ChasePure Music/Chase ... CD
Epic/Vocalion (UK), 1971/1974. New Copy ... $18.99
A pair of albums from Chase – one of the hippest jazz rock combos of the 70s! The self-titled Chase album first burned onto the market in 1971 – and it's a great distillation of a groove that was bubbling around in various other segments at the time – some of the tighter big band rhythms of the late 60s, as you might find in the work of Maynard Ferguson or Woody Herman – mixed with the hipper rhythms from the rockish underground, particularly in the work of Blood Sweat & Tears or Chicago. Chase is a fair bit jazzier than both of those groups – as they often put the horns more upfront than the vocals – although most numbers do have some sort of vocals as well. Instrumentation is heavy on trumpets – which come together in blasting, blaring groove, even despite the smaller size of the combo – and Phil Porter lays down some great keyboard lines that really help some of the best tracks cook nicely. Titles include "Handbags & Gladrags", "Livin In Heat", "Open Up Wide", "Hello Groceries", "Boys & Girls Together", and "Invitation To A River". Ennea is a jazz rock classic that still sounds pretty darn tasty today – forged on the heels of Chicago and Blood Sweat & Tears, but with a sound that's leaner and meaner! The group's led by trumpeter Bill Chase – hence their name – and features lead vocals by GG Shinn and Terry Richards, both in a style that's got the same blue-eyed jazz soul overtones as that used by the groups mentioned above. The real strength of the tracks, though, is their jazzy backings – horn-heavy, as you'd expect, and hitting some great riffs and licks on the album's side-long title "suite", which features many instrumental passages. Titles include "Hades", "Aphrodite (parts 1 & 2)", "Zeus", "Poseidon", "Cronus", "It Won't Be Long", "I Can Feel It", and "Night". CD
(Hybrid Super Audio CD pressing – also works on standard CD players!)

A killer – and one of the greatest records ever cut on Bethlehem! Charlie Rouse and Paul Quinichette go head to head in a hard-blown session that's very different than most of the work on Bethlehem – grooving in a free-wheeling "chase" mode, as you might guess from the title – with lots of heavy tenor in the lead, cooking at a level that's more like a Prestige or Savoy session from the 50s! The group's as tight as can be – with some killer drum work from Ed Thigpen, and piano by either Wynton Kelly or Hank Jones. ✨✧ Soul SugarChase The Light ... LP
Gee (France), 2017. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Funky keyboards and dubby grooves – a great little record that's as much inspired by Jamaican music as it is the longer legacy of American funky jazz! Soul Sugar first started giving us 45s about a decade ago, but their sound has really matured over the years – as leader/keyboard maestro Guillaume Metenier has gained even more control over his Hammond, Fender Rhodes, clavinet, and minimoog – and also picked up plenty of sweet keys along the way! The rest of the instrumentation on the set mostly just comes from bass and drums – but there's a sonic layering approach that really makes for a deep, rich vibe throughout – completely badass in approach, with none of the fakery that you might get if a less-skilled musician were trying to fuse two musical worlds together. Three tracks feature vocals, and the legendary Lonnie Smith guests on one track too – and titles include "Big Car", "East Of The River Nile", "Take A Chance", "19 Miles To Kingston", "Why Can't We Live Together", "Mellow Mood", and "Get Up & Get It". Amerigo Gazaway's jazzy soul steeped beats for the graffiti documentary No Free Walls! It captures the spirit of 90s era hip hop and graff culture incredibly well with the persistent headnodding beats, a way of capturing jazzy bits of bass and horns that wouldn't be out of place on a classic Gangstarr LP, and occasional turntable scratches. Strong stuff! Includes "Get Out", "Step Up", "Word Life", "Breakszilla", "98 Posse", "Feel The Groove", "Represent", "The Chase", "Lost Tribe" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

Cinematic hip hop soul from Anderson.Paak named after a seaside city west of Los Angeles, CA – but it's not Malibu, it's the stunning follow up Oxnard – a little looser, more diverse, and ultimately just as impressive set from this still rising talent! The uber-impressive guest list including Kadhja Bonet, Norelle, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop, Dre, Pusha T, J Cole, Q-Tip and more but this is the sprawling Anderson.Paak show all the way, his distinctive blend of Cali sunshine and nighttime music and mood, his gritty-smooth voice so masterfully going back & forth from singing to rhyming, the production breathtaking from the stripped down beats, bass and vocals focused tracks to grander and more densely layered material. ✨✧ Edwin Astley/Tony CrombieInternational Detective/Man From Interpol ... CD
