ClusterCluster II (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Brain/Bureau B (Germany), 1972. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $30.99 34.99
Heady work from Cluster – a record that really helped set the tone for a whole generation of German experimentation! The sound here is incredibly dense – guitar and keyboard parts that are processed heavily, looped back on themselves, and sometimes supported by a bit of electronics – all at a level that's still quite fresh and free – never too jamming, nor too experimental for experiment's sake! There's an intrinsically rhythmic feel to the whole record – a cosmic pulse that ebbs and flows beautifully – and the whole thing still has a lot more of an edge than most of the later work from the team of Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius. The album was co-produced with Conny Plank – and titles include "Plas", "Im Suden", "Fur Dir Katz", "Georgel", "Live In Der Fabrik", and "Nabitte". LP, Vinyl record album
(50th anniversary pressing – hand-numbered limited edition of 1000 copies – on 180 gram vinyl!)

✨✧ ClusterZuckerzeit ... LP
Brain/Superior Viaduct, 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
A slightly sweeter version of Cluster than on previous records – a bit more focused, tuneful, and rhythmic – thanks to some great use of the "rhythmusmaschine"! Most numbers here have a slightly pulsating feel – one that really prefaces the electronic modes that would come from the UK at the end of the decade, especially the best work of the Sheffield scene. Cluster here show the way brilliantly – taking the longer jams of earlier years, and honing them down into simple melodies and rhythms – yet still delivered with a fair bit of edge throughout, and not nearly as much of the softness that would characterize later work by Moebius or Roedelius. Tracks include "Hollywood", "Caramel", "James", "Rote Riki", "Fotschi Tong", and "Marzipan". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ ClusterGrosses Wasser ... LP
Sky/Bureau B (Germany), 1979. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Beautiful spare electronics, art rock, and even a little bit of avant funk from the Cluster team of Rodelius & Moebius! Grosses Wasser is an underrated effort from a combo that's been consistently underappreciated – one of the non-Eno collaborations, and showing that Cluster is a formidable artistic force with and without the aforementioned genius. Most tracks start out on the spare tip and slowly build in mood – utilizing electronics and ambient atmosphere. It has some dark touches, but is playful at times, too, and this is a vital piece of the Cluster puzzle. featuring the tracks "Avanti", "Prothese", "Isodea", "Manchmal", and "Grosses Wasser". A fantastic dig through the music of Cluster – one that not only features some of their spacey minimal moments from Sky Records, but also includes some of their earliest sounds on Brain Records too! Producer/musician John McIntire's been influenced strongly by Cluster's music over the years – and here, he returns his love to the duo of Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Rodelius – by offering up his own edits of their tracks "Grosses Wasser", "In Ewigkeit", and "21 32" – alongside well-chosen classics that include "Hollywood", "The Shade", "Fur Die Katz", "Oh Odessa", and "Wehrmut". ✨✧ Cluster & EnoCluster & Eno ... LP
Sky (Germany), 1977. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A key meeting between 2 important forces in electronic music in the 70s – the increasingly-experimental Brian Eno and the Cluster team of Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius! Unlike the trio's other album, this one's an all-instrumental affair – one that takes the atmospherics of Cluster, and gives them a darker Eno edge – in a way that gives the record an incredibly moody feel, and predates endless electronic work to come in the 90s. There's a spare brilliance here that's almost indescribable – songs that are hardly songs, sounds that slide back into silence – but somehow the whole thing's got a power that's far beyond the sum of its very small parts. Titles include "Wehrmut", "Fur Luise", "One", and "Die Bunge". LP, Vinyl record album

