Christian McBrideChristian McBride's New Jawn ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2018. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
Bassist Christian McBride works here with a mighty striking group – a quartet that features Josh Evans on trumpet, Marcus Strickland on tenor and bass clarinet, and Nasheet Waits on drums – all players who give this record an edge that we're not used to hearing from Christian! The music was recorded live in St Louis, which might be part of the sound – but there's clearly a new mode of expression going on here from McBride, especially when he works his bass with lots of offbeat tones and bold moments that really seem to go past the usual! Waits really keeps the energy up too, and Strickland and Evans soar in all the right moments – on titles that include "The Middle Man", "Ballad Of Ernie Washington", "Ke-Kelli Sketch", "Walkin Funny", "Seek The Source", and "Kush". ✨✧ Christian McBride Big BandBringin' It ... CD
Mack Avenue, 2017. Used ... Out Of Stock
Excellent large group material from Christian McBride – an artist who may well be one of the most hard-working men in jazz these days! McBride's big band is always a treat – as the group soars with a soulful energy that matches Christian's smaller group material, but really expands on the energy of his music – yet still always finds a way to make the leader's instrument stand strongly out front – a feat that only a rare few bassists, like Ray Brown, managed to work with a group like this! And yet the bass never seems to overly state itself either – just act with a rich sort of leadership role that sets fire to the horns – in a lineup that includes solo work from Michael Dease on trombone, Steve Wilson on alto, Todd Bashore on flute and alto, Ron Blake on tenor, Rodney Jones on guitar, and Xavier Davis on piano. The album explodes with color and feeling at every twist and turn – and titles include "Thermo", "Youthful Bliss", "Sahara", "Upside Down", "Used Ta Could", "Optimism", and "Gettin To It". CD

Philip BaileyLove Will Find A Way ... CD
Verve, 2019. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
Philip Bailey's looking hipper than usual on the cover – and he's sounding hipper than usual within – thanks to fantastic production help from Robert Glasper, Christian McBride, and Chick Corea – all artists who play on the record, and help give Bailey a really timeless sense of soul! The man himself needs no introduction – thanks to his long legacy in Earth Wind & Fire, and a range of great solo records too – but there's really something different, and something special taking place here – as Bailey pushes both his vocal range and sense of songform, working through music by Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Oscar Brown Jr, and even the Talking Heads – while also turning in some great songs of his own, co-penned with some of the album's collaborators. The instrumentation is served up by a dream group of jazz talents – Kamasi Washington on tenor, Kenny Barron on piano, Robert Glasper and Chick Corea on keyboards, Steve Wilson on saxes and flute, Lionel Loueke on guitar, and Christian McBride on bass – and although the record features guest vocals from Bilal and Casey Benjamin, it's Bailey's work that's the real main attraction. Titles include "We're A Winner", "Stairway To The Stars", "Just To Keep Your Satisfied", "Once In A Lifetime", "Billy Jack", "You're Everything", "Brooklyn Blues", "Sacred Sounds", and "Love Will Find A Way". Gary BartzShadows ... CD
Timeless (Netherlands), 1991. Used ... $8.99
The 90s were a really wonderful decade for reedman Gary Bartz – a time when he seemed to go back to basics, and find a way to open up whole new corners in his music! This album's a key illustration of that moment – as Bartz blows with a sense of darkly brooding power that we never would have expected a decade or two before – this deep sense of pacing and tone that often has us looking to make sure he's not blowing a tenor, instead of the alto and soprano sax listed in the notes. A big part of the album's strength comes from the rest of the group – particularly the solid, soulful rhythm work of Benny Green on piano, Christian McBride on bass, and Victor Lewis on drums – younger players who really help reinvent Bartz for the decade. Willie Williams is also in the quintet on tenor – blowing almost as deeply as Gary – and titles include great versions of McCoy Tyner's "Children Of The Night" and "Peresina", and Coltrane's "Song Of The Underground Railroad" – as well as a surprisingly nice reading of "Holiday For Strings", done here as a real alto workout! ✨✧ Mike ClarkIndigo Blue – Live At The Iridium ... CD
Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 14.98
One of the strongest jazz albums we've heard from drummer Mike Clark in years – a set that burns right from the start, and really lives up to the heavyweight lineup that includes Donald Harrison on alto, Rob Dixon on tenor, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Antonio Farao on piano, and Christian McBride on bass! The tunes are live, and roll out of the gate with tremendous strength and sympathy between the players – and Farao's piano is an especially strong force next to the bass of McBride – this rich undercurrent that just seems to lift everyone up, and help them find their best voice as they roll into the flow. Dixon and Farao contributed some great original material to the set – and titles include "Of Infinity", "Past Lives", "If We Must Die", "Lucky No 7", and "Black Inside". CD

