Ernestine AndersonLive From Concord To London ... LP
Concord, 1978. Very Good ... $4.99
70s live material from singer Ernestine Anderson – half from the Concord Jazz Festival, half from a London performance at Ronnie Scott's – hence the title! The first half has this swinging jazz festival vibe – Ernestine really reaching out to win over the crowd with her charms, and backing by a core trio with Hank Jones on piano, occasionally expanded into a bigger ensemble. The London tracks are a bit more intimate, and feature a trio with John Horler on piano – and some especially great phrasing from Anderson. Titles include "Stormy Monday", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "I Don't Get Around Much Anymore", "Love For Sale", and a long "Ellington Medley". LP, Vinyl record album

Rob McConnell & The Boss BrassConcord Jazz Heritage Series ... CD
Concord, Late 80s/Early 90s. Used ... $2.99
A collection of Concord Records work from Rob McConnell's Boss Brass ensemble – a hip little big band first formed in the 60s, and one that was still grooving nicely well on into later decades! The style here is somewhat similar to Rob's famous albums on MPS – a modern big band approach that's often a bit groovy, but also a bit warmer than some of his contemporaries in the 70s. The approach is never too sweet, and nicely free from traditional cliches of the genre – and in addition to Rob's own work on valve trombone, tracks also include performances by Moe Koffman on alto sax, Guido Basso on flugelhorn, and Mel Torme on vocals. Titles include "Strike Up The Band", "4 BC", "Stella By Starlight", "Lil Darlin", and "Them There Eyes". CD

Cannonball AdderleyCannonball Adderley Sextet In New York (Keepnews collection) ... CD
Riverside/Concord, 1962. Used ... $5.99
Rock-solid live material from the classic Cannonball Adderley Sextet – a combo who could usually groove even better on a concert date then they could in the studio! The album's one of a number of key live sides from Cannon in the 60s – and although it pre-dates his work on Capitol, it's done in a similar spacious mode – with plenty of longish tracks that build upon the core groove set down by Joe Zawinul's piano, Sam Jones' bass, and Louis Hayes' drums – a perfect backdrop for the creative and complicated solos of Cannon on alto, Nat Adderley on cornet, and Yusef Lateef on tenor, flute, and oboe! The date was recorded live at the Village Vanguard in 1962 – and titles include "Gemini", "Planet Earth", "Dizzy's Business", "Syn-anthesia", "Scotch & Water", and "Cannon's Theme". CD

Ernestine AndersonBig City ... CD
Concord, 1983. Used ... $13.99
Ernestine Anderson at the height of her powers – caught during a very successful run at Concord Records, where she was easily one of the hippest things going down at the time! The group here is a trio, and very tight – Hank Jones on piano, Monty Budwig on bass, and Jeff Hamilton on drums – all shifting easily to fit the mood and personal demeanor of Anderson's performance, which is a fair bit more dynamic than other jazz singers of the period. In a way, the record's got a similar feel to Lorez Alexandria's albums from the time – hip soul jazz vocals at its best, with just the right twists, turns, and rhythmic impulses to keep things interesting – but not enough to goof things up too much! Titles include "Big City", "Welcome To The Club", "All Blues", "All I Need Is You", "Spring Is Here", and "I'll Never Pass This Way Again". CD

Ray Brown Trio With Ralph MooreMoore Makes 4 ... CD
Concord, 1990. Used ... $5.99
We're not normally great fans of the Ray Brown Trio, but this album's a corker – thanks to some great tenor work by Ralph Moore! Moore's a the height of his powers here – blowing with an easy soulfulness that recalls the classic late 50s work of Hank Mobley. His presence on the set really opens things up – and althoguh Brown's trio is more than fine, and Gene Harris' piano is always a treat, it's really Moore's tenor work that makes this album a gem. Titles are mostly standards, but done with imagination – and titles include "The Champ", "Polka Dots & Moonbeams", "Like Someone In Love", "Quasimoto", "Ralph's Boogie", and "SOS". CD

