✨✧ Charly AntoliniSpecial Delivery ... LP
MPS (Germany), 1980. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
A later record by drummer Charly Antolini, and still a very tasty bit of MPS jazz – with a mix of styles that recalls his classic albums for the label, and a list of players that includes Dieter Reith on keyboards, Heinz Von Hermann on saxes, and Lee Harper on trumpet! There's a great Latin-y groover called "Senor Hoche", a nice fusion cut called "Like A Swimming Pool", and the drums-only "Drums A Capella". LP, Vinyl record album

A great collection of deep soul work by singer Doris Duke – one of the lesser-remembered talents from her day, but an emotive diva who could sing with the best from Memphis or Muscle Shoals. The set features 12 tracks produced by Jerry "Swamp Dogg" Willams, many in a classic Ann Sexton mode – and titles include "I Don't Care Anymore", "He's Gone", "To The Other Woman (I'm The Other Woman)", "Divorce Decree", "We're More Than Strangers", and "The Feeling Is Right". ✨✧ Art Ensemble Of ChicagoLive In Paris (UK pressing) ... CD
BYG/Charly (UK), 1969. Used 2 CDs ... Just Sold Out!
Seminal work from the Art Ensemble of Chicago – recorded during their most creative period ever! The album was recorded live in October of 1969 – at a time when the group had pulled up roots and moved to France for a few years, bursting on the European scene with unique creativity that was not getting the recognition it deserved in their hometown of Chicago. The studio sets from this time are already the stuff of legend, and have thankfully made it back on reissue heavily the past few years – and this brilliant live set stands perfectly next to them – matching any of the LPs in the Great Black Music series on BYG/Actuel for sheer creative brilliance and soulful energy! Fontella Bass joins the group for a bit of vocals, and the 2CD set features 2 long tracks – "Bon Voyage" and "Oh Strange". CD

Johnny CashOriginal Sun Albums 1957 to 1964 (8CD set) ... CD
Sun/Charly (UK), Late 50s. New Copy 8CD ... $59.99
A massive collection of early work from Johnny Cash – a set that features the bulk of his early work for Sun Records, plus rare material too – all in a book-style format with a nice set of notes and rare images! The music alone is great – as Johnny works here with his initial Tennesse Three combo – very spare, moody, and rhythmic – a superb foil to Johnny's vocals, and his really fantastic sense of a lyric – already fantastic here, right at the start! And Sun Records owner Sam Phillips knew he had a good thing when he had it – because he recorded so much material on Johnny, he was able to keep issuing albums after Cash had moved to Columbia Records – as you'll see here in the package, which references Sun albums up to the 60s. 107 tracks in all – and full artwork reproductions of every record! A hot little collection of Lee's best New Orleans soul from the late 60s – chunky groovers that really have a lot of punch in the beat, most of which were originally produced by Allen Toussaint! The tracks are nearly all perfect – with a dark, descending groove that sounds unlike anything else ever recorded – and which still stand as some of the best that New Orleans had to offer! Titles include "Ride Your Pony", "Working In The Coal Mine", "Holy Cow", "Do Re Mi", "A Lover Was Born", "Give It Up", "Get Out Of My Life Woman", "Ya Ya", "Go Go Girl", and "Everything I Do Gonh Be Funky". A very cool little record – a limited 12" single that features the sublime moog groover "Popcorn" – a tune that was cut famously by Hot Butter in the early 70s, but which is served up here in the original version by its creator, moog maestro Gershon Kingsley – a version that's even cooler and spacier than the hit! The cut is followed by "The First Step" – a moon-themed number that mixes moogy keyboard lines with almost a John Barry/James Bond sort of theme! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Sansu/Charly (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $14.99 17.98
