Comet Is ComingAfterlife ... CD
Universal (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $9.99
A brilliant blast from The Comet Is Coming – their second album on Impulse in less than a year – and it's as exciting as anything they've done so far! Their core vibe of mixing spiritual jazz with electronic experimentation is here in full force, but they take it new directions. While the trio carries the influences from 70s spacey fusion influences and modern London jazz on the other, it always feels fully unique and of their own invention. Part of what's so exciting is they can strip things down to minimalist vibe of melodic sax, spare drums and bubbling electronics to far-reaching jazz funk from one track to the next – this is trio with range! Poet Joshua Idehen delivers a righteous vocal on the opener "All That Matters Is The Moments" that sets the stage for the soaring ride that follows, including "The Softness Of The Present", "The Afterlife", "Lifeforce Part I", "Lifeforce Part II" and "The Seven Planetary Heavens". Comet Is ComingChannel The Spirits (with bonus download) ... LP
Leaf (UK), 2016. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
The amazing first full length set of Comet Is Coming – one of the boldest statements from the London jazz scene in recent years – and a brilliant blend of live jazz instrumentation and electronics! Shabaka Hutchings – as King Shabaka – is in the group on tenor, which he blows with this strongly spiritual quality – really reaching out as this organic core amidst some of the spacier, noisier touches – all of which never get too far-out, and which are just balanced enough to effect the cosmic journey that's always been the group's promise! Drums are nice and heavy too, and the whole thing has this fantastic vibe that's as immediately appealing as it is completely unique – which you'll hear on tunes that include "Space Carnival", "The Prophecy", "Channel The Spirits", "Deep Within The Engine Deck", and "Journey Through The Asteroid Belt". Comet Is ComingTrust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery ... LP
Impulse, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99
A fantastic blend of spiritual jazz styles and electronic elements – served up here by the trio of drummer Betamax, keyboardist Danalogue, and saxophonist King Shabaka – the last of whom you might recognize as Shabaka Hutchings from a host of other hip projects on the contemporary London scene! Shabaka's work on tenor and bass clarinet really gives the record an earthy, organic core – which seems to let the keyboards really soar off into space, often with the sort of vibe that you'd guess from the group's name and the cover image on the record – in a wide flurry of live and amplified performance elements! At some level, the trio is almost London's answer to some of the jazz-meets-studio work from Chicago's International Anthem label – and like some of the groups who record for that imprint, these guys are all strong jazz musicians at the core – but performing at a level that's very beyond the ordinary. Titles include "Birth Of Creation", "Summon The Fire", "Blood Of The Past", "Astral Flying", "Super Zodiac", "The Universe Wakes Up", and "Timewave Zero". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantastic sounds from Comet Is Coming – a record as heady as you might guess from its cover image! These guys have a really revolutionary way of combining jazz and electronics –using the latter at a way that never sacrifices the former – especially when you've got such great drums at the core, and searing, spiritual tenor solos from King Shabaka over the top! This EP definitely has more beats and rhythms than some of their other records, but still has plenty of jazz at the core – and in a way, it's almost like Comet Is Coming finds a way to bridge the current London jazz generation with the decades-back club scene that was always claiming to be influenced by jazz, but never did things this well! Titles include "March Of The Rising Sun", "Ascension", "Start Running", and "Final Eclipse (full version)". LP, Vinyl record album

A prophetic blast of modern jazz from Comet Is Coming – one of the strongest and most original jazz trios from London or anywhere else in quite a while! There's a taut, propulsive bent to this early EP by the group that hints strongly at their soaring spiritual space jazz to come – making expansive use of a tight tenor sax, drums an brilliantly spacey synth and keys set up that hits hard and heavy while making it clear that the sky is no limit at all. Really strong stuff we're thrilled to finally have a hold on! ✨✧ Tony Allen & Afrika 70Jealousy ... LP
