✨✧ Comet Is ComingTrust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery ... LP
Impulse, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic blend of spiritual jazz styles and electronic elements – served up here by the trio of drummer Betamax, keyboardist Danalogue, and saxophonist King Shabaka – the last of whom you might recognize as Shabaka Hutchings from a host of other hip projects on the contemporary London scene! Shabaka's work on tenor and bass clarinet really gives the record an earthy, organic core – which seems to let the keyboards really soar off into space, often with the sort of vibe that you'd guess from the group's name and the cover image on the record – in a wide flurry of live and amplified performance elements! At some level, the trio is almost London's answer to some of the jazz-meets-studio work from Chicago's International Anthem label – and like some of the groups who record for that imprint, these guys are all strong jazz musicians at the core – but performing at a level that's very beyond the ordinary. Titles include "Birth Of Creation", "Summon The Fire", "Blood Of The Past", "Astral Flying", "Super Zodiac", "The Universe Wakes Up", and "Timewave Zero". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Comet Is ComingAfterlife ... LP
Impulse, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A brilliant blast from The Comet Is Coming – their second album on Impulse in less than a year – and it's as exciting as anything they've done so far! Their core vibe of mixing spiritual jazz with electronic experimentation is here in full force, but they take it new directions. While the trio carries the influences from 70s spacey fusion influences and modern London jazz on the other, it always feels fully unique and of their own invention. Part of what's so exciting is they can strip things down to minimalist vibe of melodic sax, spare drums and bubbling electronics to far-reaching jazz funk from one track to the next – this is trio with range! Poet Joshua Idehen delivers a righteous vocal on the opener "All That Matters Is The Moments" that sets the stage for the soaring ride that follows, including "The Softness Of The Present", "The Afterlife", "Lifeforce Part I", "Lifeforce Part II" and "The Seven Planetary Heavens". ✨✧ Comet Is ComingHyper Dimensional Expansion Beam ... LP
Impulse, 2022. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Comet Is Coming are one of those groups who are almost a genre unto themselves – certainly part of the rich criss-crossing of styles that has been taking place on the London scene of the past decade or so – but also a trio who've found a way to forge forward and hold the world at bay with a record like this! At the core, the approach is simple – tremendous tenor work from Shabaka Hutchings, drums from Betamax, and keyboards from Danalogue – the latter two of whom are equally important as producers, in the way they take the live performance at the core, and work it into so many other shifting shapes and sounds! Hutchings' solos are always kept mostly intact, which makes for a beating soul to the record, and a nice link to previous generations of jazz – on titles that include "Pyramids", "Tokyo Nights", "Technicolour", "Code", "Lucid Dreamer", "Atomic Wave Dance", "Mystik", and "The Hammer". ESP, 1973. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Sun Ra's most striking albums of the 70s – a live session recorded in honor of the passing of the comet Kohoutek, and featuring some of the most cosmic work the Arkestra recorded at the time! Ra himself is on synthesizer, playing with a heavily electronic sound – and really wailing in a heavily avant mode at many points in the recordings. The rest of the group is equally free – not the soulful soaring ensemble from Space Is The Place, but a forcefully explosive group, ready to burst into flames in the wake of the comet! Titles include "Astro Black", "Unknown Kohoutek", "Discipline", "Outer Space EM", and "Space Is The Place". CD

