James BrownChristmas Album (aka It's A Funky Christmas) ... CD
Charly (UK), Mid 90s. New Copy ... $5.99 18.99
Obscure Holiday work from James Brown – not the oft-compiled tracks from his late 60s years at King Records, but some later numbers that show that Brown could still turn out one heck of a Christmas tune! James' vocals are at their older best – still surprisingly powerful, and able to serve up a seasonal message with a lot more soul than just about anyone else we can think of – and even when the backings are a bit contemporary, the tunes take on a more classic soul feel once the Godfather comes into the mix! Titles include "God Gave Me This", "Reindeer On The Rooftop", "Funky Christmas", "Clean For Christmas", "Mom & Dad", "Not Just Another Holiday", and "Christmas Is For Everyone". CD

Sonny BurgessRed Headed Woman/We Wanna Boogie ... 7-inch
Sun/Charly (UK), 1956. New Copy (reissue)... $5.99
A raw early classic from Sun Records – a tune that's a fantastic illustration of the way the label could really capture the fire of an artist like Sonny Burgess! Instrumentation is spare, but right on the money – riffing guitar and echoey vocals from Burgess – with a piano solo at one point, and a great guitar bit too – all set to rhythms that never stop! The flipside follows nice – and the echo in the production really makes the whole thing sound wonderful! 7-inch, Vinyl record

John ColtraneComplete Graz Concert ... CD
Charly (UK), 1962. Used 2 CDs ... $4.99
Fantastic material from an important early tour of Europe by the John Coltrane Quartet – tracks recorded in Graz, Austria – and a perfect example of the group as they were really beginning to stretch out and explore! At some level, the vibe here is like the famous first run of Village Vanguard sessions by Coltrane – but the sound shows just how much the players had opened up since the previous year – really tremendous work from the leader on both soprano sax and tenor, McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums! CD
(Disc 2 only – with long takes of "Impressions" and "My Favourite Things", plus "I Want To Talk About You". DISC 2 ONLY!!!)

GongCamembert Electrique ... CD
Charly/Snapper (UK), 1971. Used ... $14.99
The first album from Gong – and a weird little masterpiece that's left an undeniable imprint over the years! There's a definite proggish feel to the set, and some jazz rock elements too – but the overall approach is considerably madder than most at the time – hardly headed for the charts, and with more than enough space for weird little twists and turns that really keep things interesting! Production has a nicely rough quality that makes the record quite different from the group's later work – and the lyrics have a nicely looney feel that's a bit like work by Syd Barrett or Kevin Ayers. Titles include "Radio Gnome", "You Can't Kill Me", "Tried So Hard", "Tropical Fish Selene", "Squeezing Sponges Over Policemen's Heads", and "Wet Cheese Delirium". CD

