Chris White & OthersChris White Experience Vol 1 ... CD
Sunfish (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s/2020. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A flurry of lost work from from ex-Zombie, ex-Argent man Chris White – work done by White with a variety of different artists in years that were maybe not that well-represented on record – but which show a strong continuing evolution of his talents! Music was done in collaboration with a variety of artists – including Matthew Fisher, Scott Bennett, Andy Nye, Tim Renwick, and Robert Rosenberg – and although Chris doesn't sing on most tracks, there's a definite post-Zombies, vibe – with maybe some Colin Blunstone phrasing from some of the singers. In a way, the whole thing almost feels like a late 70s/early 80s extension of Blunstone's later solo work – and the set also includes a few tracks from more recent years, when the Zombies re-formed briefly. Titles on this volume include "Good For You Darlin", "Power Over Me", "Trick Of The Sunlight", "Why Can't You Like To Me", "My Love Tonight", "Taking The Wings From Butterflies", "Ride On The Wind", "Like A Shotgun", and "When My Boat Comes In". Chris White & OthersChris White Experience Vol 3 ... CD
Sunfish (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s/2020. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A nice batch of musical nuggets from Chris White – a man who looks pretty mundane on the cover, but who really shines here in a selection of solo work done after his famous years in The Zombies! As with previous volumes, there's a nicely expansive vibe to the music – post-Zombies, post-Argent, but with lots of the elements that made White's work with both groups so great! Rod Argent is part of a great lineup of guests – and Chris did a number of these songs as collaborations with others – in a set list that includes "Man Go Find A Woman", "Loving You", "Up Against The Wall Again", "Can't Seem To Fall In Love", "Celebration", "Out Through The Stars", and "Your Heart Is Mine". Bear Family (Germany), Late 40s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really cool collection of vintage country music Christmas tunes – not just hits, but some excellent obscure material – all pulled together in a way that really lives up to the high standards we expect from the Bear Family label! These tracks are pulled together from a variety of labels and sources, and don't just include cowboy numbers you might guess from the "range" in the title – but also western swing, honky tonk, and maybe a few countrypolitan gems as well! The set features 26 titles in all – with great graphics and notes throughout – to accompany titles that include "Santa Claus Is Coming" by Skeeter Davis, "Santa's On His Way" by Bob Wills, "North Pole Boogie" by Billy Briggs, "Christmas Can't Be Far Away" by Eddie Arnold, "Christmas Time's A-Coming" by Bill Monroe, "Jolly Old St Nicholas" by Wilf Carter, "I Wish Everyday Was Christmas" by Ray Salter, "New Baby For Christmas" by George Jones, "Blue Snowfall" by George Morgan, "White Christmas" by Ernest Tubb, "Christmas Carols By The Old Corral" by Tex Ritter, "No Place Like Home On Christmas" by Little Jimmy Dickens, "It's Christmas Time" by The Louvin Brothers, "Home At Christmas" by Nelson Young, "I'm Gonna Lasso Santa" by Brenda Lee, and "We Wanna See Santa Do The Mambo" by Terry Fell. VariousWheedle's Groove – Kearney Barton ... CD
Light In The Attic, 2009. New Copy Gatefold ... $6.99 14.99
Seattle funk & soul in superbly classic form – and it's all new recordings – featuring a roster of first wave Seattle scene figures and engineered by the the legendary Kearney Barton! All the cuts were recorded in 2008 at Audio Recording, where it all went down in the first place, as chronicled on Light In The Attic's excellent Wheedle's Groove compilation – and this all new set features many of the players from the mid 60s through early 70s Emerald City scene, working as an all star band on funky originals and covers! It's incredible stuff, from the Hammond B3 & Moog funk instrumental "Babyback", to a gospel funk take on "Jesus Christ Pose" featuring Pastor Pat Wright (aka Northern Soul legend Patrinell Staten) and the Total Experience Gospel Choir, to the gritty soul of "HOE" featuring Ural Thomas on vocals and backing by the Muscle Shoals Horns, an anthemic spacey keyboard workout on Marc Moulin's "Humpty Dumpty" and much more. Producer Dynomite D does a wonderful job of putting the pieces together, and the players include members of Black On White Affair, Cookin' Bag, Cold Bold and Together, with Overton Berry on piano, keyboard maestros Ron Buford and Greg Davison, drummers Robbie Hill and John Lee Rodde, vocalists Ural Thomas and Broham (Larry Hammond, Leonard Hammond & Curtis Hammond Jr), guitarists Johnny Horn, Herman Brown and Coleman Brown, bass player Bob Lovelace and others. Other tracks include "Sea Of Glass", "Fools Gold", "Everything Good Is Bad", "Rainy Sea" and "Baddest". CD

✨✧ Jackie WilsonMerry Christmas From Jackie Wilson (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Brunswick/ORG, 1963. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An early Christmas gem from Jackie Wilson – a record that really shows his versatility as a singer, as he takes on a number of different Holiday tunes in a variety of moods! Jackie's a soul singer first and foremost, but he can also sparkle with jazzier and more traditional material – which he touches on here in the company of arrangers Nat Tarnopol, Dick Jacobs, and Alan Lorber. The sound is socking soul on the best numbers – but also gets ambitious and somber on some of the others – making for a nice well-rounded Holiday set, on titles that include "Joy To The World", "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", "Silent Night", "White Christmas", "The First Noel", and "Silver Bells". (Remastered from the original master tapes – first time on vinyl in decades!)

✨✧ VariousMr Santa Claus (Bring Me My Baby) – Classic Soul & R&B Christmas Cuts 1961 to 1963 ... CD
Contrast, Early 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Great Christmas tunes from the early years of soul music – tracks that have their roots in the R&B Christmas modes of the 50s, but also burst out in great new directions too! Some of the tracks feature harmony groups, others feature single artists – and in addition to some of the bluer sounds of the season, there's lots of titles here that sparkle with a newly festive vibe – that upbeat style that you'd also hear on dancefloor soul singles of the period. There's plenty of unfamiliar numbers here – which makes the set a delight to our ears – and titles include "Santa Claus Is Coming" by The Midnighters, "Don't Cry For Me This Xmas" by The Marcels, "New Year Greeting" by Gene McDaniels, "I'll Stay Home" by The Jaynells, "Wish You A Merry Christmas" by Kim Weston, "I Wish You A Merry Christmas" by Big Dee Irwin & Little Eva, "Mr Santa Claus" by Nathaniel Mayer, "Merry Christmas Darling" by The Uniques, "White Christmas" by Darlene Love, "Drive Slow" by Johnny Flamingo, "Christmas Time" by Jan Bradley, "Blue Holiday" by The Shirelles, "Merry Christmas Darling" by Poppa Hop, and "Christmas Greeting" by Gene McDaniels.
