✨✧ VariousHeroes & Villains – The Sound Of Los Angeles 1965 to 1968 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CD ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A deep dive into the sound of Los Angeles in the middle of the 60s – a really well-done box that somehow manages to mix together all the different strains of music that were going on in the city of angels at the time – sunshine pop, garage rock, psych, pop, and even more experimental modes – served up here in a set list that's full of some of the coolest, hippest groups of the time! The box takes its title from a Beach Boys tune, but this isn't a set of well-played oldies from AM radio – and instead, the selection demonstrates the continued appreciation of this period of music over the decades, and the shift in interest to some of the more groundbreaking, obscure groups of the period – served up here with bigger names as well – all with the detailed notes and overflowing amount of tracks that we love from these boxes on the Grapefruit label! There's a massive 90 tracks in all – with work from Mark Eric, Jim & The Lords, The Heroes, Candy Company, Odds & Ends, Spirit, The Misunderstood, Urban Renewal Project, Peanut Butter Conspiracy, Captain Beefheart, Ruthann Friedman, The Rogues, Music Machine, Whatt Four, Velvet Illusions, Merrell & The Xiles, Sanctions, Grass Roots, New Wave, West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, Grains Of Sand, Merry Go Round, Human Expression, Love, Laughing Wind, Roger Nichols & The Small Circle Of Friends, Boystown, Gene Clark, and many others! VariousLos Angeles Modern/Kent Northern Soul ... LP
Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
A great collection of rare soul tracks from the west coast scene of the 60s – one that has the Ace/Kent label returning to the territory of some of their earliest compilations, but with lots of fresh and unreleased material in the mix! The Kent and Modern labels trace their roots back to the initial outpouring of postwar R&B on the Los Angeles scene – and by the time of the 60s, the companies were in a great position to pick the hippest, coolest cats from their city's soul underground – often recording so much music, only a portion of it was ever released back in the day! That's definitely the case here – as 8 of the 14 tracks on the collection never saw release in the 60s – making the collection a fantastic mix of rare and released Northern Soul from the city of angels. Titles include "Wanting You (alt)" by Jimmy Bee, "Lay This Burden Down" by Arthur Wright & His Orchestra, "Love Is Gonna Get You" by Peggy Woods, "Can It Be Me" by Mel Williams, "Baby Without You" by Gene & Gary, "Nobody But Me" by The Other Brothers, "Make Me Yours" by ZZ Hill, "Hey Stoney Face" by Mary Love, "No Puppy Love" by Johnny Copeland, "This Man Wants You" by Wally Cox, and "Get To Steppin" by Jackie Day. ✨✧ Elyse WeinbergGreasepaint Smile ... CD
Numero, 1969. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The unreleased second album from Elyse Weinberg – a very hip LA singer/songwriter from the late 60s canyon scene working here with guest help from top-shelf talents who include Neil Young, Nils Lofgren, and JD Souther! Yet despite the presence of these giants, the album's very much Weinberg's own – up-close and personal tunes that feature her earthy vocals alongside gentle guitar lines – all at a level that's way different than familiar folk-inflected rock, and which also has that uniqueness that you'd find in a rare few from Elyse's generation – like Young or Joni Mitchell. And unlike other projects of this nature from later years, the whole thing's wonderfully under-done – not poorly produced, but respectfully handled – so that the lady is very much out front in the lead, doing a hell of a lot with just a little – on titles that include "What You Call It", "City Of The Angels", "Nicodemus", "Gospel Ship", "Greasepaint Smile", "My My My", and "Houses". ✨✧ Jo Jo GunneAsylum Recordings Vol 2 (Jumpin The Gunne/So Where's The Show – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Asylum/Wounded Bird, Early/Mid 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Tight early-to-mid 70s rock from Jo Jo Gunne –the post-Spirit group founded by that legendary combo's Jay Ferguson and Mark Andes – but by this point, Ande's had departed and Ferguson was Jo Jo Gunne's main gun! Asylum Recordings Volume 2 features the band's complete Jumpin The Gunne and So Where's The Show records from '73 and '74 – plus a couple bonus tracks that weren't released at the time. Fans of Spirit's far-reaching, post psych proclivities might not find a lot to love about Jo Jo Gunne's more focused, catchy as hell rock and roll – but whatever Jo Jo lacks in freewheeling creativity, in makes up for the good time exuberance. It's got some weird touches here and there, too – such as the steel drums in on Jumpin' The Gunne's "Getaway" and some spacey keyboards on So Where's The Show – but it's a straight up rockin' good time for the most part. Other tracks from that Jumpin'. . .include "I Wanna Love You", "To The Island', "Red Meat", "Neon City" and more. So Where's The Show cuts include the great title track, "I'm Your Shoe", "Falling Angels", "Into My Life" and more. 2 bonus tracks: "Good Goody Two Shows" and "Screamin' Mimi". CD

✨✧ Bitchin BajasBajas Fresh ... LP
Drag City, 2017. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
The best, most atmospheric and sweeping effort yet from Bitchin' Bajas – a 2LP, nearly 80 minute set of always engaging avant instrumentals – full off loping electronic, percussive and string textures that are hypnotic all the way. It's like the core trio set out to subvert the expectations of post-millennium experimental or post-rock instrumentals, going for a vibe that's a lot more captivating, and they keep them consistently evolving throughout a really expansive and ever evolving set. The core trio gets some top shelf guest accompaniment in guitarist Masaki Batoh, Jim Becker on organ, Nick Broste on trombone, Ben Lamar Gay on cornet and Nori Tanaka on percussion, and titles include "Jammu Circles On Circles", a cool cover (or maybe adaptation is a better word) of Sun Ra's "Angels & Demons At Play", "Yonaguni", "2303", "Chokayo" and "Be Going". Sun RaAngels & Demons At Play/Between Two Worlds/Spontaneous Simplicity ... 7-inch
Art Yard (UK), Early 60s. New Copy ... $19.99
A stunning package of work from the early days of Sun Ra & The Arkestra – three really wonderful tracks that are well-deserving of issue on a 45! "Angels & Demons At Play" is perhaps one of the greatest illustrations of the way that Ra took all of the exotic currents in postwar music and pushed them into his own cosmic directions – using a wonderful modal rhythm, mixed with some of the percussion effects you might have heard from Martin Denny or Les Baxter – then topping things with a wonderful flute solo that really sends things home! "Between Two Worlds" builds things up in a similar modal rhythm, but more choppy – with stark energy on the percussion that's echoed by the beautiful reed work of the tune! "Spontaneous Simplicity" is a bit looser and more spiritual – a real precursor to some of the directions that other jazz artists would pick up in years to come! 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ John Zorn/John Medeski/Matt Hollenberg/Kenny GrohowskiNostradamus – The Death Of Satan ... CD
Tzadik, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Really freewheeling sounds from this heavy power trio – a group with the structure of a jazz organ trio, but the ferocity of a group that dips heavily into hard rock too! As with previous entries in this series, John Zorn is the composer and "conductor" – but the real energy comes from the frenzied combination of John Medeski on organ, Matt Hollenberg on guitar, and Kenny Grobowski on drums – the last of whom is a non-stop powerhouse who pushes both players to new heights in their music – then knows just the right moment to drop back a bit, and let the keys and strings do their thing! Titles include "Chaos & Eternal Light", "Dark Angels", "From The Cave Of Treasures", "The Stygian Pool", "Seven Spirits", and "Melmoth". CD