Joe HendersonLush Life – The Music Of Billy Strayhorn ... CD
Verve, 1991. Used ... $4.99
Amazing sounds from Joe Henderson's later years – a completely sublime take on the music of Billy Strayhorn, and a wonderful demonstration of Henderson's mature talents on the tenor! There's a fantastic balance here between darkness and light, grit and clarity, heard in Joe's very first notes on the set – and holding on strong through some of the bolder moments in the set – with work by a shifting lineup, from solo to quintet, that features Wynton Marsalis on trumpet, Stephen Scott on piano, Christian McBride on bass, and Gregory Hutchinson on drums. Yet although Marsalis might be a draw for some folks, we really love it best when Henderson gets to do his own thing – stretching out in these marvelous laidback solos that are heavy on those rich tones he developed in his early years, yet turned towards Strayhorn's brilliant ear for space between the sounds. Titles include "Blood Count", "Isfahan", "Rain Check", "Lotus Blossom", "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing", and "Upper Manhattan Medical Group". CD

Mike LeDonnePartners In Time ... CD
Savant, 2019. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
Mike LeDonne is on piano this time around – not his more-familiar Hammond organ – and he's working in a really fantastic trio with Christian McBride on bass and Lewis Nash on drums! Both players have made lots of wonderful records over the years, but there's something really special about this one – as if LeDonne's bold approach to the piano seems to unlock even more energy in their rhythms – maybe in part because Mike's always partially tuned to the needs of a bassist, which he sometimes handles with his feet on the pedals of the Hammond. Obviously, that's not the case this time around – but he does often play in these bold, blocky ways that are perfect for Nash and McBride to augment – on titles that include "Saud", "Lined With A Groove", "Recovery Blues", "Here's That Rainy Day", "NPS", and "Bopsolete". ✨✧ Harold MabernLookin On The Bright Side ... CD
DIW (Japan), 1993. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A bright, positive set from pianist Harold Mabern – one that's overflowing with soul and spirit – and a perfect example of his strengths during the 90s stretch when his career really took off again! The trio's got a well-balanced approach to rhythm – bold basslines from Christian McBride, whose youthful tones seem to warm up Mabern's music more than ever – and tight drums from Jack DeJohnette, who knows nicely that less is more – and never tries to overwhelm the interplay between Harold and Christian! Titles include "Big Time Cooper", "Moment's Notice", "Look On The Bright Side", "Our Waltz", and "Too Late Fall Back Baby" – a number you might remember from Mabern's Strata East years, sounding mighty nice here, too! ✨✧ Harold Mabern TrioMabern's Grooveyard ... CD
DIW (Japan), 1996. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Forget the hokey cover and title, because this set is one of Harold Mabern's best of the 90s – delivered with that subtle soulfulness that's always made us love his piano work so much! There's a beautifully stripped-down sense of lyricism to the set – as Mabern's work on keys dances around full bass work from Christian McBride, plus some nicely economical drums from Tony Reedus – whose playing here is gentle enough that it's almost letting the bass drive the groove of the set. Mabern follows suit by exploring the deeper ranges of the piano with effortless creativity – stretching out especially well on the album's versions of older jazz standards like "Ladybird", "Jeannine", "Grooveyard", and "Minority" – as well as his own composition "Aon". ✨✧ Harold Mabern TrioMaya With Love ... CD
DIW (Japan), Early 90s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Harold Mabern was one of the greatest under-discovered jazz talents of the 60s – playing on records with artists like The MJT+3, Lee Morgan, and others – and all these years later, he's still one of our favorite talents on the piano! This early 90s set for DIW features Mabern in a trio format, with backing by Christian McBride on bass and Tony Reedus on drums – done in a swirling soulful sound that brings out the most lyrical side of Mabern's playing – this flowing waves of energy he developed strongly from the 70s onward. Titles include "Hymn Of The Orient", "Blue Bossa", "Maybe September", "Lament", and "To Maya Glynne With Love". CD

