Comet Is ComingAfterlife ... CD
Universal (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $9.99
A brilliant blast from The Comet Is Coming – their second album on Impulse in less than a year – and it's as exciting as anything they've done so far! Their core vibe of mixing spiritual jazz with electronic experimentation is here in full force, but they take it new directions. While the trio carries the influences from 70s spacey fusion influences and modern London jazz on the other, it always feels fully unique and of their own invention. Part of what's so exciting is they can strip things down to minimalist vibe of melodic sax, spare drums and bubbling electronics to far-reaching jazz funk from one track to the next – this is trio with range! Poet Joshua Idehen delivers a righteous vocal on the opener "All That Matters Is The Moments" that sets the stage for the soaring ride that follows, including "The Softness Of The Present", "The Afterlife", "Lifeforce Part I", "Lifeforce Part II" and "The Seven Planetary Heavens". ✨✧ Comet Is ComingChannel The Spirits (special edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Leaf (UK), 2016. New Copy 2CD ... $13.99 14.99
The amazing first full length set of Comet Is Coming – one of the boldest statements from the London jazz scene in recent years – and a brilliant blend of live jazz instrumentation and electronics! Shabaka Hutchings – as King Shabaka – is in the group on tenor, which he blows with this strongly spiritual quality – really reaching out as this organic core amidst some of the spacier, noisier touches – all of which never get too far-out, and which are just balanced enough to effect the cosmic journey that's always been the group's promise! Drums are nice and heavy too, and the whole thing has this fantastic vibe that's as immediately appealing as it is completely unique – which you'll hear on tunes that include "Space Carnival", "The Prophecy", "Channel The Spirits", "Deep Within The Engine Deck", and "Journey Through The Asteroid Belt". As a bonus, the 2CD edition also features their debut Prophecy EP – plus unheard tracks titled Ancient Tapes – "Slammin", "Transmission", and "Closing Credits". CD

Comet Is ComingTrust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery ... CD
Impulse, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic blend of spiritual jazz styles and electronic elements – served up here by the trio of drummer Betamax, keyboardist Danalogue, and saxophonist King Shabaka – the last of whom you might recognize as Shabaka Hutchings from a host of other hip projects on the contemporary London scene! Shabaka's work on tenor and bass clarinet really gives the record an earthy, organic core – which seems to let the keyboards really soar off into space, often with the sort of vibe that you'd guess from the group's name and the cover image on the record – in a wide flurry of live and amplified performance elements! At some level, the trio is almost London's answer to some of the jazz-meets-studio work from Chicago's International Anthem label – and like some of the groups who record for that imprint, these guys are all strong jazz musicians at the core – but performing at a level that's very beyond the ordinary. Titles include "Birth Of Creation", "Summon The Fire", "Blood Of The Past", "Astral Flying", "Super Zodiac", "The Universe Wakes Up", and "Timewave Zero". CD

✨✧ Barry GuyIrvin's Comet ... LP
No Business (Lithuania), 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Solo bass from the great Barry Guy – titled after the painting Comet, by Albert Irving – an image which graces the cover of the record – but served up here in a style of sound that's completely Barry's own! The music has that mindblowing quality that Guy can hit when he's really at his best – that way of opening up the instrument to new sonic possibilities that first made him such an exciting improviser at the start of his career, and which is still best heard in a solo setting like this – one that shows that Barry has lost none of his fire, nor is ever willing to just hang around in territory that's too familiar from earlier periods in his career. The painting in the title is apt – as at times, Guy has a very painterly style in sound – really making all the right choices all feel so right – on titles that include "Comet", "Oscillating", "Old Earth Home", "Barehead", and "Closed Space". Tony Allen & Afrika 70Jealousy ... LP
Comet (France), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 44.98
The start of a legend – the tremendous debut of drummer Tony Allen as a leader, after some key 70s work in the group of Fela Kuti! Fela's group is backing Tony up here – the key Afrika 70 lineup – and even Fela gets in on the action by laying down some piano solos and tenor – key proof that he had plenty of faith in Tony going out on his own! And heck, Fela even produced the record, and helped Allen with arrangements on his tunes – two side-long jammers that really live up to any expectations you might have, and which make the Afrika 70 legend proud – "Jealousy" and "Hustler". Comet (France), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 44.98
An Afro Funk classic – killer solo work from Tony Allen – originally known as the drummer for Fela during his key years – stepping out here on his own with the Afrika 70 band! The album's a monster all the way through – every bit as great as any of Fela's 70s classics, but handled with a weird twist, too – the kind of offbeat groove we've come to love from Allen's revival of the past decade – laid out here in a wonderful groove that's very drum-heavy on the bottom! The album's only got two long tracks – "Progress" and "Afro Disco Beat" – but each runs for a side apiece, which makes for plenty of funky changes! LP, Vinyl record album

