Comet Is ComingAfterlife ... CD
Universal (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $9.99
A brilliant blast from The Comet Is Coming – their second album on Impulse in less than a year – and it's as exciting as anything they've done so far! Their core vibe of mixing spiritual jazz with electronic experimentation is here in full force, but they take it new directions. While the trio carries the influences from 70s spacey fusion influences and modern London jazz on the other, it always feels fully unique and of their own invention. Part of what's so exciting is they can strip things down to minimalist vibe of melodic sax, spare drums and bubbling electronics to far-reaching jazz funk from one track to the next – this is trio with range! Poet Joshua Idehen delivers a righteous vocal on the opener "All That Matters Is The Moments" that sets the stage for the soaring ride that follows, including "The Softness Of The Present", "The Afterlife", "Lifeforce Part I", "Lifeforce Part II" and "The Seven Planetary Heavens". CD

Comet Is ComingChannel The Spirits (special edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Leaf (UK), 2016. New Copy 2CD ... $13.99 14.99
The amazing first full length set of Comet Is Coming – one of the boldest statements from the London jazz scene in recent years – and a brilliant blend of live jazz instrumentation and electronics! Shabaka Hutchings – as King Shabaka – is in the group on tenor, which he blows with this strongly spiritual quality – really reaching out as this organic core amidst some of the spacier, noisier touches – all of which never get too far-out, and which are just balanced enough to effect the cosmic journey that's always been the group's promise! Drums are nice and heavy too, and the whole thing has this fantastic vibe that's as immediately appealing as it is completely unique – which you'll hear on tunes that include "Space Carnival", "The Prophecy", "Channel The Spirits", "Deep Within The Engine Deck", and "Journey Through The Asteroid Belt". As a bonus, the 2CD edition also features their debut Prophecy EP – plus unheard tracks titled Ancient Tapes – "Slammin", "Transmission", and "Closing Credits". CD

Impulse, 2020. New Copy (pic cover)... $11.99
A really full-on track from Comet Is Coming – a cut that has all the cosmic touches of their other work, but which also features vocals from Joshua Idehen – who's got this dark, bold vibe that really seems to send the group over the top! The cut may well be the most sonically intense track we've ever heard from Comet – and it's backed by a remix of "Super Zodiac" on the flipside! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Comet Is ComingTrust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery ... CD
Impulse, 2019. Used ... $9.99
A fantastic blend of spiritual jazz styles and electronic elements – served up here by the trio of drummer Betamax, keyboardist Danalogue, and saxophonist King Shabaka – the last of whom you might recognize as Shabaka Hutchings from a host of other hip projects on the contemporary London scene! Shabaka's work on tenor and bass clarinet really gives the record an earthy, organic core – which seems to let the keyboards really soar off into space, often with the sort of vibe that you'd guess from the group's name and the cover image on the record – in a wide flurry of live and amplified performance elements! At some level, the trio is almost London's answer to some of the jazz-meets-studio work from Chicago's International Anthem label – and like some of the groups who record for that imprint, these guys are all strong jazz musicians at the core – but performing at a level that's very beyond the ordinary. Titles include "Birth Of Creation", "Summon The Fire", "Blood Of The Past", "Astral Flying", "Super Zodiac", "The Universe Wakes Up", and "Timewave Zero". CD

✨✧ Barry GuyIrvin's Comet ... LP
No Business (Lithuania), 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Solo bass from the great Barry Guy – titled after the painting Comet, by Albert Irving – an image which graces the cover of the record – but served up here in a style of sound that's completely Barry's own! The music has that mindblowing quality that Guy can hit when he's really at his best – that way of opening up the instrument to new sonic possibilities that first made him such an exciting improviser at the start of his career, and which is still best heard in a solo setting like this – one that shows that Barry has lost none of his fire, nor is ever willing to just hang around in territory that's too familiar from earlier periods in his career. The painting in the title is apt – as at times, Guy has a very painterly style in sound – really making all the right choices all feel so right – on titles that include "Comet", "Oscillating", "Old Earth Home", "Barehead", and "Closed Space". Tony AllenTony Allen Live ... CD
Comet (France), 2004. Used ... $11.99
Smoking Afro Funk from the legendary Tony Allen – recording during an incredible world tour in 2004, in a lean, mean groove that stands as a nice counterpoint to his studio sessions of the past few years! Tony's working here with a stripped down quintet – led by himself on drums and vocals, and featuring lots of Fender Rhodes and other keyboards, plus trumpet, bass, and guitar. The sound here is really great – as all tunes on the set are nice and long – and taken in back-to-basic jams that get back to the core sound of Afro Funk that Tony first invented with Fela, while still retaining some of the more cosmic touches of some of Allen's recent work. There's no overly-clever electronics or studio tricks to get in the way of the grooves – and the tunes on the set jam with an intensity that shows why Tony's been selling out concerts around the world in recent years! Titles include "Don't Fight", "Yeshe", "No Accomodation", "Eparapo", "Asiko", and "Black Voices". CD