✨✧ Graeme MillerComet In Moominland ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the rarest work ever from composer Graeme Miller – tracks done for continued episodes of the Moomin animated series he scored with Steve Shill, but which were unused at the time, due to a shift in presentation of the series! The music here as all the charm of the other Moomins releases, and is maybe even more personal too – an odd mix of spare themes and light, lovely melodies – created by Miller on unusual instruments that include ocarina, kalimba, squeak box, shakers, and a whole host of other homemade instruments and lo-fi techniques! If you've seen the animation, you'll know how much these sounds match the warmth and intimacy of those images – on titles that include "Raft Journey", "The Cave", "Climbing The Lonely Mountain", "Indigenous Woodland Bird", "The Tornado", and "Locusts". MelanieCri D'Amour ... LP
Comet (France), 2022. Sealed ... Just Sold Out!
Not the Melanie of famous folk rock fame – but instead a cool contemporary artist from France, and one who's got this wonderfully laidback way of putting over a tune! Melanie often speaks as much as she sings – a bit like Jane Birkin or Claudette Longet – and she works with these mellow backings that are mostly electric, but handled in a nicely subtle way – gentle currents of funk, loosely tinkling keyboards, and often this subtle sonic palette that really shades things in beautifully next to the vocals! There's a very timeless vibe to the record, and titles include "Le Pornographe", "La Belle Histoire", "Folk Silencio", "C'Est Dans L'Air", "L'Alpha Beta", and "It's Not Too Late". Ebo TaylorTwer Nyame ... LP
Philips/Comet (France), Mid 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $30.99 33.99
An early gem from Ghana legend Ebo Taylor – a smoking little set with a really hypnotic feel overall! The tracks here are all nice and long – and build energy with kind of a minimal layering of sound – an approach that's different than some of the longer Nigerian jams you might know from the time, but with a style that's equally compelling – especially give the great use of guitar and keyboards! These instruments are heard to best effect on the sublime "Peace On Earth" – a tune that features this wonderful other-worldly electric piano – ringing out with tones that are almost vibes-like at times, and which almost have a Sun Ra-ish sort of quality. Also great is "Atwer Abroba" – a tune with some funky horns riffing along with the tight percussion, and captivating vocal refrains over the top. The title cut, "Twer Nyame", has wonderfully chromatic guitars – really let loose, and allowed to build slowly – creating this warm electric energy on the tune! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ebo TaylorEbo Tayor & The Pelikans ... LP
Comet (France), Mid 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A vintage set from the great Ebo Talyor – an artist who's been recording new music in recent years, but who sounds even better here on one of his classics! Ebo's got a fair bit of jazz mixed in with his sound – a layering of flute, trombone, tenor, guitar, and keyboard parts with a strong sense of solo – a bit like South African jazz of the period, especially in the way the instruments really open up in the midtempo grooves! Rhythms are laidback, but still nicely present – not as speedy as Afro-Funk, but not much slower either – and there's also room for plenty of lyrics on the tracks, too – although it's the instrumental solos we think we like the best. Titles include "Reality", "If You Care", "Come Along", "Egya Edu", "Enye Wo Nyame Nko", and "Gyae Su Na Nkomo". LP, Vinyl record album

An album as lovely as its title, and John Fahey's 8th record – mostly solo guitar, but with guest drums and bass on 2 cuts – "March For Martin Luther King" and "Dance of The Inhabitants Of The Invisible City Of Bladensburg". The sound is extremely magical – introspective, yet far-seeing – with that fragile sense of being in the world that's made Fahey's work endure far longer than that of most of his contemporaries. Other titles include "Irish Setter", "Commemorative Transfiguration & Communion At Magruder Park", and "Lion". CD

Disques D'Esperance/Comet (France), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A soulful treasure from 70s France – funky fusion at its best, played by drummer Noel McGhie and his legendary Space Spies combo! The group features some sweet electric piano on all the grooves – really skipping out with a light touch that steps around McGhie's tight drum work nicely – while reeds and trumpet blow with a tone that's open and exploratory – never too "out", but reaching for the skies with a real sense of spirit! The tracks are all quite long, and have a quality that's really hard to describe – easily on a par with the best American indie soul jazz of the time, but with a flavor that's also all their own! Titles include "Trapeze", "Dancer", "Ubet", "Mademoiselle Tulloch", and "Foregone Desillusion". LP, Vinyl record album

An obscure Nigerian groover – but a set with a massive groove to rival the best classics of the 70s scene in Lagos! The cover bills the record as "super-feelings led by Segun Okeji" – and we've gotta say, that's a great way to put it – because there's a soulful undercurrent to the record that definitely has Segun feeling the groove – blowing tenor with a heady sound, over tightly-paced tunes that get going right from the start – mixing in some other great horns, organ, and really massive percussion! Each track takes up a full side of the record – in true Fela format – and titles include "I Like Woman" and "Afro Super-Feelings In Disco". LP, Vinyl record album

A late 60s bluesy-psych album by Outlaw Blues Band! The group's got equal parts funk and equal parts blues, and they play with kind of trippy approach to the music that's filled with lots of wry touches – both instrumentally and vocally – that keep things nice and lively! Breaking In brings the blues influences a bit more to the fore, and is more stripped down in instrumentation, but it's still a pretty tripped out set with some great drums, woozy organ and searing guitars. David FormanDavid Forman ... LP
Arista, 1976. Near Mint- ... $4.99
David Forman almost looks like a 70s-era Brian Eno on the cover – but he's got a completely different sound overall – an honest, earnest singer/songwriter mode, and one that's quite down to earth, especially given the album's presentation on Arista Records in 1976! Forman wrote most of the material himself, and plays piano, guitar, and sings with a very unusual style – almost like he's working the subtle emotions of the tunes with the freedom of a demo, even on some of the tracks that feature some added strings or horns. The former were handled by William S Fischer, with dark currents that really work beautifully with Forman's offbeat tunes – and the whole thing is one of those wonderfully weird major label albums from the 70s that got woefully overlooked at the time. Titles include "When The Comet Comes", "Winnsboro Louisiana", "Marriage Of Napoleon", "Seven Sisters", "If It Takes All Night", and "Endless Waters". LP, Vinyl record album

