Ernestine AndersonLive From Concord To London ... CD
Concord, 1978. Used ... $14.99
70s live material from singer Ernestine Anderson – half from the Concord Jazz Festival, half from a London performance at Ronnie Scott's – hence the title! The first half has this swinging jazz festival vibe – Ernestine really reaching out to win over the crowd with her charms, and backing by a core trio with Hank Jones on piano, occasionally expanded into a bigger ensemble. The London tracks are a bit more intimate, and feature a trio with John Horler on piano – and some especially great phrasing from Anderson. Titles include "Stormy Monday", "Days Of Wine & Roses", "I Don't Get Around Much Anymore", "Love For Sale", and a long "Ellington Medley". CD

Machito & His Afro Cuban OrchestraVacation At The Concord ... LP
Coral, 1958. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A great document of the crossover between the New York Latin scene and the Catskills – the upstate resort community that was as important to the Latin groups as the uptown clubs! Like many groups of the period, Machito's found a heck of a lot of work in the Catskills during the 50s – most notably at the Concord Resort, paid tribute to by this set – which includes photos of famous Concord staffers that include swimming instructor Buster Crabbe and golf pro Jimmy Demarest! But apart from that gimmicky approach, the album's actually a strong one for Machito – showing the kind of grooves that helped his 50s group cross over big – a mix of mambo and early cha cha tracks that include "Patricia", "Guaglione", "Torero", "Cha Cha Cha Loco", "Cotillon Mambo", and "Mambo La Concord". Toshiko AkiyoshiFinesse ... CD
Concord, 1978. Used ... $14.99
A wonderfully intimate set from pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi – quite different than her bigger band records of the 70s, but equally great in its own way! The album's a great throwback to the earliest days of Akiyoshi on record – as it has the pianist really opening up in a trio setting, but with even more confidence and imagination than in the 50s and 60s – no Bud Powell burning here, but some really beautiful, lyrical passages that really leave us breathless – and almost bring into sharper focus some of the ideas she'd explored in her big band. Backing is by Monty Budwig on bass and Jake Hanna on drums – and titles include "Warning Success May Be Hazardous To Your Health", "American Ballad", "Solvejg's Song", "You Go To My Head", and "Count Your Blessings". Ray Barretto & New World SpiritAncestral Messages ... CD
Concord, 1992/1993. Used ... $9.99
Ancestral Messages is a bold, proud record that really lives up to its title – a batch of tunes that has Ray leading a strong combo with Ray Vega on trumpet and Jay Rodriguez on tenor and flute – both tightly woven into a strong-voiced frontline that gives the record a tremendous amount of power. Alongside Ray's work on percussion the set also features drums, guiro, bass, and keyboards – the last of which are sometimes strongly electric, occasionally with that thinner mode that was used heavily at the time of the date. But that quality is more than made up for in the acoustic elements of the songs – which burst out with a quality that's quite different than some of Ray's salsa work of the decade before. Titles include "Song For Chano", "New World Spirit", "Beautiful Love", "Killer Joe", "Aqua Blue", "Gabriela", and "My Latin New York". CD
(Out of print. One track is highlighted on the tray card, but against the black bakground it's quite subtle.)

Kenny BarronLive At Maybeck Recital Hall Volume 10 ... CD
Concord, 1990. Used ... $4.99
The Maybeck solo series produced plenty of greatness when it was going on – and one of the greatest moments was this sweet solo set from Kenny Barron! Barron's one of those players we never get tired of – and while we love him in group and trio settings, he's equally magical here working by himself – opening up on these long, lyrical numbers that have a really evocative feel – beautiful runs up and down the keyboard, but in ways that are extremely thoughtful and well-paced – and not just an unbridled display of his talents. There's a sense of soul to the set that never lets up – and titles include "Bud Like", "Witchcraft", "Sunshower", "And Then Again", "Skylark", and "Spring Is Here". CD

