Gang StarrHard To Earn ... LP
Chrysalis, 1994. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $24.99 29.99
Gang Starr at pretty close to peak level here on 1994's Hard To Earn – and rather than continue to ride the waves they made on the previous couple classic albums, Guru sharpens the lyrical tone just a bit – spitting some more incisive rhymes over apporpriately gritty soul jazz beats from Primo. Tracks include the classic "DWYCK" featuring Nice & Smooth – which is just about our favorite Gang Starr track ever, to be honest – plus "Speak Ya Clout" featuring Jeru and Lil Dap, "Mass Appeal", "Code Of The Streets", "Brainstorm", "Tonz O Gunz", "Suckas Need Bodyguards", "Blowin Up The Spot", "Mostly Tha Voice", "F.A.L.A.", "Now You're Mine", "Comin For Datazz", "Aiight Chill...", "The Planet", and more. Gang StarrJust To Get A Rep (voc, inst, acapella)/Who's Gonna Take The Weight (voc, inst) ... 12-inch
Chrysalis, 1990. Very Good (pic cover)... $28.99
The first Gang Starr single after they left Wild Pitch, from way back when Guru was still also known as Keith E. E. The original 12-inch version of "Just To Get A Rep" – the version included here – includes a whole extra verse at the end that gives a completely different ending to the song. For some reason, that verse was left off the LP version and the version on "Full Clip." 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Jethro TullBenefit ... LP
Chrysalis, 1970. Very Good- ... $4.99
An early gem from Jethro Tull – and a set that has the group really reaching forth with some of their more complicated, jazz-based musical impulses – while still holding onto some of the rawer power of the early days too! The album's lesser-known than some of the group's earlier hits – which may well make it even fresher all these many years later – a really stunning set of sounds that showcases the newly lyrical sensibility of Ian Anderson – both vocally and on flute – as well as the searing guitar of Martin Barre, which was really becoming a core element of the group at this point. Titles include "For Michael Collins Jefferey & Me", "Inside", "Play In Time", "Sossity You're A Woman", "With You There To Help Me", and "Nothing To Say". LP, Vinyl record album

Procol HarumProcol's Ninth (3CD set) ... CD
Chrysalis/Esoteric (UK), 1975. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99
A hugely expanded version of this record – with two and a half CD's worth of unreleased material! The core record is quite an unusual moment for Procol Harum – still riding strong here onto their ninth album as a group – but also bringing in the legendary production team of Leiber & Stoller to help sharpen their sound! Yet apart from a few well-placed covers, all the genius of Gary Brooker and the group is firmly intact – organ work is maybe trimmed down a little, but his own vocals and piano are tremendous – as is the overall sense of song structure throughout! Titles include "Fool's Gold", "The Unquiet Zone", "Pandora's Box", "Eight Days A Week", "Without A Doubt", "The Piper's Tune", "I Keep Forgetting", and "Typewriter Torment". CD1 also features the original group recordings – pre-Lieber & Stoller – of most of the tracks. CD2 features Live In The USA – 12 tracks recorded in 1975, at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, New Jersey – and CD3 features Live In The UK – 13 more tracks recorded in 1975 at Leicester University. There's also a huge booklet of notes – and a small poster too. CD

✨✧ SpecialsMore Specials ... LP
Chrysalis, 1980. Very Good ... $13.99
The second great set from The Specials – music once billed as "revival ska" – but which has arguably gone onto have a bigger impact than the first wave of the genre! There's a rough edged quality to the music that's totally great – a rude boy aesthetic filtered through the post-punk generation – perfect for the spare, earthy Two Tone production – and just right for a post-colonial London, looking for new ways to express itself! The studio work is as great as the core grooves from the band – lots of odd echoes and cool effects – kind of a Brit take on Kingston dub, served up beautifully to abstract the tunes. So many others ruined this approach in later years with weaker work – but here's a chance to hear it perfectly in an original conception! Titles include "International Jet Set", "Enjoy Yourself", "Stereotypes", "Holiday Fortnight", and "I Can't Stand It". LP, Vinyl record album