Tony Allen & Afrika 70Jealousy ... LP
Comet (France), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 44.98
The start of a legend – the tremendous debut of drummer Tony Allen as a leader, after some key 70s work in the group of Fela Kuti! Fela's group is backing Tony up here – the key Afrika 70 lineup – and even Fela gets in on the action by laying down some piano solos and tenor – key proof that he had plenty of faith in Tony going out on his own! And heck, Fela even produced the record, and helped Allen with arrangements on his tunes – two side-long jammers that really live up to any expectations you might have, and which make the Afrika 70 legend proud – "Jealousy" and "Hustler". LP, Vinyl record album

Tony Allen & Afrika 70No Accommodation For Lagos ... LP
Comet (France), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 44.99
Fantastic stuff – and one of the records that made drummer Tony Allen a legend, and one of the key musicians to step out of the larger setting of the Afrika 70 group of Fela Kuti! Allen's the leader here, and the vibe is nicely a bit different than some of Fela's records – although the man himself also handles the production, and plays with the larger group too – giving the set a nice tie to Tony Allen's roots, but also really showing that strong sense of character that's made him such an interesting, continually evolving force over the decades! As with some of the classic Fela albums, each side of the album features a long track with a very righteous Afro Funk vibe – "No Accommodation For Lagos" and "African Message". LP, Vinyl record album

Comet (France), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 44.98
An Afro Funk classic – killer solo work from Tony Allen – originally known as the drummer for Fela during his key years – stepping out here on his own with the Afrika 70 band! The album's a monster all the way through – every bit as great as any of Fela's 70s classics, but handled with a weird twist, too – the kind of offbeat groove we've come to love from Allen's revival of the past decade – laid out here in a wonderful groove that's very drum-heavy on the bottom! The album's only got two long tracks – "Progress" and "Afro Disco Beat" – but each runs for a side apiece, which makes for plenty of funky changes! LP, Vinyl record album

Comet (France), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 44.99
Tony Allen steps out onto his own – moving away from the Afrika 70 group who accompanied him on his first three solo albums – nicely cooking here into a whole new groove! The tracks are a bit shorter than the side-long jams of previous records, but no less funky – as Tony somehow manages to pack all the great bits he learned while working with Fela into a tighter space – coming up with the nicely offbeat grooves we've always loved him for – in a large lineup that's heavy on guitars, keyboards, and percussion – with some nice trumpet and baritone sax as well! There's vocals on most tracks – but mostly in the sing-song chorus mode – and titles include the classic "Ariya", plus "Road Safety", "Love Is A Natural Thing", and "No Discrimination". Comet/Rambling (Japan), 2005. Used ... $4.99
The first full length set from a group we love for their earlier singles on Comet Records – and who step out here with a well-crafted approach to dancefloor Brazilian! Nutropic have a soulful sensibility that goes way beyond simple bossa remix tricks – a style that balances Brazilian rhythms with some warmer soul-based touches – almost in the mode of the first few singles by Mr Hermano, but often with a gentler groove and a nice use of jazz from time to time. Vocals are especially strong – sung by Fernanda Porto, Anna Torres, and Allen Hoist – and lots of the tracks have excellent keyboards that really round out the sound. Titles include "Leva E Traz", "Suave", "Galeao 70", "Sambador", "Voce Sabe", "Eastern Soul", "Saudade De Um Grande Amor", "Papa Songo", and "Pascalito's Theme" – and the CD also feature some bonus remixes! Universe/Comet (Italy), 1978. Used Gatefold ... $19.99
The title's a reference to the special presence of Polish violinist Zbigniew Siefert, who joins Oregon for the set – and it's also the name of the side-long track on the first half of the record – a surprisingly beautiful long improvisation by the entire group! Given the way that Oregon can take other instruments and provide them in a very different setting, they also do the same thing here with Siefert – who has elements that are sometimes different than his own records, especially the more fusion-based ones – flowering wonderfully in the acoustic setting provided by Paul McCandless on oboe and bass clarinet, Glen Moore on bass, Ralph Towner on guitars and piano, and Collin Walcott on tablas and percussion. In addition to the long track "Violin", other titles include "Raven's Mood", "Serenade", "Flagolet", and "Friend Of The Family". CD