El (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $3.99 13.99
A pair of cool British TV soundtracks – both of which feature an action jazz style to rival the best early work of Henry Mancini for the television screen! First up is lost spy soundtrack work from the British composer Edwin Astley – best known for his work on The Saint and Danger Man, but also sounding pretty darn great on the earlier program International Detective! The feel here is similar to some of Astley's better-known work – a more dramatic take on the crime jazz used on American TV in the late 50s – one that retains much of the instrumental elements of the sound, especially the well-placed use of saxes – but which also uses larger orchestrations to flesh out the music nicely, creating a stronger, more cinematic feel. The set features a total of 21 tracks from this short-lived show – and titles include "International Detective", "Murder Strip", "Theme For Larceny", "Night Patrol", "The Badge", "Manhunt", "Shock Tactics", "Murder Chase", and "Concerto In Law". Next is Man From Interpol – one of the best spy soundtracks we've ever heard – and one of the only scores we've ever seen from Brit jazz drummer Tony Crombie! The work was done a few years before Barry's famous Bond scores – but it's got a very similar feel, with lots of driving themes that make the best use of brazen horns, fast jazz, and beat-styled rhythms that crackle throughout the set. Most titles are pretty short, but really great – and nearly all of them feature some extremely strong jazz musicianship, in the manner of that used on the best American soundtracks by Mancini at the time! Titles include "Panic Station", "Interpol Cha Cha Cha", "Interpol Chase", "Samba De Janeiro", and "Blues Macabre". CD

Bee Gees/Richard Hewson OrchestraLove Melody ... LP
Atco, 1971. Very Good+ ... $6.99
A very groovy soundtrack to this cool British film – starring a young Jack Wild in his pre-HR Puffenstuff days! The film's kind of a mod kids film – with a number of bright and peppy tunes mixed with others that are either more serious or more jazzy – a blend of rock and more familiar soundtrack instrumentation that really keeps things interesting! The Bee Gees contribute a number of great tracks – like "Melody Fair", "In The Morning", "First Of May", and "To Love Somebody". Even better, though, are the instrumental bits by the Richard Hewson Orchestra – which include "Teacher's Chase", a killer groover with some sweet electric harpsichord and strings, plus the cuts "Working On It Night & Day", "Spicks & Spacks", and "Melody Fair". Peter Knight put the whole thing together, too! LP, Vinyl record album

James Brown gets even better than before – working here in the setting of a blacksploitation soundtracks – which makes the album a doubly funky outing from the 70s! James is a master throughout – beating Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield at their own games – as he works with super-tight work from the JBs, plus a bit of vocals from Lyn Collins – all in a massive batch of tracks that further expand his funky palette! Unlike other blacksploitation soundtracks, which usually have one or two key funky tunes, this one's almost entirely overflowing with gems – including Lyn Collins on a version of "Mama Feelgood" that's worth the price of the record alone! The whole thing's great, though – and titles include the classic "Down & Out in New York City", plus "Blind Man Can See It", "Sportin' Life", "The Boss", "Dirty Harri", and "Chase". A great little soundtrack from trash maestro Nicholas Carras – not one of the bigger names in mainstream cinema scoring at the start of the 60s – but in a way that really lets him take off and get creative with a record like this! The album's got a leadoff rock tune, some jazzier charts – ala Elmer Bernstein – and a mix of dramatic orchestrations with moodier, mellower passages – almost currents of exotica at times, all put together to create more than enough drama away from the images on the screen! Titles include "Teen Bleus", "Vegas Express", "Jazz Chase", "Fight", "7D", "Lover's Reunion", "High Spot", "Bluesy Mysterio", and "Gang Stalks Rick". LP, Vinyl record album

Guido & Maurizio De AngelisIl Grande Racket (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Chris' Soundtrack Corner (Germany), 1976. New Copy ... $11.99