Gary BurtonDeparture ... CD
Concord, 1997. Used ... $3.99
A laidback quintet date from Gary Burton – one that almost returns us to the warm hues of his best early work in the 60s! The record's awash in Burton's famous tone on the vibes – a very color-sensitive approach to the instrument that resonates nicely amidst a setting that includes piano from Fred Hersch, guitar from John Scofield, bass from John Patitucci, and drums from Peter Erskine. The tracks are all taken at a mellow or midtempo pace, and Burton's never too arch-modern in his approach – almost soulfully swinging at times, on tracks that include "Poinciana", "Depk", "Tenderly", "If I Were A Bell", "For All We Know", and "Japanese Waltz". Butcher Brown#KingButch ... CD
Concord, 2020. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Fantastically jamming genius from Butcher Brown – a contemporary funk combo, but one with a sound that owes nothing to anyone else! These guys aren't retro, or any kind of jamband offshoot – and instead, they rework vintage instrumentation with a very fresh feel of their own – a groove that's been well-nurtured on previous releases, and which really explodes here – heavy with Fender Rhodes, bass, guitar, and drums – and getting occasional vocals touches from Tennishu, who also blows trumpet and tenor! There's maybe a bit more vocals than before, but they're right on the money, and perfect for the sound – on cuts that include "1992", "Broad Rock", "Cabbage", "#KingButch", "Gum In My Mouth", "Hopscotch", "Tidal Wave", "For The City", "IDK", and "Love Lock". A sweetly stepping session of bluesy jazz vocals from Jeannie Cheatham – outwardly a trad-oriented record, but done here with some nice light west coast touches that really capture the best of the Concord groove of the early 80s. There's a gentle swing to the tracks that reminds us of some of the Ernestine Anderson Concord work from the period, and Jeannie plays a bit of piano as well as sings – and is joined by Jimmy on bass trombone, Red Callender on bass and tuba, and Charles McPherson on alto sax. Kurt EllingNightmoves ... CD
Concord, 2007. Used ... $6.99
The first non-Blue Note album from Kurt Elling – and a great fresh start for one of the greatest jazz singers working today! Kurt hasn't sounded this fluid or confident in years – and while we expected that Concord Records might have put him in a slicker, smoother setting, the record's actually nicely stripped-down – mostly recorded with small combo acoustic jazz instrumentation, plus some very slight strings on just a few tracks. Elling's got a sense of vocal presence that we'd accord to a rare few – Jon Hendricks, Michael Franks, and Mark Murphy – and like those singers, he's got a wonderful way of putting himself on the line, but without going too far – never hitting emotions or notes that are too easy, and always reminding us that he's a jazz singer first and foremost. Titles include "Nightmoves", "Tight", "Where Are You My Love", "I Like The Sunrise", "A New Body & Soul", "The Waking", and "The Sleepers". CD

The title's no joke here, as Jon Faddis uses the record to pay tribute to a rich legacy of trumpeters before him – players like Dizzy Gillespie, Thad Jones, and Roy Eldridge – who he references here in both style and use of compositions. Titles include "Little Jazz", "Instigator", "Night In Tunisia", "Things To Come", "Lil Darlin", and "A Child Is Born". CD

