Comet Is ComingAfterlife ... CD
Universal (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $9.99
A brilliant blast from The Comet Is Coming – their second album on Impulse in less than a year – and it's as exciting as anything they've done so far! Their core vibe of mixing spiritual jazz with electronic experimentation is here in full force, but they take it new directions. While the trio carries the influences from 70s spacey fusion influences and modern London jazz on the other, it always feels fully unique and of their own invention. Part of what's so exciting is they can strip things down to minimalist vibe of melodic sax, spare drums and bubbling electronics to far-reaching jazz funk from one track to the next – this is trio with range! Poet Joshua Idehen delivers a righteous vocal on the opener "All That Matters Is The Moments" that sets the stage for the soaring ride that follows, including "The Softness Of The Present", "The Afterlife", "Lifeforce Part I", "Lifeforce Part II" and "The Seven Planetary Heavens". ✨✧ Comet Is ComingChannel The Spirits (special edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Leaf (UK), 2016. New Copy 2CD ... $13.99 14.99
The amazing first full length set of Comet Is Coming – one of the boldest statements from the London jazz scene in recent years – and a brilliant blend of live jazz instrumentation and electronics! Shabaka Hutchings – as King Shabaka – is in the group on tenor, which he blows with this strongly spiritual quality – really reaching out as this organic core amidst some of the spacier, noisier touches – all of which never get too far-out, and which are just balanced enough to effect the cosmic journey that's always been the group's promise! Drums are nice and heavy too, and the whole thing has this fantastic vibe that's as immediately appealing as it is completely unique – which you'll hear on tunes that include "Space Carnival", "The Prophecy", "Channel The Spirits", "Deep Within The Engine Deck", and "Journey Through The Asteroid Belt". As a bonus, the 2CD edition also features their debut Prophecy EP – plus unheard tracks titled Ancient Tapes – "Slammin", "Transmission", and "Closing Credits". CD

A really full-on track from Comet Is Coming – a cut that has all the cosmic touches of their other work, but which also features vocals from Joshua Idehen – who's got this dark, bold vibe that really seems to send the group over the top! The cut may well be the most sonically intense track we've ever heard from Comet – and it's backed by a remix of "Super Zodiac" on the flipside! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Comet Is ComingTrust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery ... CD
Impulse, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic blend of spiritual jazz styles and electronic elements – served up here by the trio of drummer Betamax, keyboardist Danalogue, and saxophonist King Shabaka – the last of whom you might recognize as Shabaka Hutchings from a host of other hip projects on the contemporary London scene! Shabaka's work on tenor and bass clarinet really gives the record an earthy, organic core – which seems to let the keyboards really soar off into space, often with the sort of vibe that you'd guess from the group's name and the cover image on the record – in a wide flurry of live and amplified performance elements! At some level, the trio is almost London's answer to some of the jazz-meets-studio work from Chicago's International Anthem label – and like some of the groups who record for that imprint, these guys are all strong jazz musicians at the core – but performing at a level that's very beyond the ordinary. Titles include "Birth Of Creation", "Summon The Fire", "Blood Of The Past", "Astral Flying", "Super Zodiac", "The Universe Wakes Up", and "Timewave Zero". CD

Brighter DaysBrighter Days ... CD
Comet (France), 2008. Used ... $5.99
A bit of jazz and a bit of beats – a collaboration between saxophonist Julien Lourau and beatmaker Jeff Sharel – coming together here with a chunky sort of groove that's plenty darn appealing! There's a pulsating energy to most of the numbers here – kind of a bottom-up way of making a groove, so that the tracks feel almost like they're floating along on waves of sound – almost a pastiche of elements, but one that always sorts itself out with a rhythmic drive forward. And while there's probably more beats than saxophone, the album also features Fender Rhodes, cello, and violin as well – plus some occasional murky vocals. Titles include "Superman 1", "Toufe Yen Yen", "Cotton Fields", "Mix & Mingle", "Sax Machine", "Em Carne Viva", "Gypsy Woman", "Little Soldier", and "Tatuagem". CD