Nu TropicVoce Sabe (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Comet/Rambling (Japan), 2005. Used ... $11.99
The first full length set from a group we love for their earlier singles on Comet Records – and who step out here with a well-crafted approach to dancefloor Brazilian! Nutropic have a soulful sensibility that goes way beyond simple bossa remix tricks – a style that balances Brazilian rhythms with some warmer soul-based touches – almost in the mode of the first few singles by Mr Hermano, but often with a gentler groove and a nice use of jazz from time to time. Vocals are especially strong – sung by Fernanda Porto, Anna Torres, and Allen Hoist – and lots of the tracks have excellent keyboards that really round out the sound. Titles include "Leva E Traz", "Suave", "Galeao 70", "Sambador", "Voce Sabe", "Eastern Soul", "Saudade De Um Grande Amor", "Papa Songo", and "Pascalito's Theme" – and the CD also feature some bonus remixes! Rare MoodsPeace In Da Neighborhood ... CD
Comet (France), 2004. Used ... $5.99
A nice full length debut from Rare Moods – a pastiche of sample-based funky soul, righteous jazzy riffing and angular soundscapes! The album's inspired by all those soulful and funky characteristics that we dig crates hoping to find – propulsive, crackly beats, soulful vocals, and spacey soul jazz – delivered with a surprisingly mellow overall feel. That's not to say it's complete chillout affair – the good Doctor throws in plenty of off-kilter beats and effects, and throws of the time in spots to make it good and trippy! Tracks include "Silk", "Peace In Da Neighbor Hood", "Numbers", "Slim's Around", "Cape Of Good Hope", "Oil On Fire", "This Is Not Your Frequency", "Sun City", "A Bad Trip", "Space Mates", "Misery Lane" and more! That's a mid-70s photo of Kraftwerk on the cover – and the record features a great live set recorded right after their legendary Autobahn album – done with a similar long, sprawling vibe – but with a different feel than in the studio! Side one features a version of "Autobahn", structurally similar to the record, but with sharper edges and much more of a sense of darkness that hints at the earlier sound of the group – and the flipside follows with equally edgey takes on two shorter tunes – the amazing flute-riffing "Ruckzuck", and the nicely spacey "Kometemelodie" – which is the record we always promise to put on when a comet is threatening impact with our planet! Parker is sometimes very deft, sometimes more in the textural territory of his more spacious improvisations – and at points, he's able to fold the two together beautifully – always seeming to direct the proceedings of the entire group, although it's clear that each player brings a fair bit of their own energy to bear in the proceedings. The bass of Edwards might be one of the most important elements – sometimes a bit more understated than the others, but in a way that really provides some glue for the whole thing – on titles that include "The Alchemy Of John Edwards", "A Well Staring At The Sky", "The Influence Of The Dog Star", "Art Is A Science", "A Blazing Star Or Comet Appeared", and "The Weather Set In Hot". ✨✧ Eric SidayUltra Sonic Perception ... LP
Dual Planet (Australia), Early 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Very early electronic sound library material from Eric Siday – so much so, that all these tracks were originally issued as 78rpm singles – at a time before the sound library scene moved into using full LPs! A number of cuts here were used as early passages on the first Doctor Who episodes – and others follow nicely in a similar vein – with very bold, powerful explorations of the earliest elements of analogue electronics – and an especially strong ear for the darker side of the spectrum! Most numbers here are never too noisy – not as much so as avant compositional work of the time – but they hang on the edge in a really great way, creating a lot of stark spacey elements with just a few deft touches. Titles include "Comet", "Ultimate", "Moonscape", "Galaxy", "Suspended Animation", "The Machines", "Pavane", "Pizzicato Piano", "Challenge Of Space", and "Eclipse". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jerry ButlerIce Man Cometh ... CD
Mercury/Intermusic (Spain), 1968. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing soul from one of the greats of the 60s! This album was one of the first that Jerry cut for Mercury – where he'd begun working with the young team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff to completely rework the earlier sound he'd forged at Vee Jay Records. The album's still got Jerry singing in his wonderfully rich deep voice – hence the "iceman" in the title – but the songs have a bit more of a groove to them, with a soaring soul style that really lifts Jerry up, and pushes him onto a whole new generation of soul fans. The best proof of this are the hits "Hey Western Union Man" and "Never Give You Up" – but the whole album's great, and like most of Jerry's LPs, it's got many wonderful tunes hiding underneath the hits. Titles include "How Can I Get In Touch With You", "Can't Forget About You Baby", "Are You Happy", and "Go Away Find Yourself" – as well as other hits like "Lost" and "Only The Strong Survive". CD