This thing's got to be seen to be believed – as it's got a spiral notebook containing 8 CDs, with a slipcase for a big book that features loads of photos, notes on the session, and voluminous liner notes commissioned for the package. ✨✧ Lorez Alexandria60s Pzazz Sessions – Didn't We/In A Different Bag ... CD
Connoisseur Collection (UK), Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 excellent albums from Lorez – very different than her earlier jazz work! Didn't We is an obscure set with a mix of jazz and pop tunes, and arrangements (mostly) by pianist Ronell Bright. Bright plays in the group backing Lorez, as does the great tenor player Teddy Edwards. The legendary Paul Gayten produced, and the track list includes "Play Me The Blues", "Comet In the Sky", "Psychedelic Bag", "Nonchalantly", "Talk About Cozy", and "Endless". In A Different Bag is a very nice album from Lorez – and one that's much more of a soul album than a jazz one! Lorez is singing in a deep deep style that's really nice, and which is hinted at, but never reached on other albums. Backings are by Jack Scott, and the legendary Paul Gayten produced the record with a nice live sound that was probably recorded in the studio with a small group present. Titles include "I'll Never Be Free", "Confessin The Blues", "I Don't Want To Hear It Anymore", "Vibrations", "I've Got A Right To Cry", and "Trust In Me". And if that's not enough, the CD includes two bonus tracks – "Santa Is Here" and "Help Me". CD

✨✧ Ralph BurnsFree Forms/Winter Sequences ... CD
Verve/Fresh Sound (Spain), 1946/1951/1954. Used ... Out Of Stock
2 very rare slices of work by arranger Ralph Burns – both of them unique! First up on the set is Free Forms, a modern jazz-meets-strings session that follows from Burns' exploratory "Introspection" title for the Jazz Scene collection (included here as a bonus track.) Ralph pens some inventive charts that utilize a 15 piece chamber orchestra as backdrops for his own bold lines on piano, as well as some key solo bits from Lee Konitz on half the tracks. Titles include "Places Please", "Cameo", "Lileth", "Spring Is", and "Someday Somewhere". The modern feel of that set is balanced by the more whimsical Winter Sequence – a 1954 record written by Leonard Feather, with 8 tracks named after each of Santa's reindeer (save for Rudolph.) The format's a lot less Christmasy than you'd expect – but there is a nice sort of Holiday bounce to the whole thing – a joyful and playful feel that's a nice contrast from some of Burns' more modern work. Players include Joe Wilder, Kai Winding, Herbie Mann, and Billy Bauer – and titles include "Donner", "Cupid", "Comet", "Vixen", and "Blitzen". CD

