used ... $7.99
Long, lean live energy from Art Blakey and a well-remembered version of The Jazz Messengers – a group that includes both Branford Marsalis on alto and Wynton Marsalis on trumpet – plus great tenor from Bill Pierce as well! The vibe is nicely different than the 60s years of the group – and even different than some of the late 70s incarnations too – and the longer, open performances really give all the players a great chance to show off their youthful energy – including Donald Brown on piano and Charles Fambrough on bass. The whole lineup is proof once again that just about anyone Blakey picks turns out to be a legend in their own right – and titles include "Fuller Love", "In Walked Bud", "Waterfalls", and "A La Mode". Butcher Brown#KingButch ... CD
Concord, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Fantastically jamming genius from Butcher Brown – a contemporary funk combo, but one with a sound that owes nothing to anyone else! These guys aren't retro, or any kind of jamband offshoot – and instead, they rework vintage instrumentation with a very fresh feel of their own – a groove that's been well-nurtured on previous releases, and which really explodes here – heavy with Fender Rhodes, bass, guitar, and drums – and getting occasional vocals touches from Tennishu, who also blows trumpet and tenor! There's maybe a bit more vocals than before, but they're right on the money, and perfect for the sound – on cuts that include "1992", "Broad Rock", "Cabbage", "#KingButch", "Gum In My Mouth", "Hopscotch", "Tidal Wave", "For The City", "IDK", and "Love Lock". Monterey Jazz Festival/Concord, 1963. Used ... $4.99
Miles Davis and his Quartet doing their thing at the 1963 Monterey Jazz Fest – a previously unreleased set that finds Miles & Co in peak live form! The group isn't out to set the world on fire with this performance, but they're certainly pushing the form and structure of modern jazz in a way that must have been pretty exciting for a festival audience in '63. The group is George Coleman on tenor, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass and Tony Williams on drums, with plenty sweet solos among them. Greatness! Titles include longish takes on "Autumn Leaves", "So What", "Stella By Starlight" and "Walkin'", plus the intro "Waiting For Miles" and the closer "The Theme", CD

Nubya GarciaSource ... CD
Concord, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic full-length debut from Nubya Garcia – a tenor saxophonist who's been making big waves on the London scene in recent work – and who, like most of her contemporaries in that city, is determined to push jazz into new dimensions that will keep the artform growing and alive for decades to come! At the core is Nubya's quartet – an excellent group that features Joe Armon-Jones on piano and Wurlitzer, Daniel Casimir on bass, and Sam Jones on drums – all working with energy that's boundless, and always has us running to the notes to figure out of there's more people working than just those four! And in most cases, that's not what's going on – save for a few spots that feature guest trumpet from Ms Maurice, and the occasional vocal appearance – hardly distractions from the amazing spirit and energy of the quartet at the core. Really wonderful work from a player who is rising up to be a key part of the next generation of jazz – on titles that include "Together Is A Beautiful Place To Be", "Source", "The Message Continues", "Pace", "La Cumbia Me Esta Llmando", and "Boundless Beings". Scott HamiltonScott Hamilton – Is A Good Wind Who Is Blowing Us No Ill ... LP
Concord, 1977. Near Mint- ... $18.99
One of the first statements of greatness from tenorist Scott Hamilton – a young player who emerged in the late 70s, but one with a definite old school sound! Scott blows here with a wind that's plenty good – very deep-toned, and with a raspy, honest quality that almost takes us back to Ben Webster in the 50s – quite a surprise for the Concord Records sound. The record's got a very well-matched group, too – Nat Pierce on piano, Monty Budwig on bass, Bill Berry on trumpet, and Jake Hanna on drums – all of whom give Hamilton's tenor plenty of space to dominate the session. Titles include "Stuffy", "Indiana", "Blue Room", "Sometimes I'm Happy", "Ill Wind", and "Broadway". LP, Vinyl record album