Fierce funky sounds from Guido & Maurizio DeAngelis – a duo who turned out some of the grooviest music on the Italian cop/crime scene of the 70s! The set's a killer right from the very first note – full of fuzz and funk, and lots of heavy rhythms at the bottom – all in a mode that's free from some of the disco touches that came into Italian cinema a few years later – and served up in these short, sharp tunes that pack a hell of a lot of punch into a very short space! The basslines are nicely offbeat – never just copping an American funk mode, but instead in this very driving, dramatic Italo-crime mode that's totally wonderful – that sense of urgency that can only come from a rooftop fight in Rome, or a car chase down the streets of Milano. Titles include "Caccia All'Uomo", "Visioni", "Il Grande Racket", "Ultimo Inseguimento", "The Taste Of Love", and "Seconda Allucinazione". CD features lots of bonus tracks – 37 titles in all! CD

Billy Cobham joins the Breckers on the set – and titles include "Devil Lady", "15 Miles To Provo", 'The Maryanne", "Holli Be Home", "try Me", "Dream Suite" and "New York". LP, Vinyl record album

Never-heard music from the legendary Erroll Garner – unissued studio recordings from the end of the 60s and the start of the 70s – brought together here to form one of the most striking albums in his catalog! Garner's perhaps a bit more intimate in these settings, and is certainly more developed, too – playing with a complexity that's breathtaking, and which maybe surpasses some of his commercial albums from the time – a sense of tone, color, and timing that hew strongly to his legacy, but also open up a constant array of surprises along the way. Most numbers are in a "trio plus" mode – with drums from Jimmie Smith, bass from Ike Issacs or Ernest McCarty, and some great congas from Jose Mangual – who brings an extra rhythmic kick that really seems to set Erroll free. Very short themes from these two giants of the Brit sound library scene – some of them funky, some of sweet, all of them pretty darn great! Many numbers have a very stark, spare approach – one drum pattern, a slightly more complicated bassline, then more creative work on keyboards or guitar – all used in these ways that echo with the grooviest qualities of late 60s British TV and broadcasting – which is no surprise, given that most of these tracks were geared towards those settings! David Hess's chillingly great soundtrack to one of the most notorious horror movies of the 70s – Wes Craven's Last House On The Left! Hess's musical pedigree is that of a folk and rock songwriter – and one of the things that makes his songs for Last House On The Left so effective is the way his delicate, tuneful songcraft contrasts with the terrifyingly real sadism and revenge on screen. A tight debut from Lasperanza – aka arranger producer Rico Garofalo, who put together the whole set as a tribute to older jazz, funk, and soul that laid the seeds for his own music in recent years! The record has a vibe that's a bit like that strong UK soul tradition started with Incognito, and carried forth by a number of other artists in recent years – with a really strong vision at the core, handled by a musician who's also a maestro in the studio – who then opens the door to a shifting array of singers who really make the record sparkle with a great sense of variety! The movie came from the same producers as Mondo Cane – also scored by Ortolani – and the style here has the same mix of very scene-specific instrumentals that shift very much throughout the cores of the set. The music was penned and conducted by Johnny Pate – of Shaft In Africa and Brother On The Run fame – and the tunes are a great blend of funky soundtrack styles that include full on big band, sparer snapping instrumentals, and even a few nice tunes with great use of moog! Titles include "Chase", "Stepping", "Bar Fly", "Check In", "Freeze", "Love Theme", "Call It In", "Sneaking It In", and "Spin". LP, Vinyl record album

PropagandaSecret Wish ... LP
Island, 1985. Very Good+ ... $7.99
One of the great lost moments in the career of Trevor Horn – and the only real full album from Propaganda! The group have an approach that has bits of the Art of Noise love of sound texture, and which also seems to borrow a bit from the German electronics of the early 80s – but fuses the groove into a more straightforward Factory Records-ish sort of sound. A few tunes get a bit hokey at times, but there's also some great numbers here that were key crossovers in the later wave of the 80s import invasion to American club – and which played well in the Chicago house scene. Tracks include "Dream Within A Dream", "Murder Of Love", "Jewel", "Del", "P-Machinery", "Sorry For Laughing", "Dr Mabuse", "Chase", "Last Word/Strength To Dream". LP, Vinyl record album