NeuNeu! (picture disc) ... LP
Brain/Gronland (Germany), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $37.99 39.99
The groundbreaking first album from Neu – maybe not the earliest record in the Krautrock generation – but a set that certainly set a new sort of standard after it was released! The group mix together slow-building rhythms and plenty of fuzz – all recorded by the great Conny Plank, who has a way of blending the songs and all their many elements – instrumentation put together by ex-Kraftwerk members Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother – who mostly use guitars, bass, and drums – but end up turning them into something completely different with the help of Plank! Some of the tracks are quite long, and really take a great path to find their way forward – very different than Can or Cluster, at least from an outside perspective – but equally classic. Soul Jazz (UK), 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LP ... $39.99 49.99
A totally great look at the explosion of electronic sounds in German music during the 70s – a set that goes way past more familiar Krautrock territory, to bring together elements from the artier side of the spectrum too, and even run up to some of the first great moments of the German new wave! Soul Jazz have been down this path before, but this time they're maybe following the road a little farther – as the track selection is especially great, and has a way of really illuminating the special sound of this generation, even if you already know some of the music! There's a few more meditative moments than on previous volumes, mixed with some tuneful tracks, funky numbers, and even a few subtle rockers – all laid out in a way that really makes the songs sound great together as a whole. Titles include "Dronz" by Novalis, "Wide Open Space Machine" by Klaus Weiss, "Deutscher Wald" by Deutsche Wertarbeit, "I'll Be Your Singer You'll Be My Song" by AR & Machines, "The Brain Of Oskar Panizza" by Michael Bundt, "And The Waters Opened" by Between, "White Overalls" by La Dusseldorf, "Tanz Der Vogel In Den Winden" by Achim Reichel, "Hollywood" by Cluster, "Die Haut Der Frau" by Pyrolator, and "Passage" by Streetmark. One of the most enigmatic records of the German scene of the 70s – an odd little set that mixes dark folk variants with a more atmospheric mode – almost as if you're floating in the gentler space of some Cluster-like ambience, when the cast of the Wicker Man bursts in to stir things up! There's a number of moments when the sound is almost at the edge of hearing – especially at the start of tunes – making it hard to figure out an instrumental source, which makes things even more striking when an acoustic guitar or voice comes into play! Titles include "Walking In The Park", "Traume", "Touch The Sun", "Love Time Rain", "Saat", and Die Reise". CD

An electronic prog classic – served up by the Harmonia trio of Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius from Cluster, plus Michael Rother of Neu! The tracks here have a definite Cluster-like sound – instrumentals that use organ, keyboards, guitar, and electronic percussion to build up some wonderfully analogue-styled grooves – often quite slow at first, but filling up nicely as added elements come into the mix! The record's easily one of our favorites from the time, and has a much darker sound than later Moebius/Roedelius work. Titles include "Watussi", "Ohrwurm", "Ahoi", "Dino", "Sonneschein", and "Hausmusik". CD

✨✧ Laurence Vanay (Jacqueline Thibault)Evening Colours (with bonus tracks) ... CD
CAM/Lion, 1976. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing music from Laurance Vanay – actually a recording name for Jacqueline Thibault, a hell of a great keyboardist but an artist the label thought would be better off billed as a man! The sound here is halfway between the spacey experiments of Brian Eno and Cluster, and some of the more ambitious sound library work of the time – particularly those rare moments when prog artist got to do some studio work! Thibault's keyboards are wonderful – lots of Fender Rhodes mixed with Hammond and early synth – usually spun out at an instrumental level that has the tunes building slowly in these really great layers of sound – almost like a Popol Vuh soundtrack, but a lot more tuneful too. There's a fragile complexity that really makes the music special – and unlike anything we've ever heard from the European scene of the time – and titles include "Alone In The Rain", "Evening Colours", "Forgotten Moments", "Twin Cities", "Eyes Closed On The Way", "Sunshine In My Heart", and "Underwater Light Reflection". CD features a huge amount of bonus tracks – includign "Mamie"," Mop", and "Fausse Fn" – plus alternate takes of songs on the album. CD

✨✧ Muhal Richard AbramsBlues Forever ... CD
Black Saint (Italy), 1981. Used ... Out Of Stock
Hardly the blues that you might expect from the title – although knowing Muhal Richard Abrams, there's no doubt some sort of blues influence lurking in the background of his complicated orchestrations for the date! The album's a suite of original compositions by Abrams – all numbers played by a largeish group with lots of wonderful horn patterns – complexly woven together with lots of shifting shapes and tones, then sometimes breaking out in bold, free moments of improvisation! It's records like these that show why Abrams was one of the leading lights of the AACM by the early 80s – as much an important composer as a musician – equally skilled at both levels, and very sensitive to the strengths of the players he chose to work with. Muhal plays piano here – and other group members include Baikida Carroll on trumpet, Craig Harris on trombone, Wallace Laroy McMillan on baritone and flute, Jimmy Vass on alto and flute, Eugene Ghee on tenor and clarinet, Howard Johnson on tuba, Jean-Paul Bourelly on guitar, Michael Logan on bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums. Titles include "Cluster For Many Worlds", "Quartet To Quartet", "Ancient & Future Reflections", "Du King", "Chambea", and "Duet For One World". CD

