Charly AntoliniSpecial Delivery ... LP
MPS (Germany), 1980. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A later record by drummer Charly Antolini, and still a very tasty bit of MPS jazz – with a mix of styles that recalls his classic albums for the label, and a list of players that includes Dieter Reith on keyboards, Heinz Von Hermann on saxes, and Lee Harper on trumpet! There's a great Latin-y groover called "Senor Hoche", a nice fusion cut called "Like A Swimming Pool", and the drums-only "Drums A Capella". LP, Vinyl record album

Charly (UK), Mid 60s/1984. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great compilation of heavenly soul tracks by this successful mid 60s combo! The record includes the group's monster crossover hit "Our Day Will Come", plus lots of other nicer stuff that's pretty darn hard to find – like "The End Of The World", "Does He Really Care for Me", "Moonlight & Music", and "I Cry Alone". Nice notes, good sound, and a nice one to have until the originals come around (if they ever come around!) LP, Vinyl record album

John ColtraneComplete Graz Concert ... CD
Charly (UK), 1962. Used 2CD ... $11.99
Fantastic material from an important early tour of Europe by the John Coltrane Quartet – tracks recorded in Graz, Austria – and a perfect example of the group as they were really beginning to stretch out and explore! At some level, the vibe here is like the famous first run of Village Vanguard sessions by Coltrane – but the sound shows just how much the players had opened up since the previous year – really tremendous work from the leader on both soprano sax and tenor, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums! Earl GainesYearning & Burning ... LP
Charly (UK), Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $9.99
Some of the best work ever done by southern soul singer Earl Gaines – a blues-tinged vocalist who recorded for Excello, King, and HBR – but who's heard here on some key sides for Sound Stage Seven from the early 70s! The work here is easily some of Earl's best – as the tracks have his voice mellowing nicely with a bit of age, but also hitting some of the funkier sides of the 70s – a mode that inflects older Tennessee bluesy soul with some hipper phrasings, in a way that's made Gaines a favorite for hard soul single collectors over the years. Titles include a range of singles plus some previously unissued numbers – and tracks include "A Certain Girl", "Been So Long", "Taking All The Love I Can", "Keep Your Mind On Me", "Nine Pound Steel", "Hymn No. 5", and "Yearning & Burning". ✨✧ Julia LeeTonight's The Night ... LP
Capitol/Charly (UK), Late 40s/Early 50s. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
Charly collection of Julie Lee's hard early R&B sides for Capitol, with material that ranges from 1944 to 1952. Some of the tracks have Jay McShann backing Julia up, and others have Julia's group The Boy Friends, but most of the cuts just have some nice small combo groups put together by Capitol, with Julia on piano and vocals. Tracks include "Last Call For Alcohol", "Snatch & Grab It", "King Size Papa", "Can't Get Enough Of That Stuff", "Gotta Gimme Whatcha Got", and "I Didn't Like It The First Time". Great notes, and 16 cuts in all. LP, Vinyl record album

Carmen McRaeCarmen McRae (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Bethlehem/Charly (Germany), 1954. Used ... $2.99
Great early work from Carmen McRae – small combo, jazzy, and a nicely different set than some of her other work of the 50s! Backings are by two groups – one headed by accordionist Mat Mathews, the other by saxophonist Tony Scott – both quartets, and both of them working with a nicely lean sense of swing that seems to bring the same out of Carmen! The album's not as dark or moody as you might expect from these years – and that's a great thing to us, because it illuminates another side of Carmen's talents that don't always get as much exposure. Titles include "Easy To Love", "If I'm Lucky", "Tip Toe Gently", "Old Devil Moon", "Misery", and "Too Much In Love To Care" CD

Charly (UK), Early 60s/Late 70s. New Copy ... $19.99 28.99
Two slices of genius from the great Aaron Neville – both before he rose to greater fame working on the west coast! The set features some early tracks from Aaron's years on Minit Records – early New Orleans soul with a nicely rollicking vibe, but also with a few tracks that mark him as one of the more sensitive singers on the Crescent City scene. The Sansu sides are from later, and often have strong help in the studio from Allen Toussaint – who really keeps a nice groove under many numbers. Titles include the sublime funk track "Hercules" – plus "For Every Boy There's A Girl", "Wrong Number", "Let's Live", "Get Out Of My Life", "I'm Waiting At The Station", "Humdinger", "Speak To Me", "You Can Give But You Can't Take", "She's On My Mind", "All These Things", and "Over You". A beautifully diverse collection of early work from New Orleans soul legend Allen Toussaint – a set that not only includes many of his key recordings from the scene in the 60s, but also some of his important productions for other artists too! The package begins with Toussaint in the lead on a series tracks – working either as himself, or as Al Touson, or with The Stones, The Rubyiats, or Allen & Allen – all with these choppy, loping, heavy-grooving rhythms that were Toussaint's huge contribution to New Orleans soul right from the start! Titles include "Whipped Cream", "Wham Tousan", "Omar Khayyam", "Beverley Baby", and "Java". The second half features a series of recordings done for the Minit, Instant, and Sansu labels – all with Toussaint involved either as producer, arranger, or musician – on material that forever shaped the sound of New Orleans! Hey, they're not kidding with this title – as Tito really goes to town with a set of mambo tunes, grooving it up with a hard heavy percussive edge! The title's one of the first on the Tico label (as an LP), and it really sets the pace for some of the label's excellent work to come – as Tito and crew play with a tightness and energy that's missing from a lot of their earlier work. If you like Latin vibes, you'll find plenty of them on this set – and tracks include "Mambo Inn", "Mambo Tipico", "Mambo Rumbon", "Mambo Lenko", "Mambolino", "Ran Kan Kan", and "Titoro". CD