A great set by pianist Mike Wofford – small combo versions of some of the tunes that LA bandleader Gerald Wilson cut for Pacific Jazz back in the 60s! The group on the set is wonderful – warm, tight, and with a complicated soulful groove that you wouldn't expect. Wofford plays acoustic piano, and is joined by Rufus Reid on bass, Carl Burnett on drums, and Richie Gajate Garcia on percussion, who brings a nice Latinized touch to the set, in keeping with some of Wilson's better arrangements. VariousHorn Rock & Funky Guitar Grooves 1968 to 1974 ... LP
BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP ... $19.99 24.99
Funky sounds from a time when jazz and rock music instrumentation collided – and came up with a bastard child that was unfortunately named "jazz rock", and which kept some folks away from some surprisingly groovy records back in the day! Don't let that moniker get you down – as it's way more dated than the music on this set, and hardly gets at the soul-drenched style of the grooves – which often owe more to the horn sections of Memphis and Muscle Shoals records from earlier in the 60s, than they do from any higher attempt to merge the worlds of highbrow jazz and long-haired rock! In truth, most of these groups were probably raised on equal parts soul with all the other styles they were drinking up – and they probably also picked up a few members who got young training in school bands, then found a way to work with their guitar-playing friends – adding plenty of color and tone to the drums and bass that really drive the tunes. The set is a wonderful introduction to the genre – and not only mixes a few key classics with lots of overlooked gems – but also touches on some of the funkier nuggets that have been sampled over the years. Titles include "Toe Hold" by Al Kooper, "Run Back To Mama" by Chase, "Clown (part 1)" by The Flock, "One Fine Morning (LP version)" by Lighthouse, "It's Been A Long Time Coming" by Delaney & Bonnie, "Understanding" by Cold Blood, "Somebody Oughta Turn Your Head Around" by Crystal Mansion, "Tuane" by Hammer, "Roller Coaster" by Blood Sweat & Tears, "Clever Girl" by Tower Of Power, "Aunt Marie" by American Sound Ltd, "Gypsy Boy II" by Tobias Wood Henderson, "Blow Your Mind" by Donnie Brooks, "Boomp Boomp Chomp" by The Sons, and "Shoes" by Black Magic. They're not lying about the title of this one – as the set is both "magnificent", and "insane" – an incredible array of offbeat singles from a time when it seemed like just about everybody and their pop had a small record label – and were able to turn out some really mad music that still defies description or categorization all these many years later! Given the Cramps' name on the set, there's a definite current of raunch rock here – but the music also opens up into so many different modes – from R&B, to novelty numbers, to hillbilly sounds, space age instrumentals, fuzz guitar jams, and lots lots more! The whole thing is every bit as wonderful as the previous versions in the series – and titles include "Bila" by Versatones, "The Blob" by The Five Blobs, "Oo Ee" by Ric Cartey, "Little Girl" by John & Jackie, "Wait Up Baby" by The Duals "You're Gone Baby" by Jimmy Lloyd, "Ghost Train" by The Electro-Tones, "Ghost Satellite" by Bob & Jerry, "Real Wild Child" by Ivan, "The UT" by The Sparkles, "The Heel" by Kay Martin, "Flip Top Box" by Dicky Doo & The Don'ts, "Hold It" by Buddy Starr & The Starliners, "Teen Twist" by Buddy Miller, and "The Chase (part 2)" by The Camelots. Funky genius from Con Funk Shun – a pair of late 70s albums – together in a single set! Loveshine finds the group working under the production helm of Skip Scarborough, who seems to give them an even sharper edge than usual! The album's filled with those tightly compressed rhythms that Skip was so great in producing back in the 70s – grooves that seem to make more out of doing less – and which have a sense of space and timing that's totally impeccable. There's a few light jazzy touches at times too – bits of flute, sax, and organ that bring in a nice sense of depth, and which takes it far past easily classified funk! Titles include "So Easy", "Shake & Dance With Me", "When The Feelings Right", "I Think I Found The Answer", "Wanna Be There", "Can't Go Away", "So Easy", and "Magic Woman". Con Funk Shun really hit a tight groove Candy – late 70s dancefloor funk at its finest – and a turning point for the group that set the scene for 80s grooves to come! The killer group vocals, thumping funk bass and punctuating horn blasts are in full effect, and the group is also starting to work more with synthesizers and electronic sound washes – the spacey touches blending perfectly with their tried-and-true funk. A great batch of tunes, well-produced by the group and Skip Scarborough, and ear-pleasing tunes all the way – sparkling with a great blend of bassy funk and smooth ballads! Some cuts are straight trippy rock numbers – in a mode that's somewhere between the Barbarella soundtrack and work on some of the AIP soundtracks on Tower – but then there's also some cool instrumentals, with a mixture of easy instrumentation and 60s rock effects. One Way Static, 1972. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The other thing that makes it so effective, is that Hess himself portrays the despicable Krug in the film – taking part in said cruelty! The soundtrack has Hess's oddly lovely little songs, along with some incidental period touches, swatches of dialogue and instrumental bits – composed in collaboration with Steve Chapin. This version from One Way Static is totally top notch, too – with liner notes by exploitation cinema and genre veterans Ruggero Deodato, Franco Nero, Ulli Lommel and others. A tremendous turning point in the career of James Brown – and an album that points the way strongly to the even deeper funk of the 70s! The album's a hard-wailing batch of instrumental tracks played by the legendary James Brown Band of the late 60s – the pre-JBs ensemble that's gone onto have possibly even more funky influence than the Godfather's combo in the 70s! James plays organ on the set – and supposedly a bit of guitar and drums (according to the notes) – but one of the main stars here is Pee Wee Ellis, whose alto lines really cook up some of the best tracks strongly. Yet possibly even more amazing is the overall rhythmic conception – tight, focused, and always on the money – snapping with a sharpness that's mindblowing even all these many years later – a whole new dimension in funky expression, hardly ever matched since! Hard-romping soul from the great Shirley Ellis – a singer most folks know for a single crossover hit – but an artist who's got a hell of a lot more to offer than just that novelty number! This excellent package is a long-overdue look at one of the queens of raw soul in the 60s – a singer who could belt it out with a hell of an edge, even when the music was moving at a mighty fast clip – which it does often here, as Shirley works with superb guidance from arranger Lincoln Chase – whose ears for a groove are outstanding at this point in his career! Wonderful lost work from Michel Legrand – a fantastic, and fantastically overlooked, 70s soundtrack – completely essential to have in a CD version like this, since most of the music hardly appeared in the film at all! The score takes off nicely from some of Legrand's more famous work of the 60s and early 70s – with a mixture of warm themes, jazzy elements, and some of the funkier touches you'd expect from a cop/crime film – all at a level that's a bit less sentimental than some of his French film work, with just the right qualities to fit the offbeat story of the movie. There's a real Dave Grusin sort of approach going on at times – although with a bit more acoustic piano than electric keyboards – but Legrand also throws in a few softer bits to round things out nicely, and create a lot more depth in the music than you might expect for a low-budget film. Really great stuff overall – the kind of soundtrack that should have gotten proper release at the time, as it easily matches any of Legrand's bigger LP hits – and presented with great notes on both the film and music. Titles include "Papa Joe The Padrone", "Downtown", "Wall Street", "The Chase", "The Sleep Song", "The Sellers", and "Uptown". CD

✨✧ Taj Mahal/Lightnin HopkinsSounder ... CD
Columbia/Varese, 1972. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the rootsiest albums ever recorded by Taj Mahal – a set that begins with a song by Lightnin Hopkins, then seems to have Taj echoing a lot of the spareness of that work! The film's set in the 30s, and the music is very rootsy rural blues – with just Taj Mahal on vocals, steel-bodied guitar, harmonica, and even a bit of banjo and fife – served up in ways that almost make the whole thing feel like a Folkways recording, instead of an album done for Columbia. Tunes are often short, and a mix of vocals and instrumentals – and Lightnin Hopkins sings "Needed Time" – while the others include "Just Workin", "Jailhouse Blues", "I'm Running & I'm Happy", "Harriet's Dance Song", "Two Spirits Reunited", "Sounder Chase A Coon", and "Speedball". War did the music for this funky soundtrack to an early Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs film, and although most of the stuff on here is just typical War stuff, there's one track called "Flying Machine" that's a long funky chase scene-type track that's worth the price of the album alone! ✨✧ John Lee & Gerry BrownChaser ... LP
Columbia, 1979. Very Good+ ... $1.99