SpecialsSpecials ... LP
2 Tone/Chrysalis, 1980. Near Mint- ... $33.99
One of the most important albums on the mighty 2 Tone label – and part of a huge ska revival on the British scene that would send ripples through modern music for years to come! And sure, the words "ska" and "revival" in the same sentence can often make most folks wince – but The Specials here work at a time long before the mode was reduced to cliche – and during a punk rock period when their contributions were especially vital – presented beautifully here on an album that's also produced by a young Elvis Costello! There's no overdone jams, no schlocky frat boy modes, just hard-edged London ska with a strong nod back to Kingston roots – on titles that include "A Message To You Rudy","Do The Dog", "It's Up To You", "Doesn't Make It Alright", "Concrete Jungle", "Monkey Man", "(Dawning Of A) New Era", "Too Much Too Young", and "Gangsters". A mixture of fusion and soul – with some hard-jamming tracks that bring sometimes brings more of a focus on the groove than the vocals – and other cuts that steer it into a solid pop soul approach! There's a warmth and depth to the production and the songwriting that's a pretty big step away from some of the more synthy sounding soul efforts of the era – definitely giving this album a lift! Paul Jackson Jr plays a bit of guest guitar with the group – and Ollie E Brown drums a bit and produces a few of the tracks. Titles include "Together We Can Shine", "Intuition", "You're Lying", "Throw Away The Key", "There's Love", "Rise & Shine", and "Count On Me". LP, Vinyl record album

2 Tone/Chrysalis, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Killer singles from The Specials – the groundbreaking group who not only re-introduced a side of Jamaican music to the British scene, but also helped a whole new generation fall in love with the funky 45! The tunes here are all ones that were originally issued on those very cool checkerboard label 45s on the UK 2Tone label – an imprint that had a great sense of style right from the start, and which helped bring a perfect focus to the sharp-edged talents of The Specials! So many other groups tried to copy this vibe in later years – but as these sharp singles will show, there's nobody like the originals – as you'll hear on titles that include "Gangsters", "Friday Night Saturday Morning", "Why", "Rudi A Message To You", "Nite Klub", "Too Much Too Young", "Guns Of Navarone", "Rat Race", "Stereotype", "Ghost Town", "War Crimes", "Racist Friend", and "Free Nelson Mandela". Chrysalis/Esoteric (UK), 1974. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
Procol Harum were one of those groups who continued to sound amazing, even way past their initial hits – as you'll discover here on this wonderful gem from 1974! The album's got everything we love in the group very firmly in place – that strange mix of blues roots and drama, fused with loads of great organ and piano lines, and topped with the always-unique vocals of Gary Brooker – a singer who can make even the simplest lyric sound wonderful, but always without ever overstating his case! The balance is hard to describe in words, but it's perfectly Procol-like throughout – on well-penned, well-produced tracks that include "Beyond The Pale", "Nothing But The Truth", "The Idol", "Thin End Of The Wedge", "New Lamps For Old", "Butterfly Boys", and "As Strong As Sampson". 3CD set features an insane amount of material – the bonus tracks "Drunk Again" and "As Strong As Sampson (alt mix)" – plus an 11 track BBC Radio One concert, recorded at the Hippodrome on March 22, 1974 – and a 13 track "live in studio" set recorded in Dallas on July 5, 1974. Chrysalis/Esoteric (UK), 1973. New Copy CD & DVD ... Out Of Stock
Procol Harum check into the Grand Hotel – and check out with one of their greatest albums ever! The set's got that majestic sound that was the group's strongest point – a strange mix of the very personal vocals of Gary Brooker and the expansive blend of piano, organ, and guitar that the group often sent soaring to the skies – augmented here with some perfect use of strings and chorus – never too heavy, but all fused perfectly with the core energy of the sextet! In fact, it's that sense of compression – of folding everything together so well – that really makes the group so great, and such an important precursor for so many acts that were beginning to blossom in the UK scene, using a similar approach in different ways. Yet it's that Gary Brooker/Keith Reid sense of songwriting that still sets these guys apart from anyone else – as you'll hear on titles that include "Grand Hotel", "Tojours L'Amour", "TV Caesar", "A Souvenir Of London", "Robert's Box", "Fires", "For Liquorice John", and "A Rum Tale". Bonus tracks include "Grand Hotel (without orchestra)", and Dave Ball-era recordings of "Bringing Home The Bacon", "Robert's Box", "Tojours L'Amour", and "Fires". DVD features a fantastic Belgian TV special from November of 1973 – with 9 tracks in all! CD

Astor PiazzollaLibertango ... LP
Trova (Italy), 1974. Near Mint- ... $19.99
One of Astor Piazolla's beautiful expanded tango albums from the 70s – really groundbreaking work that still holds up beautifully today! For the set, Piazolla's usual modern bandoneon tangos are augmented by a set of lush orchestral arrangements that have an excellent romantic feel to them – and the resulting sound is like something that might have been lifted from a great 70s Italian soundtrack – extremely evocative and inventive, with a haunting, other-worldly sound at times. This is the sort of stuff that used to get trashed when 80s fans of his work praised a return to "simpler" forms – but we've got to admit, we dig this stuff a lot more, especially because Astor's strength as an orchestral arranger is so fantastic, and the addition of flutes, electric bass, and organ really open his sound up. Titles include "Undertango", "Libertango", "Violentango", and "Novitango". LP, Vinyl record album