Think you know Huey Piano Smith? Think again – as this massively overstuffed set shows that there's plenty more to discover! Instead of Huey's over-reissued New Orleans tracks from the early years, this package brings together late 60s soul and raw 70s funk – a lesser-known side of Smith's career, and proof that he had plenty of greatness to offer well into the 70s! There's still plenty of heavy Crescent City soul at the bottom of the grooves – but Huey also really takes off in a fast flurry of new styles too – some modes that get increasingly hip on the second half of the collection, as the tunes take on plenty of wonderful 70s funk elements. As with other Charly collections, there's a huge amount of material here – a whopping 45 tracks, packaged in a book-styled cover with a very vivid booklet – and titles that include "Ballad Of A Black Man", "The Whatcha Call Em (ext version)", "Don't You Just Know It", "Funky Funky Football", "High Blood Pressure", "Coo Coo Over You", "You Ain't No Hippie", "Smile For Me", "Twowaypockaway (parts 1 & 2)", "Eight Bars Of Amen", "Epitaph Of Uncle Tom", "Bury Me Dead", "Baby You Hurt Me", "Young Blood", and "We Like Mambo". VariousClub Soul Vol 2 – The Twisted Wheel – Brazennose & Whitworth Street Manchester 1963 to 1971 ... CD
Charly (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $8.99 11.98
The story of one of the most legendary soul clubs in the UK – home to the great wave of Northern Soul enthusiasm that burst big in the 60s – plus a fair bit of hanky panky as well! This collection shows a decidedly raw side of the club's roots – American soul from the 60s, plus a fair bit of R&B as well – a groove that's rougher than you might find on other Northern Soul collections – which often tend towards some of the tighter Detroit productions of the period. The CD features a whopping 28 tracks in all – with lots of tracks from Chicago and the Motor City – and titles include "Road Runner" by Bo Diddley, "Good Times" by Gene Chandler, "Turn On Your Lovelight" by Bobby Blue Bland, "Do The 45" by The Sharpees, "Get Down With It" by Bobby Marchan, "I Spy For The FBI" by Jamo Thomas, "And Get Away" by The Esquires, "I Can't See Your Love" by The Ballads, "Searchin" by Alvin Robinson, and "You Shot Me Through The Grease" by Alvin Cash. Warner/Charly (UK), 1980. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A surprisingly wonderful record! Back in the day, we remember that we didn't like these later P-Funk albums because they weren't as druggy, trippy, or guitar heavy as the early stuff. Now, though, they sound pretty darn sweet to our ears – especially this one, which has lots of cool pre-electro grooves with sweet keyboards, vocoder vocals, and spacey basslines that blow out in deep rich waves of funky soul. The whole thing's an amazing evolution of the George Clinton groove – and titles include "Electric Spanking Of War Babies", "Funk Gets Stronger", "Shockwaves", "Icka-prick", "Brettino's Bounce", and a bonus instrumental version of "Electric Spanking Of War Babies". Nice Pedro Bell cover, too! CD

Nice stuff from one of our favorite R&B bandleaders of the 50s! These excellent tracks pop along with a tight rolling groove and a lively sense of rhythm that was often unmatched by some of the other sleepier groups of the time – and Bradshaw did a good job of recruiting some of the better saxophone talents of the time, which means that some of these numbers are filled with wails, screams, and pops that are right out of an Albert Ayler session! 16 numbers in all, including "Mailman's Sack", "Well Oh Well", "Train Kept A-Rollin", "Breakin Up The House", "Walk That Mess", "Bradshaw Boogie", "Snaggletooth Ruth", "Rippin & Runnin", "Two Dry Bones On The Pantry Shelf" and "One, Two, Three Kick Blues". Charly (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Sublime 60s soul singles – upbeat, grooving, and brought together in support of legendary UK club The Catacombs – an early hotbed for the Northern Soul scene! The package is heavy on notes and images from the club – but even if you've never set foot in the UK, or on a dancefloor, you'll still find plenty here to love – a searing batch of 28 gems from the late 60s – most of them pretty darn rare, and usually with an edge that's a lot rawer than mainstream work of the time! The Catacombs seemed to pick the cuts that still held onto some of the sharper qualities of the earliest years of soul – less smooth groovers and more gritty tracks that really make this batch stand out. Titles include "Try A Little Harder" by The Fi-Dels, "What Is This" by Bobby