✨✧ Tony Allen & Afrika 70Jealousy ... LP
Comet (France), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The start of a legend – the tremendous debut of drummer Tony Allen as a leader, after some key 70s work in the group of Fela Kuti! Fela's group is backing Tony up here – the key Afrika 70 lineup – and even Fela gets in on the action by laying down some piano solos and tenor – key proof that he had plenty of faith in Tony going out on his own! And heck, Fela even produced the record, and helped Allen with arrangements on his tunes – two side-long jammers that really live up to any expectations you might have, and which make the Afrika 70 legend proud – "Jealousy" and "Hustler". ✨✧ Tony Allen & Afrika 70Progress ... LP
Comet (France), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
An Afro Funk classic – killer solo work from Tony Allen – originally known as the drummer for Fela during his key years – stepping out here on his own with the Afrika 70 band! The album's a monster all the way through – every bit as great as any of Fela's 70s classics, but handled with a weird twist, too – the kind of offbeat groove we've come to love from Allen's revival of the past decade – laid out here in a wonderful groove that's very drum-heavy on the bottom! The album's only got two long tracks – "Progress" and "Afro Disco Beat" – but each runs for a side apiece, which makes for plenty of funky changes! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousBilongo – A Third Collection Of Modern Afro Rhythms ... CD
Comet (France), 1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
This series just keeps on getting better and better! This is the third volume in the set that began with Racubah, continued with Oulelele, and which comes up this time with a fantastic array of rare African funk tunes from the 70s – rarer than any other set we've seen on other compilations of this sort, and sure to keep things interesting for folks who've already bought all their Fela and Manu Dibango albums. Nearly every cut on here is from the 70s – and most are from rare French sources of the type that you'd probably never find, even if you spent your Saturdays digging around flea markets in Paris (and believe us, we've tried that!) The grooves are incredible, and tracks include "Je Suis Un Sauvage" by Alfred Panou & The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, issued originally only on a Saravah 7" single; "A Coltrane", by the French saxophonist Richard Raux; "Bilongo", from Antillian percussionist Henri Guedon; "Woza Cindi", by South African jazz group Julian Bahula's Jazz Afrika; "Zombi", a French 70s club version of the Fela tune, recorded by Ephraim Nzeka – and the tracks "La Danse Des Grands Singes Nus" by Les Dums, "Make It Funky" by Roots Foundation, "Welcome New Warmth" by Michel Sardaby, and "Meci Bon Dieu" by Georges Edouard Nouel. Comet (France), 2001. Used ... Out Of Stock
Darkly beautiful work from Art Konik – a mixture of jazz samples and acoustic playing on piano, percussion, sax, and occasional other instrumentation. The overall feel is similar to some of the recent work on French Blue Note – but with less of a house base, and more of a serious compositional approach overall. Bobby Few guest stars on bass on one track – and titles include "Afro Monkey", "Mingpark", "La Miche", "New York", "Finger", and "Clap". CD