Archie SheppBlase ... CD
BYG/Charly (UK), 1970. Used ... $9.99
A crucial album from Archie Shepp – one that finds him enjoying new freedoms on the French scene at the end of the 60s – which then helps him take off from his earlier Impulse Records modes, at a level he'd then bring back to the label in the early 70s! There's a very free-thinking sense of combination here – as Shepp is breaking down from his idea of a more unified sound in the material – and opens the door at points to work from Jeanne Lee on voice and Chicago Beau and Julio Finn on harmonicas – in a lineup that also includes Malachi Favors on bass, Dave Burrell on piano, and Philly Joe Jones on drums. These are long, spiritual tracks that comprise some of his best European recordings of the time, and the titles include "There is a Balm in Gilead", "Touareg", "Blase", and "My Angel" – plus a strong reading of "Sophisticated Lady" – which maybe points the way towards some of the Shepp experiments in the late 70s. SpanielsVery Best Of The Spaniels ... CD
Vee Jay/Charly (UK), 1950s. New Copy ... $4.99 12.99
Massive music from The Spaniels – one of the hippest vocal groups of the 50s, and one of the greatest acts to ever record for Vee Jay Records! The collection shows both sides of the group's mighty talents – their wonderful way with a sophisticated ballad, a style that often made them sound a lot more modern than their contemporaries – and their harder-hitting way of serving up a groover, a rough-edged, R&B-drenched mode that plenty of others tried to copy at the time. There's plenty of greatness packed into one tiny CD here – and the cuts go way beyond the obvious hits, to include some gems by the group that have been best-remembered in later years, once re-dug by collectors. Titles include "False Love", "Lucinda", "Since I Fell For You", "Bounce", "Goodnight Sweetheart Goodnight", "Play It Cool", "Automobiles", "Trees", "Heart & Soul", "Three Little Words", "I Know", "The Posse", "Everyone's Laughing", "A Lovely Way To Spend An Evening", "A Hundred Years From Today", "I'm Gonna Thank Him", "Great Googley Moo (alt)", "Lovey Dovey Baby", and "Red Sails In The Sunset". VariousCatacombs – Temple Street, Wolverhampton 1968 to 1974 – The Original Sound Of Northern Soul, Popcorn & R&B ... CD
Charly (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $9.99 13.98
Sublime 60s soul singles – upbeat, grooving, and brought together in support of legendary UK club The Catacombs – an early hotbed for the Northern Soul scene! The package is heavy on notes and images from the club – but even if you've never set foot in the UK, or on a dancefloor, you'll still find plenty here to love – a searing batch of 28 gems from the late 60s – most of them pretty darn rare, and usually with an edge that's a lot rawer than mainstream work of the time! The Catacombs seemed to pick the cuts that still held onto some of the sharper qualities of the earliest years of soul – less smooth groovers and more gritty tracks that really make this batch stand out. Titles include "Try A Little Harder" by The Fi-Dels, "What Is This" by Bobby Womack, "Suffering City" by Johnny & Lilly, "Psychedelic Soul" by Saxie Russell, "Do Me Like You Do Me" by John Williams & The Tick Tocks, "The Wrong Girl" by The Showmen, "Every Beat Of My Heart" by The Du-Ettes, "Michael" by The CODs, "Chinatown" by Victor Knight, "House Of Heartaches" by The Neptunes, "Love Time" by Kelly Brothers, "I've Got To Have Your Love" by Mill Evans, "The Touch Of Venus" by Sandy Wynns, "If You Ask Me" by Jerry Williams, and "Nothing Worse Than Being Alone" by The Ad Libs. Charly (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $18.99 24.99
A great package of classic underground soul – wrapped around the story of one of the most legendary soul clubs in the UK – home to the great wave of Northern Soul enthusiasm that burst big in the 60s – plus a fair bit of hanky panky as well! This collection shows a decidedly raw side of the club's roots – American soul from the 60s, plus a fair bit of R&B as well – a groove that's rougher than you might find on other Northern Soul collections – which often tend towards some of the tighter Detroit productions of the period. The LP features 14 great tracks from back in the day – underground soul that's great, even if you don't care about the history of the legendary venue – titles that include "Cry To Me" by Solomon Burke, "Searchin" by Alvin Robinson, "Fortune Teller" by Benny Spellman, "At The Party" by Big Sambo, "Do The 45" by The Sharpees, "Talk To Me Baby" by Joe Haywood, "Long Time No See" by Ronnie & The Manhattans, "Twine Time" by Alvin Cash, "Omar Khayyam" by The Rubaiyats, and "A Certain Girl" by Bo Diddley. The second album from Instant Funk – and a really fully developed batch of tunes that has them stepping out from their role as a Philly backup group! The album bounces along in a well-produced groove – thanks to Bunny Sigler – stepping with the best funky Salsoul work of the time in a round blend of bass, heavy percussion, and some ultra-catchy riffs that snap and crackle with a few nice disco breaks! Titles include "It's Cool", "Funk N Roll", "What Can I Do For You", "Can You See Where I'm Coming From", and "You Want My Love". CD