One of the coolest albums ever from the legendary Cometa sound library – a set that's every bit as weird and wonderful as you'd guess from its cover image of a hand holding a flower with eyeballs on each petal! The music's maybe not as trippy as that picture, but it does have lots of cool and groovy touches – sweet Fender Rhodes at some points, jazzy reeds at others, and even some more evocative passages that almost have a deeper soundtrack vibe – but which soon return to the kind of tight, funky numbers that we love so much in Italian sound library material from this time! The players aren't named, but they're clearly top-shelf talents from the scene – and tracks include the funky "Rash", plus "Riddle", "Happy Fire", "Swallow", "Canty", "Diplomat", "Gadder", "Bike", and "Daydream". Guido & Maurizio De AngelisLa Montagana Del Dio Cannibale/Messalina Messalina ... CD
Cometa (Italy), 1977/1978. New Copy ... $18.99
A pair of thrilling 70s action scores – back to back on a single CD! First up is La Montagna Del Dio Cannibale – a cannibal narrative scored with a great sense of drama by the De Angelis brothers – almost the same energy as their cop/crime work, but without the funk – just full, rich sounds that really build over time, and create this strong feeling of suspense! There's a few exotic elements in the music, given the setting – and these make for some slight hint of a groove – and titles include "Visioni Distorte", "Marcia Allucinante", "La Montagana E Il Mistero", "Ipnosi Tragica", and "Il Dio Cannibale". Messalina Messalina has an older Roman setting, and a relatively sexy narrative – and the music is scored with a mix of percussion, light flute, and some slinky electric basslines – of that great sort that was often used to convey sex in 70s Euro cinema! Some of the melodies are playful, others more erotic – and titles include "Notti Romane", "Danzatrici", "Incontro D'Amore", "Un Piacevole Addio", "Messalina", and "Ballata Burlona". CD

Rita LeeAtras Do Porto Tem Uma Cidade ... CD
Polydor (Brazil), 1974. New Copy ... $9.99
A wild solo project from Rita Lee – done after the breakup of Os Mutantes, and offered up almost as some sort of commentary on mainstream rock in the 70s! There's a much more straightforward approach to the music here – a sometimes-glammy sound that's echoed by the band's space-style costumes and makeup – but there's also some weirdly old-style rock instrumentation too, almost like the way that an artist like Gary Glitter could fold the 50s and 70s together in his music, and come across making something very weird and new. Here, the keyboards are almost stronger than the guitars – and Rita herself plays moog, melotron, organ, and piano – on titles that include "Tem Uma Cidade", "Menino Bonito", "Mame Natureza", and "Eclipse Do Cometa". Cometa/Roundtable (Australia), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
Way more than just another set of soundtrack work from the Italian scene of the 70s – and instead, a record that stands equally well on its own, with a really complicated mix of larger themes, folksy currents, and some avant garde instrumentation! The music is possibly some of the warmest we've ever heard from Egisto Macchi, but also some of the most complex, too – as the record begins with this mix of acoustic guitar over sonic textures, almost sentimental in quality – but soon moves into some of the more offbeat elements that define the Macchi legacy – many sounds carried far from their initial instrumental sources, coming together with an overall vibe that lies somewhere in a space between Italian soundtracks and the experimentation on the Cramps Records label. Titles include "Citta Notte", "Bidonvilles", "Orsa Maggiore", "Lampare", and "Terza Eta". LP, Vinyl record album

Nino Nardini's given us some very groovy music over the years – like his famous Jungle Obsession album – but this set has the maestro working in a completely different mode – turning out some incredibly haunting sounds in a musique concrete approach! Nardini composed all the tracks, and they've got a sound that takes us back to the legendary years on the French scene of the 50s – like important early work by Pierre Henry or Pierre Schaeffer – with a mix of acoustic elements and electronics, all in a mode that's definitely pointed towards the future of the title. The style is never too atonal – Nardini does allow for some of his sense of melody to hit the music from time to time – and titles include "Station X", "La Danse Des Cometes", "Decouvert Lunaire", "Planete Mars", and "Galaxie Inconnue". Voices of Walter SchumannExploring the Unknown ... LP
RCA, 1955. Very Good ... $29.99
One of the postwar space-age classics! The normally-sleepy chorus of Walter Schumann is used to create the backdrop for a narrative of space flight – read by Paul Frees, and involving the takeoff of a rocket from the Pacific, soaring into space, past the moon, and arriving on Venus. The voices drift in and out of the mix, louder and softer while Frees reads from the script for the album. The orchestrations are by Leith Stevens, best known for his jazzy soundtrack work, but sounding pretty great here, and providing a perfect spooky accompaniment to the voices and reading. Titles include "Space Station", "New Frontiers", "Arrival At Venus", "Teleportation", "The Comets", and "Regions Of Other Suns". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono black label pressing with deep groove. Cover has a split bottom seam, light surface wear, and light aging.)