Landmark material from the legendary Nigerian percussionist! NEPA is a great little album from Tony Allen – recorded in the mid 80s, but with a chunky groove that's very much in the style of his 70s Afro Funk work! The title track is one of Allen's best cuts ever – a really anthemic tune with a punchy hook that's as infectious as it is political – and other tracks on the set are equally nice, touched with some slight electronic bits, giving them a cool Celluloid Electric Africa vibe! Comet (France), Late 90s/Early 2000s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
An excellent look at early work on the Comet Records label – the Paris imprint who really helped the Afro Funk sound of the 70s evolve a few more notches as the 21st Century dawned – thanks to key work with Tony Allen, and a host of other groundbreaking artists too! Comet are first of all to be commended for bringing Allen back to the ears of a global audience – and also for helping him really find that new groove that he then followed for the past two decades – heard here on both one of his tracks, and some of his performances with others! The work here is a whole new explosion in African rhythms and inspirations – modes that really shift the role of Paris from its initial post-colonial recordings of the 60s and 70s. All tracks were only issued as singles, long out of print –a nd titles include "Airya (Catalyst rmx)" by Tony Allen, "Drum" by Sons Of The Scientists featuring Eska, "Push Your Mind (break beat rmx)" by Doctor L, "Brotherhood" by Cinematic Orchestra, and "Take A Rest (Chateau Flight rmx)" by Psycho On Da Bus. Terence BlanchardMagnetic ... CD
Blue Note, 2013. Used ... $5.99
The continuing evolution of Terence Blanchard – a trumpeter who's had a great sense of restraint in recent recordings – which makes each new musical moment a very nice surprise! This is the first small group set we've heard from Terence in a number of years – and it's got a fresh feel that comes through on the boldness of the very first notes, and on the ever-shifting sense of mood and color that graces the entire set – a style that references Blanchard's work in soundtrack and other large-format settings, but which comes through even more strongly here in the presence of a smaller group! Blanchard's got some great tenor help on the record – mostly from Brice Winston, but also a bit from Ravi Coltrane too – and the other key players on the set are pianist Fabian Almazan on piano, Joshua Crumbly on bass, and Kendrick Scott on drums. The set also features a bit of guest work from Lionel Loueke on guitar and Ron Carter on bass – and titles include "Another Step", "Time To Spare", "Comet", "Hallucinations", "Magnetic", "Don't Run", and "Pet Step Sitter's Theme Song". We're not sure if Lloyd's actually the fastest guitar in the world – but this is a pretty darn groovy album, no matter what the speed! The set's party jazz and partly guitar-driven instrumental work – played by Ellis on a hollow-body electric, with backing by a quartet that includes Tony Morrell on alto and flute, Jerry Christy on bass, and Bennie Steele on drums. The sound's got a nice mix of west coast chamber jazzing with some more pyrotechnic moments – almost kicking up a Jim Hall/Chico Hamilton groove with a bit of Billy Mure fireworks! Titles include "Hot Rod", "Gully Jumper", "Patsy", "Stuff", and "Topsy" – and the cover's got a cool painting of a guitar circling the earth like a comet! LP, Vinyl record album