Comet (France), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
The start of a legend – the tremendous debut of drummer Tony Allen as a leader, after some key 70s work in the group of Fela Kuti! Fela's group is backing Tony up here – the key Afrika 70 lineup – and even Fela gets in on the action by laying down some piano solos and tenor – key proof that he had plenty of faith in Tony going out on his own! And heck, Fela even produced the record, and helped Allen with arrangements on his tunes – two side-long jammers that really live up to any expectations you might have, and which make the Afrika 70 legend proud – "Jealousy" and "Hustler". ✨✧ Tony Allen & Afrika 70Progress ... LP
Comet (France), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
An Afro Funk classic – killer solo work from Tony Allen – originally known as the drummer for Fela during his key years – stepping out here on his own with the Afrika 70 band! The album's a monster all the way through – every bit as great as any of Fela's 70s classics, but handled with a weird twist, too – the kind of offbeat groove we've come to love from Allen's revival of the past decade – laid out here in a wonderful groove that's very drum-heavy on the bottom! The album's only got two long tracks – "Progress" and "Afro Disco Beat" – but each runs for a side apiece, which makes for plenty of funky changes! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Henri GuedonHenri Guedon – Early Latin & Boogaloo Recordings By The Drum Master ... CD
Comet (France), 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Prepare to have your mind blown – and discover a whole new genre of funky grooves! Henri "Kike" Guedon was a French West Indian percussionist who recorded in both Paris and New York – crafting a really unique style that brought together American, Caribbean, and Parisian takes on more traditional Afro-Cuban sounds! Guedon puts his bongo work right up in the front of the mix – giving the tunes a crackling percussive-heavy drive from the get-go, and smoking up the rhythms with a style that's even more compelling than 70s New York salsa. Most tracks feature vocals, heavy horns, and a really full-on groove that reminds us of the best of Fania at the time – yet which also crackles with lots of interesting cross-cultural references as well! Titles include "Guajira Contestacion", "Shiga Swing", "Faut Pas Pousser", "Ritmo Moderno", "Los Antillanos De Paris", and "Brujeira". CD

✨✧ Ji MobDirector's Cut ... CD
Comet (France), 2007. Used ... Out Of Stock
A cool little project – one that features jazzy grooves inspired by classic films – all played by a French combo with a very hip lineup! The group's led by flute player Ji Dru – who plays both conventional and African variations on the instrument – with other instrumentation that includes Fender Rhodes, guitar, bass, and percussion – plus occasional added bits of horns. A number of cuts feature vocals – a bit by Dru, the rest from Sandra Nkake – but these aren't often used with typical song structures, and instead have a feel that's a bit more instrumental – layered in with the rest of the music in a very cinematic way. The overall feel is a mixture of jazz and soundtrack elements, with some slight African touches – and titles include "Ferdinand", "Shaolin No 13", "Saya", "The Queen", "Motorcycle Boy", "The River", "Screaming", and "Homesteader". The first full length set from a group we love for their earlier singles on Comet Records – and who step out here with a well-crafted approach to dancefloor Brazilian! Nutropic have a soulful sensibility that goes way beyond simple bossa remix tricks – a style that balances Brazilian rhythms with some warmer soul-based touches – almost in the mode of the first few singles by Mr Hermano, but often with a gentler groove and a nice use of jazz from time to time. Vocals are especially strong – sung by Fernanda Porto, Anna Torres, and Allen Hoist – and lots of the tracks have excellent keyboards that really round out the sound. Titles include "Leva E Traz", "Suave", "Galeao 70", "Sambador", "Voce Sabe", "Eastern Soul", "Saudade De Um Grande Amor", "Papa Songo", and "Pascalito's Theme". CD