Art BlakeyKeystone 3 ... CD
Concord, 1982. Used ... $6.99
Long, lean live energy from Art Blakey and a well-remembered version of The Jazz Messengers – a group that includes both Branford Marsalis on alto and Wynton Marsalis on trumpet – plus great tenor from Bill Pierce as well! The vibe is nicely different than the 60s years of the group – and even different than some of the late 70s incarnations too – and the longer, open performances really give all the players a great chance to show off their youthful energy – including Donald Brown on piano and Charles Fambrough on bass. The whole lineup is proof once again that just about anyone Blakey picks turns out to be a legend in their own right – and titles include "Fuller Love", "In Walked Bud", "Waterfalls", and "A La Mode". Concord, 1983. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A live set that follows the great format first set out by the trio of guitarists Charlie Byrd, Barney Kessel, and Herb Ellis – a pretty airy approach to jazz guitar swinging that also features a bit of bass from Joe Byrd and some drums from Chuck Redd! As before, the approach seems to work best on older swing-styled numbers – letting one guitar play rhythm while another solos strongly – on titles that include "Where Or When", "New Orleans", "Change Partners", "Opus One", "Get Happy", and "Danielle". Ray CharlesModern Sounds In Country & Western Music – Vols 1 & 2 ... CD
ABC/Concord, 1962. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Brilliant work throughout – both of Ray Charles' classic country albums on a single CD package! Volume one is the stuff of legends – and what seemed a silly idea at the time was true proof of Ray's genius – the most successful album of his career and a bona-fide number one hit that rode the charts for years and years! Ray's voice works perfectly with the material, and thanks to soulful arrangements by Gil Fuller, Marty Paich, and Gerald Wilson, the whole thing comes off to perfection. Titles include "You Don't Know Me", "I Can't Stop Lovin You", "Careless Love", "You Win Again", and "Worried Mind". Volume 2 is the second installment of one of Ray's greatest albums – and a landmark in the genre of country soul! As the title implies, Ray's singing a host of tunes best known from the country side of the spectrum – but he's working here with arrangements by LA jazzers Marty Paich and Gerald Wilson, to completely re-cast the tunes into the "modern sounds" mode promised in the title. The result is wonderful – a style that gave Ray's career a whole new boost, and a genre that was a perfect foil for his rich bluesy mode of singing. Titles include "No Letter Today", "Take These Chains From My Heart", "Teardrops In My Heart", "Making Believe", and "Hang Your Head In Shame". CD

Rosemary ClooneyRosie Sings Bing ... LP
Concord, 1978. Near Mint- ... $9.99
The title here shouldn't be Rosie Sings Bing, but Rosie Swings Bing – because on this late 70s session, Clooney does a great job of updating older Crosby standards – taking them into much hipper small combo jazz territory, and really shaking them free of some of their over-remembered cliches! Don't get us wrong, because we've got nothing against Der Bingle – and we certainly love his duets with Clooney from the 50s – but this album's a whole new thing entirely, and is really the proper sort of tribute to a singer – one that can help his genius live on for a whole new generation! Backings here are by a small jazz group that includes Nat Pierce on piano, Scott Hamilton on tenor, and Cal Collins on guitar – and titles include "Blue Skies", "But Beautiful", "Where The Blue Of The Night", "I Surrender Dear", "It's Easy To Remember", and "I Wished On The Moon". Joey DeFrancescoOrganic Vibes ... CD
Concord, 2006. Used ... $5.99
One of the greatest albums we've ever heard from organist Joey DeFrancesco – a record that burns with strongly soulful work by Bobby Hutcherson! Hutcherson really helps Joey really flesh out his standard Hammond groove for the set – pushing the organ into broad new colors on both the ballads and uptempo numbers – and almost creating a sound that brings back echoes of some of the Johnny Hammond Smith and Lem Winchester collaborations back in the early 60s! George Coleman plays tenor solos on 2 tracks in the set, but the real sax credit here goes go Ron Blake – who plays tenor, soprano, and flute throughout – sparking the most driving tracks with a searing edge that's really great. DeFrancesco takes off on some Larry Young-ish riffs at times, but keeps things in check overall – and titles include a great remake of Hutcherson's classic "Little B's Poem", plus the originals "Down The Hatch", "Colleen", and "The Tackle" – and a nice take on "Somewhere In The Night", one of those tracks that never lets us down! One of the first statements of greatness from tenorist Scott Hamilton – a young player who emerged in the late 70s, but one with a definite old school sound! Scott blows here with a wind that's plenty good – very deep-toned, and with a raspy, honest quality that almost takes us back to Ben Webster in the 50s – quite a surprise for the Concord Records sound. The record's got a very well-matched group, too – Nat Pierce on piano, Monty Budwig on bass, Bill Berry on trumpet, and Jake Hanna on drums – all of whom give Hamilton's tenor plenty of space to dominate the session. The Heath Brothers groove is nicely expanded by a set of added horns – all of whom bring a nice sense of fullness to the tracks, in a way that recalls some of Jimmy Heath's best arranging styles from years back! Jimmy's in the frontline on tenor and soprano sax, joined by Percy Heath on acoustic bass and cello, and Albert Heath on drums and percussion – and the rest of the combo features piano by Jeb Patton, trombone from Benny Powell, and 5 other brass players who deepen the tones and colors of the tunes quite nicely. There's a great choice of songs here too – a fair bit of Heath-penned tracks that show the thoughtful writing of Jimmy and his brothers – on tracks that include "A Harmonic Future", "I'm Lost", "13th House", "Move To The Groove", and "Three At Last" – plus a great take on Kenny Dorham's "None Shall Wander". Joe Henderson with Alice ColtraneElements (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Milestone/Concord, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest Joe Henderson albums of the 70s – a suite of tracks dedicated to the four elements – and served up with some great accompaniment from Alice Coltrane! The style here is a wonderful mix of Coltrane's spirituality and Henderson's down-to-earth soulfulness – in a style that recalls some of the best moments on Coltrane's sublime Ptah The El Daoud album – a set in which Henderson's tenor was a key part. At times, Joe blows with a bit of Coltrane-like searching – but at others, he's bringing up more of a rhythmic pulse that really gives Alice a great focus – using her piano, harp, and harmonium alongside bass by Charlie Haden, violin from Michael White, and percussion from Ndugu Chancler and Baba Daru Oshu. Titles are named after the four elements – "Fire", "Air", "Water", and "Earth". LP, Vinyl record album