Womack, "Suffering City" by Johnny & Lilly, "Psychedelic Soul" by Saxie Russell, "Do Me Like You Do Me" by John Williams & The Tick Tocks, "The Wrong Girl" by The Showmen, "Every Beat Of My Heart" by The Du-Ettes, "Michael" by The CODs, "Chinatown" by Victor Knight, "House Of Heartaches" by The Neptunes, "Love Time" by Kelly Brothers, "I've Got To Have Your Love" by Mill Evans, "The Touch Of Venus" by Sandy Wynns, "If You Ask Me" by Jerry Williams, and "Nothing Worse Than Being Alone" by The Ad Libs. The full scope of genius from the legendary Alvin Cash – not just his 60s gritty groovers, but a host of later funk tracks as well – all packaged into a beautiful book-styled package! Cash is one of our favorite Chicago artists ever – a dancer by trade, but a flamboyant personality who always managed to make his way center stage – whether live or in the recording studio! The set begins with early "twine" numbers from Alvin – some romping heavy soul tracks that have a very deep bottom, and a raw sound that's equal part R&B and Chicago soul – definitely tuned towards the dancefloor crowd that was a natural fit for Cash's energy. As the set moves on, it then picks up some wicked late 60s singles for the Toddlin Town label, and also includes some excellent early 70s groovers for Sound Stage Seven – some of Alvin's hardest, heaviest numbers ever. The set features work by Alvin Cash with The Registers, Hundred Dollar Bills, The Crawlers, and Scott Brothers Orchestra – and titles include "Keep On Dancing (parts 1 & 2)", "Funky 69", "Moanin & Groanin", "Doin The Creep", "It's Party Time", "Funky Washing Machine", "Alvin's Doin His Thing", "Funky Street", "Doin The Ali Shuffle", "Whip It On Me", "The Charge", "Boston Monkey", "The Philly Freeze", "Alvin's Boogaloo", "Let's Do Some Good Timing", "The Bump", "Twine Time", "Twine Awhile", "The Barracuda", and "You Shot Me Through The Grease". Great early work from Gene Simmons – a Memphis singer best known for a later Halloween novelty record, but an artist here who's at the prime of his youthful powers – and very much an important part of the early sound of Sun Records! Gene was maybe getting more of his songs recorded by other artists at the time, but he's also a hell of a singer too – with a great mix of blues and hillbilly roots, fused into a spare style that really brings out the moodier elements in his music, and which is light years from more mainstream rock and pop – those farther reaches that always yield plenty, if you know where to dig into the Sun Records catalog! The set features 27 tracks from these early years, including some alternates too – and titles include "Drinkin Wine", "Juicy Fruit", "Mom & Pop", "Money Money Money", "I Done Told You", "Crazy Woman", "If I'm Not Wanted", "Drinkin Scotch", "Down On The Border", "Gene's Jumpin Jive", "You Can't Break The Chains Of Love", and "Peroxide Blonde & A Hopped Up Model Ford". The package begins with Toussaint in the lead on a series of sides on CD one – working either as himself, or as Al Touson, or with The Stones, The Rubyiats, or Allen & Allen – all with these choppy, loping, heavy-grooving rhythms that were Toussaint's huge contribution to New Orleans soul right from the start! Charly (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A searing set of vintage soul cuts – brought together in honor of the legendary Wigan Casino – one of the most important clubs in the UK Northern Soul scene of the 70s! For the uninitiated, Wigan was a hotbed of upbeat rare soul cuts – overlooked American goodies from both the previous decade and more recent years – often with a strong focus on deeper soul vocals, which meant some strong entries from the southern scene as well! This well-done package comes with a heavy book-style cover, notes on the club and its music – and a whopping 28 tracks in all – including "I Can't Hide It" by The Appreciations, "Baby What Has Happened To Our Love" by The Ringleaders, "The Night The Angels Cried" by Johnny Dynamite, "I'm A Teardrop" by The Jerms, "Your Love Makes Me Lonely" by The Chandlers, "Watch Yourself" by Tony Hester, "Does Anybody Know What Time It Is" by Copper & Brass, "Can I Be Dreamin" by The Young Savages, "She's Fire" by The CODs, "Could It Be" by Mikki Farrow, and "Your Wish Is My Command" by The Inspirations.