A fantastic full-length debut from Nubya Garcia – a tenor saxophonist who's been making big waves on the London scene in recent work – and who, like most of her contemporaries in that city, is determined to push jazz into new dimensions that will keep the artform growing and alive for decades to come! At the core is Nubya's quartet – an excellent group that features Joe Armon-Jones on piano and Wurlitzer, Daniel Casimir on bass, and Sam Jones on drums – all working with energy that's boundless, and always has us running to the notes to figure out of there's more people working than just those four! And in most cases, that's not what's going on – save for a few spots that feature guest trumpet from Ms Maurice, and the occasional vocal appearance – hardly distractions from the amazing spirit and energy of the quartet at the core. Really wonderful work from a player who is rising up to be a key part of the next generation of jazz – on titles that include "Together Is A Beautiful Place To Be", "Source", "The Message Continues", "Pace", "La Cumbia Me Esta Llmando", and "Boundless Beings". A really tremendous take on the Source album from saxophonist Nubya Garcia – one that has new versions of the tunes served up by some of his hippest contemporaries – at a level that brings together his current work on the London scene with a global underground that has found a way to embrace a whole new generation in jazz! There's plenty of touches here that maybe echo the London at the start of this century – when the 4Hero generation were first beginning to mix jazz instrumentation and more cosmic levels of production – but the songs also feature some key American underground elements too, which makes for a wonderful sense of variety throughout the set – but not in the jagged style that usually comes with a remix album. Players include Joe Armon Jones on piano and keyboards, Sam Jones on drums, and Nubia on tenor sax – and the record features vocal appearances from Akenya, La Perla, and Sheila Maurice-Grey. Jazzmeia HornLove & Liberation ... CD
Concord, 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
We really loved Jazzmeia Horn on her debut, but this time around she really knocks it out of the park – to a point where we're ready to list her among our top few favorite jazz vocalists – a short list that includes Betty Carter, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Shirley Horn! We're not easy with praise like that – but in this case, it's very well-deserved – as the record is one of those jazz vocal sets that comes along once in a blue moon – all original material by the singer, handled with a soulful, soaring style that's made even better by the small combo on the set – a great group that features Victor Gould on piano, Stacy Dillard on tenor, Josh Evans on trumpet, Jamison Ross on drums, and Ben Williams on bass. Horn's got an ability to both deliver a straight lyric with just the right mix of soul and emotion, and take off on jazz-styled flights as well – and her sense of inflection is amazing – at once very old school, like few "jazz" singers can do these days – but also instantly personal and contemporary. Titles include "Free Your Mind", "Out The Window", "Only You", "When I Say", "Legs & Arms", "Reflections Of My Heart", and "I Thought About You". CD

A wonderful selection of work from the great Little Richard – a 64 track package that not only includes loads of gems from his early years on Specialty Records, but also includes a lot of near-forgotten material from his great run on Vee Jay as well! The Specialty tracks are the stuff of legend – material that set a whole new standard not just for R&B, but for rock and roll, and coming soul as well – as Richard draws on roots from gospel and jazz, and fuses them into a rawer, tighter groove that's got plenty of New Orleans soul elements in the piano and rhythms – all to make things take off like a rocket right from the start. And even if you think you know the hits, there's plenty more here to discover too – loads of lost gems from these years that really make the collection great. Next up are the recordings for Vee Jay Records in Chicago – material that represents an early comeback for Little Richard – one of many over the years, and the one that's probably closest to the sound that first got him started! Although issued on Vee Jay in the 60s, the record's got less of a soul groove than you'd expect – and features Richard working on the west coast in a rough-edged R&B mode that's quite different than the smoother shift that was going down with most of Vee Jay's Chicago crew at the time. Most tracks have some super-sharp guitar – often played by a young Jimi Hendrix, as well as Johnny Guitar Watson and Black Arthur – and as usual, Richard's on the piano on most numbers, really wailing on the keys at a level that matches the pyrotechnics of his vocals! Package comes with a bonus 16 page booklet – and titles that include "Goin Home Tomorrow", "Without Love", "Talkin Bout Soul", "I Don't Know What You've Got But It's Got Me", "Oooh My Soul", "Jenny Jenny", "The Girl Can't Help It", "Hey Hey Hey Hey", "Rip It Up", "Directly From My Heart", "Memories Are Made Of This", "Groovy Little Suzy", and lots lots more! ✨✧ Thelonious MonkThelonious Monk Orchestra At Town Hall (Keepnews collection – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Riverside/Concord, 1959. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A unique large group effort from Thelonious Monk – but one that bristles with all the angular energy of his other great work for Riverside! The group here is a tentet – filled with excellent players who include Donald Byrd, Phil Woods, Pepper Adams, Eddie Bert, Robert Northern, and Charlie Rouse – all supported by rhythm from the team of Sam Jones on bass and Art Taylor on drums, possibly one of the key factors for the success of the record! The album's comprised of Monk classics like "Little Rootie Tootie", "Thelonious", "Friday The 13th", "Off Minor", "Crepuscule with Nellie" and "Monk's Mood" – all arranged by Hall Overton, a little-remembered modernist from the 50s, but one with a keen dedication towards pushing new sounds from old formats! Overton really keeps the spirit of Monk's music intact here – penning charts that allow for plenty of solo space and the kind of cross-trading lines you'd hear in some of Monk's best multi-horn small group sides for Riverside! CD features 4 bonus tracks! CD