Marquis HillWay We Play ... CD
Concord, 2016. Used ... $7.99
Perhaps the best to date from trumpeter Marquis Hill – still a young player, but he plays with a depth of Chicago soul jazz history in his musical DNA, even as he brings in profoundly modern touches! Marquis was splitting his time between Chicago and NYC by the time The Way We Play was recorded, but he's really showing a deep love for Chicago here, from the cover art to the choice of material, in which he's invigorating classic numbers with fresh, youthful urgency. Core players include Makaya McCraven on drums, Christian McBride on alto, Justin "Justefan" Thomas on vibes and Joshua Ramos on bass – with guest vocalists Christie Dashiell and Meagan McNeal, poet Harold Green III, percussionist Jan Pastor and trombonist Vincent Gardner. Includes "The Way We Play/Minority", "Moon Rays", "Polka Dots And Moonbeams", a truly fresh, slowed down and moodier take on the Herbie Hancock classic "Maiden Voyage" with some emotive wordless vocals, "Fly Little Bird Fly", "Beep Durple", "Straight, No Chaser", "My Foolish Heart" and "Smile". Quincy Jones & Bill CosbyOriginal Jam Sessions 1969 ... CD
Concord, 1969. Used ... $6.99
Stone funky work from the late 60s – a landmark batch of tracks by Quincy Jones – originally recorded for the soundtrack of the first Bill Cosby show, and issued here to the public for the first time ever! The show's famous theme "Hikky-Burr" is a well-known groover with a sinister snapping edge that sums up all the best of Quincy's funky jazz soundtrack work in the 60s – and the rest of the tracks on the set follow in a blend of California soul jazz modes that's mighty mighty nice! Players on the tunes include Milt Jackson, Monty Alexander, Joe Sample, Eddie Harris, Ray Brown, and Paul Humphrey – and the tracks have a loose, improvised feel that's a nice contrast from a lot of Quincy's tighter soundtrack work. Along with 2 different versions of "Hikky-Burr" (one with vocal by Cosby, one without), the set also features tracks that include "Toe Jam", "Jive Den", "Monty Is That You", and "Eubie Walkin" – plus a loosely disguised version of "Listen Here", and a take on "Oh Happy Day". ✨✧ Carmen McRaeFine & Mellow – Live At Birdland West ... LP
Concord, 1988. Sealed ... $4.99
A mighty nice setting for Carmen McRae, and a bit different than usual too – especially given that the backing group is a pretty soulful tenor/organ combo! Jack McDuff handles the Hammond, and Red Holloway plays both tenor and alto, with some nice comping from Phil Upchurch on guitar in the group – and this mix of hip players gives the set a more soulful swing than some other McRae dates from the time – and from other times as well – almost going for the feel of some of the 60s Etta Jones sets on Prestige. Titles include "Black & Blue", "My Handy Man Ain't Handy No More", "Fine & Mellow", "What Is This Thing Called Love", "What Can I Say After I Say I'm Sorry", and "One More Chance". Thelonious MonkThelonious Monk Orchestra At Town Hall ... CD
Riverside/Concord, 1959. Used ... $5.99
A unique large group effort from Thelonious Monk – but one that bristles with all the angular energy of his other great work for Riverside! The group here is a tentet – filled with excellent players who include Donald Byrd, Phil Woods, Pepper Adams, Eddie Bert, Robert Northern, and Charlie Rouse – all supported by rhythm from the team of Sam Jones on bass and Art Taylor on drums, possibly one of the key factors for the success of the record! The album's comprised of Monk classics like "Little Rootie Tootie", "Thelonious", "Friday The 13th", "Off Minor", "Crepuscule with Nellie" and "Monk's Mood" – all arranged by Hall Overton, a little-remembered modernist from the 50s, but one with a keen dedication towards pushing new sounds from old formats! Overton really keeps the spirit of Monk's music intact here – penning charts that allow for plenty of solo space and the kind of cross-trading lines you'd hear in some of Monk's best multi-horn small group sides for Riverside! CD features 2 bonus tracks! CD