John Lee & Gerry Brown were one of the best European fusion rhythm sections of the 70s – laying down great spacey drums and rumbling funky basslines on a large number of excellent LPs in the earlier part of the decade for Blue Note and a host of other labels. By the time of this release, they'd smoothed out the funk a bit – and here, they're going for a sound that's more in line with some of the mainstream fusion that Columbia was issuing at the time. The record features lots of moog and keyboards, and an all-electric sound with lots of compressed guitar. Titles include "Daily Planets", "What It If", "New Waves", and "Prospect Park". Classic 60s work from Thelonious Monk – featuring his incredible quartet with Charlie Rouse on tenor, certainly Monk's best-ever musical soulmate! The album features some newer versions of older tunes, and a few written just for the album – but the source of the material is not important, as the Monk/Rouse treatment always transforms whatever is handled, and recreates the work as an an angular sculpture of modernist beauty. Other players include Larry Gales on bass and Ben Riley on drums – and titles include "Locomotive", "Blue Sea", "We See", "Japanese Folk Song", and "Straight No Chaser". One of Mose's mid 60s albums for Atlantic – recorded live, with a bit more of a hip flair than some of his earlier work for Prestige and Columbia, but still with those great vocals that went onto influence a generation of beatnik jazz singers. Mose has more than a bit of New Orleans in his tone – but he's also got some northern distance from his material, bringing a nice bit of wit into the recordings. ✨✧ Chris ByarsHundred Years From Today ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 2019. New Copy ... $15.99 19.99
The album's titled after an old jazz standard by Victor Young, but the whole thing is very much a personal statement from tenorist Chris Byars – who wrote every other track on the record, and who really comes across here with a voice that seems even more distinct than ever! Maybe part of that voice is the album's setting – as Byars blows in a piano-less sextet alongside John Mosca on trombone, Zaid Nasser on alto, and Stefano Doglioni on bass clarinet – a trio whose unified sound often provides a nicely colorful backdrop for Byars' solos, and who also swing in ways that are a bit unusual too. The approach is rooted in older west coast modes, but comes across here in a very fresh way – given a nice snap on rhythm from Ari Roland on bass and Phil Stewart on drums. Titles include "Flight", "Incognito", "Mountain Top", "Intention", "Lovelace", and "All The Things Are Redd". CD

Coastal CountyCoastal County ... LP
Preservation (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $19.99
Their name and cover may be a bit obscure, but Coastal County do a fantastic job of paying tribute to the glory days of both the sound library and soundscape scene – somehow managing to work together influences from both David Axelrod and the best of the KPM scene! The music is all instrumental, and the tracks have the kind of currents that you'd hear on older UK and EU sound library gems – but there's also a moodier, earthier sense of production – with lots of shadows around the edges, and spooky currents that really give the whole thing a lot of depth – handled with just as much vintage care as the instrumentation – which is filled with funky drums, moody basslines, and just the right amount of fuzz on the guitar.. In a world where so many others claim influence from the old school, but can hardly deliver the right sort of sound, these guys do a superb job – on titles that include "The Chaser", "Holy Monday", "Supra Naturel", "The Landing", "The Drop", and "Cielo Aperto". Al Cohn, Dexter Gordon, Barry Harris, et alSilver Blue ... LP
Xanadu, 1977. Very Good+ ... $6.99
Some of the most cooking work of the 70s from Dexter Gordon – and that's saying a lot, given all his overseas sessions and late-life work for Columbia Records! The format here is different than both of those, though – in that it's both a sharp hardbop set, with a real back-to-basics vibe – but also one that has much more of an overall group feel, instead of some of the longer-form solo vehicles that Gordon recorded for Steeplechase Records. There's definitely a blowing session vibe – tracks are long, and there's multiple soloists who each get extended time in the spotlight – but there's also a careful sense of structure, brought to the record no doubt by producer Don Schlitten – who'd handled classic dates in the past for Prestige. The group features both Gordon and Al Cohn on tenors, Blue Mitchell and Sam Noto on trumpets, Barry Harris on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums – a hell of a lineup that really makes magic on "On The Trail", "Allen's Alley", and "Silver Blue". Albert DaileyThat Old Feeling ... LP
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1979. Near Mint- ... $14.99
