James Carter QuartetJurassic Classics ... CD
DIW (Japan), 1994. Used ... $3.99
There's nothing prehistoric about this set – as saxophonist James Carter's working here in an angular mode that's strikingly modern, despite the "classics" in the title! The tunes are all familiar ones, but they're recast by Carter with a deep tone on tenor, alto, and soprano sax – one that recalls the freshness of Sonny Rollins during his most creative period, but which also is recorded here with a bit more looseness and sense of freedom. The group are all players from Carter's Detroit scene – Craig Taborn on piano, Jaribu Shahid on bass, and Tani Tabaal on drums – and titles include "Oleo", "Out Of Nowhere", "Take The A Train", "Ask Me Now", "Sandu", and "Equinox". Great small combo work from Bud Freeman – a well-recorded date that has his tenor alongside guitar from George Barnes, piano from Richard Cary, bass from Jack Lesberg, and drums from Don Lamond. The album's got a nicely gentle swing, and a mix of modes that's never too traddish – and titles include "Indian Summer", "Blues For Tenor", "Three Little Words", "I Guess I'll Have To Change My Plan", and "Margo's Seal". Capitol, 1949. Very Good+ ... $1.99
A collection of early bop singles cut for Capitol – one that includes some excellent rare material, including fantastic early work by Babs Gonzales, and some of Sonny Rollins' first work on record! Babs clocks in with some great little vocal numbers that include – "Real Crazy", "Prelude To A Nightmare", "Professor Bop", and "Capitolizing" – all gems that rank with his best offbeat vocal tunes of later years. Dizzy's in a similar format on some of his tunes – titles that include "Coast To Coast", "You Stole My Wife You Horsethief", "Say When", and "Oo La La" – and Tadd Dameron finishes up the album with some great tracks that include "Sid's Delight", "Casbah", "John's Delight", and "Heaven's Doors Are Open Wide". Jimmy McGriffToast To Jimmy McGriff's Golden Classics ... LP
Sue/Collectables, 1960s. Very Good+ ... $7.99
A tasty collection of Jimmy McGriff's work for the Sue label during the mid and early 60s – all hard-hitting R&B tinged numbers that have the Hammond stepping out about as far as it can go! These are the sorts of tunes that influenced a generation of hipsters – from Brit beat groups of the 60s, to more recent funky acid jazz combos. Jimmy's organ is in fine fine form, and he's often backed by only a small combo with a very prominent guitar. Titles include "Bump De Bump", "Hello Betty", "One Of Mine", "Kiko", "MG Blues", "Topkapi", "Turn Blue", "I've Got A Woman", "Last Minute", and "All About My Girl". LP, Vinyl record album

Jimmy Ruffin was one of Motown's best voices of the 60s – and this set brings together 18 of his classic cuts, a handful of which were cut in duets with his brother David. The original vinyl on these tracks is always pretty tough to find, and the set's got many of Jimmy's bigger cuts from the time. Titles include "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted", "Your Love Was Worth Waiting For", "I Want Her Love", "Baby, I've Got It", "How Can I Say I'm Sorry", "Since I've Lost You", "Stand By Me", "Turn Back The Hands Of Time", "Living In A World I Created For Myself", and "I'll Say Forever My Love". Later work from the great Teddy Wilson – playing solo here, and with fidelity that really captures the mature brilliance of his work on piano – in a very different vibe than his better-known recordings from the 78rpm generation! The session was recorded overseas by the Black Lion label – one of the later efforts from producer Alan Bates – and as the title indicates, the set's all Cole Porter material – with tunes that include "Love For Sale", "Get Out Of Town", "Too Darn Blue", "I Love You", "Easy To Love", "I've Got You Under My Skin", and "Just One Of Those Things". Luaka Bop, 1989. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99 26.99