Lots of wah-wah guitar, funky keys, and tight riffing by the band – especially on the cuts "Harlem Clavinette", "Hang On in There", and "Harlem Love Theme". BYG/Charly (UK), 1969. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Seminal work from the Art Ensemble of Chicago – recorded during their most creative period ever! The album was recorded live in October of 1969 – at a time when the group had pulled up roots and moved to France for a few years, bursting on the European scene with unique creativity that was not getting the recognition it deserved in their hometown of Chicago. The studio sets from this time are already the stuff of legend, and have thankfully made it back on reissue heavily the past few years – and this brilliant live set stands perfectly next to them – matching any of the LPs in the Great Black Music series on BYG/Actuel for sheer creative brilliance and soulful energy! Fontella Bass joins the group for a bit of vocals, and the 2CD set features 2 long tracks – "Bon Voyage" and "Oh Strange". CD

✨✧ Don CherryMu (The Complete Session) ... CD
Charly (UK), 1970/1996. Used ... Out Of Stock
Don Cherry really breaks out here on his classic Mu sessions from France – using the new freedoms of post-68 Paris to explore themes at a level that would set the tone for generations to come! The album's very spare, and very improvised – with Cherry on pocket trumpet, piano, and wooden flute – plus a bit of percussion too – alongside drummer Ed Blackwell, who's equally unbridled – showing a huge evolution since the time both he and Don spent in the group of Ornette Coleman! There's a few echoes of the global elements that Cherry would later embrace more strongly in the 70s – but the core energy here is mostly improvised jazz, handled at a level that really makes a lot better use of the freedom than some of Don's contemporaries. Titles include "Total Vibration", "Sun Of The East", "Brilliant Action", "Terrestrial Beings", "Bamboo Night", "The Mysticism Of My Sound", "Psycho Drama", "Smiling Faces Going Places", "Teo Teo Can", and "Dollar Brand/Spontaneous Composing/Exert Man On The Moon". A classic set of early jazz recordings by Nina Simone – one of her first albums ever, but already with an approach that's quite different from other singers of the time! Nina's singing a fair bit of standards here, but she brings a deeply personal approach to the material – inflecting the tunes with gospel-inspired soul, and showing some very slight folksy touches – of the sort that would come in more heavily on later records. Backing is by a small combo, and tracks include "Plain Gold Ring", "Good Bait", "He Needs Me", "Don't Smoke In Bed", and "I Loves You Porgy". Plus, this whole thing's very nicely packaged – in a gatefold cover, and with 4 bonus tracks, including the excellent groover "African Mailman"! CD

One of the best Brit psychedelic rock albums of the late 60s – one that sounds incredible to this day! On Ogden's Nut Gone Flake the group really found a way to spin a heady, organ rich, drum heavy, and all around big sound into the structure of the 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 minute pop structure – with out sacrificing a bit of the bombast, or burying a genuine groove in superfluous noise cycles. Truly wonderful stuff – will listen to this more often than Sgt. Peppers in our lifetime! Africa Seven (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $19.99
We've had some great trips on Africa Airways in recent years – and this sweet fourth set proves once again that the fun lies in the journey, not the destination! As before, the cuts here share a lot more with American funk than you might think – especially the tight late 70s style with lots of basslines at the bottom, and some warmly jazzy currents in the instrumentation – which often serve to provide a superb setting for the vocals over the top – sometimes just sing-song chorus bits, but merged perfectly with the grooves! Tracks here come from French labels like Fiesta and Sonodisc, and there's definitely some of that criss-crossing between West African and Parisian modes going on – on titles that include "Sun Explosion" by Manu Dibango, "Nassa Nassa" by Uta Bella, "Nimele Bolo" by Charly Kingson, "Africain" by Momo Joseph, "Biram" by Kemayo & K-System, "Soul Magabe" by Pierre Didy Tchakounte, "Funny Saga" by The Monsters, and "Tinini Yanana" by Jake Sollo. ✨✧ Baden PowellPoema On Guitar ... LP
MPS (Germany), 1967. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of Baden Powell's first great bossa sessions in Europe – recorded in a light and lively MPS mode that's a bit different than some of his work at the time in Brazil! Rhythm is by the team of Eberhard Weber on bass and Charly Antolini on drums – both players with non-bossa roots, but who push Powell's groove into some slightly new directions – almost hailing the Brazilian influence that would show up even more strongly in European jazz in years to come! Sidney Smith also adds a bit of flute into some of the tracks on the album – underscoring the moodier moments with a subtle tone next to Powell's more pronounced guitar – and the whole thing's got a sense of poise, grace, and beauty that's simply tremendous! Titles include "Euridice", "Consolacao", "Feitinha Pro Poeta", "Dindi", "Reza", "Samba Triste", and "All The Things You Are". LP, Vinyl record album