The package features 12 tracks in all – and it's a well-selected batch that picks out only the best tracks from the time – with titles that include "Dr Gasca", "O Mi Shango", "Iberia", "Lady Marmalade", "Naked", "Funk Up", "Song For You", "Funk Down", and "Leah". ✨✧ VariousRed Bird Story (2CD set) ... CD
Red Bird/Charly (UK), Mid 60s. Used 2CD set ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Red Bird was a groovy little label set up in the mid 60s by Lieber & Stoller after years of success churning out pop hits for Atlantic. And while the label was fairly short-lived, they did have a number of big records – like "Chapel Of Love" by The Dixie Cups, "Leader Of The Pack" by The Shangri-Las, and "The Boy From New York City" by The Ad-Libs – all of which are on this set. The best stuff, though, is some of the labels' groovy harmony tracks, which show up here as a mix of surf-sounding tunes and group soul material – titles like "Girl From Greenwich Village" by The Tradewinds, "I Got A Dream" by The Soul Brothers, "Baby Be Mine " by The Jelly Beans and more. There's also some nice titles by single artists – including early work by Linda Jones, Sam Hawkins, Didi Noel, and Alvin Robinson. 60 cuts in all, on 2 CDs, with a great booklet! CD

One Der Ful/Charly (UK), 1960s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Seminal soul from one of Chicago's greatest labels in the 60s – the One-Der-Ful/Mar-V-Lus imprints, plus tracks from related Toddlin Town too – home to some of the best indie work at the time! The quality here is right up there with the best you'd hear from Chess, Okeh, or Brunswick in the 60s – no surprise, since the pair of labels shared lots of similar talents with the bigger companies – as well as session men, songwriters, and producers too! The full scope of Chicago soul is really covered here – upbeat groovers for the dancefloor, heartfelt ballads with great harmonies, and some of the harder-edged bluesy numbers that really helped put One-Der-Ful on the map! There's also some key early examples of funk – proof that in the 60s, Chicago was one of the hippest scenes in the world – and the set comes with 2 CDs, nestled in a hardback booklet of notes and photos – with a whopping 50 tracks in all. Sun, 1962. Near Mint- ... $19.99
An obscure soul set on the legendary Sun Records label – raw vocals from Frank Ballard, done in a style that still has a few older R&B currents in the mix, but which is definitely pointed strongly towards a 60s groove! Backings are by the band of tenorist Phillip Reynolds, and the sound here is a lot more in the King Records mode than you'd expect from Sun – plenty of grit in the grooves, and with some great work on piano, guitar, and tenor next to the vocals! Frank earlier sung with tenor man Curtis Amy, but he's really at the top of his game here – and titles include "Trouble Down The Road", "Rollin In", "After Hours", "Do Wa Diddi", "Is Anybody There", and "Just Leave It With Me Baby". ✨✧ Michael DeaseNext Best Thing ... CD
Posi tone, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
We love the work of trombonist Michael Dease, and a record like this really has him in the best possible setting to really do his thing – working with a combo of well-chosen, sympathetic players, getting to unfurl some great new compositions, and stepping forward with this rock-solid energy that easily makes him one of the greatest contemporary musicians on his instrument! Dease isn't one to take the trombone into free jazz territory – but he does evolve the instrument a few steps past the territory of predecessors like JJ Johnson, Curtis Fuller, and even Steve Turre – working with a voice that's all his own, and a tight sense of phrasing that resonates especially well here with work on trumpet from Alex Sipiagin. But, as mentioned, the whole group's great – a wonderfully warm lineup with Renee Rosnes on piano, Rudresh Mahanthappa on alto, Boris Kozlov on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums – the last two of whom are wonderfully hard-swinging, and are fast becoming one of our favorite contemporary rhythm teams. Titles include the Dease originals "Horse Trading", "Lullaby For Rita", "Charly Jaye", and "Parker's Brood" – plus the tracks "Tiktaalk", "Glory", "Rainbow People", and "With Love". CD