A never-issued album from Italian composer Giuliano Sorgini – and one that's very much in the best spirit of some of his better-known sound library albums from the 70s! Like some of those, Sorgini does a great job here of balancing more experimental modes with more familiar ones – using lots of electronics and processing to certainly evoke the sounds from space promised by the title – but often with a sense of humanity that comes through in some weird wordless vocal passages, occasional earth-bound sound effects, or other more familiar instrumental touches – including a bit of strings, which are oddly welcome next to the electronic elements. Titles include "Lunar Walk", "UFO", "Upwards", "Into The Space Immensity", "Sweet Trance", "Death Of A Comet", and "Man In The Space". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousNew Horizons – A Bristol Jazz Sound (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Worm Discs (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $22.99
A great little collection that seeks to put the Bristol scene on the map – and to show the kind of inventive jazz the city's been offering up in recent years! The compilers aim to demonstrate that Bristol has as many newly-creative acts as the sort that have been bubbling up in London on labels like Brownswood – and the range of material here really shows a similar way of blending newer ideas and older execution – especially strong in the rhythm department, and with an effortless mixing of acoustic and electric modes. If you've been digging sounds from Comet Is Coming, Nubya Garcia, and Joe Armon-Jones, this set is a great place to take that interest further – on work that includes "Bergson" and "Jabba" by Waldo's Gift, "3.3 Encke Ups" and "Sea Of Apathy & Indifference" by Run Logan Run, "Flump (Ishamel Ensemble rework)" and "Grook" by Snazzback, "Owl" by Lyrebird, and "Bourdain" by Alun Elliott Williams. VariousReal Thing ... CD
Mind (France), 2005. Used Gatefold ... $4.99
A really unusual set of grooves from the minds of Mind Records – a new Comet Records offshoot! The vibe here is very similar to some of the recent work from Comet – like albums by Doctor L, Psyco On Da Bus, or Rare Moods – all of whom make an appearance on the set, and share enough members to give the collection a really unified sound! Much of the work is in the messed-up, highly rhythmic mode we've come to love from Comet – a sound that's got its roots in older grooves of the 70s, and which is influenced by a range of styles from around the globe – but which has somehow managed to make them fit all within the quirkier fringes of the current Paris scene! Titles include "Freaky Habbits" by Da Linck, "Help From My Brothers" by Psyco, "What Have You Got To Give" by Doctor L, "Gwotet (Rare Moods rework)" by David Murray and The Gwo-Ka Masters, "5 Days Long" by Broken & Dom Farkas, "Mis America (Doctor L rework)" by Drugs, "Walk On" by Not Your Frequency, and "Dark Soul" by Broken. Finders Keepers (UK), 1982. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The Moomins comics have delighted the world for generations – but fewer folks have seen the early 80s Moomins TV show – which is a masterpiece of felt-based, stop-motion animation! And while the images on the screen are amazing, the music for the program is equally great – spare, slow electronic numbers that have a beautifully playful vibe, but something of a dark edge too – maybe much more in the mode of more whimsical underground electronic work from the early 70s than you'd guess from the date of the show! The program was animated in Poland, and some of these tunes have a style that's similar to the coolest Polish electronic sound library material we've stocked over the years – although the musicians themselves were actually part of the post punk scene in Leeds. Jerry ButlerIce Man Cometh (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Mercury/Elemental (Spain), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99
Amazing soul from one of the greats of the 60s! This album was one of the first that Jerry cut for Mercury – where he'd begun working with the young team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff to completely rework the earlier sound he'd forged at Vee Jay Records. The album's still got Jerry singing in his wonderfully rich deep voice – hence the "iceman" in the title – but the songs have a bit more of a groove to them, with a soaring soul style that really lifts Jerry up, and pushes him onto a whole new generation of soul fans. The best proof of this are the hits "Hey Western Union Man" and "Never Give You Up" – but the whole album's great, and like most of Jerry's LPs, it's got many wonderful tunes hiding underneath the hits. Titles include "How Can I Get In Touch With You", "Can't Forget About You Baby", "Are You Happy", and "Go Away Find Yourself" – as well as other hits like "Lost" and "Only The Strong Survive". CEM (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the