Gronland (Germany), Mid 70s/2022. New Copy 5LP ... Out Of Stock
A massive tribute to the music of Neu – set with three classic albums, and an exclusive double-length batch of mixes and covers too! First up is the self-titled Neu – maybe not the earliest record in the Krautrock generation, but a set that certainly set a new sort of standard after it was released! Titles include "Hallogallo", "Sonderangerbot", "Im Gluck", "Negativland", "Weissensee", and "Lieber Honig". Neu 2 follows, and continues their trademark pulsating rhythms and raw Teutonic energy – essential listening not only for its titanic importance to the minimalist rock to come – but for it's impeccable hard driving hypnotic genius that has yet to be topped by any of the followers. The album starts off with the longer piece "Fur Immer", while the rest of the album is made up of mostly shorter segments, including "Spitzenqualitat", "Super 16", "Cassetto" and "Hallo Excentrico!". Next is Neu 75 – the third album in a legendary run from Krautrock pioneers Michael Rother and Klaus Dinger – one that uses two different drummers next to the duo's fantastic spare blend of keyboards, guitar, and electronics! The sound is still nice and lean, and every bit as revolutionary as on their first two records – and the whole thing is a masterpiece in blending waves of sonic energy and pulsating rhythms! Titles include "Isi", "See Land", "Leb Wohl", "Hero", "E-Musik", and "After Eight". The set also features the two-part Tribute album – hardly the usual tribute project – as a number of tracks are remixes of the originals, blended with other very unusual takes and original material! Titles include "Im Gluck" (National rmx)", "Weissensee (Fink version)", "Negativland (Idles negative space rework)", "After Eight (They Hate Change cover)", "Lieber Honig (Yann Tiersen rmx)", "Super (Mogwai rmx)", and "Hallogallo (Stephen Morris & Gabe Gurnsey rmx)". ✨✧ RoedeliusJardin Au Fou ... LP
Egg (France), 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful change of sound for Hans Joachim Roedelius – an album of solo piano and keyboard work that's filled with shorter, sweeter tracks than before! The set's still got plenty of the spacier elements that Roedelius brought forth on his classic collaborations with Cluster – but there's also a bit more of a personal feel going on here too – a sense of Hans actually working the keys in a live, spontaneous way – instead of just drifting eerie sounds out in space! The mixture of acoustic piano and electric elements also makes for a very cool sound too – one fleshed out nicely in tonal range, and recorded beautifully by Peter Baumann of Tangerine Dream. The result is a wonderful record that not only breaks free from the longer extremes of the progressive years, but also has some unexpected warmth that's a contrast to some of Roedelius' more atmospheric projects. Titles include "Fou Fou", "Toujours", "Final", "Gloria Dolores", and "Etoiles". LP, Vinyl record album