✨✧ Esperanza SpaldingSongwrights Apothecary Lab ... CD
Concord, 2021. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
One of the hippest records we've ever heard from Esperanza Spalding – a set that almost feels as if she's stepping back into some of the more experimental, individual qualities that made her so different at the start! There's definitely some appealing, catchy songs here – but the record is one to definitely be taken as a whole – this really lovely tapestry of voice and music that shimmers and glistens throughout – tunes that work together as a single suite that really keeps the album sounding fantastic all the way through, in this blend of jazz and soul that comes not just from Esperanza's vocals and work on bass, but also from the piano of Leo Genovese, who co-wrote most of the material on the album. Wayne Shorter plays on one track, the record features guest vocals from Corey King and Ganavya, and the set features 13 tracks, all numerically titled "Formwela". CD

Concord, 2010. Used ... $7.99
A soaring stormer from the Spanish Harlem Orchestra – a contemporary group, but one who plays with some really classic Latin jazz modes! The group's always been great, but this may well be their best album to date – full of rich tones, bold colors, and tight rhythms that keep things lively throughout – all recorded in a no-nonsense way that reminds us of those excellent Latin jazz sessions we used to love from the Cubop label. Pianist Oscar Hernandez is at the head of a lineup that features two trumpets, two trombones, sax, flute, and plenty of percussion – on cuts that include "Linda", "Nuestra Cancion", "Si Me Quieres Te Quiero", "Son De Corazon", "La Salsa Dura", "La Fiesta Empezo", and "El Negro Tiene Tumbao". Neil Swainson Quintet with Joe Henderson & Woody Shaw49th Parallel ... CD
Concord/Reel To Real, 1987. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
An overlooked moment of genius from Canadian bassist Neil Swainson – maybe the only album of his we've seen as a leader, and a tremendous showcase for the talents of Joe Henderson on tenor and Woody Shaw on trumpet! The album's a beautiful burner – filled with original songs by Neil, and handled by the group with some of the soulful flow you'd find on the best Woody Shaw albums for Muse Records in the 70s – a mode that's very much out of time, especially as the whole thing was issued on the Concord label, which isn't usually such a strong showcase for material as soulful and expressive as this! The rest of the combo features Jerry Fuller on drums and Gary Williamson on piano – and titles include "Don't Hurt Yourself", "49th Parallel", "Port Of Spain", "On The Lam", "Labyrinth", and "Southern Exposure". George Thorogood & The DestroyersLive In Boston 1982 – The Complete Concert ... CD
Concord, 1982. New Copy 2CD ... $17.99 19.99
A heady dose of work from George Thorogood and The Destroyers – a set that captures them at the height of their early powers, with a searing sound that really comes through in the extended space of this full concert performance! George and the group were the kind that didn't need major radio or glossy promotion to get them going at the start – as they were a hard-working, ass-kicking band that began in the bars, and kept that energy strong as they hit larger venues like this – very much tied to the roots of the music that inspired them, but also with Thorogood emerging with the strong charisma of a rocker, more than just another blues rock guitarist. Titles include "Madison Blues", "The Sky Is Crying", "Bad To The Bone", "Move It On Over", "Reelin & Rockin", "Ride On Josephine", "House Of Blue Lights", "Cocaine Blues", "One Way Ticket", "Bottom Of The Sea", "It Wasn't Me", "Night Time", and "One Bourbon One Scotch One Beer". Mel Torme & George ShearingVintage Year ... LP