Eric SidayUltra Sonic Perception ... LP
Dual Planet (Australia), Early 60s. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $19.99
Very early electronic sound library material from Eric Siday – so much so, that all these tracks were originally issued as 78rpm singles – at a time before the sound library scene moved into using full LPs! A number of cuts here were used as early passages on the first Doctor Who episodes – and others follow nicely in a similar vein – with very bold, powerful explorations of the earliest elements of analogue electronics – and an especially strong ear for the darker side of the spectrum! Most numbers here are never too noisy – not as much so as avant compositional work of the time – but they hang on the edge in a really great way, creating a lot of stark spacey elements with just a few deft touches. Titles include "Comet", "Ultimate", "Moonscape", "Galaxy", "Suspended Animation", "The Machines", "Pavane", "Pizzicato Piano", "Challenge Of Space", and "Eclipse". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Soul AscendantsVariations ... CD
Nuphonic (UK), 1999. Used ... $2.99
Funky afro house! This excellent new group take afro funk rhythms of the 70s, and house the whole thing up with lots of samples and sequencers – creating a hard heavy groove that's perfect for today's dancefloors, yet which is also filled with all the soul and power of older releases. It's no surprise that they've got Tony Allen helping them out on a few tracks – especially since some of the record (but not all of it) feels like Allen's recent work on the Comet label. Other tracks have an excellent deep house feel, and the record's a key place to see the link between the repetitive acoustic percussion of 70s Afro Funk and the later grooves of 80s house. 9 tracks in all – and titles include "Tribute", "Secret Agent", "String Thing", "Celebrate", "Makora", and "Safe Is The Place". Radio Loop Loop (UK), 1975. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
That's a mid-70s photo of Kraftwerk on the cover – and the record features a great live set recorded right after their legendary Autobahn album – done with a similar long, sprawling vibe – but with a different feel than in the studio! Side one features a version of "Autobahn", structurally similar to the record, but with sharper edges and much more of a sense of darkness that hints at the earlier sound of the group – and the flipside follows with equally edgey takes on two shorter tunes – the amazing flute-riffing "Ruckzuck", and the nicely spacey "Kometemelodie" – which is the record we always promise to put on when a comet is threatening impact with our planet! ✨✧ VariousNew Horizons – A Bristol Jazz Sound (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Worm Discs (UK), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A great little collection that seeks to put the Bristol scene on the map – and to show the kind of inventive jazz the city's been offering up in recent years! The compilers aim to demonstrate that Bristol has as many newly-creative acts as the sort that have been bubbling up in London on labels like Brownswood – and the range of material here really shows a similar way of blending newer ideas and older execution – especially strong in the rhythm department, and with an effortless mixing of acoustic and electric modes. If you've been digging sounds from Comet Is Coming, Nubya Garcia, and Joe Armon-Jones, this set is a great place to take that interest further – on work that includes "Bergson" and "Jabba" by Waldo's Gift, "3.3 Encke Ups" and "Sea Of Apathy & Indifference" by Run Logan Run, "Flump (Ishamel Ensemble rework)" and "Grook" by Snazzback, "Owl" by Lyrebird, and "Bourdain" by Alun Elliott Williams. Sonor/Musica Per Immagini (Italy), 1973. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A never-issued album from Italian composer Giuliano Sorgini – and one that's very much in the best spirit of some of his better-known sound library albums from the 70s! Like some of those, Sorgini does a great job here of balancing more experimental modes with more familiar ones – using lots of electronics and processing to certainly evoke the sounds from space promised by the title – but often with a sense of humanity that comes through in some weird wordless vocal passages, occasional earth-bound sound effects, or other more familiar instrumental touches – including a bit of strings, which are oddly welcome next to the electronic elements. Titles include "Lunar Walk", "UFO", "Upwards", "Into The Space Immensity", "Sweet Trance", "Death Of A Comet", and "Man In The Space". LP, Vinyl record album

Orchestra CometaDaydream – Musica Di Mirot-Stepchild-Lash ... LP
CEM (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $39.99
One of the coolest albums ever from the legendary Cometa sound library – a set that's every bit as weird and wonderful as you'd guess from its cover image of a hand holding a flower with eyeballs on each petal! The music's maybe not as trippy as that picture, but it does have lots of cool and groovy touches – sweet Fender Rhodes at some points, jazzy reeds at others, and even some more evocative passages that almost have a deeper soundtrack vibe – but which soon return to the kind of tight, funky numbers that we love so much in Italian sound library material from this time! The players aren't named, but they're clearly top-shelf talents from the scene – and tracks include the funky "Rash", plus "Riddle", "Happy Fire", "Swallow", "Canty", "Diplomat", "Gadder", "Bike", and "Daydream". One of the hardest rocking albums ever cut by Os Mutantes – a record that's got a slightly ironic take on rock and roll styles of the time – still performed with the sense of drama and humor that always made the band so great! Rita Lee and Arnaldo Baptista are still in the group at this point, and they're working amidst a heavy wave of guitars that echo out with a bit of keyboards and some rhythms that are chunky enough to almost be called funky at times, but sweet and dreamy at others – all produced with a flanged-out finish that makes the whole thing sound great! Titles include "Balada Do Louco", "Todo Mundo Pastou II", "Cantor De Mambo", "Dune Buggy", "Rua Augusta", and "Posso Perder Minha Mulher, Minha Mae, Desde Que Eu Tenha, O Rock and Roll". CD