Riverside/Concord, 1957. Used 2 CDs ... $6.99
A massively expanded package of music – filled with previously unreleased gems! The 2CD set features a landmark collaboration between John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk – two generations of jazz modern, working here to create some really incredible music! Other players vary from track to track – and include Gigi Gryce on alto sax, Ray Copeland on trumpet, Coleman Hawkins on additional tenor, Wilbur Ware on bass, and Art Blakey on drums. Titles wonderful versions of "Ruby My Dear", "Trinkle Tinkle", "Nutty", "Well You Needn't", "Crepescule With Nellie" and "Monk's Mood" – plus some alternate versions, false starts, and more – all wrapped up with notes and reflections from original producer Orrin Keepnews. Jamison RossAll For One ... CD
Concord, 2018. New Copy ... $9.99 15.99
Jamison Ross is a drummer at heart, but he's also turning into a hell of a singer who seems ready to help the music of New Orleans find a great new space of its own – as he works here in a sweet small combo set that mixes his voice with grooves that draw together strong currents of classic funk, soul, and jazz! Ross takes up a few classics on the set, but he also sounds even better on his own music – these new songs that bring a sense of personality that we didn't hear on his previous record, while still balancing things out with those funkier moments we know in his music too. Titles include "Unspoken", "Mellow Good Time", "Everybody's Cryin Mercy", "Away", "Tears & Questions", "Safe In The Arms Of Love", and "Keep On". CD

✨✧ Esperanza Spalding12 Little Spells (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Concord, 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
12 sublime spells from Esperanza Spaulding – with 4 more spells added to the mix for the physical release of the album! The record's got Esperanza really blowing us away – not content to just stay in the safer territory that she virtually invented a few years back, and which could sustain her entire career – and instead coming across with a mode that's more complicated, more edgey, and more message-oriented than ever before – all awash with a pastiche of sonic colors that's echoed by the image on the cover! Spaulding's vocals just seem to get better and better as the years go on – but she also leads strongly with her basslines on most numbers too – while the production really lets some of the more cosmic-styled elements flow around the edges. Titles include "12 Little Spells", "To Tide Us Over", "Til The Next Full", "Thang", "You Have To Dance", "Now Know", "All Limbs Are", "Readying To Rise", and "Dancing The Animal". ✨✧ Cal TjaderLa Onda Va Bien ... CD
Concord, 1980. Used ... $7.99
A killer set by Cal Tader – every bit as great as some of his best work from earlier years! The album was recorded with a small tight combo – one that features the great Mark Levine on both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes, plus flute and percussion by Roger Glenn, and congas and percussion by Poncho Sanchez. The whole thing glides along in a nice blend of electric and acoustic jamming – similar to Cal's best work of the late 60s, and with a stripped down groove that has a lot more fire than the average Concord release! In our opinion, Carmen always sounds best when she's singing with a small jazz combo backing her up – which is why we dig this tasty set from the early 80s, recorded with a great group led by Cal! The album's got some nice Latin touches – thanks to piano by Mark Levin, and conga work by Poncho Sanchez – and tunes on the record are a mix of standards and a few more interesting numbers, all delivered with a nice light groove. Titles include "Besame Mucho", "Heat Wave", "All In Love Is Fair", "Evil Ways", "Love", "The Visit", and "Speak Low". LP, Vinyl record album