The first-ever record in the Luaka Bop legacy – a massive collection of Brazilian grooves that still serves as one of the best introductions to the music we can think of! Most of the artists here are the bigger names of the MPB generation of the 70s – but many are still very under-represented in the US market – which makes the collection of work here completely essential. The styles range from samba soul of Jorge Ben to the lyrical poetry of Caetano Veloso to the soulful drama of Milton Nascimento – and titles include "Ponta De Lanca Africano" and "Fio Varavilha" by Jorge Ben, "Cacada" by Chico Buarque, "Quilombo O El Dorado Negro" and "So Quero Um Xodo" by Gilberto Gil, "Quiexa" and "O Leaozinho" by Caetano Veloso, "Sonho Meu" by Maria Bethania & Gal Costa, "Caixa De Sol" by Nazare Pereira, and "Anima" by Milton Nascimento. Soul Jazz (UK), 1970s. New Copy 2CD ... $15.99 22.99
A set with old school breakdancers on the cover, but one that features music from the generation before – a whole host of 70s funky nuggets, all of which might provide the right sort of beats and grooves for spinning on a piece of linoleum on the sidewalk! There's just a slight touch of hip hop here, and most of the numbers date from the earliest years of the South Bronx street parties – cuts that included key samples and breaks that would later build up into more famous hip hop cuts – mixed with others that stand equally strong on their own – all working together in a package that's maybe one of the best funk collections we've heard from the soul jazz label in years! Titles include "Energy Level" by BT Express, "Sunshine Of Your Love" by Spanky Wilson, "Last Night Changed It All" by Esther Williams, "Soul Makossa" by Manu Dibango, "Soulwanco" by Candido, "Breaker's Revenge" by Arthur Baker, "The Panther" by Manu Dibango, "Life & Death In G & A" by Abaco Dream, "Dancing Machine" by Jackson 5, "It's Just Begun" by Jimmy Castor, "Get On The Good Foot" by James Brown, "Hot Wheels" by Badder Than Evil, and "I Just Wanna Do My Thing" by Edwin Starr. VariousCuba Classics 3 – Diablo Al Infierno/New Directions In Cuban Music ... CD
Luaka Bop, 1992. Used ... $1.99
As with most of these Luaka Bop compilations, the package is a bit patronizing, but the music's pretty darn great – even if this one is all over the map, in a perhaps overly-earnest effort to provide a rich sampling of recent music from Cuba. Can't blame them for trying, though – and even though some of the material on the CD dates from the 70s and 80s, the set's got lots of nice moments, like "Bacalao Con Pan" by Irakere, "Sintesis" by Asoyin, "El Baile Del Buey Cansao" by Los Van Van, "Que Viva Chango" by NG La Banda, "Diablo Al Infierno" by Zeus, and "Congo Yambumba" by Vocal Sampling. VariousDebut/Period – Original Jazz Classics Sampler ... CD
OJC/Debut/Period/Ace (UK), Mid 1950s. New Copy ... $5.99 14.99
A big dive into the indie jazz scene of the 50s – served up here in a great batch of rare tracks! The first half of the set is especially nice – as it looks at work that was originally issued on the groundbreaking Debut Records label – initially formed by Charles Mingus and Max Roach, and very unique in that it was one of the first artist-owned jazz labels in the US! The set also features a handful of work from other small indies of the period – Period Records, Esoteric, and Seeco – and the whole thing is a nice slice of work away from the world of Blue Note and Prestige – with titles that include "The Man I Love" by Ada Moore, "Serenade In Blue" by Charles Mingus, "Bijou" by Ralph Burns, "Pennies From Heaven" by Al Haig with Stan Getz, "I'll Remember April" by Thad Jones, "The Pendulum Of Falcon's Lair" by Oscar Pettiford, "Ruby My Dear (take 2)" by Kenny Dorham, "How High The Moon" by Roy Eldridge & Flip Phillips, "Swing To Bop" by Charlie Christian with Thelonious Monk, "Ornithology" by Charlie Parker, "Perdido" by The Quintet, "Nature Boy" by Miles Davis, "Peace Of Mind" by Hazel Scott, and "Embraceable You" by Bud Powell. Strut (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LPs (reissue)... $37.99 39.99