Concord, 1987. Near Mint- ... $5.99
A key pairing of vocalist Mel Torme and pianist George Shearing – two aging jazz artists who really helped re-ignite each others' careers in the 80s! The format here takes Torme back to the best years of his jazz roots – and features spare backing from Shearing's trio, at a level that's intimate, but never too sleepy or prone with cliche. Shearing's touch on the keys is wonderfully sensitive – never just standard backing to a singer – and in a way, he brings out a new sense of depth in Torme's vocals, one that never showed itself so strongly, or so personally in the past. And best of all, at the time of this recording, the duo haven't yet lapsed into the cliches that would later mar their pairing – and instead really work together beautifully in a fresh sense of discovery and joy in each others' company. Titles include "The Midnight Sun", "Someday I'll Find You", "Whisper Not/Love Me Or Leave Me", "Since I Fell For You", "Out Of This World", and "Little Man You've Got The Blues". Lizz WrightFreedom & Surrender ... CD
Concord, 2015. Used ... $6.99
Lizz Wright just keeps on growing and growing as a singer – past the jazz and soul of her roots, to a space that easily has the singer reaching out to a much greater range of ears, but all while keeping true to her style! There's definitely a jazzy heart at the core of the record – and most instrumentation is from a small combo – but the expression in Wright's vocals moves into very personal territory that's very much her own – feeling, but never overdone – catchy, but never cloying – and set up in a balance that maintains all the class and poise we've always loved in the singer. Highlights include a duet with Gregory Porter on "Right Where You Are", and a nice cover of Nick Drake's "River Man" – and other titles include "Here & Now", "Surrender", "Blessed The Brave", "Freedom", "The Game", "Lean In", "Somewhere Down The Mystic", and "Real Life Painting". Stax/Concord, Early 70s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A gospel singer, but with a great ear for soul – the mighty Rance Allen was one of the key figures to bridge the spiritual and secular worlds in the 70s! This excellent set features Rance Allen gems from his early 70s years at Stax Records – tunes that burn with all of the deep soul styles of other work on the Memphis label, but which also seem to get an extra push deep down inside, thanks to Allen's spiritual leanings. Most cuts have excellent piano and keyboards alongside the vocals – and titles include "Let The Music Get Down In Your Soul", "Ring My Bell", "Up Above My Head", "Lying On The Truth", "Joy", "What Is This", "I Belong To You", "Ain't No Need Of Crying", "That Will Be Good Enough For Me", "What A Day", and "The Painter". ✨✧ Art BlakeyIn This Korner (with bonus track) ... CD
Concord, 1978. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Art Blakey at the Keystone Korner – really rattling the rafters with a great lineup that includes Bobby Watson on alto sax, David Schnitter on tenor, and Valery Ponomarev on trumpet! Although the Shorter/Morgan lineup is always hailed as one of Blakey's best, we're also pretty partial to this great late 70s stretch of The Jazz Messengers – as it shows some wonderful early flowering of Watson's alto, and his songwriting abilities; Ponomarev's well-blown trumpet lines; and Schnitter's crisp, sharp lines on tenor – always carved out with a great depth of feeling. Add to the mix some great piano from James Williams, and bass from Dennis Irwin, and you've got a great lineup next to Blakey's drums – all working together in a rough-edged, hard soul space on tracks that include "Pamela", "Unlimited", "Dark Side Light Side", "Blues For Two", and "In This Korner". CD also features the bonus track "1977 AD". CD

