Chris WareAdventures Of Jimmy Corrigan The Smartest Kid On Earth (softcover) ... Book
Pantheon Books, 2003. New Copy ... $6.99 29.99
A major comics achievement! Chris Ware's elliptical Jimmy Corrigan story was serialized over the course of several years in many syndicated newspaper markets. The story, while brilliant and certainly beautiful to look at, was a little hard to follow in weekly installments. Now it's been collected in this handsome book and, taken as a whole, seems even more amazing than we initially estimated. A multi-generational family story that focuses on the simple, sheltered Jimmy Corrigan – and also functions as a neat little history of Chicago – this book can be read from a few different perspectives and like many great books, develops different meanings each time you read it. If you've ever been dubious about the notion of comics as literature, this one should change your mind – and it's very funny and moving stuff! Softcover edition, almost 500 pages, full color. Book

✨✧ Chris WareRusty Brown (hardcover) ... Book
Pantheon Books, 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
We love the work of cartoonist Chris Ware, but we maybe love his Rusty Brown character even more than the rest – as Rusty's an inveterate collector, with the sort of special drive that's plagued us all of our lives! Yet the depth of this volume really matches Ware's more famous character Jimmy Corrigan – as the long narratives here trace out the "origins" of Rusty, and follow him through years past – with a sensitivity and lingering sadness that's beautifully delineated in the kind of artwork that sets Ware apart from anyone else we can think of. The production quality is beautiful – hundreds of pages in full color, laid out sideways to replicate a book of vintage comic strips – which furthers the Ware exploration of the Rusty Brown aesthetic. VariousErnie Kovacs Record Collection ... CD
Varese, 1950s/1997. Used ... $11.99
A nutty idea, but a great one! TV genius Ernie Kovacs was always noted for his dedication to using weird and goofy music in his insane video skits – and this CD by Varese brings together 20 tracks that made appearances in his classic shows from the 1950's. The compilation stands as some sort of crazy loungey collection, but with a much goofier edge than usual. The CD includes a number of weird original songs from the show – with some vocals by Kovacs and wife Edie Adams – plus other stuff borrowed from Esquivel, Ferrante & Teicher, Tony DeSimone, Robert Maxwell, Yma Sumac, LeRoy Holmes, and others. Very nicely packaged in a cool cover by Chris Ware, and a good set of notes! CD

Pastor TL Barrett & Youth For Christ ChoirDo Not Pass Me By – Vol 2 ... LP
Universal Awareness/Numero, 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
The even more obscure second volume to the great soul/gospel classic Do Not Pass Me By – and like the first, the product of a wonderfully spiritual setting on Chicago's south side – music created in the church, but with all the same vibe as the hippest secular soul coming from the Windy City in the early 70s! The set does a great job of alternating strong lead singers with the rest of the group – a bit like Voices Of East Harlem, but with more of a larger ensemble feel – and there's some really wonderful moments on the record throughout – even a bit of funk amidst the more righteous soul-styled tunes. Tracks include "I Shall Wear A Crown", "O Sinner", "I Want To Be In Love With You", "Do Not Pass Me By", "O What A Day", "Here I Am", and "There Is Only One". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Was Not WasOut Come The Freaks ... CD
Ze (France), Early 80s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Don Was come back! All is forgiven! For years, we'd thought poorly of you because of later projects, but going back to this classic early album for Ze Records, we now realize what a genius you were! Like other sets on Ze at the time, this one's a brilliant blend of funk, punk, rock, and soul – done with a post-P Funk approach to the grooves that puts plenty of bass on the bottoms, and which also flows lots of other interesting instrumentation into the grooves to keep things fresh. The production is stellar – soulful, bouncing, and joyously aware of every element of the full album's potential – and the whole album's a lively ensemble affair that features work by artists as diverse as Wayne Kramer, Marcus Belgrave, and Sweet Pea Atkinson! CD is greatly expanded from the original, and titles include "Oh Mr Friction", "Wheel Me Out (long version)", "Out Come The Freaks", "Hello Operator (short)", "It's An Attack", "Carry Me Back To Old Morocco", "Christmas Time In Motor City", "Tell Me That I'm Dreaming", and some nice bonus mixes!