A really wonderful collection – an important re-investigation of the unusual mix of sounds and styles on the New York scene in the years after disco – a time when funk, punk, hip hop, and art were all colliding at once – providing a really fresh antidote to the staid sounds of Studio 54! The "disco" in the title should be taken lightly – as these cuts didn't play at the slick uptown dance spots – but were instead the soundtrack for the cool spots happening downtown, as the previous loft culture morphed into clubs, in this very special blend of the energy of CBGB and the underground soulful dancefloors. The set list is filled with classics from this time – and titles include "Cavern" by Liquid Liquid, "Tell You Today (voc)" by Loose Joints, "Walking On Thin Ice (re-edit)" by Yoko Ono, "Over & Over" by Material, "Spasticus Autisticus (version)" by Ian Dury & The Seven Seas Players, "Kiss Me Again (original edit)" by Dinosaur, "Move" by Nicky Siano, "School Bell/Tree House" by Indian Ocean, "I Walk" by Don Cherry, "Voices Inside My Head" by Common Sense, and "Wheel Me Out" by Was Not Was. Vinyl Masterpiece (Netherlands), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CDs ... $9.99 19.99
Great 80s grooves with some 70s moments thrown in as well – a double-length collection that features a host of overlooked gems from the past! The "giants" here aren't overplayed disco hits or classics that have been compiled too much – and instead, the set continues the great approach of previous volumes by really digging deep to find the kind of snapping, uptempo cuts that were perfect for the underground clubs in the years between disco and house! Titles include "You & I" by Ronnie Jones, "Good Lovin" by Al Mason, "You Fooled Me" by Grey & Hanks, "Gotta Take Your Love" by Game, "You & Me" by Ronnie Dyson, "You're A Blessing" by Heaven & Earth, "Wanna Make It Good" by Tyrone Davis, "Baby Not Tonight" by Madagascar, "California Flight" by California Flight Project, "Never Gonna Let You Go (special disco version)" by Shazar, "Holding On" by The Givens Family, "This Is Where The Love Is (extended)" by Zinc, "Love Me Today (12" version)" by First Love, "Space Lady" by Bill, and "Good Girl" by Bonnie Byrd. VariousHe Took Us By Storm – 25 Lost Classics From The Bob Dylan Folk Rock Revolution Era ... CD
Bear Family (Germany), Mid 1960s. New Copy ... $16.99 20.99
Not the music of Bob Dylan – but a great little set that shows just how much Dylan's influence spread amidst various channels of the music world of the mid 60s – so much so, that it left behind a whole host of unlikely acts picking up some of his sounds and styles – and using it to make some marvelous music of their own! There's definitely some folk artists in the mix here, bu the set expands out nicely to show just how much other aspects of rock, pop, and vocal music were influenced by Dylan's style – bits of protest here, a slight current of folk blues expression there – and plenty of open, honest, and playful lyrical touches throughout – all very well documented in the album's large booklet of notes. The set features 25 surprising tracks in all – and tunes include "These Are Not My People" by Billy Joe Royal, "Me & Mr Hohner" by Bobby Darin, "Long Black Cadillac" by Jackie Washington, "Feet First Baby" by Len Chandler, "Willie Jean" by David Crosby, "Men Of Good Fortune" by Lou Reed, "Persecution Smith" by Bob Seger, "Baby Let Me Follow You Down" by Boz Scaggs, "Black Betty" by Dino Valenti, "Vigilante Man" by Sammy Walker, "Everybody's Talking About The Young" by Leon Russell, "Don't You Wonder Where It's At" by Barry McGuire, "Next Year This Time" by Bubba Fowler, "Halloween Mary" by PF Sloan, and "You've Got To Be Kidding" by Dick Campbell. VariousNighttime Lovers Vol 34 – A Fine Collection Of Disco Funk Classics Of The 80s ... CD
PTG (Netherlands), Early 80s. New Copy ... $11.99 19.99