A rare mid 50s collaboration between pianist Andre Previn and trumpeter Shorty Rogers – an instrumental collaboration between the pair – one that's mostly set up in the mode of Rogers style of the time with his Giants group – but which also really sparkles tremendously with the addition of Previn's brightly-colored piano lines! We'd honestly never thought that highly of Andre's work until hearing this set – and his presence here really adds a new dimension to the Shorty Rogers groove of the 50s – a set of tones that spring out wonderfully, and really illuminate the set! Other players include Bud Shank, Milt Bernhart, Jimmy Giuffre, and Bob Cooper – on 13 titles that include "It's Delovely", "Heat Wave", "40 Below", "Claudia", "General Cluster", "Everything I've Got", "Call For Cole", and "Lullaby Of Birdland". ✨✧ Lalo SchifrinSky Riders ... CD
Aleph, 1976. Used ... Out Of Stock
A lovely little soundtrack from Lalo Schifrin – not as all-out funky as some of his other classics from the mid 70s, but pretty wonderful overall – and scored with a real sense of beauty throughout! The music was penned for a thriller that starred James Coburn and Robert Culp – with an obvious theme of hang-gliding in the action – and Schifrin's tunes have this beautifully airy feel, drifting along with the kind of light instrumentation you might expect from an Ennio Morricone soundtrack of the time! Things are never too minimal, but there's often just one instrument hanging out there in space – or a small cluster of sounds that form together slowly as they come together – a bit like that breathy space between the time a parachutist jumps out of the plane, and the point when they hit the ripcord. The rare and originally Japanese-only Seven Waves album from electronic musician Suzanne Ciani – plus her even rarer Voices Of Packaged Souls from 12 years earlier – together in a single set from Bird/Finders Keepers! Seven Waves was originally issued in the early 80s, and composed on a host of instruments that no longer exist! It's got a spare, ethereal sound – with an electronic vibe that's right up there with some of the best German or French soundtrack albums of this nature from the time – kind of post-Cluster, post-Tangerine Dream material – with shorter tunes and a great melodic focus! Titles include "Sirens", "Love In The Waves", "Wind In The Sea", "Sailing Away", "Water Lullaby", and "Birth Of Venus". Voices Of Packaged Souls is one of the first-ever albums to feature the music of Suzanne Ciani – and one of the wildest, too! The set was originally pressed up in a tiny 50 copy run – as part of an art exhibit in Brussels to feature a sound sculpture collaboration between Ciani and another artist – filled with loads of weird, wild, offbeat electronics by Suzanne – including some cool processed vocal passages, and loads of spare, stark sounds that work together as a beautiful collage – moving from noise to notes to noise and back again! This is the first time the Voices Of Packaged Souls material has ever appeared on CD – and the titles include "Sound Of Heat", "Sound Of Wetness", "Sound Of Love Turning", "Sound Of A Lighted Window", "Sound Of A Dream Kissing", "And All Dreams Are Not For Sale" and many more. ✨✧ Edgar VareseComplete Works Of Edgar Varese Vol 1 (Complete Works/Music Of Edgar Varese/Sound Spectacular) (3CD set) ... CD
El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CDs ... Out Of Stock
A trio of albums that represent important early recordings of compositions by groundbreaking sonic genius Edgar Varese! First is the album Complete Works – an early series of recordings supervised by composer Edgard Varese – featuring versions of what were then his complete works! The record begins with two larger pieces – readings of "Integrales" and "Octandre" conducted by Frederic Waldman, working with the New York Wind Ensemble, who provide some very haunting tones, with additional percussion from the Julliard Percussion Orchestra on the first piece, which is a bit more dramatic. Rene Le Roy continues on the flute solo piece "Density 21.5", and the Julliard Percussion Orchestra comes back for a reading of the classic "Ionisation". The last work is one of the most striking – the three-part "Interpolations", which features "organized sound" compositions, realized on magnetic tape – one of Varese's haunting moves into early electronic music! Next is the Columbia album Music Of Edgar Varese – key Robert Craft takes on three earlier compositions, and the debut of "Poeme Electronique", which was created at the 1958 Brussels World Fair! "Ionisation" has a complex mix of percussion instruments, played by thirteen players – with a quality that's almost a key precursor to the music of Harry Partch. "Density 21.5" is a haunting piece for solo flute – filled with unusual tones and textures – and "Integrales" has a fuller orchestral presentation, and a nicely bombastic vibe, with woodwind tones and percussion colliding beautifully! That sound continues in "Octandre" – a 20s composition that shows just how far Varese was ahead of his time – as does "Hyperprism", from the same year, which is even more dramatic. "Poem Electronique" has a very different approach – all analogue electronics, used in an illustration of Varese's concept of "organized sound", but with a feel that's similar to the best musique concrete material of the 50s. Last up is the Columbia album Sound Spectacular – which offers three very different slices of the genius of Edgar Varese – presented here on a set of classic Columbia recordings from the early 60s! "Arcana" is perhaps the most ambitious work here – structured for an orchestra of 120 musicians, 70 of whom are string players – although the core energy of the piece seems to come from the 8 percussionists who handle a wide variety of instruments – creating those stark sounds that mark some of Varese's most important compositions – which the strings, brass, and woodwinds cluster around in equally powerful ways! "Deserts" is a piece that's more subtle, and much longer – mixing a variety of electronic sounds and instrumental moments, with shifting sonic spaces and volumes throughout – all to make up a side-long recording filled with moody moments and more powerful electronic bursts. "Offrandes" is a selection of two songs – in a haunting blend of woodwind instruments, percussion, and trumpet – plus vocals from soprano Dona Precht. CD

✨✧ TortoiseRhythms Resolutions & Clusters (yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Thrill Jockey, 1995. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A legendary project from Tortoise – kind of the "part 1.5" to their tremendous debut – as it features material from that record, remixed by members of the group and other key figures on the Chicago scene – all as a real testament to the many criss-crossing styles and modes that were taking place during these key post-rock years! The original material was performed by the version of the group that featured Bundy K Brown, John Herndon, John McIntire, Doug McCombs, and Dan Bitney – and remixes are by McEntire and Brown from the group – plus Steve Albini, Brad Wood, Casey Rice, Jim O'Rourke, Rick Brown, and even Mike Watt! Titles include "Alcohall", "Your New Rod", "Cobwebbed", "Tin Cans (Puerto Rican mix)", "Initial Gesture Protraction", "The Match Incident", and "Not Quite East Of The Ryan". LP, Vinyl record album