Stefano Torossi & Giovanni TomassoEchoing America (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Cometa (Italy), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A record that definitely lives up to its title – an obscure Italian sound library session that blends instrumental touches that evoke an America at the start of the 70s with some of the hipper, deeper currents you'd expect from the team of Stefano Torossi and Giovanni Tomasso! There's plenty of expected sound library funk in the mix here – but there's also bits of banjo, harmonica, and acoustic guitar – all used sparely, but in a way that paints "America" on some of the groovier cuts here – in a way that makes for one of the most unique sound library sessions we've ever heard! Plus, the book comes with some nicely hokey notes about our nation, and some nice vintage photos – including images of a hippie wrapped in a flag in a hammock, and a confederate soldier loading a canon. Titles include "Black Power", "Policeman", "Fake It", "Six Miles From Blackstook", "Slateridge Sunday Breakdown", "Harlem Jungle", and "Metropolis". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition of 300 – on colored vinyl!)

✨✧ VariousMusic Is My Life ... LP
Cometa (Italy), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $32.99 36.98
Not much of a cover, but that's usually the way it is with the Cometa Sound Library – who provided all the great grooves on this set! Cometa was one of the more obscure sound library labels on the 70s scene – but they also maybe lasted the longest, perhaps because they were small – and they managed to forge relations with some of the best composers from the Italian film scene at the time – who bring to their recordings a wealth of cool instrumental touches and unusual elements that rival our favorite soundtracks! This set follows the full scope of the Cometa sound – some numbers are funky, some are jazzy, some are dreamy, and one even gets a bit disco – and titles include "Il Caso Bebawi" by Berto Pisano, "Colpi Di Piume E Tempesta" by Ennio Morricone, "American Sound" by Alessandro Alessandroni & Sandro Brugnoli, "Macchina D'Amore" by Armando Trovajoli, "Dolce Notte" by Luigi Zito, and "Policeman" by Tito Schipa & Giovanni Tommaso. VariousNippon Girls Vol 2 – Japanese Pop, Beat, & Rock & Roll 1965 to 1970 ... CD
Big Beat (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Mad sounds from the late 60s world of Japanese pop – a mindblowing, ear-opening batch of singles we never would have gotten our hands on otherwise! The music here feels like sounds coming out of some backroom jukebox in a Nikkatsu "new action" film – or maybe the kind of offbeat pop that Quentin Tarantino might throw into a soundtrack – but there's also a much deeper range of sounds going on than you might expect, with wonderfully clever instrumentation, and lots of surprisingly heartfelt passages in the vocals! And sure, the language might be a barrier – but there's a really universal sense of appeal to this music – a variant of 60s soul and pop, focused through a different sort of lense – and the instrumentation alone is great – with wicked guitars, Hammond, and other garagey touches! As usual with Ace, the whole thing's supported with nicely detailed notes that tell the whole story behind these wonderful lost gems (we like this one even better than the fab first volume) – and titles include "Namida No Go Go" by Emy Jackson & Blue Comets, "Koi Gurui" by Chiyo Okumura, "Tokyo No Hito" by The Peanuts, "Warui Kuse" by Kazumi Yasui, "Boy & Girl" by Akiko Wada, "Namida No Mori No Monogatari" by Akiko Nakamura, "Saike Na Machi" by Reiko Mari, "Bazazz No 1" by Kayoko Ishuu, and "Furi Furi 5" by Linda Yamamoto. ✨✧ Just-IceMasterpiece ... CD
Fresh/Traffic, 1990. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A later set by Just Ice – produced by Grandmaster Flash – and record that sounds a lot better than we remembered! Tight, hard hitting dawn of the 90s beats from Flash and that gruff, tight rhyme delivery from Just-Ice. It might not be a masterpiece on par with Kool & Deadly, but it's plenty tough to our ears after all these years. Includes "Get Into Something", "The Iceman Cometh", "Slow, Low & Dope", "Rollin With The Just", and "I Write This In The Dark" with Angie B of The Sequence, known today as Angie Stone! CD
