Chip WickhamLa Sombra ... LP
Lovemonk (Spain), 2017. New Copy ... $16.99
Sublime spiritual sounds from reedman Chip Wickham – part of the new revival of soulful 70s modes that we see in the music of Nat Birchall and Matthew Halsall! Chip lists both of these musicians as key influence in the notes, and we can definitely hear that in the music, too – which is a mix of modal groovers and more spacious numbers that blossom with Strata East-like energy – all handled by a great quartet that features Chip on both flute and tenor, plus Gabriel Casanova on piano, David Salvador on bass, and Antonio Pax on both drums and vibes. The music also has some hip European echoes – with styles that recall older work by Harold McNair on the flute numbers, or maybe the best of the Saba/MPS acoustic years. Easily the most righteous album ever issued by the Lovemonk label – with titles that include "Sling Shot", "Red Planet", "The Detour", "La Sombra", "Pushed Too Far", and "La Leyenda Del Tiempo". Chip WickhamShamal Wind ... CD
Lovemonk (Spain), 2018. New Copy ... $12.99
Beautiful sounds from Chip Wickham – a spiritual reedman who can be light on the flute at some points, then go deep on baritone sax at others – really showing this strong range of expression that's as powerful as the modal rhythms in his music! We totally loved Chip's first album, and like this one even more – and we'd easily rank up right up there with the best of the younger spiritual jazz generation – which would include trumpeter Matthew Halsall and saxophonist Nat Birchall – and Halsall actually makes a guest appearance on one track too. Yet the album's very clearly Wickham's own – with beautifully snaking lines on both conventional flute and alto flute, plus baritone sax – in a combo that features vibes, piano, bass, drums, and percussion. Titles include "Soho Strut", "Barrio 71", "Snake Eyes", "Shamal Wind", "The Mirage", and "Rebel No 23". CD
Also available Shamal Wind ... LP 16.99