Quincy Jones & Bill CosbyNew Mixes Vol 1 ... CD
Concord, 1969. Used ... $2.99
A classic funky soundtrack – remixed! In a surprisingly great move, Concord Records follows their re-release of the soundtrack to the original Bill Cosby Show of the late 60s with remixes of the Quincy Jones tunes by a variety of current producers! The work really steps off from the original sound of the show's music – using the best bits and quirky standout moments of the tracks, but crafting them into grooves that fit the specific moods of eacy of the producers. This is way more than a simple remix project, and is probably better stated by the "new mixes" title – with tracks that include "Where's Eddie" by Echo, "Jimmy's Theme" by Mario Caldato Jr, "Pelando" by Los Amigos Invisibles, "Along Came Mr Nobody" by Ursula 1000, "Matthew Herbert's Technically Amateur Mix" by Herbert, "Valeurs Personelles" by Cornershop, and "Miss Leslie" by Soulive. ✨✧ Quincy Jones & Bill CosbyOriginal Jam Sessions 1969 ... CD
Concord, 1969. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Stone funky work from the late 60s – a landmark batch of tracks by Quincy Jones – originally recorded for the soundtrack of the first Bill Cosby show, and issued here to the public for the first time ever! The show's famous theme "Hikky-Burr" is a well-known groover with a sinister snapping edge that sums up all the best of Quincy's funky jazz soundtrack work in the 60s – and the rest of the tracks on the set follow in a blend of California soul jazz modes that's mighty mighty nice! Players on the tunes include Milt Jackson, Monty Alexander, Joe Sample, Eddie Harris, Ray Brown, and Paul Humphrey – and the tracks have a loose, improvised feel that's a nice contrast from a lot of Quincy's tighter soundtrack work. Along with 2 different versions of "Hikky-Burr" (one with vocal by Cosby, one without), the set also features tracks that include "Toe Jam", "Jive Den", "Monty Is That You", and "Eubie Walkin" – plus a loosely disguised version of "Listen Here", and a take on "Oh Happy Day". Great stuff – and wonderful to finally have out on CD! CD

Valerie JuneOrder Of Time ... CD
Concord, 2017. Used ... $9.99
Valerie June's been bubbling under for almost a decade – recording work with other artists, doing a variety of projects, and finally getting her chance to shine in the spotlight with her previous debut – yet it may well be this well-crafted second album that finally puts the singer over the top! Valerie's completely her own woman here – not beholden to any sort of easy tags or cliches – including the "rootsy soul" or "folksy diva" tags that we heard batted around before – and instead, almost inventing her own genre for the record – which has a vibe that makes us guess that it's going to be the start of a huge legacy of fame to come for June. Her voice is timeless, the instrumentation is nicely understated, and the production is very easygoing – yet the whole thing comes across with a crispily compelling sound that could appeal to both hipsters and their more mainstream friends. That might sound like a dig, but it's not – just our way of illustrating the soon-to-be universal appeal of the singer! Titles include "The Front Door", "Astral Plane", "Long Lonely Road", "Just IN Time", "Slip Slide On By", "Two Hearts", and "Got Soul". CD
(Cover appears to be signed by the artist.)

Concord, 2013. Used ... $4.99
A really compelling mix of folk roots and deeper soul – served up here by one of the most unique artists we've heard in years! Valerie June is really carving out some unique territory here – singing and playing guitar at a level that feels rooted in Appalachia, but also sometimes stepping into some headier sounds that are more soul or funk-based as well – a really surprising brew that comes off surprisingly well throughout! Valerie's getting production help from Kevin Augunas and Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys – both of whom play and sing on the record too – along with some guest organ work from Booker T. Titles include "Wanna Be On Your Mind", "Pushin Against A Stone", "Trials Troubles Tribulations", "Twined & Twisted", "The Hour", "Somebody To Love", and "Workin Woman Blues". CD