Matador, Late 1970s/Early 1980s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A hell of a package – two key albums from Gang Of Four, plus lots of other rare material from these crucial years! At the core of the package is the classic album Entertainment – one of the greatest debut albums of all time – a record that hit the world like a comet when it was released, and which will continue to burn brightly for many decades to come! There's few groups who get things so right as Gang Of Four on this set – balancing the sharp edges of UK punk with a deeper political sense – but one that puts its message across in these short, sharp, shocks that are often given an extra punch by some surprisingly strong basslines! Tracks include "Ether", "Natural's Not In It", "Not Great Men", "Damaged Goods", "Return The Gift", "Guns Before Butter", "Glass", and "Contract". Solid Gold is a stunning second set from the mighty Gang Of Four – and a record that's got all the power and politics of their famous Entertainment debut! The set's got some wonderfully heavy basslines amidst the scratchy guitar that makes the group so great – but nothing's too polished, certainly not as in their crossover club modes to come – and the call/response vocal style of Andy Gill and Jon King is tremendous – a very fresh way to deliver the message, and one that's still never been matched all these many years later. Titles include "Paralyzed", "What We All Want", "Why Theory", "If I Could Keep It For Myself", "Cheeseburger", "The Republic", "Outside The Trains Don't Run On Time", "In The Ditch", "A Hole In The Wallet", and "He'd Send In The Army". Next, you get an exclusive Singles album – the first-ever LP collection of all the early singles and b-sides – including tracks from the EP releases Yellow, Damaged Goods, and Another Day Another Dollar. Next is an another exclusive vinyl release – the 2LP set recorded Live At The American Indian Center 1980. Worm Discs (UK), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great little collection that seeks to put the Bristol scene on the map – and to show the kind of inventive jazz the city's been offering up in recent years! The compilers aim to demonstrate that Bristol has as many newly-creative acts as the sort that have been bubbling up in London on labels like Brownswood – and the range of material here really shows a similar way of blending newer ideas and older execution – especially strong in the rhythm department, and with an effortless mixing of acoustic and electric modes. If you've been digging sounds from Comet Is Coming, Nubya Garcia, and Joe Armon-Jones, this set is a great place to take that interest further – on work that includes "Bergson" and "Jabba" by Waldo's Gift, "3.3 Encke Ups" and "Sea Of Apathy & Indifference" by Run Logan Run, "Flump (Ishamel Ensemble rework)" and "Grook" by Snazzback, "Owl" by Lyrebird, and "Bourdain" by Alun Elliott Williams. A really great lineup of musicians from the London scene – coming together here in a mix of modes that's both electric and acoustic, jazz and more global-based – all with the far-reaching sounds you might expect from their previous work in groups like Collocutor or Comet Is Coming! There's a freshness here that's wonderful, right from the very first note – players with a jazz sensibility, but who've also drunk up all the criss-crossing modes that have been bubbling up in London in recent years – pushing past conventional rhythms and instrumental placements, and creating an intensity that takes their music to audiences who might never have listened to mainstream jazz! Players include Tamar Osborn on bass clarinet, flute, and soprano sax; Bex Burch on vibes, electronics, and percussion; Danalogue on Fender Rhodes and other keyboards; Al MacSween on prepared and conventional piano; and Sarathy Korwar on drums and tablas – and all the players seem to handle a wide variety of other instruments as well. Mercury, 1968. Very Good+ ... $19.99
Amazing soul from one of the greats of the 60s! This album was one of the first that Jerry cut for Mercury – where he'd begun working with the young team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff to completely rework the earlier sound he'd forged at Vee Jay Records. The album's still got Jerry singing in his wonderfully rich deep voice – hence the "iceman" in the title – but the songs have a bit more of a groove to them, with a soaring soul style that really lifts Jerry up, and pushes him onto a whole new generation of soul fans. The best proof of this are the hits "Hey Western Union Man" and "Never Give You Up" – but the whole album's great, and like most of Jerry's LPs, it's got many wonderful tunes hiding underneath the hits. Titles include "How Can I Get In Touch With You", "Can't Forget About You Baby", "Are You Happy", and "Go Away Find Yourself" – as well as other hits like "Lost" and "Only The Strong Survive". Jasual CazzMemory Guard ... LP
Chuwanaga (France), 2023. New Copy ... $27.99 32.99
A mighty nice trio, and one with a lot darker sound than you might expect from the "casual jazz" reference in the title! The group features keyboards, bass, and drums – all used in ways that draw on older fusion modes, but which have a more laidback, 21st Century vibe – an approach that lets the groove grow to find its flow, while things ring out in all these nicely spacious ways, then start getting funky! As the album moves on, it picks up a wonderfully soulful vibe – leaner than any classic representations of 70s keyboard funk, which makes for a fresh approach that's mighty nice – on titles that include "Liberty City", "Meches", "L'Arche", "Temple", "Double Comete", "Jungle Meat", and "Better Before". Rita LeeAtras Do Porto Tem Uma Cidade (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Philips/Polysom (Brazil), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $39.99 46.99 About May 15, 2024 (delayed)
A wild solo project from Rita Lee – done after the breakup of Os Mutantes, and offered up almost as some sort of commentary on mainstream rock in the 70s! There's a much more straightforward approach to the music here – a sometimes-glammy sound that's echoed by the band's space-style costumes and makeup – but there's also some weirdly old-style rock instrumentation too, almost like the way that an artist like Gary Glitter could fold the 50s and 70s together in his music, and come across making something very weird and new. Here, the keyboards are almost stronger than the guitars – and Rita herself plays moog, melotron, organ, and piano – on titles that include "Tem Uma Cidade", "Menino Bonito", "Mame Natureza", and "Eclipse Do Cometa". LP, Vinyl record album
(Nice heavy vinyl – with a bonus poster too!)