One of the few 70s albums as a leader from pianist Albert Dailey – a player who was making great magic with Stan Getz at the time, but who also seems to have a completely different voice on his own! Dailey's got a way of being open, joyous, and very creative – but always in a style that's never too familiar, nor ever aping the modes of some of his more famous 70s contemporaries – which creates a very fresh sound to the whole record, that kind of special, stand-alone spirit that maybe graces some of the best of the Japanese-recorded trio dates of the 70s, and a rare few American sessions too. Accompaniment is superb – Buster Williams on bass and Billy Hart on drums – both players with more than enough imagination to both keep up with Dailey's creativity, and augment him in just the right way – on titles that include "Body & Soul", "Yesterdays", "Lover Man", "Music That Makes Me Dance", and "That Old Feeling". A set recorded during the same space as the previous album from Walt Dickerson and Richard Davis – but sometimes with a slightly different feeling in the sound! There's definitely some of the tenderness promised by the title – especially at those great points when the colors of Dickerson's vibes are flowing beautifully next to Davis' mellow basslines. But there's also other points that are a bit more dynamic, too – bold notes from Walt that have this sense of texture that's really amazing – followed by equally wonderful sounds from Richard. Steeplechase (Denmark), 2018. New Copy ... $15.99 19.99
Guitarist Pierre Dorge has been giving us amazing music for many years – but he sounds especially amazing here in the company of a really great group – the excellent Kirk Knuffke on cornet, plus Stephen Riley on tenor, Conrad Herwig on trombone, Jay Anderson on bass, and Adam Nussbaum on drums – all very dynamic players who seem to make Dorge sound even fresher than ever! There's an especially strong sense of phrasing on the record – no surprise, especially with Knuffke in the mix – and while Pierre can sometimes use his instrument in more abstract ways, that quality is really balanced by all the other members of the lineup. Anderson's bass is great – nicely pointed at the best moments, and a great contrast to Dorge's strings – and all tracks are originals, with titles that include "Lullaby For Sun Ra", "Mingus' Birthday Party", "Afrikaa Mbizo Dyani", "Sim Sim Ba", and "Alligator In Paradise". Yonca/Matsuli (UK), 1976. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $29.99
One of the hippest albums we've ever heard from bassist Johnny Dyani – and that's saying a lot, given his tremendous records of the 70s! The album's different than the album that Johnny recorded with fellow Blue Notes members on the Steeplechase label – and instead, the group here is led by percussionist Okay Temiz, and mixes Johnny's round, bold lines on acoustic bass with additional electric bass, plus clarinet and saxes too! The tunes are heavily rhythmic – still jazz, but with very strong global currents too – an even rootsier vibe than most jazz of the South African scene from whence Dyani came – in a mode that really seems to set him free. Johnny also plays a bit of piano, too – and the tracks are a mix of Dyani originals, plus Temiz arrangements of traditional Turkish tunes. Amazing! Earth Wind & Fire's ultimate moment of the 70s – and a perfect blending of all their influences that stands as a lasting tribute to their super-huge effect on soul music! The record features all aspects of the band coming into perfect cohesion – bassy funk, mellow soul, and afrocentric jazz – all expertly handled by the great Charles Stepney, who still has the same rich talent for blending styles that he had while working at Chess/Cadet during the glory days of the late 60s. Some of these songs have been played to death (and covered so much) over the years that it's often easy to forget what a crowning moment this was for former underground soul heroes Earth Wind & Fire – but we'll never cease to be amazed at the power of their mid 70s work, and this album's the best of the best. Early work from Sterling Harrison – a soul singer who was mostly missed the first time around, but has had more of a revival in recent decades – although maybe not as strongly as on this obscure west coast album recorded with the production team of Holland Dozier Holland! This isn't Motown HDH, nor even their Invictus/Hot Wax style – as the album has a strong 80s soul vibe throughout, with lots of beats, keyboards, and catchy numbers in a boogie funk mode – yet it's also clear the top-shelf studio help really gives the record a lot more focus and punch than other efforts of this nature, in a way that mixes Sterling's deep soul vocal inclinations with some material that could have crossed over at the time.