Boogie, electro, and 80s groove – all sorted out nicely in this killer collection of ultra-rare cuts! As with previous volumes, this edition of Nighttime Lovers shows a side of the 80s that hardly got any play at the time – the more underground work by lesser-known artists, much of which was issued on the bigger labels, but failed to crack the charts! You'll recognize a few familiar names here, but even those are represented by under-discovered corners of their work – and in true early 80s spirit, most tracks here are heavy on beats and keyboards – yet still leave plenty of room for real soul vocals. Titles include "So Delicious" by Point 3 FM, "What Am I Gonna Do" by Streetlife, "Never Gonna Give You Up (12" version)" by Gwendolyn Lassic, "Make It Easy" by Cross-Phyre with Demetrius, "You're My Doll Baby" by Norfolk, "Special Part Of Me (12" version)" by Charles Blackman, "The Same For Me" by California Executives with Ronald Dudley, "Magic Touch" by Gang's Back, "Love I Thought I Never Would Find Love" by James Govan, "Seconds Of Your Love" by Johnny Taylor, and "I Got My Game Plan Working Baby" by Arlene Bailey. The cover's a bit grubby, and the title's a bit obscure – but the set's overflowing with killer soul rarities that played big on the UK scene in the 60s! That cardboard sleeve is the sort that British DJs used to use to hold their rare 7" singles – and the "talcum" in the cover is a reference to the powder that the dancers would use to help them slide across the floor with amazing moves – but all you really need to know is that the set's filled with great soul tracks – many of which are from the first few years of the 60s, when an initially strong tendency towards R&B was taking hold on dancefloors in England – more popcorn than northern soul, if you know that reference. The set's got a whopping 26 tracks in all – most pretty darn obscure – and titles include "Chills & Fever" by Ronnie Love, "When You See Me Hurt" by Carl Lester & The Show Stoppers, "It's Your Voodoo Working" by Charles Sheffield, "Any Way You Wanta" by Harvey, "You'd Better Come Home" by Russell Byrd, "Just To Hold My Hand" by Earl Connelly, "Burnt Toast & Black Coffee" by Mike Pedicin, "Superman" by Johnny Twovoice, and "Charlie Chan" by The Eventuals. Timeless/Music On Vinyl (Netherlands), Late 1970s/Early 1980s. New Copy 2LP ... $37.99 41.99
Gilles Peterson takes on the mighty jazz catalog of Timeless Records – and creates the same magic with their tracks that he's done in the past with other labels like Impulse Records and MPS! The Peterson ear for a gem is very present here – and the set does a great job of digging both well-remembered sets from the label and some overlooked nuggets – the latter of which really make the set worthwhile, as they represent some Timeless cuts that are getting very hard to track down on wax in recent years! There's a strong mix of soulful straight jazz, modal grooves, and more spiritual numbers – on titles that include "Why" by Carter Jefferson, "Articulation" by Rodney Jones, "Haiti B" by Joanne Brackeen, "World Peace" by Timeless All Stars, "Zen Turtles" by Brian Melvin with Jaco Pastorius, "Bolivia" by Eastern Rebellion, "Gibraltar (alt take)" by Kirk Lightsey with Freddie Hubbard, "La Carnival" by Eddie Harris, "No Me Esqueca" by Tom Grant, "In Case You Missed It" by Art Blakey, and "Moonchild" by Pharoah Sanders. ✨✧ Tim MaiaWorld Psychedelic Classics 4 – Nobody Can Live Forever – The Existential Soul Of Tim Maia ... LP
Luaka Bop, 1970s. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Insanely great sounds from the legendary Tim Maia – easily the most soulful singer in 70s Brazil, and an artist with a heck of a strong ear for funk, too! The music here is an incredible hybrid of American soul and Brazilian elements – especially since some lyrics are in English – and the grooves are often mixed together in a sound that's nice and fuzzy around the edges, with some slight psychedelic elements that makes the cuts a perfect fit for this Luaka Bop series! Yet Tim Maia's hardly a guy who can easily fit into any easy slot or series – because as you'll hear on this set, he's got a vibe that's all his own – a really wonderful approach that's different even from some of his hippest contemporaries in Brazil – and which has gone onto have influence on countless other generations of singers and musicians – including his nephew Ed Motta. The package is great – a real visual tribute to the sounds within – and titles include "Que Beleza", "Ela Partiu", "Do Leme Ao Pontal", "Brother Father Mother Sister", "Quer Queira Quer Nao Queira", "Let's Have A Ball Tonight", "I Don't Care", "The Dance Is Over", "Rational Culture", "You Don't Know What I Know", and "Nobody Can Live Forever". Luaka Bop, 1989. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sony (UK), 1960s. Used 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Looking for rare soul? This is the place – as the 2CD set features 58 hard to find tracks from the Epic, Okeh, Columbia, and Date labels – all part of the CBS enclave, but also labels that were cutting some great soul singles back in the 60s, the kind of well-done indie-sounding tracks that always fell through the cracks! In a way, since these ones came from major label sources, they're actually rarer cuts than many smaller label sides – which tended to stay in circulation a bit longer – making the work of the compilation even more essential, as there's loads of tunes here that you'd be really hard pressed to find as singles! Way more here to describe in just a short note – but a few tracks include "Walk Like A Man" by Johnny Moore, "Abracadabra" by Erma Franklin, "One In A Million" by Rhetta Hughes, "Keep On Loving You" by Otis Leavill, "Pity My Feet" by Kenny Bernard, "Love On A Mountain Top" by Robert Knight, "You Don't Know Where Your Interest Lies" by Dana Valery, "I Need You" by Shane Martin, "Tend To Business" by The Rivingtons, "If You Were There" by Obrey Wilson, "Get My Hands On Some Lovin" by The Artistics, "Get It From The Bottom" by The Steelers, "He Who Picks A Rose" by The Carstairs, "Hang Up Your Hang Ups" by Bobby Lester, and "Temptation Is Calling My Name" by Lee David. Not much of a cover or title, but a pretty great little set – and one that features a fair bit of lesser-known gems from years back, despite its claim of classics! The tracks here are all at the higher end of the disco rhythmic spectrum – mostly quite upbeat, with soaring strings and tight instrumental flourishes – very much in the spirit of Paul Sabu, who produced some of the cuts on the set – or some of the bigger hits on TK Records from the time. Titles include "If You Could Read My Mind" by Viola Wills, "I'm Here & I'm Hot" by Vicki Sue Robinson, "Superman" by Celi Bee, "Love Rush" by Ann-Margret, "Do Your Best" by Carl Hahn, "Gimme Back My Love Affair" by Sister Power, "We're Gonna Rock" by Sabu, "Disco Dancin" by Rice & Beans Orchestra, "Magnifique" by Magnifique, and "Don't You Want My Love" by Debbie Jacobs. Nice one! This is a sparkling set of 14 groovers pulled from some of the odder albums on Atlantic Records. Although best known as a soul label, Atlantic also cut some pretty mean funky jazz material – especially during the late 60s/early 70s, when they were running the groovy Vortex and Embryo sub-labels. This set was put together by Russ Dewbury, and it features some great groovers that we almost never see on vinyl these days. Tracks include "Baby, I Don't Know Where" by Air, "Live Humble" by Yusef Lateef, "The Power Of A Smile" by Herb Geller, "Vibrafinger" by Gary Burton, "Jan Jan" by The Fabulous Counts, "New Bell" by Manu Dibango, "Shorty Rides Again" by Les McCann & Eddie Harris, and "Cherrystones" by Eugene McDaniels. Musidisc (France), 1959/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
This great session that was recorded in 1958 at the Hillcrest Club in LA, and which features Ornette Coleman's classic group, with Paul Bley sitting in on piano. The record is released here strangely under Bley's name, but it's really an Ornette session, with Bley sitting in on piano. The tracks are long, and the interplay between Cherry and Coleman is of classic vintage. Titles include "The Blessing", "Free", and "I Remember Harlem". The second half of the CD is fantastic material from the late 50s – recorded live, possibly at the same Hillcrest Club sessions that yielded the material on the Fabulous Paul Bley album issued in France. The set's pure Coleman, but with a twist. Bley's comping on piano gives the record more of a straight jazz groove – very interesting to hear on the 14 minute reading of "Ramblin" that's very different than any of the later ones. The group features Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, and Billy Higgins along with Coleman and Bley – and titles include "How Deep Is The Ocean", "Crossroads", and "When Will The Blues Leave". Great stuff, and a key slice of Ornette's early career! CD