VariousNippon Girls Vol 2 – Japanese Pop, Beat, & Rock & Roll 1965 to 1970 ... CD
Big Beat (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Mad sounds from the late 60s world of Japanese pop – a mindblowing, ear-opening batch of singles we never would have gotten our hands on otherwise! The music here feels like sounds coming out of some backroom jukebox in a Nikkatsu "new action" film – or maybe the kind of offbeat pop that Quentin Tarantino might throw into a soundtrack – but there's also a much deeper range of sounds going on than you might expect, with wonderfully clever instrumentation, and lots of surprisingly heartfelt passages in the vocals! And sure, the language might be a barrier – but there's a really universal sense of appeal to this music – a variant of 60s soul and pop, focused through a different sort of lense – and the instrumentation alone is great – with wicked guitars, Hammond, and other garagey touches! As usual with Ace, the whole thing's supported with nicely detailed notes that tell the whole story behind these wonderful lost gems (we like this one even better than the fab first volume) – and titles include "Namida No Go Go" by Emy Jackson & Blue Comets, "Koi Gurui" by Chiyo Okumura, "Tokyo No Hito" by The Peanuts, "Warui Kuse" by Kazumi Yasui, "Boy & Girl" by Akiko Wada, "Namida No Mori No Monogatari" by Akiko Nakamura, "Saike Na Machi" by Reiko Mari, "Bazazz No 1" by Kayoko Ishuu, and "Furi Furi 5" by Linda Yamamoto. VariousOn The Dancefloor With A Fingersnap – 31 Pops To Make The Party Shake ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $13.99 18.99
The fingersnap here is the key – as all the cuts here have a nicely romping kind of groove – a sweet sense of rhythm that's bound to get your toes tapping as much as your fingers are snapping – thanks to a nice sense of space between the notes! The music is from a variety of different genres – late 50s/early 60s country, pop, jazz, and R&B – all brought together here with the usual great Bear Family sense of an inventive tracklist, and definite panache for putting together a collection! The set features 31 tracks in all – and titles include "Tremblin" by Byrdie Green, "Love Charms" by Sanford Clark, "Lookout Mountain" by Chuck Miller, "Walk With Me Lord" by Ruth Brown, "King Of The Road" by Roger Miller, "My Nerves" by Little Willie John, "Coal Miner" by Nappy Brown, "Fever" by Peggy Lee, "Tale Of Woe" by Wynonie Harris, "Hawk" by Bill Haley & The Comets, "Jack That Cat Was Clean" by Dr Horse, "Chills & Fever" by Ronnie Love, "Sixteen Tons" by Jimmy Dean, "Tiny Tim" by LaVern Baker, "Satan Is Her Name' by Steve King & The Echelons, and "Heartbeat" by The Collins Kids. ✨✧ Brian JacksonThis Is Brian Jackson ... LP
BBE (UK), 2022. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A stunning revival for the great Brian Jackson – an artist who's best known as the keyboardist with Gil Scott-Heron in the 70s, but a hell of a singer on his own – as you'll hear in this really wonderful set! The album's not Jackson's first solo effort – but it may well be the first to really put him in the spotlight so strongly – a record that's completely wonderful from start to finish – with elements that will definitely resonate strongly with Brian's classic recordings with Gil, but also really show him as his own artist too! The tracks are a mix of vocal numbers and a few other instrumentals – with Jackson on Rhodes and Wurlitzer electric pianos, plus some great flute too – set up in small combo backings on titles that include "Mami Wata", "Path To Macondo/Those Kind Of Blues", "Hold On", "Force Of Will", "All Talk", "Nomad", and "C'Est Cette Comete". ✨✧ VariousI-Robots Present Phantom Records ... LP
Mondo Groove (Italy), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
I-Robots take a mighty cool look at the Phantom Records label – a small imprint from that great moment when the Italian club scene was getting pretty electric and cosmic – almost as a dancefloor extension of sound library modes from a few years before! The cuts here all have plenty of keyboards and a fair bit of spacey touches – all while managing to sound upbeat and funky, although with more colder electro modes as some of the tracks move a bit further into the 80s run of the label. Some tracks are quite short, others are longer groovers – and titles include "Come With Me (I-Robots reconstruction)" by Carlotto, "Cometa Music Hall" by Cometa Music Hall, "Whirlwind" by Don Bernini, "Radio Cosmo 101" by The One O Ones, and "Music One (parts 1, 7, & 8)" by Musicone.