Tim Berne's SnakeoilDeceptive 4 ... CD
Intakt (Switzerland), 2020. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 32.99
There's nothing deceptive about this quartet – as the group work here live, completely unfettered – with the kind of honest, open interaction that have made Snakeoil one of the greatest musical contributions from reedman Tim Berne! The lineup has a special sort of edge – no bass, and lots of interplay between Berne's alto and the clarinets of Oscar Noriega – reed lines that on their own would be enough, but which get exactly the kind of right support from the piano of Matt Michell and drums of Ches Smith – all four members often working together in these sonic clusters that really reflect their long-running understanding of each others strengths and talents! The tracks here are all nice and long – performed live at Firehouse – and titles include "OCDC", "Moornoats", "Perception", "Deception", "Seven", "Scanners", and "Hemphill". CD

BoogarinsManchaca Vols 1 & 2 ... LP
ORG, 2023. New Copy 2LP ... $18.99 29.99
A wealth of recordings from Boogarins – a Brazilian group, but one who've worked in a fair bit of different spots on the global scene – including Austin, Texas, which is where this music was recorded! The sounds within might be thought of as stray experiments clustered around the energy of their Sombrou Duvida album – and like that set, the music here is a fantastic blend of classic psychedelic elements with more contemporary energy – often very raw and rootsy, with plenty of percussion, echoey vocals, and really hypnotic electric guitar! The style is hardly conventional rock on most numbers, as the structure breaks down nicely – although there are a few tighter moments on the material on the set from volume two. Titles include "Basic Lines", "Eixao", "Derramado", "Meto O Loco", "Far & Safe", "Correndo Em Furia", "Caes Do Odio", "Are You Crazy Lukian", "Espera Fala De Novo", "Noite Bright", and "LVCO 2". ✨✧ Gordon Beck TrioGyroscope ... CD
Morgan Blue Town (UK), 1969. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Incredibly fluid work from the Gordon Beck trio of the late 60s – and powerhouse ensemble that featured Tony Oxley on drums and Jeff Clyne on bass. The tunes are all originals by Beck, and played in a style that has lots of the free and introspective styles that were percolating in the European piano underground at the time – almost like the work of Steve Kuhn, in that Beck opens up nicely, but never seems to go too far outside – and is as concerned with weaving tapestries of tone and color as he is with exploring new sounds and space. Great stuff all around, and a key look at an oft-overlooked player! Titles include "Miss T Fying", "Gyroscope", "Clusters", "Suite No 1", and "Sincerity". CD

✨✧ Daniel Bernardes & Drumming GPLiturgy Of The Birds – In Memoriam Olivier Messiaen ... CD
Clean Feed (Portugal), 2019. Used Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Pianist Daniel Bernardes has a lot of percussionists in his group – not just drummer Mario Costa in the core trio with Antonio Augusto Aguiar on bass – but another quartet of musicians, who add in vibes, marimba, glockenspiel, and other percussion – all in a set of tracks based on the compositional ideas of composer Olivier Messiaen! The music is still very strongly in a jazz-based mode – and the percussion is often used lightly, as melodic as it is rhythmic – but there's a great sense of note clusters going on, in ways that make the music inherently rhythmic, even when the drums are taking a back seat to the piano and vibes. Titles include "Globular Clusters", "Sobre Kieslowski I", "Ostinato Interludio E Cancao V", "19", and "Bolero". CD

Plaza, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Massive rare work from Randy Muller – the funky soul powerhouse behind Brass Construction, BT Express, and Skyy – stepping out here with a host of fantastic cuts pulled from the vaults! As the title indicates, all the work here is of late 70s/early 80s vintage – a point when Muller was really riding high, not just as a member of groups, but also as a force in the studio – doing work for some of the hottest club and soul talents of the time, a few of whom are represented in this set! The package is nicely clustered into work by a handful of talents – making us feel that this first volume is definitely just the start of some greatness to come from Randy. ✨✧ Paul QuinichettePQ Special ... CD
Ocium (Spain), 1952/1953/1954. Used ... Out Of Stock
Great early 50s work from Paul Quinichette – sides recorded when the tenor legend was at the height of his powers, and featuring some uncollected material done for the Dale and Decca labels, as well as some great sides for Emarcy! The CD has 5 different clusters of material – from as many different sessions – and players include Marlowe Morris, Jimmy Golden, Skeeter Best, Kenny Drew, Freddie Green, and Henry Coker. Tracks are all in a hard-swinging mode that has Quinichette pushing that raspy tone of his very nicely – and the set features 24 tracks that include "Galoshes & Rubbers", "Green Is Blue (parts 1 & 2)", "Bustin Suds", "PQ Blues", "Birdland Jump (parts 1 & 2)", "Mine", "The Heat's On", "Humpty Dumpty", and "The Heat's Off".