coolest albums ever from the legendary Cometa sound library – a set that's every bit as weird and wonderful as you'd guess from its cover image of a hand holding a flower with eyeballs on each petal! The music's maybe not as trippy as that picture, but it does have lots of cool and groovy touches – sweet Fender Rhodes at some points, jazzy reeds at others, and even some more evocative passages that almost have a deeper soundtrack vibe – but which soon return to the kind of tight, funky numbers that we love so much in Italian sound library material from this time! The players aren't named, but they're clearly top-shelf talents from the scene – and tracks include the funky "Rash", plus "Riddle", "Happy Fire", "Swallow", "Canty", "Diplomat", "Gadder", "Bike", and "Daydream". The music here is in a mid 70s funky soundtrack style – grooves that take off from American blacksploitation elements by mixing funky bottoms with fuller strings, often laced together with heavy basslines or wah wah guitar – with more than enough room for keyboards to soar over the top! Guido & Maurizio De AngelisLa Montagana Del Dio Cannibale/Messalina Messalina ... CD
Cometa (Italy), 1977/1978. New Copy ... $18.99
A pair of thrilling 70s action scores – back to back on a single CD! First up is La Montagna Del Dio Cannibale – a cannibal narrative scored with a great sense of drama by the De Angelis brothers – almost the same energy as their cop/crime work, but without the funk – just full, rich sounds that really build over time, and create this strong feeling of suspense! There's a few exotic elements in the music, given the setting – and these make for some slight hint of a groove – and titles include "Visioni Distorte", "Marcia Allucinante", "La Montagana E Il Mistero", "Ipnosi Tragica", and "Il Dio Cannibale". Messalina Messalina has an older Roman setting, and a relatively sexy narrative – and the music is scored with a mix of percussion, light flute, and some slinky electric basslines – of that great sort that was often used to convey sex in 70s Euro cinema! Some of the melodies are playful, others more erotic – and titles include "Notti Romane", "Danzatrici", "Incontro D'Amore", "Un Piacevole Addio", "Messalina", and "Ballata Burlona". CD

Rita LeeAtras Do Porto Tem Uma Cidade ... CD
Polydor (Brazil), 1974. New Copy ... $9.99
A wild solo project from Rita Lee – done after the breakup of Os Mutantes, and offered up almost as some sort of commentary on mainstream rock in the 70s! There's a much more straightforward approach to the music here – a sometimes-glammy sound that's echoed by the band's space-style costumes and makeup – but there's also some weirdly old-style rock instrumentation too, almost like the way that an artist like Gary Glitter could fold the 50s and 70s together in his music, and come across making something very weird and new. Here, the keyboards are almost stronger than the guitars – and Rita herself plays moog, melotron, organ, and piano – on titles that include "Tem Uma Cidade", "Menino Bonito", "Mame Natureza", and "Eclipse Do Cometa". A massive slice of music from percussionist Chano Pozo – best known as the guy who helped forge the mix of bebop and Latin that became known as cubop in the 40s – but also a hell of a musician in his own right too! The set brings together work from a wealth of early 78rpm singles – both cubop material that Pozo recorded with Dizzy Gillespie, James Moody, and others – plus earlier straighter Latin work, with artists from both the New York and Havana scene! There's been some great CD issues of Chano's music from the time, but the package may be the first LP set to really do things justice – and features a total of 28 tracks that all feature Chano Pozo on percussion – titles that include "El Pin Pin" by Cascarita, "Guaguina Yerabo" by Miguelito Valdes, "Paran Pan Pin" by Panchito, "No Se Que Tienes" by Olga Guillot, "Seven Seven" by Chano Pozo, "Cubana Be" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Rumba En Swing" by Chano Pozo, "Tin Tin Deo" by James Moody, "Boco Boco" by Tito Rodriguez, "Manteca" by Dizzy Gillespie, "Cometelo To" by Chano Pozo, "Llora" by Cascarita, "Nague" by Miguelito Valdes, "Amparame" by Reinaldo Valdes, "Paran Pin Pin" by Panchito Riset, and "Conga De Los Dandy" by Orquesta Hotel Nacional. Voices of Walter SchumannExploring the Unknown ... LP
RCA, 1955. Very Good ... $36.99