Concord/Reel To Real, 1987. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
An overlooked moment of genius from Canadian bassist Neil Swainson – maybe the only album of his we've seen as a leader, and a tremendous showcase for the talents of Joe Henderson on tenor and Woody Shaw on trumpet! The album's a beautiful burner – filled with original songs by Neil, and handled by the group with some of the soulful flow you'd find on the best Woody Shaw albums for Muse Records in the 70s – a mode that's very much out of time, especially as the whole thing was issued on the Concord label, which isn't usually such a strong showcase for material as soulful and expressive as this! The rest of the combo features Jerry Fuller on drums and Gary Williamson on piano – and titles include "Don't Hurt Yourself", "49th Parallel", "Port Of Spain", "On The Lam", "Labyrinth", and "Southern Exposure". Concord, 1982. New Copy 2CD ... $17.99 19.99
A heady dose of work from George Thorogood and The Destroyers – a set that captures them at the height of their early powers, with a searing sound that really comes through in the extended space of this full concert performance! George and the group were the kind that didn't need major radio or glossy promotion to get them going at the start – as they were a hard-working, ass-kicking band that began in the bars, and kept that energy strong as they hit larger venues like this – very much tied to the roots of the music that inspired them, but also with Thorogood emerging with the strong charisma of a rocker, more than just another blues rock guitarist. Titles include "Madison Blues", "The Sky Is Crying", "Bad To The Bone", "Move It On Over", "Reelin & Rockin", "Ride On Josephine", "House Of Blue Lights", "Cocaine Blues", "One Way Ticket", "Bottom Of The Sea", "It Wasn't Me", "Night Time", and "One Bourbon One Scotch One Beer". Monterey Jazz Festival/Concord, 1972. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A rare live date from Art Blakey – recorded right around the same time as his Giants Of Jazz concert album for Atlantic in 1972! Like that set, this one features Blakey working with a group of bigger stars than his usual Jazz Messengers – a compelling assemblage of players that includes Thelonious Monk on piano, Roy Eldridge and Clark Terry on trumpets, Kai Winding on trombone, and Sonny Stitt on both alto and tenor sax! The feel is less Blakey-like than some of Art's other material – and more in a classic bop-styled approach overall – but that's no complaint, given the quality of the work, and the strength of the solo players. Titles include "Blue N Boogie", "Round Midnight", "Stardust", "Lover Man", "Perdido", "The Man I Love", and "Night In Tunisia". CD

✨✧ Joey DeFrancescoOrganic Vibes ... CD
Concord, 2006. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums we've ever heard from organist Joey DeFrancesco – a record that burns with strongly soulful work by Bobby Hutcherson! Hutcherson really helps Joey really flesh out his standard Hammond groove for the set – pushing the organ into broad new colors on both the ballads and uptempo numbers – and almost creating a sound that brings back echoes of some of the Johnny Hammond Smith and Lem Winchester collaborations back in the early 60s! George Coleman plays tenor solos on 2 tracks in the set, but the real sax credit here goes go Ron Blake – who plays tenor, soprano, and flute throughout – sparking the most driving tracks with a searing edge that's really great. DeFrancesco takes off on some Larry Young-ish riffs at times, but keeps things in check overall – and titles include a great remake of Hutcherson's classic "Little B's Poem", plus the originals "Down The Hatch", "Colleen", and "The Tackle" – and a nice take on "Somewhere In The Night", one of those tracks that never lets us down! The Concord label gave guitarist Herb Ellis some of his greatest moments of the 70s – like this early cooker with guitarist Joe Pass – recorded live at the Concord Jazz Festival that gave the label its name! The 1973 performance has both players really opening up – never overwhelming each other, but driving with energy right from the start, then spacing out their own territory strongly on the solos. Backing is from bassist Ray Brown and drummer Jake Hanna – but the record leaves lots of room for guitar throughout – with tones and moments from both players that are a real surprise. Titles include "Seven Come Eleven", "Prelude To A Kiss", "Perdido", "Easy Living", and "Concord Blues". CD