✨✧ Jerry ButlerIce Man Cometh ... CD
Mercury/Intermusic (Spain), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Amazing soul from one of the greats of the 60s! This album was one of the first that Jerry cut for Mercury – where he'd begun working with the young team of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff to completely rework the earlier sound he'd forged at Vee Jay Records. The album's still got Jerry singing in his wonderfully rich deep voice – hence the "iceman" in the title – but the songs have a bit more of a groove to them, with a soaring soul style that really lifts Jerry up, and pushes him onto a whole new generation of soul fans. The best proof of this are the hits "Hey Western Union Man" and "Never Give You Up" – but the whole album's great, and like most of Jerry's LPs, it's got many wonderful tunes hiding underneath the hits. Titles include "How Can I Get In Touch With You", "Can't Forget About You Baby", "Are You Happy", and "Go Away Find Yourself" – as well as other hits like "Lost" and "Only The Strong Survive". CD

The music here is in a mid 70s funky soundtrack style – grooves that take off from American blacksploitation elements by mixing funky bottoms with fuller strings, often laced together with heavy basslines or wah wah guitar – with more than enough room for keyboards to soar over the top! Guido & Maurizio De AngelisLa Montagana Del Dio Cannibale/Messalina Messalina ... CD
Cometa (Italy), 1977/1978. New Copy ... $18.99
A pair of thrilling 70s action scores – back to back on a single CD! First up is La Montagna Del Dio Cannibale – a cannibal narrative scored with a great sense of drama by the De Angelis brothers – almost the same energy as their cop/crime work, but without the funk – just full, rich sounds that really build over time, and create this strong feeling of suspense! There's a few exotic elements in the music, given the setting – and these make for some slight hint of a groove – and titles include "Visioni Distorte", "Marcia Allucinante", "La Montagana E Il Mistero", "Ipnosi Tragica", and "Il Dio Cannibale". Messalina Messalina has an older Roman setting, and a relatively sexy narrative – and the music is scored with a mix of percussion, light flute, and some slinky electric basslines – of that great sort that was often used to convey sex in 70s Euro cinema! Some of the melodies are playful, others more erotic – and titles include "Notti Romane", "Danzatrici", "Incontro D'Amore", "Un Piacevole Addio", "Messalina", and "Ballata Burlona". CD