✨✧ Marlene RosenbergMLK Convergence ... CD
Origin, 2019. Used ... $9.99
Bassist Marlene Rosenberg leads a hell of a trio here – one that features Kenny Barron on piano and Lewis Nash on drums – both tremendous players who sound even better in the round, rich company of Rosenberg's bass! Most titles are trio numbers, but driven as much by the bass as by the always-wonderful work of Barron – and the tunes include many originals by Marlene – instrumentals, but with a current of the more righteous energy promised by the title. One exception is the great "Not The Song I Wanna Sing" – a number that has Rosenberg on vocals while Christian McBride handles the bass – alongside other vocal contributions from Thomas Burrell and Robert Irving III – which help make the song the most political number on the set. Titles include "The Line Between", "American Violet", "Togetherness", "And Still we Rise", "Visions", "The Barron", "Rain", "Love's In Need Of Love Today", and "Not The Song I Wanna Sing". CD

Lauren SevianBliss ... CD
Posi tone, 2018. Used ... $6.99
Mighty strong work from Lauren Sevian – maybe one of the few female baritone saxophonists we can think of, and a hell of a bold talent – from her work on the reeds to her range of strong material composed for the album! The whole thing comes on with a force that we really weren't expecting – especially for a record with a flower on the cover – this rich, soulful sound that doesn't just come from Sevina's baritone, but also from the united power of the quintet that includes Alexa Tarantino on alto, Robert Rodriguez on piano, Christian McBride on bass, and EJ Strickland on drums! The rhythm core is especially strong, and really helps to give the album a strong sense of focus – but then again, with compositions as great as these, they could hardly do anything but – as you'll hear on titles that include "Goldie's Chance", "Bluesishness", Square One", "Triple Water", "Bliss", "In The Loop", and "Lamb & Bunny". ✨✧ Orrin EvansEvolution Of Oneself ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2015. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The title here is very apt – as Orrin Evans is a pianist who seems to be in a constant state of evolution these days – from his wonderful work on larger projects, to his completely sublime sounds in a trio like this! Evans' notes seem even more fluid and cascading than ever – set up beautifully here alongside Christian McBride on bass and Karriem Riggins on drums – in a trio mode that breaks down most previous expectations of a group like this – with this magical dance between rhythm and melody, and a really three-cornered approach to the groove – but one that's clearly inspired by Evans' fantastic work as a leader. There's a bit of added instrumentation from Marvin Sewell on guitar on two tracks, and JD Walter sings on the album's final number – and titles include "For Miles", "Sweet Sid", "Wildwood Flower", "Iz Beatdown Time", "Feb 13th", "Spot It You Got It", and "Ruby Red". Jazzclub (Germany), 1950s/1960s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Sometimes swinging, sometimes a bit more mellow, but a really great collection overall – one that's filled with plenty of great holiday gems from years back – all put together with the same great feel as other titles in the Jazzclub series! Underground grooving from trumpeter Wallace Roney – one of the excellent albums he recorded for the Muse label in the 90s – a wonderfully well-rounded set that's a tremendous tribute to his tone! The group here is every bit as great as Wallace's work in the frontline – Ravi Coltrane on tenor, Geri Allen on piano, Christian McBride on bass, and Kenny Washington on drums – an especially sympathetic rhythm section who bring out some nice warmer touches to offset Roney's occasionally bold tones on trumpet. Tracks are strongly in a traditional soulbop mode – and titles include "Smooch", "Whims Of Chambers", "Lost", "Bemsha Swing", and "Solar". CD