Art Farmer's always a delight – but he sounds especially great on this batch of early tracks, ones that have him grooving a bit harder than in later years, with a firey tone that really steps out at times. There's still plenty of Art's sweetness in the tunes, but the material is a bit more upbeat and forward, with less lyrical meandering than later, and more of an early 50s bop approach. Players include Sonny Rollins, Horace Silver, Kenny Clarke, and Wynton Kelly (the album features 2 different groups) – and titles include "Pre Amp", "Wisteria", "I'll Take Romance", "Confab In Tempo", "Soft Shoe", and "I'll Walk Alone". A pair of Enoch Light oddities from the 70s – both in Quad! First up is Beatles Classics – a very cool take on the sound of The Beatles – served up here by Enoch Light, but in a way that's a bit different than some of his other records of the time! The set features symphonic readings of tunes by the fab four – much more heavy on woodwinds and strings than you might expect, but still delivered with that sense of separation that can make Light's music so great – with solo standouts that are completely seductive! Titles include the suite "Hello Goodbye/Something/Penny Lane" – plus "Eleanor Rigby", "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", "Let It Be", "Hey Jude", "Michelle", and "Norwegian Wood". Serendipity has reverse sort of approach – as the set takes classical themes, but strips them down a bit for the 70s – the unique Enoch Light spin on themes from Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, and Chopin! CD

An overlooked gem from Carmen – one of her few albums for Columbia from the 60s, and a wonderfully swinging small group session that's got a much more relaxed feel than some of her earlier sets! The album's ostensibly a tribute to Billie Holiday – but it's taken in a way that's completely unlike Holiday's own work – filled with life, joy, and a swinging sensibility that's carried off perfectly by arranger Norman Simmons – who heads up a small combo on piano, working with Walter Perkins on drums, Bob Cranshaw on bass, Nat Adderley on cornet, Eddie Lockjaw Davis on tenor, and Mundell Lowe on guitar. Carmen's vocals are wonderfully groovy – and tunes include "I Cried For You", "Them There Eyes", "My Man", "Strange Fruit", "Miss Brown To You", and "Some Other Spring". LP, Vinyl record album

Luaka Bop, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3 LPs Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Grooves unlike anything else you've ever heard before – the rightly legendary musical legacy of William Onyeabor, one of the most enigmatic talents to come from the African scene of the 70s! The work here is all plenty darn funky, but it's also very different from familiar Afro Funk too – as the instrumentation is heavy on keyboards, handled by William with incredible dexterity – and spun out in these soaring lines that bristle with righteous touches that really support the message of his tunes! The vibe mixes in some electro elements with long-drawn rhythms – and the vocals often step aside for lots of keyboard and rhythm interplay, then come in to send things home at just the right moment. Onyeabor's been a pretty elusive cat over the years, and it's taken Luaka Bop quite some time to put this collection together – amazing work that may well make the album one of the most important to ever come from the label – and the first introduction to the non-African world of Onyeabor's incredible sounds. Titles include "Body & Soul", "Atomic Bomb", "Something You'll Never Forget", "Why Go To War", "Love Is Blind", "Fantastic Man", and "Let's Fall In Love". 3LP set features four bonus tracks not on the CD!