One of the postwar space-age classics! The normally-sleepy chorus of Walter Schumann is used to create the backdrop for a narrative of space flight – read by Paul Frees, and involving the takeoff of a rocket from the Pacific, soaring into space, past the moon, and arriving on Venus. The voices drift in and out of the mix, louder and softer while Frees reads from the script for the album. The orchestrations are by Leith Stevens, best known for his jazzy soundtrack work, but sounding pretty great here, and providing a perfect spooky accompaniment to the voices and reading. Titles include "Space Station", "New Frontiers", "Arrival At Venus", "Teleportation", "The Comets", and "Regions Of Other Suns". LP, Vinyl record album

Cometa (Italy), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A record that definitely lives up to its title – an obscure Italian sound library session that blends instrumental touches that evoke an America at the start of the 70s with some of the hipper, deeper currents you'd expect from the team of Stefano Torossi and Giovanni Tomasso! There's plenty of expected sound library funk in the mix here – but there's also bits of banjo, harmonica, and acoustic guitar – all used sparely, but in a way that paints "America" on some of the groovier cuts here – in a way that makes for one of the most unique sound library sessions we've ever heard! Plus, the book comes with some nicely hokey notes about our nation, and some nice vintage photos – including images of a hippie wrapped in a flag in a hammock, and a confederate soldier loading a canon. Titles include "Black Power", "Policeman", "Fake It", "Six Miles From Blackstook", "Slateridge Sunday Breakdown", "Harlem Jungle", and "Metropolis". LP, Vinyl record album

Fresh/Traffic, 1990. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A later set by Just Ice – produced by Grandmaster Flash – and record that sounds a lot better than we remembered! Tight, hard hitting dawn of the 90s beats from Flash and that gruff, tight rhyme delivery from Just-Ice. It might not be a masterpiece on par with Kool & Deadly, but it's plenty tough to our ears after all these years. Includes "Get Into Something", "The Iceman Cometh", "Slow, Low & Dope", "Rollin With The Just", and "I Write This In The Dark" with Angie B of The Sequence, known today as Angie Stone! CD

✨✧ VariousNippon Girls Vol 2 – Japanese Pop, Beat, & Rock & Roll 1965 to 1970 ... CD
Big Beat (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Mad sounds from the late 60s world of Japanese pop – a mindblowing, ear-opening batch of singles we never would have gotten our hands on otherwise! The music here feels like sounds coming out of some backroom jukebox in a Nikkatsu "new action" film – or maybe the kind of offbeat pop that Quentin Tarantino might throw into a soundtrack – but there's also a much deeper range of sounds going on than you might expect, with wonderfully clever instrumentation, and lots of surprisingly heartfelt passages in the vocals! And sure, the language might be a barrier – but there's a really universal sense of appeal to this music – a variant of 60s soul and pop, focused through a different sort of lense – and the instrumentation alone is great – with wicked guitars, Hammond, and other garagey touches! As usual with Ace, the whole thing's supported with nicely detailed notes that tell the whole story behind these wonderful lost gems (we like this one even better than the fab first volume) – and titles include "Namida No Go Go" by Emy Jackson & Blue Comets, "Koi Gurui" by Chiyo Okumura, "Tokyo No Hito" by The Peanuts, "Warui Kuse" by Kazumi Yasui, "Boy & Girl" by Akiko Wada, "Namida No Mori No Monogatari" by Akiko Nakamura, "Saike Na Machi" by Reiko Mari, "Bazazz No 1" by Kayoko Ishuu, and "Furi Furi 5" by Linda Yamamoto. ✨✧ Gruppo Improvvisazione Nuova ConsonanzaEroina (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Cometa (Italy), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Rare work from this legendary Italian improvisational group – a lineup that features famous modernists Mario Bertoncini, Egisto Macchi, and Walter Bianchi – as well as soundtrack genius Ennio Morricone! The sounds are quite dark and abstract – often somewhere out in the space of Morricone's more atonal soundtracks from the early 70s, but even looser overall – as you can feel the improvisational energy of the players coming together – feeling out space between spare percussion, strings, and horns. The record actually has one famous funky number – "Haschich", which has this amazing break underneath some off-tuned sitar and other odd noises – but most other tracks are much darker and more outside. Other titles include "Orgasmo", "Eroina", "Aghi", "Warum", "Raptus", and "Stridori" – plus another take on "Haschich". LP, Vinyl record album