A great little collection that seeks to put the Bristol scene on the map – and to show the kind of inventive jazz the city's been offering up in recent years! The Moomins comics have delighted the world for generations – but fewer folks have seen the early 80s Moomins TV show – which is a masterpiece of felt-based, stop-motion animation! And while the images on the screen are amazing, the music for the program is equally great – spare, slow electronic numbers that have a beautifully playful vibe, but something of a dark edge too – maybe much more in the mode of more whimsical underground electronic work from the early 70s than you'd guess from the date of the show! The program was animated in Poland, and some of these tunes have a style that's similar to the coolest Polish electronic sound library material we've stocked over the years – although the musicians themselves were actually part of the post punk scene in Leeds. Just-IceMasterpiece ... CD
Fresh/Traffic, 1990. New Copy ... $7.99 15.98
A later set by Just Ice – produced by Grandmaster Flash – and record that sounds a lot better than we remembered! Tight, hard hitting dawn of the 90s beats from Flash and that gruff, tight rhyme delivery from Just-Ice. It might not be a masterpiece on par with Kool & Deadly, but it's plenty tough to our ears after all these years. Includes "Get Into Something", "The Iceman Cometh", "Slow, Low & Dope", "Rollin With The Just", and "I Write This In The Dark" with Angie B of The Sequence, known today as Angie Stone! CD

Rita LeeAtras Do Porto Tem Uma Cidade (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Philips/Polysom (Brazil), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 50.99
A wild solo project from Rita Lee – done after the breakup of Os Mutantes, and offered up almost as some sort of commentary on mainstream rock in the 70s! There's a much more straightforward approach to the music here – a sometimes-glammy sound that's echoed by the band's space-style costumes and makeup – but there's also some weirdly old-style rock instrumentation too, almost like the way that an artist like Gary Glitter could fold the 50s and 70s together in his music, and come across making something very weird and new. Here, the keyboards are almost stronger than the guitars – and Rita herself plays moog, melotron, organ, and piano – on titles that include "Tem Uma Cidade", "Menino Bonito", "Mame Natureza", and "Eclipse Do Cometa". LP, Vinyl record album
(Nice heavy vinyl – with a bonus poster too!)

Egisto MacchiESP (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Cometa (Italy), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99
One of the weirdest sound library records we've ever heard from Egiso Macchi – and that's really saying a lot, given how much weird music the man has given us over the years! The set is very heavy on sounds created by the theremin – but with styles that are often a bit different than the more famous sci-fi soundtrack use of the instrument, or some of its forays into pop! Instead, Macchi uses theremin with a nice degree of subtlety – not always running up and down the scale, and often just letting waves flow out alongside strings – sparking a great relationship between the spacey and the standard. The set features 10 tracks in all – with a title variation on "ESP" – and there's also some isolated bass or violin parts that augment the music too. LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition of 150 – remastered 2021 version!)