✨✧ Frank Sinatra & Antonio Carlos JobimSinatra/Jobim – The Complete Reprise Recordings (Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim/Sinatra & Company) ... CD
Concord, 1967/1969. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The full recordings of a surprisingly wonderful match – the vocals of Frank Sinatra and the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim! The first half of the CD features the full album Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim – a beautiful little album that shows a whole new side of Sinatra! Frank's a bit late on the bossa game – but the record's a wonderfully gentle batch of bossa nova tunes, performed with musical and occasional vocal accompaniment by Jobim, and larger orchestral backings by Claus Ogerman. Far more than a gimmicky fake bossa album – this is a wonderful set of tracks that show that Sinatra could still hit a gentle ballad without going as over the top as he did on some of his other Reprise work. Jobim's talent is very respected – and the record is a true blending of musical styles, in a way that does justice to both artists equally. Titles include "Change Partners", "Dindi", "Meditation", "How Insensitive", and "I Concentrate On You". Next is material from side one of Sinatra & Company – a 1969 album that reunited Frank and Jobim! Arrangements are by Deodato, and the tracks have the floating easy groove of Sinatra's album with Jobim from earlier years – and there's some great numbers like "Drinking Water", "Don't Ever Go Away", "One Note Samba", and "This Happy Madness" that feature English language versions of bossa favorites. CD also features "Off Key" and "Bonita", also cut at the 1969 sessions! CD

Concord/Craft, 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 3LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic collection of postwar gospel – one that really keeps the spirit of the "jukebox" in the title! The tunes here are all upbeat, and often share a lot with R&B material of the 50s – especially the vocal group numbers, which often echo more secular modes of early doo wop, but rise the lyrics towards more heavenly aims – while often imbuing the tunes with lots of earthy energy! All the tracks here are from the Vee Jay and Specialty Records labels – and in the case of Vee Jay especially, the well-chosen selection of tracks provides a long-overdue focus to tunes that have mostly been reissued for the spiritual market, and haven't gotten the kind of exposure in the soul scene that they've needed over the years! This collection really corrects that – handled by the excellent Craft division of Concord who've been giving us some great Stax reissues – and the package is overflowing with rare singles, a total of 40 tracks in all – accompanied by great notes in a really well-done package. Titles include "Let Jesus Lead You" by The Detroiters, "Let Me Ride" by The Staple Singers, "Ananais" by The Chosen Gospel Singers, "Wade In The Water" by Harmonizing Four, "This May Be The Last Time" by The Original Five Blind Boys, "Just Another Day" by Soul Stirrers, "I Am So Glad" by Patterson Singers, "I Dreamed Heaven Was Like This" by Highway QCs, "Move Upstairs" by The Gable-Airs, "Angels Watching Over Me" by The Detroiters, "The Lord's Prayer" by Swan Silvertones, "Sinner Run To Jesus (take 1)" by Soul Stirrers, and "People Don't Sing Like They Used To Sing" by Original Blind Boys. Overlooked genius from Art Blakey's 80s years – a time when he was recording for a variety of smaller labels, but turning out work that was every bit as fresh and vibrant as his sides from the 60s and 70s! As always with the Jazz Messengers, the group's filled with up-and-coming jazz talents that really make the record great – trumpet from Terence Blanchard, tenor from Jean Toussaint, alto from Donald Harrison, piano from Mulgrew Miller, and bass from Lonnie Plaxico – all players who leave their own imprint strongly on the record, yet still fall into line with the core groove supplied by Blakey's drums. Titles include Blanchard's "Oh By The Way", Harrison's "Controversy", and Miller's "Falafel" – all wonderfully soulful numbers – plus a "Ballad Medley", and a version of "Tenderly". CD