Long, lean live energy from Art Blakey and a well-remembered version of The Jazz Messengers – a group that includes both Branford Marsalis on alto and Wynton Marsalis on trumpet – plus great tenor from Bill Pierce as well! The vibe is nicely different than the 60s years of the group – and even different than some of the late 70s incarnations too – and the longer, open performances really give all the players a great chance to show off their youthful energy – including Donald Brown on piano and Charles Fambrough on bass. The whole lineup is proof once again that just about anyone Blakey picks turns out to be a legend in their own right – and titles include "Fuller Love", "In Walked Bud", "Waterfalls", and "A La Mode". Never-heard work by Ray Charles – a surprisingly great batch of tracks presented here for the first time – most recorded in the 80s, with work from the 70s and early 90s too! There's a nicely unified feel to the record – Ray's strong vocals really holding things together, and an instrumental approach that follows well from some of the Tangerine label styles of the early 70s – kind of a leaner take on the southern-inflected modes that Charles pushed strongly once he got his own label – free of any hoke, or any attempts at over-commercialization, possibly because the music was never polished up too strongly at the time. Titles include "Love's Gonna Bite You Back", "Wheel Of Fortune", "It Hurts To Be In Love", "She's Gone", "A Little Bitty Tear", "Isn't It Wonderful", "There'll Be Some Changes Made", and "I'm Gonna Keep On Singin". ✨✧ Kurt EllingDedicated To You – Kurt Elling Sings The Music Of Coltrane & Hartman ... CD
Concord, 2009. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful tribute to the historic pairing of John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman – delivered here by one of our favorite jazz singers working today! The album's way more than just a simple rehash of a classic – as Kurt Elling expands upon the Coltrane/Hartman vibe tremendously, taking the music into even loftier territory with his own wonderful vocals, and creative presentation of the music that includes a few medley moments, and some great spoken bits to link the whole thing together! Musical arrangements are by Laurence Hobgood, who's been with Elling for years – and Hobgood really stretches out with his own energy here, to break the set past any easy cliches, and make it a really Elling-centrist effort that stands as one of Kurt's best records in years. The whole thing was recorded live, and titles include "Say It", "They Say It's Wonderful", "It's Easy To Remember", "Dedicated To You", "All Or Nothing At All", "You Are Too Beautiful", and a medley of "What's New/Lush Life/Autumn Serenade". Concord, 1981. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the best later moments from the great Stan Getz – a set we might even place on the same level as his 60s work for Verve – and certainly at the same par as his records in the 70s for Columbia! Yet this set is quite different than that latter batch – as it has Getz really going back to basics – hitting an open, flowing vibe that shows all the best elements he picked up from 60s changes – including bossa, traces of Coltrane, and more – but delivered with a wonderfully understated style throughout. The tracks are long, and have a magnificent flow – and Getz works with a great quartet that includes Lou Levy on piano, Monty Budwig on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums. Titles include a sublime reading of Luiz Eca's "The Dolphin", plus "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes", "Joy Spring", "A Time For Love", and "Close Enough For Love". CD

But this session from 1982 proves how wrong we were – as it's a stellar batch of small group tracks – sung in the same sweet mode as their best 50s work! The group's a nice one – with some great vibes by Paul Johnson – and the style has Jackie singing some songs in the lead, others in duet with Roy, and still others in a wonderful wordless mode that we really love. Milestone/Concord, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest Joe Henderson albums of the 70s – a suite of tracks dedicated to the four elements – and served up with some great accompaniment from Alice Coltrane! The style here is a wonderful mix of Coltrane's spirituality and Henderson's down-to-earth soulfulness – in a style that recalls some of the best moments on Coltrane's sublime Ptah The El Daoud album – a set in which Henderson's tenor was a key part. At times, Joe blows with a bit of Coltrane-like searching – but at others, he's bringing up more of a rhythmic pulse that really gives Alice a great focus – using her piano, harp, and harmonium alongside bass by Charlie Haden, violin from Michael White, and percussion from Ndugu Chancler and Baba Daru Oshu. Titles are named after the four elements – "Fire", "Air", "Water", and "Earth". LP, Vinyl record album