Monterey Jazz Festival/Concord, 1971. Used ... $5.99
A warm, wonderful set by Sarah Vaughan – and a later one, closing the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1971 – released for the first time ever! Sarah is backed for most of the set by the trio of Billy Mays on piano, Bob Magnusson on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums – with Sarah managing to both portray heavy emotion and mood and also an easygoing, playful charm – joking with the audience and obviously having a wonderful time. Very nice! Includes the Norman Granz intro, plus "I Remember You", "The Lamp Is Low", "'Round Midnight", "There Will Never Be Another You", "And I Love Him", "Scattin' The Blues", and "Tenderly" – plus a 14 plus minute jam with the Jazz At The Philharmonic All-Stars – Bill Harris, Roy Eldridge, Clark Terry, Eddie Lockjaw Davis, Benny Carter and others! Lizz WrightGrace ... CD
Concord, 2017. Used ... $4.99
Lizz Wright teams up with producer Joe Henry on a tribute to the grace of the American south – on a record that may well be her strongest to date! The set's got a warm core that really suits Wright's vocals – and the strength of her presentation here is so rich, she hardly needs any other instrumentation at all – a factor that Henry clearly acknowledges, as he uses the rootsy guitar and Hammond to just shade things in around the edges, while mostly letting Lizz shine center stage on her almost-timeless presentation of the lyrics! Bassist David Piltch may well be the secret hero of the record – as his acoustic instrument really matches the depth of Wright, and does a great job of shifting with each tune – guiding the proceedings, but never overwhelming them at all. Titles include remakes of "Southern Nights", "Stars Fell On Alabama", "Wash Me Clean", "What Would I Do Without You", and "Grace" – plus the original "All the Way Here". CD

VariousJesus Rocked The Jukebox – Small Group Black Gospel 1951 to 1965 ... CD
Concord/Craft, 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $16.99 24.99
A fantastic collection of postwar gospel – one that really keeps the spirit of the "jukebox" in the title! The tunes here are all upbeat, and often share a lot with R&B material of the 50s – especially the vocal group numbers, which often echo more secular modes of early doo wop, but rise the lyrics towards more heavenly aims – while often imbuing the tunes with lots of earthy energy! All the tracks here are from the Vee Jay and Specialty Records labels – and in the case of Vee Jay especially, the well-chosen selection of tracks provides a long-overdue focus to tunes that have mostly been reissued for the spiritual market, and haven't gotten the kind of exposure in the soul scene that they've needed over the years! This collection really corrects that – handled by the excellent Craft division of Concord who've been giving us some great Stax reissues – and the package is overflowing with rare singles, a total of 40 tracks in all – accompanied by great notes in a really well-done package. Titles include "Let Jesus Lead You" by The Detroiters, "Let Me Ride" by The Staple Singers, "Ananais" by The Chosen Gospel Singers, "Wade In The Water" by Harmonizing Four, "This May Be The Last Time" by The Original Five Blind Boys, "Just Another Day" by Soul Stirrers, "I Am So Glad" by Patterson Singers, "I Dreamed Heaven Was Like This" by Highway QCs, "Move Upstairs" by The Gable-Airs, "Angels Watching Over Me" by The Detroiters, "The Lord's Prayer" by Swan Silvertones, "Sinner Run To Jesus (take 1)" by Soul Stirrers, and "People Don't Sing Like They Used To Sing" by Original Blind Boys.