Concord/King (Japan), 1984. Used ... Out Of Stock
Guitarist Jim Hall is a player who's always realized he sounds best in a small, intimate setting – whether in his 50s trio recordings with Jimmy Giuffre, or his 60s classics with Bill Hall, or his 70s experiments with bassist Ron Carter – and this live date for Concord really revives the latter, by bringing together two of the most sensitive string players in jazz for a really wonderful performance! The liveness of the setting – an introductory announcement, and some occasional applause – sometimes reminds us that the pair aren't off in a small room, creating magic on their own – but the overall focus of the material and the players' very careful sound still create this deeply personal sound that really holds us breathless. Some tracks are nice and long – and titles include "Telephone", "Indian Summer", "Chorale & Dance", "Candlelight", and "Two's Blues". CD

Milestone/Concord, 1971. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An essential record from Gary Bartz – one of two albums he cut with Andy Bey, and the killer group he was calling his NTU Troup! Andy's vocals are incredible – light years ahead of anything he did with his sisters, and similar to those he laid down on his own solo album for Atlantic, and on Blue Note sides with Horace Silver – a righteous mix of jazz and soul, with a burning intensity that makes the political themes of the tracks come out strongly. The album includes one of Andy's all time classics – the original 7 minute version of "Celestial Blues", plus the fantastically grooving "Uhuru Sasa" – as well as the cuts "The Planets", and "Blue (A Folk Tale)". And Gary Bartz is pretty great too – dropping in these angular reed lines that really give the record an edge, and which sound totally great next to Bey's vocals! LP, Vinyl record album

Brilliant work by Steve Reich – featuring two of his best early pieces! "Violin Phase" takes up all of side one – and features a solo performance by Paul Zukofsky that's a perfect exploration of Reich's concept of phase shift. "It's Gonna Rain" is on side two – and the track is an incredible tape loop piece that starts with the words of a gospel preacher, then takes a snippet ("it's gonna rain") and repeats it over and over itself, endlessly looping, and messing with the words and tones as it goes in and out of phase. Incredible stuff – and far more revolutionary than a lot of Reich's later work! LP, Vinyl record album

Gregory's already been a hell of a singer for years – we've loved him since the very first note he ever recorded – but with a record like this, he continues to rise into the stratosphere of a rare few singers who can transcend both their roots and their genres – with the kind of trans-generational music that will have folks listening to this set for decades – and around the world, in so many different ways! The All Rise in the title is very fitting – as this is definitely a set to lift up the world – with titles that include "Mr Holland", "Concorde", "Dad Gone Thing", "Revival", "Merchants Of Paradise", "Long List Of Troubles", "Everything You Touch Is Gold", "Merry Go Round", "Thank You", and "Phoenix". ✨✧ VariousBreakaway – The Songs Of Jackie DeShannon 1961 to 1967 ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Breathtaking 60s pop, soul & rock tunes penned by Jackie DeShannon – a wide range of glorious singles from Irma Thomas, The Fleetwoods, Helen Shapiro, Barbara Lewis, Duane Eddy, The Concords, The Byrds, Peggy March and many more! Jackie's is an amazing story – starting out as a TV friendly hillbilly & rockabilly pop singer in the late 50s, and going on the be a hugely successful songwriter in the 60s for a wildly diverse pool of singers – from folk pop, to stomping pulpy rock of the Lee Hazlewood and Jack Nitzsche school (the latter a frequent collaborator), to r&b fueled vocal tunes, Jackie wrote all kinds of great stuff, and kept recording to boot. This set couldn't be more appealing, and it's a lovely tribute to a great talent! 27 tracks: the fiery "Break-A-Way" by Irma Thomas, "Woe Is Me" by Helen Shapiro, "Guitar Child" by Duane Eddy & The Rebelettes, "Thank You Darlin'" by Rick Nelson, "Don't Doubt Yourself Babe" by The Byrds, "Stop That Girl" by Barbara Lewis, "I Remember The Girl" by The Bandits, "Only You Can Free My Mind" (previously unreleased demo) by Jackie DeShannon and much more.