Nino NardiniMusique Pour Le Futur ... LP
WRWTFWW (Switzerland), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 28.99
Nino Nardini's given us some very groovy music over the years – like his famous Jungle Obsession album – but this set has the maestro working in a completely different mode – turning out some incredibly haunting sounds in a musique concrete approach! Nardini composed all the tracks, and they've got a sound that takes us back to the legendary years on the French scene of the 50s – like important early work by Pierre Henry or Pierre Schaeffer – with a mix of acoustic elements and electronics, all in a mode that's definitely pointed towards the future of the title. The style is never too atonal – Nardini does allow for some of his sense of melody to hit the music from time to time – and titles include "Station X", "La Danse Des Cometes", "Decouvert Lunaire", "Planete Mars", and "Galaxie Inconnue". Stefano Torossi & Giovanni TomassoEchoing America (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Cometa (Italy), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A record that definitely lives up to its title – an obscure Italian sound library session that blends instrumental touches that evoke an America at the start of the 70s with some of the hipper, deeper currents you'd expect from the team of Stefano Torossi and Giovanni Tomasso! There's plenty of expected sound library funk in the mix here – but there's also bits of banjo, harmonica, and acoustic guitar – all used sparely, but in a way that paints "America" on some of the groovier cuts here – in a way that makes for one of the most unique sound library sessions we've ever heard! Plus, the book comes with some nicely hokey notes about our nation, and some nice vintage photos – including images of a hippie wrapped in a flag in a hammock, and a confederate soldier loading a canon. Titles include "Black Power", "Policeman", "Fake It", "Six Miles From Blackstook", "Slateridge Sunday Breakdown", "Harlem Jungle", and "Metropolis". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousMusic Is My Life ... LP
Cometa (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $32.99 36.98
Not much of a cover, but that's usually the way it is with the Cometa Sound Library – who provided all the great grooves on this set! Cometa was one of the more obscure sound library labels on the 70s scene – but they also maybe lasted the longest, perhaps because they were small – and they managed to forge relations with some of the best composers from the Italian film scene at the time – who bring to their recordings a wealth of cool instrumental touches and unusual elements that rival our favorite soundtracks! This set follows the full scope of the Cometa sound – some numbers are funky, some are jazzy, some are dreamy, and one even gets a bit disco – and titles include "Il Caso Bebawi" by Berto Pisano, "Colpi Di Piume E Tempesta" by Ennio Morricone, "American Sound" by Alessandro Alessandroni & Sandro Brugnoli, "Macchina D'Amore" by Armando Trovajoli, "Dolce Notte" by Luigi Zito, and "Policeman" by Tito Schipa & Giovanni Tommaso. VariousNippon Girls Vol 2 – Japanese Pop, Beat, & Rock & Roll 1965 to 1970 ... CD
Big Beat (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Mad sounds from the late 60s world of Japanese pop – a mindblowing, ear-opening batch of singles we never would have gotten our hands on otherwise! The music here feels like sounds coming out of some backroom jukebox in a Nikkatsu "new action" film – or maybe the kind of offbeat pop that Quentin Tarantino might throw into a soundtrack – but there's also a much deeper range of sounds going on than you might expect, with wonderfully clever instrumentation, and lots of surprisingly heartfelt passages in the vocals! And sure, the language might be a barrier – but there's a really universal sense of appeal to this music – a variant of 60s soul and pop, focused through a different sort of lense – and the instrumentation alone is great – with wicked guitars, Hammond, and other garagey touches! As usual with Ace, the whole thing's supported with nicely detailed notes that tell the whole story behind these wonderful lost gems (we like this one even better than the fab first volume) – and titles include "Namida No Go Go" by Emy Jackson & Blue Comets, "Koi Gurui" by Chiyo Okumura, "Tokyo No Hito" by The Peanuts, "Warui Kuse" by Kazumi Yasui, "Boy & Girl" by Akiko Wada, "Namida No Mori No Monogatari" by Akiko Nakamura, "Saike Na Machi" by Reiko Mari, "Bazazz No 1" by Kayoko Ishuu, and "Furi Furi 5" by Linda Yamamoto. ✨✧ VariousGene Vincent Connection – 36 Roots & Covers Of Gene Vincent ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A very cool collection of songs that might be considered to be "in orbit" of the great Gene Vincent – as these are either tunes that first inspired Gene to make his own recordings, or tracks that feature others taking on tunes from the Gene Vincent songbook – sometimes in styles that are very different than the raw sound of Gene's early material with the Blue Caps! The package is done in the beautiful Bear Family style – not just a fantastic selection of really obscure tunes, but detailed notes that follow the great look of the cover – and really illuminate all these lost nuggets from the glory days of rock and pop on the 45rpm single! There's a massive 36 tracks in all – and titles include "I'm Going Home" by The Spotnicks, "Right Here On Earth" by Johnny Rebb & His Rebels, "Anna Annabelle" by Les Chats Sauvage, "High Blood Pressure" by Huey Piano Smith, "Jump Back Honey Jump Back" by Hadda Brooks, "Woman Love" by Jimmy Johnson, "Rollin Danny" by Max K Lipscomb, "Five Days Five Days" by Vince Eager, "Red Blue Jeans & A Ponytail" by Freddie Franks, "Bluejean Bop" by Rock Ragge & His Four Comets, "Double Talkin Baby" by Bobby Milano, and "Big Fat Saturday Night" by Gene Princeton. ✨✧ Voices of Walter SchumannExploring the Unknown ... LP
RCA, 1955. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
One of the postwar space-age classics! The normally-sleepy chorus of Walter Schumann is used to create the backdrop for a narrative of space flight – read by Paul Frees, and involving the takeoff of a rocket from the Pacific, soaring into space, past the moon, and arriving on Venus. The voices drift in and out of the mix, louder and softer while Frees reads from the script for the album. The orchestrations are by Leith Stevens, best known for his jazzy soundtrack work, but sounding pretty great here, and providing a perfect spooky accompaniment to the voices and reading. Titles include "Space Station", "New Frontiers", "Arrival At Venus", "Teleportation", "The Comets", and "Regions Of Other Suns". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono black label pressing with deep groove. Cover has a split bottom seam, light surface wear, and light aging.)