Rita LeeAtras Do Porto Tem Uma Cidade ... CD
Polydor (Brazil), 1974. New Copy ... $9.99
A wild solo project from Rita Lee – done after the breakup of Os Mutantes, and offered up almost as some sort of commentary on mainstream rock in the 70s! There's a much more straightforward approach to the music here – a sometimes-glammy sound that's echoed by the band's space-style costumes and makeup – but there's also some weirdly old-style rock instrumentation too, almost like the way that an artist like Gary Glitter could fold the 50s and 70s together in his music, and come across making something very weird and new. Here, the keyboards are almost stronger than the guitars – and Rita herself plays moog, melotron, organ, and piano – on titles that include "Tem Uma Cidade", "Menino Bonito", "Mame Natureza", and "Eclipse Do Cometa". Cometa (Italy), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A record that definitely lives up to its title – an obscure Italian sound library session that blends instrumental touches that evoke an America at the start of the 70s with some of the hipper, deeper currents you'd expect from the team of Stefano Torossi and Giovanni Tomasso! There's plenty of expected sound library funk in the mix here – but there's also bits of banjo, harmonica, and acoustic guitar – all used sparely, but in a way that paints "America" on some of the groovier cuts here – in a way that makes for one of the most unique sound library sessions we've ever heard! Plus, the book comes with some nicely hokey notes about our nation, and some nice vintage photos – including images of a hippie wrapped in a flag in a hammock, and a confederate soldier loading a canon. Big Beat (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Mad sounds from the late 60s world of Japanese pop – a mindblowing, ear-opening batch of singles we never would have gotten our hands on otherwise! The music here feels like sounds coming out of some backroom jukebox in a Nikkatsu "new action" film – or maybe the kind of offbeat pop that Quentin Tarantino might throw into a soundtrack – but there's also a much deeper range of sounds going on than you might expect, with wonderfully clever instrumentation, and lots of surprisingly heartfelt passages in the vocals! And sure, the language might be a barrier – but there's a really universal sense of appeal to this music – a variant of 60s soul and pop, focused through a different sort of lense – and the instrumentation alone is great – with wicked guitars, Hammond, and other garagey touches! As usual with Ace, the whole thing's supported with nicely detailed notes that tell the whole story behind these wonderful lost gems (we like this one even better than the fab first volume) – and titles include "Namida No Go Go" by Emy Jackson & Blue Comets, "Koi Gurui" by Chiyo Okumura, "Tokyo No Hito" by The Peanuts, "Warui Kuse" by Kazumi Yasui, "Boy & Girl" by Akiko Wada, "Namida No Mori No Monogatari" by Akiko Nakamura, "Saike Na Machi" by Reiko Mari, "Bazazz No 1" by Kayoko Ishuu, and "Furi Furi 5" by Linda Yamamoto. The approach is great – leaner than some of Alessandroni's soundtrack material, and more direct too – with a vibe that's right upfront, as the tunes leap from sound to sound, style to style – but always in a nicely trippy version of instrumental funk. Titles include "Flautiana", "Invention", "Evolution", "Giovane Flirt", "Campeggiatori", "Arcipelago", "On The Boat", "Cielo Giallo", and "Acque Azzurre". LP, Vinyl record album

Cramps/RCA (Italy), 1975. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The cover image features a shot from the Festival of the Proletariat in 1974 – and the record's a great illustration of the way that Area could bridge both sides of the Italian scene at the time – offbeat and avant enough to get space on the Cramps label, but also able to hit some hard rock moments that could get the attention of the mainstream! Both sides of the group's strengths are in fine form here – in a live recording that has the group stretching out and jamming nicely – on titles that include the 15 minute jam "Areazione", a free jazz interpretation of "The International", and the tracks "Cometa Rossa", "La Mela Di Odessa", and "Luglio Agosto Settembre". ✨✧ Gruppo Improvvisazione Nuova ConsonanzaEroina (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Cometa (Italy), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Rare work from this legendary Italian improvisational group – a lineup that features famous modernists Mario Bertoncini, Egisto Macchi, and Walter Bianchi – as well as soundtrack genius Ennio Morricone! The sounds are quite dark and abstract – often somewhere out in the space of Morricone's more atonal soundtracks from the early 70s, but even looser overall – as you can feel the improvisational energy of the players coming together – feeling out space between spare percussion, strings, and horns. The record actually has one famous funky number – "Haschich", which has this amazing break underneath some off-tuned sitar and other odd noises – but most other tracks are much darker and more outside. Other titles include "Orgasmo", "Eroina", "Aghi", "Warum", "Raptus", and "Stridori" – plus another take on "Haschich". LP, Vinyl record album

Cometa/Gemelli (Italy), Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most obscure albums on the legendary Cometa sound library label, but one that sounds a lot like some of the best on the Italian imprint – including work by Alessandro Alessandroni – and that may be because Alessandroni made a few contributions to the record! The music follows off the best styles of Italian soundtrack music of the period – some groovy themes, some more slow and sensual – served up with a mix of sweet keyboard lines, bits of organ, guitar, and other instrumentation – used in ways that mix the jazzy with the sexy – all with a vividness that goes way beyond the image on the cover! Titles include "Pinacoteca", "Dolce Notte", "Andante Tranquillo", "Misterioso Suspence", "Meridione", "Inseguimento", and "All'Aria Aperta". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited edition clear vinyl pressing!)
