Cocteau TwinsGarlands ... LP
4AD (UK), 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 22.99
One of our most favorite albums from the Cocteau Twins – a set that's got this raw energy that maybe links the group much more closely to the post-punk generation than the later 4AD scene – but a record that definitely shows that the group were already very firmly in a space of their own! The basslines are stronger than a few years later, and they have this very moody quality, rumbling there at the bottom – while the guitars carve out all these fuzzy spaces along the side of the music, and the majestic vocals of Liz Fraser soar over the top. Titles include "Wax & Wane", "Blood Bitch", "Garlands", "The Hollow Men", "Shallow Then Halo", and "Blind Dumb Deaf". LP, Vinyl record album

Cocteau TwinsHead Over Heels ... LP
4AD (UK), 1983. Very Good ... $33.99
Seminal early work from The Cocteau Twins – the kind of record that made the group almost a genre unto themselves – even though so many later artists tried to copy their sound and style! The record is years ahead of its time, especially when you consider that it was produced in the post-punk generation, at a point when less was often more – which was definitely the case with the core contributions to the record, before they were fluffed out into this amazing candyfloss of sonic textures, beats, and the mindblowing vocals of Elizabeth Fraser! The sound is as dark and obtuse as the cover image, but also completely lovely too – surprisingly catchy, even when you can't figure out the lyrics. Titles include "Sugar Hiccup", "When Mama Was Moth", "Musette & Drums", "The Tinderbox", "In The Gold Dust Rush", and "Glass Candle Grenades". LP, Vinyl record album
(UK pressing with MPO etch, in the flat finish cover, with heavy inner sleeve! Vinyl has light surface marks from the old inner sleeve, but is nice and clean overall.)

Cocteau TwinsVictorialand ... LP
4AD (UK), 1987. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 22.99
A great shift in sound for the Cocteau Twins – a record that tones down the splashier drum machine parts that were such a key element in earlier records – in a way that almost makes the ethereal guitars and vocals feel pastoral at points, but never in mode that's sleepy at all! The set may be one of the most magnificent showcases ever for the sublime vocals of Liz Frazer – who soars, dips, turns, and flutters with effortless grace throughout – processed, but personal, and with qualities that really set this record apart from the rest of the 4AD pack! Titles include "How To Bring A Blush To the Snow", "Feet-Like Fins", "Whales Tales", "Oomingmak", "Little Spacey", "Throughout The Dark Months Of April & May", and "Fluffy Tufts". ✨✧ Cocteau TwinsTreasure ... LP
4AD (UK), 1984. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
Cocteau Twins at the height of their powers – really honing in on that special blend of sounds that made their music so unique – while also finding a way to be even more tuneful than before! If you know the group, you'll know that their lyrics are always a bit obtuse, especially at this point in their career – but the amazing voice of Liz Fraser is so beautiful, and such a great contrast to the darker instrumental elements, there's an immediately uplifting feel to the tunes. The other great thing is the way that these guys dance right on the fringes of so many elements that could crush their music with pretension, yet never fall into the traps of their copycats – which makes for a mighty classic album throughout. Titles include "Otterley", "Donimo", "Amelia", "Beatrix", "Persephone", and "Pandora". LP, Vinyl record album
(UK pressing with Townhouse/MPO etches. Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover is lightly wavy on the bottom.)

✨✧ Massive AttackMezzanine (2CD deluxe edition – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Virgin, 1998. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A heavier, darker prime era set from Massive Attack – and rightly remembered as a classic! The grooves are still really strong, but the trip hop pioneers are delving more deeply into a bass heavy dub trip with a deep, rumbling bottom running throughout the tracks and some distorted guitar and reverb drenched key and sample bits punctuating the cuts and moody vocals. Stunningly strong to this day – which is no mean feat given the rapid musical evolutions of the 90s onward! Includes "Angel", "Risingson", "Teardrop" (which features vocals by Cocteau Twin Elizabeth Fraser), "Inertia Creeps", "Exchange", "Dissolved Girl", "Man Next Door", "Black Milk", "Mezzanine" and "Group Four". 2CD set features a 20th Anniversary mix of the record – and a bonus CD with a Mezzanine Mad Professor selection of mixes – all handled by Mad Professor, with titles that include "Metal Banshee (Mad Professor mix one)", "Teardrop (Mazaruni dub one)", "Group Four (security forces dub)", "Wire (leaping dub)", "Inertia Creeps (floating on dubwise)", "Angel (angel dust)", "Exchange (mountain steppers dub)", and "Risingson (setting sun dub two)". ✨✧ This Mortal CoilIt'll End In Tears ... LP
4AD, 1984. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
It may end in tears, but it starts in genius – as This Mortal Coil was one of the strongest ideas to ever come from the 4AD label in the 80s – a way of reworking older songs from the legacy of rock and pop, but with the new voice that the label was creating at the time! There's plenty of currents here that resonate with music by Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance – but a presentation that's maybe even deeper overall – woven over a tapestry of tunes that include "Song To The Siren", "Kangaroo", "The Last Ray", "Barramundi", "Another Day", and "A Single Wish". LP, Vinyl record album
(Recent UK reissue. Shrinkwrap has some shop stickers.)
